Edito And you ... What do you feel every time you are arriving at your usual spot to do Stand Up Paddle? What do you feel when you go down the stairs from the beach towards the sand? How would you describe that first touch of water with your feet? Surely you have ever hit that cry of emotion to reconnect with our world, the one that disconnects us from everything and makes us be ourselves. At that moment, our body generates a series of components, which right now I don’t remember what they are, that produce pleasure and emotion in abundance. A chemical mix that makes you feel like a motorcycle. Well, if all this happens to you, you are on the right way... This sport is growing, a lot... When something grows so large, it can sometimes be difficult to go along with it, it can escape you and even lose it. The best of all is that your body sends you warning signals, so that you open your eyes and see where the current is and continue on this wave. Honesty, perseverance and love. I think they are the 3 pillars that keep us in the orbit of the SUP. And this new mag, which will help more than one understand that Up Suping is for ¨SUPers¨, is so intense that you will either love it or hate it. But better take your time to enjoy it. You will like it...like when you go down Stair 10 of Gijón smiling... Ladies and gentlemen…Welcome to Up#35!

If I could make a living off of adventure paddling instead of racing...

Up Suping

APP World Tour. PPG. April Zilg

Hi April! What a pleasure to SEE you in Up Suping…How are you? Great. With the appearance of Covid-19, everything has turned around. How is the return to your work activity and as an athlete in international SUP events being? My activities outside of paddling hasn’t slowed down much, before the pandemic started, I began a move across country from California back to North Carolina, and I’ve been pretty busy settling into a new home and getting business back on track. Competitions have been few and far between.

And you also recently had a great performance at the ICF World SUP Championship…are you happy for the results? The bronze medals in the Sprint and Technical races were my first ever medals at a World Championship event, so I’m thankful for that. However, I was able to see where I can adapt my training and improve for future events.

But to get great results, your body also has to be in good shape, and we know that you take great care of yourself. How and when have you started to lead a healthy diet and exercise life? I was a late bloomer. I didn’t start exercising, eating right, or paddling until I was 25 years old. Before that I couldn’t even run one mile without stopping and didn’t participate in any sports or fitness hobbies regularly. How does good nutrition and sports training influence Stand Up Paddle? Should we take more care of ourselves? You can’t get to a top level in paddling without balanced training and nutrition. I can always feel a big difference when I don’t follow as strict a diet or schedule. However, it’s important mentally to take breaks from being very disciplined all the time.

12

We really like the videos you publish with exercises and stretching for our body and we see that you have a vocation as a trainer. What is your technique or way of teaching all this to athletes? Proper push-pull balance is very important in every plane of movement to prevent injury. I set up proper workout sessions that are available in the PaddleNinja.com training platform. I’ve got a new lineup of exercises already done for this coming December on Instagram and YouTube and can’t wait to share them! What other sports do you do to combine it with Stand Up Paddle? I paddle my outrigger canoe a lot, and I also enjoy weightlifting.

We also remember your participation in the ISA World SUP in China with the USA Team. How was that experience? That was an extremely challenging race for me, as I got sick while traveling. This time was much better, probably in part because the airlines are so clean and disinfected for the pandemic! But also because I arrived early and adjusted to the time and was very careful with my health leading up to the event. In recent years, women’s Stand Up Paddle worldwide has grown a lot. But do you think there is still a lot of work to be done here? I think that as long as men and women are paid equally for equal efforts then the industry is doing the work that needs to be done.

13

SUP, paddling sports and adventure. If you put these three things together...What name would you give it and why? Umm, Fun? I love adventure paddling! If I could make a living off of adventure paddling instead of racing, I certainly would! I think that’s where the excitement is.

Hopefully, very soon we will see you in Spain rowing with us. What are your plans for these last months of the year? For the last few months of this year, I’m actually getting a head start on scheduling and training for next year. I’ve got a big product launch coming up in 2022 that I’ll have to work around, as well as a few key competitions that I’m really looking forward to. I’m not sure of international travel or competitions for the remainder of 2021, as things still seem to be in flux; but fingers crossed for a few events to finish 2021 strong! Thanks to… Salt Life, 404, Hippostick, Puakea Designs, Garmin, Paddle Ninja Stay up to date on my upcoming product launch, workouts, and competitions via my instagram @aprilzilg and my website aprilzilg.com !!! Thank you!!

Kurro Díaz

This year and getting records of participation in a SUP competition in our country, more than 260 riders paddling in the waters of Alicante in the edition of the Costa Blanca SUP Challenge 2021. And that also not only had a great appeal from being the Spanish Championship of Fesurfing, also the Spanish Cup and the Mediterranean Circuit. Triple reason not to miss this appointment.

CHALLENGE 2021 This event took place over two days at the facilities of the Costa Blanca Nautical Club in Alicante, where in addition to the races, we also had a SUP Village with the presence of major brands in the sector showing their products and even news. The high temperatures of september made an appearance throughout the weekend, with bright sunshine throughout all days.

As for the SUP Race competitions, developed during the second day of the event, they were super exciting. We must highlight the great work of the entire organization, which in its second consecutive edition hosting the Spanish Championship, has even surpassed the first; captained by Santi Cantó and his entire team. And with a huge audience present, how could it be otherwise.

The little ones started the Costa Blanca SUP Challenge 2021, with exciting races where these young promises take advantage of the opportunity to measure themselves against partners from different areas of Spain. Competition, sportsmanship and friendship! And taking into account that the Elite and SUB18 categories had to cover 16km, they did not take long to go out on the water, to avoid the high temperatures of the central hours of the day.

Nose insert for action camera.

After a spectacular start, where they can be reflected in the photos of Kurro Díaz or in the video images from the drone, after a few kilometres I can already see that the competition in these categories would be intense and very technical. The course offered different upwind, downwind and sidewind conditions… but the wind was not really strong; although it was very well used by most of the riders. It was very nice to see the dispute between Esperanza Barreras and Duna Gordillo, where the young woman from Mar Balear Port Adriano was in the wake of the Galician woman for many kilometres… proving that we will have Duna for a long time! As for the boys, exciting until the end as we are well accustomed to. The andalusians has govern the podium, with the new Spanish Champion Fernando Pérez and Antonio Morillo runner-up, ahead of the great Aaron Sánchez; all of them entering the finish line with little time difference. Finally, Esperanza Barreras managed to be the Spanish Champion in her category for the second consecutive year, ahead of Duna and Izaskun Martin del Campo. Lots of new names every year…it’s amazing! The SUB18s once again offered us a lot of show, especially between Manuel Hoyuela and Lucas Simoncelli who are very strong this year. The cantabrian, and by a very short margin of time, surpassed the majorcan rider, becoming the Spanish Champion in this category. Sergio Toledo, from Malaga, and with a great performance, closed the men’s SUB 18 podium. And of course, the girls were no less, with an intractable Sonia Caimari climbing to the top of the standings ahead of her teammate Aida Soberbio and Mar Bascuñana.

The Amateurs, SUB14 and SUB16 gathered a very high number of participants in this edition of the Costa Blanca SUP Challenge, where we once again see Iván de Frutos and Elene Etxeberría lead their categories in practically all the events in Spain so far this year, following very closely also to Alexia Soto and Miguel García, riders of the CMS Fesurfing League. Angel Ruizas and Bea Canudas were the winners of the amateur category.

As we said at the beginning of this article, times are changing and advancing. New faces in our sport herald a spectacular future, a material that evolves year after year and that desire to row that never ends. The Costa Blanca SUP Challenge 2021 has brought together SUP in all its aspects. A Spanish Championship that we will never forget.

