MEDIA MANIPULATION AND BLACK MEN IN AMERICA Since the inception of America, fear mongering, selective reporting, and stereotyping have been media manipulation tactics used to influence attitudes about Black males. Media manipulation is the intentional use of media to influence public opinion, emotions, or behavior, for purposes including political gain. In 2011 The Opportunity Agenda released “Media Representations and Impact on the Lives of Black Men and Boys”. According to this literature review all forms of media offer a distorted version of Black male life, negatively affecting how Black males are perceived by themselves and others. As topics centering Black men continue to trend across platforms, remember media manipulation is real and always a factor. Consume media wisely and call out media manipulation when you observe it — Dr. Adia Winfrey

SIDNEY POITIER The Great Speeches of an Icon Who Moved Us Forward Forward by Oprah Winfrey Compiled by Joanna Poitier Edited by John Malahy

He starred in more than 40 films and was a recipient of some of the world’s most notable honors and awards. Because he had such a smooth and commanding voice, his speeches were iconic. MUST-SEE TV

This EXCLUSIVE writer’s choice edition reveals Leslie’s favorite shows on television. By design, it includes (1) another blockbuster Will Packer and Kevin Hart joint, (2) the most watched show on TV with Kevin Costner, and (3) a thrilling series from 50 Cent’s Power Universe. By Leslie E. Royal

Starz

Genre: Gangster, Crime, Drama

FIGHT NIGHT: THE MILLION DOLLAR HEIST

I’ve been a huge fan of the Power Universe franchise from day one. Of course, Power was awesome. When Power Book II: Ghost spinned off from there, I was all in. The direction it has taken is awesome and has always had me sitting on the edge of my seat. You can’t go wrong with exceptional actors like the iconic Mary J. Blige as Monet Tejada, Michael Rainey Jr. as Tariq St. Patrick, Naturi Naughton as Tasha St. Patrick, Method Man as Davis Maclean, Laurenz Tate as Councilman Tate, Woody Maclain as Cane Tejada, and Michael Ealy as Detective Carter.

Peacock

Genre: Action, Crime, Drama Stop what you’re doing and watch this extraordinary miniseries. Whether you straight up binge watch it the way I did or take your time and watch it over several days, the phenomenal ensemble cast does not disappoint. Incredible Hollywood heavyweights Samuel L. Jackson as Frank Moten, Don Cheadle as J. D. Hudson, Kevin Hart as Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams, Taraji P. Henson as Vivien Thomas, Terrence Howard as Cadillac Richie, David Banner as Missouri Slim, Sinqua Wallas as McKinley “Mac” Rogers, and Clifton Powell as “Mushmouth” are incredible in this miniseries based on some real-life drama. With the exceptional cinematography, I felt like I was taken back to 1970 when Muhammad Ali went to Georgia for his comeback fight. An afterparty filled with Black mobsters from around the country was robbed. The exciting action just took off from there in a flick series that you don’t want to miss.

I felt like I was taken back to 1970 when Muhammad Ali went to Georgia for his comeback fight. An afterparty filled with Black mobsters from around the country was robbed.

YELLOWSTONE Paramount+

Genre: Contemporary Western, Epic, Drama I must admit… I became a little intrigued when as a Kevin Costner fan, the hosts of my morning news show were talking about Yellowstone. I soon became a believer after binge watching each season for days. It has repeatedly ranked as cable television’s top show in America and with great reason. Costner, as John Dutton, endeavors to keep his ranch in his family’s hands by any unsavory means necessary. That comes with the assistance of do-whateverit-takes ranch hands like Colby Mayfield whose part is exceptionally and impressively played by Denim Richards.

ELECTION 2024 & BLACK MEDIA BY DR. ADIA WINFREY

O

ON MARCH 16, 1827, Freedom’s Journal became the first American media company by, for, and about Black people. Today, Black media is a force influencing every sector of American life, including politics. The Black Media Director for the Harris-Walz campaign, Jasmine Harris, recently sat with us to discuss her role within the campaign, and her journey to this historic position. Describe your role as Black Media Director. I am a liaison between Black Media and the campaign. We know that in our culture and communities, there are outlets that have been trusted sources throughout generations. It is my job to ensure these outlets and Black reporters have the access they need to keep Black America informed. I also make sure the candidate has cultivated relationships with these Black Media outlets and understands who the reporters are. Additionally, I make sure that Black Media can get the interviews, whether it’s with Vice-President Harris, Governor Walz, or our amazing national surrogates. My role also involves sharing information with Black Media about all these individuals have done for Black America. What was your path to this role? My undergraduate degree is in communications, and I have a master’s in political science. During my first year of grad school, I read an article about women who ran the 14

