― THINGS YOU MUST HEAR ― IN KATOWICE, THE UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC

Music in Katowice comes in all shapes and sizes. Clearly, the city has a musical heart, beating deep underground, since our grandfathers sang in amateur choirs and played instruments in brass bands (yes, it’s a miner tradition, cultivated to this day), and we’re making music of all genres. From the philharmonic to hip-hop. From blues to electronica. With such traditions, it would simply be improper not to continue them. So put on your headphones and turn on some Polish music! Broadcasting straight from Katowice.

6) THINGS YOU MUST HEAR

Classical music. This is where eminent Polish composers lived (and what’s more important – created their pieces). It must be the air! Examples? Wojciech Kilar who composed the score for Coppola’s Dracula and Andrzej Wajda films, as well as absolutely marvelous orchestral pieces. He always liked our city and even though he traveled constantly (he came up with the brilliant theme for Jane Campion’s Portrait Of A Lady on a plane, for example) and could live anywhere in the world, from London to Hollywood – he always returned to his home in Katowice. Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, known for his Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs, one of the very few classical music composers who topped the global charts, lived and worked in Katowice until his death. Our Academy of Music (one of the best in the country) gave the world Krystian Zimerman, who developed his skills under the guidance of professor Jasiński. Naming all the renowned graduates of our academy would take hours, anyway…

We have great concert halls, hosting some really amazing shows. We have international competitions: for conductors (The Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors) and composers (The Karol Szymanowski International Composers Competition), the Katowice Kultura Natura festival, and the highly-rated Polish Modern Music Festival of Premieres. If you want to drop by for a show, you should book tickets at least six months in advance. # S E C O N D LY > > > > >

We like jazz and blues. The Polish King of Blues is the Katowice-born Irek Dudek, who has been organizing the Rawa Blues Festival for over 30 years. Our city boasts the unique Silesian Blues Trail, with a guide in the shape of a multimedia app. Still not enough? Well, how about the fact that the first Polish Jazz and Popular Music Department (renamed to the Jazz Institute) schooled almost all the renowned Polish musicians. Well, all of them applied here at least, as studying here is the dream of every young Polish jazzman. A word of caution, though – the Katowice JazzArt Festival and the Silesian Jazz Festival always attract huge crowds.

8) THINGS YOU MUST HEAR

Freestyle, bounce, and breakdancing also run in our bloodstream. If it weren’t for our grey block estates, the history of Polish hip-hop would’ve been entirely different. This is where the legendary Magik dropped his lines as a member of Kaliber 44 and Paktofonika (be sure to check them out! You don’t even need to know the language to feel the power, the desperation, and the energy of Magik, Fokus, and Rahim). Today, the tradition is upheld by Miuosh, who burst onto the charts and into the hearts and minds of Silesians and all Poles with his daring rap lyrics, dropped against the music of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), the country’s best symphony orchestra, based in Katowice, of course. Gutek also tried to rap, but ultimately he chose reggae music, performed with the Indios Bravos collective.

OFF FESTIVAL

# F O U R T H LY > > > > >

We’re also doing pretty well in the fields of rock and electronic music. And bold music in general. Half of Europe comes to our summer festivals, dancing outdoors twice a year: at the Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival, an amazing party with world’s best electronic music, and OFF Festival, spearheaded by Artur Rojek, a musician and promoter as renowned as the festival itself.

# F I F T H LY > > > > > > > >

Music in Katowice in numbers: we have 24 concert halls (big and small), 30 music clubs, 7 labels, 11 music stores, and 12 recording studios. We have marvelous orchestras and choirs: the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Silesian Philharmonic, the Silesian Chamber Orchestra, the OMN (New Music Orchestra), the Camerata Silesia Katowice City Singers’ Ensemble, and the Silesian Quartet. We also have something from entirely different musical worlds – we have heavy metal and hard rock festivals (Metalmania is allegedly the biggest festival of its kind in our part of the continent, and the Metal Hammer Festival draws crowds from the world over), and Poland’s biggest techno party (Mayday). What don’t we have? Whatever it is, we’re sure we’ll have it next year.