Sylvenstein SUP

Valentin Ilichmann

The leisurely country roads through the valley resemble the eternal vastness of Canada. The Isar meanders through a wide valley surrounded by the Alps. Thus, the journey to our paddling spot is already worth a trip. The idyllic mountain lake glistens in the most beautiful shades of blue as we drive over the small pass next to the dam wall in my old VW bus. What an incredibly beautiful view of the Sylvenstein reservoir. You don’t realize at first glance that this is a reservoir that regulates the Isar River and its water levels to protect cities like Munich from flooding during snowmelt. In the car, our iSUP’s are well packed in the backpacks, a real route we have not thought about, we hope to enjoy the sunset from the water and also to get to places that are not so easy to reach from the road or the hiking trail. SUP is perfect for such adventures! We carry the backpacks with the boards down a small staircase through the woods to a gravel beach

Oliver Farys

It is a hot late summer day. On the shore where we pump up our boards people meet to swim and sunbath. A few other paddlers are also launching their boards here. After the boards are pumped up and we have adjusted the paddles to the right length, we are ready to go. I particularly like trips to Lake Sylvenstein because it can be reached so quickly from southern Munich and the little adventures you experience here still work after work. The lake lies like a fjord in front of us as we make our first paddle moves. Lake Sylvenstein can be divided into two parts. The place where the Isar flows into the lake and the inflow through the Walchenklamm. The Walchenklamm is a small tributary that winds through a narrow gorge. The water here is calm and extremely clear. The water surface glitters like a sapphire. On the bottom you can see huge old trees and stones forming a fascinating underwater world. The view while standing from our boards is incomparable, we can see our shadow on the bottom and have the feeling to float. Many fishes jump to the side when they catch sight of us. We even spot one or two really big pikes and some otters hiding in the bank. Flies buzz above the surface and the sun’s rays cast golden spots on the water. The moment is almost magical.

We paddle through the lake once from east to west and pass under the big highway bridge. Under the bridge, in the depths of the clear water, is an old village. Unfortunately it is too deep here to catch a glimpse of the old ruins. I quickly realize that we are getting closer to the mouth of the Isar River. The water is milky, bluer and the landscape around the lake opens up. We look at many small reed covered islands that are washed by the mountain river flowing into the lake. The river delta is very wide here. Again, the view from our SUP’s is worth its weight in gold, here too we discover old driftwood sticking up under the water. The shore is lined with old spruce trees. The colors of the forest are reflected in the bright water, what a great sight. The afternoon sun burns on the skin and we long for a cooling. That should be no problem here. In summer you can jump from the board into the water, but the lake with its clear meltwater from the mountains always remains a cooling and never really gets warm. Especially during dusk you can watch the fishermen from your SUP board as they catch a pike or two. While the setting sun slowly settles in the Isar valley and we follow the last warm rays until it is completely disappeared behind the mountains of the Bavarian foothills. What an impressive view.

SPAIN CHAMPIONSHIP SUP WAVES SPANISH CUP SUP RACE & BEACH RACE

ALL IN SUP OCTOBER 9-12

Up Suping

A. Laborda

The long-awaited first edition of the All In SUP Gijón, Stand Up Paddle or Paddle Surf event, had Long Distance races at Arbeyal beach and SUP Olas and Beach Race at San Lorenzo beach.

The second day began with the first rounds of the Spanish Open Men’s Wave Championship of the Spanish Surf Federation, where ¨SUPers¨ from different places of our country performed excellent manoeuvres and good scores with acceptable waves for the practice of this sport. where the Galician and current champion of Spain Guillermo Carracedo and the Andalusian Fernando Pérez stood out. The public was also able to enjoy a Beach Race competition, where the SUP Race boards made a cross over the waters of San Lorenzo beach and where the riders must cross different breakers and show their great skills in this discipline. The waves and porting generated a lot of action, with real final sprints in some categories. Esperanza Barreras, current champion of Spain, took the victory in the Elite female category, while on the part of the boys, it was the Cantabrian Manuel Hoyuela who took the victory in his corresponding category.

The 3rd day of the All In SUP Gijón competition decided the new SUP Olas 2021 champions of the Spanish Surfing Federation. Participants from all over Spanish geography who love Stand Up Paddle and waves did not fail this great national event. The waves of the beach of San Lorenzo did not fail today and offered a great show. Taking advantage of the high tide and the absence of wind in the early hours of the morning, the semifinals of the categories of SUP Waves male, female, junior and also LongSUP were disputed. The waves had potential and that made the scores in each heat higher than in the previous day, with more precise and safer manoeuvres. The finals were spectacular. Although the quality of the wave had deteriorated due to the northeast wind, the competitors knew how to take advantage of each of the waves. In the female category, the Canarian Iballa Ruano showed all her experience in this sport and took the title of Spanish SUP Waves Champion achieving the highest scores of the day in that category, ahead of Alazne Aurrekoetxea, Alba Alonso and Marina Loayza.

In the men’s category, the Galician Guillermo Carracedo had resounding and very consistent surfing in each race disputed, which earned him to once again proclaim himself Champion of Spain of SUP Waves. He was followed by competitors Oihan Aizpuru, Manuel Hoyuela and Alfonso Muñiz. There is a great present and future in this modality of Stand Up Paddle for these competitors. The junior or SUB18 category had a great participation in this Spanish Championship. We have been surprised by the high level of these competitors who in a very short time will make people talk around the world. The Cantabrian Manuel Hoyuela is living his best moment at a sporting level, obtaining a new victory in the All In SUP Gijón by proclaiming himself Junior Champion of Spain 2021 and achieving the highest scores in his category, ahead of Enrique Pérez, Ivan Puente and David García. We cannot forget the LongSUP category, where the asturian Alfonso Muñiz amazed all the attendees with a very elegant surfing and therefore the winner of this category, very close in scores to Jaime Morales, Antonio Morillo and Eduardo Gonzalez. On the part of the girls, Iballa Ruano has also shown to have a great performance in this category, climbing to the top of the podium ahead of Alazne Aurrekoetxea, Este Barreras, Bea Piñal and Fernanda López. With these competitions this first edition of the All In SUP Gijón concluded, with a great organization and with this great city of Asturias as the standard; that received the best SUP and wave athletes nationwide.

Montse Soléé ¨We were waiting for the heat to start and I was telling Iballa that when I was little I had my room lined with his posters¨ ...

Up Suping

Montse Solé

Hello Montse! I bet you have been in the water before answering this interview…right? Hi Nico! Well yes, I just got out of the water...Am I so predictable? (laughs) You put it on your Instagram profile: ¨Waterwoman and adrenaline lover¨. Describe to us everything that the sea and nature are offering you right now ... Easy...EVERYTHING! For me, the sea is peaceful and at the same time action. It recharges me with energy when I need it, sometimes I just go in with the SUP and sit down to admire nature, meditate and rest. Other times (most of them hehe) I need that adrenaline rush that it offers me and I look for the most sugary conditions to find it... In addition, I am super demanding and competitive with myself and the sea offers me the possibility of constantly challenging myself and improving myself. The truth is that when I have not been able to enter for a few days, because of the conditions or because of work, I feelt it emotionally. My people send me to the water when I’m in a bad mood hahaha. Hence, I have “mounted” my life to be able to enter every day. I can’t imagine what my life would be like without entering the sea.

Among the sports you doing are SUP Surf. Tell us how were your first waves and what are your favourite spots. I remember my first wave perfectly, if I close my eyes I see myself there...It must have been about 15 years ago. It was in Sant Pere Pescador, it is a very special place for me because it is where my passion for the sea was born. It is usually a spot of wind rather than waves, but sometimes the stars align and after a storm or specific conditions, if the sandbank is good, there are very cool glassy conditions. And that day it fit...Until then I had only windsurfed so I had never had direct contact with surfing. I fell in love with that feeling, so I got my first board shortly after and since then, I have not stopped chasing it and trying to feel that feeling again. I live in the Maresme and work in Barcelona, so my spots are usually Arenys, Vilassar or Masnou, depending on the conditions or else I already enter Barcelona if it catches me near work (surfing with the skyline of Bcn is beautiful). Then as soon as two or three days come together, I go up to the Basque Country or Cantabria. And what am I going to tell you...the place, the food, the people...I’m IN LOVE WITH THE NORTH (laughs). How was the experience in the Spanish Championship of Surfing by Autonomies in Galicia? Amazing, I loved it in every way. Internally with the national team, it was great, being able to share and live with the rest of the team and meet and learn from them was a super enriching experience that I hope to repeat soon. Then the organization, the place, the rest of the teams and obviously, the competition was quite a show. I take this opportunity to thank the Catalan Surf Federation for giving me this opportunity and counting on me. Already waiting for next year’s edition!

