Unique in contemporary British art, Paul Yates, has sustained a highly original creative output across poetry, painting and film for over four decades. His poetry has been published in several languages, his films have won international awards and his paintings feature in important private, public and royal collections. Recently one of his works was acquired for the legendary La Colombe d’Or collection in the south of France, a singular honour for a British artist.
Girl in a Dream
Paintings may remain in Yates’s Studio for years before just the right brush stroke or markmaking ‘brings them into land,’ as he is wont to say. Across his career he has released less than one hundred canvases, making them even more prized. Yates maintains a very private personal profile, declining interviews and rarely attending exhibitions, preferring that his works speak for themselves.

Christmas Exhibition of New Prints For over twenty years, no matter where in the world Yates’s works have been exhibited, they have been framed by Heather Lavery of Sheldon Fine Art. A selection of new prints and original studio studies may be viewed at Sheldon Fine Art, Frances Street, Newtownards from the 25th November until Christmas.

DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry
I must admit I wasn’t that surprised when I heard the news that local magician and TikTok sensation (he has over 16 million followers, apparently) Joel Mawhinney has been chosen to be the next Blue Peter presenter. He hails from Bangor and is the 41st host of the legendary children’s show. He attended our Influential Women of the Year lunch in May and the Ulster Tatler Awards in September, at which he picked up the Celebrity of the Year Award. Anyway, it struck me when I met him, and saw him perform on stage, that he certainly has star quality. Although he is a mere 25 years old, he oozes charisma and self-assurance. In fact, myself and my colleagues afterwards commented that we wouldn’t be surprised if he were to go far. It will be interesting to watch his career trajectory over the next few years. I wish him well. Jane Hardy has interviewed him for this issue so if you want to read some more about him turn to page 66.

LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
MASTERING MINIMALISM This month, Kathy discusses perfecting her capsule wardrobe to create a more minimalist lifestyle. December is the month when we might expect to spend more money than we’d like to and acquire more things than we need or want. The staggering cost of eating, heating and everything else might put paid to lavish exchanges of presents this year and I for one won’t be sorry. I do not need any more stuff. I am the genetic opposite of a hoarder. I am by nature a sorter, a filer, a declutterer. I don’t actually know if there is a hoarding gene but if there is, my partner Jim definitely has it. Every available surface in his house is littered with used train tickets, bits of wire (they might come in handy for something, apparently) and ancient birthday cards. The moment I enter I want to grab a black bin bag and scoop it all in. Give me a recycling centre over a shopping centre any day. I wouldn’t define myself as a full-blown minimalist - the kind that has 10 black t-shirts, a plant and one chair - but in recent years I have found that the basic tenets of minimalism make a lot of sense. Minimalists define themselves in all sorts of ways, but the core idea is that things do not make us happy; we simply don’t need All The Stuff. Until recently, it was easy, I didn’t have any room for it. I lived for a dozen years in London and couldn’t afford to buy a place so I was a serial renter of small flats, never acquiring much more than books, CDs, DVDs, the odd picture and clothes. I didn’t have as many clothes as others I knew. I was never one for ‘fast fashion’, the wearing of an exploitatively cheap outfit once before grimly disposing of and replacing it; however, I wanted to streamline what I had. A quick search led me to the hordes of minimalist bloggers, vloggers and podcasters out there gently coaxing us into letting it all go. I started with US duo The Minimalists, who led me to Courtney Carver’s Project 333 in which she lays down the challenge of getting dressed using 33 items or fewer for 3 months. She has some rules: coats, shoes and accessories count; underwear, nightwear and workout gear do not, but you can do it whatever way you like. Once you’ve whittled your wardrobe down to the essentials it’s easier to choose what to wear, you use every single item you own, you become more creative in your styling and, crucially, you stop shopping, thereby saving money, helping the environment and freeing up time for more useful pursuits. The project was a revelation. I couldn’t believe how many items of clothing I never wore: things that didn’t fit me, didn’t suit me, didn’t go with anything else or had been ‘aspirational’ purchases - glittery cocktail dresses bought for Fantasy Me, who attends glamorous soirées, rather than Actual Me, who mostly watches telly in jogging bottoms. Some items, to my shame, still had the label on. There were
pitfalls, of course. It took me a while to realise that I didn’t actually like the “uniform” pushed by many proponents of the capsule wardrobe - blazers, collared shirts and pencil skirts in neutral shades of black, cream and tan. None of these suited my shape or colouring. I soon realised that getting rid of old clothes just to replace them with new ones with a more minimalist ‘aesthetic’ completely misses the point, which is to stop endlessly consuming and love and value what we already own. Moving back to Belfast and into a house gave me more room to fill, and gradually my wardrobe started to swell. So I started the process again. A good cull has yielded several bags of donations to friends and the charity shop - again, mostly bad impulse purchases. I have more than 33 items left but it’s a number I’m happy with and will try to stick to. For an organiser like me, there is so much satisfaction in opening my wardrobe and seeing everything hanging there neatly, knowing that it all fits, is in good repair and will fulfil its destiny - to be worn!
THIS MONTH’S OBSESSIONS: Bad Sisters – Dark Irish comedy series on Apple TV about five sisters waging war on their controlling brother-in-law. Adapted from a Flemish series by the wonderful Sharon Horgan.
Thunder & Lightning: A Memoir of Life on the Tough Cul-de-Sacs of Bangor – Bestselling author Colin Bateman’s recollections of life growing up in 1970s Bangor and working as a journalist on the Bangor Spectator. Insightful and, as you’d expect, very funny.
Stuffed Peppers – De-seed and halve peppers, sprinkle with oil and salt and roast for 15 minutes. Make couscous with stock and stir through fried mushrooms, pesto and chunks of halloumi or feta. Fill peppers and bake for another 15 minutes.

Guests enjoyed a drinks reception in the Dining Hall before being led by the Pipe Major, Drum Major and the Band Master, Grahame Harris, to their tables. An incredible £630 was raised for The Henry James Campbell Bursary, a scheme enabling a young man to join the college who otherwise would be unable to attend the school.

