USDA ADDRESSES DISCRIMINATION WITH $2 BILLION IN PAYMENTS TO BLACK FARMERS As a part of the Inflation Reduction Act’s Discrimination Financial Assistance Program (DFAP), The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) began issuing payments to thousands of Black farmers in the country that have faced racial discrimination from the agency’s lending practices, before 2021. Of the approximately 60,000 applications that were received, 43,000 Black farmers were approved and began receiving payments in early August, with an average payment equaling to $82,000. John Boyd, president and founder of the National Black Farmers Association (NBFA), knows the heavy burden the American Black farmer has struggled with all too well. For

more than 40 years, Boyd has been at the forefront of the fight against systematic discrimination in the farming industry and has persisted through decades long lobbying and advocacy for land retention, access to loans, economic development, and civil rights for Black farmers that need it most. The New York Times reports that the Agriculture Department is still analyzing applications and payouts to determine demographic information about relief recipients. When Boyd was asked about the recent settlement, he said, “It’s long overdue. These are payments that farmers desperately need. Justice comes slow for Black people.” —— LeKeisha Edwards

ASK ANY PET OWNER, and they will say that traveling with their fur baby is top of the list. According to a recent American Pet Products Association (APPA) survey, 78% of American pet owners hit the road with their furry family members. Are you ready to take your best fluffy friend on a trip? Here are tips to get you and your pet ready and ensure you have fun along the way. • Check with your vet for medicine refills, anxiety pills, or vaccinations required or recommended for your destination. • Request a hard copy of their medical record vaccinations, recent lab work, medicine, etc. • Before leaving, save several pet photos on your phone. You’ll need them if your pet is missing. • Consider microchipping your pet. A missing pet is exceptionally heartbreaking. Microchips and collars with a phone number are the best way to reconnect. • Select a crate for the ride. Your pet should be able to stand, turn, and comfortably relax in the crate. Create a space of comfort, calm, and security. • Crates and carriers can be their safe space. Make crates a special place with their favorite toys, treats, and a comfy blanket. Practice having them go inside several days before leaving. • Cats should travel crated for car and air travel, while 12

dogs can be harnessed/buckled for car rides. Help your kitty cat relax with pheromone spray in its crate. • Never let pets roam the vehicle. Injuries to both humans and animals are likely in case of sudden stops or accidents. • Dogs love the air in their faces; however, for safety reasons, keep their heads inside the car away from objects that may cause injuries. • Plan your route with rest stops. Potty breaks and quick walks keep everyone road-ready. • Pack their bed, food and water bowls, toys, and treats. • Are you staying with family and friends? Check with your host regarding other pets in the home or area. • Double-check hotel and Airbnb pet rules and regulations. Pay close attention to guidelines and fees. Ask about close pet parks, local vets, and any neighborhood or city animal ordinances. • Traveling by plane can differ from airline to airline. Contact your airline several days ahead to reserve space for your pet (some airlines limit the number of pets per flight) and ask about the guidelines and fees. • Most major airports have pet “nature rooms.” These rooms are for public use and may include unfamiliar animals. Most of all, have loads of fun. Take lots of photos and videos. You will cherish the memories long after the trip.

CHEF TANYA CHAVIS
C
By Jonell Whitt
CHEF TANYA CHAVIS FEARLESSLY EMBRACED a new chapter in her life by stepping out on faith, leaving behind her family and friends in Cleveland, Ohio, and embarking on a journey to Atlanta, GA to pursue her career in the beauty industry. As she settled into her new environment, she was captivated by the multitude of entrepreneurial opportunities available to individuals of color. It was this realization that ignited a fire within her, compelling her to redefine her career path and carve out a new and inspiring direction for herself. After careful consideration, she made the decision to exchange her curling irons, flat irons and long hours in the beauty salon for pots, pans, several trips to Restaurant Depot and long hours in the kitchen with a new path in the culinary world. Chavis allocated her talents from creating beautiful hair styles to creating "pretti plates." She commenced to executive her plan using what was immediately accessible to her and began preparing meals in her Atlantic Station condo. Recognizing that 90% of her clients placed personalized orders and admired her cooking, she resolved to transition from her home kitchen to a full brick and mortar catering kitchen. In the beginning, Chef Tanya clung fervently to the dream of owning her very own food truck with unwavering

