The city is overwhelmed by unstable, ambiguous, un-permanent changings brought by urban installations which, more than any other intervention, strongly alter the metropolitan landscape. Light City, Lucio Altarelli, 2006

The selected projects presented in this booklet are mainly light, temporary, partecipatory, relational spatial devices. Their nature is between the installation and the performance, the playground and the event. They are microtransformations amplifying the more controversial, banal and anonimous quality of the places in their relations with the city. Each of the projects suggests a peculiar urban vision. For that reason there isn’t a common functional programme to respect but an interpretation, a critical point of view to be unfolded. They share another basic idea: figurative qualities, compositions, structural aspects needs to be grounded on a strong “relational” reflection: how do an installation help people discovering hidden opportunities? In the Studio 2008 / 2009 we focused on the space underneath the so called Viadotto di Corso Francia crossing the Olimpic Village in Rome. The site is a really no man’s land just few steps away the inner city, a forgotten space where nobody knows how to operate. Our investigations have been always critical and sometimes even paradoxical: paradox helps infact a deeper counterintuitive understanding of the reality. We have not negleted even exaggeration and “what if” creative approaches. In that way the common sense has been usefully challenged and students patecipating the studio will push forward their design intentions with more awarness and open mind.

CITY TUBE Marco Strippoli - Dario Loscialpo It’s a suspended device where you can live kinetic experiences: the shine of the reflecting skin and the shadows casted are perceived changeable because of the rolling of the metal-made short cilinders.

top city Licia Ugolini - Donatella Pavia -Davide Libonati It’s a peculiar observatory over the viaduct where the view is guided and directed on special spots around by an ever changing (in size) semitransparent skin.

dispersed Hélène Degousée – Agathe Rosa – Romain Cascio A phisical and sensorial playground to be touched and experienced: a kind of urban jungle to reactivate the social dimension of the place.

fake plastic tree Bruna Basegni - Margherita Cardoso Plastic garden for unbalanced lovers. A snake like dispenser of hallucinatory pills for a visionary experience. An exhibition like a dreaming dimension.

Her green plastic watering can For her fake chinese rubber plant In the fake plastic earth That she bought from a rubber man In a town full of rubber Plans to get rid of itself It wears her out It wears her out It wears her out It wears her out She lives with a broken man A cracked polystyrene man who just crumbles and burns He used to do surgery for girls in the eighties But gravity always wins And it wears him out It wears him out It wears him out It weeeeaaaa She looks like the real thing She tastes like the real thing My fake plastic love But I can't help the feeling I could blow through the ceiling If I just turn and run And it wears me out It wears me out It wears me out It wears me out If i could be who you wanted If i could be who you wanted all the time All the time Fake plastic tree by Radiohead

INFINITE MIRRORING Mihai Vanca – Christian Pontis – Ionut Mitroescu The water became a gate towards another parallel dimension where everything is possible: you just need a minimal gesture to trigger the poetry.

live/wire Giada Spera - Flavia Verre Flexible and adaptable. Dense but rarefied. Pople can transform the space according to the activity to be performed grasping more or less wires.

paliMpsest Alexander Golinski - RaphaĂŤl Lacroix - Stremsdoerfer Alexis The flat land under the viaduct becomes tridimensional, the pavement grows: a game of textures and disjointed plates for an unexpected landscape.

sensitive object Charles Mariambourg - Sylvain Bourreau - Leslie de Gasquet Interactive and invisible devices embedded into the structures react to the traffic jam, to the people strolling underneath and to some weather conditions: the viaduct become an ironic living beeing.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannh채user Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears ... in rain. Time to die Blade Runner

sit com Giulia Peruzzi - Stella Passerini - Benedetto Turcano A tangle of pipes fills the volume underneath the viaduct hosting many functions: this structure becomes a tridimensional square where many activities can be performed.

tensegrity Giulia Giampiccolo - Giorgia Nardi A perfect equilibrium of very few elements to recreate a fascinating tensional integrity structure.

orto city Sandra Humanes - Eduardo Nu単ez Icons of consumerism cross the space setting a dinamic pop art inspired scenograpy.

SCENOGRAPHIES Giuseppe Mastropaolo - Emanuele Mastrangioli Huge translucent tissues are moved on trails to set urban lounges. Projections and colors animate the space according to the activity performed.

shangai Patrizia Sodini - Roberta Ragonese An artificial bamboo jungle reacting to the wind and other forces. Within this kind of space you move freely to find your way.

URBAN ROOMS Filippo Decamillis - Stefania Ricciu Intimate rooms connected each others through technological devices: an interactive landscape of projections and sounds reacting to the people choices.