ONE HE PREPARED EARLIER
EDITED BY JANE HARDY
Joel Mawhinney, the 41st Blue Peter presenter, talks to Jane Hardy about the magic that launched his brilliant career and how he won over Henry, the Blue Peter dog.
T
alking from a hotel at Gatwick Airport, Joel Mawhinney (25) reveals he’d already had a trial run at co-presenting the BBC’s most venerable kids’ programme, Blue Peter. Using the programme’s own lingo, you could say this move was one he’d prepared earlier. Mawhinney explains: “I’d done my magic a couple of times on the programme and they said ‘Have you ever thought of doing some presenting?’” Mawhinney didn’t need asking twice, took a screen test, auditioned, then got the thumbs up. “I had this phone call and thought it was a joke.” It wasn’t and Joel Mawhinney took over last month from Adam Beales as the programme’s 41st presenter. So how did it go? Mawhinney says it went well. “It was very surreal but I was itching to perform and I was happy with it.” They did a prerecorded show, then a live Blue Peter at 5pm on the same day. “It was a double record and I’m not sure if I am supposed to tell you this but although 95% of Blue Peter is live, one or two shows are recorded, like the Christmas show.” Of course, it’s the live material one remembers, some of it very unrehearsed. We laugh about the famous episode in the ‘60s when Val, John and Peter entertained an engagingly incontinent baby elephant in the studio. Other than animal magic, Blue Peter has always demonstrated an adventurous streak and encouraged its presenters to lead by example. While John Noakes famously climbed Nelson’s column, Joel Mawhinney was asked to jump off a cliff for his first physical challenge. He recalls the trip to the location in deepest Scotland. “It took several hours to get there and they wanted me to do a cliff jump right into the sea, no line or harness.” It’s called tombstoning because of the straight posture you adopt going down, and the programme makers gave their newest
presenter a get-out clause. “They said, ‘Are you sure?’ Bless, but I wasn’t going to say no to my first time on camera after a four-hour drive even if it was out of my comfort zone.” He did the jump, and the result is classic Blue Peter. The guy from Bangor is a natural and his calling card has been a highly successful career in magic. Mawhinney now has some 20 million social media followers and has to adopt a disguise if he wants some personal space. “Recognition via Blue Peter isn’t an issue as all these people already know me from videos. I have to put on a hat when I go to the gym.” Mawhinney started in magic when he was young, encouraged by his grandfather. He has said he developed tricks at primary school partly as a way of making friends and standing out in class. “I was pretty extrovert so it came naturally.” Nowadays, Mawhinney practises contemporary magic skills, revealing that he does a lot of mentalism like David Meade and Derren Brown. “I used to do hypnosis, not getting people to do silly things, but revealing secrets about them. It wasn’t psychotherapy and it’s not part of my routine so much now.” Mawhinney is very pleased the Blue Peter people have allowed him to introduce his tricks into the show. The programme has been going for 64 years and has inevitably evolved, although the key elements of entertainment and a certain amount of sticky backed plastic educational content endure. Yet today there is the challenge of competing with Tik Tok and kids’ IT-dominated world. On the question of TV technique, Mawhinney has clear views. “It isn’t acting. Although it’s rather a cliché, I feel you have to be yourself, albeit enhanced. If you don’t, the façade will eventually drop.”

INTERVIEW \ Joel won Celebrity of the Year at the 2022 Ulster Tatler
Awards. Here he is pictured with sponsor of Celebrity of the Year, Audrey Spence from IHS Incorporate Employee Benefit Solutions.
Mawhinney has an interesting background. Brought up by parents who both worked in the youth ministry of the Presbyterian church, Joel has a theory his confidence stems from engaging with grown-ups from an early age. “We had adults around a lot, for dinner and so on. I’d always talk to them.” Music is also part of the Mawhinney brand. He played the trumpet and developed eclectic tastes. “Guns and Roses, which Dad had on in the car, to classical music. I like listening to people like contemporary composer John Hopkins. After doing A levels in music, history and a couple of other subjects, Mawhinney chose not to go to college, but concentrated on his career. “I took a gap year, then another, then another and I’m still on one,” he jokes. Clearly a hard worker, Mawhinney notes that the idea of one day working on Blue Peter crystallised when he met fellow Bangorean Zoe Salmon, who was in the BBC hot seat from 2004-2008. “She came to our school and I was inspired.” Style is always crucial in the youth market. Mawhinney’s trademark cool haircut, a slight homage to Criss Angel, the US magician, is achieved by visits to a Belfast hairdressers; the style is now guided by the programme. “Now I have a wardrobe manager and my style is maybe softer.“ Mawhinney sports an acid pink jacket in one of the promo shots and has a nice line in dark nail varnish. His manager Tristan McGavigan is a fashion influencer and has a completely different style. Mawhinney laughs infectiously. “Oh yes, Tristan wears suits and tweed and different things from me.” In terms of his personal life, Mawhinney is super-busy, commuting to and from Northern Ireland and the BBC. He intends to buy a place in England although still has a Belfast apartment. He was involved with ex-Miss Northern Ireland Eden McAllister but says that he is single “at the moment”, largely because it wouldn’t be fair to get involved while living in two places at once. “It would be very difficult to find time to make that commitment.” We discuss his future presenting roles and challenges. On the Blue Peter website, it lists an ice sculpture run-off between him and fellow presenter Richie. Asked what he might produce, Mawhinney says the idea is news to him. “You’ve come to me with an exclusive! They haven’t told me yet…” Undoubtedly something individual, possibly whacky. It might be an animal as they’ve always featured in the Blue Peter annals. Today Henry the dog is one of Blue Peter’s key figures, following in the pawsteps of Shep, John Noakes’ dog, and other studio legends. So how do they get on? “Very well, as I give him bits of chicken to eat…” And what about relations with his human colleagues, co-presenters Richie Driss and Mwaksy Mudend? Mawhinney laughs. “Again very well, as I give them £10 notes. No, they’re absolute legends and when I started, let me get on with things. I’m so grateful.” So what does the man with what he describes as his “dream job” want for Christmas. “More time to spend with friends” and he is looking forward to coming home and hanging out with mates and family. Whatever, Joel Mawhinney will enjoy it. “I always loved Christmas as a child and never bothered about birthdays, because that’s when I got bought magic kits and books.”

Ashley McDonnell
Global Digital Media & E-Commerce Manager at PUIG
Often described as Ireland’s very own Emily In Paris, New York Born, Galway native Ashley McDonnell, currently Global Digital Media & E-Commerce Manager at PUIG, has become an undisputed force within the luxury and digital space. Her latest venture, podcast Tech Powered Luxury, will explore the unison of luxury and technology, delving deep into the minds of industry leaders, providing a platform to share experiences and insights. How would you describe your style? A New Yorker with a Parisian soul and Irish heart. My style reflects the cities and countries I’ve lived in, and I love wearing Irish brands in particular when abroad, to showcase our talented designers and have something unique within my wardrobe. What are your wardrobe staples that you can’t live without? Handbags. I’m a bag person! My bags are my babies - they have their own wardrobe and every day I wear a different bag, sometimes multiple bags a day. This can become a challenge when looking for a wallet or a lipstick, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. Do you have a favourite designer or high street brand? I will forever be a Dior girl. Dior was my first fashion house to really fall in love with, and after spending the first years of my career working at the headquarters of the brand, it has such a special place in my heart. I really admire what Maria Grazia Chiuri has achieved over the last years in developing collections inspired by femininity and the modern woman, without losing the DNA of the heritage instilled in the maison by Christian Dior. Do you have any style icons? Gemma Chan, best known for playing the role of Astrid in Crazy Rich Asians, is one of the most stylish women I’ve ever come across. I also religiously follow Marta Sierra on Instagram, who I was lucky enough to interview

