Human Development Report 2019
Beyond Income, Beyond Averages, Beyond Today - Inequalities in Human Development in the 21st Century United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Inequalities in human development are a roadblock to achieving the 2030 Agenda. They are not just about disparities in income and wealth. They cannot be accounted for simply by using summary measures of inequality that focus on a single dimension. And they will shape the prospects of people that may live to see the 22nd century. This report explores inequalities in human development by going beyond income, beyond averages and beyond today. It asks what forms of inequality matter and what drives them, recognizing that pernicious inequalities are generally better thought of as a symptom of broader problems in a society and economy.

Foreign Direct Investment and Sustainable Development in International Investment Governance United Nations Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a principal means of financing the 2030 Agenda. FDI’s potential contributions to sustainable development in Asia-Pacific can only be realized if the right conditions and policies are in place and if both the quantity and quality of FDI to, from, and within the region increase. This requires not only identifying and prioritizing FDI projects in key sustainable development sectors - such as renewable energy, education, health, water and sanitation, etc. - but also developing and operationalizing FDI policies and legal and regulatory frameworks at national and international levels that maximize the sustainable development potential of FDI in local economies. Best Practice Guidance for Effective Methane Recovery and Use from Abandoned Coal Mines United Nations Coal production, transportation, storage and use account for roughly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas with a 100-year global warming potential 25 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2) and a 100-year global temperature potential 6-fold greater than CO2, once released from coal seams in which it is trapped creates a number of problems even after cessation of mining activities. Following mine closure, methane emissions decrease, but do not stop completely. This publication presents recommended principles and standards for effective methane recovery and use from abandoned coal mines.

Pathways to Sustainable Energy
Accelerating Energy Transition in the UNECE Region United Nations Energy underpins the development of economies and most of the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda. The energy sector plays a critical role in finding solutions for both sustainable development and climate change mitigation. Since the universal agreement on the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including the goal on sustainable energy SDG 7 in 2015, countries have commenced with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. However, at this stage, there is a gap between the agreed energy and climate targets and the strategies and systems that are being put in place today to achieve them. Accelerated and more ambitious strategies and policies will be needed to fill the persistent gaps to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

How Natural Gas Can Support the Uptake of Renewable Energy United Nations There is a strong medium-to-long-term future for gas so long as it wholeheartedly embraces the energy transition and partners with renewables to produce carbon-free products, notably hydrogen, whilst embracing carbon capture and storage (CCS). Gas has several key advantages. It is highly flexible and can be used for heating, cooling, cooking, waste disposal and transportation as well as feedstock for chemicals, fertilisers and pharmaceutical products. Moreover, throughout most of the UNECE area there are already extensive distribution networks that enable gas to be transferred both across borders and within member states. These networks can be adapted to carry hydrogen either mixed in with natural gas or as self-contained systems. They can also be used to distribute CO2.

Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2020 Towards Sustainable Economies United Nations Economic policymaking in Asia-Pacific developing countries has long been focused on maximising economic growth, given the imperatives of poverty reduction and job creation. There is no gainsaying that there is a strong case for focusing on economic growth but when this comes at costs that undermine the sustainability of growth itself over the long term, it is time to ask questions. This is evident in the region, where decades of high growth have transformed the socioeconomic landscape – lifting a billion people out of extreme poverty and raising living standards. However, such growth has been accompanied by growing inequality of income and opportunity and is beginning to endanger the well-being of future generations.

Inclusive Business and Social Enterprises in South-East Asia United Nations As awareness of Inclusive Business (IB) has increased, countries have sought to understand how IBs complement other efforts aimed at harnessing the potential of the private sector for development. Depending on the socioeconomic context of each country, the IB agenda has found synergies with the promotion of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and social enterprises (SEs), including measures to promote impact investment and corporate social responsibility (CSR). These synergies represent opportunities to enhance the promotion of IB by building on existing policy frameworks focusing on MSMEs, SEs and CSR. Leveraging the existing frameworks has allowed countries to move faster on the IB agenda. Governments can encourage the emergence, expansion and scale-up of IB models.

