For Kuwait

W

hat does Kuwait mean to you? Is it a country? Or is it home? Have you ever considered the difference between the following terms? What makes you miss this country? What makes you come back? What makes you work for it? So many questions rise when we talk about Kuwait. In my cause I’m willing to risk my life for the country that had given me so much. The more I work and give the more I believe I’m taking from it in return. The question that pops up in my mind is what does Kuwait really want from its citizens? Kuwait wants or needs so much from us; after all it’s in our hands to make the change. Kuwait needs to develop, not necessary a fast development yet a good development that comes from the heart of reliable Kuwaitis. We all have different majors, talents, skills and experiences if we add all of those together we can create something big, something that could improve Kuwait in all the ways possible. Didn’t you notice the fall of Kuwait recently or maybe it’s because we compare it to the surrounding Arab countries that are rapidly growing. Why can’t Kuwait be like that? The reason behind it is us! We are used to things being done for us; we are forgetting the hard work that our ancestors went through. Countries are built by bricks of hard work, eagerness, passion, and a clear goal that motivates everyone to work. The goal as we agreed earlier is Kuwait’s benefit. We can narrow down the goal by dividing it in smaller goals and assigning certain groups to achieve each goal. The following is an example of cooperation in a country and that’s exactly what we need in Kuwait; cooperation with one another.

Life is a Game !!

P

eople love to play games, different types of games. Life as a whole represent a game that leads you finally to heaven if you win or hell if you loose.

Popular games of today are the computer games, play station games, Nintendo, PSP, DS... you name it, every kind of electronic game. People spend a lot of their valuable time and money on these games. And even if you don’t play and spend all your hours of the day working, you are playing a game in which you take the role of the workaholic. All of us are playing roles in life; someone is playing the role of a doctor, someone is playing the school teacher role, or the preacher, or the carpenter, or the engineer, or the politician, or the king or the queen, endless roles and characters. Some play games within games. Those who are not content with the characters they choose to play, choose another path to play different kind of games, like working as an actor or a comedienne. Also individuals play more than one kind of a game; like a mother and an employee for example, or a fireman and a father. Also there are more dangerous games like war games, or Dictatorship games like the ones played by Hitler or Saddam, or social complex relationship games. Face book is a fantasy world in which people play all kind of games. People can appear playing the same role they are playing in their lives if they like that role, or they can acquire a different character and may be with a different name. They can choose to play a noble role or a totally obscene character, especially that this plain of living is not governed by rules or regulations, or right or wrong, so people can play a vast variety of games, that only them themselves have the hold on. One might get lost in the role he’s or she’s playing, unless you set a time a day to practice stillness and observe the self. This is practiced by meditation and soul searching. So dear reader have you ever thought, what kind of games are you playing? What do you think the roles you’re presenting? How many roles do you think you are acquiring? Are you playing dramatic roles in your life, like the role of the victim or the role of the villain? And what are you doing to counteract that role playing and getting to know your true self? 48

We don’t look backward, we keep moving forward, opening up new doors and discovering new things

E

veryone in this world faces many problems, and they might do not know how to get out of it. And to be honest I faced a lot of problems in my life and I still do but when you think of the reason of the problem, you find it stupid and then you regret what you have done. Sometimes all of us feel bad for no reason, and sometimes we feel that we are always alone, by ourselves and nobody is around. Also we might hate our life and feel bored and that’s all because we think in a negative way.

You might say how are positive thoughts or negative thoughts have something to do with this? Well many studies proved that negative thoughts always has negative results, and these negative thoughts effect our life in many ways first of them the way we feel about life , they way we look and our behaviour. Moreover, these studies proved that once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results. Steps for a Positive Thinking 1- Think of what you want not what you don’t want. 2- Feel good about everything you do (the more you feel good the more good things will happen). 3- If you start your day with negative thoughts, it will affect your whole day and have a bad day. In addition, if you start your day with positive thoughts you will have a good day. 4- Always thank god for what you have. 5- Have a goal and a vision and try to achieve it. 6- Decide what you want to be (lawyer – doctor – etc...) And Believe that you can be that person and you deserve it, believe it’s

