Prof. Dr. -Ing. Widjaja Martokusumo Dean School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development Institut Teknologi Bandung
Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and FHE (University of Applied Sciences Erfurt/ Fachochschule Erfurt) have a long relationship, which was formally set up more than a decade ago, 2005/2006. It was the time, as the two renowned institutions committed to collaborate workshop on Planning and Design of Tsunami prone areas in Indonesia. Several departments from both institutions had been involved, including architecture, landscape architecture, civil engineering, and physics engineering. The issue on resilience and sustainable planning and design has been critically discussed in close relation to disaster mitigation. Since then, several activities such as workshops, field studies, students and faculty exchange, visiting professor programs, collaborative design charrettes had been passionately planned and implemented. Many critical insights based on academic and teaching activities in architecture and landscape design had been shared with the students from both universities.
facilities are dominant remnants of the area, which had to be taken into account for the future development. All 50 students had proposed seven different ideas and scenarios for planning and design of the area. Besides workshop, presentation/reviews and lectures, during the workshop, students had opportunity to visit the city of Jena and also explore the city of Erfurt. The final presentation was held on the 24 November 2017. It was a public event, which had been sympathetically appreciated by well-known local media, such as FOCUS Online and Thüringer Allgemeine. The opportunity of being part of the international academic engagements has been highly valued and this will surely enhanced and promote our students to responds to future needs and global imperatives. It has always been our deep concern and commitment to keep our future generation in their enthusiasm and passion to endure them in energetic way to anticipate and respond our future disruptive.
In celebration of this long relationship and commitment of academic engagement, an interdisciplinary design workshop was initiated and prepared since 2016. The conjointly organized interdisciplinary Urban Design ICE City West Workshop that took place from 20-24 November 2017 in Erfurt was an output. Students from the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development, Institut Teknologi Bandung and the Faculty of Architecture, City and Landscape Planning, Fachhochschule Erfurt (Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design and Landscape Planning) attended this fivedays intensive planning and design workshop. And with different cultural backgrounds and programs, they worked together with their student fellows and supervisors. A group of 15 students and two faculty members from ITB were involved in the workshop.
The implementation of the workshop was successfully completed through the sincere supports and helps of many important stakeholders. On behalf of the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development (SAPPD) ITB, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Prof. Stephan Landwehr, the Vice rector international cooperation, Ms. Cornelia Witter from the International Office of FHE. Also, to my FHE colleagues, Prof. Philipp Krebs (Dean of Faculty Architecture and Urban Planning), Prof. Rolf Gruber (Architecture), Prof. Nikolai Roskamm and Prof. Gesa Königstein (Urban Planning), Prof. Rolf Schumacher and Prof. Gerd Bischoff (Landscape Planning) and also my colleague Budi Faisal PhD. I also thank Aswin Indraprastha PhD, chair of Architecture undergraduate program and Dr.-Ing. Heru W. Poerbo, chair of Urban Design master program of SAPPD ITB for their supports and workshop preparations. Special thanks to our students had passionately and significantly contributed to the completion of this concise workshop publication.
In brief, the workshop tasks dealt with the developing ideas on new development area the so-called ICE City West Development. It is a strategic urban area that is situated close to the Erfurt Central Railway Station, which has been neglected for years. The workshop tried to discuss and propose concepts of revitalization and development plan for the interesting postindustrial urban area to anticipate new urban dynamics due to the emerging role of Erfurt as important railway hub in central Germany. The notions of historic railway and its associated
Prof. Philipp Krebs Dean Faculty of Architecture an Urban Planning University of Applied Sciences Erfurt
As the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture an Urban Planning I am very happy about the inspiring cooperation between the Institut Teknologi Bandung ( ITB ) and the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. The Erfurt University of Applied Sciences as part of the ongoing cooperation between ITB and FHE (it started in 2006) this time we organized an international and interdisciplinary (50 students and teachers from architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture where involved) here in Erfurt. The Topic was a site in the heart of the city, located right next to the main station, called “ICE-City West”. During the one-week workshop last November 2017 intl. student teams with a cross cultural approach generated future visions for a completely new part of the historic city of Erfurt. Joining the workshop give some of our students the chance to explore the different ways in “making architecture and planning” as a key to get into the topic. The participation of Prof. Widjaja Martokusumo and Prof. Budi Faisal fertilized the workshop and stimulated the creation of a sophisticated didactic setting of the beaten tracks. For all involved the joint workshop with ITB again this time turned out to be an exciting memorable experience - strongly suggesting further mutual academic exchange activities in the years to come.
Finally, please allow me to share with you all the details and results of the multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary workshop, and do enjoy these exciting experiences of our students, together with their fellows from FHE.

