PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Joshua Dwain @joshua_dwain

For this issue, upscale Publisher Bernard Bronner chats with actor, author, and former NFL athlete Devale Ellis, who is an inspiration when it comes to men’s fitness, Black love and parenthood. In this light, Bernard asks Devale to share relationship and fitness advice, as well as plans he has for any upcoming movie roles. pg 30

BB: How do you stay fit and in shape? Devale: I work out every single day. I move for 20 minutes everyday. I must do some type of movement for 20 minutes. It can be an upward move on the treadmill, sprinting , jumprope, or riding the bike. I also stretch for 20 minutes, I do some sort of weight movement. I break up my weightroom days into fully functional days.

Bernard Bronner Publisher

Ceobernardbronner Bernardbronner Bernardbronner

BB: What relationship advice would you give to couples today? Devale: You have to be able to communicate. But when people ask me I say “All the answers for your relationship are within your relationship.” The biggest thing I do tell them is to ask their spouse. Ask them what they need and require. There really is no secret sauce. BB: What’s next in terms of any upcoming movie roles? Devale: This year I get the chance to be a lead in a Netflix Original film called “Meet Me Next Christmas,” opposite Christina Milian. You will also get a chance to see me in a more dramatic role as a recurring character in season 2 of the Courtney B. Vance led crime drama “61st Street,” now on the CW.

BLACK AND BLUE In the sometimes murky waters of American justice, celebrity Black men caught on the wrong side of the law is a troubling tradition. From O.J. Simpson and Michael Vick to Bill Cosby and Jonathan Majors, there is no shortage of high-profile Black men who have tangled with our justice system and lost. With the recent allegations, and subsequent lawsuits and raids, on Sean “Diddy” Combs, there is another one the list. The trauma of these situations is devastating. The reality is that the tarnish on our community — either from not protecting our most vulnerable, nurturing and protecting predators, or by not holding a higher standard and demanding better from our legacy builders — is a bruise, not easily healed. —— E. The Multifaceted Monyetta Shaw-Carter Makes Time for her Furry Friends BY MICHELLE DESHIELDS

WHILE JUGGLING A NUMBER of roles can be daunting—The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, entrepreneur, author, and loving wife and mother—Monyetta seamlessly incorporates the care and companionship of her two cherished pets: Remington, affectionately known as “Remy,” and Anubis, the newest addition to their furry family, into her family’s routine. However, when travel for work or vacations call, her village is always right on time. Whether it’s her children, husband, a neighbor or a close friend, her furry friends are never left without care and companionship. Spending quality time with Remy and Anubis is a non-negotiable in their household. Daily walks foster the bond with their pets and also contributes to their physical fitness. Anubis, a Cane Corso, acts as the guard dog but remains a playful pup at heart, enjoying cuddle time by the pool or exploring the yard with the family. AS THE WORLD WARMS AND THE CLIMATE changes, many call for a transition to clean energy sources, an end to the use of fossil fuels, and responsible exploration in more liberal settings. Some might think the era of successful careers in the oil and gas industry is slowly shrinking. This is not the case for Anthony Jackson, who spent 17 years working for ExxonMobil, both at its headquarters in Houston, Texas, and across field offices in Nigeria, Qatar, South Korea, Malaysia, Russia, and now Guyana. Jackson attributes his success to curiosity, hard work and flexibility. “A philosophy of yes, trying new things unless you are sure it’s a bad move for you”, he advised. “In general, what I always think is important for a new career is to be curious, to work hard and to say yes to opportunities as they come by”. According to Jackson, people tend to hold out for ‘better’ opportunities, but in his experience, there is often more you don’t know than you actually know, so his advice to young professionals is to grab good opportunities as they come. In fact, that is how Jackson’s career accelerated in the oil and gas giant. He had spent only six months on the job in Houston when his principals asked if he would move to Nigeria, and one yes led to an impressive career 16 years later. On specific advice for those who want to join the industry, understanding the importance of safety is his first point. Having a strong technical knowledge in one or more areas and having a theoretical base to complement on-the-job practice, is his second. Having recently rotated out of a position as an incountry project manager at ExxonMobil-Guyana into his 16

