On behalf of the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, I am thrilled to present the 2022 Annual Report.

This year’s report offers a view into initiatives and accomplishments that support our academic health system’s tripartite mission of patient care, research, and education. This aligns with the University of Iowa Health Care strategic plan and its overall mission of Changing Medicine. Changing Lives®

• Patient care: providing high-quality primary and specialty care services through world-class health care with a devotion to innovative care, excellent service, and exceptional outcomes

• Research: bringing new discoveries and treatments into human health for injuries and diseases

• Education: teaching and training tomorrow’s health care providers through innovation, integration, and individualization

A critical component of each facet of the tripartite mission is interprofessional collaboration not only across the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care but throughout the UI Health Care enterprise. One way this has been accomplished was through collaborations with over 40 schools to educate and train more than 1,500 students within the areas of care coordination, nursing, rehabilitation therapies, and respiratory care in Fiscal Year 22, which will directly affect the future health care workforce.

Discovery through innovation and research continues to be a mainstay in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care with 13 current research studies, 21 innovation ideas in development, and five innovation prototypes. The impact in evidence application, the primary tenet of the world-renowned evidence-based practice (EBP) program, has grown exponentially with the release of the second edition of the award-winning EvidenceBased Practice in Action: Comprehensive Strategies, Tools, and Tips From University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The second edition of the book builds on the Iowa Model and Iowa Implementation for Sustainability Framework, which have been downloaded and requested for use thousands of times by individuals throughout the United States and across the globe.

Innovation, excellent service, and intentional focus on ensuring exceptional outcomes are woven into patient care initiatives every single day that impact inpatients, ambulatory patients, and the broader Iowa City community and state of Iowa. In Fiscal Year 22, more than 4,800 adult, pediatric, and neonatal ventilator initiations were performed by respiratory care; greater than 33,000 time-outs were completed by surgical teams; in excess of 200,000 physical therapy and 75,000 occupational therapy service units of 15 minutes of face-toface time with patients were carried out by rehabilitation therapies; and over 40,000 COVID-19 vaccinations and flu vaccinations were administered to patients.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share a sneak peek into a few initiatives and accomplishments from this past year that showcase the successful accomplishments of both individuals and interprofessional teams throughout the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care that reflect UI Health Care’s tripartite mission. I hope you enjoy the featured content in the 2022 Annual Report.

Sincerely,

Kimberly D. Hunter, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC Chief Nurse Executive and Interim Chief Executive Officer, UI Hospitals & Clinics Interim Associate Vice President, UI Health Care
