Dear Members, Happy Valentines Day and Presidents Day! Thankfully the cold snap has released its hold on us. I am looking forward to the upcoming forecast if the weatherman is not way off base. The Upper Kenai River Guide has been completed and is at the printers. The new issue should be to us later this month. You are now able to see the online version. We are starting to plan the Regatta so please keep in mind that we need all you rowers to plan on entering and have some fun. We also will need folks to help with all the other parts to make this another fun day in the Landing.

Cooper Landing Emergency Services Cooper Landing Emergency Services would like to extend our thanks to the community members and businesses who have supported CLES and helped to fundraise to keep our organization afloat. We had a busy 2023 with 125 official calls for service ranging from water rescues to medical calls to motor vehicle collisions. We are proud of how our team of volunteers and our community combined forces to make Cooper Landing a safe place for all. Our volunteer responders have dedicated so much time to training and responding that our agency was granted the Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ground Service licensure this year from the State of Alaska Office of EMS. The State of Alaska is facilitating a Firefighter One and Hazmat course for our volunteers that will keep them busy with class and skills practice multiple days per week until June. Another group of volunteers is studying to achieve EMT 1 and they are putting in some long hours as well. We thank these volunteers and their families and coworkers who are all sacrificing to support these extensive training commitments. Eleven new probationary members have been attending training and learning the ropes with our department. It is inspiring to see so many new recruits wanting to get involved and complete the necessary trainings to respond with our service at all hours of the day and night. Some of our new recruits are long time locals and others are new in town, holding down multiple jobs and still making time to volunteer.

Upcoming Events: • Training nights are every Wednesday and Sunday until Firefighter 1 is complete this spring. • Snowshoe Softball, Saturday Feb 17 at 1pm at the Community Hall. • CLES Board meeting Tuesday, Feb 20 at 6pm @ CLES • CPR party to honor Clay Adam’s birthday! March 19, time TBD @CLES - Help us celebrate our EMS Chief and Paramedic who gives so much to Cooper Landing. - Practice CPR compressions on our manikins and sign up for a class in May to learn more.

Second Place Winners in the Middle School District Competition!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS Battle of the Books is a highly competitive academic competition that requires teams to read twelve chapter books for elementary levels and ten for middle and high school levels. The books are selected by the Alaska Association of School Librarians and must meet of high quality and cover a diversity of subject areas. Students start reading the books in October and aim to complete the reading list by January. Students try to read the books as many times as possible before the District Battles.

My teammate, Molly, and I work really hard to read all of the books. We share the same excitment and love for Battle of the Books. We have been competing since 2nd grade.

-Josie

On Battle Day Cooper Landing students compete in four to five rounds against numerous other schools throughout the Kenai Peninsula. Each round consists of a number of questions that test students’ knowledge about facts and details from the books they’ve read. Teams have thirty seconds to figure out the answer and write both the book title and author on the answer sheet. One person from each team verbally announces the answer when asked by the game host.

This year Cooper Landing had a team at every grade level- a 3/4, a 5/6, a middle school, and a high school team. Competitions were held the week of February 5th. I am extremely proud of the Cooper Landing students who participated in the Battle of the Books this year. Being on the Battle Book Team is no easy feat. It takes hard work, commitment, and dedication to be a great team, as well as to read and memorize details in the books. Our students work incredibly hard and look forward to participating in this activity every year. Our 3/4 team- three third graders and one fourth grader competed in their first ever battle and did a nice job. The 5/6 team- three fifth graders and one fourth grader competed against 31 other schools and went into finals where they placed 5th! Our two sixth graders competed at the middle school level and went into finals where they earned 2nd place! Our two eighth graders rose to the challenge and competed at the high school level where they held their own in a battle with students much older than them.

The goal of Battle of the Books is to help students with reading comprehension, expand reading interests, and to promote academic excellence. If you’d like to be a future sponsor of the Battle of the Books, click the button below for ways you can support our teams. Become a Sponsor

Thank you Shirley Wilmoth and Marypat Montana for sponsoring our Battle of the Books teams!! We appreciate the money you donated for purchasing books and the sweet treats you provided to celebrate after the battles.

- Kristine Route, Battle Books Coach

Before moving to Cooper Landing, I disliked to read. But after competing in Battle of the Books I discovered that reading is actually pretty fun. I found genres I enjoy. I also enjoy reading with our group where we read together and talk about the books.

”-Sydney

Battle of the Books has been and always will be my favorite school activity! This competition has become part of my life and I can’t imagine not doing it. I love reading the variety a books chosen each year.

” -Athena
