pay for more than 55,000 jobs in 2023, but it has to be given the all clear from the Government before any money can be put in.

With more and more students choosing to study in Nottingham, there is an ever increasing demand for jobs.

Train commuters to be hit by price increase in 2014

ommuters and students C who travel from nearby East Midlands cities and also Birmingham and London, will suffer a price increase in season tickets in the New Year.

Season tickets from Nottingham to London are already £8,500 but will rise to nearly £9,000, an increase of more than 3 per cent.

Tickets will also rise a significant amount for those of you who travel from the West Midlands, from £3,500 to £3,720 - a 3.56 per cent rise.

If prices continue to rise, is there a chance of mature students choosing not to come to study in

Nottingham?

Undergraduates are more likely to stay in the city, but for those doing post graduate or part time courses, will it be an affordable way to study on the course they have picked.

But with the new improved Nottingham Station costing millions, is it a necessary price hike that will just be pushed aside by commuters because they think it’s worth the money?

It is certainly a debatable question, should students be forced to pay more for a journey that is not 100% reliable all of the time? Only time will tell whether this development is for the better or worse.

Job hope for future University Graduates

here are just no jobs for T students around, the result being that they go back to a

job that is not in the field they studied.

However, with the new plan being put together by the company D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, to help create the jobs for the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire areas, in 10 years’ time there will be a greater chance of graduates getting a full time job in the industry they have worked to be in.

Government cash would be combined with money from the county’s public and private sectors and 250 million Euros has already been given to D2N2 by the European Union.

D2N2 chief executive David Ralph said, “From manufacturing to

the visitor economy, we must bring out what is distinctive about D2N2, demonstrate our competitive advantage and showcase exactly why this is the UK’s most inspirational postcode.”

The final submission of the programme has to be made by 31st March 2014, following feedback from Whitehall.

Pumping new BMX track opened

fter two years of waiting, the A new BMX Pump Track has finally opened at the Broxtowe

Country Park. The track, which was designed by the young people who will be using it, opened on 6th December.

The opening included a speech from a former Number 1 British Champion Tony Fleming. As well as this there was a bike and scooter give away, BMX trick performances and a fireworks display.

The idea for the track came from a group of young citizens who approached the council with the idea. Following this, they have been involved with every part of the design and construction of the park. Councillor Graham Chapman, the portfolio holder for resources and neighbourhood regeneration, hopes that by involving the community, “they will own it and respect it”. He also suggests that this new park will promote healthy lifestyles and will give young people something to do.

The once Landfill area has been transformed into a 55m x 35m track which also includes a small scooter track as well. The £132,000 project is part of the regeneration of the park. A large part of the money invested into the project was used on specialist designs to make it a safe environment. As well as the new BMX Pump Track, other new enhancements to Broxtowe Country Park include new cycle and pedestrian routes, extra lighting and landscaping.

The new track was designed for all ages and abilities. It also has a 50cm high steel knee rail to deter motorbikes and help protect the track from anti-social behaviour.

The Entrepreneur:

42-year-old entrepreneur Elon Musk is the man who invented the well-established and trusted online payment system, PayPal. He showed great potential from the age of 12, as he taught himself computer programming, selling a computer code for a video game called Blastar for $500.

In March 1999, Musk co-founded X.com an online financial service and e-mail payment company, which later merged with another company to form a subsidiary called PayPal. Musk favoured the original X.com brand, resulting in his removal as CEO of the board. In 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock, of which $165 million was given to Musk.

Currently Musk is CEO and CTO of Space X, which is his third company. SpaceX develops and manufactures space launch vehicles with a focus on advancing the state of rocket technology.

He is also Chief Product Architect of Tesla Motors, which built the first electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, which is sold in 31 different countries. Tesla motors recently unveiled its third product, the Model X, aimed at the SUV/minivan market, in February 2012. It is scheduled to begin production this year.

Musk is very different to a lot of entrepreneurs as he tries to create new technological advances, often taking huge risks and controversy within companies to do so. In 2010, he was listed as one of Time Magazine’s 100 people who affected the world most. People are calling Musk the next Steve Jobs, and it is likely we will see a lot more from him in years to come.

Visit European countries on a budget in 2014

e are at a time in our W lives when we should be exploring the world; seeing all

that’s out there and making the most of it while we still have the time and freedom to do so.

However, for all the joys that come along with the unmissable experience of the student life, we are left with one rather frustrating problem - we have no money!

Fortunately, there are ways round this and it IS possible to visit some of the brilliant cities the world has to offer on a budget.

If you’re looking to visit Paris, Barcelona, Milan or any other major European city, I can tell you from personal experience that interrailing is the best option.

If it’s just one city you’re planning on going to - maybe a romantic weekend in Paris with your other half or a relaxing break in Amsterdam with your mates -

then the coach is undoubtedly the cheapest option. But if you want to see as much as you can in less than 2 weeks, go interrailing!

Preferably with a few mates, but possibly still interesting on your own, for just £161 you are provided with a ticket that will give you unlimited free rides on trains and ships around Europe for 10 days. And for all its cheapness, the coach can be quite an ordeal if you are travelling far; train is definitely the less timeconsuming option.