TAKING LEAPS Rachel G. Scott inspires through life-changing book Taking the 5 Leaps: Experiencing God’s Faithfulness as You Respond to His Call By Utamu Belle
i
IT IS NO SECRET THAT NAVIGATING through life presents its own unique challenges. While many long for greater fulfillment, it is sometimes difficult to make that necessary leap, which may propel us to experience the life of our dreams. A lack of motivation, determination, faith and clarity; coupled with fears and uncertainty of the future are often limiting factors which prohibit us from living life confidently. In Taking the 5 Leaps: Experiencing God’s Faithfulness as You Respond to His Call, author, podcaster, and leaping mentor Rachel G. Scott shares helpful leaps we should take as we pursue life’s calling. In this book, Rachel introduces readers to the importance of embracing risk, building confidence, and finding 22

peace as we prioritize our goals and dreams. The author reveals that through prayer, perseverance, and leaping, we gain a deeper sense of fulfillment, purpose, and resilience. With spiritual affirmations for meditation and personal leap stories, Taking the 5 Leaps give insight and inspiration on how to prepare, plan, and execute an exciting, and at times, intimidating leap. The featured leaps that Rachel illustrates include: • The Leaper’s Setup: Each leap comes with challenges that teach us new lessons that are meant to build our confidence, resilience, and faith. Even if we feel unqualified or unprepared, we should trust that God will provide and care for us.
• The Fisherman’s Leap: This leap requires a person to leave what is familiar to them (job or family) to pursue their calling. This leap is not about what one will do but who they will assist. • The Shepherd’s Leap: This leap requires a physical relocation. Although all the details may not be finalized, we have faith that all will be revealed to ensure a beneficial transition. We are required to let go of people and places close to us and believe that what we are walking into is just as important as what we are walking away from. • The Builder’s Leap: This leap is required when a person may, for example, choose to temporarily leave their job to fulfill their calling or care for a loved one with the possibility of a future return. While we may struggle with the commitments and adjustments during this time, we must have faith and understand when and how the season will conclude. • The Tentmaker’s Leap: This leap may occur when our job helps to fund our calling. We can fulfill this, even while pursuing our current job and keep an open heart as to what or where God may lead us next.
• The Trailblazer’s Leap: This happens when we have completed the other leaps as we confidently choose faith and boldly step into the unknown, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar elements of God’s plans. Our determination and faith become an example to others. Throughout Taking the 5 Leaps, Rachel reminds readers that although our leaps may change during different seasons of our life, God will provide us with what is necessary to make each leap. She also shares insight on the difference between a calling and a vision, preparing for doubt and hesitation, as well as embracing hurdles. Rachel is a devoted wife, mother, entrepreneur, and Ohio native. She is the Founder of the I Can’t Come Down Movement and host of the podcast, Taking the Leaps. Rachel and her husband, Willie, have a blended family of seven children and are founders of Better Than Blended, a ministry providing resources, support, and community to blended families. Her social media @iamrachelgscott and website, RachelGScott.com also offers a unique online quiz to determine your leaping style.

The Bronner Brothers’ story is one of perseverance, faith, and unwavering commitment to their community. From their roots in rural Georgia to becoming leaders in the beauty industry, Nathaniel and Arthur Bronner’s legacy continues to inspire future generations. Their journey exemplifies the power of hard work, family values, and faith in achieving extraordinary success. Nathaniel H. Bronner Sr. was born in 1914 in rural southern Georgia. Raised in a large family of 11 children, Nathaniel learned the values of hard work, honesty, and good company from his parents. Despite the hardships of his early life, including the terror of the Ku Klux Klan, Nathaniel’s determination and faith never wavered. His father, Gene, emphasized the importance of education, creating a home library to nurture his children’s minds.
Arthur often described the numerous challenges he and his brother faced, including the loss of their father’s business and home to the Ku Klux Klan. Despite multiple health issues and other obstacles, Arthur’s resilience and sense of humor remained intact. Arthur’s contributions to the Bronner Bros. were instrumental in establishing the largest African-American hair show in the country, the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show.
Moving to Atlanta for high school and college, Nathaniel faced the challenges of segregation but remained focused on his goals. He joined the Butler Street Methodist Church and the YMCA, where he continued to build on his spiritual foundation. Nathaniel’s business journey began with a job delivering newspapers, and through his unwavering faith and work ethic, he transformed his life and built a multimillion-dollar enterprise that employed hundreds. Nathaniel Bronner Sr. passed away in 1993, leaving behind a legacy of putting God first, family second, and business third.