44

What does it feel like to be competing with the best riders in Spain? From Spain? And of the world! The first time in my life that I compete and I surfing in my heat against the 28 times world champion of Windsurf and 1 of SUP Surf, Iballa Ruano, my reference since when I was 4 years old I got on a windsurf board for the first time. ... We were waiting for the heat to start and I was telling him that when I was little I had my room lined with his posters (laughs) ... For me it is an opportunity to share waves with all those mega riders, there are level and very good vibes. Where I move, apart from the fact that there are usually not as good wave conditions as in other areas, there are very few girls who practice SUP Surf so it is difficult to have a benchmark to measure themselves to improve. We give you a paddle, a kite or a wing and we are sure that you will always put on the same happy face. How much physical and psychological satisfaction does practising all these sports give you? Yes, the truth is that I do not care what I get into the water with, each of these sports is a challenge and the opportunity to improve and compete with myself day by day. For me it is very important to be in a good physical and psychological level to put myself in according to what conditions, it is very important to never lose respect for the sea. But then it’s super satisfying when you manage to pull off that trick or catch that sizable wave that you missed on other occasions. (laughs) What material are you using now to make SUP and Foil? Right now I just got the new Source Pro Carbon 7.3 from Redwoodpaddle, and it looks spectacular...I hope the waves will come in tomorrow because if not, I’ll slip into the wave pool at the water park (laughs). Also, my friends at Redwoodpaddle know that I love a challenge and they have also sent me a 6.9 x 23 rocket. At the moment it is like a bull, but we will tame it.

And what is a typical day like in Montse’s life? And what other hobbies do you have? Well, the truth is that my day depends a bit on the previous one, I come from a pharmaceutical family and by having my own business I can have a little more flexibility in the schedule. If there are waves that day, I usually get up very early and go into the water as soon as the sun rises. On the other hand, if the forecast is windier, that day I start earlier to be able to be free in the early afternoon. The problem comes in the day when waves are square in the morning and wind in the afternoon, then it’s time to work at night (laughs). Before starting pharmacy I worked as a dental hygienist, I have never wanted to quit completely so I continue to work a couple of afternoons a week. Besides, I also continue studying, right now I am with a double master’s degree in marketing and electronic commerce from EAE. Also, it’s been a while since I’ve been fond of playing paddle tennis ... how cool to be able to specify a day and an hour and know that you don’t have to wait for any previous to match, eh? What if ... I’m a fish out of the water on the track. Catalonia has a huge potential for water sports. What do you think it takes to have more people doing SUP Surf and especially girls? The truth is that we always have very good conditions, I go into the water almost every day. Many times people come up to me on the beach or they write to me on social networks and they always say things like: “how cool”, “I would love to do the same”, “it must be incredible to do that”. And I always say the same, you can do it too! The beginnings are always tough, but wanting is power. I always recommend making groups so that people can join together, share the sessions, give each other advice and feel more secure. So now you know, everyone to the water!

The Spanish SUP Surf Championship is coming, autumn with excellent waves and a whole future ahead. Are you ready for great emotions? That always, eager for new experiences, good sessions and meeting new people in and out of the water. That in the end, that’s what it’s all about...We share an incredible sport (or way of life) and together we have to promote good vibes in the water and take care of our beaches and seas. Thanks to... To all the people (family, friends and brands) who support me every day to be able to continue faithfully with this lifestyle that is sometimes difficult to explain (and above all to make understood) someone who does not share this passion. And finally, thanks to all those people who in one way or another make this world and these sports bigger by creating initiatives, supporting riders and encouraging people who want to venture out to try it. Greetings to all and see you in the water!

ICF STAND UP PADDLE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2021 Ismael López

ICF

After a few weeks totally emocionated by the Hungarian World Cup held in the town of Balatonfured, we began to assimilate everything that has happened in the event, we can say that it was the event of the year, not only due to the influx of competitors, also at the quality and organization level. I think it can be a turning point when it comes to watching this sport and it can mark a before and after for future international events, and set new standards at the level of the type of events and new qualifying forms. But we want to show you how we live it and here is our travel experience.

48 42

The first thing that was supposed to us is the way to get there, since we are still in the COVID era and any international trip is an added challenge. After informing us about all the health procedures that we would have to have in order to attend the event, we got down to work to see how to get to the town of Balatonfured. Our first option was to go by van touring several European countries like many international riders and that some spanish did, but in the end we decided on the easy solution which was to take a flight to Budapest and then rent a vehicle and get to Balatonfured.

49 43

When we arrived, the first thing we felt was that it was not just any lake, its dimensions attracted a lot of attention. It is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe and one of the largest in all of Europe. With an elongated shape, its length reaches 79km and at its widest point, it reaches 14km. To get an idea of the dimensions if we compare them with the smaller sea, it has a length of 21km and a maximum width of 11km, we could say that it is an inland sea of freshwater. In addition, it is surrounded by marinas with sailboats and all kinds of pleasure boats. And every day of the event, you could see a lot of sailboats sailing and especially accompanying the competitors on the day of the long distance. After our first impression, the first day of competitions arrived and it was the day of the qualifying rounds of the technical races. And the first thing we could see was a circuit of 7 buoys in 1000m, very technical, but at the same time super visual since the whole circuit was located a few meters from the shore where we could enjoy the races and be able to cheer on all the competitors. A type of test that in our opinion is going to be a reference to be copied by many organizers, since all the competitors with whom we were able to speak loved it and also the type of qualifying rounds with repechage, they were very motivated to be with the batteries. loaded and give everything in their rounds

50

The second day of competition, was the day of the long distance in which they would have to do an 18km route along a 9km circuit in which they had to do two laps. In the master 50 category, they completed a 10.2km course as in the juniors, which was the same distance. The conditions were tough as thermal winds soon picked up and proved it was a not at all race in flat conditions. Which at the beginning they had a downwind and then a sidewind that made the conditions not easy for all the competitors, finishing the lap in an upwind. But even so, the race pace of all the competitors was very high and the times were at the height of the quality of the event. As it seemed that the long distance race was a spectacle, in the afternoon qualifying rounds of the technical race and the sprints followed. These were carried out in the same location where the technical circuit was carried out and had to travel 200m. Lane delimitation buoys were not placed for each competitor and that in the end caused benefits and problems for the competitors, since some other competitor could cross you or help you in drafting. Issues that generated both positive and negative controversy in the Stand Up paddle community and we believe that it will last for a long time as long as this type of event continues.

51

On the third day of the event, the qualifying rounds of both technical races and sprints continued. But the organization decided to create a popular event so that the Stand up Paddle party was not just a professional event and give the world a vision that this sport has a place for everyone. This category was made with inflatable boards of measures up to 12.6 and they had to make a 6km route. And finally came the last day of competition, the fourth and the forces of all the competitors did not decline. It was the day of the final rounds and the finals of the sprint and technical races, and the truth did not disappoint. We were able to experience very exciting moments and all the attendees vibrated with each of the qualifying rounds and especially in the finals.

I do not want to end this article without emphasizing the great quality of the event, setting the timing of each round throughout the 4 days of competition, in an event with more than 400 competitors from 50 different countries. At the organizational level, I have to say that I have never seen such a good organization at the level of judges and especially broadcasting. Sometimes we had doubts if it was better to see it live or on the giant screen in the village area.

52

As I said at the beginning of the article, I think this event is going to be a benchmark at the level of competitions from now on. And next year the World Cup moves to the coastal town of Gdynia in Poland, and the entire Up Suping Team will be there to make the World Cup feel as if you were right there.

We attach the links for those who did not see the races live, you can see the races of the 4 days. And we miss the article on the Spanish Storm, which will tell you the role of all Spanish competitors in the ICF World Cup.

We must understand even the simplest things to fully enjoy our favourite sport. In this edition of Up to the Foil, we want to show you again how the Foil is composed, maintained, the parts of a Wing and how it is stored

Rubén Salvador

54

FOIL PARTS AND ASSEMBLY -ScrewsEach brand chooses a type of screw, they can be allen, torch, star, etc. All are good although the least recommended is the allen because of the problem that when pressing hard, turn the interior round with the consequence of working with extractors to extract it. The one I like the most is the torch. In terms of maintenance so that it does not pass, petroleum jelly is usually applied so that the screw does not sulfate or weld, especially those who do not usually disassemble the foil for convenience.

55

-Parts of a FoilAll Foil has the same parts: • Front wing • Fuselage • Stabilizer • Mast • Wedges (not all)

-MountingThe order that I would recommend would be, first put the mast on the board, so we won’t have to hold it to put the wings and they won’t touch the ground. Then the fuselage and we finished with the front and rear wings.

