ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Our academic programs mirror the changing landscape of today’s fast-paced, evolving business world. A Barney degree isn’t standard—it’s designed with the needs and interests of our students in mind. With eight undergraduate programs, four master’s degrees, five dual-degree graduate programs, and eleven postgraduate certificate programs, you’ll find a path to your passion.

FACULTY AND HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Our faculty are academic leaders and practitioners in their fields, bringing concepts and materials to life through case studies and innovative approaches to analytics, marketing, and more. Hands-on learning experiences are the cornerstone of our approach to business education, which is why all Barney students complete at least one internship in their field of study prior to graduation.

FACILITIES

Much like our ever-evolving curriculum, our facilities keep pace with the needs of our students, providing state-of-the-art, high-tech learning spaces that match today’s modern business world. In 2019, we added 10,000 square feet of space—and renovated another 1,300 square feet—in Auerbach Hall, home of the Barney School of Business. This enhanced learning environment allows our students to gain understanding and familiarity with business through experiential learning that mirrors real-word business settings.

Prajapati worked on the learning project developed by Barney and CVS Health, including a case competition where competitors must develop innovative alternatives specific to the LGBTQ+ community, leading to better access to health care. This experience has been very beneficial to him as an international student.

ACCOUNTING

Whether you wish to pursue a career in public accounting, managerial accounting, or financial management, an accounting degree from the Barney School will prepare you for success in this interrelated field. Through theory and practice, you’ll graduate with an unmatched understanding of the key role accounting plays in financial analysis, operations management, and information technology. The demand for professional accountants is predicted to grow 10 percent by 2026— faster than the average for all other occupations—and you will leave prepared to enter this growing field with mastery and confidence.

NICOLE SANCHEZ [SPOTLIGHT]

Nicole Sanchez ’22, M’23 is an accounting major in the 3+1 program with a minor in international studies. In summer 2022, she worked as an external audit intern at PwC, where she provided business advice to a variety of PwC clients, including international entities. Nicole has since received a full-time job offer from PwC following her graduation.

The Barney School has provided me with extensive resources to help me be the best student I could be. From library websites and exclusive subscriptions to tutors and phenomenal professors, there is no shortage of resources and assistance for every student.”

SAMUEL COATES

Samuel Coates ’22, M’23, a 3+1 business analytics and managerial economics major, has made a name for himself at UHart and beyond. After successful completion of the CVS Health Learning Project, he obtained an internship with PayFlex where he put his knowledge to the test in a real-world setting. Focusing on his academics is essential, but he also makes time for other activities. Specifically, UHart’s STRIDE peer mentoring program helped give Coates the confidence necessary to take on the many challenges he had as an incoming student. Through this connection, he was eventually advised to join the Barney Leadership Council, where he shared similar academic goals with his peers. Now, he gives back by teaching current first-year students smart goals that will pave the way for a successful college experience.

BUSINESS ANALYTICS AND MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS

In an increasingly competitive, global job market, businesses are looking for new hires who have a strong business education grounded in data analytics, economics, and business administration—the unique combination this major provides. Through a diverse, growing selection of electives, we encourage our students to design a program of study that matches their career goals as a data scientist, business analyst, consultant, and more. A degree in business analytics and managerial economics can take you wherever you wish, with many of our graduates going on to work at top companies like Aetna, Cigna, The Hartford, and Travelers— all right in our backyard!

FINANCE

Our graduates are proof that a background in finance opens countless opportunities in today’s business world. Built on a foundation in corporate finance, investments, portfolio management, and international finance, our major prepares students to explore more specialized areas such as entrepreneurial finance, money and banking, portfolio management, and real estate finance. With valuable and versatile skills, students are prepared for lucrative careers in governmental or business consulting, stock and bond trading, banking, or international business. A degree in finance is also advantageous for students who wish to pursue graduate work in economics, business, public administration, law, and international trade, among many others!

