he University of the West of England’s (UWE) Students’ Union President Charlie Roper said he was excited by plans to build a ‘campus for the 21st century’ at Frenchay. The ‘UWE Campus Masterplan’ which outlines proposed new developments to the university’s flagship campus on Coldharbour Lane, Frenchay, has unanimously been given the go ahead by South Gloucestershire Council. Mr Roper said: “I am delighted, it will build a sense of community on campus”. Plans show multiple illustrations of how the new campus will look following completion in 2015 as well as a full outlining of the expansion plans. a redevelopment of all university facilities, including car parking, academic space refurbishment, refectory relocation, transport and a new Students’ Union building, as well as the building of the new UWE Stadium in partnership withBristol Rovers. Work has already begun on a new Students’ Union building for social and leisure activities that is scheduled for completion in 2014. UWE say that the plans intend to ‘

make the most’ of the land that they acquired from HewlettPackard back in 2008 and that the new developments will ‘transform the way the university works, providing a modern environment which will support students in their learning journey’. UWE’s expansion plan states that the university intend on eventually bringing all of the university’s activities and teaching onto the redeveloped campus leading

to St Matthias and Glenside campuses becoming redundant on the completion of the project. However the university currently plan to retain the Bower Ashton Campus following a multi-million pound redevelopment of their newsroom facilities for journalism students. Once the entire redevelopment plan has been completed there will be an additional 1,200 student bedrooms across the site in order to meet its aim of allowing all first year students accommodation on site. UWE are currently unable to house the 25,000 full time students on site, with a current waiting list of 700 students. The expansion of the student accommodation has been scheduled for 3 phases of 400 additional bed spaces per phase, with the first phase of development already underway. v i s t w w w. u w e . a c . u k

s the nights are drawing in; next summer may seem light-years away but festival tickets for next year are already on sale, many at their cheapest first tier prices. You’ve done Glastonbury, ticked off Reading but what’s next? Look no further than the crystal clear Adriatic Sea for your next festival location. Croatia has become Europe’s next biggest party destination, combining the sun of Ibiza with the vibes of Bestival. Festivals such as Outlook, Hideout, Dimensions and Unknown have captured the party souls of the English. For everyone who says, “The festival would have been the best weekend of my life if it hadn’t been for the weather” here is the answer! The majority of the festivals take place along the Adriatic Coast around Pula. The easiest way to get to the festivals is a flight to Zagreb, Venice or Ljubljana and an airport transfer. Flight prices vary massively depending on who you fly with and when you book them; they can be anything between £80 and £200. Festival tickets themselves are pretty cheap considering you get five days of music; Outlook was £135 last year and the others were around the same price or less. Global Gathering tickets last year were £121 for the two night festival. Therefore adding everything up, it generally works out cheaper than even a holiday in spain. Not mentioning the vibes and the experience of jumping round to your favourite DJs on the beach is priceless. One more thing to consider is traveling Croatia’s beautful country before ending up a festival. Many students and youngsters take the popular coach travel routes around Croatia, ending their trip at a festival! Therefore, you can travel, have a holiday with your friends and go to a festival all in one go this summer.

Top five winter warmers

hether you like it or not, November means the official start to the winter season. The days of bringing a fan to bed have gone and, as if on cue we welcome November, dark nights and winter indulging. For those not quite ready to pull out their thick coats just yet, here are some essentials to ease you into the winter weather. Gloves Our pick: Touch screen friendly textured gloves will be a must this winter so you can update your twitter on how cold it is… ‘can’t afford the heating #studentlife’. Ye p @ U n i p a p e rB r i s t o l c a n ’ t w a i t to read the obvious.

Touch Screen Gloves – £8 -River Island Boots Perfect for rain, snow or any other kind of weather we can expect in the next few months. Our pick: Chelsea boots have been

on trend for the whole year so it makes sense to trade in your thick heeled pair for a rain-friendly option. This stylish alternative to the classic wellie will almost make you glad to see rain outside for an excuse to put them on.

from the standard metallic style we’re accustomed to. Insulated Ceramic Cup Ebay £4.99

Black High Shine Chelsea Boot Wellie River Island £20

Flasks and early morning lectures go hand in hand. Our Pick: With a variety of styles and designs, these reusable cups can make a fashion statement as much as any other item featured on this list. With the same purpose as a thermos flask, the range of ceramic cups makes a nice change

Hats Didn’t your parents tell you we lose heat from our heads? Well we don’t want that nagging to go to waste. Our Pick: Hats simply aren’t for everyone so a stylish but equally warm alternative, is this turban style headband. The thickness around the back of the head provides the same warmth a hat would whilst the bow shaped front adds a cute quirk. This is a definate must buy this winter.