56

-StabilizersThere are some brands that we can adjust the inclination of the stabilizer, this offers us to enhance the lift (lift) or avoid going overpowered when we go very fast. Some opt for wedges and others for the crescent-shaped fuselage and stabilizer to rotate.

Our collaborator Rubén Salvador (El Niño Surf Center) shows us how is the assembly of a Foil, mainly the connection between the wings and the fuselage.

57

PARTS OF THE WING -Valve typesIn the valve section there may also be differences, coming from a brand of kites or Stand Up Paddle, they may use the same type of valve as previously used. It is not that one is better than another, but it is interesting since if we already do that sport we save ourselves from having to buy another pump to inflate (€50 approx.) The valves are made up of three parts, the inner row, the retention row, which is where the valve and the plug are housed.

-Tips reinforcementThis is a detail that I value a lot to give resistance and durability to the sail because is typical rubbing in the sand, inflating in the parking lot or sometimes while sailing. Simply a thicker piece of material already performs that option. There are brands that, due to the fight to be the lightest, do not put it on and that can cause problems in the future

58

-Leash connectionAll wings must wear a leash tied to the wrist, to the board or a belt so as not to lose it in a fall or confusion. This connection is a rope or piece of cloth where we will connect our leash. Some use a coiled leash like the one we use in SUP Race or touring boards, but I do not recommend it. My advice is that if we sail in waves or strong winds or do downwinds, I give the front handle one turn, and so if there is a strong pull, all the force is supported by the handle and not that connection.

-Handles or boomHere each brand applies its criteria. Those saving weight put only two small ones, it doesn’t give you much play to use others if you have longer or shorter arms, or even when the wind is light or strong, some put 5 which is the one I use and depending on the at the moment I have come to use 4 of them. There are some with 3 longs, here even if you only use two, you do have the option of varying your hand position. Then we have those who put 7/9, surely there is no person there who does not find a comfortable navigation position.

60

And finally, the boom or semi-boom, those who come from windsurfing love these because they have the same grip sensation, you can use your harness line and your position can be chosen millimetrically without having to release your hands, something that I have still noticed. be a problem, but it is comfortable. Most brands are working in this section to offer booms at minimum weight, storage space and assembly reduction. Which one works better? They all go the same as long as you choose the one that best suits your way of sailing. In downwind I recommend handles and if you end up with tendonitis in the elbows, you are wearing one that is either decompensated or forces you to carry your elbow semi-flexed all the time.

-WindowsThere is always a great debate on this topic in the internet forums, there are followers of both versions although there are very few brands that do not carry them. The real objective is visibility while we are sailing, it is true that in the end, we all raise the wing to confirm that there is no one either in a turn or overtaking someone by windward, but in a regatta, for example, we cannot lose that time. Rejections are usually based on weight gain and areas of possible breakage when folding the sail. With the new materials and new backpacks on the market, all these are details of the past, even so, my personal opinion is YES windows, but that they are well placed so that you can see the sky it is preferable not to put them.

61

-One PumpThe one pump is basically a connection between the leading edge and the rib to make it more comfortable to inflate it at one time. There are brands that do not have it and you have to inflate separately, but these are comfortable when deflating, however, there are already some that have one pump and an extra valve on the rib for quick deflation.

In this video, our collaborator Rubén Salvador (El Niño Surf Center) shows us how to store a Wing correctly.

FOIL FEATURES FANATIC

SKY WING

The Sky Wing is the ideal board for anyone who wants to do Wing Foil. This board has been designed to get the better performance when you use a wing and the foil. It is lightweight and has a small size for the best maneuverability but at the same time is stable thanks to its volume. It comes with the footstraps so it is easy to manage and control the board, moreover you can start to try the tricks without lost the board. The new range of Sky Wing models grows to nine dedicated shapes and takes efficiency to another level. Ride the smallest board possible in the lightest of winds! If you thought the previous Sky Wing range was leading the way in Wing Foiling, try one of these hot new shapes and you’ll be impressed how much of a change a board can make. Available in sizes from 4’6 “to 6’3” (from 35 lt. To 140 lt.)

STARBOARD

FREEWING AIR V2

The new FreeWing AIR V2 is now more stable & stiffer, offering more reactivity, acceleration & speed. It has been designed for wing foil beginners to down-the-line wing surfers. The deep narrow and forward window position is designed for you to see clearly where you are heading and now with the new aft windows on the bigger sizes ensures your safety while having a great time on the water. The center strut is extra wide where it meets the leading edge strut, making that connection rigid for more power and stability. Yes, you can now ride faster with more control Available in measures from 3 m. at 7 m.

FOIL FEATURES SUNOVA

FOILBOARD AVIATOR The SUP Foil Sunova Aviator board is a Foilboard type board for surf, downwind or wing. A clean contour that reaches a pointed bow allows for easy paddling with less chance of nose grabbing. The double v-concave provides stability without compromising performance. It comes standard with inserts for foot straps. TR3 uses special paulownia wood. Approximately three pieces are used per board, so its application is faster and lighter than other techniques. It is twice the thickness of balsa wood, and by using the unique sandwich technique, a stiffer yet more durable board is created. The higher density of paulownia wood generates a stronger impact such as paddling, heels, knees or harder objects. The TR3 does not use carbon, but the combination of fiber and pulling the wood down creates an effect similar to carbon. Available in sizes from 5’10 “to 6’10” (from 85 lt. To 145 lt.)

NSP

AIRWING

The NSP Airwing is a very accessible and lightweight sail, making it ideal for people with Wingfoilers, SUPers and surfers who want to increase their time and skills on the water. The NSP Airwing’s geometry offers smooth power, stability and smooth handling. It invites you to experience new sensations of water sports. It is the result of tons of prototypes and hundreds of hours of testing. NSP’s R&D process refined contours, tube geometries and sheet profiles to deliver a smooth and stable ride. The wing has a stable, low-looking shape, balanced with moderate dihedral angles. Available in measures from 3 m. at 6 m.

NSP O2 RACE FSL by Nicolás Arnedo

During the Costa Blanca SUP Challenge event, taking advantage of the SUP Village, I had the possibility of different models of SUP boards, both inflatable and rigid. On this occasion, I describe the excellent sensations that the NSP O2 Race FSL inflatable board gave me; and more precisely the 14’0 “x 27” model. I remind you, that this inflatable board was the one that obtained many medals during the ICf World Championship in Hungary, and this made me want to try it with more motivation.

As soon as you take it and carry it to the water, you feel its comfort and very good weight distribution. The handle is amazing! At first, I was struck by its beautiful design and shape, undoubtedly the right one to fulfil its objective, which is to be a real inflatable SUP Race board. I remind you that this brand now has one of the best ranges of carbon race boards on the market. The Molokai, Sonic, Puma and Carolina are sweeping national and international events; with which its designers know perfectly how to spin also when developing their inflatable boards.

Great sensations from the first paddling. In flat conditions it slides in an incredible way, its nose and slight rocker make it not slow down and break the water very well to the sides. In general, the narrower an inflatable board is, the more nervous and sensitive it is. In this case and with its 27 “, these characteristics have been conspicuous by their absence, becoming a very stable board. 78

Paddling in conditions somewhat more moved by the wind and waves, the board responds very well. It fits perfectly in all conditions and has blown me away on downwind. It glides perfectly and that is when the distribution of weights within the board is very noticeable. I imagine how well it must go with waves or in a beach race! I knew that this model had been reduced by approximately 1.5kg by removing fibres per square meter, but what I did not expect is that it would be very rigid and feel less rebound than on other inflatable boards. There is some great design work here. And all these nuances make it a true race board and that the rider can achieve great goals. And one of the things that I have loved is its Air7 V3 fin system. You can assemble and disassemble it, and this makes it much easier when it comes to rolling it up and storing it. When it comes to sailing, you don’t feel any kind of resistance and the keel hooks perfectly. That is one more feature that makes the difference compared to other models of inflatable boards. Of course, it comes with a comfortable backpack to store it and with many accessories for you to enjoy a great inflatable SUP Race board. Great job from NSP, and if you are looking for a table with these characteristics, I recommend it 100%.

SOMO BEACH RACE Spanish Championship SUP&Prone Ismael López

James Panter. Desde el Mar. Up Suping

We are on the beach of Somo, August 21 of 2021, after a year and a half with no competition in northern Spain due to this global pandemic. We cannot imagine a more idyllic place to do a Beach Race and after the cancellation of the Suances race. But since these years are different, it couldn’t be less. And we could already predict from the weather reports that there would not be much swell, which we could not imagine a sea as calm as the one we found first thing in the morning when we arrived the beach. Seeing the sea like this on the beach of Somo is very unusual and I have rarely seen it, but when the God Neptune does not want there to be movement, we cannot do otherwise. So, in the end it became a more technical race than Beach Race.

