Cooper Landing Gem- June 2023

Page 1

Dear Members,

We had a great turn out for the Regatta and the weather cooperated with sunshine. Everyone I talked with had a great time and is looking forward to next year. Thank you to all the sponsors, participants, Lisa Sweeney for the starting shot, Krissy Route for online work and pictures, KRSA for their help, Brad & Ann Hanson for timing, Eagle Landing for the terrific hot dogs and hamburgers and Sunrise Inn for having us there for the announcements and more fun. Thanks to the board members for the salad, beans and dessert and all their hard work. I apologize if I have missed anyone who participated in putting the event on, everyone’s hard work was appreciated.

The ball games will be about done by the time this edition hits the streets. It is great that we are past our “COVID” years and back to having fun with our neighbors and coworkers. As I am writing this it is pouring rain but we need it. We will allow sunshine on game days.

June is here, the fish will be swimming upstream and everyone will be hopping with tourists and Alaskans. The Chamber board normally doesn’t meet in June, July or August, but we will be having a short meeting about the middle of the month. If you have any questions or concerns for us give us a call and we can address them at the meeting.

Have a great summer – keep smiling!

Thank you,

Congratulations to Tommy Balk and Shawn Coe with Flying Cow Rafting for taking first place in the Cooper Landing Regatta! This is their third year earning the championship title. The race was close with second place- Shane Andrews and Kail Allen, only a minute behind. Third place, Kevin Ostrowski and Brian Montalbo, were hot on their heels, by only 25 seconds. See attached photo for a complete list of times.

Thank you to all who participated in the Regatta and the Raft River Clean-up! We appreciate your participation and support for the Kenai River Sportfishing Association.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for helping make this a successful event. All proceeds benefit the Kenai River Sportfishing Association and their efforts to protect the Kenai River. We raised $2,262 this year.

Thank you Lisa Dickinson, Ann and Brad Hanson, and Linnaea Gossard for helping with the Regatta. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Brian Montalbo and Kevin Ostrowski in third place, followed by Sean Norris and Adam Synder in fourth. Shawn Coe and Tommy Balk race to get ahead of Shane Andrews and Kail Allen, narrowly taking the lead.

Cooper Landing Class of 2023

Congratulations Randall Greene Bear Prepared

It’s that time of year again when the bears are fully awake after hiberation and are sitting in anticipation for the sockeye salmon to return. Being omnivores, bears will eat insects, young green vegetation, roots, fungi, small rodents, other baby animals, and any carrion (dead animals) they can find while they await their favorite food source. However, they are also attracted to your trash, your grill, and your bird feeders. This then leads bears to associate people with food, causing the potential for negative human/bear encounters when bears naturally try to defed their food sources. Help keep bears wild by picking up your garbage, keep grills clean, and taking down your bird feeder. Because a fed bear is a dead bear.