Yung Joc and The Streetz Morning Takeover Dominate the Radio Airwaves with Over 35 Years of Entertainment

By Jonell Whitt
YUNG JOC AND THE “Streetz Morning Takeover” dominate airwaves in several markets. It’s their 8th year celebrating success not only in Atlanta, but as a syndicated show. Joc sees himself as a natural leader and always wanted to be part of something successful. Whenever faced with a challenge, he consistently confronts it head-on. As an artist, producer, actor, and now a radio host, he epitomizes a team player, taking pride in his ability to discern the positive attributes, strengths, and weaknesses of others. “At times, you find yourself in a position where you can be the catalyst for growth without even realizing it. Even in the realm of the music industry, I never aspired to assume a leadership role. Instead, through music, I guided individuals to a certain point before being guided by a force, which happened to be radio and television for me.” When Joc received the news, their show was going into syndication, he exclaimed the following: “That meant that other territories were accepting of our services that we rendered and that was to inform our culture. Now it’s evident that people are embracing the message that we are sending. Now that means it’s just time to go harder. You look up one day and you think, ‘Shawty can tell jokes until people are tired of listening; Yung Joc can rap as long as people want to hear him rap; reality TV can only go so far unless you are moving up the ranks.’ Yes, it’s made Joc a household name, but I don’t have my own show yet. You look at the life of Tom Joyner and then the life of Steve Harvey and I’m like with radio I can retire. There is a lot of longevity in radio.” Mz Shyneka exudes absolute confidence in delivering the latest breaking news through her incredibly popular daily segment “Word on the Street”. Thriving in the world of entertainment news, she has gained global recognition for forging meaningful connections with celebrities and creating unforgettable moments through spontaneous and informal interviews. This sophisticated trendsetter actively engages with community leaders, executives, and celebrities from all corners of the entertainment industry, and is frequently 28

sought after to host some of Atlanta’s most prestigious clubs and major events. Shyneka is no stranger to the spotlight, radiating confidence in every step. Her memorable appearances on CBS This Morning, BET, FOX, VH1, Dish Nation, the Rickey Smiley Show, Real Housewives of Atlanta, and her compelling vulnerability on Iyanla Fix My Life have captivated audiences and continually won their hearts. Shawty Shawty depicts radio as a unique platform for testing their talent and connections, emphasizing eight years of syndicated success. Yung Joc and the “Streetz Morning Takeover” team, alongside the production crew, showcase a remarkable bond and genuine friendship. The environment fosters authenticity, allowing everyone to be themselves. Listeners are drawn to the genuine talent, as the radio creates an invisible yet palpable mood for its audience. The seasoned comedian, a 30-year veteran and talent of Wild ‘N’ Out, triumphed over a life-threatening car accident and the challenges of the pandemic, thanks to the support of a longtime friend who nursed him back to health. His resilience and maturation are evident as he has found and married his soulmate, all while remaining unwavering and consistent in his comedic pursuits. The significant moment when he invited Yung Joc to collaborate on comedy skits led to a lasting friendship and professional partnership, with the two also working together in radio. Their bond, which originated in their youth, was further strengthened through their shared love for comedy. Yung Joc and the Streetz Morning Takeover featuring Mz Shyneka, and Shawty Shawty continue their unstoppable journey to claim the top spot month after month as the ultimate morning show dream team. Their energy is infectious. Core Radio Group has recently extended Yung Joc’s contract for multiple years, a testament to his enduring appeal. Listeners eagerly tune in every Monday to Friday from 6am-10am, immersing themselves in the laughter-inducing segments “The Love Doc Joc,” “The Date Dilemma,” and “Are You Smarter Than Yung Joc” week after week.

SIX DEGREES Connecting brands and talents with people By Tash Van Doimen

BEING THE CEO OF A BLACK-OWNED, Millennial-led, culturally aware advertising/marketing agency is no easy feat, but Brian Wright makes it look effortless. In fact, Wright just received Ad Age’s Gold Award for Small Agency of the Year. His company, Six Degrees, a 360-marketing agency, was recognised for its impressive work across experiential, social, and brand strategy. Six Degrees has worked with big companies such as HBO, Amazon, NFL, Pandora, and Footlocker, guiding these brands and several talents with creative, effective, forwardlooking campaigns that resonate with their target audience and drive pop culture. According to Wright, what makes Six Degrees different is its record for remaining ‘authentic to the product and community’ being serviced. It’s about ‘creating an immersive brand of activation… being authentic to whatever message you are trying to get across’. Wright explained that his company keeps it ‘real’, ‘highly researched’, and focused on the messaging it is trying to convey to the target audience. In Wrights’ words, it goes with the saying, “We know your audience because we are your audience’. His agency is both millennial and Gen-Z-led and caters to Gen Alpha, in effect catering to the very target audience that consumes many of the products they market. Six Degrees created by Wright and his business partner Reagan Fresnel, was named after the six degrees of separation strategy, the idea that anyone can be connected to another person through a chain of acquaintances with no more than five intermediaries. 30

For Wright, it is important for his agency to also connect with the community, “We are business to business, that is the business model of having an advertising agency, but we market and kind of feel more business to consumer’. A unique characteristic focused on educating people on what advertising agencies are and do. While his company does have a niche in social media campaigns and micro-influencing, which has high engagement as opposed to a high following, Six Degrees has a wide portfolio that covers a broad range of services offered during its six successful years of existence and plans to expand in the coming months. Wright also remains true to himself and his passions by giving back to his community. Along with his partner, Fresnel, Wright created CAMP HBCYouth in 2023, an educational summer day camp catering to children from pre-K to elementary school (fifth grade). Founded on the principles and values of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), CAMP HBCYouth fosters positive change by catering to minority youth in traditionally underserved communities. It offers access to development resources, inter alia education, nutrition, the arts and workplace/leadership skills, with partner universities, including Tennessee State University, Morehouse College and Morgan State University.