80

The race was organized by heats, in which the first 8 classified were classified for the final and there was a repechage to complete the starting grid of the final. All categories were hotly contested. As the hours of competition passed and the sleeves followed each other, a little wind started to rise as the tide rose and the beach increased its water level. In addition to the Stand Up Paddle modality, the Cantabrian Surf Federation decided to do the same circuit to carry out a Prone race, which left no one indifferent and many people who were in the area did not hesitate to stay as spectators and enjoy the show. But let’s go to the trouble we are going to tell you the show that the competitors gave in Stand Up Paddle.

In the Elite category, Fernando Pérez and Antonio Morillo from Cádiz finished first and second, accompanied by Rafa Sirvent from Alicante, closely followed by Ben Laurence who gave a superiority recital in the first round, qualifying in the first position. In the Master category, Salva Mora was in the first position, in turn, remaining in fifth place in the general classification and thus continue to show that the Master category continues to have a lot of potential among its members, he was followed by Iker Barbarrubio and Oscar Ruiz. In the Master 50 category, how could it be otherwise and this year we are used to it, Daniel Parres was the winner of the test followed by Augusto García and Enrique Bizcocho. In the female category, the elite final and the sub 18, it was carried out with a distance of 30 seconds between start and start. The winner in the Elite category was Esperanza Barrera, second place went to Laura Quetglas and to finish the podium Izaskun Martin. But in the general classification, it was not like that and although there was a 30 seconds disadvantage between categories, the two U18s Duna Gordillo came in second place and in the global time calculation, he came just 3 seconds behind Esperanza Barrera. And Amaia Mellado was not far behind, and apart from her second place in her category, she also managed to rise to fifth in the general classification. In the Master 40 and 50 female categories there was very little participation, but not for that they gave everything and the times were very tight, with Master 40 Nines Alonso in first position and in Master 50 in first place Silvia Canudas and in second place Eva Ruiz .

And the race of the day arrived, the race that gave more spectacle and more emotion until the finish line. From the beginning, it was a fight between Manuel Hoyuela and Lucas Simoncelli that distanced themselves from the rest from the first buoy and it was a power to a power struggle that in the end was decided at the finish line, which had to be reviewed because it was so tight that they came very close together. The winner was Lucas followed by Manuel and a little behind the third place went to Antonio Serrera, demonstrating the great year of evolution that he has been taking and that he will be among the best next year. And we need to summarize for the little ones, our future in Stand up Paddle in our country. In the female SU16 category, and note these names for next season, because they will be repeated in many of the races that are held, first place went to Elene Etxeberria, second place for Ana Marta and third place from Andalusian lands Ainhoa Rivas. And in SUB14 the podium went to Alexia Soto in the first place, Ines Blin in second place and Bianca Toncelli in third place. 83

In the men’s SU16 category, consecrating himself in the great season that he has been taking in this year 2021, Ivan de Frutos took first place, Joan García rose to the second position and closing with third place went to Augusto García. In the men’s SUB14 the first place went to Ciro Molla, second place for Pablo Martínez and third place for Pablo Carbonell. In the female category, there were no participants under 14 years of age, but in the male category there were and in the male SUB12, the first place went to Luca Boni followed by Aetz Ibarloza. And to finalize the ranking in the SUB10 category, the first place went to Joan Gelabert and the second place went to Tomas Blin. Thanks to Pedro Gutiérrez, director of the Spanish Beach Race Championship of the Spanish Surf Federation for organizing it in record time, and to all the collaborating brands for making it a reality. Surely next year Neptune will roar again in the next edition and the show will not be missing.

ISA. ICF. Up Suping

Is incredible. At this point in the season, I still observe the SUPrace test calendar to be disputed and I am very happy to see the number of events that remain to be held at the peninsular level. It is difficult that there is not a weekend in which you cannot compete. Who would have told me a few years ago, when we were lamenting the lack of evidence. But everything has a reason. Without a doubt the first reason is the expansion of this sport; clubs, groups of friends and lone wolves who ultimately want to measure their strength in the race, and who understand SUPrace at its core. This sport hooks. But another of the great reasons is the irruption of the ICF (International Canoe Federation) in the annual calendar. It is well known that the world championships held in Hungary have been a success, as were those of the ISA (International Surfing Association) at the time. The canoeing federations have bet hard and new competitions have emerged in the field of the Race.

86

The answer has not been made wait, and it is that it is necessary to put the batteries when something is being played. The final result, tests and more tests sponsored by different federations and private organizations: long distance championships, endurance, sprints, beach racing, waves, technical race, 1000 meters, 200 meters…etc, etc, in short, a joy.

Fundamental evidence that things are changing we have in the industry itself, which very intelligently and always with a commercial vision, is adapting new designs of tables to flat spaces such as those frequented in the great lakes of central Europe where the clientele does not leave. to climb. And is that not everyone can be lucky enough to access wonderful waves and be able to surf them, but to have a racing board to enjoy in large aquatic spaces. It is not our intention to assess the suitability of the competent Federation, which is why the competent sports courts are already in place, and we have already spoken (UTOPÍA) on the subject on previous occasions. We simply want everyone to fit in, every Race lover who enjoys his board and paddle.

87

The versatility of SUP Race makes us contest tests in lakes, rivers, oceans, beaches, swimming pools, canals, ports...our possibilities are endless and there are, as has been shown, tests for everyone. What we athletes would like is a certain degree of understanding between institutions. Sometimes it is frustrating to have to suffer different regulations or duplication of federative files, not to mention the coincidence of dates in large events. We do not have the definitive solution to solve the Olympic competitions, but if this endless dispute has had something good, it is that it has been shown that there is space for everyone. Who knows, maybe we could rationalize the tests, maybe dedicate some to inland areas (lakes, reservoirs...), and maybe others to the open sea (waves, beaches ...) with areas of intersection and confluence, but this is only one idea out of a thousand possible ones, perhaps not correct, but always to seek common spaces of understanding and harmony for the sake of SUPrace. And it is that the final decision on who is more competent to govern this speciality is something difficult and surely traumatic for some of the parties, but especially for athletes. Not seeing reality would be a mistake, and we know that many elite athletes have felt pressured by the events they attend

It is curious that it is the industry and the capital that has put order and that the sponsoring houses themselves, as I mentioned before, are the ones that first have adapted to the situation and decide to go to all kinds of competitions where their athletes what they have to do, Above all, it is to compete, regardless of the federation they represent. It’s a great time for sports leaders to rise to the occasion. I believe that it will be those who work the most and best and respect the special characteristics of our sport, who will win the prize for representing SUPrace. Listen to the athletes, everyone, the elite and those who hang around the house ... the surfers and the swamps ... because everyone, absolutely everyone, with their idiosyncrasies, fits into our sport.

88

We have seen how the new generations of this country succeed more and more in the international arena. They make us dream of a future full of national victories in the SUPrace world. Please, let’s take care of them. Let your main concern be to train and perform under the best of circumstances. And let the superiors of any level row and row. You also paddle in the same direction, understand.

II SUP

CHALLENGE CABO DE PALOS Because the second parts were always good, this event has once again offered a lot of spectacle and excitement to more than a hundred SUP Race competitors.

90

Up Suping

I think we will always remember the second edition of the SUP Challenge Cabo de Palos. The waves that we missed in the Spanish Beach Race Championship appeared last Sunday, October 24, on the Levante beach in Cabo de Palos! And this gave a lot of play, both offshore and on the beach break. Of course, happy faces everywhere ... Scoring competition for the Mediterranean Circuit of SUP Race 2021 and the Spanish Cup of Fesurfing, which attracted more than a hundred participants from all over the Mediterranean and the interior of our country. An event that last year left a great taste in the mouth thanks to its organization, and that this year was no less…And although a small storm had to bring the competitions together in a single day, we have enjoyed a great weekend on the murcian coast.

Due to the swell, the little racers carried out their races in an area sheltered from the strong sea, always guarded by boats and other adult ¨SUPers¨, in addition to the Adapted category. Meanwhile, in the previously established competition area, the different categories entered the water in an established order so that they did not have to meet between departures and arrivals. In addition to the usual categories of our circuit, we also had a Popular category like many local riders, who have faced the sea and the waves like real surfers.