for episode two of my podcast Tech Powered Luxury. Her style is fun, creative and daring. Lastly, Harry Styles! If I could borrow anything from his wardrobe, I know I’d have a lot of fun in his Gucci suits and sequined onesies. Fashion should be fun and explorative. Do you have a skincare regime? Absolutely, I’m a skincare fanatic. Since discovering Seabody, my routine has been simplified as I’m not constantly on the hunt for something better - it simply doesn’t get better! I use the Aquasurge Day Serum and Overnight Elexir serum as a first step, followed by the Seabody Glycan Enrich Moisturiser. I wear their Luminous Prime SPF30 everyday as well, as a last step before putting on makeup in the morning. I’ve also started taking their Beauty supplement, which is the perfect compliment to skincare, as it takes care of the skin’s health, elasticity and appearance from the inside out, using molecules derived from Irish seaweed. What is your signature scent? During the day I wear Fame by Paco Rabanne, and at night I wear Jean Paul Gaultier So Scandal. I worked on the launch of both of these products and have lovely memories attached to them. The role that scent has in encapsulating memories is fascinating to me, and I have so many fragrances that remind me of different moments in life. Are there any haircare products you recommend? I swear by Fable & Mane products, founded by 70
my close friend Akash Mehta who I used to work with at Dior. Fable & Mane have a beautiful pre-wash scalp oil which smells divine, and their hair mask is the ultimate self care product. Akash is also a guest on Tech Powered Luxury. During his episode he shares the inspiration for the brand, and how they grew to be the number one haircare brand online at Sephora. What is your go-to makeup product? I always wear something on my lips, usually Dior as I think they do the best lipsticks and lip products. The Lip Glow Oil is a personal favourite, or the signature Rouge Dior in shade 999 - their bold and rich red. Ashley’s new podcast Tech Powered Luxury is available on all streaming platforms.

Never Too Late To Learn! I never went to university; it just wasn’t part of my journey and I have to say it’s always niggled me. It was not the physical going to university that bothered me, missing out on student life (I have experienced as many all-nighters and flat mates who won’t do their fair share than I care to remember!). It was the academic learning I missed, as far as I remember I have always wanted to learn. After three years, two lockdowns and at 57 years old I have put that yearning to rest. Last month I graduated with my first Diploma in Professional Digital Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing at Belfast Metropolitan College. There is a saying in my family about us Meenehan’s being late developers. Well, Mum and Dad, you got that right. It’s never too late to learn! H E A LT H M AT T E R S
EDITED BY REBECCA NELSON
Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.
Enjoy the gift of no headaches or migraines at Christmas With the festive season upon us, Rebecca Nelson, Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist and the founder of Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic, shares her top tips on staying headache and migraine free this Christmas.
December is one of our busiest months at Apex Headache Clinic. For many, the festive season is a time of stress, involving last minute shopping, present delivering and plenty of household chores. While most will attribute their headaches or migraines to the stress of the silly season, the source of the problem is often entirely different. It is not well known that the vast majority of headaches and migraines are in fact triggered from the upper neck region of the spine, even when the sufferer, in many cases doesn’t have any neck pain. Apex Headache Clinic can confirm if the source of your headaches and migraines is your neck, after a thorough assessment.
A course of treatment will then follow, involving our unique regime of manual physiotherapy treatment, only offered at Apex Headache Clinic, called the Nelson Headache Approach™. Our approach has an extremely high success rate in clearing or significantly easing patients of their debilitating headaches or migraines. It is our high success rate and medical model of treatment that encourages patients from all over Ireland and the UK to come to us for treatment. Whilst we receive many referrals from consultant neurologists, pediatricians and GPs, patients can refer themselves.
and/or migraines in the majority of cases. The Apex Sleepwell Pillow™ is available to purchase from reception in our Stormont based clinic or from our website – www.apexheadacheclinic. co.uk
Apex Headache Clinic’s survival guide for taking the headache or migraine out of Christmas;
Avoid heavy lifting
Resist the urge to sit in front of the TV all day
Prolonged periods of sitting in the same position often leads to a stiff neck, triggering headaches or migraines in the process. Break up those box set marathons with movement breaks. As little as a brisk walk for 5 to 10 minutes is all that is required to help to keep your neck from stiffening up. Avoid heavy lifting such as carrying heavy shopping bags, which can excessively load the upper neck region and trigger headaches or migraines. Instead, choose a trolley rather than a basket and minimize the lifting of heavy loads.
Choose your pillow carefully
Soft or flat pillows can be a major contributing factor for triggering headaches and migraines as well as triggering neck pain and stiffness. Apex Headache Clinic are fighting the war against poor pillows with our own, custom-made orthopedic pillow collection, which are clinically proven to reduce neck pain, headaches
Wine Consumption
Be careful when it comes to wine consumption, as even in small quantities, wine can trigger headaches or migraines severely. Spirits and cocktails with pure fruit juice are much less of a trigger, and ensure you
apex
balance alcohol drinking with water to keep hydrated.
Frequent Medication
When a headache or migraine strikes, many people reach for painkillers in the hope of a little relief. However, too frequent medication can actually make them worse so limit taking tablets to the worst two or three days of any week and avoid taking codeine. A heat pack can provide short term relief and ice is not recommended.
Tis the season to be headache-free
If you suffer headaches or migraines, help is at hand. There may be a cure waiting for you here. Book an initial assessment and treatment today with one of our Headache Physiotherapy Specialists at Apex Headache Clinic and take the headache out of your Christmas. Gift vouchers are available to purchase, by calling into our Belfast based clinic or by phoning our Reception on 028 9048 4153.

HEALTH MATTERS
“Apex Headache Clinic have cleared my headaches!” 29-year-old software developer Paul McCrory from Belfast, suffered with headaches for 2 years which affected every aspect of his daily life. Desperate to get some relief, Paul visited Apex Headache Clinic. Here, he shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for migraines and headaches, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared his headaches, meaning that he could get back to enjoying life pain free. Paul, when did your headaches begin? My headaches began around 2 years ago. I had started working from home during the pandemic and after about 6 months I began to get vertigo or dizziness like symptoms, pain radiating from my shoulder into my head and pain with a feeling of pressure around my eye. I’m not sure if working from home had been a trigger for this but during this time this was the most sedentary, I had ever been. How did the headaches affect your life? The pain would get really bad and painkillers wouldn’t help. When I had a headache, I wouldn’t be able to do anything and I couldn’t concentrate at work, having to take breaks to
need to take painkillers any longer on a daily basis. I’m really so pleased that my headaches have gone!
I booked an appointment for an initial assessment with one of their specialist headache physiotherapists. Over the course of treatment my pain began to gradually decrease.
rest. I would just have to wait for the pain to pass before I could continue on with my day to day life. What led you to Apex Headache Clinic? At first, I went to see an ENT consultant and had treatment for nasal issues which they thought were causing my symptoms. I had a head and neck CT which ruled out anything more serious causing my pain. I was then referred to a consultant neurologist who suggested I tried Apex Headache Clinic for specialist physiotherapy treatment. I wanted to get some relief from my headaches, so
How has your life changed since having treatment? Before having treatment, I would go about my day worried about a headache being triggered but now I no longer have to worry about this happening. I have been headache free for 4 months now and I would say the pain is completely gone. It’s comforting to know if I have plans that a headache isn’t going to ruin them. I also don’t
apex
What advice would you offer someone with back and leg pain? My advice would be don’t wait until it is affecting every aspect of your day to day life like I did, get on top of it and save yourself the years of pain and worry. Apex Headache Clinic have given me my quality of life back. To book an appointment at Apex Clinic, call 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