current role as an asset manager for the Yellowtail project, an initiative amounting to over USD$10 billion in investment by multinational partners, Jackson is also cognizant of trends in the industry. He speaks with excitement about visible changes in the industry from his induction to present. His company and its management committee, led by the CEO, champion low-carbon solutions as part of their brand. “It is amazing to see how much the industry has changed in the time I have been [a part] of it because when I started, it was oil and gas 100%”, he explained. However, now the company is exploring opportunities to offer cleaner energy solutions and ‘decarbonise inherently carbonintensive parts of the industry’. Operating in a changing industry, Jackson frequently has to make decisions that balance innovation with risk management. As the Yellowtail project he manages is the fourth such project in Guyana, he explained that the company is building on lessons learned and best practices both internally within the company and externally in the wider industry. What he describes as ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’, as the team strives to integrate these best practices into the facility as it develops, balancing the need for improvement, the rate of technological advancement, and the difficulty of making amendments as the project is implemented. While Jackson’s successful career path is one to emulate, he describes his family life as his greatest success. He considers himself a simple family man who could not have achieved what he has without the support of his wife, three kids, and his playful yet affectionate dog.

C our te s y of D amon Johns on

upscale caught up with restaurateur and chef Damon Johnson, owner and operator of Fin & Feathers and Doe Nation Hospitality & Restaurant Development. By Jonell Whitt

How long have you been in the hospitality and restaurant business? I have been in the hospitality business for 10 years. I have been a restaurant owner for the past 4 years. I’ve been cooking since I was a young man. I was born into a family of entrepreneurs so becoming my own boss was inevitable. It seems like you must have a special type of endurance to survive being in the restaurant for long periods of time. What is your secret? I absolutely love to see people enjoying their food, having a good time inside the restaurant, and just making the experience a whole vibe. Being a part of a great atmosphere sparks my energy levels. Great food, environment and music is my type of comfort zone. What are the main components a chef needs in terms of support from his kitchen team? A chef needs a team of people to make things flow properly for him. He needs a line cook, expo, sous chef, kitchen manager, food runner, host, and a dishwasher. What determines if a chef is going to have an amazing night? If the expediter is flowing smoothly (meaning) when the food goes up it’s very crucial to get those meals out to the tables in a timely fashion. If you don’t, that’s how you get bad reviews, complaints, requests for meal comps, and chaos because this all leads to an unorganized kitchen. Nothing will go right if the kitchen isn’t organized.

Building the menu requires what type of elements? Well, you really must determine your audience, like what type of customers you will be attracting by the type of food you are serving. You must make sure, for example, if you are purchasing chicken you need to have several menu items that you can cook with chicken. The owner of the establishment typically will collaborate with the chef to build the menu. Budget will play a huge role in what you will be purchasing and selling and the ROI on everything is very important. Name one of the biggest mistakes you have seen new restaurant owners make. No. 1 is not hiring a professional restaurant consultant. No. 2, not educating yourself on the business. The first few years of owning a restaurant you should be your own general manager because it’s crucial to understand all day-to-day operations of running an entire establishment and coordinating that with supervising your staff and the bar. There are a lot of moving components, and you need to understand what makes each part run effectively. How does an owner determine if he is hiring the best restaurant consultant? Well, he needs to find out if that person has ever actually owned a restaurant. If he’s owned more than one and if he doesn’t own one anymore than why? If the person’s restaurant is still in business, I would look up the reviews. I would also investigate if his restaurants were generating any money. The answers to these questions would help you determine if you should be asking for their assistance.

Lexi Allen talks Cosmetic Line and joining the cast of BET’s “Churchy” BY UTAMU BELLE

STELLAR GOSPEL MUSIC AWARD-NOMINATED artist Lexi Allen is making boss moves, with the launch of her own cosmetic line, G.E.A.T Cosmetics and joining the powerful cast of BET’s new television series, “Churchy.” Known for seamlessly merging sultry Saturday night vibes with that of sanctified Sunday mornings, Lexi is also a television host, internet sensation, fashion model, and entrepreneur.

GUTTER CREDITS

Her passion for makeup and being an ambassador for several makeup brands has led her to launch G.E.A.T (Greater Eye Am Temple) Cosmetics.

accessible. To achieve this, I developed easy-to-follow charts to accompany our eyeshadow palettes, guiding customers through the process…G.E.A.T Cosmetics represents my journey of turning makeup into a ministry, a testament to the blend of beauty, culture, and laughter that drives my mission.” The products are vegan, non-toxic and paraben free, and include lipstick, lip gloss, eye shadow palettes, mascara, concealer, foundation, bronzers, and more. In February, Lexi joined BET’s, “Churchy,” as “Mother Jean.”