students found some obstacles, but gradually they managed to overcome those difficulties along the way. Working in a team with diverse languages had been a tough challenge.
In the interdisciplinary Urban Design ICE City West Workshop, FHE and ITB students were triggered to find things that spark their interest as a door to open new possibilities. This interdisciplinary workshop had given valuable experience to students on how to collaborate in multi-discipline atmosphere.
The multi-cultural background of the students that come from so called ‘East’ and ‘West’ region had enriched the color and style of the final result. The output of this workshop was not merely a hypothesis for the project, but beyond that it had created a very strong bond of better understanding between diverse groups of people.
In a five-days workshop, students from various cultural and disciplines had been given a twostep task to come up with a hypothesis for the project. Diverse approach of urban planning, landscape, urban design, and architecture were intermingled in the whole process of this project. They substituted each others. The first part of the task started with finding things that provoked their interest. Starting from a found object in the selected location was quite blowing the student’s minds. They were pushed to explore their ultimate creativity. Students developed their ideas to find the most critical problems surrounding the project. The second part of the task was to have better understanding about the urban-context. The unique issue of the site provided a challenging case for the students. Located in the strategic urban area of ICE-CITY development next to the heritage railway station, students were driven to come up with a solution with strong historical and urban constraints. Students from different backgrounds shared their ideas and perspectives on how the project should be tackled and developed, resulting in a hypothesis as a foundation of their final proposal for the workshop. Even though with different cultural backgrounds, quite sometimes,
In this fast moving era of development, boundaries between multidiscipline cultures and backgrounds are growing thinner. This workshop is one of many means we could provide students to adapt with future challenges. The results are very satisfying in both experience and academic ways. We hope that this academic relationship could generate more intriguing ideas in future collaborations. Finally, as always, I am a great believer of collaboration. The more diverse culture and disciplines are collaborated, the better comprehensive understanding and result we will get. I do believe this collaborative project has nurtured the very essence of our souls, which is: being respectful to one another. Respectfully,
Prof. Rolf Gruber Dipl.Ing. AKT. Architecture and Urban Design Faculty of Architecture University of Applied Sciences Erfurt
ITB and FHE schools of architecture have been cooperating for a long time – the first time we conducted a joint workshop was in Bandung in 2006.Ever since there have been many visits and cooperative Workshops back and forth including a stay of our colleague Prof. Martokusumo in Erfurt as guest lecturer. Organizing our joint workshops over the years we on both sides made sure to pic topics of vital dominance in the according current developments and public discussions. This time here in Erfurt we chose the site of the so called “ICE-City West” – a large still undeveloped and undiscovered area right in the heart of the city – with a super central location right next to Erfurt´s main train station. From November 20-24 2017 we for the first time in our cooperation organized not only a joint international but also an interdisciplinary workshop ( architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture together ) in Erfurt with a mix of students and teachers from Indonesia and Germany from all the 3 fields involved – 50 students altogether. In a very focused and creative atmosphere the intl. student teams generated a broad variety of future perspectives for this site, which included a set of challenging large industrial structures triggering exciting visions for a completely new neighborhood in town. We would like to thank all students and teachers involved in this workshop, that turned out to be one of the most inspiring and satisfying academic experiences of our long lasting cooperation.

INTRODUCTION
ERFURT CITY
THÜRINGEN
Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia which is also an ancient German Settlement. Throughout the Middle Ages, Erfurt was an important trade city because of its location which is located near the Gera river. Together with another trading cities like Gotha, Tennstedt, Arnstadt and Langensalza, Erfurt became a trading center in Germany. Erfurt lies at the crossroads of important trade routes; Via Regia is one of the most widely used East-West routes between France and Russia (via Frankfurt, Erfurt, Leipzig and Wrocław) and other routes in the North-South
direction is the connection between the Baltic Ports and the big cities of northern Italy such as Venice and Milan. The Industrial Revolution reached Erfurt in the 1840s, precisely when the Thuringian Railway connecting Berlin and Frankfurt was built. In the following years, many factories engaged in various sectors were established. After the German Unification in 1871, Erfurt was moved from the southern border of Prussia closer to the center of Germany, so the city’s citadel was no longer needed. The demolition of the city’s fortress
in 1873 led to a construction boom in Erfurt, as it is now possible to build on an area previously occupied by the city walls and surrounding areas. Many public and private buildings are emerging and infrastructure is increasing rapidly. The population grew dramatically from 40,000 to 130,000 in 1914 and the city grew in all directions. Religion and education also played an important role in the history of the city during the second millennium. During its heyday as a religious center, Erfurt had about 90 churches, chapels, monasteries and
universities - the fourth in Germany and was founded in 1392. Erfurt also played an important role in the field of Reformation: Martin Luther became a monk and entered the priesthood in Erfurt and the majority of the population switched to Protestantism after Luther proclaimed his thesis at Wittenberg in 1517. Erfurt today (with about 200.000 inhabitants and situated in a central geografical position within Germany and wellintegrated in an existing transportation network) is a proof that with thoughtful planning, advancement in
technology and history can coexist gracefully; Erfurt’s appearance respects medieval roots, while adding contemporary touches that are sometimes classy and unique. This situation will be further improved due to a large scale post reunification traffic program to be completed in 2017 when Erfurt will become a traffic link within the high-speed train network connecting the east-west route with the north-south route. Erfurt will become a traffic link within the high-speed train network connecting the east-west route with the north-south route.

DOMPLATZ
ANGER
MAIN STATION
PROJECT
SITE BACKGROUND
STADTPARK
The location of the site lies at west of the present main train station. It is situated about 500 meters south of the commercial pedestrian area “Anger“. The location is a former rampart from the 14th century – the block structure that was left of the original old main station (1846-1890 developed as the Thuringian Railway – Via Regia, Leipzig/Frankfurt) today is used as office building and located west of the present station. This area is named ICE WEST (about 6,5 ha). As the city center of Erfurt grew rapidly, the ICE WEST area seemed abandoned and there were no plans for further development. This area is hidden from the main road and not widely known by the locals. In fact, this area has big development potential as it is located in a strategic location which is very close to the train station and the city center. Located in the middle of 2 main circulation axis of pedestrian and vehicles and surrounded by residential areas, the ambiance if the site feels different compared to the ICE EAST site which already has a development plan as a result of competition conducted by Erfurt City Planning Agency.
17
OBJECTIVE The students have to propose a design concept of ‘ICE City West - Erfurt’. What should become of it (function, image, etc.), what should remain, what should give way, what should arise, should old and new merge or is it only possible with radical solutions? The 50 students got all the freedom of thought, which is only limited by neighbourhood and historical context.
TASK 1 GROUNDING
TASK 2 POSSIBLE FUTURE The thesis statement has to be rethinked and modified. The students have to develop and visualize a ‘Possible Futures’ scenario for the project site based on the thesis. The scenario must be focused on one aspect, and used as main topic for developing a design. The students could use any visualization that seem to be most appropriate and helpful for visualizing their idea (perspectives, diagrams, sections, plans, etc.)
PROJECT
ICE CITY WEST: ‘URBAN TACTICS’
The first step of the workshop was a field-trip to the site of ICECITY WEST to discover the site and zooming into unexpected qualities & potentials. The next steps were: • Identifying and visualizing three phenomena of the site, that were fascinating, irritating, or maybe seem strange. • Bringing along a found object that signified the specific of the site and give the item a title. • Formulating a thesis for the site in a written and a graphic or other visual form.