COSMETIC SKIN TAG AND MOLE REMOVAL Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr. Chris Hoo specialises in the removal of cosmetic moles and skin tags. In the vast majority of cases all of these lesions are benign. But if there is any clinical concern about the nature of the lesion it can be sent off for testing. Q & A with Chris Hoo
Q: How are skin lesions removed? “In most cases these can be done under a local anaesthetic. If there are no concerns about its nature they can be either shaved off, or excised. Some skin lesions can also be treated by freezing the skin – termed cryotherapy. All options are discussed with the patient beforehand.” Q: Does it hurt having these removed? “Since these are treated under local anaesthetic it shouldn’t! The worse bit is having the injection of anaethetic, which many patients describe as a mild stinging sensation. Cryotherapy does not even need an anesthetic.”
Q: What about aftercare? “If stitches have been necessary these are generally removed after 5 – 7 days. For best results a combination of steristrips and scar massage are required and which you need to do will be discussed.”
Q: How long does the procedure take? “This depends on what’s being done, but most procedures take between 15 and 30 minutes or so.”
Q: Will I have a scar? “Scarring is an inevitable consequence of surgery in anyone’s hands, so yes. But of course the whole point is to be cosmetic and so everything is designed to minimise this. It’s best to consider this as replacing one cosmetic blemish with another one, which should be much better. But it is unrealistic to expect an invisible scar no matter who your specialist is.”
Q: Can I drive home afterwards? “That depends on you! If you are the sort of person who can drive home after a filling at the dentist then there should be no reason why not. But if you are a bit squeamish, it’s best to bring someone with you. They can at least tell you how brave you were, even if they don’t need to drive!”

The
Food of Love
THE RABBIT HOTEL & RETREAT’S CHEF DONNA HUGHES SERVES UP THE MOST POPULAR TRENDS FOR WEDDING FEASTS.
W
edding fever is in the air all year around, but there is something about the festive season, the prospect of Christmas proposals and the motivation of a new year that gets couples thinking about their magical day. Whether you are awaiting a proposal or are planning to exchange vows in 2023, it is important that you put thought into every element of your magical day to make sure that it is unique and individual to you and your partner. There are many aspects of a wedding day that might appear as a given – such as the bride wearing a white dress, or the men of the bridal party giving the speeches – but there are no hard and fast rules that say there is any one way to do a wedding. One thing in particular that is vitally important to your guest’s experience, and the perfect chance to showcase your distinctive style, is the food. Whether you desire the traditional threecourse evening meal, served as you sit at the top table, or you want to treat your guests to a quirky wedding banquet, Donna Hughes, Executive Chef at The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat has shared her insights on the food of love and popular wedding feast trends that will add personality and flare to the most important day of your life. Traditions That are Here to Stay “Having worked as a chef for over 20 years and catered for hundreds of weddings, I have seen considerable shifts in food choices and dining styles, especially in recent years. However, there are some traditions that are here to stay. One of my absolute favourite wedding traditions and one that I consider the most important part of the wedding reception is of course, the cutting of the cake, as it symbolises the newly-wed couple’s first ‘marital duty’. With that being said, over the past few years many couples have decided to move away from the expense of the traditional three-tiered cake, and we have seen cupcakes, macarons, donuts and cheesecakes grown in popularity. Here at The Rabbit, cakes can even be found hanging from a suspended structure, which of course matches the theme of the day. Remember there is no such thing as over the top when it comes to weddings.” Determine Your Style Another important aspect to consider when planning your special day is the style in which you choose to dine, with many now moving away from the formality of the top table set up. More
recently, we have even catered for weddings where the happy couple move around the room for each course, so that they can enjoy their food with different people throughout the meal, which I thought was a lovely idea! At The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat’s wedding venue, The Loft, we offer long banqueting style tables, which have proven popular with our newlyweds as it provides a more intimate dining setting and also takes away the pressure of designing a seating plan.” Rethinking Traditions The food and drink you choose to serve are an important element of your wedding party – so you can use this as another opportunity to show off your personalities and tastes. It may not seem like a big decision now, but it can really set the tone for the evening. The traditional four-course dinner will always be a popular choice, with vegan and vegetarian options becoming increasingly higher in demand. We have recently introduced a full menu to cater to these dining preferences at The Rabbit, as it is important that venues recognise that this is not a dietary requirement, but a lifestyle that should be given the same due consideration as others. In recent years, we have found that sharing food has grown in popularity. Couples are now opting for grazing boards, mixed platters and dessert buffets, removing the formality of a sitdown meal and creating an atmosphere where friends and family can come together and catch up over some great food. The mini dessert table at The Rabbit always goes down a treat as it offers guests a chance to sample all our sweet treats. The trouble is knowing when to stop! I’m sure that everyone has experienced the dreaded hunger that kicks in between the wedding ceremony and reception. Whilst some like to serve finger food and platters on arrival, food trucks are very on trend right now, serving everything from pizza and burgers to ice-cream and gelatos in the hotter months.”
Thinking Outside the Box Every happy couple desires a wedding day that their guests will remember for the rest of their lives and our couples always put so much extra thought into showing their guests a really good time from start to finish. To add a personal touch to the day, you can have a bit of fun with the food, using it to tell your story. Why not serve the wine you had on your first date, the champagne you toasted when you got engaged, or even create a bespoke cocktail with meaningful names - the sky really is the limit. At The Rabbit lately we have had some very quirky ideas that really elevate the guests’ experience, and one in particular that springs to mind is the trending ‘Build Your Own’ craze. We have seen prosecco bars where guests can personalise drinks with toppings of their choice, grazing cones to fill with your preferred meats and cheeses and my personal favourite, a crisp wall to build your own crisp sandwiches - a true Irish delicacy!” Your Wedding Your Way “I bet you didn’t think there was so much to consider when it comes to the food choices for your wedding day, but it really can set the tone for the day and it is always one thing that sticks in your guests’ minds. If you want to create a laid-back day that has very little traditional structure then go all out with grazing platters, dessert tables or perhaps even food trucks, to make it personal to you. If you want to serve the traditional wedding feast that you have always dreamt of, then go for it and perhaps we have inspired you with a few ideas on how you can use food and drink to tell your love story.” The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat is part of Galgorm Collection, Northern Ireland’s premier group of wedding destination hotels, bars and restaurants.