98

But the competitors who have enjoyed the most, possibly have been those of the Elite category, who had a tour of the most beautiful areas of Cabo de Palo and with bumpy but entertaining conditions of waves, lateral downwind, rebounding or like a ¨washing machine¨, etc ... And here the one that better master all these conditions, is the one who reaches the goal first. It was the case of Dani Parres, who made a great reading race and got the first position in this category, ahead of the young Iván de Frutos who, being SUB16, tried his luck in this category and took a spectacular second position; ahead of the great Telmo Irigoyen. And we also had two daring competitors in the female category, where Eva Ruiz and Raquel Estevez got the first and second positions respectively.

Lluis Riaola

We also want to highlight the great performance of the competitors Alejandro, Marco, Jose Luis, Antonio, Carlos and Santiago; because despite having paddled for more than 2 hours, they have finished the course. Congratulations cracks! Competitors Elena Romero and Angel Ruiz continue at the top of the Promotion podium. Sergio Cantoral and Teo Ugeda have commanded in the SUB18 category, Ainhoa Rivas and Joan Verdú winners in SUB16, and Alexia Soto and Pablo Carbonell in SUB14. As you can see, the Parres Watersports quarry is very present in this II SUP Challenge Cabo de Palos. 93

And why do we speak so highly of Amaya and Oso’s organization? Because it is possibly one of the events that offer more security, order, volunteers and dedication to riders. It is the event where other organizers can learn some tips to improve what is present, which is already very good. In Cabo de Palos you can breathe an exceptional human warmth, a good vibe that makes you enjoy the surroundings and the sport. It’s excellent. 94

Two editions that we have loved and also have a lot of merits, since last year it was in the heat of the Covid wave and this year we are closely monitoring the conditions of the sea. Thank the entire organization for the impeccable work, the SUB UP Hostel, the Cabo de Palos Nautical Club, all the boats that have ensured the safety of the athletes and all the collaborators of the event. As soon as we know the date of next year… It is marked in red on our calendar!

When we arrived at the ICF World Championship in Hungary, we knew that there were a great number of spanish competitors registered in all categories, both male and female, but we could not imagine the level they were going to perform in each of their categories and managing to climb the rungs of the pódium. We know that in Spain there are more and more

THE SPANISH

STORM

the world and know what your place is. But the truth is that a large part of the spanish competitors are among the best in the world and the ICF World Championship we made it known who and where they are from. To begin to stand out, we can start with the juniors category, where we were the almost absolute owners in all modalities, always occupying the steps of the podium. Beach Race: In the men’s category in the juniors final, the first 4 places were Spanish, with Lucas Simoncelli in second place, Aarón Sánchez, third place Manuel Hoyuela and fourth place Nicolás Trujillo. In the female category of the juniors final, in the first place, it was for Duna Gordillo, in second place Aida Soberbio, in third place Sonia Caimari and if it seemed little to us, in fifth place it was for Rakele Mannino. Continuing with the Juniors, in the sprint final in the women’s category Duna Gordillo, repeated victory, followed by Sonia Caimari in third place, fourth place went to Aida Soberbio and fifth place went to Rakele Mannino. It was not enough with 4 Spanish women in the female category, in the junior male category, we got 5 members who were in the first place, Aarón Sánchez, in second place Lucas Simoncelli, fourth place Manuel Hoyuela, in sixth place Nicolás Trujillo and Seventh Place Marc Simoncelli. It should be remembered that each final was made up of 8 competitors and as you can read the number of Spanish competitors in the finals, no country achieved it in any category, but as it is not enough, we will continue to tell you about the rest of the podiums that our competitors achieved.

Long Distance: The juniors had to do a 10km course and the spanish riders showed their potential by getting the top 4 places in the men’s category, with Lucas Simoncelli in the first place, in second place, Manuel Hoyuela, in third place Aarón Sánchez and fourth place Antonio Serrera. How could it be less, the girls were not far behind, and they managed to arrive 4 among the top 5 positions. Getting a triplet of victories with Duna Gordillo, in second place Sonia Caimari, in third place Aida Soberbia and in fifth place Mar Bascuñana...it was amazing!. After the podium binge that we got in the Juniors category, the seniors and masters were not far behind. In the Master 50 category, Daniel Parres achieved a triplet of victories in the three categories Sprint, Technical and Long Distance. But Daniel was not alone on the podium, because Mar Foraster accompanied him in second place on the podium in the Technical race and second in the Sprints. In the Master 40 category, we were not far behind, getting 3 podiums with Salva Mora with a victory in the Technical Race and two second places in the Long Distance and Sprint category. The same happened in the Master 50 category, Salva was not alone and in the long distance category, he was accompanied by Miquel Roige in third place. And without stopping to get excited, we continue talking about the girls in the Elite category in which, as we are used to Esperanza Barreras, who was in all the finals classified, finishing second in the Technical Race, sixth place in the sprint and second place in the Long Distance. Without taking away any merits, although they did not get a podium, the great results that Laura Quetglas, Izaskun Martin and Sheila Sirvent achieved indicate that we have had girls in the Elite for a while. And as we have said before, in the female master 50 categories they are still warriors, where Silvia Canudas achieved two podiums, a third place in the technical race and a great victory, much disputed in the Long Distance. Once all the victories and podiums achieved have been named, I cannot forget the great results of Rafael Sirvent, Antonio Morillo, Enrique Hurtado, Iker Barbarrubio, Antonio Serrera, Marc Simoncelli, Beatriz Canudas, María Barrena, Miguel Martorell, Zoe Remolina, Oscar Ruiz, Salvador Ribes, Guillermo Goyanes and Fernando Pérez. Thank you guys, you have made us enjoy your great results and we are sure that from now on you will be great rivals and they will join you at the starting line to follow you closely.

What a 2021 Elene! Paddling in many SUP Race events and having fun. How do you feel? Happy and enjoying each of the races to the fullest; both in the Long Distance and in the Beach Race, this being the one I like the most.

And recently you have been consolidated as Spanish Champion of SUP Race in SUB16. You will be super happy! Yes, because in the end, it is a reward for all the effort we make and at the same time, a motivation to continue training. Every year we are more girls and that is what motivates me the most to continue training.

We have followed you for many years with your brother Unax. But tell us about your beginnings in SUP and your growth with the entire Kairoscore team. It was our cousins Jurgi and Ane Zulaika who got us hooked on this sport. They taught us to paddle and to enjoy the sea. We started rowing when we were 8-9 years old and so far we haven’t stopped. Actually, for us, SUP has been like a summer sport, as we ended the swimming season in July and started paddling. We are a small team that cannot always go out to train together, despite this, we are very close and share the feelings of training daily.

How was the experience in the Spanish Surfing Championship by Autonomies in Galicia with the Cantabrian team? It was an awesome experience. I made new partners in and out of the water. The best thing was living in a different championship in which the important thing is the result as a team and not the individual result. The reception from the Cantabrian team was great. The atmosphere between us was very special and we supported each other. I ended up very happy with my contribution to the Beach Race.

How do you get along with the riders when you go competing across the country? What do you think of the atmosphere at the events? I get along great with everyone and the atmosphere that usually forms at each event is incredible. Important competitions allow us to meet again more often and make more pineapple.

Tell us about Donosti and the places where you usually go paddling. In Donosti there are three beaches, but above all, we paddle in La Concha, because it is a beach that is more protected by the bay. If the sea is not too strong, we go around Santa Clara Island and end up in an area called Pico del Loro where waves are formed with which we enjoy a lot at the end of the training. Sometimes we also usually go near the Zurriola, which stands out for its great waves.

With what other water sports do you combine Stand Up Paddle? With swimming, although this year I will try to focus more thoroughly on SUP, keeping the pool as a compliment. I also love competing on Waterman type circuits where swimming, prone paddleboarding, running and stand up paddle are combined. They are tough but very fun tests. Once again, it was Jurgi who encouraged us to participate in this type of test.

SUP Race competitions make you travel a lot and see new places. Is it something that you enjoy a lot with your family? You are right. I have travelled to many places and always with my family. I love paddling in different places with my brother Unax. On every trip I have a great time, we laugh together and those trips bring us together. These months are being intense. We have competitions almost every weekend but that’s what I like.

