Editor's Note

Who Do We Call a 'Virtuoso'?

This happened!

The Editor made it to F1 Grand Prix

The editor was at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix held in March 2022 in Jeddah. Hearing the sound of racing cars was beyond epic.

Editor-in-Chief @jawahertoinspire

Welcome to the 'virtuosity' issue! Let me tell you why I chose this title in particular and why it is important. To know its importance, we need to understand the meaning of the word first. Virtuosity, in definition, means the skill or the mastery you have in a particular craft. I chose it because is it crucial to recognize the virtuosos among us. May they be filmmakers, artists, designers or musicians. What do they all have in common? They are all skilled in what they do. Skill is what makes them stand out from the rest.

In this issue, we celebrate virtuosity as I have featured two talents, one is a documentary filmmaker, and the other is a bespoke designer.

ISSUE # 30- VIRTUOSITY

Al Jakar is a short historical documentary film directed by Abdulaziz Saleh. Produced in 2020, the film talks about an ancient annual race that used to be held at the Jeddah seaport in the early nineteenth century. In the meantime, old ships are docked in that place, sometimes referred to as "Al Sanabeek" cemetery. In December 2021, the film was successfully screened at the first Red Sea International Film Festival. YOU Newsletter had the pleasure to interview the maker of the film exclusively. YOU: Al Jakar sounds like an interesting documentary, what was your inspiration? AS: It was the history of the name itself. I used to know AlJaker only between car challenges, so it was new to me that this name has a long history starting with sailing boats race.

YOU: What does “AlJakar” mean and why did you pick this title? AS: I chose it because it was so commonly used in cars, but I didn't know the history of it is dated back to more than 100 years.

12

ISSUE # 30- VIRTUOSITY YOU: Who supported or discouraged the documentary idea?

YOU: Why do you think people should know about it?

AS: The first supporters were my teachers, Miss Dania Alhmerany, Miss Dania Nasef, Mr. Talal Aljabrey, and then my team.

AS: So they know how there families used to live in Jeddah.

YOU: How long did it take you to film it? AS: Around 40 days.

YOU: What was the challenges you faced to produce it? AS: The production time and post-production.

YOU: By watching the trailer, the story seems mysterious and intriguing, what’s the concept of it? AS: The film shows some history that seems to be forgotten in Jeddah city.

YOU: What message do you aim to deliver to the viewers through this film? AS: To give life to old pictures.

YOU: How did it feel being picked for the Red Sea Film Festival? AS: "I still don't believe that," playfully answered.

YOU: As a director, what comments or reviews did you receive on the film? AS: Not much because it wasn't shown in a big festival like this before, so I hope to receive feedback after that.

The film shows some history that seems to be forgotten in Jeddah city.

The Bespoke Designer Iyad Naja

ISSUE # 30- VIRTUOSITY

Iyad Naja is a Lebanese Bespoke Designer. His designs revolve around the beauty of the Arabic Calligraphy curves. From that, he found his personal style with materials such as iron and concrete.

However, Iyad does not just create beautiful art to sell, but he does valuable functional art producing sculptures for everyday items. "I create what I feel, and when I'm done making a particular idea, I go to another," said Iyad. "I showcase a piece that I have been working on for years to reach this point," he added.

I don't just create beautiful art to sell. I create functional art.

Growing up in his grandma's house, who also happened to be a poet, and majored in Arabic Literature, inspired him to work with the Arabic Alphabet. "Communicating in the Arabic Language was important to my grandma," added Naja. In honor of his grandmother, he produced tangible designs with Arabic poetry and moving stories he used to listen to when visiting her. He was able to make different designs, from poetic statements to Quranic verses. One example was "Tal Intizari" (or in English, I've been waiting for so long.) Iyad studied Graphic Design for his bachelor's at Lebanese American University. Yet, to elevate his craftsmanship, he earned his master's degree in Islamic Art & Archeticure.

ISSUE # 30- VIRTUOSITY

He is called "Iron Man" since he works with iron. "Iron is the hardest metal, but I bend iron to give it some warmth and soul," Iyad clarified.

Iyad appreciates craftsmen and the city of Beirut. Beirut is constantly being built, which gives the place resilience and continuity.

Iyad also adds meaning to his designs, such as writing on mirrors. "I write flirty statements as if the mirror is flirting with you when you look at it."

For this notion, Iyad produced his Beirut collection made of unfinished material like cement blended with cooper.

Learning about the rules of Arabic calligraphy gave Iyad an edge in his work. "This has given me a superpower." In one design, he used three fonts such as Thuluth, Kufi, and Nastaliq. In a second design, he used Alnoor verse in a work of about 5 meters long. "You can only read the verse when you stand right in front of the design," he explained. In a different work, he used a Thuluth font in a harmonious design which looked like one pattern that states, "I ask you for heaven and to protect me from fire."

I bend the solid iron to give it warmth and soul.

When it comes to his future plans, Iyad has so much in mind. He would like to make his 2.0 expansion, academic affiliations and a virtual museum. "I would like to create my encyclopedia, online courses and workshops." He added, " I want to make a link between my work and the academic field."