Starting from brick that we found, which is in contrast sharp from the outside and wrecked from the inside. This development idea tries to rejuvenate old abandoned area on the center of the city, by combining classic materials with modern construction and contrasting value between new and old. It is mix-used development which contain housing, commercial, and multipurpose building within wild environment and flexible pedestrian way. The permeable green space is a strategy to conserve existing vegetation so that people could experience the wilderness on the inside of area. This concept is expected to increase the attractiveness of previously isolated areas to be open and can compete with surrounding buildings.

The old two-story building is an iconic attraction that will be adapted to contemporary needs. The exhibition space at the first floor, and cafĂŠ and commercial space at the second floor will invite people to come inside. This building also shows the contrast between new and old materials where the material of this brick will be original ornaments derived from existing buildings. Combined with glass material that will give the impression of modern and openness, glass material will provide a free atmosphere, blurring the boundary between inside and outside.

JOURNAL THE WORKSHOP
DAY 1 - FRANKFURT The plane was landed smoothly and I was so nervous. It was my first experience went to Europe especially to German, everything seemed new for me. First thing I learned is that everything in Germany goes with the rules. It seemed strict but it was good because everything became organized.
Day 1– TOR & SITE VISIT Meet some new colleagues with different culture, background, and way of thinking. Site sightseeing. Exciting method, we have to take something from site and maybe can become something in the end of the project.
DAY 2 – FRANKFURT to ERFURT During the trip to Erfurt, I saw the different building types, as we getting closer to Erfurt, it was more classic and historic. Erfurt is extremely beautiful, I really love everything in Erfurt, the way they conserve the culture are exist in every components of the city.
Day 4 – WORKSHOP The only fullteam day. In motivation “I need to go at 4, so we have to finished it earlier!”, so we did unexpectedly superfast and effective work, solving question, sharp ideas, no chitchat discussion. This what we call “passion”.
The whole workshop was great, I make a lot of friend, undestanding how to work with people in a different way of thinking, and understanding another design approach. It was also interesting how we connect to the site by taking item from there. THE TRIP
After tiring workshop, we have much free time to strolling around europe until our departure time to Indonesia. We decide to traveling around germany and netherlands. it was super busy trip that we only have around a day in every city. We didn’t have much time to sleep. The trip was making me excited to see how architecture was build by great vision to solve great problem from great architect and planner in the great city. But what more unforgettable is how we deal with each other habit and different interest. It makes the trip richer, but also take more time to wait on the other. Unexpectedly go to the bookstore take more time than any other museum and galery. Basically there three sin that gonna happen to slow down your trip. The bookstore basically is one of our great sin. The other two is toilet and selfie.
POSTGRADUATE ARCHITECTURE STUDENT
Day 5 - FINAL PRESENTATION Some of us can’t make it today, but show must go on. Back to the brick, called our ideas as “inside out”, everything is perfect, and nobody asking. We did happy with that, but that wasn’t mean as a good sign.
DAY 3 – ERFURT First day of the workshop!, it started with invite people to join the group and grounding. My group are 4 people from Architects program, 1 from Landscape Architecture, and I from Urban Planning. Grounding went so tiring but interesting, we found an object (It was a brick) to be developed into a design and after that we went back to the Campus and we discuss about the presentation next days. DAY 4 – ERFURT First presentation went smoothly, everything works really well. At that day, I tried the campus’s facilities and it’s very high-tech. As a student, you could printed everything in all size for free. After presentation, we had social event at the bar, I learned some informal cultures that I could just found in the bar. DAY 5 – ERFURT Had an excursion to Jena with the Germans also. We learned about how Jena could utilize their old buildings with some new functions. We also learned about the regulation, construction and the land use of Jena.
DAY 6 – ERFURT Full day of working on group to prepare the final presentation. It was very full day of sharing ideas each others. I learned how Germans thinking about design and any constraint of the area. Deal with the culture, club is more necessary than food - street. LOL DAY 7 – ERFURT Final presentation was amazing, it was a day full of appreciation. Giving applause (by knocking the chairs/tables) it was such a new culture learned. I saw so many good design by my friends. The hardest part was saying goodbye to all Germans. See you on top guys!
DAY 8-9-10 – ERFURT It was black Friday. For a student, it was a big treasure. I went to Anger 1 for a whole day and bought some goods and also souvenirs. It was our last day in Germany, before I went back to Indonesia. It was an amazing experience, I hope I could go back to Germany and stay longer.

Day 3 – EXCURSION TO JENA Half of us didn’t came. Not on my city-list in Germany, but in Jena I learn that architecture is not the only thing that build better environment. Transportation does. Infrastructure does. Landscape does. People does, and integrating every aspect in the smallest degree is way more important.
DAY 3 – ERFURT Started the day from Anger 1 Erfurt, Anger 1 is located in the middle of Erfurt City, it’s the biggest commercial area and the concept was a sharing streets which you can’t divide between the pedestrians and the transportation (only bicycle and Erfurt Stadtbahn). The most memorable was at The Domplatz Erfurt, where I could see the whole city of Erfurt.
NADIA GISSMA
Day 2 –PRESENTATION Yesterday we take a ruined brick that sharp on the outside and organically beauty surface from the inside. There’s tension and contrast image between it. We talk about it, and the professor like it. Seems gonna be an evolutionary concept! Seems like the brick gave us connection to the location.