Obama White House. From this article, I learned about the Director of African American media position and knew this was the career path for me. I interned in Michigan State politics, and eventually moved to DC joining Senator Chuck Shumer’s digital team, and later transitioning to run his Black Media. When I moved to DC, Black women in the field, including Erica Loewe, supported and looked out for me. In 2024 I was hired as Black Media Director for this Presidential campaign. Describe the shift in your role when Vice President Harris became the presumptive nominee. Within hours of the announcement, Black women organized a caIl with 44,000 women that raised over $1 million, inspiring other groups to do the same. The historic nature of the Harris campaign excited people in a way we have not seen in a very long time, and I’m very thankful and proud to be part of that. Vice President Harris does a great job finding creative ways to get her message through whether it’s giving a keynote address at the national conventions of various Black Greek organizations or sitting down with podcasters. She finds creative ways to break through to make sure voters understand the stakes of this election. What message do you have for other Black women who aspire to be where you are? Trust yourself. Trust your gut. Have a plan.

BUXTON VIBES

An acoustic melody to follow: Abel Stokes, small-town vocalist, and nature lover

Courtesy of A bel Stokes

BY TASH VAN DOMIEN

A

ANY MUSIC LOVER WOULD GET LOST in the melody of Abel Stokes’ voice. Known for his soft acoustic covers of all genres, Abel Stokes is a small-town vocalist and musician with a bright future in the music industry. Though he sings everything and his love for music is easily felt by anyone who spends at least five minutes in his presence, Abel likes to cover reggae and soca music; however, his favourite genres are R&B and soul. As a child, Abel always wanted to explore music, but there were limited opportunities in the small village Guyanese village, Buxton, where he grew up. Nevertheless, with a passion for all things artistic, Abel, a self-taught guitarist, bought his first guitar at age 19. A creative at heart, Abel is also learning how to play the bass and the keyboard. He engages in what he calls ‘impromptu performances’, where he visits local establishments and performs various covers, getting the staff and the patrons involved in his love for music. While Abel still maintains his day job in graphic design, he aspires to become a music producer, “[I] love the arts, love performing… [I hope] to bring local music to international level and standards and promote the Guyanese culture”.

Abel is a true patriot and hopes to ‘push the quality and standard’ of local music that people can enjoy and appreciate. In fact, he is already well on his way to achieving this feat. Abel received national attention for his rendition of Dave Martin’s ‘Not a Blade of Grass’, which he performed at the Independence Concert in 2021 and is frequently heard when the Guyanese parliament is in session. “I am most passionate about art in general and performing”, he proudly declares when asked about his hobbies and music. But Abel has another love, everything outdoors and nature. He loves “outdoor activities, camping, hiking, and a lot of travel”. He even wrote an original track in the Rupununi region of Guyana, for the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival, a quaint display of arts, crafts, and music in the picturesque indigenous regions of Guyana. Like many young musicians, Abel also has dreams of performing for a wider audience and collaborating with his favourite artists, especially those in the Caribbean. In listing some of the places he would love to perform, he mentioned summer fest, summer jam, and rockathon. upscalemagazine.com

M. STEVEN BROMELL IS ALL ABOUT BUSINESS with a purpose. The Executive CEO and Operations Manager of Pro Cutters Lawnscapes, Inc (PCL) is a man of excellence. His full service, minority-owned, commercial landscape maintenance and right-of-way mowing company was founded in 2010. Having contracts with the Department of Transportation, county governments, commercial businesses, utility companies, and more, the award-winning company is rated one of the top 150 landscaping companies in America. Steven, a U. S. Army veteran, is a positive, generous, and encouraging person. He and his wife Shawn Bromell, president of PCL, are known for their exceptionalism, innovation, and commitment to the community. For this Men’s Issue, Upscale reached out to Steven for advice on successfully operating a business while reinvesting in the community in which he serves. What does success mean to you? Demonstrating the company’s role as an economic engine within its community—driving job creation, supporting local businesses, and fostering an environment where economic opportunities can thrive. How were you able to build such a successful business? Standing strong in our faith and operating with core values has allowed us to build a successful company. We were willing to make some tough decisions and learn from our mistakes which I believe are cornerstones of success. Also, we dreamed big and refused to let obstacles or setbacks along the way derail our vision for the company. 22

What advice would you give to individuals facing adversity in their lives? If you are facing adversity in your business, take a moment and smile. You may ask why smile; well, it is a clear indication that you are on the right track. In business, adversity builds character and character builds trust. Trust is necessary to build a sustainable customer base that will believe not only in your products or service but with you as the leader. Can you share the name of your new book and tell us a little about it? Blood, Sweat, and Grass: Never Quit on Your Dreams. The book invites readers on an extraordinary journey of M. Steven Bromell from humble beginnings to entrepreneurial triumph. It delves into how I took a $200 charge card from Target along with 3 other partners, purchased a lawn mower, push broom, shovel and hand shears, eventually struck out alone and turned it into a very successful business along with my faithful and trusted business partner and wife. What advice would you give to individuals desiring to start their own businesses? The simple answer would be to just start. Of course, you need to do some research on the market, the type of business you will start, cost of entry, what are you willing to sacrifice in terms of time and sweat equity and have some very clear goals. It is also a great idea to find a mentor. For more information about PCL, visit www.procutterslawnscapes. com. You can order Steven’s book at www.BloodSweatAndGrass.com.