World Survey on the Role of Women in Development 2019 Why Addressing Women’s Income and Time Poverty Matters for Sustainable Development UN Women This publication focuses on the ways in which the nexus of time and income poverty shapes or constrains the lives of women. It argues that addressing this double bind is critical to achieve sustainable development, particularly in low-income contexts, and presents an integrated policy agenda for doing so. It finds large gender gaps in extreme poverty rates especially between the ages of 25-34, coinciding with the phase in the life course of family formation and child-rearing, during which women and their households face increased expenses associated with having children, while also experiencing constraints on the time they have available for engaging in paid work.

Global Education Monitoring Report 2020 Inclusion and Education - All Means All
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) This publication assesses progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on education and its ten targets, as well as other related education targets in the SDG agenda. It addresses inclusion in education, drawing attention to all those excluded from education, because of background or ability. The report is motivated by the explicit reference to inclusion in the 2015 Incheon Declaration, and the call to ensure an inclusive and equitable quality education in the formulation of SDG 4, the global goal for education. It reminds us that, no matter what argument may be built to the contrary, we have a moral imperative to ensure every child has a right to an appropriate education of high quality.

World Wildlife Crime Report 2020 Trafficking in Protected Species
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) The report presents the latest assessment of global trends in wildlife crime. It includes discussions on illicit rosewood, ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales, live reptiles, tigers and other big cats, and European eel. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that wildlife crime is a threat not only to the environment and biodiversity, but also to human health and economic development and security. Zoonotic diseases – those caused by pathogens that spread from animals to humans - represent up to 75% of all emerging infectious diseases. Trafficked wild species and the resulting products offered for human consumption escape any hygiene or sanitary control, and therefore pose even greater risks of infection.

International Trade Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean 2019 Adverse Global Conditions Leave the Region Lagging Further Behind United Nations The global trade performance in 2019 was the worst since the international financial crisis. This edition analyses that performance, as well as the mounting trade tensions and their repercussions for the region’s own trade. The heavy slowdown in global trade is the result of the build-up of trade barriers since 2018, as well as longer-standing factors, including weaker global demand, increasing import substitution in some economies, the smaller share of Chinese production going for export, the shrinking of global value chains and the emergence of new technologies that impact trade. Also highlighted is that trade has both positive and negative impacts on the environment.

Review of Sustainable Transport Connectivity in Asia and the Pacific 2019 Addressing the Challenges for Freight Transport United Nations Within the transport sector in Asia and the Pacific freight and logistics account for a significant portion of total energy use – in many countries upward of 40% – and a correspondingly large share of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, on account of economic development and population growth, the region is expected to face substantial increases in trade shares and, thus, freight volumes. Accordingly, some estimates suggest that in Asia, ton-kilometres from surface freight will increase by 261% from 2015 to 2050 accounting for over two-thirds of all surface freight globally. Against this background, the Review provides a data-supported overview and insight for policy makers. Publication Date: February 2020 ISBN: 9789211207989

There are reasons to believe that this simultaneous shutdown of economic and social activities has succeeded in pre-empting what could have become a disastrous global health crisis. But the shutdown is likely to have major economic consequences that remain difficult to assess.

COVID-19 and Ammunition Management - Challenges and Possible Responses United Nations This paper offers a preliminary analysis of the effects of COVID-19 (coronavirus) on the ammunition management sector in the spring of 2020. It raises key issues related to the risks associated with conventional ammunition through the implementation of relevant control and management measures. It argues that shifts in national priorities and reduced resources may affect overall international disarmament efforts by undermining the management of conventional ammunition, and potentially enhance the risks of accidental explosions and diversion. Ammunition management needs to remain a priority during and after COVID-19.