possible for you, and think that you already that person and feel the joy of being this person. 7- If you want something no matter how hard is it to get, believe that you deserve it and you can have it. 8- Always ask god for what you want and be grateful for the things that you have. 9- You have to trust on yourself in everything you do in your life. And you shouldn’t be ashamed of it. 10- If you think of something in a negative way, it will just happen in the way you think of it, but if you think of it in a positive way, it will just happen in a good way just as you were thinking. Always put in mind that “Every challenge set before us is another experience to mature at the heart and become more determined to reach even better heights. And every goal imaginable is achievable!” Also everyone should always remind himself to listen to his “internal dialogue” because it will help you recognize your thought patterns and how they may be affecting the way you handle the stressful situations of daily living.

Positive thinking is the answer for all the problems we face in this life

Positive Thinking

It’s not too late you still have a chance to change, relax think of what you have done is right or wrong? Stop thinking in a negative way be a positive person, keep the smile on your face, don’t lose hope, believe that you deserve a better life, Find the good thing in every situation, take time to look around and smell the roses, see the dew on the grass, hear the birds sing and when it rains look for the rainbow!! So cheers to being positive look forward and move on!

The Floating MacBook Air

A

pple. Introduces the world’s thinnest notebook, The MacBook Air. MacBook Air is ultrathin, ultraportable, and ultra unlike anything else. But you don’t lose inches and pounds overnight. It’s the result of rethinking conventions. Of multiple wireless innovations. And of breakthrough design. With MacBook Air, mobile computing suddenly has a new standard.

The Design What makes the MacBook Air so impressive its thinness! It is a full size notebook encased in the 0.16 to 0.76 inch of sleek, sturdy anodized aluminum. And MacBook is 3.0 pounds which makes MacBook your partner everywhere you go.

Full-size Keyboard The keyboard is full-size with crisp keys just like the ones on MacBook. But MacBook Air goes further by adding backlit key illumination, making it easy to work in low-light settings such as airplanes and conference halls. A built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts keyboard and display brightness for optimal visibility. And with the oversize multitouch trackpad, it just keeps getting better for fingers. The Multi-Touch TrackPad MacBook Air includes an oversize trackpad with multi-touch technology. You can pinch, swipe, or rotate to zoom in on text, advance through a photo album, or adjust an image. This gesture-based input so successful on iPhone and iPod touch now comes to MacBook.

A 13.3 inch no-compromise display The glossy 13.3-inch, widescreen LED backlit MacBook Air display is the same viewable size as the screen on MacBook. The 1280x800 resolution gives you vibrant images and rich colors at full brightness the moment you open MacBook Air. So you get full-screen performance with all the benefits of a slim design. So Thin Yet So Expansive MacBook Air comes with generous 2GB of RAM built in — ample memory for working with your favorite applications. The 80GB hard drive provides plenty of storage space. And you have the option to upgrade to a 64GB solid-state drive, which has no moving parts for enhanced durability. Micro Chip Processor MacBook Air performance is as impressive as its form, it has 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The chip was custom-built to fit within the compact dimensions of MacBook Air. 62

No Optical-Drive! Why? Where ever you look in MacBook the only thing it’s missing is the Optical Drives, if you want one you can have The MacBook SuperDrive which is powered by the USB port in the MacBook. But maybe you will not miss the optical drive. So what do we normally do with the optical drive?

Play Movies You can watch movies on your MacBook Air by renting them from iTunes Store. You could select either library titles or new released titles in standard-definition or HD from many famous studios like 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Walt Disney, Sony Pictures and many more.

Make Backups Wirelessly with Time Capsule For the backups you got Time Capsule which is a revolutionary backup device that works wirelessly with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard. It automatically backs up everything, with 500GB or 1TB for space you no longer have to worry about losing your digital life and it also acts as a Wi-Fi base station.