FALLING INTO FITNESS C our tesy of Mi chel le D eShi elds

Ten Tips

to Stay Active This Season

GUT TER CREDIT S

By Michelle DeShields

A

AS THE COOL WIND AND VIBRANT COLORS of fall take over, it's the perfect time to refresh your fitness routine. Whether you’re getting back into exercise or maintaining your momentum, these tips will help you mentally and physically stay active and energized during the fall season. 1. EMBRACE THE OUTDOORS Take advantage of the cooler temperatures and beautiful fall scenery. Go for walks, hikes, or runs in parks, nature trails, or around your neighborhood. The fresh air will boost your mood and make exercise more enjoyable. 2. SET SEASONAL FITNESS GOALS Establish new goals for the fall, such as running a certain distance, joining a local fitness challenge, or committing to strength training a few times a week. Short-term goals will help keep you motivated as the days get shorter. 3. TRY NEW FALL SPORTS Get involved in autumn sports like flag football, soccer, or even a local softball league. Many recreational leagues start in the fall, giving you a great opportunity to meet new people while staying active. 4. LAYER UP FOR OUTDOOR WORKOUTS Invest in moisture-wicking layers that keep you warm without overheating. Lightweight jackets, leggings, and gloves will ensure you're comfortable as temperatures drop, making outdoor workouts easier to stick with.

5. INCORPORATE STRENGTH TRAINING As fall settles in, it's a great time to add or maintain strength training in your routine. Incorporating bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks will help build muscle and keep your metabolism revved up. 6. I love pole dancing because it is a challenging and rewarding activity that allows me to get my exercise and fitness training on. It not only builds strength and flexibility, but it also allows me to express myself creatively. “I love pole dancing because it is a challenging and rewarding activity that allows me to get my exercise and fitness training on. It not only builds strength and flexibility, but it also allows me to express myself creatively” explains Kristina. “I can also incorporate other styles of dance or come up with unique movements, so it really feels limitless.” Although she was flexible growing up and dabbled in tumbling and jazz dancing as a youth, she didn’t always know that she wanted a career related to fitness and movement. After college, Kristina got started as a Pilates and yoga instructor before discovering aerial dance in her early 20s and finally settled on pole fitness as her first love in the mind-body fitness arena. “I think it’s important for women to know that dance and movement don’t have an age limit. I was 29 when I went to my first pole dance class. And I’ve had clients and met instructors in their 40s or 50s. There are also a few pole artists in their 70s!” Kristina believes that anyone can do pole, no matter what size or age. “Not all of the movements are hard, so it’s more accessible than you might think, when you train according to your skill level, but you have to have the desire and determination.” A choreographer, aerialist, stunt double and acrobat, who also dances Brazilian Samba and Flamenco as part of her dance repertoire, she loves being a part of the local and international pole and performing arts communities, declaring that it gives her a sense of connectedness to art and other artists. “There are pole dance studios, competitions, shows, and workshops all over the world. And the pole community is really special. From student showcases at local studios, to important

international competitions, one thing you will hear in the audience at a pole show are people cheering. We are a VERY supportive community. Whether someone is a beginner or a pro, they can go on stage confidently knowing the audience is going to cheer them on. We are kinda loud,’ laughs Kristina who believes that support is a very important aspect of the pole sport community. “We are truly women supporting women.” The owner/operator of two pole and aerial dance studios, Studio Kuku and Velvet Studio in Atlanta, she brings fun, entertaining simple step-by-step technique-based pole and hoop training and workshops to the surrounding Atlanta metrocommunities and beyond. Krisina also puts some of her pole arts skills to use as a professional artist performing at premiere events and cultural shows where her specialty is Lollipop and Lyra. Both practices are trademark performance acts using a circular hoop where she entertains with breathtaking stunts, bold movements and creative artistic techniques. Checklist for pole as a fitness routine: 1) F ind an experienced and reputable trainer with a pole instructor certificate. 2) Take at least 3 classes. It takes some getting used to the feel of the pole! 3) Be consistent, but don’t rush your progress! It’s a journey. 4) S tay motivated! Set goals and seek out other pole artists on social media for inspiration! 5) F ind community. One of the best aspects is the people you meet along the way, or what we call ‘pole sisters.’ For more information or to book a pole dance class in Atlanta, visit StudioKuku.com. “This election is bigger than the two names at the top of the ballot — it’s consequential because voters will be the ultimate decision makers on the people and issues shaping our daily lives. When we’re registered and ready to vote, our vote is our voice, and our future is up to us,” says Beth Lynk, Executive Director of When We All Vote. By the numbers, 34 million Black Americans are eligible to vote in 2024. Americans will head out to the polls to elect or re-elect 34 members of the senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Moreover 11 governor seats are open and as are 85 of the country’s legislative chambers as well as local and special elections. “Democracy starts with us – that’s why When We All Vote is proud to partner with artists, athletes, academics, grassroots organizers, business leaders, and our amazing volunteers. EBONY MCMORRIS:

The Powerhouse Voice Covering Washington D.C.

