2020 is definitely a year to remember, with all its ups and downs. Two things which I would recall 2020 with are, Quarantine and COVID19. Those two things happening together made this year challenging, and with challenges comes learning. Indeed, everything has a bright side, so I decided to make this issue about 'The Silver Lining,' about the things we learned in the past few months. So what's my story?! Well, I wanted to make good use of the excessive time I had at home. Sometimes even the idea of staying home doing nothing seemed so cool to me. I tried to adapt to this changing situation and to simply chill out. To my surprise, I did not feel bored at all. As the Chief Editor of a newsletter, I was running from place to place, event to event. 'Lockdown' was just the perfect timing for me to unwind and slow things down.

My Silver Lining Story

What YOU Said About YOU! #WHATYOUTHOUGHT

Beautiful To Watch

I'm very excited to view your newsletter. It's not like any other newsletter. Beautiful to watch it from iPad. It caught my eyes. - Reem

What was both convenient and entertaining to me was the fact that I could reach anyone online, thanks to technology! Who's to say you cannot do some work while staying safely and cozily at your couch? So I jumped on the Insta Live Train and interviewed a bunch of people.

It's Special Your account is special, Masha Allah - Anonymous

I also tried to take care of my body by working out and feeding my mind with knowledge by taking an online course. I was also able to catch up on some reading, some of which was an Audiobook. I think I also unleashed my creative and artistic side by creating interesting digital content like going on Tik Tok, making videos and ART.

Love it!

Your page and content totally rocks. - Vicky Matthews

Pro Work

Interestingly enough, being in a quiet environment made me notice more things that I wouldn't normally notice. I connected with nature around me by bird watching and tending to plants in my outdoor garden. Now I leave you to enjoy the different sections of this summer issue.

Nirvana Al Yousaf Not Your Average Blogger

N

irvana Abdul is a young and passionate Saudi influencer who was able to shine amidst the storm ofhuge emerging bloggers. tornado of In addition emergingto her restless fashion & lifestyle blogging career, she is also a mother of three. Yup, three! Who says motherhood is easy? Yet, she is not your average blogger. She likes wearing African turbans and have feels for mother earth. YOU Newsletter had the pleasure to interview her.

YOU: When did you start blogging?

I started a blog in 2018. I shared a lot about my style and travel before I opened my instagram account. Then later, I started my Instagram account and started sharing my outfits, lifestyle and diaries.

YOU: Did you always want to be one?

Not that exactly! My passion for fashion started when I was a little kid. I wanted to be a model then I studied fashion design. I learned how to sew and everything, but I eventually found myself more as a blogger. It's a space where everyone can share and learn.

YOU EXCLUSIVE FEATURE

I wanted to be a model...but eventually I found myself more as a blogger. YOU: How have you decided to use turbans in your fashion blogging career?

Wearing Turbans was a pure coincidence.

YOU: You recently exposed your hair on Instagram, which is a big clue you’re not a Hijabi, would you wear it less in the future?

It was a pure coincidence. I was shooting an ad in 2018, and that was when I met Sara Al Sayed who is a turbanista too. I asked her how to do it. She taught me how and surprisingly I loved how I look in it, and since that day, turban has been my signature look. look.

I will keep on wearing turbans. As I said I love how I look in turbans, and it’s my signature look.

YOU: As a Turbanisha, Turbans are considered your signature style, so how do you style your turbans?

Sustainable fashion is fashion that doesn’t hurt the planet, people or animals. They are many responsible practices (the whole process of production) and having conscious consumers. Slow fashion that is based on better ecological system and social justice.

I love love love my turban look, and I do them with the regular scarfs (‫)ﻃﺮﺣﺔ‬.

YOU: You also advocate for sustainable fashion, so how you define sustainable fashion?

Photography by Lina Mo

12

YOU: In your opinion, what is the impact of sustainable fashion on the Globe?

I think this movement started to expand and its effect around the globe is noticeable. The number of conscious consumers is increasing. People want to do something. They want to be part of the change. They demand a change in the fashion industry. Fashion is considered to be the second biggest pollutant in the world. It’s responsible for 10% of carbon footprint yearly. It is responsible for deforestation and many more. That means the change is essential here to reduce water and carbon footprint, and as a result, more clean air, oceans, balanced ecosystem and better future for our kids.

YOU: How can we, as consumers, differentiate these items in stores?

As they say, 'knowledge is power.' Knowing what are the safer fabrics for the planet could be the first step. Natural is better. Sustainable brands don’t do mass production. Sustainable brands design with zero waste in mind, so even the packaging is made of ecofriendly/sustainable materials. There are some certification to check, as well.