Install Software using Remote Disc. What about Installing Software? How can we install software without a CD. Well you can install them wirelessly with Remote Disc. With Remote Disc. you wirelessly use or “borrow” the optical drive of a Mac or PC in the area. So you can have full access to an optical drive without having to haul one around.

No need for Music CDs when we have the iPod Burning Music CDs? Who does burn CDs these days when we have the iPod as our Music CD and an Online Music Store that opens 24/7 where you can shop anytime and anywhere to choose from a large collection of songs and albums.

Other Features in MacBook The MacBook comes with built-in iSight which will make video chatting easy. Also MacBook has a slim but powerful battery which lets you connect to the web wirelessly up to 5 fours. For wireless, MacBook Air is the notebook that allows for a fully wireless lifestyle. It all starts with the fastest-available, next-generation 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR built in. and it has the most advanced OS which is Mac OS X Leopard with iLife.

Men’s Wardrobe Essentials

E

very successful man has a perfect wardrobe to dazzles. So to be able to look good and dazzle make sure that you have these essentials in your wardrobe . You can add or mix trendy pieces with these essentials to be more up to date and fashionable. Remember these are the base of your look so make sure that you buy any of these pieces if you don't have theme.

Men's Wardrobe Essentials 1. A deshdasha (navy or gray + white for summer) - Even if you only need a deshdasha few times a year, you’re glad to have it on hand when those occasions arise. 2. Black shoes and belt - These can be worn with khakis, jeans and your suit. This is an essential combo. Before buying brown, get black. I think you will find you get more mileage out of them, especially when attending more formal or evening functions. 3. White dress shirt (good for day and night occasions) - White dress shirts look good on just about everybody. They look sharp and are versatile but should not to be worn as a casual shirt. 4. Athletic foot wear - a good shoes can be worn in the gym or when you are going out with jeans or training suit. 5. Blue blazer - A blue blazer is good for all year round and easily coordinates with khakis and other items. If that bores you, try a tweed sport coat but also keep in mind that tweed is really only useful in fall and winter. Either way a blazer or tweed sport coat holds a look together.

64

6. Khakis and jeans - No explanation necessary here. Jeans are a staple of the American wardrobe. Khakis are the same. 7. Overcoat - An overcoat doesn’t necessarily mean a long coat. It also means 3/4-length or car coat length. This item really finishes an outfit and can be worn with everything including jeans. And everyone needs a coat in winter, right? Well, maybe not if you live in places like Phoenix or San Diego. 8. Briefcase - A briefcase does not necessarily mean a hard case. It can be soft, or messenger bag style. In a man is has to carry files and other documents, this is an essential. 9. Athletic wear - Even for non-athletic types, athletic wear is great for those lazy Sundays and dashes to the convenience store at wee hours of the morning. 10. Casual shirt - A casual shirt such as a polo or button down is a must have to wear with jeans or other casual pants. 11. Deconstructed suit - A deconstructed suit is great because it has a relaxed look but is pulled together. Also, the pants and blazer can be worn separately)

BMW

BMW X6

B

MW will once again introduce a ground-breaking idea to the world and the creation of a new segment with the debut of its all-new X6 Sports Activity Coupe at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January. The all-new vehicle redefines the very notion of a coupe -- with five doors and four sculpted seats, a higher ride and loads of cargo space. It defies coupe conventions in one jaw-dropping look, combining coupe agility and SAV versatility, taking the coupe to a higher level.

The BMW X6 comes as standard with BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with electronic control for variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles, consistently adjusted to driving conditions at all times and in all situations.

As the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW X6 will be available in two engine variants: the xDrive50i (4.4 V8 engine, 400 hp, 450lb.-ft torque) and the xDrive35i (3.0 inline six-cylinder engine, 300 hp, 300 lb.-ft torque), both with Twin Turbo and direct injection. The BMW X6 offers unique features and performance ability in a combination unmatched by any other vehicle. The new BMW X6’s design combines the sporting elegance of a large BMW Coupe with the powerful presence of a BMW X model.