By Dr. Thelá Thatch

EBONY MCMORRIS’S JOURNALISM career spans nearly two decades, during which she has established herself as a dynamic voice for marginalized communities. As the White House Correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN), McMorris reports from the epicenter of U.S. politics—covering critical issues from the Brady Press Room to Capitol Hill. Her work reflects a deep commitment to equity, truth, and social justice.

systemic biases that dominate mainstream narratives.

McMorris’s career began at NBC News in 2001, where she rose from Network News Assistant to producer. She later worked at NBC-4 in Washington, D.C., and contributed to News One Now with Roland Martin, focusing on stories that elevate Black voices. At Radio One D.C., she served as Community Affairs Director, creating initiatives like Feed Our Community and Service Saturdays, which provided essential resources to underserved communities.

McMorris also sheds light on the loss of Black-owned land: “In 1920, Black families owned 16 million acres, but by 2017, that number dropped to 2.9 million due to gentrification, predatory practices, and discriminatory policies. We need to cover not just the losses but the heroes building healthy communities from the ground up.”

Today, McMorris uses her platform at AURN to cover pivotal moments in American politics. She reports on everything from voting rights to the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. McMorris describes the nomination as life-changing: “Her words, ‘We’ve come this far by faith,’ hit me deeply. It was more than historic—it was a triumph for Black women everywhere.” Centering the Stories That Matter McMorris highlights mainstream media’s failure to capture the full breadth of Black life, often focusing on stereotypes rather than resilience and success. “A Pew Research study shows 63% of Black adults believe news coverage of Black people is more negative than for any other group,” she explains, pointing to the 28

One of McMorris’s key concerns is Black maternal health. “Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women,” she notes. “One in five Black women experiences unfair treatment by healthcare providers. This issue deserves attention beyond election cycles—we need action.”

Advice for Aspiring Journalists When asked how young journalists can make an impact, McMorris turns to James Baldwin: “You have to go the way your blood beats. Pursue truth relentlessly and never forget the people you serve.” She urges reporters to “master storytelling” by exploring history, listening deeply, and asking hard questions. McMorris also invokes Alice Allison Dunnigan, the first Black woman with White House press credentials: “Without Black reporters constantly documenting civil rights efforts, our struggles would be lost to history.” Unapologetically centering Black voices, McMorris challenges both mainstream media and future journalists to report stories that matter. “The law can either liberate or oppress,” she says. “We are at a crossroads—and telling the right stories makes all the difference.”

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES

Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By Cookbook with delectable dishes, cherished family photos, and witty banter is just what the home chefs should order this holiday season.

T

THE GREAT, LEGENDARY ICON AL ROKER is at it again. America’s favorite meteorologist or “weatherman” published a new cookbook after 25 years. This time, he has a remarkable partner and co-author. Just in time for the holidays, he and his daughter Courtney Roker Laga introduce Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By: Easy, Memory-Making Family Dishes for Every Occasion. upscale interviewed the duo and asked what made him decide to publish a new cookbook. “To be honest, I didn’t decide it. It was really Courtney’s idea. During the pandemic, my son Nick and I were doing what we called “What We’re Cooking” and people seemed to like it. Courtney kind of noticed that,” says Roker. “She said we should do a cookbook. It had been 25 years I think since I did my last one. I said we can do it, but you are going to have to do most of the work.” That she did. She began working on a concept of recipes from their family, friends, and chef associates. She had a great experience as she went about being a recipe detective or sleuth, hunting down recipes including those of her grandmother that were not previously written down. “Oh yeah. I had to bug everybody,” recalled Courtney who spoke with her Dad about his mother’s dishes. “It was going off what he was telling me or what I remembered eating. I talked to friends of the family and like he said, talked to chef friends.” Courtney did an exceptional job of compiling and developing more than 100 tasty recipes for the book while being seven or 30

eight months pregnant. The cookbook is remarkably written with stunning images of the dishes as well as warm family stories woven throughout. “We talked back and forth for about a week and thought about who in the chef world we would approach and what recipes I really liked, says Roker. “Not only did Courtney write the recipes and tested the recipes, but also found the photographer and she styled every dish for the pictures. She did the yeoman’s share of the work.” They’ve included dished for just about every occasion. For Family Night, Courtney suggests Chicken Chimichangas while her dad recommends Roast Chicken. Around the holidays, great dishes and libations can include Baked Mac & Cheese, Lela’s Sangria, Mojitos, and the McRoker Breakfast Sandwich. “One of our most venerable family recipes from my mother was what we called Sweet Potato Poon. It was like a crustless sweet potato pie. It’s not the holidays unless we have that,” reminisces Roker fondly. Life is busy for this dynamic father-daughter duo. In addition to the Today Show, Roker is working on a PBS series for kids called The Weather Hunters that will launch in July 2025. As for Courtney, this incredible professional chef continues raising her beautiful daughter while being on a book tour with her dad who is most proud of her. “Last year she birthed a baby and a cookbook. It’s a wonderful thing as a parent when you realize your kid is really good at what they do,” says Roker.