Winter: Sale shopping survival guide What not to wear I

t’s that time of year again. No, I’m not talking about the festive period being over or an impending snow arrival. What I am talking about is summed up in one word.

One word so sacred to the female ear

that when said it is as if sung by a choir of tiny designer angels sent from the fashion god.

SALES! Having worked in retail, I swore I would never step foot in a shop on Boxing Day but if you are one of the brave ones with the guts to do so, I commend you.

Here are a couple of tips for those of you gearing up for the mission.

The most sensible suggestion would be to go laden with shin pads,

helmets and solid army gear but it is understandable that those of you devout enough to do Boxing Day sales are those of you concerned about style and appearance… therefore maybe DON’T do that.

A valuable piece of advice though would be to wear an outfit easy to whip off and on, some sensible shoes, a ‘small-ish’ bag, and a fierce attitude ready to fight to the death for that last pair of 50% off suede booties.

Most high street sales will have already started on Boxing Day, but some stores will be waiting for the New Year so keep an eye out for the fresher sales to get your hands on the best bargain.

Happy shopping…and good luck, some shoppers out there are crazy. Be warned.

n late November the gaming industry celebrated the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. Both machines had made headlines for months leading up to their respective releases, but as launch day drew closer it was clear that this was going to be a big deal.

The sales figures for both machines were hotly analysed with the hope of revealing which was the most popular amongst consumers, however when the results came back it was apparent that both had made an incredible impact despite one coming out ever so slightly on top.

The PlayStation 4 had succeeded in having the biggest console launch in history, selling over 2.1 million units within the first two weeks of its launch. The Xbox One followed closely behind selling 100,000 less units than the PlayStation 4.

Do’s and don’ts of cooking safely

hen it comes to cooking, freezing and reheating food, there are certain rules to follow to help ensure you don’t get food poisoning.

Of course we all know that meat has to be cooked thoroughly before we eat it, except for a nice juicy beef steak. But what’s the rule for freezing and reheating the left overs?

Well, meat is okay to be re-frozen after being cooked and left to cool. However do not refreeze raw meat or put cooked meat in the freezer straight after coming out of the oven.

Meat can then be reheated thoroughly after being allowed to defrost either in the microwave or fridge and eaten within 24 hours. This can only be done once, any left overs this time no matter how low

your bank balance is looking, is to be thrown away, because the more times you cool and reheat food, the higher the risk you have of getting food poisoning. This is because bacteria can grow and multiply when food is cooled too slowly, and might survive if food isn’t reheated properly.

Other tips: - Ice cream should not be refrozen so don’t eat out of the tub!

- Do not re-use a freezer bag for raw meats for ready meals.

- The longer you leave rice at room temperature the more likely you will get food poisoning from toxins the rice bacterium carries.

And do not reheat it more than once and keep in the fridge for no longer than a day.

The cosmopolitan is a classic cocktail that everyone loves, so here’s a festive twist on the original.

Cocktail equipment can be found on the following sites:

Ingredients: • 500ml vodka • 500ml ginger wine • 1litre cranberry juice • juice 5 limes, keep zest for garnish • sliced stem ginger.

Method: This cocktail has very few ingredients and is extremely easy to make. Mix the vodka and ginger wine in a jug. Stir in the cranberry juice, lime juice and some sliced stem ginger.

Serves 10.

Mulled Pear and Cranberry Punch: This recipe serves 8-10 depending on how greedy your guests are.

Ingredients: • 1litre pear cider • 1litre pear (or cloudy apple) juice • 1litre cranberry juice • good handful of fresh or dried cranberries • 150ml sloe gin • 2 cinnamon sticks • 2 vanilla pods, scored lengthways.

Method: Put all the ingredients into a saucepan. When you’re ready to heat to just below simmering then ladle into glasses.

Peppermint Hot Chocolate: If the merry season has taken a toll on your liver, then why not opt for a hot chocolate.

Ingredients: • 200g bar plain chocolate, broken into chunks • 600ml milk • 150ml pot single cream • sugar, to taste • 6 peppermint candy canes, to serve.

Method: Put the chocolate in a pan with the milk. Gently heat, stirring until all the chocolate has melted. Continue heating until the milk is steaming, then remove from the heat and stir in the cream. Divide the hot chocolate between 6 mugs, add sugar to taste and hang a candy cane on the edge of each.

Stir your hot chocolate with the candy cane for the peppermint flavour.

Winter Warmer

his is a recipe for those lazy winter evenings and is one of my favourites. Imagine yourself wrapped up on the sofa with a blanket watching a cheesy romcom. Nothing compliments that better than a bowl of this warm brownie cake and cream.

This recipe can be done in under an hour and is pretty much fool proof. The best thing about it is that it doubles up as a great desert to impress guests and a fantastic winter heart warmer. Sporting events - Term two

erm one is out of the way and T many of our sporting teams have enjoyed a great start to their BUCS campaign. However, with term two starting that can only mean one thing, Varsity!