Ulster Tatler speaks to Cherry Love from Lovely Looks Boutique on...
What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? I am very much looking forward to having all the family together this Christmas and time off to enjoy our little granddaughter. What is the best Christmas gift you have ever recieved? The best Christmas present would have to be my Jimmy Choos from my husband, especially as he thought of them without any prompting! However, just having the family together is a gift in itself. Do you have any advice on Christmas gift planning and how to stay organised as well as within a budget? Start buying your gifts early as then you can choose what you really want and not what’s left over in December! I love buying smaller items and putting them together as a gift instead of one big present unless of course, one big present is what the person needs or wants. If you start shopping early you can budget better over a few months instead of buying gifts from your last pay cheque before Christmas. Make good use of the local shops offering Christmas clubs as you can pay off as and when suits you. What are some good ideas for stocking fillers or secret santa presents? Some great stocking filler or secret santa ideas are practical items like socks, scarves, gloves, earrings, brooches, jewellery or even a gift voucher for a local shop. It’s always great to support your local businesses as they will help you budget with Christmas clubs and also give great advice on gift buying.

With expertise in prints by Old Master, Modern, and Contemporary artists, Sotheby’s Prints Department offers a wide range of graphic works for both first-time buyers and established collectors. Artisan distillers
Glenwinny distillery is located in the picturesque village of Lisbellaw, in County Fermanagh. Founder and Distiller Margaret Elliott-Tredinnick recently returned from living in Bristol for nearly 20 years with the view of starting an artisanal whiskey distillery.
T
he distillery will produce small batch pot still Irish spirits using organic and heritage malts. The distillery has now entered its final stages of commissioning and will begin full production in January 2023. The first release of Glenwinny single pot still whiskey is planned for early 2026, prior to this a range of exciting muscovado rums and full grain Poitíns are planned for release. ‘We are intentionally a small distillery, we need to be agile, creative and experimental in our offering. We will be producing limited quantities using two flame heated 500 litre copper pot stills, creating spirits with rich and vibrant character’. Customers will have the opportunity to tour the distillery and enjoy tastings from Spring 2023.
With the alcohol licencing laws in Northern Ireland as they are it ‘made sense’ to buy a public house with a licence which would allow for the sale of the spirits direct to the public. Margaret is passionate about small producers and showcasing their produce, ‘on the flip side the licence has allowed us to have our own Free House, The Dog & Duck Inn, which was something that was always on my bucket list. ‘Small producers have few outlets for their products here within Ireland, so it was very important for me that I have a Free House to showcase independent producers- which has been very well received’. 13 independent beers, ciders and selected spirits are complimented by a modern British/Irish food menu, created by Head Chef Dave Cooper, which is available Thursday to Sunday. ‘It’s been alot of
hard work but it was always an aspiration to have a dog friendly country inn and by chance we have done it – on the way to creating a distillery. We recently discovered that we are the furthest west pub in the United Kingdom providing traditional cask ale- which is nice to be known for’. This project is very much a phased approach. The opening of the Free House with food is now complete, Phase two will see the distillery opening, Phase 3 will be the addition of accommodation and Phase four sees the opening of a fine dining restaurant experience. The distillery will also be a registered wedding venue soon allowing for a less conventional wedding experience. ‘Nothing we do here is normal or conventional, I would like to think that we offer something a little different, in everything we do’.

What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? Top of my list this year is a very well-earned rest, a box of champagne and four days in my PJs with no questions asked! It has been absolutely non-stop here since we opened The Dog & Duck Inn in June this year, so a few days off would be great. If I were being materialistic- I ‘need’ a new Barbour Tarras bag in Olive- mine is now 22 years old and there are holes in places there shouldn’t be. What is the best Christmas gift you have ever recieved? A custom-made hammered silver cuff bracelet which my husband had made for me. I always wear a cuff- they are strong and robust- a bit like its owner!

THE WILD ATLANTIC WAY
Do you have any advice on Christmas gift planning and how to stay organised as well as within a budget? My family and I always agree really early on that there is a budget that we should stick too. This idea lasts for about two weeks and then we tend to buy what we like for each other!!
STAY & DINE IN THE HEART OF DONEGAL TOWN TO EXPLORE THE WILD ATLANTIC WAY
What are some good ideas for stocking fillers or secret santa presents? I never had a stocking at Christmas, it wasn’t until I met my husband and I had my first Christmas with his family that I had one. I have now stolen the idea of putting an orange at the bottom of the stocking and filling it with small items like gold chocolate coins, face packs, mini cheeses, new socks, small bottles of liquors etc. which works really well. My experience of secret Santa presents is always trying to get who you want to give gifts to by whatever means possible (swapping, bartering etc)- as the better you know a person the better your gift will be!

Abandoned Ireland Abandoned Ireland, by Rebecca Brownlie, travels the length and breadth of the island of Ireland visiting and documenting our for-gotten buildings, highlighting their social importance, and bringing their stories back to life through the medium of photography. From Big Houses to humble cottages, schools to prisons, churches to dance halls, these buildings may now be abandoned, but they are far from empty. As a pho-tographer, Brownlie’s instincts are remarkable. In the seemingly ruined and mundane she finds diamonds in the rough; her images of the ordinary ephemera of past lives – dusty love letters, rusting spectacles, photographs yellowed and curled with age – paint the pictures of real people and full lives. Rebecca Brownlie’s photography
reverberates with the echoes of our ancestors. Bursting with engaging and often surprising details, each haunting photograph is an invitation to immerse yourself in history, and an Ireland long gone.
About the Author
Rebecca Brownlie grew up in a small rural village in Co. Down. When she was just twelve years old, she won her first camera on a TV game show and her love of photography was sparked. From
that day on, a camera is rarely far from her side. Her pas-sion for abandoned buildings and love of photography have led her to appear on several local television shows featuring some of Ireland’s lost buildings. She is an avid adventurer, and can be regularly found hiking up mountainsides with her four-legged friend and children in tow. Abandoned Ireland by Rebecca Brownlie is available from Merrion Press, bookshops and online booksellers.
COMPETITION

Pause and Rebalance Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Galgorm Spa to experience the new OTO CBD treatment.
T
here is nothing I love more than getting a spa treatment, from facials, to reflexology and massages – it is the ultimate way to treat your mind, body and soul. The spa at Galgorm leads the way in spa experiences in Northern Ireland and recently launched a“Refocus and Balance” day spa package in partnership with OTO CBD. CBD, or cannabidiol, has been seen everywhere over the past few years in oil drops, vitamins and lotions, with it being hyped as a natural remedy to elevate the likes of; stress, anxiety, muscle aches, sports injuries and arthritis. With its relaxing qualities it seems only right that it is used for massages, so I couldn’t wait to experience it for myself. On arrival to the spa itself, I already felt relaxed – it exuded an ambient atmosphere with tranquil music and sumptuous smells filling the air. Once I had slipped into a cosy robe and slippers, my spa therapist showed me to the treatment room, while my guest got to explore the thermal village. This treatment is all encompassing, covering everything from head to toe – and starting with toes I had a lovely, relaxing footbath, which was just a taste of what was to come. My therapist then introduced me
to the OTO CBD products, with a choice of three oils to pick from; rejuvenate, re-energise and relax. All three oils have a unique scent, and the scent which appeals to you the most is the one your body needs. For me, it was the third scent that I liked the best, as it was sweet and floral. The oil that I selected focused on relaxation – to pause and re-balance the body. This is exactly what I felt like I needed. Another unique aspect of this treatment was the Quartz bed that I lay on. It featured thousands of heated quartz beads, which mould around your body like a cocoon. I sometimes find that massage beds can feel rigid and uncomfortable, defeating the purpose of having a relaxing massage, whereas this bed made me feel like I was floating. The treatment started with some guided deep breathing to allow my body to fully relax, followed by exfoliated brushing to prepare my skin for soaking up all the magnificent oils. Then it was onto a musclerelieving massage throughout the whole back of my body using a combination of hand techniques, bamboo rollers and handpicked crystals. This treatment wouldn’t feel out of place on a wellness resort in Bali – it certainly didn’t feel like I was a 20-minute
drive from my house. With sitting at a desk during the week and then playing hockey at the weekends my muscles (and the knots in my back) needed a good workout, so my body was definitely thanking me for having this done. It finished with a massage of the décolleté, face and scalp to relieve tension and I could feel my stresses just slip away. It is safe to say that I didn’t want the treatment to end. However, it didn’t end there – I got to spend some relaxation time in the Orangery afterwards, where I was treated to a herbal tea and refreshing sorbet. I then met my friend in the thermal village for a soak in the outdoor hot tub, followed by lunch in the Elements café. Here I had a delicious bacon and brie panini, while my friend had a Caesar salad – it was the perfect end to a relaxing morning at the spa. For the rest of the day and into the week my body was still feeling the benefits of having been refreshed and rejuvenated. I can’t wait to go back – it will definitely be appearing at the top of my Christmas list this year! OTO CBD Signature Treatment Duration: 60 minutes, Price: from £95 For more information visit www.galgorm.com