SWEET POTATO POON 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into cubes 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar ¾ cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 1½ teaspoons kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground allspice ¾ cups canned crushed pineapple, drained 1 (12-ounce) bag large marshmallows

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Add the sweet potatoes and cook until tender, about 12 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl. Add the butter and use a potato masher to mash the butter into the sweet potatoes. Stir in the brown sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice until well combined. Fold in the crushed pineapple and transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Bake until the sweet potatoes are lightly browned on top, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and preheat the broiler. Place the marshmallows in a single layer on top of the sweet potatoes. Broil for a minute or two to toast the top of the marshmallows—they brown fast, so don’t walk away! Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

THE DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE’S MILTON AND HELENE

After a significant number of lives lost, homes destroyed, and economies impacted, the effects of climate change has become more than mere debate, but an evergrowing harsh reality.

A

AN ABOVE NORMAL FORECAST FROM the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provided stark indication that hurricane season could quite possibly be a powerful one. Surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean were substantially warmer than usual. The cause? Human-caused climate change. On October 7th, in over just 20 hours, Hurricane Milton terrifyingly intensified from a Category 1 to a devastating Category 5 storm, with sustained winds of 180 miles per hour. Making landfall on Florida’s west coast on October

9th as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane, the monster of a storm brought with it deadly storm surge and hurricane-force winds. Just two weeks prior, Hurricane Helene made landfall as a colossal Category 4 hurricane in the Big Bend area of Florida on September 26th, causing deadly flooding throughout Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Kentucky. On October 7th, CNN reported that the death toll had risen to at least 232 people across six states, making it the second-deadliest hurricane to strike the United States mainland in the past 50 years, following Hurricane Katrina, which killed at least 1,833 people in 2005. The same report

painted a heartbreaking picture of the vast devastation left by the storm in the Appalachia region of North Carolina, highlighting the impact to the Black Mountain community with some losing entire families, including children, parents, and other loved ones. The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly more undeniable to detractors as researchers provide more and more proof of its influence. According to NBC News, a new report from the World Weather Attribution group, a consortium of scientists that analyzes extreme weather and considered to be a foremost authority in determining how climate change has influenced a particular event, found that Helene’s wind speeds were 11% more intense and its rainfall totals were approximately 10% higher because of climate change. Both Hurricanes Helene and Milton traveled over a record-high, hot ocean—leading to a storm that intensified more quickly as warm water acts as fuel for storms. Trends in rapid intensification, a process in which a hurricane’s sustained wind speeds increase by at least 35 mph over 24 hours, has become more common because of climate change. Even more concerning are the findings that the sea surface temperatures that drove the storms were 200 to 500 times more likely because of climate change according to the report.

Helene flooded the southern Appalachia region with more than 2 feet of rain—resulting in floodwaters that carried away houses, washed out highways, and took lives. NBC News highlights the report’s findings that coastal and inland rainfall totals that led to the catastrophic flooding, were 40% and 70% more likely to have been caused by climate change, respectively. As scientists continue to encourage the world to heed the warning that the continued burning of fossil fuels will lead to more storms like Milton and Helene, there remains a real and permeable threat that worser conditions and more painful statistics from major weather events are on the horizon if changes are not soon made to slow the progression of climate change and its impacts to the environment and weather systems. In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that climate change presents a fundamental threat to human health, affecting the physical environment as well as all aspects of both natural and human systems—including social and economic conditions and the functioning of health systems—making it a threat multiplier, and one that affects low-income countries and small island developing states with the harshest health impacts and death rates in vulnerable regions.

The Doctor is… BACK IN THE GAME Actor Jason George On His Grey’s Anatomy Homecoming

F

or actor Jason George, stepping back onto the set of Grey’s Anatomy and putting on the scrubs of fan favorite “Dr. Ben Warren” felt like coming home. “Grey’s Anatomy is the ‘house’ I grew up in,” he says about the role he left seven years ago on the ABC-TV show currently in its 21st season. Here, the star lets us in on what to expect from this full-circle moment and why starting over is all a part of the game.