JOURNAL Day 01 This is the first day I joined the multi-diciplinary join workshop between ITB and FH Erfurt and also my first time to going to Germany and work with multi diciplinary students from FHE. On the first day we formed a working group and member of my group that are Zakky (architecture-ITB), Hayk (FHE), Dimi (FHE), Konrad (FHE), Ji (FHE) and Tin (FHE). At this point we also come to the design location and look for things that can be brought as design objects, so we brought old and broken bicycle bell, this is new for me because so far I only rely on the analysis of the site to the design, now I learned that designing something not only from the site analysis and physical object surrounding the area but also by taking the philosophy of the small object that can be found in the location. I am very grateful to be placed with 14 good friends and accompanied by Prof. Widjaja and Mr. Budi Faisal that always impressed me with their knowledge.
The International Workshop program was a very interesting expirience. All the process --from prep to workshop-- was incredible learning process. I enjoyed the preparation and sharing classes we had before the actual workshop. It gave me a broader perspective to see how a issue is solved. On the first day of the workshop we had a site visit. Each group were instructed to pick an item from the site that represents the character of the site. Our group picked up a 3 items: a piece of glass, a leaf, and a broken bicycle bell. We agreed to use the broken bell as our item. On the second day we elaborated our concept based on item that we chose, phenomenons we found interesting, and the opportunities that the site had. On the third day we had a brief trip to Jena. We visited an on going project near Jena Train Station. The excursion gave us some practical insights to develop our project.
Day 02 Second day we prepare for the first presentation in the afternoon. We present what we found during the site visit in yesterday, particularly in strange thing, irritating, fascinating and also we were presented the object we found and philosophy that will we take of the object. For me, I had little difficulty with the English skills of some of the member team, they just fluent in Germany and “their language”, so it is difficult for us to communicate and discuss about the whole design concept.
The last day was presentation day. The ideas that were generated were beyond my expectations. I really liked the atmosphere around team presentations. We learnt a lot of new things. To be part of a cross-discipline and cross-culture project was fun yet challenging. Each discipline has it’s way to work on solution for the issue. Eventhough it elaborates the way we see the project, sometimes it doesn’t always compliment each other. To negotiate between the needs and priority of each discipline was a real challenge. Learning about compromise was a very valueble expirience.

Day 05 This is the last day of our workshop, which is this is the FINAL PRESENTATION. I was so nervous at that time, although I understood well the material I was going to present but I was still nervous for the final presentation, but when I arrived at the campus and took part in preparing the panel to be presented, slowly the nervousness disappeared and I began to believe in what we would present. After we presented our design results, I was quite satisfied with what I and my group had done for 5 days, as well as reviews from professors and lecturers, they also provided excellent reviews for our group. On this last day I also embraced Ji and Tin while thanking you for their hospitality during the workshop and as a farewell sign. I am very excited to be given the opportunity to work with my group, they are great people but still inferior, I really hope I can meet them again.
POSTGRADUATE URBAN DESIGN STUDENT
Day 04 The fourth day is the last day before the final presentation, today we devote all our ability to find new ideas for designing ICE WEST ERFURT. The language difficulties we experienced slowly disappeared and we started communicating with pictures and sketches. On that day I was a bit nervous with the final presentation, when looking at the other groups product, I felt my group product was meaningless. Late afternoon we tried harder and finally we have a siteplan design for ICE WEST ERFURT. After the discussion on the site plan and all the group members agreed, we rushed to make a model of our design that could be presented at the final presentation tomorrow.
DEVI JOHANA TANIA
Day 03 The third day we were going to field trip to Jena, the thing that appealed to me when we visited the residential area is arranged very neatly and equipped with various support facilities. In addition we visited a commercial complex for lunch, the interesting is that the housing complex there are many buildings of European buildings are very beautiful and also in the housing complex is divided into 2 classification of roads, semi pedestrian mall and full pedestrian mall. The design of the road corridor really caught my attention as it relates to my thesis.
On the fourth day we had a full day workshop. We were quite overwhelmed because on the last brainstorming session there were so many great ideas. So we decided to brainstorm individual versions of the project. After individual brainstorms we combined our ideas by negotiating which parts are the strong points of each ideas.

‘The Passage’ concept is to create an architectural journey between the tension of space and time, just like an imagination of a train going through a space-time-traveltunnel. Old buildings that have historical value are preserved and added by some new functions. New buildings are built between existing buildings that create some green open spaces (inner-courts) and functional building clusters with unique themes: ‘Experience, Create, Enjoy, and Live!’. All of the integration of calm atmosphere, spaces, functions, forms, and urban context makes ‘The Passage’ as an offer to reconnect & give meaning to the past, explain & live the present, and provides confidence for reiventing the future. DAY 4 – POSSIBLE FUTURE Today we were working on the second task: ‘Possible Future’. We start by modifying the thesis statement as recommended by the professor. The discussion process ‘Possible Future’ was circling around and time consuming to get agree with ours concept. I then helped create a concept poster. I learned that Germans work effectively and in accordance with the duration given. DAY 5 – FINAL PRESENTATION After working hard phase, finally today was the final presentation. I was a little nervous to do it, especially since all of these things were only done in a short process. I admired the ideas from the other groups and accepted the inputs from the professor. Although for me, our solution was a bit pragmatic, but these concepts become an inspiration and a practice to become a better architect.
The next day on November 18th, we met our lecturer (Mr. Widjaja and Mr. Budi), we visited the main campus of Fachhochschule Erfurt (FHE) and walked around the city of Erfurt. During walked around the city, I became even more impressed with this city, especially when I visited Public Open Spaces crossed by the Gera River, because it has a very good water management system in the middle of the city. We started our workshop on November 19th, we formed a group consisting of 5-6 people from different major (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design). We worked as team for 5 days until the final presentation. During the workshop, I got many valuable insights and experiences, especially on architecture (heritage buildings) and urban planning. Combining many ideas of people from different characters, cultures, languages and backgrounds, was not an easy thing and this becomes a challenge in completing the projects we design. Even I feel difficulty in terms of communication especially with the same landscape major from Fachhochschule Erfurt because she is not fluent in English, so the discussion about landscape design can’t be conveyed properly. I am aware that cooperation, cohesiveness and sharing are key in a team work and that is what we do, so that the project design can be well resolved. Beside having workshop, we also had excursion to Jena to see some of the projects they are currently working on. I learned that in the planning and development process of a city especially in Jena, it must be based on the European Standards that should pay attention to the existence of flora and fauna, so that all designs must be sustainable. Finally, on November 24th we made the final presentation, all the ideas and concepts of each person made into 1 design concept (zoning, accessibility, space function and Green Open Space function). The presentation process went very smoothly, and some critics and suggestions from the professors were very useful for my group. I feel proud of my teamwork even though I am aware that the design concept that we created still has many shortcomings, especially because of the short time of the workshop.

