Postgraduate study

An undergraduate degree from the University of Huddersfield could help you take your first steps into an exciting career. You can choose to study a subject that you are interested in from a wide variety of degrees.

Whether you’re looking to continue on from undergraduate level studies or build up specialist knowledge and new skills, we offer a whole range of postgraduate programmes to ensure you achieve your goals.

Courses that offer a placement year give you the chance to get out in the real world and experience employment while you’re still studying. Classes generally take place during the daytime and there are a small number of courses which may also have some evening classes too.

Bachelor’s degree A full-time Bachelor’s degree normally takes three years. Lots of our degrees also give you the chance to take a placement or ‘sandwich’ year to build up your work experience. That would mean that your course would usually take four years in total. Upon successful completion, you’ll achieve a qualification title: Bachelor of Arts – BA(Hons) Bachelor of Engineering – BEng(Hons) Bachelor of Law – LLB Bachelor of Music – BMus(Hons) Bachelor of Science – BSc(Hons).

Top-up If you’ve already got a Foundation degree or a qualification like an HND, then a Top-up course gives you the chance to build on that and study for a full Honours level degree. It takes one year full-time and it is subject to you meeting the entry criteria.

Integrated Master’s degree An Integrated Master’s degree gives you the opportunity to combine undergraduate and postgraduate study for some courses. Courses last four years, or five years if you spend a year on a placement. The first two years are normally the same as the equivalent BSc or BEng course. You’ll be expected to do well each year, with some courses requiring you achieve a particular grade. As you progress through the course, you will get the opportunity to specialise in subject areas that particularly interest you. At the end of the course you’ll earn a Master’s level degree. We offer a range to choose from: Master of Engineering – MEng Master of Chemistry – MChem Master of Computing – MComp Master of Science – MSci Master of Pharmacy – MPharm.

As part of our vibrant postgraduate community you’ll have plenty of opportunity to network and build friendships.

Taught degrees On a taught postgraduate degree, you’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical work. Studying at Master’s level will involve completing advanced specialist study in a particular subject or profession and usually contains a taught element as well as a supervised dissertation or research project.

Research degrees On a postgraduate research degree, you’ll work independently on a research topic of your own choice. You’ll be assigned a minimum of one main supervisor, who’ll be engaged in research in the relevant discipline(s) to ensure that the direction and monitoring of your progress is informed by up-to-date knowledge and developments. You’ll also receive support from skills tutors and support groups.

Our courses

Undergraduate study

Fitting studies around you Most of our taught postgraduate degrees and all of our research degrees can be studied full-time or part-time and some courses offer distance learning. You can also consider undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma; these qualifications are steps toward a Master’s degree, are internationally recognised and can be built upon in the future. If you require a Student visa to study in the UK you will not be able to study part-time with this visa. However, if you have another type of visa that permits study in the UK, part-time study may be possible for you.

Master’s courses with placement Some postgraduate degrees also offer the opportunity to undertake an additional 6month placement at the end of the 12-month programme. This enables students with limited experience to put the skills and techniques developed throughout the Master’s degree into practice. Visit pages 122-123 for the eligible courses.

Our research projects database enables you to search our research degrees and find specific research projects associated with that degree. Discover more at research.hud.ac.uk