The Mayor welcomed Council’s ‘With An Artist’s Eye’ exhibition project partners and special guests to launch the exhibition at The Braid.
‘With an Artist’s Eye’ Exhibition An exhibition at The Braid in Ballymena features a range of late Victorian and Edwardian era photographs – captured just before the outbreak of the First World War. The photographic exhibition entitled ‘With an Artist’s Eye’ showcases 100 photographs selected from the Mary Alice Young Collection - held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Noel Williams, held a civic reception to launch the exhibition. Mary Alice Young’s great grandson, Christopher Brooke of Galgorm Castle, initiated a partnership with PRONI and Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to share the photographs with the public assisted by his sister, Juliana Grose. The photographs cover a range of themes from intimate family portraits to leisure time pursuits, alongside the natural world and working life beyond the gates of the big house demesne. Some of
the photographs are more experimental in style and demonstrate an artistic temperament and a willingness to try new things as the art of photography changed with technological innovations. The exhibition also provides background information on the technical and preventive conservation techniques employed by PRONI, while placing Mary Alice Young in context as a female photographer in late 19th century Ireland. The exhibition, which has free admission, is on until Saturday 4 February 2023, when it will transfer to the Public Record Office in Belfast as part of their Centenary year programme. For further information please contact Mid-Antrim Museum at The Braid, Ballymena email: braidmuseum@ midandeastantrim.gov.uk or telephone: (028) 2563 5077

How long have you lived / worked in the Ballymena area? I was born in Ballymena and have lived here my whole life. I started working as an apprentice barber and then over time built up my clientele and opened my own business, Laird Law Male Grooming.
Are there any festive events / activities in Ballymena you are looking forward to this Christmas? Every year we take the boys to meet Santa in the Tower Centre and then treat them to hot chocolate and crepes. Do you have any Christmas traditions? Every year my eldest son Toby puts the star at the top of our tree. We all put our matching Christmas pjs on and watch a Christmas film and then before bed we read A Night Before Christmas. In the shop some clients bring in their own beer they’ve made and we have a drink together. What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? I have everything I need but the Cool FM cash call would be good if Santa can pull some strings!

Northern Ireland fostering social worker wins prestigious fostering award Fiona Fitzgerald from Newtownabbey has won a Fostering Excellence Award, the UK’s most prestigious fostering accolade, recognising her exceptional contribution to foster care. The Action for Children fostering social worker won the ‘Outstanding Contribution – Social Worker Award’ at The Fostering Network’s annual Fostering Excellence awards ceremony which took place at Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre on 10 November, and was sponsored by The Mortgage Brain. Fiona has worked for Action for Children Northern Ireland since 2011. She was nominated by her manager, David Montgomery, who said: “Fiona is an extraordinary social worker who gives her all to ensure children can achieve the best they can. She is not only an inspiration to our entire fostering service, but everyone working with children in care.” Over the years, Fiona has supported children through thick and thin. Each time she has been fully committed to achieving the best outcomes for the young people involved, which has enabled her to bring about
incredible things for children and young people in foster care. One example is a young person who moved in with one of Fiona’s foster carers had experienced multiple moves, dropped out of education and refused to engage with adults. Fiona worked tirelessly with the foster carer, the young person and their social worker to implement a meticulously executed care plan. The result was that the young person, in their words, had the chance to experience a ‘normal life.’ Elaborating on this, Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network, says: “Congratulations to Fiona on winning the Fostering Excellence Award. “Every year it’s a privilege to hear the inspiring stories of those within the fostering community. We are delighted to shine a light on these incredible people, celebrate their achievements and show our appreciation for them. “Our winners and everyone else involved in foster care should be extremely proud of themselves.”

Larchfield Estate – Irelands Carbon Negative Venue Larchfield Estate is a privately run, exclusive hire venue based in the heart of the Co. Down countryside. Operating since 2007 as an events venue it has expanded to hold two venues onsite and 16 overnight self-catering rooms which are open to the public. Just 20 minutes from Belfast, and 1 hour 30 minutes from Dublin, the Georgian estate hosts private, corporate and charity events, family stays and group retreats. When companies host an event or team retreat, family groups stay overnight in one of the self-catering rooms or someone hosts a special celebration in the Barn at Larchfield Estate the amount of carbon produced is automatically offset on site making this County Down heritage venue one of the very few companies across the UK able to state they are beyond carbon zero i.e. Carbon Negative. A great plus for those CSR targets!
‘Opening up Larchfield Estate to offer world class facilities coupled with a fantastic, dedicated service has enabled us to enact our duty to protect the heritage and environs that make this 600-acre Georgian estate the breathtakingly special place that it is. We feel passionate about our role as custodians and being carbon negative is a huge part of this, protecting it for future generations.’ For more information please visit www.larchfieldestate.co.uk.
Since 2015 Larchfield have reduced their scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by an impressive 74% - this is notwithstanding company growth. Steps taken include: - Solar Panel installation - LED Lights across the property - Biomass Boiler, fin tube piping & strat fans to replace diesel generator & electric heating - Thermostats in main rooms - Automated sensor lighting As well as reducing consumption and waste carbon is sequestered in 180 acres of forestry onsite and green field pastures. GIANT SPIRIT AWARDS
Seamus Heaney HomePlace celebrates major success at Tourism NI Awards The ‘Giant Spirit Awards’ took place recently in the Grand Ballroom of the Slieve Donard Resort. The awards celebrate excellence and innovation in the industry over the past two years. Seamus Heaney HomePlace was delighted to receive the coveted award of Most Innovative Large Tourism Business. Seamus Heaney HomePlace was significantly impacted during the pandemic with closures resulting in visitors unable to visit the exhibition or engage in the Arts and Education programmes. Seamus Heaney HomePlace recently extended their experience to include ‘Open Ground’; a unique visitor experience centred around five locations important to the life and literature of Seamus Heaney.
Councillor Córa Corry, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council which owns and operates Seamus Heaney HomePlace, said: ‘Open Ground is a special and inspirational addition to the Mid Ulster area, and indeed the first of its kind globally. I am immensely proud of all those from Mid Ulster who were shortlisted for a Giant Spirit Award and this reflects extremely well on the on-going tourism efforts in the locality. I am especially pleased that Seamus Heaney HomePlace has been recognised for its innovation through winning this award, and I would of course encourage everyone to take-in first-hand this awardwinning experience.’ Brian McCormick, Manager of Seamus
Heaney HomePlace who collected the award noted: ‘We were thrilled to take home the award of Most Innovative Large Tourism Business in Northern Ireland at the recent Giant Spirit Awards. This award is recognition for the hard work and efforts of all the team. Moving Seamus Heaney HomePlace outdoors and bringing Seamus Heaney’s work into the actual landscape which provided so much inspiration, is a truly unique way to present his poems. Nowhere else in the world reflects a writer’s work in this way, and we take great pride in being recognised at such a prestigious awards ceremony.’