DAY 3 – EXCURSION TO JENA Today we had excursions to Jena, it was different from the previous plans to have excursions to Leipzig. In our group, only Galina who was unable to attend. We visited the Jena city planning office and toured several projects with a similar context to our site, primarily because of Soviet-built-era character. From this excursion I learned about the integration of stakeholders, planning, architecture, environment, and infrastructure in Germany holds the key to the progress of the city.
On November 16th was the first day we departed from Indonesia to Frankfurt city. After arriving in Frankfurt City, we stayed at A&O Frankfurt Galluswarte hostel for 2 days and used the time to surround the city of Frankfurt around the hostel. Then, we continued our journey to Erfurt with a bus to be taken within 3 hours. On arrival at Erfurt, I was really amazed to see this city. Erfurt, I though are very comfortable, beautiful, clean, and fun which features old architecture throughout its city. I really fell in love with this city.

DAY 2 – DISCUSSION & PRESENTATION 1 Today we continue by making posters of the results from our discussions. There are some improvements from the discussion yesterday. In addition, we also do the site analysis together. I helped make a poster for the presentation at 15 o’clock. During the presentation, we performed well thanks to Ari’s fluency. There are inputs and challenges from professors about ideas that can be developed later.

DAY 1 – GROUNDING Finally, today the workshop started! We started off by forming a group that consisted of: Me, Monika, Lady, Jixiang, Galina, and Ari. The next step, we look at the mockups of the city and ‘grounding’. This grounding method was very interesting to collect problems and ideas in a simple way. On the site, we decide to bring an old train sign. On our return, we discussed three phenomena of the site, that were fascinating, irritating, or maybe seem strange. We decided not to separate each of those feelings. The discussions run smoothly and effectively so that the thesis statement can be created in this day.
I never imagined before, could go to Germany and got a chance to join the workshop at Fachhochschule Erfurt (FHE). Before leaving, I was very excited preparing for this workshop and honestly it became my first experience to go to Europe.

DAY 0 – EXPLORING ERFURT CITY Today is the day before the workshop begin, and we had a very interesting agenda to go around and know more Erfurt city with our professors. The exhaustion of the long journeys before this was surpassed by the eagerness of exploration and learning. Devi and I departed from the hostel at 8 o’clock to the Dom to celebrate a Mass, and at exactly 11 o’clock we gathered with the others in Anger. In a short time, we toured most of the city of Erfurt: FHE (Main Buildings), Faculty of Architecture, Domplatz, Zitadelle Petersberg, and Krämerbrücke. Walking in the city of Erfurt was so fascinating especially because of the preservations of the old buildings.

Day 1 In the morning, we greeted professors and students from Erfurt and made teams consisted of 5 to 6 people. After that, the professors explained about the project, the existing site, what to do, and so on. We were given a map, information of the site location, and papers contained to-do-list. The first thing to do was went to the site, explained the site in 3 words, and brought along an object that could be found there. We then went site visiting by foot, found out that the place is unlikely to exist in a developed country such as Germany. It was because the place was abandoned, no trace of human being, and isolated. We took pictures a lot, brought along a signage that most probably indicated its name, and analized why the place is left undeveloped. Day 2 We came back to the university at 9 a.m to finish the rest of the task given. After some discussion, we agreed that the best three words to describe the site were ‘isolation’, ‘invisibility but vitality’, and lastly ‘oblivion’. They signified the loneliness of the place eventhough it is located in the crowded city. They also indicated a big difference of itself compared to its surrounding places, how undeveloped and abandoned it is. I did some hand sketches to bring out some originality as well as to present the situation based on the observation. During presentation, all teams presented their thoughts of the site and I personally appreciated all works. At night, we did a small party at a bar where students from Indonesia and Erfurt could socialized. Day 3 We gathered in campus at 7a.m to get a short brief on what to do that day. Actually, we were going to visit Jena, about two hours from Erfurt by bus. We were sightseeing the place to broaden our architectural vocabulary so that we could think of the best solutions related to the project based on what we had had found from visiting Jena. Jena is quite different from Erfurt, where there are a lot of apartment blocks and some of them are under construction. Those apartments are either for rent or sell and every few blocks there are parks for leisure. Some of these apartments are for homeless which are surprisingly well-developed. After that, we had our lunch before going back to the university to continue our project. Day 4 Like the days before, we come to the campus at 9a.m to discuss the project. We mainly took a lot of time in thinking of what concept could fit the project. While doing so, we separately made our own ideas about what to do, including creating main entrance, circulation, green areas, buildings, and other diagram. These ideas were then compiled and filtered based on preferences of the most people in the team. It took whole day to finish the rest of the project, which was including designing concept, how we recreated the place so that its potential can be brought out. We also had to make the proposed perspectives that served as points of interest. Day 5 We did final presentation in the morning which was attended by professors from both university, ITB and Erfurt. Those who are Indonesians were asked to wear batik for the dresscode. Presentations included posters, sketches, and 3D models. All teams presented their ideas and concepts very well and impressed professors and audiences back then. Some questions, comments, and even suggestions were given as well. At the end of presentation, all of us gathered to take photos and gave souvenirs from ITB for teammates from Erfurt. We did a small farewell party and then cleaned up the room we used for presentation. At night, we asked friends from Erfurt to join us for dinner and we did some small talks. Though it was sad to part with them, some memories were kept in heart. Those memories would be spoken by pictures we took during our trip in Erfurt.