“I founded G.E.A.T Cosmetics out of a deep-seated love for makeup and a desire to address a significant shortfall in the beauty industry. Having spent countless dollars on luxury brands that consistently failed to cater to the nuanced needs of black and brown skin tones, I was motivated to create a solution. My vision was to launch a brand that not only celebrated the beauty of melanated skin but also embodies a message of positivity and empowerment, reflective of the rich heritage and resilience of the black church.”

“I enjoy playing funny characters, but it was a joy to play the villain in this offbeat comedy. I pray BET gives us Season 2 so I can really turn up the heat!”

Each item in the cosmetic line is affectionately named after biblical virtues and principles, and includes a “Church Bulletin” ‘How- To’ Guide.

Fans can look forward to more acting, comedy, makeup, a hair line and preaching from Lexi.

Her journey from hesitant singer to a multi-talented icon began at Bowling Green State University, eventually leading to her debut album, “Call Her Lexi” in 1990. Despite industry challenges, she remained unbroken, culminating in notable albums like “Phenomenal” and “Just Listen.”

Aria Wright, the Leading Lady transforming the Spirits industry

C

By Utamu Belle

CAMUS COGNAC’S UNITED STATES Brand Ambassador, Aria Wright is a leading lady in her role, as the first African American woman to serve in a fifth-generation family- owned cognac company. It is a role which holds tremendous cultural and historical significance for the South Carolina native, who is breaking barriers and challenging the traditional norms associated with the spirits industry. Wright is paving the way for diverse representation in what is commonly known as a male-dominated and predominantly white industry. “My presence is derivative of the importance of the need for diversity and inclusion in high-level industries. This opportunity allows for real accountability to take place. It allows for more diverse hiring and establishes relatable connectivity with our target consumers.” Wright’s story demonstrates that you can achieve any dream, with hard work, determination, and perseverance. Perhaps you can say that she was destined to walk along this path, having graduated from Temple University School of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration. “It was my aspiration to move to New York, so upon graduation, I moved to Brooklyn after accepting a job at NBC News. While at NBC, I met several people who worked in the music and film industries. I quickly realized that my position at NBC would not satisfy me in any way, so I pursued opportunities in music and film. I landed a job at Motown Records as a Promotions Coordinator, working with my mentor and music mogul, Sincere Thompson, and the rest is history.

“The music industry opened my eyes to many other career paths over the years and I developed and managed campaigns that created consumer experiences for brands across multiple categories.” In 2018, Wright started her own marketing and promotions company, The Industry Connection, where she successfully managed brand campaigns within entertainment, fashion, and spirits. Some of her most notable clients included AACA clothing, Miskeen Originals, the launch of Snoop Dogg’s Indoggo Gin, and CAMUS Cognac. Her previous work with CAMUS Cognac led her to officially join the CAMUS brand team as the US Brand Ambassador in 2022. Wright recalls that her interest in the spirits industry started when she left Motown Records and had an opportunity to travel outside of the country as a promotional assistant for Tanqueray Gin, which sponsored the Sinbad Soul Beach Music Festival Tour. “While on tour, I managed sponsorship activation duties. I loved every minute of it. I was young, and it allowed me to have fun, while meeting new people. I was never shy, so getting to know people came easy, and I became fond of learning their different preferences, habits, and what motivated them to purchase. That interest loaned itself to creating a pathway for me to establish deep connections with a wide range of people with varying lifestyles.” Towards the end of the tour, she was offered a role as Key Account Manager, managing several brands under the Schieffelin and Somerset portfolio, now known as Moët Hennessy USA.