Tu r b a n H e a d b a n d - A s o s £ 8 Onesie For some, a creepy throwback to infanthood but to others this list of winter warmers would be incomplete without the mention of onesies’. Our Pick: Pricey, but so fun, the furry belly is a definite plus. Many more cheap alternatives on the high street.

out pennies for extras that you d i d n’ t e v e n k n o w a b o u t . How much have you spent this year on course materials? Have y o u h a d t o d i g d e e p fo r t e x t b o o k s that you barely even use or buy lab coats, art materials or other essentials you need in order to study? The President of UWE S t u d e n t s ’ U n i o n , C h a rlie R o p e r, has recently introduced a campaign to identify stud e n t ’s hidden costs.

He hopes that the campaign will lead to full transparency of additional course costs prior to application on courses at the University and may lead towards absorption of essent i a l c o s t s w i t h i n t h e t u i t i o n fe e . Charlie says: “Costs range from u n i fo r m s , f i e l d t r i p s , p r i n t i n g a n d materials. Whether it is any of these or others, students are still

facing significant hidden costs attached to studying their degree. It is simply not fair or acceptable that academic success is dictated by how much disposable cash you have.” He can be tweeted at @TheSUPresident, display your costs using #UWERealCost. By putting pressure on students it runs the risk of them perhaps sacrificing study time to work more hours in order to purchase these essentials, or worst case scenario may lead to them dropping out. Hopefully Charlie will uncover exactly what extras we are payi n g fo r a n d w o r k t o i n c o r p o r a t e t h e m i n t o t h e fe e s w e a l r e a d y p a y ! Ten top tips when viewing your new student property by Dean Prosser

fter speaking to many letting and estate agents here is my 10 top tips of advice for when you look for your new home. 1. Think about what you need a n d w h a t y o u w a n t i n a p r o p e r t y. M a ke a l i s t t o g o i n w i t h . 2. Understand the terms ‘Joint & Several Liability’ and ‘Fixed Te r m’. In most cases landlords and agents will ask everyone in the house to sign one tenancy agreement. This usually means that should one person not pay their

rent, technically everyone else c o u l d b e a s ke d t o p a y i t fo r t h e m . A fixed term is the date and length of your tenancy – you are all legally b o u n d t o p a y t h e r e n t fo r t h e f i x e d term of the tenancy agreement. Be aware most letting agents will ask you to begin paying rent in July e v e n t h o u g h y o u a r e n’t b a c k u n t i l September. 3 . Ta l k t o t h e e x i s t i n g t e n a n t s about the house. When looking around houses why not talk to the existing tenants as they’ve got t h e k n o w l e d g e o n w h a t i t ’s l i ke t o live there. Ask what the landlord / a g e n t i s l i ke , a n d i f t h e r e a r e a n y on-going problems that you should be aware of? 4 . D o n’t r u s h y o u r d e c i s i o n o r be manipulated into making a decision on the property you are goi n g t o t a ke . 5. Read your tenancy agreement and ask which deposit protection scheme your landlord / agent will be using to protect your bond. E v e r y o n e d o e s i t , w h e t h e r i t ’s a computer programme or the bottom of a new video game, the legal

mumbo jumbo gets ignored and we s c r o l l t o t h e e n d a n d w e ‘a g r e e’. I t ’s the same with renting a new place, who reads the tenancy agreement a n y w a y ? T h e s m a r t p e o p l e , t h a t ’s who! If your contract is an assured short hold tenancy your deposit must be protected in one of three government registered schemes. Yo u l a n d l o r d / a g e n t m u s t p r o v i d e y o u w i l l t h i s i n fo r m a t i o n p r i o r t o signing the tenancy agreement. 6. Check everything works. T h i s g o e s fo r T Vs , f r i d g e s a n d a l s o the plugs that you put all your electrical gadgets into. My top tip is to bring something along to plug in to test it. Who cares if the guy s h o w i n g y o u r o u n d t h i n k s y o u ’r e c r a z y, i t ’s f a r b e t t e r t o k n o w t h e plugs work! 7. Check the shower/toilet/radiators. The toilet: Give it a flush to check it works. Plumbing problems are the absolute worst. Check the shower: Just ask if you can flick it on. Check it gets h o t a n d r e m a i n s h o t fo r m o r e t h a n five seconds. If there is gas in the p r o p e r t y : M a ke s u r e y o u are provided with a Landl o r d G a s S a fe t y C e r t i f icate – this is a legal requirement and must b e r e n e w e d a n n u a l l y. 8. Check the windows. When viewing each room, especially the bedrooms, walk right up to the w i n d o w a n d s e e i f y o u c a n fe e l a draft! Check the seal on the windows to see if they are double glazed and secure. This not only m e a n s t h e y ’r e g o o d w i n d o w s , t h e y w i l l a l s o ke e p y o u r h e a t i n g c o s t s d o w n , m e a n i n g m o r e m o n e y fo r a l cohol and Apple products (because w e a l l k n o w t h a t ’s w h a t s t u d e n t l o a n s a r e fo r ) . 9.