Featured for the first time as standard in the BMW X6, Dynamic Performance Control likewise ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear wheels. Dynamic Performance Control incorporates an advanced computer control and an innovative rear differential incorporating two planetary gearsets and two clutch packs that enables the system to multiply torque on an individual rear wheel. The result is that Dynamic Performance Control can help steer the vehicle by directing torque to either of the rear wheels.

66

Unique the world over, this cutting-edge technology is effective whether the driver is accelerating or decelerating and significantly enhances steering precision and, as a result, the agility of the vehicle at any speed. In fast corners with abrupt steering maneuvers or with the driver suddenly releasing the gas pedal, Dynamic Performance Control serves to improve the stability of the entire vehicle, thus allowing the driver to safely enter and enjoy new dimensions of driving dynamics. Finally, on slippery or uneven surfaces, Dynamic Performance Control provides the further advantage of even safer and more stable traction. The new V8 engine with Twin Turbo technology and direct gasoline injection, is likewise making its world debut in the BMW X6. Displacing 4.4 liters, this eight-cylinder with maximum engine output of 400 hp and peak torque of 450 lb-ft available over an unusually large range of engine speed from 1,800-4,500 rpm, is the most powerful engine ever seen in a BMW X Model. The new eight-cylinder is indeed truly impressive not only through its outstanding thrust and pulling force, but also through its compact dimensions. For this is the first eight-cylinder gasoline engine in the world to feature its turbocharger in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders. Hence, the BMW Sports Activity Coupe is an absolutely exceptional vehicle also beyond the direct range of BMW X Model competitors, ensuring unparalleled performance in all situations, regardless of road and surface conditions.

adies if you think that this article will talk about the new brands of high heels, then you are at the wrong place. This article will simply talk about how can high heels affect your lower back and causes it to feel pain, and also how can you ease the pain.

First of all, before going into what causes pain and how to treat it...Etc, did you ask yourself or even thought of how do you walk? of course you already know how to walk from the age of 2, but did you think about the mechanics? What moves next and what alters the movement? All the joints from your big toe to your low back are responsible and part of your walking cycle (which is known in medicine as Gait); it starts in heel strike on the ground and then your fore foot lands on the ground, then your leg bones rocks forward on your ankle with slight bending of your knees to act as normal shock absorbent, and then it ends with clearing off your fore foot from the ground with the help of your toes

H e e l s by pushing the ground with them, and with the help of the other joins that bends and flexes and the twisting of your pelvis you will have a complete walking cycle without you even know or think about it (this is a very simple and brief explanation of the walking cycle). All this happens simultaneously with precise coordination of the muscles and joints. But what happens when you Alter that mechanic a little bit? Such as a high heel for example? If you are a robot, you will lose balance and fall backward. But the human body is so amazing that it alters its normal mechanics to meet your needs, which is in this article your need of fashion; as in wearing a high heel. What happens when you just raise your heel upward constantly while walking? It will change your walking cycle in means of: missing your heel strike, abnormal fore foot landing, abnormal toes push, continuous leg muscle contraction (which leads to fatigue), abnormal and continuous contraction of the back thigh muscles, pull down of your pelvis because of the continuous thigh muscle contraction, and finally straight low back which will cause back muscles overuse and fatigue, then you will feel pain. Imagine all this happens when you just raise your heel while walking, but what can this abnormal walking cycle cause afterwards? You already know one of them which is low back pain, the others are shortening, fatigue, and pain of your leg muscles and back thigh muscles. Furthermore, pain and numbness of your foot, big toe, and small toe can be the result of that abnormal walking cycle. Now the important question is, how can you manage those problems? Pain on your back? Shortening of muscles? Your foot is numb and painful? There is a solution, it is so easy that people neglect it and are lazy to do it. You can always start with hot packs on your back, legs, and thigh or take a hot shower instead. 15 minutes of heat will manage your painful shortened muscles and chronic pain of your lower back, but is it enough? Of course not! Next is stretching your muscles by long sit and reach out for your toes to stretch your back thigh muscles, step on a wall while extending your knee to stretch your leg muscle, and stretch your lower back muscles by bending your knees and hug them against you while you’re lying on your back. Every stretch should last not less than 20 sec. long to be effective, and you should do it 3 times. So if you calculate the total time now it will be about 30 minutes when you add the other limb for stretching exercises. Your pain should gradually subside, but if it’s not you should consult an orthopedic doctor to help you treat your problems.