“In my new role, I felt like the work I did had purpose. I was able to write national programs for luxury brands. I was able to see them come to life and provide job opportunities and mentorship to people I hired through the process. “I also found confidence in my abilities to manage the business of a multimillion-dollar portfolio, which was a significant personal accomplishment. I fell in love with the spirits industry and have realized exceptional personal and professional growth along the way.” As Brand Ambassador, Wright manages the brand’s education and community outreach programs that help establish brand awareness and build relationships with key customers, business partners, and personnel across the US. She brings a wide range of professional experience to the table. “I’ve mastered the art of understanding the importance of relationship management by building and maintaining great ones throughout my career and seeing how those relationships can help with my current role at CAMUS. Relationships are crucial to the success and longevity in this and many other industries. “I am laser-focused on my quest to create opportunities for women and to celebrate different backgrounds, experiences, and traditions that add depth and richness to the roles I consider and the products I represent.” While she admits that her role is challenging at times, given the competitive landscape in the US and CAMUS being new to this particular market, she’s had to rely on the strength of her relationships.

“I strategically seek to work with African-American entrepreneurs, vendors, key opinion leaders, and social influencers typically on events we produce, campaigns, or to create cocktail strategies. They are independently owned African-American brands and businesses. “I stand firm on making sure that the people at the forefront representing CAMUS in the US look like the target consumers. I am the face of the brand, so I am also committed to ensuring that CAMUS continues to progress with inclusivity, creating and providing opportunities for all people who look like me. In addition, I try to ensure we work with Black-owned suppliers and vendors and diverse communities, through partnerships and sponsorship opportunities.” This year, Wright’s focus is on establishing a larger community of brand loyalists and creating continuity with independent brands and entrepreneurs. She advises women taking up similar leadership positions to show up as their authentic selves, with experience, confidence, and readiness to take on new challenges. “I would encourage them to stay true to their beliefs because it will get challenged in rooms where they represent the minority. “The weight of being a woman leader in an industry that people view as male-dominated will be heavy at times. The beauty is that they will be standing on the shoulders of those strong women who were relentless in their quest to empower you to have a seat at the table.” Wright concludes that she relies on her beliefs, community, and support systems for motivation and empowerment.

from a once uncertain future. “I have known Khadeen since 18 years old,” he says, “I know her heart and she knows mine. With or without money, before and after the NFL, she continued to be my partner, my road dog, and is going to be my baby to the end.” The decision to exchange the X’s and O’s for a television or movie script was born upon a path of transformation and evolution that pushed boundaries and comfort levels, but resulted in a measure of triumph like no other—all from the lens of a camera. “When Khadeen and I decided to share our journey with others on social media, we wanted to not only represent Black love and family, but we wanted to be our authentic selves and connect with others going through similar or even different experiences,” says Devale, “We also wanted to share some laughs and entertain.”

Life’s preparation and tests that culminate into achievement are ones that cannot be undervalued when appreciating the intricate and complex paths taken throughout a journey to reach the ultimate destination. It’s the slaying of the dragon, the overcoming of the obstacles, that makes success taste that much sweeter—giving assurance that all hardships and sacrifices were not endured in vain. Former NFL player turned actor, Devale Ellis, costar of Tyler Perry’s hit show, Zatima and adored family man knows this all too well. From playing football as a wide receiver for Hofstra University, to a brief stint in the NFL—signed by the Detroit Lions from 2006 to 2008, and the Cleveland Browns in 2009—Devale was able to take the adversity faced from sustaining injuries and being cut by both teams, to drive his next game play and calling. But he did not do this alone. Born on April 2, 1984, in Brooklyn, New York, Devale and his wife, Khadeen, have become extraordinary exemplars of resilience and what it takes to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities, developing a multi-media empire 32

Entertain and connect they did. The success of their YouTube family vlog, The Ellises, has amassed a following of millions that tune in to see the couple’s transparent, tender, and heartwarming chronicle of a real-life, Black love, love story— complete with highs and lows. “Like many, we are not the same people we were at 18 years old,” he says, “We better understand our choice and decision to be in a partnership, and each day we choose to be here, and invest in each other. I continuously share with Khadeen what I need and desire and she does the same.” As parents to four adorable sons, Devale and Khadeen have created a community of relation and connection with the candid and nostalgic moments they experience as a family. Their podcast, Dead A** with K & D, is award-winning, and they even co-authored a best-selling book titled, We Over Me: A Counterintuitive Approach to Getting Everything You Want from Your Relationship. Witnessing the triumph makes it difficult to imagine a time the couple once considered divorce, but facing such a crossroad led to a deeper understanding of their relationship’s value. “You don’t really know if you love someone until adversity hits,” Devale says, “When adversity comes and everything is not as nice and wonderful as it was before the hardships,