10) KATOWICE CITY GUIDE

You’re in Silesia. It’s a strange piece of land, unlike any other place on Earth. Built upon coal deposits, it was once a working class region, but now it is a modern place full of cultural events. We’re famous for our dialect, design, architecture, and really good music. We’re not ashamed of our traditions. We have black coal-shaped soap and a juicer in the shape of Spodek, the architectural symbol of Katowice. We also have delicious food! Don’t hesitate to go sightseeing around our city – green and full of colors, contemporary and traditional. Enjoy!

Katowice’s architecture is a perfect reflection of the city’s history. One can still find traces of its industrial past. There’s no shortage of modernist edifices here, reminding you of the rapid growth rate of the city in the interwar period. Buildings from several decades remind you of the problematic heritage of People’s Republic of Poland. There are also several contemporary constructions that are slowly becoming Katowice’s icons.

<

INDUSTRIAL

1 Nikiszowiec, Wyzwolenia Sq. area A former workers’ colony with distinctive Silesian red brick buildings. It’s a unique place that has inspired writers and filmmakers (such as Lech Majewski). It’s the city’s landmark calling card.

2 Porcelana Śląska Park, Porcelanowa 23 The buildings of the former Porcelana Śląska (Silesian Porcelain) factory were built around the year 1915. Today, it’s a lively place, the original buildings have been turned into offices of local companies and food establishments. 3 Garrison Church, Skłodowskiej-Curie 20 It’s the first functionalist religious building in Poland.

PEARLS OF MODERNISM

4 Skyscraper, Żwirki i Wigury 15-17 It’s a high-rise with a steel framing. When opened, it was one of the tallest buildings in Poland and Europe. 5 Doctor Wędlikowski’s House, PCK 10 A beautifully preserved building with a distinctive rounded corner, mast, and rooftop terrace. 6 Villa, Bratków 4 An edifice with unique steel framing. 7 Silesian Sejm Building, Jagiellońska 25 Nowadays, it serves as the seat of the Marshal’s Office and the Voivodship Office. It’s an impressive building with a cult paternoster lift – it has no doors and is continuously moving. 8 Silesian Library, Francuska 12 It’s a corner building with distinctive pillars. (11

9 Spodek, Korfantego 35 A building from outer space and the icon of the city, Spodek was built at the turn of the 1970s. In the evening, the theme from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind can be heard from the building.

POST-WAR ARCHITECTURE

q Gwiazdy, Roździeńskiego A housing estate with high-rises built on an eight-angled star plan. w Osiedle Tysiąclecia, Tysiąclecia, Piastów, Mieszka I, and Bolesława Chrobrego streets The high-rise housing estate is situated directly opposite the Silesian Park. Commonly known as “corncobs”, these buildings resemble Chicago’s Marina City towers. e Superjednostka, Korfantego 24 The so-called “housing machine” has its own power and water sources. This 15-storey building is almost 190 meters long. It sits on a reinforced concrete base, and on a clear day you can see the Tatra mountains from the top floor.

r NOSPR, Kilara Sq. 1 The new Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra building boasts a concert hall with remarkable acoustics. It’s an award-winning building and the city’s new architectonic calling card.

MODERN BUILDINGS

t CINIBA, Bankowa 11a The Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library building is coated with red sandstone, referencing the traditional Silesian red brick buildings. y ICC, Sławika i Antalla Sq. 1 The International Congress Centre (MCK), opened in 2015. This minimalist black building with a grass rooftop walkway also received multiple awards. u Academy of Music, Wojewódzka 33 The building erected at the turn of the 20th century 12) KATOWICE CITY GUIDE

of leading Polish studio JEMS Architekci is black with a grass rooftop. It fits perfectly in the space between Spodek (mirrored in ICC’s glass façade) and the historic Bogucice part of town. The building is divided into two parts by the stairs leading to the lookout terrace. From the top, it looks as if Spodek was falling from the sky, leaving marks on the green roof. How cool is that? REACH