Rockport Golf Scholarship Star
Nurse of the Year Nuala Stuart, Deputy Sister in the Regional Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast was awarded ‘Nurse of the Year’ at the inaugural Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Awards 2022.
There was much excitement recently as Molly O’Hara from Rockport School, signed her agreement with South Dakota State University. Molly, who has been playing golf from the age of eight and is a member of our Rockport Golf Academy Elite Squad, will complete her A Levels and travel to USA in August to take up the prestigious scholarship. Molly has been on Ulster panels leading to Junior Caps for Ulster and Ireland and Senior Caps for Ulster, and this achievement is testament to Molly’s hard work, dedication and commitment to the sport. Headmaster, Mr George Vance, said; “This is a truly magnificent achievement by Molly. A US golf scholarship is such an attractive option for talented student-athletes worldwide and competition for places is therefore incredibly high. Indeed, it is becoming ever more competitive year on year, given that the US college golf system produces the majority of golfers on the LPGA Tour. Molly’s strong golf and academic credentials, as well her sheer determination to succeed, have contributed to this success. Great stuff.” Molly is pictured signing her agreement alongside her Dad, Mum and brother Harry.
Presenting Role For Joel M We expected big things from magician, Joel Mawhinney when he won ‘Celebrity of the Year’ at our Ulster Tatler Awards in September, so it came as no surprise when he was announced as Blue Peter’s 41st presenter – following in the footsteps of fellow Bangorian, Zoe Salmon. We wish him all the best in his exciting new role. Check out page 66 for a full interview with Joel.

EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
UPHOLD: New Collections Launch 35 DP, a stunning space on Donegall Place, Belfast, was recently transformed into a vibrant gallery for the launch of UPHOLD: New Collections. This group exhibition, produced by arts organisation Household, brought together artwork made by some of Northern Ireland’s most exciting contemporary artists, designers and collectives. When I arrived, the space was already bustling with guests examining the works on display by 25 practitioners and two artist collectives. Each of the original pieces of artwork were selected by an experienced panel of curators and the result is a showstopping collection rich with diversity and showcasing content that tells stories and offers rich material to start important conversations. Themes and issues that are explored include displacement, belonging and nostalgia; transgression and resistance; individual and collective expressions of self; queer identity and desire; nature the body and society through a variety of media including photography, sculpture, painting, textiles, print, ceramics, drawing, design, and installation. Guests at the launch night included: Esther Haller-Clarke of Haller-Clarke - who helped support UPHOLD in finding a home at 35 DP; Catalyst Arts’ Manuela Moser; and exhibiting artists Rachael CampbellPalmer, John Rainey, and Thomas Wells. On the night, I got speaking to Ciara Hickey from Household, who said: “UPHOLD was set up to promote Northern Irish art. We established a non-profit digital platform for selling and promoting the work of artists based in or working in Northern Ireland. In this exhibition, we have some of the best contemporary and visual artists, including Turner prize-winners and artists who have exhibited internationally in some of the best galleries of the world. All of the works here are for sale and include a huge range of different mediums and concepts.” UPHOLD: New Collections launched on the 3rd November and ran until 20 November.

Aftersun Premiere The 22nd Belfast Film Festival closed in style with the Irish premiere of Aftersun. Screened at Cineworld in Belfast, a glittering array of guests turned out for the closing ceremony, including Belfast Lord Mayor Tina Black, actor Martin McCann, journalist Donal McIntyre, author Laurence McKeown, Film Hub NI’s Sara Gunn-Smith and Hugh Odling-Smee, and QFT’s Ellen Reay, to name a few. Guests were warmly welcomed on the night by Belfast Film Festival programmer Jessica Kiang, who said: “Being able to bring these films, especially films from emerging film makers, has meant so much. It’s what we believe in; we believe in the future of cinema, we believe in the future of Belfast’s centrality to that future, and we also believe in the optimism that sometimes can feel a little out of reach. And none of that would be possible if people didn’t actually come to the movies.” Before Aftersun was shown to the 400

strong audience, the winners of the Festival’s inaugural International Film Competition, selected by a jury comprising of BAFTA and Academy-Award-winning director Andrea Arnold, renowned actor Stephen Rea and producer Catherine Bray, were announced. Davy Chou’s Return to Seoul, was named Best Film; Breakthrough Performance went to two actors, Rosy McEwen and Kerrie Hayes, for their performances in Blue Jean; the award for Outstanding Craft Contribution was given to Ioseb ‘Soso’ Bliadze, and Taki Mumladze, for their work together as the screenwriters of A Room of My Own; and two winners were named for the Short Film Competition - Mark Keane for Sour Milk, and Joe Loftus for Still Up There. As lights dimmed, the audience were then treated to a video message from the stars of Aftersun, Paul Mescal (Normal People) and newcomer Frankie Corio, before the film rolled. Aftersun, which was written and
directed by Charlotte Wells is a poignant and moving father-daughter drama. Sophie (Frankie Corio) reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories real and imagined fill the gaps between as she tries to reconcile the father she knew and the man she didn’t. The film, which has autobiographical elements, is simply stunning. The filming is unique, bold and beautiful whilst the two lead performances from Mescal and Corio are utterly mesmerising. Powerful, moving and unapologetically raw, this is a movie that stayed with me long after the credits rolled. Once again the Belfast Film Festival has set the bar incredibly high. The quality of films through out was exceptional but in my opinion they really did save the best for last. The Irish premiere of Aftersun and closing ceremony of the Belfast Film Festival, took place on 12 November.