“Look, acting is nothing but starting over,” says Jason George pragmatically. “Every time you start a show, the one guaranteed thing is that someday it will get cancelled.” So when the popular actor, and his Grey’s Anatomy alter ego “Dr. Ben Warren,” saw the end of his TV drama Station 19 after seven seasons, Jason took it all in stride. “I think there’s a lot of stories still to tell there. And I love that cast and crew,” he reminisces about the Grey’s Anatomy first responder spin-off. But returning to the familiar surrounding of the award-winning medical series has all the feels of a family reunion says the father of three. “I’m very excited to be back. For the most part, it’s just like going home, except there’s some new faces,” observes Jason about the role he’s played, on and off, for almost 15 years. He explains his return to the longrunning medical drama’s set this way, “Grey’s Anatomy is the ‘house” I grew up in. And if you take that analogy all the way, this is like coming back to live with your parents when you’re a grown up. It feels incredibly comfortable because this is home…Imagine coming home but your parents treat you like an adult and you’re still basically doing your thing. That’s kind of what it’s been like for me, I came home.” As for the plot line he’s looking forward to exploring on the show, the leading man homes in on “Benley”—the name fans have given the show’s relationship between “Dr. Ben Warren” 36 UPSCALEMAGAZINE / u p s c a l e m a g a z i n e . c o m

and wife “Dr. Miranda Bailey” (played by Chandra Wilson). “For me, keeping the ‘Ben and Bailey’ storyline going is very important. I love that they are this powerful couple. Both are top in their fields but nobody is going anywhere. When they get into an argument…they know they’re going to work it out even though they will go hard for whatever it is they believe in—even if it’s at each other—which is hilarious,” he shares. “And it’s so relatable to me, considering I just celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary. Putting that [relationship] in television, for me, is really important, it’s something I’m very proud of.”

acting was not completely impulsive and without thought behind it.” It’s a philosophy that’s working out quite well for Jason—and “Dr. Ben Warren”— especially when it comes to starting over. “You’ve got to get above the ‘chessboard,’ you’ve got to figure out a strategy even for something as crazy as becoming an actor.” It’s a prescription for success that won’t let you down.

So, will fans see a difference in “Dr. Ben Warren” when he returns to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after his firefighter role on Station 19? “‘Ben’ is an adrenaline junkie and was, and has always been, a man of action. That’s not changed,” assures Jason. “He’s matured. There’s more thinking of the consequences, thinking of the bigger picture now than back in the day. ‘Ben’ has grown,” reveals the actor. “What I admire about ‘Ben’ is in real life, people start over again several times during the course of life. I’ll write you a recommendation and we’ll get you into the best law school possible. You come back and clerk for me, and you’re a made man in the state of Virginia and your entire career is laid out for you.’ I went to college, took an acting class and the whole thing went sideways,” he laughs. “[The judge] never stopped being my friend,” relates the star. “But I think he recognized that the decision to pursue

The Okavango Delta has been described as a sea of land, a land of water with channels of lagoons and narrow reed-lined paths, creating a bewildering network of interconnecting water highways. Local residents travel the vast pathways daily using a Mokoro, a wooden canoe built from carvedout trees. (However, today, conservation efforts require Mokoros to be built with fiberglass.) Both men and women navigate the shallow waterway by standing in the stern and pushing their flatbottom boat with a long wooden pole. The Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site and sanctuary to some of the world’s most endangered animals and birds. Hippos poke their heads above water to catch an inquisitive glance at the Polers; the name was given to those using mokoros and poles to navigate the paths. As you glide through the water, past waterlilies, large elephant herds graze along the shoreline, and cranes, egrets, and eagles fly, scouting for food nearby. Exodus Adventures, an experienced tour company, will plan overnight camping in the Delta at one of several campsites. This will give you a unique experience of safely camping in the wild with tents, campfires, and a local crew who will make it comfortable, exciting, and extraordinary. During the day, experienced wildlife guides take you on walking safaris to see zebras, giraffes, elephants, and other wildlife that calls this area home. Botswana’s Chobe National Park is best known for its massive population of elephants and buffalos. According to Exodus Adventures, “There are an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 elephants in the park, upscalemagazine.com

which is undoubtedly the best place to see them in the world. The park is also home to wild dogs, lions, leopards, and other wildlife.” An early morning safari before the mid-day heat allows up to three hours of winding through the park, spotting the animals as the sunrises and their day comes alive. There are boat tours that sail around the Chobe River, where you can spot hippos, crocodiles, and shore birds. You may also be lucky and spot a herd of elephants playing in the water. The next stop is Zimbabwe’s Matobo National Park, also known as Matopos National Park, where you’ll find spectacular views of natural beauty stretching miles and miles. The area is filled with spectacular giant granite boulders called Kopjes that appear stacked on top of each other. Along the road, you’ll pass women cutting and collecting long spears of

grass to sell. For wildlife, the park is one of the best places to see black and white rhinos, the elusive leopards, and a third of all eagle species. Here, you’ll also stroll among the rock paintings of the San people who once lived there. Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management states, “The paintings date back at least 13,000 years. The paintings illustrate evolving artistic styles, socioreligious beliefs, and rich cultural traditions that have disappeared. These hills were once populated by the indigenous San people, who have left their mark with rock paintings depicting giraffes, elands, and kudu. It was also the colonialist Cecil Rhodes’ favorite place and where he asked to be buried.” A trip to Zimbabwe is only complete with a visit to Victoria Falls. Measuring 5,580ft wide and 330ft high, the Zambezi River flows between Zimbabwe and Namibia, creating Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world. From season to season, the water levels change; anytime you’re there, you will feel the spray rising into the sky, softly touching your face, coating your hair, and giving you the complete sense of experiencing the falls. Exodus Travel states, “The falls have been given a local name Mosi o Tunya, the Smoke that Thunders.”