Man (and city) does not live by music alone. Katowice isn’t short of art galleries and museums worth checking out. Most of them are situated in the city centre – all the more reason to visit. In order to get a feel for Silesia’s industrial climate and see how culture can change industrial spaces, you should visit the Silesian Museum, located in the Culture Zone near the ICC. The Museum buildings were constructed on the site of the former Katowice Mine, with most exhibition halls located underground! Apart from the exhibition, it is worth taking a ride up the former mining shaft tower – it offers a fantastic view. Near the cult Spodek building, there’s a roundabout, rondo gen. J. Ziętka, with a glassed dome. It is where the Rondo Sztuki gallery is located, curated by the Katowice Fine Arts Academy. It organizes exhibitions, but also author meetings and concerts. Walking down Korfantego Avenue towards the Katowice Main Square, it is worth dropping by the BWA Contemporary Art Gallery, situated in the 1966 exhibition pavilion. It’s impossible to miss the building, its façade adorned with distinctive reliefs. Near the Main Square, there is also the former Silesian Museum building, holding exhibitions until this day, and the SARP Architecture Gallery of the Association of Polish Architects. A 10-minute walk north of the ICC will lead you to the private Szara Gallery. It was opened over a year ago in a new location, moved from the city of Cieszyn on the Czech border. In the south part of the city centre, in the building of the Katowice City of Gardens institution (about a 15-minute walk from the Main Square), you will find several galleries, presenting different parts of the artistic spectrum. You can visit galleries such as Engram, Pojedyncza, Pusta, Gallery 5, City of Gardens Gallery, and Ściana Sztuki Dziecka, the latter presenting works made by children. The building also holds the Museum of IT and Computer History, holding almost 250 pieces, presenting the history of 14) KATOWICE CITY GUIDE

KATOWICE STREET ART FESTIVAL If while walking through Katowice you see a mural or any other artistic installation, it will probably be the product of the Katowice Street Art Festival. The event launched in 2011 now is held in the AiR (artist-in-residence) format, constantly brings the city to life, becoming an increasingly important part of its space. The festival brings the stars of Polish and international street art to Katowice. One of its participants was Dominik Cymer, who went for a walk around town with us (see p. 35). There are a few interesting works in the strict city centre that are the product of the festival: 1.Roa, Tylna Mariacka St. 11 (2012) 2.Tellas & Moneyless, Tylna Mariacka St. 13 (2012) 3.Aryz, Tylna Mariacka St. 23 (2011) 4.Supergut Studio, space near the Rawa river, between Korfantego Av. numbers 1 & 3 (2016) 5.Cleon Peterson, underground passage by Damrota St. (2014)

While in Katowice, you should try the local products. Katowice is the home of cult natural On Lemon lemonades (blackcurrant, lime, rhubarb, and cola flavours) and Yerbata – a yerba mate-based drink. They are sold in most bars and restaurants. You can also eat some local sweets – Silesian oblaty (crunchy wafers in different flavours), szkloki (sweet and sour hard candy), and kopalnioki (anise candy). They can be found in some grocery stores and the Tourist Information Centre at the Katowice Main Square. Silesian cuisine is also something you shouldn’t miss. The age-old Sunday classic dinner consists of a śląska rolada (a piece of meat wrapped around a filling of bacon, sausage, pickled gherkin, and onion), modro kapusta (boiled red cabbage with bacon and onion), and kluski śląskie (dumplings made from boiled potatoes and flour, formed in little flattened balls with a small dint). Such sets can be found in many places, for example at the Moodro Restaurant in the Culture Zone (see p. 30). > Where to buy some souvenirs? ― MUSIC TRIP ― start: International Congress Centre end: Academy of Music

You’re in the Katowice Culture Zone – a modern centre of music and art in general. In order to gain some perspective, walk onto the viewing terrace of the ICC. Looking towards the Katowice Main Square, you’ll see the Spodek on the right, and the building of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice (NOSPR) on the left.