How have you lived the evolution of this sport on the boards and in the paddles? Have you noticed improvements in your paddling technique and physical performance? With enthusiasm every time I have to change the board. An inflatable has nothing to do with a 12’6 hard board. Next year I upgrade and change the table to a 14’0 that I am already testing and with which I want to compete. My technique has evolved as the height of the paddles has been shortened. I hope SUP continues to evolve because it is a young sport and my technique with it.

SUP is growing a lot! How do you see yourself in a few years and what goals would you like to get? My dream would be to attend the Paris event in the short term; to the SUP World Championship next year in Poland and to the EuroTour circuit. And in the longer term, to the Waterman of Tahiti, with Unax.

Thanks to… To all my family for accompanying me to all places, for encouraging me, for helping me and for everything they are doing for us. Thanks to Jurgi and Ane, for teaching us to enjoy this magnificent sport and to my brother Unax, for encouraging me in so many moments, teaching me new tricks and giving me advice. Thanks also to the Kairoscore club for trusting us and supporting us in everything. Thank Jurgi for his efforts to prepare for our training sessions and go out on the water with us when he can. Thanks Nico for interviewing me and making us enjoy this wonderful sport with your Up Suping posts.

MEETINGTIME Up Suping

Meetings are back! The presentations are back. The feedback is back. The meeting is back, something that after the presence of Covid-19 had to be suspended in person. But times improve and from Up Suping we have once again felt the warmth of the people and that information so necessary to face a new season.

We have travelled to Tarifa to enjoy the meeting of the Duotone, ION and Fanatic brands. As you well know, we are talking about brands that belong to the Kite, Wing, Foil and SUP sector among others. One of the main objectives of this meeting was to bring together the dealers from Spain and Portugal, to present all the 2022 material and talk about the current market situation. The Hotel Los Lances in this city was the point where the different presentations of the aforementioned sports took place, spread over several days and in the morning. With the presence of the Wet Watersports and Boards & More team from Germany and with national and international riders, the presentations were very entertaining and with an excellent connection between the presenters and the dealers or media, as is the case of Up Suping.

After a few hours of meeting in the hotel’s auditorium, we would go to the Valdevaqueros beach, where the organization was waiting for us with all the current material and part of the 2022 collection to test. The truth is that for wind lovers, we have had excellent conditions for it every day of the meeting. Kite kites have taken over practically the entire area of the event, where Airton Cozzolino has offered us a great show with great tricks under the east wind with gusts of 50 knots.

And in addition, the Wing and the Foil have had a great presence, both in the water and in the novelties that are to come. This sport is growing rapidly, and the objective continues to be to adapt it to the entire public and with maximum performance. We have been able to see new construction on the mast for Foil and the new Unit, a Wing model from Duotone that will give a lot to talk about. And also an ION Wing Foil harness that will also be a centre of attention for lovers of this sport for years to come.

The French rider Fred Bonnef was in charge of presenting some novelties in the Fanatic brand section. The most notable change has been for the Blitz, a board that Fred has tweaked to make it more stable and competitive in flat water, but with the same performance as in an open sea, for example in downwinds. Inflatable boards will continue to be very strong in the marking, thanks to their great demand for their comfort and price, as well as their range of paddles. And the most anticipated thing for all has been to see personally the new models of the Sky Wing. Wonderful boards for practising Wing Foil, ideal for those who begin to fly, to experts. And above all, big changes for more comfort and adaptability. Ah! And a board for absolutely EVERYTHING is the Bee ... which has already entered the market at the end of last year and is expected to gain more customers; since with it, you can do SUP Surf, Wing Foil, SUP and/or SUP Foil. A true gem.

And although at Up Suping we do not control the kitesurfing equipment so much, it has been very productive to know first hand the components for the development of the materials to go sailing and all the Duotone technology. Kites, surfkite boards and twintips, accessories and an endless number of products that offer athletes the possibility of enjoying this sport in a big way. As well as ION harnesses and accessories, which guarantee comfort and safety wherever you go. In short: it has been a great pleasure to have seen the news of these great brands for 2022, which we are sure will be a great season for water sports and especially for Foil. Thank Wet Watersports for having our presence, the excellent treatment we have received and how they have taken care of us during our stay in Tarifa.

Albert Laborda. Up Suping

The city of Blanes, where the famous Costa Brava begins, has been hosting a SUP Race competition for several years thanks to the work of the Paddle Surf Blanes SUP Paradise team. An authentic event that has the necessary ingredients to be placed on the calendar of many SUP Racers throughout the country, and that although it is already known within the Catalan SUP Circuit of the Catalan Surf Federation, this year it has taken a great step to the be scoring for the Fesurfing Spanish Cup. 112

This new edition hosted more than a hundred riders and people from different communities in our country, where the wonderful Blanes Nautical Club welcomed everyone on September 11 and 12 in its magnificent facilities.

On the first day of the event, a 3 km Popular race was offered to the public with a tour in front of the beach of Blanes with portage included, very attractive from the seafront of this city. Although the sea conditions were somewhat strong, these future SUP cracks made the whole cross without problems; even many of them did it disguised, where the most original ones were awarded. Some riders who would participate the next day in the Spanish Cup test were also encouraged. It is about enjoying and doing sports. And also, they were very well pleased with an awards ceremony where almost all the participants took home a souvenir thanks to the collaborating brands of the event.

The second day of the event featured the official SUP Race competitions of the Spanish Cup and the Catalan Circuit. Different courses for different categories but always with the wonderful Costa Brava as the setting. The conditions were super flat, and even though many regular competitors of this circuit could not attend the event due to their participation in other international events, we had great participation in the Elite male and female category. Tomás Sánchez has returned to be the winner, taking the victory of the 12 km. ahead of the local Xavi Marina and Albert Folch. And as for the girls, the Olympian Eli Llargues continues on her way to be among the best paddlers in the country with a great victory in Blanes, followed by Laura Gil and Desirée Sánchez.

The male Amateur category, the young man from Alicante, Iván de Frutos, was the winner and also took the victory in the SUB16. Carlos Alberto Garijo and Javi Hernández accompanied him on the Amatuer podium. The Gipuzkoan Elene Etxeberría took the victory for the girls, and also in the SUB16 category for her; she was accompanied by Paula Ruiz and Mariana Dubra.

As the day before, all the competitors were able to rest and regain strength at the Club Náutico de Blanes facilities before and after the awards ceremony. The great organization of the entire SUP Paradise team should be noted, both in and out of the water. Undoubtedly, one of the great events that SUP has in Catalonia and that does not stop growing every year. Excellent work from Xavi, Neus and their entire team. Next year more and better!

INNER SEA With feet on the ground Beatriz Felipe López

Kurro Díaz. Desde el Mar. Up Suping

Every time I go to a Paddle Surf event I am surprised by how this sport has more and more fans and how it attracts spectators of different ages and places. It amazes me how in just a few years raiders have made spectacular progress in a sport that was so unknown. But just as SUP has forged its foundations and is consolidated in sport, those who participate in it become increasingly competitive and their goals more ambitious. Without a doubt, we have to dream big, but first, we have to know who we are, where we started from and where we want to go so that those ambitions do not turn against us. You have to be ambitious but with your feet on the ground 116

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE They say that any past time was better, but it is not like that. If athletes like Muhammad Ali (boxer), Ayrton Senna (Formula 1 driver) or Pelé (footballer) raised their heads, they would be surprised at the amount of technology that is applied to sport today. A technology that they did not use and that they did not need to de-target in their disciplines. Obviously everything changes and changes always bring better things but also worse. Today those who compete have at their disposal biomechanical studies, clocks that control the heart rate. They can keep track of their speeds, kilometres, hours of sleep and they can also have materials adapted to their needs depending on the weather. It is amazing to have these aids to achieve objectives but it is a shame to see how many raiders today focus so much on all that that they forget their true qualities and their real possibilities. They are forgetting to forge something very important: character and attitude. And this has consequences.

117

THE REALITY I SEE In all the competitions I attend as a spectator I always try to sneak into conversations between adult raiders. Before the competition, I hear questions like how much are you training? How far do you run per kilometre? And the pulsations to how long do you take them? And strokes per minute? And with the responses they receive, they make comparisons and set objectives. The speech of these people changes at the end of the race.