WINEAUX WISDOM
Bubbles and Bliss: The Art of Celebrating with Champagne
GUTTER CREDITS

WORDS BY SHAINA TAYLOR
WHEN THE OCCASION CALLS FOR A TOUCH of elegance and effervescence, nothing says celebration quite like champagne. For centuries, this sparkling wine, with its iconic bubbles and sophisticated aura, has been synonymous with success, joy, and luxury. From the vineyards of the Champagne region in France, to glamorous parties popping bottles worldwide in the VIP section, champagne has carved its niche as the quintessential beverage of choice. It’s “summer, summer, summertime,” and celebration season has begun. In addition to Upscale’s 35th Anniversary, there will be a host of weddings, graduations, achievements, and more. Here is some “Wineaux Wisdom” that will prepare you for enjoying what R&B singer Ne-yo referred to as the “Champagne Life”: 1) CHOOSING THE PERFECT BOTTLE When selecting a champagne, consider the occasion and your guests’ preferences as well as your budget. Brut, Demi-Sec, Rosé, and Vintage are styles that are popular and easy to find. Brut, the most common style of champagne, is dry and versatile, making it ideal for toasts and food pairings. It’s also a safe choice for most palates. Rosé, with its blush hue and fruit-forward flavors, is visually stunning and pairs well with a range of dishes, from duck to red fruit desserts. Demi-Sec is a great choice for guests that are being introduced to champagne. This style may be more appealing than its counterparts, as residual sugar has been added for sweetness. Lastly, Vintage champagnes are only produced from grapes of a single exceptional year. Vintage champagne is rare and often more complex and expensive, as it’s typically reserved for truly special celebrations.
2) SERVING AND SAVORING To fully appreciate champagne, serving it correctly and at the proper temperature is quintessential. Chill the bottle to 46-50°F before serving and use a champagne flute or tulip glass to preserve the bubbles and concentrate the aromas. When opening the bottle, do so with care. Hold the cork and gently twist the bottle to release it with a soft sigh rather than a loud pop to preserve the effervescence. Then, pour the champagne slowly down the side of the glass to maintain the bubbles. 3) THE ART OF THE TOAST A champagne toast is more than just a tradition; it’s an art form. Here are just a few tips for a memorable toast: Be Sincere: Speak from the heart, whether you’re toasting a loved one, a colleague, or the occasion itself. Be Concise: A good toast is short and sweet. Aim for one to two minutes depending on the occasion, or a quick and funny oneliner for casual events. Raise Your Glass: Hold your glass by the stem, and after the toast, clink glasses gently to avoid breaking the delicate flutes. Celebrating with champagne is about more than just the sip. It’s about the experience, the shared moments of joy, and the memories created. So, the next time you find yourself amidst a celebration, lift your glass, savor the bubbles, and toast to life’s beautiful moments. Or, simply enjoy a glass or a bottle just because it’s within reach… Cheers! upscalemagazine.com