that’s when you really get to see if you not only love the person you’re with, but if you’re committed to riding out the storm together. Through extremely difficult and challenging times, Khadeen and I held on and realized that even when circumstances were not ideal, we did not want to do life without each other.” With a bond that seemingly gives 100%/100%, rather than 50%/50%, the setback of the loss of an NFL career became a setup for a future brighter than Devale could have ever imagined. His pivot and interest in acting has been met with much acclaim, landing a role on Tyler Perry’s Sistas, that ultimately garnered him a spinoff in Tyler Perry’s Zatima, co-starring Crystal Renee Hayslett. Like the multitude of viewers that relate to the Ellises family vlog, many also relate to the relationship woes of Devale’s Zatima character, Zach, and the complex nature of modern relationships. “Zach and Zatima represent real life, in all of its good and bad” he says, “How many people have met someone that did not have a lot of money, later comes into money, and finds out he has a child with another woman, leading a couple to make some difficult choices and sacrifices. No matter how unbelievable it may sound to some, this type of situation and variances of it happen every day.” Along with being a devoted father and husband, Devale remains devoted to physical fitness, attributing his dedication to wellness to his tenure as a professional athlete. “Fitness became a huge part of my identity while playing for the NFL and remains a constant in all I do,” he adds, “Following my time with the NFL, I studied exercise physiology and kinesiology, became certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and started my own training program.” Detailing how he uses fitness to test his resolve and ability to get through adversity, Devale recognizes the importance of slow and steady, gradual accomplishments—noting how each goal achieved, leads to positive benefits in his mental health. “If I did 50 push-ups yesterday, the goal is to achieve 55 tomorrow. It builds endurance and fuels me psychologically.”

He preps for filming eight weeks prior, altering his diet where possible, cutting out dairy to reduce inflammation. “I cut dairy to bring down inflammation and red meat to reduce weight in my midsection,” says Devale, “I then consume chicken, fish, a lot less carbs and sugar. In eight weeks, I become leaner and gain more muscle while losing fat.” Though the eight-week regimen is specific to prepping for the stage or touring with his wife Khadeen, he dedicates time to working out every day for overall health. “I have to move at least 20 minutes a day. Those 20 minutes can consist of a brisk uphill walk, a jog, riding a bike, or jumping rope,” he says, “I also stretch for 15 minutes and incorporate some type of weight movement.”

I continuously share with Khadeen what I need and desire He and his wife also have and she does a parenting game plan that works. “My wife the same.

supports the kids on the academic side, and I support the kids on the fitness and well-being side,” says Devale, “Our children are incredible. I’m proud of them, and especially proud of how my oldest son Jackson has set an example for the younger ones to follow.” As Devale looks forward to more milestones with his family, taking his acting to the next level, and furthering the mission of he and his wife’s multimedia empire, he shares his thoughts on being declared “couple or relationship goals.” “Though we appreciate and admire the love, we try to shy away from it because we don’t ever want people to feel as though we are a perfect ideal of what a couple should be,” he adds, “We love being able to share our world and offer advice to others, however all of the answers to questions we receive about relationships are typically found within the relationship itself. We can learn from others, but we still have to do the work and have the desire to do the work.” upscalemagazine.com

SYDNEY MITCHELL In Her BMF Hair Era

From asymmetric Salt-N-Pepa crops to lengthy Poetic Justice braids, actress Sydney Mitchell is loving the throwback hairstyles she gets to wear on the hit drama BMF. Back for its third season, the Starz series from Executive Producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is inspired by the true story of the Detroit-based crime syndicate known as the Black Mafia Family. As the episodes move through the 80s and 90s timeframes Sydney, in the role of ride-or-die “LaWanda,” gets to flaunt some of the iconic hairstyles that defined those eras. “I changed my hair eight times this season,” says the actress about her evolving mane looks on the show. Here, the Atlanta native fills us in on the coif care moves that keep her hair always camera ready.

How does it feel slipping into “LaWanda’s” braided bob in Season 3 of BMF? It feels great! I feel the 90s era has been my favorite so far. We have the braided bob now, but we’re going to get into the Poetic Justice braids where they actually braided my hair—and that took about six hours. For Season 1 and 2, I wore wigs, like when I had this asymmetric “mushroom” style. For Season 3 we’re going into the 90s and [the show’s hair department] is tapping a little more into the crimps and braids.