JOURNAL So many words on my mind that cannot be described to tell you how I feel in every single day and our journeys..
Day 1 – TOR & SITE VISIT I met so many new friends with different personalities, way of thinking, culture, and habit. At first, we were so shy and talk awkwardly. Actually we have difficulties in communication because of language, but we got along well then.
The journey of November Golden, crisp leaves falling softly from almost bare trees, Lifting and falling in a hushed gentle breeze, And the Earth is painted a thousand shades of red. I have never seen such beauty in decay.
Day 2 –PRESENTATION My team and I picked wild flowers which we found at the site. For us, this object is very interesting because although the site is abandoned and messy, there are many beautiful wild flowers and it won our heart. We called our object as “the abandoned beauty”.
Picturesque of thy might Singing death even bright Everything is beautiful even some that were weeds Earth’s view enchanted And the overwhelming feeling of happiness.
Day 3 – EXCURSION TO JENA This was one of my amazing trip in Germany. I saw and learned many building in Jena and I realized that those were very different with buildings in my country. Buidings in Jena are mostly cubical and simple.
It’s like I got caught in a jumble of emotions, I figured out that this is what I had always wanted. It was beautiful, the perfect moment, I was unbelievably happy.
Day 5 - FINAL PRESENTATION In the presentation day, we presented our ideas in front of many students and lecturers. We got critics, advices, compliments from the audiences. I learned many things from that day, I learned how to present in English, how to speak in front of many people, and learn how to deal with others from different backgrounds. .

Day 4 – WORKSHOP In that day, I was a little bit dissapointed since my team was not full team. Only me, Syntia, Patrick, and Mathias came . But it was okay. My team struggled so much to find an idea about what will us make in the site. We worked until 10 pm that day. Tiring yet fun!

For the Landscape area, we use pavement using porous paving and grass block to facilitate rainwater absorption thereby reducing run off within the site and spider-nect material using softscape grass. To improve air quality and reduce microclimate, many trees are also planted in spider-nect areas and in sites that also serve as air pollution filters, provide comfort to road users, and enhance the ecology of the city.

JOURNAL
Last but not least, I want to say thank you to the committee and lecturers of the workshop from both universities who had prepared the whole events. I believe that this workshop will give many insights and benefits for both university to keep enhancing the architecture study in both university. I learnt many things here and hopefully it will be held again next time.
THE FIRST PRESENTATION Tuesday on November 21st, is the first presentation day of the Workshop at the FHE Architecture Campus Building. The data presented is to identify 3 phenomenas in the site, which are fascinating, irritating, strange at the design site. The object we propose is a snippet inside the wall, which is shaped like a honeycomb. EXCURSION IN JENA Arriving at Jena, we looked at Jena’s development planning presentation and were invited to see the project being done. Both in presentation and workmanship process Jena planners have European standards and standards that must be adhered to, such as all development and planning in any form should pay attention to flora and fauna. So, all designs must refer to the sustainability and green space that all beings. FINAL PRESENTATION The materials that we discussed included discussion of zoning space, space function, accessibility, open space and open space, and conservation of heritage buildings within the site. Each of us delivers ideas and concepts for the whole, so it combines into 1 design. Friday on November 24th, the opening of the first presentation starts with group 4, and runs quite smoothly despite still having many design flaws. We realize there are still many shortcomings in all of the design, given the criticism and input from professors who are very open to our view that missed. Later that night, we invited some FHE students to hold a small farewall party like dinner. We collaborate very well with FHE Erfurt and others until the end, so this is a great experience in this educational period. EXTEND IN EUROPE On Saturday November 25th we toured to Weimar. We visit the Bauhaus Museum and visit the crowded Christmas market and see the city venues, visit modern campuses that use some of the automatic technology in the room, and ride around the historical buildings of Weimar City. Arriving in Berlin on November 26th, we visited the Jewish Memorial Park, the Jewish Museum, the stunning Brandenburger Tor located at Ebertstraße 24, and colonial buildings such as city hall buildings and cathedrals of gothic, renaissance, byzantine, and other architectural values. At half past nine morning of November 28, we arrived in Amsterdam. We visited the museum area Rijksmuseum Amsterdam to Iamsterdam, Nemo museum, plaza, Windhill Amsterdam, and others. Arriving in Rotterdam on 29 November, we stayed at The Cube Houses. We visit Rotterdam Centraal Station, Erasmus Bridge, Wilhelminapier, past Beurs World Trade Center Rotterdam, floating pavilion or Drijvend Paviljoen, pass the building, Hulstkamp Gebouw, and board the Water Taxi Rotterdam. Morning of November 30th we arrived in Frankfurt and prepared for our return to Indonesia in December 1st.

And finally, we had our final presentation on the last day of workshop which was Friday. I felt proud of my team work and result even there were many obstacles in the process.
STARTING WORKSHOP Monday morning at 8.30 am and November 20th, we came and gathered at Main Campus FHE. After opening of the FHE team finished, we formed a group team. Group 4 consisting of 2 students Landscape design, 1 Architecture design, and 3 Urban Planning. After that we conducted a survey study directly.

We started our workshop on Monday morning, November 19th. We formed groups consist of 5-6 people from architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning. I got 3 new friends as members in my team. Tabea and Anton from Germany and Benan from Turkey. We worked as a team for the next 5 days until the final presentation. I felt the new and unique experience to collaborate with people from different background, culture and language. Sometimes we felt difficulty in communicating, but finally we found that it was interesting and created a good chemistry in our team work. I learn a lot about foreign culture, history, mindset, etc.
ARRIVED Sunday morning on November 19th at around 10 am, we did an appointment with Mr. Widjaja and Mr. Budi to get around in Erfurt City and visit the main campus of Fachhochschule Hanseplatz Erfurt (FHE). We visited the main streets to the small streets of Erfurt City, Andreasstaße who used to be prisoners, visited Zitadelle Petersberg as the fortress of Erfurt City in Domplatz, and traced the streets to the Gera River.
ALBERT GIANTA MARGONO
This is my second time going abroad and I’ve never expected too much that I could go to Europe and explore Germany. I was really excited to participate the workshop since I was still in Indonesia. We arrived at Frankfurt Airport on November 16th and had a night stay in A&O Galluswarte hostel near Frankfurt Central Station. We had a walk for a while at the night before going to Erfurt the day after. While arrived to Erfurt, the first impression of me was that Erfurt is a nice place to live and the people were so kind. I could feel their warm personality although it was so cold there. We had a meeting with Mr. Widjaja, our dean and Mr. Budi, our lecturer on Sunday, November 18th. We had a walk with our dean and lecturer to Fachochschule Erfurt and our dean introduced the university and told us a little story about the relation between ITB and FHE.