I am a woman that is blessed to do so many things that I love.
I am an actress, an Emmy Award winning host, a three-time New York Times Best Selling Author and an entrepreneur. I actually get to do these incredible things that I am so passionate about and I am just getting started. It’s a beautiful sunny California morning and actress, author, and entrepreneur, Tabitha Brown or Tab, as she is affectionately known to her family and friends, is preparing for an upcoming media shoot. The Emmy Award winning, Eden, North Carolina born, vegan food sensation, that has captured the hearts of over 13 million people combined across all social media platforms, takes time to sit with upscale and let us in on what she and “Donna” have been up to at one of her several product lines—a hair care line called, Donna’s Recipe. With a number of lessons and catchphrases that her fans have come to know and adore, like, “Have a Good Day, but if You Can’t, Don’t You Dare Go Messin’ Up Nobody Else’s,” Brown’s captivating spirit, eclectic energy, and everyday wisdom has been experienced by millions throughout her products, brand partnerships, and shows—including Tab Time, the YouTube Original series that won her the “Outstanding Host” Children’s & Family Emmy award in 2023, winning the category against four other hit shows, including Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman’s Kid’s Baking Championship on the Food Network. 36 UPSCALEMAGAZINE / u p s c a l e m a g a z i n e . c o m
With all Tabitha has accomplished and a schedule that reflects her high demand, many have not had a chance to hang out in Donna’s kitchen, but upscale relished the opportunity to do so. “Everybody knows me for my cooking, but not for my baking. Tab does not bake, but Donna makes sweet treats for your hair,” Tabitha says.
journeyed from store to store, reading labels, and not being able to find what she was looking for, Tabitha went back to her natural hair styling skills and decided to create her own product. Her several years’ experience as a natural hair stylist motivated her to create a clean product: one that aligned with her wellness journey and would produce superior results.
Donna is the name Tabitha gave her hair a few years ago while cooking live on Facebook after noticing how her hair was growing in after doing the Big Chop, “I’m a have to call her Donna,” she said in reference to Don King’s famous hair style.
After trying different variations, she created an oil that met both criteria’s. The result was a product that helped to strengthen and lengthen her hair, while allowing her to stay true to the natural lifestyle she embarked on. “I started thinking, maybe I should do this for other people. My hair is growing back healthy and strong, and I’m getting good results. I know other people are also looking for clean products.”
Donna’s Recipe was created out of a need to treat and heal her own thinning hair after a time of sickness. Tabitha suffers from spinal stenosis, (a narrowing of the spinal canal that can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, causing pain in the back and legs), that at times, forces her to sleep on her back for weeks at a time, ultimately affecting her hair. “My hair began to thin in the back, like a baby’s hair, and I realized I needed to find something to help strengthen it.” Having just begun her vegan journey and wanting to stick with her wellness plan she searched for products. As she
Thus, Donna’s Recipe was born in 2020. As the world slowed down due to the Covid pandemic, Tabitha ironically became busier as an entrepreneur, and she knew she needed a team. She decided to do what she has always done when seeking answers: she prayed to God and asked to be blessed with the right team. A few months later, her sister friend, Gina Woods, came to Tabitha with an exciting idea and presentation for Donna’s Recipe.

Gina, a Brand Strategist and serial entrepreneur, has experience growing multiple brands and ultimately became Co-founder of Donna’s Recipe. Throughout their friendship, the two had discussed multiple ventures and seemed to land upon one that was just right. “I told Gina that I had been praying for the right team for months. Our collaboration in creating Donna’s Recipe, led to a core vision in providing high-quality, natural hair care solutions that promote healthy hair growth, and for it to be an enjoyable experience while caring for your hair.” “The brand aimed to foster a sense of self-love, confidence, and empowerment among our audience who we’ve affectionately named ‘Donna’s Cousins,’” says Woods, “We achieve this by offering products that not only improve the health of their hair, but also contribute positively to their overall well-being.”
In conclusion of her time with upscale, Tabitha considers the totality of all she has been blessed to achieve and where she is headed. When asked if she could sum up her body of work in a few words, she says with gratitude, “I am a woman who is blessed to do many things. I am an actress first, an Emmy Award winning host, a three-time New York Times Best Selling Author, and an entrepreneur. I actually get to do these things I am passionate about and I am just getting started.”
Left to right: Gina Woods and Tabitha Brown
Donna’s Recipe officially launched on January 1, 2021 with a hair strengthening oil and the team shipping directly from their homes due to the pandemic. Today the line boasts eight products that are created, produced, and self-funded (they’re debt free cousins) by the formidable duo. With all she has her hands and heart in, when the Emmy award winner was asked how she stays motivated she simply says, “I’m still alive and I still got work to do. Until God takes me out of here, he still has something for me to do and I’m motivated by finding out what that is, every day. Along with spending time with family, eating healthy raw and whole foods, working out, and keeping a good calendar.” In addition to Donna’s Recipe Tabitha Brown’s empire keeps growing as a result of her multiple brand partnerships, including her partnership with Target (where you’ll find Donna’s Recipe in select locations). On July 21, 2024, Tabitha introduced a new line of wines, sold exclusively at Target, nationwide. The new line consists of “Hello There” a Red Blend (for Tabitha) and “Love y’all” a Moscato, in honor of her sentiment towards her fans. “Love y’all” also happens to be a favorite of Chance’s, Tabitha’s husband of 20 years. Her love and appreciation for wine comes after learning the art of Tasting years ago. When given the opportunity to develop the line, she says she had to do it. “My partnership with Target is so meaningful and purposeful. From the colors to the patterns, they allow me to come up with things I want to do, and I’m excited about it.” Tabitha leaves aspiring entrepreneurs looking to develop businesses in the beauty or hair market with sage advice. “First, do it your way, even if products like yours already exist. Take the sneaker space for example. You have multiple brands that all make sneakers, but each is its own brand. Don’t try to imitate, instead make it yours. Secondly, partner with people you can trust and those that are like-minded. Lastly, consider it a blessing if your partner is smarter than you in areas that you lack knowledge in. Do not let your ego get in the way when you create business.”
“I told Gina that I had been praying for the right team for months. Our collaboration in creating Donna’s Recipe, led to a core vision in providing highquality, natural hair care solutions that promote healthy hair growth, and for it to be an enjoyable experience while caring for your hair.”

