Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center

Hello: The days are getting noticeably longer every day. The sun, when we see it, will be over the mountain and my backyard will have direct sunlight about the middle of the month. Many of you will already being seeing that warm globe before me so enjoy. Thank you all who participated in the “Light up the Landing” project this year! This will be an annual event for the enjoyment of our locals and our winter visitors. All you drift boaters and rafters out there, we are reaching out to you to see if there is interest in a 2022 Regatta. In this newsletter you’ll find a link to a three-minute interest survey. Kindly respond to the survey or call one of our board members if you are interested. If we don’t hear from you, expect a call from one of us. Is it time to put the fun back into our lives? We want to welcome new board members Shaun Sehl (Prospector John’s) and Kindra Leaders (Grizzly Ridge). Election of officers was held at the January meeting resulting in Kindra Leaders being elected as the Vice President. All the other officers remain the same. We appreciate their continued support on the board. Thank you to all members who are helping to keep our Chamber active. Your Chamber has reached out to Alaska Recreational Management for insight into their plans for this upcoming season and any proactive measures they are taking in response to the closure on August 15th of the Russian River campground. We have invited them to attend the February 24th meeting at Wildman’s. Our next meeting is later than usual to accommodate travel plans for many of the board members. Everyone is invited to our meeting being held at 3:30 at Wildman’s on February 24th.

Cooper Landing Community Club With the new year comes a slightly new Board of Directors. New to the Board is Melissa Brennan as the Secretary. Returning members are Ed Holsten as the Member At-Large, Jamie Gonzales as the Treasurer, and Yvette Galbraith as the Vice President. Martha Story has stepped into the role as President. Kristine Route stepped down as President to move onto bigger and better things. Krissy does promise to still help with the softball tournament. That’s right, the 26th Annual Softball Tournament. We are bringing it back! So stretch out those arms and cancel all of your plans for May 26th through June 4th. The Community Club sends out a huge thanks to the Quartz Creek DOT crew. Thanks for keeping our town safe and for helping with the Snug Harbor Walking Path. You all do a great job! We still have some directories for community members that ordered them. We are looking into sending them to folks that have not picked theirs up yet and will contact you soon. If you want to make other arrangements to pick a directory up you can email cooperlandingcommunityclub@gmail.com. Thanks to all that supported our fundraiser and bought a directory!

Second Place Winners in the 3/4 District Competition!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS Battle of the Books is a highly competitive academic competition that requires teams to read twelve chapter books by a variety of authors. The books are selected by the Alaska Association of School Librarians and must meet of high quality and cover a diversity of subject areas. Students start reading the books in October and aim to complete the reading list by January. Students try to read the books as many times as possible before the District Battles, usually held the second week of February. On Battle Day Cooper Landing students compete in four rounds against twenty-four other schools throughout the Kenai Peninsula. Each round consists of twelve questions that test students’ knowledge about fact and details from the books they’ve read. Teams have thirty seconds to figure out the answer and write both the book title and author on the answer sheet. One person from each team verbally announces the answer when asked by the game host. If a team wins first in the district competition, they will go on to compete at the state level.

The goal of Battle of the Books is to help students with reading comprehension, expand reading interests, and to promote academic excellence. If you’d like to be a future sponsor of the Battle of the Books, click the button below for ways you can support our teams.

This year Cooper Landing had a 3/4 grade level Battle Team and a 5/6 grade level Battle Team. Competitions were moved up and held the last week of January. We are extremely proud of the Cooper Landing students who participated in the Battle of the Books this year. Being on the Battle Book Team is no easy feat. It takes hard work, commitment, and dedication to be a great team, let alone to memorize in great detail facts about the books. Our students work incredibly hard and enjoy participating in this activity every year. Congratulations to the 3/4 Team who took second place in the District Battle. They were one question away from going into overtime against Soldotna Montessori.

My favorite part about Battle of the Books is when we are all reading together and we end up finding out something CRAZY! Sad, funny, or weird we can go through it together. It’s the best way to read a sad book, like Pax by Sara Pennypacker.

Thank you Jamie Gonzales for sponsoring our Battle of the Books teams!! We enjoyed the snacks you provided to keep our minds engaged and the Wildman’s Ice Cream Gift Certificates.

I’m in love with Battle of the Books! It pushes me to read more and to learn more. My favorite part is all of the new books that I get to read. Some that I wouldn’t of read otherwise .
