Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center
Dear Members, Are you getting ready for a busy summer? Let’s start it off with a great 15th Annual River Regatta and the 26th Annual Softball Games. It is wonderful to have them back as a kick start to the summer. It’s a fun and traditional way to get in touch with each other after the long winter season and a good way to see the snowbirds young and old return for our great summer. Hope Mother Nature realizes it is supposed to be spring and warm up. We will be sprucing up the Chamber Office on May 12th prior to our board meeting to discuss and finalize the Regatta and other business. Please attend and help clean out the cobwebs, update your brochures, and volunteer to help at the Regatta if you aren’t a participant. Have a great, busy summer. Even though everyone is short staffed, summer will be better with a smile on your face for all of our customers. Keep on Smiling. Thank you, Cheryle James & Your Chamber Board

Cooper Landing Lynx News
May 2022
As the 2021- 2022 school year ends, we look back at all the great times we’ve had. The beginning of the year was full of excitement as the students came back to school, with some new and old faces. The district had some Covid rules we had to adhere to, but we found ways to make school easy by holding classes outside and wearing masks when we had too. We were able to continue with our traditional kid’s fishing day with the help of several local guides. It was a fun day of fishing and playing in the shallow pools. It was great to be out on the water again. October arrived with an early snowfall and Halloween came up fast. Everyone had a chance to dress up as who they really admired this year. Krissy and I pranked everyone by dressing as each other and the kids howled with laughter. We had a great day of fun inside and out as we played games and showed off our costumes. November and December were a blur. We had our annual Swag fundraiser and Krissy directed a Christmas play. The students also competed in the Great Cup Stack Up! We were able to fit in plenty of art time with ceramics, painting, and drawing. It was a lot of work and we were grateful for all the support from the community.
January’s arrival was a busy month as we had dissections, Lynx Ball, simple machines, and Battle of the Books to compete in. Our fourth grade Battle of the Books team placed second and our sixth grade team placed third. And then the real snow came! It was a fantastic start to 2022!
February and March kept us active as we skied at Alyeska, built snow forts, and sledded down the big hill behind the school. Some of the students competed in the virtual archery tournament and we had some epic dodgeball games! We were fortunate to receive lots of snow on our ski days and when the sun finally came out the mountain seemed magical. As April and May come to a close, we fill each day with learning and laughter. We had one day of fishing under the bridge and finished state testing and district assessments. We said goodbye to our principal, Mr. Hayman, who is now principal of Connections Homeschool. Our new principal is Cindy McKibbin, KPBSD Lead Interventionist & District Assessment Coordinator. We look forward to our Kindergarten Orientation this year as we expect some new students to enroll at school in the fall. Have a great summer and thanks for following us! - Mr. Gossard

Are You Bear Prepared? It’s that time of year again when the bears are fully awake after hibernation and are sitting in anticipation for the sockeye salmon to return. Being omnivores, bears will eat insects, young green vegetation, roots, fungi, small rodents, other baby animals, and any carrion (dead animals) they can find while they await their favorite food source. However, they are also attracted to your trash, your grill, and your bird feeders. This then leads bears to associate people with food, causing the potential for negative human/bear encounters when bears naturally try to defend their food sources. Help keep bears wild by picking up your garbage, keep grills clean, and take down your bird feeder. Because a fed bear is a dead bear.

Cooper Landing Community Club The Community Club is gearing up for the softball tournament on May 26th- June 4th. Everyone is so excited to have the tournament back this year! We are still looking for donations for the silent auction and also for non-profit groups that would like to earn some extra money by selling concessions at the softball tournament. If you are a business and would like to help with concessions you can always donate your earnings to one of the non-profits in town. Plan on having at least one person that will be there for the entire evening. That person will also need to attend the concession training on May 24th at 6:00 pm. Email cooperlandingcommunityclub@gmail.com to let us know if your group wants a spot or if you have a donation for the silent auction. Our next Community Club meeting is on May 19th at the Community Hall.

Iver’s mother, Mayme Ohnemus, was the Cooper Landing Senior Citizen Corp. Inc’s first president when the non-profit was formed in 1999. Mayme was also the founder of the Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners when she was president of the Cooper Landing Community Club in 1997. Mike Hack bought the player piano from David Wheeler. 3 Greetings Seniors from Cooper Landing CLSCCI Campus. This winter 2021-22 has been a trying time for CLSCCI. There have been many maintenance issues with heating, septic systems, no water due to pump issues, and apartment appliances replacements. Expensive repairs that were necessary, but CLSCCI stepped up to the challenge. Over the last two years, we expanded storage parking above Raven’s View, and continued to deal with drainage issues for the parking lot. Brandon Harrison and family did an excellent job this winter keeping the Campus parking lots clear of snow and well sanded. Norman Starkey has been very helpful with helping with maintenance issues. The Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners remain true to their mission every Monday morning. Thanks to Mike De Angelis for driving and his wife Brigitte for the necessary reports, Larry Grant, Mona Painter, and Ken Green for being ride-along picker-uppers, and to Gary Galbraith and Nick Vanderhoff for helping on their own. The Sunrise Inn happily stayed open for Monday brunch after the cleanups in CL and Crown Point. Since the early weeks of the lockdown in 2020, the CLSCCI Board met remotely on Zoom. Our most recent meeting on April 5 was again in-person. Barring any more serious Covid outbreaks, the Board will continue in-person meetings. The Endowment Committee recently gave generous grants to nonprofits which were greatly appreciated: Cooper Landing Community Club for cemetery beautification and survey, Helen Rhode Park revitalization, and enclosing the pavilion; Cooper Landing Emergency Services for radio upgrades; CLSCCI for Community Garden boxes; Cooper Landing School for gym equipment; and Moose Pass Fire Department for medical equipment. At the May general meeting and by absentee ballot, the CLSCCI Board will be electing new members. Shirley Wilmoth who has been on the board for many years and has served with much dedication as the Vice President and Treasurer is not on the ballot this time. She will be missed, but will always be a presence for advice and consultation. Ken Green, President Glen Maupin, with a tiny friend, died March 20. Glen
was a CLSCCI Board member and a friend of many. Grace Reger and Administrative Assistant Jamie Gonzales bring loads of food from Glen’s apartment to share with residents. Mario Carboni will play at the celebration of Glen’s life this summer.