“The young adults decided to do something different and wanted it to be a cruise,” says Sylathia M. Johnson, one of the organizers. “It allows us to keep some of our traditions, makes it less work, and offers unique, exciting experiences we can incorporate into our suggested activities.” With the assistance of the family known as “DMB”, Upscale has curated an imaginative and innovative list of tips to help you plan your awesome family reunion cruise.
Ship courtesy of Carnival Cruise Lines * Family photos: Leslie E. Royal
Many family reunion planners are electing to ditch the typical cookouts and go for this thrilling, all-inclusive option of fabulous food, fun in the sun, and family fellowship on a cruise. The Dukes-Murphy-Burgess Family Reunion members opted to celebrate their 46th
year reunion with an amazing cruise to The Bahamas in August 2024.
1. SAIL WITH A CRUISE LINE THAT IS ECONOMICAL AND GIVES GREAT PERKS.
The family selected Carnival Cruise Line’s Elation. (www.Carnival.com.) They were given a $50 credit, a bottle of sparkling cider, and a tray of gourmet chocolates per stateroom, as well as free room upgrades. Other cruise lines for readers to consider are Royal Caribbean (www. RoyalCaribbean.com), Norwegian (www.NCL.com), and Disney (www. disneycruise.disney.go.com/).
2. CREATE A FREE FACEBOOK EVENT GROUP.
This allows everyone to see important info, reminders, and updates. Create a hashtag and invite family members and friends to join the fun.
3. GET GIFTS AND GIVEAWAYS. Ask sponsors to donate items for the gift bags, special events, and the hospitality suites. Plan a fundraiser to defray costs. The DMB family held a silent online auction which was supported by friends in the community. Contact the Convention and Visitors Bureau in the port city of sailing. The Jacksonville CVB donated some great swag to the group that included lip balm, toys for the kids, hand sanitizers, and postcards. (www.VisitJacksonville.com) 50

4. ORDER COOL FAMILY REUNION T-SHIRTS.
The group wore official t-shirts with the family’s name, a cruise ship, and family tree on it. In a creative twist, they wore “Most Likely To…” cruise tees ordered from Amazon.com. On the Lido Deck, they had a Video Stroll with them excitedly saying what they would most likely do as their family reunion banner was held overhead.
5. RESERVE AN UPSCALE HOTEL IN THE PORT CITY.
Because some may not be able to go on a cruise, have an event for the entire family at a hotel in the city. The DMB family selected the Hyatt Regency Hotel Jacksonville Riverfront as the host hotel for family members to spend the night resting, relaxing, and reconnecting before boarding the ship. Like their group, you can enjoy a hospitality suite with cocktails, light bites, TV time, and gift bags pick up. (www.Hyatt.com)
6. PLAN EXCITING EVENTS ABOARD THE SHIP.
Led by Carnival Elation Cruise Director Chryssi, the ship had it all with the White Hot Party, 80s Rock n Glow Party, Motown Night, Movie Night and so much more. The group added a “Pop-Up Meet & Greet” on the Lido Deck, “Smooth Sailing Ashro Expo” on the Empress Deck, and a DMB Wine Flight in the Dining Room. A sponsor, Ashro.com donated gifts for an interactive drawing.
7. HAVE LIMITED MEETUPS OFF THE SHIP.
Identify the island backdrop and take a group pic in front of it. Then allow everyone to go in all directions for excursions and to spend intimate time together.
8. ENCOURAGE INVOLVEMENT.
Everyone’s opinion matters. Throughout the planning process and while on the cruise, let members share thrilling and fun things the group can do. Carnival can help too. HERE, WE SIT DOWN WITH SIMONE TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT MAKES “LISA” TICK AND HOW THIS RISING STAR KEEPS BEAUTY DRAMA IN CHECK ON AND OFF SET WORDS BY JOCELYN AMADOR PHOTOS COURTESY PEACOCK
What’s it like to shift Bel-Air’s setting from high school to full-on summer vacay for this show season? It was nice to be out of those [school] halls and it was nice to have those fun activities that we were doing [for filming]! When you’re in high school, your life kind of expands exponentially in summertime. I love it, especially for “Lisa.” Her swimming career and that story line is expanding, which is cool. “Lisa” is training for the Olympic trials—and toying with whether or not that dream is going to stay alive. But either way, she works really, really hard for it. I love that story coming back. I feel like that [story] kind of withered in Season 2 and it came back really strong in Season 3. Like the change in the show’s scenery, will we see something new develop with the relationship between “Will” (actor Jabari Banks) and “Lisa” this season? Honestly, I feel like “Lisa” was played with in the [show’s] first and second seasons! This season they have their own ambitions…I feel high school is such a safe and guarded world where that stuff doesn’t really matter or come into play much. But in the summer, and with them both being such headstrong and ambitious people, that’s kind of a real-life hurdle that they have to go through. They have to figure out who they are together and who they are as people alongside each other. Ultimately, I feel like this is the first season where we see them really bond tighter in a sure way. You play a swimmer on Bel-Air, but do you actually like to swim? I do love to swim! I moved to L.A. because of the show and I’m always at the beach, hopefully, [at least] twice a week. I’m very happy that we [“Lisa”] are very similar it’s very cool. I love salt water rather than chlorine, though…I just drench my hair in deep conditioner and then I go into the ocean and go about my day! 52