More Reasons Johnny Depp Makes Women Everywhere Swoon

Britney Spears ‘freaks out’ schoolchildren Apparently, creating a frightening environment for her own children isn’t enough for Britney Spears. Now she’s spooking random children in Beverly Hills, reports Usmagazine.com. According to the Web site, a “scantily clad” Britney popped up at neighborhood elementary school, “freaking out” students while telling the grownups that she was there to pick up someone else’s kids. “She was just rambling and confused,” one bystander said of Britney, who appeared just before 3 p.m. dismissal. “She said, ‘I’m here to pick up my kids.’ But then she changed her story and said, ‘They aren’t my kids; I have a new attorney, and I came to pick them up for her.’”

Now, we know you don’t need any more reasons to love Johnny Depp, but we’re going to give you one anyway.

But Johnny’s not into just giving out money, he also donated his time. This past November, he had his Captain Jack Sparrow costume flown to London from L.A. and spent four hours reading bedtime stories to patients.

The recent Golden Globe winner has donated nearly $2 million to the London hospital that treated his eightyear-old daughter when she suffered from kidney failure, according to the Daily Mail.

How I Met Your Mother

H

ow I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) is a CBS sitcom that premiered on September 19, 2005. Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, the show received generally positive reviews. TV Guide gave it the “Editor’s Choice” honor in its Fall Preview Issue. Thomas and Bays drew from their friendship in creating the characters, with Ted based loosely on Bays and Marshall and Lily based loosely on Thomas and his wife.

Story In the year 2030, Ted Mosby (voiced by Bob Saget) gathers his daughter and son to tell them the story of how he met their mother. The story begins in 2005 with Ted (Josh Radnor) as a single, 27-year-old architect living with his two best friends from Wesleyan University, Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), a law student, and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), a kindergarten teacher, who have been dating for almost nine years when Marshall proposes. Their engagement causes Ted to think about marriage and finding his soul mate, much to the disgust of his friend Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), a person with a lucrative, though unnamed, corporate job. Ted begins his search for his perfect mate. He is introduced to the ambitious young reporter Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), when Barney plays the game he invented to introduce Ted to women: “Hi, have you met Ted?” Ted quickly falls for Robin and she becomes part of Ted’s group of friends.

umper is an upcoming 2008 science fiction film based on the 1992 science fiction novel Jumper by Steven Gould. The film is directed by Doug Liman and stars Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson and AnnaSophia Robb. Jumper is slated for a February 14, 2008 release.

JUMPING

PALADINS

Throught time, there have been people who possess the power to teleport or to jump. They have used their abilities for personal gains, to escape from their enemies and to change the course of history.

For almost as long as there have been Jumpers there have been those who hunt them, those people are called Paladins. They’re an ancient sect that has long recognized the threat that Jumpers pose to the world. The Paladins have evolved into an elite organization of warrior-like people who find and kill Jumpers around the globe.

The ability to teleport or Jump is a genetic anomaly that has existed for centuries and those who possess this gift have the freedom that most people can’t begin to comprehend. They can transport themselves anywhere in the world at any time and for any reason. Experience and emotion play an important role in the affect of jumping and depending on the Jumpers state of mind at the time, it can cause significant damage. Jumpers Jump for the first time at age 5. As they refine their gift, the Jump becomes more fluid. However, even the most skilled jumper will cause environmental damage when in danger, angry or in a heightened emotional state during a Jump.

