The UNM CKI Board Luke Kachelmeier

Luke is a Senior studying Applied Math, with minors in Computer Science and Psychology. He loves algebra, calculus, and even trigonometry, but graphing is where he draws the line. He enjoys serving the community and socks. He's been in the K family for six years and always looks forward to adding another year.

Lexi Velasquez Lexi is studying Voice and Spanish with an Honors designation. She loves to watch musicals (she's seen over 200), workout, sing, serve the community, swing dance, and read dictionaries and poetry in her free time.

Vanessa Tsai Vanessa is majoring in Business Administration with a dual concentration in Information Systems and Marketing. She loves to post Snapchat stories of food, because who doesn't like to see pictures of food? She also enjoys pandas and thinks they are amazing.

Alexis Mendez Alexis is a Sophomore majoring in Business with a concentration in Accounting and a minor in Sociology. She is into corny jokes and is always up for a good laugh. She loves to quote movies and does it quite often.

Hannah Broyles Hannah is a Senior studying Speech and Hearing Sciences with a minor in Political Science. Falling in line with other college students on campus, she loves to binge watch Netflix. Currently, she is emotionally invested in 'New Girl' and anxiously waiting for Season 3 of 'The Crown."

Ellen Guest Our friend and mentor. Ellen has been the UNM CKI Kiwanis advisor for 9 years.

Habitat for Humanity At the beginning of April, UNM CKI went and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. That weekend, they worked alongside a dedicated and hardworking crew, helping finish a house that was started at the beginning of the year. The day included fun, fellowship, hard work, and overcoming fears.

Roadrunner Food Bank and Casa Esperanza- Gala for Hope The following weekend, we all spent the weekend volunteering at Roadrunner Food Bank and Casa Esperanza. At Roadrunner, we spent the morning sorting produce into packaged and unpackaged foods. We welcomed our new friend, Spuddy (10lbs). In the end, we helped sort food that will be delivered to over 8,000 New Mexicans. In the evening, we all headed to the Albuquerque Hotel and volunteered with Casa Esperanza at their Gala for Hope. It was filled with a 50s themed atmosphere and a night of giving back to the organization that gives so much. UNM helped facilitate the silent and live auction. At the end of the auction, the guests donated over $10,000 for a new New Mexican inspired sculpture. This will stand at the opening entrance, welcoming guests and patients to Casa Esperanza.

Watermelon Mountain Ranch Watermelon Mountain Ranch is the largest no-kill shelter in New Mexico. With over 10 acres, UNM and the K-Kids helped with property beautification by picking up trash and weeding the area. The last 30 minutes were spent walking the dogs at the shelter and as we all know, Sarah loves dogs. She was truly in puppy heaven and describes the day as truly wonderful.

Renaissance Fair UNM volunteered alongside our fellow Kiwanians during the Renaissance Fair. We helped direct cars to the appropriate parking spot and guests to the front entrance. All in all, we ended the day on a good note and a few sunburns.

Recognizing Our Members Our members are fantastic, they attend weekly meetings, service projects, and school. Yet somehow they all manage to enjoy other extracurricular and academic projects on campus.

Sara Al-Midany She has recently been accepted into the UNM Paramedic school and got elected by the UNM undergraduate student body to be a part of ASUNM. Sara is also the District Governor for the 2018-2019 CKI year.

Jenn Salas and Lexi Velasquez Jenn and Lexi participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Conference (UROC). They were able to work on a research project of their choice through an on-campus mentorship through El Puente Research Fellowship. Both of them attended weekly meetings with their groups and individually compiled a research project. They spent the day at UROC presenting it to a panel of judges and later that evening enjoyed a nice casual dinner with their mentors.