IT’S A VIBE…Season 3 of hit drama Bel-Air discovers how co-stars Jabari Banks and Simone Joy Jones, as “Will” and “Lisa,” find out lessons can be learned beyond the classroom.
Speaking of hair, how much input do you have regarding how you wear your hair on Bel-Air for your role? I knew I wanted to keep “Lisa” Natural, because I am. I have always been Natural! I’ve never relaxed my hair. I’ve always been in love with my [hair] pattern even though it’s a lot of work. I I didn’t want to make a complete 360 [change] for the character in this situation. I feel that was important for Black girls to see Natural hair, especially onscreen. We’ve have had a journey with “Lisa” and her hair…And honesty, I feel like we paint a picture of a girl just trying to figure it out, especially when you’re a swimmer, it changes your options for hair. You can’t straighten it a lot because you’re in the water, you have to wash it because of the chlorine [in the pool]. With Season 3, I feel we have a little bit more freedom: She’s got a little color in her hair now, we’re just watching her grow up in a way and I think that’s cool…I feel we have found such a sexy edge with “Lisa’s” look this season. We have it in a curly, down situation with light color. I’m just living my best life with this one [look]! On set, are hair pieces used to enhance your look? Oh yeah, absolutely. We’ve dyed my hair a lighter brown and we’ve added clip-ins. Sometimes we’ll do hair pieces to have it long because “Lisa” now has long hair—which I’m living for! Can you share the best hair tip you’ve picked up from the Bel-Air hair team? They taught me about how much moisture my hair needed. I felt like my hair was pretty moisturized. But they were like, “Your hair is so thirsty!” I think it’s because I have high porosity hair. They said I needed lots of moisture: drinking water, washing my hair and then sealing it with oil. I use a high-quality moisturizer… [Bel-Air hairstylist] Robbi Rogers has her own line. I’ve been using that and my hair has grown a lot from it. What are some of the things you do on your own to keep your hair looking great? What helps my hair to grow is to have my hair in mini twists and keep them moisturized. When I have my hair like that for a month,
I wanted to keep “Lisa” Natural, because I am. I’ve never relaxed my hair. I’ve always been in love with my pattern even though it’s a lot of work. I didn’t want to make a complete 360 [change] for the character in this situation. I feel that was important for Black girls to see Natural hair, especially onscreen. my hair will grow. I also love hair pieces and different colored wigs. Now, I also love clip ins. I love my Natural texture but, honestly, I want it long, I want to flip it. And so I feel natural clip ins, with my same texture, adds a little “weight” to it and I can flip it and swing it around for the drama! When it comes to juggling a busy schedule, what works for you? I got my yoga certification and I do yoga pretty much every day. I did my hot yoga this morning, that is my favorite. And so with yoga, I’ve also learned about meditation and making sure I have time to re-center myself. I’m a musician, too. So writing and reflecting on my own experience has been really, really helpful in just collecting my own thoughts. Tell us more about your music… I have an album called Magnet coming out and I’m just so excited about it!! I’ve built such a beautiful community of musicians out here in LA and I’ve got all the mixes, there’s some jazz influences in there. I went to Carnegie-Mellon University for musical theater and I always had a big love for complex orchestrations and storytelling. Would “Lisa” ever sing on the show? No, “Lisa” doesn’t sing! I feel like the writers sometimes ask me if she can sing but it has to make sense. It would be a cute moment, but I don’t want to take away from who “Lisa” is. I want “Lisa” to feel like her and not Simone. So how would you best describe “Lisa” in Season 3 of Bel-Air? Headstrong, unpredictable… I feel she loses a bit of her “sense” this season. It gets a little crazy which I’m excited about. I’m excited for fans to see a different side of “Lisa.” She’s definitely loosened up a little bit but in a way that she acts outside of herself. I have a line where I say: “What…was I thinking?” And I hope we all feel that moment [on the show] because it’s justified. upscalemagazine.com