NI Music Prize 2022 The NI Music Prize returned to the Ulster Hall in November, for a live showcase of some of the best music artists Northern Ireland has to offer. The event, which was organised by the Oh Yeah Centre, also went out live on BBC Radio Ulster. It was a special night showcasing artists spanning 50 years right through to some of the freshest new talent the country has to offer. There were memorable moments from Robocobra Quartet, Rory Nellis, Cherym, Leo Miyagee, SOAK and last year’s ATL Contender winners Dea Matrona. Barry Devlin of Horslips received the Oh

Yeah Legend Award and Mike Edgar gave him a rousing introduction. The evening played out with some of Horslips’ greatest songs, getting the fully seated venue on its feet. The evening also included a special Outstanding Contribution to Music presentation to screen composer Sheridan Tongue made by PRS for Music. Big moments included Robocobra Quartet ‘Living Isn’t Easy’ taking Best Album supported by PPL, the big award of the night decided by a panel earlier that evening. went to The Florentinas. Charlotte Dryden from the Oh Yeah Centre said; “ What a night and brilliant showcase! I am so proud of the Northern Irish music community. Well done to all the winners. A huge amount of work goes into an event like this and we are committed to giving our talent the best possible platform through this event. That’s why it is so reassuring that our supporters and sponsors understand this and get behind this event. Music contributed £345 million to the NI economy pre covid and with the right conditions we can exceed that post covid. Challenges remain, but just imagine what we could do with the right investment. It’s why we need to support local music.” The NI Music Prize 2022 took place on 16 November.

EMMA FITZPATRICK ART EXHIBITION
Inspired by her love of our breathtaking Irish coastlines and scenery, Belfast artist Emma Fitzpatrick is delighted to present a solo exhibition of large-scale contemporary impasto-style oil paintings for the modern home. Emma states: “We come from a small island where we are surrounded by the most beautiful shorelines and rocky headlands. We are never far from the water’s edge. For most of my life I have been looking to the edges of our island for comfort and inspiration as many of us do. This series explores the edges of our rugged landscape and our connection to it.” Her paintings are available to view at Arts for All gallery in Belfast until 5th January 2023 or online at emmafitzpatrickart.com. 160

BOOK EXTRACT
It Won’t Always Be Dark At Half Past Four
This month we feature an extract from ‘It Won’t Always Be Dark At Half Past Four’ by Sheila Nugent. Sheila is originally from her beloved Cookstown, but today, when she is not teaching reflexology all over Ireland, she can be found gazing out at the swans on the water at her tranquil new home in Bundoran, Donegal. Sheila is passionate about sharing her tragic, turbulent yet terrific life story with as many people as possible in the hope it will inspire, comfort, inform and heal hearts and minds everywhere.
Foreward: The differences between the moth, the butterfly and the caterpillar are that the butterfly flies in bright sunshine, the moth prefers to fly in darkness and the caterpillar doesn’t fly at all but crawls along the hard rough earth. I am enough. I am not stupid; I am not fat; I am not inferior because I am a girl. I am strong; I am confident; I am a survivor, and I love myself not for what I do or say but for the powerful woman I am right now! It has taken me 40 years to be able to say this, and it has taken every ounce of courage to declare it in this book, my book! My husband Donald says I’m like Ronnie Corbett; I start on one story and go off to a million others before returning to the original one. I prefer to think of myself as a butterfly, flitting from one place to the next, never settling for too long and always returning to where I started off. I am always on the move and always on the lookout for other butterflies with broken wings! Before I flew to freedom with my flamboyant butterfly wings, I was the caterpillar.
For 40 years, I crawled laboriously along into many dangerous and soul-destroying territories. When my beautiful baby boy died from sudden infant death syndrome in 1981, I did find a set of wings, but they were the wings of the moth, not the butterfly. The moth – who prefers to fly in darkness while the butterfly heads straight into the sunlight. I flitted around in the darkness of my soul, consumed by denial for years before a chance landing into reflexology catapulted me into the sunshine. Since my awakening and getting my butterfly wings, they have been damaged more times than I care to imagine. I am determined to keep exercising them, not to fly away from the realities of life like the moth, but to breathe deeply and meet them head on like the butterfly. Only when you face your fears can you learn to heal. I choose to heal while basking in the sunshine rather than wrangling in the darkness. I would encourage you, dear readers, to do the same. My passion is to help others find their wings; to lead others to sunshine and healing. Reflexology came into my life to take me from darkness to light! I did not start my journey knowing anything about reflexology. I started it at the end of a litany of courses, which were all just a desperate attempt to escape my life! Keep doing; keep working; keep talking; but whatever you do, Sheila, don’t feel! When I finally let my pain out and my feelings in during a workshop by the psychiatrist Dr Elizabeth Kubler-Ross called ‘Life Death and Transition’, my reflexology family were there to nurture and support me every step of the way.
I feel so privileged and blessed to have woven the collective energies of so many vibrant students and clients into my tapestry of life. I am happy now, flitting from this place to that, teaching what I love. I am a holistic reflexology therapist whose work has impacted thousands of people over the last 40 years. I have trained thousands of people, and I will continue to do so for as long as this is where my ‘sole/soul journey’ takes me.
‘It Won’t Always Be Dark At Half Past Four’ is now available on Amazon and in selected bookstores.

The Word
Fostering With A Difference Action for Children have built a fostering service in Northern Ireland that they are proud of. Why? Because their fostering families are at the heart of everything they do. As Avery, fostering services manager, said: “Our foster carers aren’t just a piece of paper or a number. They are not just an assessment. In our fostering service, everybody knows your name. You are a person. You are a potential family in the making.” Stability is key at Action for Children. The charity specialises in creating stable long-term fostering families. Every time a young person is moved, it has a detrimental effect on them. A longterm home provides them with the opportunity to put down roots and to experience family life. It can give them a second chance to have a childhood. Matching is so important in finding the right home for a young person. Action for Children consider the skills and strengths of foster carers and the needs of a young person. Time and time again, this extra time and consideration has resulted in strong matches and stable placements. Nicky, a foster carer, said: “Action for Children are all about matching the right child to you and your home. During the assessment process they had the time to get to know me as a person. They knew what child would be suited to me. They couldn’t have got it more right.” To ensure foster carers can fully look after the young people in their care, Action for Children offer a package of intensive support. This includes a 24/7 support line, a dedicated fostering social worker, peer support groups, and developmental training. The fostering service also has a low turnover of staff and so support is consistently provided by a familiar face. Jennifer, a foster carer, said: “We rely on our social workers a lot. Without them, you couldn’t do this job. If we need advice or help, we just lift up the phone. To be fair, it doesn’t matter who answers. Because it’s a smaller organisation, they all know our case. It’s like a family of social workers.”

f overblown lips and chipmunk cheeks spring to mind when you think of facial rejuvenation, it’s time to look at Threadlifts. Cosmetech Clinics are focused on creating subtle results using Threadlifts making them the perfect choice for those looking for a natural look. “This approach has become increasing popular within the practice“ says Mr Smith,
that a good practitioner should always encourage an assessment of the whole face before preparing a treatment plan to rejuvenate the face. Product selection is also key, he adds. In his clinics he favours a combination of Passive and Active Threads to create the best results.Threads can be used for a number of Cosmetic purposes from contouring the jawline to lifting the brows and defining