Yes that’s right! The Charity Varsity series is back at the start of February with the Trent sports teams looking to continue their good runs and win back the title of champions. After two straight years of defeat, the Trent boys and girls will be looking to recapture the good old years of 2010-11.

Looking at some of the results last year and the five points that Trent gained included wins in American football, rugby league, men’s and women’s football as well as men’s cricket. Those victorious teams will be hoping to retain those points going into this year’s

series whilst some of the teams on the end of losses last year will be looking to contribute this time around.

Men’s basketball and hockey alongside ice hockey will be looking to relive the memories of the 2012 where they all contributed to a point’s tally of seven. Elsewhere women’s rugby, one of the most prolific teams in the first term and reviewed in this paper over the past couple of months, will look to finally get one over on their city rivals.

Whatever the results, the series is bound to live up to those of past years with the score likely to come down to some influential individual performances.

Expect to see us return to the one and only Varsity Basketball Half Time show in February, as well as several other Varsity appearances we have potentially lined up in the pipeline.

Term two also hosts our competition season, and this year we are totting up our travel miles, entering categories at University competitions in Liverpool, Loughborough and Sunderland. What are you paying for in your student house?

Other than being wary of how to deal with a moody landlord, or proofing your house from the neighbourhood burglar, one of the most important things to budget for and calculate is your household bills. You need to consider how much water, gas and electricity you will use if it isn’t already included in your rent.

Depending on how many there are of you in the house, the more people, the higher your bills are going to be obviously, but you can also reduce costs through the usual money saving tricks. On average a two bedroom flat would use between £30 - £70 per month on energy bills and water. Another option is using a company such as GLIDE, they sort all your bills out leaving you to pay just them. This usually works out slightly more expensive but has its advantages.

This is the only piece of advice to save money on bills I can give you, as you can’t know how much you will use however your estate agent or landlord will be able to give you an accurate figure. Good luck with the budgeting and house hunting!

Third years guide to house hunting

plenty of time, and you don’t have to panic.

DO take the time to shop around. It’s a good idea to look into letting agents as well as private landlords to find the best deal.

DON’T worry about location.

Sometimes some of the best

houses are a little bit further away from campus and nearer to larger facilities, like supermarkets. Don’t be afraid of the extra walk, because you may end up paying less in rent.

DO look for somewhere with bills included. Might seem like nothing now, but when you’re having to calculate bills between you every term, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t just go for the easier option!

DON’T forget to get your

contract checked by the students union. It may seem like extra work, but they can advise you on parts of the agreement that don’t look right, or about any unnecessary costs, and who doesn’t like saving a bit of money?

DO choose wisely. If you’re heading into your third year, chose your neighbourhood wisely. Living near campus can be noisy and distracting so it could be a good idea to look a little further afield.

What to look for in a housing contract

So here are some things you should be looking for in a housing contract: Don’t rush into signing the contract - although they can be boring they really are crucial to read - you may discover something you did not know about the property.

Check for extra costs - landlords can be cheeky sometimes by not telling you additional booking fees or charges over summer etc.

Check the inventory does it include everything you thought it did?

Check the payments are the same as what you discussed - student housing can often work payment methods out differently so it seems like you are paying more money a week, ask them to show you how they work payments out.

Don’t forget to ask questions - the landlord isn’t there to trick you so anything you don’t understand just ask them to explain it.

Keep a copy of the contract – this comes in handy when you need to refer back to something.

If you are still unsure on your housing contract then the student advice centre situated in the Student Union building can read through and check the legal requirements.

DON’T just go for the first house you see. While you may be in a panic to find a place for next year, especially if all your friends have already signed on what sounds like an amazing house, going for the first house you view could lead to you not really considering all the main points. And you could end up in a house you don’t actually like, so shop around.

If you’re looking for affordable housing then you can’t go wrong with homes in Radford and Lenton. The areas aren’t known for being the

most sophisticated in Nottingham, but they are convenient if you’re on a tight student budget as prices start at around £50 per week for a five bedroom house.

However, if you have a bit more cash to spend, you have a variety of options in the City Centre. Perfect for outgoing and partying students, not only are the properties opulent, but they are also within throwing distance of the university and most clubs.

has to offer. But the rooms are all different sizes, just how will you choose? Here are a few ideas to make choosing rooms less of a chore: Forget pulling names out of a hat; why not hold your own mini Olympics. Boil some eggs and hold an egg and spoon race up and down your street. See who can eat the most cream crackers in a minute

or get some old pillow cases and have a sack race. All the sports day classics and whoever has most points at the end of the games gets first pick of the rooms, simple.

If sports aren’t your thing why not write a list of miscellaneous items and create a scavenger hunt around Nottingham. You and your future house mates will be chasing around the city searching for a polka dot bow tie, a lock of ginger hair and many more crazy things. The first person back to the house gets first choice, second gets second and so on, until all the

rooms are all taken.

And thirdly why not leave it to the luck of the draw. Why not create a room choosing pass the parcel? For this one you’ll need an

independent adjudicator as no one wants to be accused of fixing it.

Number all of the rooms and then in each layer put a number, put on your favourite party track and then leave it down to fate!