The falls can be seen by hiking the designated paths, taking a flight over them, or for the brave crossing into neighboring Zambia for a view while swimming in Devils Pool. Botswana and Zimbabwe offer a memorable way to have a fabulous safari on Africa’s wild side.

TIPS FOR PLANNING A SAFARI: Visa A visa is required to enter Zimbabwe and can be purchased on arrival Safe and security Botswana and Zimbabwe are considered two of Africa’s safest and most stable countries. MUSIC

BEAUTIFUL MUSIQ

Courtesy of Ta-Nehisi Coates

BY LEKEISHA EDWARDS

AS HE PREPARES FOR AN UPCOMING performance in Lusaka, Zambia—located in the beautiful continent of Africa—Philly born singer, songwriter and producer, Taalib Johnson aka Musiq Soulchild, is humbled by the love he continues to receive from fans and the community. In September, he earned an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education degree from Harvest Christian University. “I dropped out of school to pursue music,” he says, “I’ve had my own insecurities as it relates to my journey in education, so it means so much to come full circle and be awarded an honorary doctorate based on my experience and skills in music. It’s a recognition I will be forever grateful for.” And one the artist has more than earned. Classics like “Just Friends (Sunny),” “Halfcrazy,” and the quintessential love song, “Love,” are just a few of his hits that led to 2 platinum albums, 2 gold albums, and a plethora of awards and nominations—including 9 Grammy nominations. With a diverse musical background, his catalog does, however, prove he cannot be categorized as just an R&B artist. “Though neo-soul and R&B is what many are familiar with when it comes to my music,” he says, “I enjoy and experiment with all styles of music and have incorporated forms of hip hop, rock and roll, jazz, and gospel in releases.” In 2013 he teamed up with artist, Syleena Johnson, to create a reggae album titled 9ine, featuring eclectic rhythms and soul-stirring vocals that were not a “venturing off,” but rather another musical space the artist knows well. His most recent album release, Victims & Villains, created in collaboration with rapper and producer, Hit-Boy, interprets modern relationships had with one another and oneself. “I always admired Hit-Boy and felt that the work he did with artists like Nas, was genius,” he says, “When the opportunity to work with him presented itself, I was all in.” The essence of Musiq that keeps him and the music he creates in the conversation of artists to add to specially curated playlists, is the therapy, the healing, the encouragement, or guidance the melodies and lyrics of his creations provide. “I have been told by so many over the years that my songs have helped them in their lives and I am so grateful that I could have that kind of impact.” He goes on to discuss the power of music and its efforts in portraying life. “There are real people going through real things in real time. Though it’s nice to have something to dance and vibe to, the songs for those moments are still necessary and essential.” As he sets his sight on the release of new music, and an upcoming tour with Eric Benet and Joe in 2025, his initiative to bring music back to schools is one that he is working hard on. “Music vastly enhances a school’s curriculum,” he says, “Having creative outlets for students through the arts is important and we have to facilitate constructive as opposed to destructive outlets for them. There is no greater joy than seeing that lightbulb go off in a young person’s life when they discover something they love, and their sense of pride and selfesteem has been fueled. Music did that for me, and it can do it for someone else.”

NARRATIVES AND MYTHMAKING IN THE STORIES WE TELL BY LEKEISHA EDWARDS

BOOKS AFTER NEARLY A DECADE SINCE the release of his last work of nonfiction, Between the World and Me, a daring exploration of America’s racial history and its influence on the nation’s current racial crisis, Ta-Nehisi Coates returns with The Message, a powerful framework of three intertwining essays revolving around three resonant sites of conflict to explore how the stories that are told—and the ones that are not—shape the realities of all. Through journeys to Senegal, South Carolina, and Palestine—places that per the publisher’s announcement, “have been profoundly shaped and riveted by contested accounts of meaning and reality,” Coates takes a deep dive into the power and impact of writing, storytelling, reporting, and holds “insightful dives into literature and history,” to clarify what is real beneath layers of “propaganda, wishful thinking, and enforced silence,” that misleads a people with sometimes “catastrophic consequences.” The New York Times bestselling author’s reflections on his first trip to Africa, visiting Dakar, Senegal—his journey to Columbia, South Carolina, and his examination on his own book’s banning and the larger issue of the nation’s reckoning with history’s ghastly truths—and his travel to Palestine, where he witnesses with overwhelming clarity the damage and tragedy that belies those that are misled by nationalist narratives when faced with the reality of what life truly is like there on the ground, all make this a read influential in liberating oneself from destructive myths that shape our world and embracing even the most incomprehensible truths.