The workshop itself is really – really fun we got share our opinion about the site that we were working on and each of us had a different way of view about what we can make from the site. And the way people appreciate one another was the thing that I learnt a lot here, whatever the opinion you gave will be considered and put in mind. Because everyone had a potential that can be developed. Our new friend was very friendly and mindful. And the working atmosphere also good, the tools that they provided was beyond imagination. After a few days of sharing our opinion, we present our works on the last day. Each team has its own unique concept and opinion about the site, it was very fun. The next day before our trips came to an end, we went for shopping and we got a lot of discount because its black Friday, after that we prepared our luggage because its time for us to go back to Indonesia in the next day.

On the first day we only checked in at the hostel and grab a food to eat. We spent 2 days on Frankfurt later on we traveled for Erfurt with bus and it takes 3 hours. When I arrived the view of Erfurt city took my breath away, the city was very beautiful, it had a very good atmosphere, the weather was nice for me, and the view was astonishing. I had fallen in love with Erfurt City the moment I arrived, the classic old building also makes me felt like we are back in time. The hostel that we were staying was very nice, it was very comfy and feels like home, we got our own kitchen for us to cook and the room was crazy spacious. But we got fined because we forgot to put some of the cover for the bed and that was kind of stupid actually, because we are very tired from the trip we slept right away. Our lecturer took us for a trip around Erfurt city and it was amazing, the scenery just live up to my expectation but after that the next day is our first day of workshop.
JEYHAN KATTREZA
It was on November 16 2017, the start of our trip for workshop in Germany. The three of us, me, Nadia Gissma, and Ivan Akbar traveled earlier than the rest of team because we are also the group that will came back to Indonesia earlier than the rest. We met up at Soekarno Hatta International airport at 2 PM. Our flight was scheduled at 17.30 so we have plenty of time to spare before we went to the waiting room. Some of our friends went to the airport just to say goodbye, they traveled for 6 hours and only met us just like for 15 minutes. At 17.30 We board the plane and had good flight from Jakarta to Doha, and we waited for the other groups to arrive for 9 hours in Doha airport. After waiting for 9 hours they finally arrived and we are ready for the next flight. Finally we arrived in Frankfurt, Germany after 24 hours for my groups because of the long transit but we had a good rest.

An abandoned area next to Erfurt Train station has no activity in it. In a glance, it seems to be lifeless. That is true if we only refer life to humans. But with all the wild plants inside, actually the area is full of life. When people abandoned the site and the buildings, nature steps in their place. And now after all those “lifeless” years, we proposed a design for the site, one that we hope can bring more life into it. Some old buildings are preserved so with some new buildings we created a contrast between them. The city networks and the fact that this site is located beside the train station are also considered in the proposal, so this area can blend with it’s surroundings.

Despite of its abandoned condition, the site still contains life in it. It was the wild greeneries that grow all over the places and also on the brick buildings within the site. So this phenomena became our main concept in our design. With brick and moss as our found objects, we wanted to integrate the buildings with greeneries, as well as creating a contrast between the dinamyc flow of people and greeneries with the static buildings. These two goals are achieved by designing a vast green cage over the building and continuing train station’s plaza all the way through the site and then connects it to a park at the north of the site.
73
The contrast is created not only by adding greeneries but also by differentiating the material between the old buildings and the new ones.
The landscape design is using organic forms to create a more dinamyc public space outside the buildings.
The green cage covering all the buildings from one end to the other, tying them up together.

JOURNAL Day 0 – EXPLORING ERFURT One day before the workshop begin, we explored Erfurt with our professors. The first place we visited was the main campus of FHE where the first day of workshop will be held. After that we went to the architecture faculty building. The building was closed so we only looked from the outside. Then we took a walk through the streets of Erfurt. The streets was really nice that the walking felt so enjoyable. Erfurt is a small city so that this exploration already covered almost all parts of the city.
Day 3 – EXCURSION TO JENA I, Arne, and Alex were the only team members that could join excursion to Jena. While waiting for the bus arrives at the landscape architecture faculty, Anton took us the Indonesian students to see a green house and some plants which the faculty had. We visited an ongoing project that took place right next to the Jena train station. We also visited some housing projects in Jena which are using used millitary buildings. I got a lot of information from Arne about Germany, how it classifies the cities’ sizes, the habits of the students, and also his opinion on Erfurt. In the afternoon, Wei joined us and then we discused a little bit about how the functions will be placed inside the site. Day 4 – WORKSHOP The only full day work in the workshop. We were taking too much time in thinking about technical criterias in the design that we forgot to implement our concept to the design. After the professors gave some critic, we created our concept as fast as possible because the sun was about to set soon. We revised every drawings, added some details on the landscape, and finally put them all in one paper. While I was creating the perspective drawing, Rajko taught me some techniques in editing the pictures. Thanks to him the process finished faster. We printed the poster and then in the night two students of Erfurt gave presentation about their latest projects. Day 5 - FINAL PRESENTATION Rajko and Alex couldn’t come that day. So it was only me, Mario, Arne, and Wei. Our team was the last to present our design. After getting some critics from the professors, we came to realization that the concept has some disadvantages like the high cost and lack of function.

Day 2 –PRESENTATION Wei took some moss from the site in Tuesday morning as an addition to our team’s found objects. Then with those object we created a scenario that depicts the current condition of the site. We documented it in the photo room (They have a special room only for taking pictures of objects). We listed the phenomenons we found weird, irritating, and interesting in the site. Rajko did all the visualization, and he did really great. We’ve never expected that we would get positive commentaries on our presentation especially on our found objects.

