Winter
Issue

The Obsession with Dolls I recently revisited one of my childhood obsessions - Dolls (AKA Barbie dolls). Believe it or not, I started searching for them on Instagram until my explore feed became filled with Barbie pictures and doll-related accounts. But, so here's the thing; this obsession with dolls is not something new or unique to me. Barbie has been surrounded by popularity and enjoyed a longtime mania since its invention back in the '50s.
Ever since this inclusivity was implemented, there seems to be some attention being turned to dolls and puppets - including from big brands. We can even host a whole fashion show with dolls!
Hence, I decided to dedicate this issue especially for them, naming it "Pink Plastic." Now, I leave you to enjoy the different sections of this winter issue with event flashbacks, beauty, history, and a special feature of a Barbie photoshoot.

Over the years, Barbie has gone through many changes and developments to its face and body, but one fact remained the same throughout the years; everyone still loves her! Originally, we loved the signature blue-eyed, blonde-haired, and slim waist figure. Eventually, women saw it as their idol - putting high standards and unattainable beauty goals on themselves. Recognizing this impact, Barbie's designers decided to instill the idea of a positive body image and including different body types.

EVENTS FLASHBACK CALENDAR
2020 has been a really different year but so unforgettable with all its ups and downs, highs, and lows. One statement can say it all,'' What a year!'' Let's have a flashback to some of the coolest events of the last five months.

October Moschino's Puppet Show Jeremy Scott, the fashion designer at MOSCHINO, created a puppet fashion show for the coming Spring 2021 Collection.
The Great Airshow
During quarantine, Scott had foreseen it as 'unlikely' to put up a real runway show and bring the crowds in. An unconventional year calls for something different, and what's a better way to make it than using a few puppets. Scott did just that and put on a show with the collection that aimed to celebrate magic, whimsy, and fantasy.
Even though it was a tough COVID year, but the spirit of patriotism was remarkable. On Sep 21, two days before Saudi National Day, a fantastic airshow was displayed at the Jeddah waterfront, led by a giant aircraft.
1 Did YOU say October? As October commenced, YOU Newsletter X Together for a Cause joined forces to create a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign with hashtag #AFriendlyReminder. The theme was on the vitality of breast cancer awareness during the COVID19 pandemic. Furthermore, YOU made a 'Pink October Trivia' to test followers' knowledge about the disease while using the hashtag #PinkColorUnitesUs

The Great Conjunction of Saturn & Jupiter
On Monday, 21st of Dec, the world witnessed a rare conjunction between Saturn and Jupiter. On that day, the two planets were visible in the evening sky. It has been nearly 800 years since the last alignment happened, which makes the event a little extra special.
The exhibition was in partnership with Hafez Gallery, Tasami Lab, Noor Gallery , Al Mansouria Auction, and UBS Global Art, a long-term partner. This year, COVID topics and themes were really evident in the artists' works throughout the art fair.

1970s
My whole philosophy was that through the doll, a little girl could be anything she wanted to be. - Ruth Handler
Seeing her daughter play make-believe with paper dolls, Ruth was inspired to invent the plastic Barbie dolls we know today. She viewed her idea as an urgency for future girls to play with, just like her little kid.
2000s
The unrealistic Barbie body measurements - such as 18 inches waistline - generated some controversy. This, combined with many other factors contributed to women and young girls suffered from body image issues. Thus, Mattel Company has decided to incorporate all types of bodies, skin colors, and races. Barbie had different editions and careers to appeal to a broader audience.
1990s
The first Barbie version ever made was based on the German comic model named Lilli. This first version took off as soon as it saw the light; selling millions. Later, other models were made to represent celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. Barbie versions continue to evolve throughout the years, changing facial features, and keeping up with the latest fashion trends.
1980s
The legendary doll known as 'Barbie' was created on March 9, 1959, by Ruth Handler, an American inventor, businesswoman and co-founder of Mattel., Inc. Barbie was first debuted at the International Toy Fair in New York City.