Paladins believe Jumpers are simply too powerful to be allowed to exist and also believe that Jumping is bad for the planet. Generally, new Paladins are recruited by family members and the awesome responsibility is handed down through generations. Paladins over time created special weapons that help in capturing and destroying the Jumper. Primary among these are tether weapons which are shot out of a special kind of gun. The tethers have the ability to harness Jumpers and an electrical charge running through the tethers prevents the Jumper from jumping while the Paladin moves in for the kill. Paladins also use special electrified nets to contain Jumpers. 89

Lyrics

Big Girls Don’t Cry Da Da Da Da The smell of your skin lingers on me now You’re probably on your flight back to your home town I need some shelter of my own protection baby To be with myself and center, clarity Peace, Serenity [CHORUS:] I hope you know, I hope you know That this has nothing to do with you It’s personal, myself and I We’ve got some straightenin’ out to do And I’m gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket But I’ve got to get a move on with my life It’s time to be a big girl now And big girls don’t cry Don’t cry Don’t cry Don’t cry The path that I’m walking I must go alone I must take the baby steps ‘til I’m full grown, full grown Fairytales don’t always have a happy ending, do they? And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay [CHORUS] Like the little school mate in the school yard We’ll play jacks and uno cards I’ll be your best friend and you’ll be my Valentine Yes you can hold my hand if you want to ‘Cause I want to hold yours too We’ll be playmates and lovers and share our secret worlds But it’s time for me to go home It’s getting late, dark outside I need to be with myself and center, clarity Peace, Serenity [CHORUS] La Da Da Da Da Da

veryone loves an island getaway. Unfortunately, that’s the problem with a beach vacation you’re often forced to share your stretch of sand with countless others in search of a little R&R. If you’re looking for a beach vacation minus the crowds, we’ve rounded up 10 islands around the world where you’ll find just that and while you may have to work a little harder and travel a little longer to get 1. Anegada, British Virgin Islands

A small airport and ferry service make getting here fairly easy from one of the other British Virgin Islands, but Anegada still feels a world away. The only coral island in the volcanic BVI chain and surrounded by the largest coral barrier reef in the Caribbean, the island is a haven for beach bums, fly fishermen, and wildlife enthusiasts alike. The north shore boasts nearly deserted white-sand beaches, the south is home to a huge population of bonefish, and the west end lays claim to large salt ponds and exotic birds. Spend your nights feasting on local lobster rumored to be the best in the Caribbean and rest your head at one of the island’s few hotels and quaint guesthouse inns. 2. Cat Ba Island, Vietnam If you needed another reason to visit Halong Bay often hailed as the world’s Eighth Wonder the limestone outcropping that is Cat Ba Island in Vietnam is it. The best way to explore the natural wonders of this little-known island home to the remarkable Trung Trang Cave, cascading waterfalls, cliffs, and the aweinspiring National Park is via motorbike. A four-hour ferry ride from Halong Wharf will get you there, but be warned that accommodations are sparse and basic. If you’re not one to get fussy about lodgings, you’ll have no problem staying awhile on this untouched, unspoiled masterpiece by Mother Nature. 3. Daufuskie Island, South Carolina Deserted beaches, plentiful tee times, and absolutely no car traffic that’s what Daufuskie Island, situated between Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head, South Carolina, is all about. The few who do know of it come for its two championship golf courses (one with three oceanfront holes), spa, equestrian center, tennis courts, and several miles of virtually untrammeled white-sand beaches. Accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat, the only modes of transportation once on island are bicycle, golf cart, and your own two feet. And, with only one hotel and a handful of vacation rental homes to choose from during your stay, you’re bound to feel that you’re in on a secret shared only with the pods of dolphins that gather just offshore. 4. Fakarava, French Polynesia Overshadowed in popularity by neighbors Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea, Fakarava, a pristine Polynesian island enveloped by a coral reef and blue lagoon waters, is so remote, it’s not even found on most maps. Yet, it’s part of a UNESCO nature reserve and rich in natural fauna, offers pink-sand beaches, and is rife with rare aquatic life that includes loach, meru, and barracuda not to mention hammerheads and tiger sharks. Not surprisingly, scuba diving is the island’s top draw, but other attractions include the ancient village of Tetamanu, where you’ll find a Catholic church made of coral that dates back to 1874, and pearl farms, where rare black pearls are shelled. 5. Îles de la Madeleine, Quebec Remote, beautiful, and altogether unique, the stellar Îles de la Madeleine (or Magdalene Islands, in English), 130 miles off the coast of Quebec, are the ultimate off-the-path escape. Of the dozen islands that comprise this windswept archipelago, only seven are inhabited, six of which are connected only by sand dunes and long grassy reeds. The islands boast 200 miles of virgin beaches, the freshest seafood, and an uncomplicated atmosphere that make them a joy to visit. Given their northern location, summer is, not surprisingly, the best time to go. Of all the settlements here, Île du Havre aux Maisons is our favorite for its colorful houses, charming boardwalk, and salty pubs and restaurants rife with local character. 100