REENA ODEDRA

Before Reena Odedra ’22 graduated with a degree in finance and risk management & insurance from the Barney School of Business, she received a job offer from Travelers. She is working as a pricing analyst within Traveler’s Product Management Development Program having learned about the opportunity by attending Barney’s Corporate Visit Day as a first-year student. The Barney School put Odedra in just the right place to immerse herself in the study of risk management, finance, and insurance, setting her up to secure the position even before graduating.

SEAN COONEY

Sean Cooney ’22 graduated from the Barney School of Business with a degree in management and a minor in marketing. He has moved to the state of Washington to work in Amazon’s retail undergraduate program. He was hired before graduation and believes his time at UHart provided real-life experience in preparation for the workforce. The curriculum in the classroom, blended with experiential learning and internships, set Cooney up for success with Amazon.

MANAGEMENT

Well-rounded, critical thinking managers are key to the success of any business, regardless of size or industry. At the Barney School, we prepare students to become business leaders equipped with the necessary academic and experiential training to bring a keen knowledge of people, teams, and organization to any company. Through a comprehensive degree program that tackles the fundamental principles of organizations, the nature and capabilities of people, how to function well in a team, and the methods involved in analyzing and solving managerial problems, our graduates leave ready to lead marketing, human resources, finance, sales, and other departments in for-profit and nonprofit businesses. And, with the number of management jobs expected to increase by 8 percent in the next few years, the opportunities in this diverse field are only growing!

MARKETING

A degree in marketing, one of our most popular business majors, will allow you to explore a career in fields such as sales, advertising and promotions, retail, market research, and market analysis in organizations large or small, domestic or global, corporate or nonprofit. A marketing degree includes core business classes in all areas of forprofit and nonprofit companies, taking a deeper dive into your preferred marketing field with more specialized classes. Courses in digital marketing, international marketing, marketing communications, retailing, and services marketing allow you to tailor your degree to your own professional goals and desired career path. Our graduates have gone on to pursue successful careers as media buyers, marketing managers, public relations specialists, brand managers, and other positions that require the creativity and exceptional communication skills that a Barney degree provides.

CHRISTINE YE

Christine Ye is an associate professor of marketing at the University of Hartford. She holds a PhD in marketing from Florida State University, a master’s degree in statistics from Yale University, and a bachelor’s degree in marketing (minor in math) from Indiana University. Her research focuses on understanding the role of trust in a relationship between a business and a customer, particularly in the domain of e-commerce and corporate social responsibility. Her articles appear in well-regarded marketing journals including the Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Marketing Education, and Psychology & Marketing.

SPORTS MANAGEMENT

At the Barney School, we’ll equip you with the skills you need to make a positive impact on the sports industry. In addition to the analytical, managerial, and hands-on skills you’ll learn, you will gain vast knowledge of sports economic trends and risk mitigation, as well as the legal and financial frameworks in the sports industry. Our sports management program prepares graduates for a career in sports marketing, athletics administration, sales, event operations, facility management, community relations, social media, and more.

This unique program offers a variety of sportsrelated electives within our other colleges at the University—meaning you can tailor your academic experience to your specific interests through projects and internships. We also leverage existing relationships with local sports businesses, providing you with a deeper understanding of the broad sports career opportunities that exist.

ACCELERATED BUSINESS PROGRAMS

3+1

If you’re looking for an accelerated path to the workforce, look no further. Our 3+1 program is an opportunity to earn an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in just four years, putting you in a position to start your career sooner. Through an accelerated schedule that includes Summerterm and Winterterm classes, the 3+1 program can be paired with any of our seven undergraduate majors to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. With an undergraduate degree under your belt in just three years, you’ll immediately move into a full-time MBA, or MS in Accounting and Taxation. The entire 3+1 program is facilitated by an advisor to support you throughout the completion of your degrees, and the company of a learning community of other students on the same accelerated path.

If the 3+1 program doesn’t work for your schedule, please consider our accelerated 4+1 option. You can earn a bachelor’s degree in four years and then gain direct admission into the master’s program where you can earn an MBA or MSAT in just one year.