YOU: You founded 'The Responders', so can you tell us a little more about it?

The Responders was a small project. I wanted to start in 2017, but I got busy with work and kids. Discovering what I want to do this year, I planned to start it. It’s about the small change that I very much believe in making a huge impact towards a better planet. They are small tips and information - things that all of us can easily do and be part of eventually. There’s no planet B, so we need to do something as small as sharing the knowledge we have .

YOU: Like many entrepreneurial mothers and a mother of three, how do you balance your time?

Fashion is considered to be the second biggest pollutant in the world.

I will be very very honest when it comes to balancing time between what I want to do and as a mother. It’s not easy. It’s actually very difficult and stressful. For the meantime, I’m dedicating most of the time for the family especially my kids are still little. I manage to create time for myself before they wake up, and when they’re sleeping, always hoping for an hour or two here and there in the middle of the day, haha.

YOU: This issue is about Silver Linings, the positive things that came out of lockdown and learned from COVID19. What’s your silver lining?

Does Healthy Food Cost YOU More? A Report by Inas Inayath

YOU REPORT

N

umerous studies conducted in the west have suggested that there is no correlation between healthy food and its high cost. Yet, many studies have acknowledged that have acknowledged that there is indeed is indeed a a clear linkthere between the two.

One of the most prominent examples of this is a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health in 2013 which found that diet (rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts) costs about $1.50 more per day per person than eating an unhealthy diet (the kind full of processed foods and refined grains). It sounds like pocket change, but that's an extra $2,200 per year for a family of four. Let's dive deeper to understand what is classified as 'healthy food.' According to The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, the main elements of a nutritious intake are whole grains, a medley of vegetables and fruits, fat-free or low-fat dairy (e.g. milk, yoghurt, and cheese), a mixture of proteins (e.g. seafood, lean meats, eggs, and legumes) and Oils. Additionally, we independently studied a couple of local supermarkets to examine if there is any truth to the statement. In Store A - the consumer's favourite pasta brand costs around 4.95 riyals whereas organic pasta ranged from 18 Saudi riyals to 38 Saudi riyals. In Store B, fresh eggs are approximately 15.25 Saudi riyals whereas organic eggs were recorded to be 40 Saudi riyals. YOU also conducted a social media poll to find out if people actually witnessed that healthy food is pricier than the unhealthy options. Needless to say, 82% of the people answered with 'yes' while only 18% said 'No.'

%82

says healthy food is expensive

%18

says healthy food is NOT expensive Nonetheless, it can be argued that there is a vast difference between the quality of the product. Still, this argument fails when taking into account that few people do prefer budget-friendly options.

As the study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition titled 'Does social class predict diet quality?' Suggests that in developed countries, more wellto-do and professional individuals manage to consume higher-quality diets, including more fruits and vegetables, fish and whole grains. On the contrary, socioeconomicallydisadvantaged individuals have reported diets that were nutrient-poor and energy-dense, replete with foods like pasta, potatoes, table sugar, fried food and processed meats. They are less likely to have food-purchasing habits that conform to the public health recommendations.

An unhealthy meal is less costly per day compared to a portion of healthy food.

The main question that arises is: Why do people sometimes prefer buying cheap alternatives rather than healthy options? According to a thorough analysis of 27 studies in 10 countries, it was discovered that an unhealthy meal is about $1.50 less costly per day compared to a portion of healthy food. If we take into account supporting a large family, it costs less to buy from the cheaper sections or purchase affordable premade options. The other reasons documented are that those who might have difficulty with cooking prefer easy microwavable meals over other options - which are considered less healthier and also much cheaper. Since the vast majority of people would be middle-class, this will result in choosing unhealthy alternatives over the others. This fact also leads to many complications and health issues such as obesity. However, can we still eat healthily on a budget? Here are some tips on how to do so if we take into account the present prices.

5 Tips to Eat Healthily on a Budget Plan Ahead - Make sure to plan your meals, and stick to a grocery list and stay away from processed food. Cook at Home - Although some might find it difficult to cook at home, whatever you manage to create at home will be much healthier than what you find outside. Don’t Shop when Hungry When you go shopping on a hungry stomach, you tend to buy more unhealthy food compared to when you go on a full stomach. Buy Wholefoods - For example, buying freshly sliced cheese might be cheaper than buying processed cheese. Shop for Produce That's in Season - Regional product in season is frequently more economical. It is also usually at its zenith in both nutrients and flavour.