there, you’ll be rewarded with deserted beaches, fascinating culture, exotic cuisine, and the satisfaction of “discovering” a fabulous, off-the-beaten-path island destination. And if you’ve heard of every island on our list, pat yourself on the back you’re a well-traveled wanderer whose passport must be worn from use! 6. Ischia, Italy Though well-known to European and Asian travelers, the island of Ischia is oft-overlooked by Americans whose sights are more often set on nearby Capri. Though you’ll hardly have Ischia to yourself, you will find fewer crowds and a less-pretentious attitude on this volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Though predominantly green and mountainous, beach bums will have no trouble scoping out a stretch of sand. And, when the sun sets, you’ll have your choice of accommodations for every budget to rest your head, happening nightlife to satisfy your inner dancing queen, and some of the world’s best food this is Italy after all. 7. Lamu, Kenya Kenya’s oldest living settlement, Lamu, boasts golden sands fronting the Indian Ocean, tiny villages, and a breezy, slow-moving pace of life. It’s an island that offers a glimpse into the past a place where donkeys are the main mode of transportation and residents still keep their arms and legs covered out of respect while out in town. The rich atmosphere and history alone makes Lamu worth the trek, but so do its beaches and waters: Shela Beach offers the best swimming, while excursions to ruins and coral reefs could have you snorkeling alongside frolicking dolphins. 8. Terre-de-Haut, Guadeloupe Les Saintes, a spectacular cluster of eight islands situated just off the coast of Guadeloupe and accessible only by ferry or private yacht, is the very essence of French West Indies life without the crowds to boot. Terre-de-Haut is the most appealing of them all, with its attractive beaches, mouth-watering Creole cuisine, and laid-back French-speaking locals; it’s also the only Les Saintes island with overnight accommodations. Beach bums will love the powdery white sands of the palm-lined Plage de Pompierre, while the spectacular underwater world of colorful reefs and exotic fish (attracting divers as renowned as Jacques Cousteau) makes scuba diving and snorkeling another huge draw. Rent a golf cart to get around (you won’t find much in the way of cars here) and zip around to a different beach at dawn, midday, and dusk. 9. Vis, Croatia With its medieval villages, deserted beaches, ancient ruins, rambling olive groves, and the best vineyards in Dalmatia, Vis, Croatia, is poised to become the next “it spot” for sun and fun on the Adriatic. The winding streets of the two main towns, Vis and Komiza, are brimming with restaurants serving delicious seafood and Italian-style fare, while miles of sandy beaches, pebbly enclaves, and glittering shores attract sunbathers Srebrna, a beautiful beach covered in large flat stones that appear silver in the sun, is one of the most beautiful. At just two hours by ferry from Split, Vis offers only four modest hotels, but visitors can also opt to rent apartments and villas. 10. Yap, Micronesia Part of a remote tropical archipelago in the midst of the Pacific, Yap is the most intriguing destination in the island nation of Micronesia. Having managed to escape most outside influences, like colonization and mass tourism, the island’s traditional way of life remains both authentic and distinct: Legends are portrayed in colorful dances; village women dress in grass skirts, the men in brightly colored loincloths; and ancient stone money discs are still used as local tender. Spend your days hiking among the island’s rolling green hills, mangrove forests, and antiquated stone paths or, go off and explore the ocean’s coral reefs and swim with dolphins and magnificent manta rays. 101