“The site seems left and forgotten, separated from the development of Erfurt. JOURNAL Day 1 – 20 November 2017
Although the workshop is only 5 days, the journey started two months before workshop; from the very first ITB delegate meeting to the production of this workshop publication. This is my first time meeting and got the chance to know 14 other friends from other departments. It took us almost 2 months to prepare visa, travel route plans, buying tickets, hotel booking and other preparations. What I like the most about the preparation is the informal sharing session in the evenings on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and Heritage Development prepared by few of our friends. It really showed that all of us were really eager to learn and prepare ourselves for the workshop.
•First day of workshop, we were welcomed by the school representatives and immediately arranged into teams which should have different disciplines. Me and Kirin met Alex and Marcus which were looking for teammattes and immediately became a group. Both of them are Architectural Master Students. Later on Jonas (Architecture) and Chao (Landscape) joined. •Visiting the city planning gallery of Erfurt and being explained about the city development by Prof. Gruber using the physical city model. •For the second task of found object we decided to go with old window frame. •Our group were having discussion on the studio instead of the space provided by the university since it was so crowded, I got a chance to meet other architectural master students from FHE also.
Since most of us haven’t been in Germany, we have no idea of what to prepare for the coming journey but we were lucky that we met friends from FHE who came to ITB for Bambuloka workshop. Our FHE friends helped us by giving gist of Erfurt, university, the town and the food before we went there. We really really appreciated our friends who helped us along the journey; Vicky, Dirra, Yogi, Halfie, Mala, Fuad, Dea, and many others.
Day 2 – 21 November 2017
The reason I joined this workshop is not only on the project but also to observe and to learn the teaching approach of the professors in Germany. I quite like how they respond with the student works and how they see potential in every proposal and encourage them to explore the idea. I also like how they appreciate the design process and also how they guide the student. This might be a way for me to experience and learn as part of my preparation for my future academic and career journey.
•Trip to Jena and visited the city planning agency of Jena. We were shown some development standards and some projects that are still being developed in Jena. •We were brought strolling around the city and visited one site that is still being developed that belongs to the city. The site is located near the old train station.
Day 5 – 24 November 2017 •Final presentation of Task 2 – Woodtopia •During the presentation we got quite the attention from the professor and audiences as they asked several things about our concept. •After all presentation ended, we were interviewed by the local journalist about our concept and what we intended to do with the site. •Working on Task 2, we came out with the idea of Woodtopia – which later became our main concept.

The workshop itself is simple yet there are so many things to be learned. Working a project with counterparts from different department, countries that has different way of thinking and different language feels almost like a mini international multidisciplinary studio. In my team, there are teammates from 3 different study areas; architecture, landscape, urban design made of 4 different nationalities; Indonesian, German, Malaysian, and Chinese, 5 languages; English, Indonesia, German, Malay and Mandarin. Every data that is to be discussed were translated from one language to another but the good thing about our team is we were always thinking in the same page. Whenever one of us proposed an idea and the others will spark more ideas and added more details into it.
•First task of presentation. We found the space was so seclusive, hidden and despite being abandoned, it is home for some living creatures, such as vegetation. So we decided to go with the hidden and vegetation as our preliminary concept. The old window frame / brick has already aged, but it is still durable. We use that as a metaphor for our adaptive reuse concept for the old warehouse building. •We prepared 2 A1 sheets, we made collage for the first one and the second one is filled with preliminary concept about the urban tactics and thesis statement.

Here we are exploring the city where modern school of architecture was born; Bauhaus. Such a beautiful city, so instagramable, with great history. we can strolling around whole city centre, but too bad weather wasn’t so friendly. Lesson loearned number one “always prepare for the worst condition of our trip”

For us, it’s a city that represent the history of Germany. We saw a painful past and the rememberance and traces their history. We saw the contrast of development between the west and the east. And we saw how politics and history can change the direction of development. It’s nice place to learn urban development and architecture design by looking the past and by visioning the future.

ROTTERDAM
Rotterdam was razed by WWII and it was rebuild by ingenuity and great vision. We could see how the redevelopment integrated old structure, contemporary construction, water-sensitive urban design, and spreading pocket park continually ever since. It’s great city for every discipline to learn.

Frankfurt is a hectic finance and business city, such as Jakarta which the city composed by glass, concrete and steel skyscrapers. It also provides remarkable green open spaces and well-developed riverside area to stimulate urban interaction. It might be busy place to travel but it nice place to learn about urban activity.

THE TEAM
Within five days of workshop, we learned how to describe fascinating, irritating and strange things about a building, place or an object. We learned how to see potentials of a certain area. We learned how to relate ourselves with an object, to relate an object to where it came from. We learned how to explore the unlimited possibilities of our understanding about our site into development concept. We learned how to work with people from different departments, different countries who speaks different language. We learned how to make friends. We would like to thank ITB and FHE for giving us the opportunity to be part of the program. We also would like to thank the professors and lecturers of both ITB and FHE for the guidance and encouragement along our workshop journey. Not forgetting our friends in Erfurt for the warm hospitality and also for helping us a lot from the day of our arrival in Germany. This workshop was great opportunity for us to learn and experience different kind of new knowledge and environment. Even though it was just five days, the journey from preparation to post workshop took about two months. Its not only about the knowledge, it is also about friendship and also getting to know ourselves and to let ourselves grow beyond our comfort zone in a completely new environment. Working with FHE counterparts was a wonderful experience for us and we hope that this friendship will grow into future collaboration as professionals or academicians. Nur Syakirin Saharom Editor

Can a found object determine the possible future of a place with a historic context? This book is a compilation of the outcomes resulted from dialogues between students of different backgrounds, schools, disciplines, and countries, brainstorming about the possible architectural, landscape and urban intervention of an abandoned site that was once part of the Erfurt main station.