The UFO-shaped building is the SPODEK (Sports and Event Hall, Korfantego Avenue 35 1). It is a legendary place, hosting the most important musical events in Katowice and Poland. From Sting to Kraftwerk, many music greats have played their shows here. The building opened in 1971 still looks beautiful and modern, continuously being one of the city’s trademarks. There’s no Katowice resident who hasn’t seen a show here at least once! It’s good to come here in the evening to see the building illuminated and hear the theme from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. The nearby NOSPR building (Kilara Square 1 2) is a beautiful modern structure designed by architect Tomasz Konior. It is meant to resemble the traditional miner houses ( familoks) and it does, although only in colour and the distinctive red brick exterior, its rough surface is a symbol of the region. Inside NOSPR, a spacious white interior hides one of Poland’s grandest concert halls. It is worth at least a peek, since it was 28) CITY EXCURSIONS

brilliantly and meticulously designed by Japanese acoustics engineers, resembling the bowels of a pot-bellied instrument. You also must go down the giant white stairs and look inside the restaurant, the bookstore, and the chamber hall. The immediate surroundings of NOSPR are a nice place for a walk, since the paths around the building of the old Katowice Mine is a CULTURE ZONE today. It is also a musical spot – this is where the Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival takes place in the summer. From the Culture Zone, it’s easy to spot the residential towers dubbed GWIAZDY (Stars) 3. The high-rises of the Roździeńskiego housing estate became known the world over after being featured on the cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ Adore. The band played a show in Spodek and liked the landscape so much they decided to include it in the album artwork.

The path from the Culture Zone leads to Sokolska Street, where there’s another musical stop – the SILESIAN PHILHARMONIC building (Sokolska 2 4). The walk should take no more than 15 minutes. It’s a place with a long history as the building was built in 1945. The recently renovated building now boasts a great café on the rooftop (great view), but what’s more important – a pipe organ (not the only one in Katowice!) and a renovated concert hall.

(29

Walking south (about a 20-minute walk), you can visit the YOUTH PALACE (Mikołowska 26 5). The socialist-realist edifice is a sort of cultural centre, where the kids take their first (and not just musical) steps. If you skip the Palace, you can walk through the Main Square and turn into Świętego Jana Street. A walk from the Philharmonic building should take you no more than 15 minutes. Right after you pass the railway flyover, you’ll see one of Katowice’s oldest cinemas:

9 KINOTEATR RIALTO (Św. Jana 24 6). Its beautiful historic façade can be seen from afar. It’s been the city’s important music stop for years. A club, a concert hall, a bar – it is a little bit of everything and the result is truly noble. Folk and rock, jazz and club music. From the Rialto Cinema-Theatre, you can take the upward Kochanowskiego Street. On the quaint Krzywa Street near Miarki Square, you’ll find the GUITAR HISTORY MUSEUM (10-minute walk, Krzywa 4 7). You’ll find tons of strings and axes from all over the world. After walking for about 10 minutes and passing a few short blocks, you’ll reach the white building at Sejmu Śląskiego Square 2. This is the headquarters of the KATOWICE CITY OF GARDENS cultural institution 8, holding a few surprises within. First of all – the cult HIPNOZA JAZZ CLUB 9 is here. It is a pub/club, 30) CITY EXCURSIONS

famous for seriously decent food and seriously decent shows. For many years, this weird building was where the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra played many of their concerts. In order to get to the ACADEMY OF MUSIC building q, you have to walk down to Wojewódzka Street (10-minute walk tops). The Academy (Zacisze Street 3) is Silesia’s oldest university and one of the most appealing musical sites. It is a cradle for composers, classical pianists and jazzmen, eminent soloists, and band members. It is a charming place, and not only for music lovers – the building itself is impressive, combining a neo-gothic edifice with the new wing with a concert hall and movable walls, allowing to adjust the hall size to the number of musicians and people in the audience. The building is certainly worth a stroll inside – there’s a café here on top of a marvellous organ museum.