100SUITS

2024

FOUNDER, KEVIN LIVINGSTON ON THE “SUIT” THAT CHANGES LIVES AND THE SUPPORT OF COLIN KAEPERNICK BY LEKEISHA EDWARDS

WITH AN INITIAL DESIRE AND goal to change the lives of just one hundred men belonging to gangs in Jamaica Queens, New York, 100Suits founder, Kevin Livingston, never imagined his efforts would culminate into a highly influential nonprofit that would not only address the critical needs for business attire among New York City’s underserved communicates— but would ultimately grow to include workforce development programming, youth mentoring, and programs that support the unique needs of seniors in the area. “A gentleman incarcerated at Rikers Island recently wrote me a letter, thanking us for providing him a suit to wear before his meeting with the commissioner of the prison,” says Livingston, “A suit represented positive change for him, and it’s moments like this that I am reminded of the difference we are making and how far we have come.” Founded in 2011, Livingston was able to expand the reach of the organization through the support of colleagues and community partners. As a former bank employee, he recalls asking the bank’s manager if he could place a donation box in the bank’s lobby to collect suits, “One box, turned into two, then three, and so forth. From there, I believed in my vision and the mission of breaking down systemic barriers and helping to build the confidence, outlook, and outcomes of people in our community.” His former bank manager, Martin Marcelle—that gave him the “yes” needed to place the donation boxes in the lobby, believed in his vision as well—ultimately becoming the organization’s program manager and Livingston’s close friend. “Martin has since passed away, but I am so blessed to have had his support. Together, with the help of others on the team, we went from holding pop-ups to give out suits, information, training, and mentoring, to gaining the support of larger organizations and celebrities.” Former NFL Player and cherished philanthropist, Colin 60

Kaepernick, has been a long-time supporter of the organization from his first visit outside of a New York City parole office, donating two large boxes of his custom-made suits in 2017, to now. “Colin learned about our organization through his wife, Nessa,” Livingston says, “They both believed in the mission of supporting men released from incarceration and empowering our communities. We have been friends ever since and he is always there to help.” From appearances on shows by Stephen A. Smith and Steve Harvey—to support from legendary actor, Steve Martin, Livingston hopes to expand the organization to more states soon with greater focus on mental health. “We really want to have more mental health support for men specifically,” he shares, “Men need someone to talk to as well, and we want them to feel supported and heard, no matter their mental health struggles.” The organization currently has staff inside of Rikers Island, providing clinical services and suits to incarcerated individuals. A boutique will also be opening soon inside the correctional facility to offer suiting to those taking part in interviews or representing themselves in court. They also serve approximately 800 seniors annually in the community, recently holding a “senior prom” crowning a 93-year-old senior king and a 103 -year-old senior queen. “We held the event in a beautiful banquet hall with nice food and music,” Livingston says, “The seniors had a wonderful time.” From the start of a suit that changed lives—lifting the esteem and self-perception of the wearer, to all of the positive impact 100Suits has achieved today, Livingston is most humbled by the moments he hears from those their efforts have reached. “What moves the needle most for me is when I receive a letter, or I’m told that we have helped someone. It makes us want to do even more each day to show the community we hear them, and we love them.”

LEBRON JAMES A ROLE MODEL ON AND OFF THE COURT BY DR. THELÁ THATCH

LEBRON JAMES IS CELEBRATED WORLDWIDE as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but his true legacy extends far beyond the game. While championships, record-breaking stats, and endorsement deals highlight his talent and business acumen, it’s the impact he makes off the court that defines him as a role model. James’s philanthropic journey began in 2004 when he established the LeBron James Family Foundation, which is focused on supporting children and single-parent families. His foundation has launched programs to reduce high school dropout rates and promote education as a life-changing opportunity. In 2018, James made headlines by partnering with the Akron Public Schools system to open the I PROMISE School —a groundbreaking institution designed to help at-risk students and provide support for their families, reflecting his unwavering commitment to education and community uplift. 64

Beyond philanthropy, James’s activism speaks volumes about his character. He consistently uses his platform to raise awareness about social injustice. After the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, James led public protests, and in 2014, he wore an “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirt to honor Eric Garner, killed by police. His social media presence amplifies critical issues, offering a voice to the voiceless. When a cable news host once suggested that he “shut up and dribble,” James responded with grace and defiance: “I [speak out] because I’m passionate about it... and I know this is bigger than me.” His words capture the essence of his role as a leader—one who refuses to be silenced by criticism or confined by stereotypes. LeBron James exemplifies the power of using fame for good. Whether on the court or in the community, he is a role model who inspires others to take action, speak up, and leave a lasting impact.