I have been fatal; I train an average of…; I strive for nothing; no matter how hard I pressed, I couldn’t get my rhythm; I have better results than…It is when the person explodes in an Internal Sea of bad sensations. What happened? Very easy. The focus was not in the right place. Far from making a global analysis of the situation, they have focused solely on mathematical training data. They overlook that in competitions variables come into play that is not being trained or measured with any apparatus. Curiously, this does not happen among the children’s categories. The youngest does not make comparisons, they are simply going to give their all at all times. If your expectations are not met, nothing happens! because they have the peace of mind of having always tried giving all the best they had at that time. Remember: training is not the same as competing.

118

CONVERSING WITH THE FRUSTRATION When it comes to recovering from unwanted results, the little ones can do it faster, while adults are dedicated to feeding what we call frustration. Like any unpleasant emotion, frustration plays a vital role for the human being as it helps to generate new resources. If you come to understand it and control all the energy it generates, you will have before you the key to eternal knowledge and learning. Those feelings of anger, sadness or anguish that arise indicate that there is something that is not following reality, something that has not been taken into account, something that needs to be worked on...

When you stop to objectively analyze what happened from beginning to end, focusing on yourself and your feelings, you will discover aspects that surprisingly are not in the options of your watch. But here you have to be very careful. When you converse with frustration, there is automatically a great need to calm the discomfort that you feel. The first reaction you have is to blame others or to throw balls out. What if it was very hot, what if the wind, what if at the start they made me... Suddenly you are an expert in looking for excuses but you are unable to see that the rules of the game were the same for everyone, or is it that the heat just fell on your board? If you are looking for excuses you will find them but you will not find anything to improve on. They will make you weaker. If you silence them and allow yourself to be critical of yourself, a world of possibilities will open up before you. You will discover that improvement is always possible.

119

SMALL STEPS Learning to manage frustration comes with continuous and intense work. As always, I am going to give you some brief guidelines so that you can begin to forge a different attitude towards frustration. Start by adjusting your goals and expectations with reality. Lean on your coach or someone you trust who will give you another vision of reality. Compare if it fits with yours and if necessary readjust. Having the opinion and assessment of someone outside can open your eyes.

Discover the fundamentals. There is no doubt that technological advances are a plus when looking for improvements. What you should be clear about is that it is not the most fundamental or the only thing to focus on. Do not forget to work on your attitude, your motivation and above all, do not forget to work on the ability to recover from adversity.

The frustration begins when the horn sounds. Right at that moment, critical thinking begins to compare and assess how you are doing. You stop competing to load yourself with weight.

The power of abstraction and concentration during the competition will make you obtain better results. No excuses. You begin to see frustration as a tool for improvement. If at the end of the competition the level is too high, distance yourself, find a quiet place to breathe and tell yourself that there are still things to improve 120

Runaway from those who love you. Yes, yes, those who love you will make you more fragile. And not because they want you bad but because they want to see you well. This leads them to disrespect your process and to offer themselves a gold platter full of excuses. Respectfully ask them to accompany you but in silence. After the storm, he looks for the way. Don’t immediately start training madly and aimlessly. Take some time to reflect and find those aspects that you missed. Mark new lines of work and if possible do it in a company to continue adjusting expectations with reality.

Do not forget the most important. Be grateful for the opportunity that a bad competition gave you to keep improving. As tennis coach Toni Nadal says:

“Always try to make a better version of yourself so that tomorrow your conscience is calm, knowing that at all times you gave your best and did everything in your power. Beyond a result, there is something priceless: personal satisfaction “ Beatriz Felipe López . Psychologist & Coach

DISCOVER HUELVA SUP Discover Huelva SUP Festival

The Isla Cristina beach in Huelva do not disappoint and gave us another fantastic day of SUP Race in Andalusia 122

For the sixth consecutive year, , July 24 at the Windzone Sailing School, was celebrated with great responsibility on the part of the organization and participants due to the health situation that we currently suffer, the Discover Huelva Sup Festival, being also the Championship of Andalusia Paddle Surf, Beach Race Spanish Cup and this year scoring event for the Costa del SUP Circuit of the Fesurfing league, under the organization of the W. Isla Cristina Club and the Municipal Sports Service of the Isla Cristina City Council and by a delegation of the Spanish Surf Federation.

The format of the event invited the success of participation since it combined the promotional aspect of the sport and the federated competition, so there were more than one hundred riders who wanted to participate in this sixth edition of Discover Huelva, among which we highlight this year, the increasingly powerful andalusian team in the Elite category and the young promises in the lower categories that show the great progress of this sport worldwide and that is reflected in our coasts. The day dawned with a strong offshore wind that fell throughout the morning, leaving at mid-morning, an idyllic setting to start the scheduled races. The little ones started and race after race it was a spectacle to see the good work of these future champions. So, after the little ones, the numerous popular and SUB-16 races began, completing the same 2.5 km route. A route marked out a few meters from the sand and that allowed the large public to follow the development of the test at all times.

FESTIVAL 2021

As a finale to the party, the Élite category. In the ¨queen¨ category, two rounds were scheduled and the winner would come out of the sum of the two times. The emotion was more than assured. Highlight the level of Fernando Pérez and Antonio Morillo, who are the role models for two young people who have been pushing hard, Sergio Toledo sub18 and Augusto García Jr sub16. the shore ... the first round with a difference of less than a second between Fernando and Antonio, leaving everything in the air for the second round.

After a break of one hour, it was decided to start the second round but, this time and due to the change in conditions, a different route was marked out, a small upwind - downwind of 3 km. With 15 knots, after a hard climb and vertiginous descent, it was Fernando who took first place and by a few meters, he surpassed Antonio and was able to revalidate his title last year. Third entered Augusto García Jr and fourth Sergio Toledo, who in the end would obtain a meritorious 3rd place. Very strong and numerous the boys of Triana, who showed a magnificent performance throughout the day. In girls, Marina Navarro from Malaga won one more year with a great comeback over the increasingly strong Ángela Núñez who made a sensational first round, with Beatriz Alvargonzález being third. At 6:00 p.m., under a magnificent atmosphere and with the presence of the authorities and sponsors, the prizes were awarded and the Championship closed.

As a summary and once the competition is over, when taking stock we can only say that this Huelva test is fully consolidated, becoming a must for the national Stand Up Paddle and that our sport is in full growth, being the activity today most popular nautical. From Discover Huelva, we will continue betting and working on this type of competition in which federated competition and promotion among the smallest are combined. From the organization, thank the Institutional Support of the Junta de Andalucía, Provincial Council of Huelva, the SMD of the Isla Cristina City Council, our coverage in the sea with Red Cross, Maritime Rescue, Civil Protection, Nautical Academy Balbuena, Jose Martín, Qtt and to the sponsors, Brandt, Starboard, Usisa, Hotel Estival Isla Cristina, Covey, Displayasur, to our DJ Javi Alba for entertaining the Day, to Nico from Up Suping for taking our test to another level and of course, to the volunteers already Emilio and his great team at Windzone who for another year welcome us to their Center in the best possible way. We wait for you next year

Carlota Parras. Julio Pérez

On Saturday, September 25, taking advantage of the celebration of the Spanish Long Distance Championship, a very important event took place for all federated athletes who practise and compete in Paddle Surf, as the Spanish Surf Federation gave a course for Sup Race Judges.

JUDGES COURSE SUP RACE

The dynamics of the course was directed by Daniel Parres, and he gave us a great vision of the updated regulations and of how to face the organization of an official competition with his team of judges recognized by the FESS. The news itself, may not be important, we have always taken our paddle wielding the Fair Play and into the water...That is over, take a look at any federated sport in which it competes and you will see how delayed we have been so far. 126

In Judo, for example, two competitors, on a 10 by 10 meter mat, are refereed by three judges, plus two timekeepers and supervised from outside by an arbitration commission. I could tell you about other sports, think about table tennis, handball, basketball...but surely the judges are always a fundamental and mandatory part of every sporting event.

Our place is the water, there are kilometres, turns, buoys, drafting, different categories running at the same time, boards of different sizes and materials, port and marine authorities, landmarks on arrival, toilets, awards ceremony...AND ALL THIS it has always remained in the good work of the organizer of the event. This course aims to put this sport at the level it deserves, paying attention to the regulations and of course, responding to those claims that may affect the outcome of a race. We hope to be useful (we the judges) and that the FESS counts on us, whenever the occasion requires it. 127