― THE BEST FOOD IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ―

The recommended dishes are Tom Kha Gai, Dim Sum, Pad Thai, Green Curry, and Butter Chicken. You can also eat ramen in three versions here: with vegetables, duck, and shrimp. It’s worth dropping by the Moodro Restaurant for second breakfast, served between noon and 2 pm. You can choose from four available breakfast menus, including interesting vegan options: four pastas or coconut milk porridge with sweet potato. The menu also includes duck and rabbit meat, rack of veal, and beef roulade with red cabbage. The menu features every breakfast variety one could desire: waffles, shakshouka, omelettes, pancakes, home-made granola, scrambled eggs with frankfurters, but also a vegetarian hummus plate. The only thing that can rival Kafej’s tasty breakfasts are the bagels – filling, varied, and simply delicious. You should leave some room for something sweet, too – pick something from the home-made tarts, brownies, meringues, tiramisu, and panna cotta. Coffee will suit every dessert – you can have a classic black, some alternatives, or even a coffee-based alcoholic drink. Currently, Mad Mick also offers seasonal options: Pulled Pork BBQ, Minute steaks (2x100g) from seasoned roast beef with pearl barley and porcinis, and a bagel with marinated turkey breast. Delicious pizzas and locally made pastas are the main treats here, but Novo’s menu features many more positions that are tempting – original appetizers, like squid stuffed with lemon risotto, or porchetta with apple mustard. Meat dishes are anything but unsophisticated: Rome-style beef tripe, beef tongue, or the ossobucco. Dessert here is a must – chocolate pudding with salty caramel sauce, Italian meringue, and Oreo crumble dirt. The restaurant also offers a great selection of Italian wines. That’s why it is good to order a plate of Italian specialties, available in a vegetarian version as well. For pasta lovers – seasonal propositions with clams, mussels and octopi. ― DOMINIK’S TRIP ― start: construction site near the ICC end: main railway station

LAST DAYS OF DOKP TOWER

I grew up in Będzin, 13 kilometers from Katowice. When I was going to Silesia, the locals would ask me: “Do you have a passport?”. There was a time you actually had to have one – Będzin was in Russia, and Katowice and all of Silesia – in Prussia. But when Poland was finally liberated, the imaginary border still remained in people’s heads. Going to Katowice was really something once. To me, the city was a huge metropolis where my parents worked. My mom was a railway employee, working in the now demolished high-rise of the Silesian District State Railways Directorate (DOKP) in room 1313, on the 13th floor. Her office window offered a view of the Katowice Mine. As a child, I admired this landscape – it looked like an industrial version of a Piko train model. Katowice was full of mystery to me – it seemed to be a fairy tale world. A different world. I’d like to take you on a Katowice trip, as seen through the eyes of a sentimental gorol – one who needs a passport to get here.

(37

We’ll start from the former site of the DOKP tower where my mom used to work. This is where a new BUILDING .KTW is being built (I call it toppled cubes). The ICC building and Spodek are nearby. Let’s walk a long straight line down Korfantego Avenue to the other side of Katowice. On the way, we’ll pass the Main Square, and the streets of Świętego Jana, Jana Kochanowskiego, and Wita Stwosza. We’ll come up to Ligonia Street (a 30-minute walk). On the left, right where Ligonia starts, there’s the ŻUROWNIA (Ligonia 16, more on this place p. 20 1). It’s worth a visit to get a taste of Silesian fusion cuisine. Most dishes served here are made with żur – a traditional Polish sour rye soup. We’ll turn right from Żurownia, walk down the Ligonia Street, turn left into Kościuszki Street and walk up to KOŚCIUSZKO PARK 2 – on the right side (15-minute walk). If it’s hica (hot), we can rest in the tree shade and look at the parachute tower I remember from trips with my father. From the park, we’ll take a cool walkway to the other side – straight to Barbary Street (5-minute walk). On the right, you’ll see GARDEN ALLOTMENTS 3 – this was our shortcut, walking with my dad to his work. From the garden plots, we’ll turn left and walk to ZAJĄCZKA STREET 4 (5 minutes). This is a calm and stylish villa neighbourhood. Zajączka is considered Katowice’s prettiest street. We’ll walk down the street, right, and immediately left, into Skłodowskiej-Curie Street. Walking down this street, we’ll ultimately reach Andrzeja Square (10 minutes), the location of a prison – more specifically, DETENTION CENTRE 5. The building is Y-shaped. It’s worth looking at it from the outside, although I wouldn’t recommend doing anything to get in.