GRACE HAMILTON, KNOWN to her more than 4.5M fans and followers (across all social media platforms) as Spice, the Queen of Dancehall. Donned in her signature blue hair, she has captivated hearts across the world for 25 years with classic hits such as “ So Me Like It”, “Romping Shop” and “Go Down Deh”, which got a coveted spot on President Barack Obama’s 2021 favorite music playlist. Her latest album, Mirror 25, promises the signature dancehall hits filled with liberation and empowerment that her fans love, while also being her most reflective album to date. Entering the music scene in 1999, Spice has earned numerous accolades crowning her as a trailblazer, philanthropist and celebrated entrepreneur. Additionally, she’s no stranger to the genre of reality television as a current cast member of MTV’s Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta. Spice’s acclaim spans further than music, reaching the world of fashion and beauty. Recognized by VOGUE as the “Fashion Forward Queen of Dancehall” for her captivating on stage style and fashion statements that have greatly influenced street style. As the reigning female dancehall artist, she has the most charted entries on Billboard’s Reggae Albums lists. With over 95 songs and 4 EPs/albums, she has worked with musical giants such as Missy Elliot, Neyo, Shaggy, Sean Paul and Busta Rhymes. In celebration of her silver musical anniversary, Spice wanted to give her fans a more in depth look into who she is and the woman she has become. No longer tied to a contract that didn’t serve her, Mirror 25 allows her to tell her story her way marking her official debut as an independent artist and Executive Producer. This pivotal move in her career has now bore fruit as Spice’s charttopping album, ‘Mirror 25’ debuted as the #1 album on Reggae iTunes chart, #2 in the USA and UK all genres, #1 in Israel all genres, and #3 in Canada for all genres charts, within just minutes after its release–debuting as the highest charting album for a Jamaican artist on iTunes in this era. Forever a champion of her home country, Jamaica, Spice continues to give back through her foundation, the Grace Hamilton Women’s Empowerment Foundation. This past year, she donated $5M (Jamaican dollars) to provide school clothes and supplies (vouchers) for students and is on track to double it next year. “I know that education is the key to a successful future. I wanted to remind women that it’s important to have these kids in school so that they can get a proper education. When asked what is the biggest lesson she’s learned throughout her career, she left us with these words: “Losses are lessons. When we lose something or it doesn’t go according to our plan there is a lesson to it. When you’re having those bad times, think of the lessons you’re learning and not just as a mistake.” To find more information on the Grace Hamilton Foundation, go to Spiceofficial.com
CELEBRATING HBCU PRIDE THROUGH FASHION BY DR. COURTNEY HAMMONDS
FASHION IN THE EVER-EVOLVING world of fashion, cultural narratives often serve as powerful catalysts for creativity and innovation. One such narrative is the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which has increasingly influenced mainstream fashion. At the heart of this movement is Fairell Merritt, the visionary owner of PROUD HBCU GRAD apparel. Merritt’s brand is not just about clothing; it’s about celebrating heritage, education, and Black excellence through fashion. Merritt’s designs are bold, unapologetic, and deeply rooted in the pride of HBCU culture. His apparel line, which includes everything from statement hoodies to stylish accessories, is a testament to the enduring legacy of these institutions. The brand has gained significant traction, resonating with both HBCU alumni and those who admire the resilience and achievements of these historic schools. The impact of PROUD HBCU GRAD extends beyond just the campus grounds. Merritt’s designs have made their way into mainstream media, becoming a symbol of cultural pride and representation. Notably, the brand has been featured on popular television shows like The Ms. Pat Show, where the titular character is seen wearing a “SUPPORT HBCUs” hoodie. This moment of visibility is not just a win for Merritt’s brand, but for the entire HBCU community, bringing their stories and achievements to a broader audience. For Merritt, fashion is a vehicle for storytelling. Each piece in his collection is designed to spark conversations about the importance of HBCUs, their role in shaping leaders, and their contribution to the fabric of Black culture. His brand goes beyond aesthetics, serving as a rallying cry for HBCU alumni and supporters to wear their pride on their sleeves— literally. As HBCU culture continues to influence fashion, Merritt’s PROUD HBCU GRAD apparel stands out as a shining example of how style can intersect with social consciousness. His work not only honors the past but also inspires the future, encouraging the next generation to embrace their heritage and continue the legacy of excellence that HBCUs represent. With each design, Fairell Merritt is not just creating fashion; he’s crafting a movement—one that celebrates Black history, education, and pride, and one that is here to stay.