38) CITY EXCURSIONS

5

1 From Andrzeja Square, we’ll turn into KRZYWA STREET 6 with a nice perspective, combining old architecture with the new. After a 3-minute walk, we’ll walk straight onto the GRYFNIE STORE 7, where you can buy only Silesiarelated products. I really hope that these hanyses (ethnic Silesians) have t-shirts with the word gorol written on them. Now let’s go to the RAILWAY STATION 8 (2 minutes). It’s a brand new building. The concrete “chalices” of the old building carrying the station roof were perfectly recreated. This symbol of travel signals the end of our trip. The railway station was always a strong point of Katowice’s city centre, offering communication options in every direction. From here, there are even connections to Sosnowiec and Będzin. And you don’t need a passport anymore. Dominik Cymer (b. 1976) is a graphic designer and illustrator. He co-created the Będzin Beat collective. He is the author of visual identification and graphic design of the guidebook Indunature, which sparked interest in alternative tourism and made “Silesian design” fashionable. Co-creator of Cyber Kids on Real. He lives and works in Warsaw. Dominik’s Trip was prepared during his artistic residency at the Katowice Street Art AiR Festival.

(39

― CHILL OUT SPOTS ― Although it may not be apparent at first glance, Katowice is one of Poland’s greenest cities. You should visit the city’s parks to rest or take a walk.

1 KOŚCIUSZKO PARK Katowice’s oldest park, opened in 1888. You can get there by tram (lines 6, 14, 16, 19, and 36) in 10 minutes. You will recognize this place by the parachute tower rising above the park. When it’s warm, the park delights the senses with colourful flowerbeds; in winter, it has a sledding track and squirrels root around all year long. You can visit the historic wooden church of Saint Michael the Archangel, built in 1510 and moved to Katowice from the village of Syrynia. Those who like playing petanque will also find something of their own here. The park is full of charming paths, trees, and bushes – allow yourself to get lost here.

2 SILESIAN PARK In order to reach one of Europe’s biggest municipal parks, you just have to get on a tram and head towards city of Chorzów. The trip to Silesian Park will take you only about 10 minutes, and you can get there by hopping onto tram lines 0, 1, 6, 11, and 19 at the Katowice Rondo (Roundabout). 2

40) CITY EXCURSIONS

3 Silesian Park, within the administrative city limits of Chorzów, is one of the best places around to relax. For over 60 years, it has been offering culture and R&R at over 600 hectares of: forests, meadows, ponds, waterholes, streams, socialist sculptures, atmospheric bars (we recommend Rebel Garden Café near the zoo gate – Czech beer and Czech atmosphere) and other cult features. You can walk, jog, or rollerblade here. It’s worth visiting the Legendia theme park, the zoo with the 1975 Dinosaur Valley, ride the Elka cable car, see the Silesian Planetarium (oldest and biggest in the country), the ethnographic open-air museum, the Rosarium, or the Silesian Stadium. The 1959 monumental sculpture of a giraffe is the park’s symbol.

3 VALLEY OF THREE PONDS / KATOWICE FOREST PARK Another huge park near the city centre. You can get there by bus (lines 110 and 900) from the Katowice railway station. The trip won’t take longer than 15 minutes. It’s an ideal place to relax, but also a sports and entertainment complex, with bicycle paths, volleyball fields, an open-air gym, and a water sports centre. This is where Artur Rojek whips up magical concerts during the OFF Festival. Sailplanes and airplanes fly over the heads of strollers (and festivalgoers), as the Flying Club of Silesia has its base next door at the Muchowiec airport. There’s also a stud farm here. (41