STYLE PORTRAIT. BMF’s actress Sydney Mitchell strikes a pose worthy of a rising star. 38

UPSCALEMAGAZINE

/ upscalemagazine.com

Where do BMF hairstylists get their inspirations for “LaWanda’s” hairstyles? They have all of these old-school 80s and 90s magazines plastered around the hair trailer. I know they’re constantly doing their research. The hairstylists are so passionate! They’ll send me different styles and ask me what I think and what I like. When you walk in and see the whole trailer full of 90s and 80s hairstyles it’s crazy!

Away from the cameras, how are you wearing your hair? I am a wig girl off-set as well. I have about five human-hair wigs. I have one for every audition: a long one with blonde streaks, a shorter one that’s dark, a curly one that’s long, a bob that’s very short and then I have one with a straightacross bang. So depending on what I’m auditioning for, I switch it up. But since the show, I’ve started to wear my shoulderlength hair Natural…I’m more comfortable doing a ponytail with my own hair or just slicking it back. My hair is a little kinky; it’s kind of hard to get the comb through it! But since they keep it braided and they’re oiling my hair constantly [on the show], it has grown so much. What’s your all-time favorite coif care secret? Sea moss—it has made my hair grow so much and has done wonders for my hair and skin. You can get it on Amazon and most health food stores carry it. But, you have to get the pure one from St. Lucia. Some people blend it in their oatmeal but I just take a spoonful of the gel sea moss every morning.

GLAM PONYTAIL…“I love ponytails,” shares BMF actress Sydney Mitchell. “My hair was in there but some clip-ins were added for the ponytail in this photo.”

Do you have go-to hair care products? I really like the Mielle shampoo, conditioner and their oil scalp. I’m also old school: I grease my scalp with African Pride all the time. On my wigs, when I’m curling them, I use a spray by Mizani to make them “pop” a bit. If I do ponytails, I use Got2B (in the yellow can) or Style Factor Edge Booster. What’s the best hair care hint you picked up on the set of BMF? The biggest thing I learned is how helpful trims are. They trim my hair on set every 6-8 weeks. I don’t get a cut, but just trim away those dead ends that keep the hair from growing. I used to be a person who was super scared to trim my hair. But health is better than length. Once I started discovering that and let them trim my hair, it started growing like crazy! It changed the game for me.

IT’S A LOOK “LaWanda” on BMF wouldn’t wear but one that looks amazing on Starz beauty Sydney Mitchell.

Do you have a beauty philosophy you follow? Doing what works for you is what I advise. Sometimes I’ve gotten frustrated hearing: “You have to have a skin care routine. You have to put this on in the morning…” But wait a minute, that doesn’t work for me! So, do what’s best for your hair, for your skin for your body—do what’s best for you. It’s all about you. upscalemagazine.com

Top Stars Debut The Hottest Coif Trends Of The Season! WORDS BY JOCELYN AMADOR PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES FOR BET

There’s no doubt Black excellence was on full display during the star-studded 55th NAACP Image Awards! And when it comes to Spring 2024’s most beautiful mane moves, the award show’s red carpet did not disappoint. Here, check out just some of the hair trends you’ll soon be seeing everywhere…

40

UPSCALEMAGAZINE

/ upscalemagazine.com

TREND: BABY HAIR 2.0 The fascination with detailing the hairline with “baby hair” designs is still going strong. But for Spring ’24 it’s all about simplicity. Wave goodbye to elaborate shapes and say hello to a single curlicue or a lone c-shaped wisp. That’s all it takes to give this trend a modern vibe for the new season.

MISTY COPELAND is ahead of the “baby hair” trend by leaps and bounds! The prima ballerina details her gel-smooth style with a deep side part and a feathery curlicue at the brow. Chic!

DANIELLE BROOKS stuns—coming or going—in an accessorized ponytail detailed with a defined “c” curl at the brow. “The Color Purple” star opts for one dramatic curl to frame her beautiful face…and that’s all that’s needed.

KYLA PRATT adorns her smooth style with a streamlined “baby hair” pattern that stuns with its simplicity. The “Call Me Kat” celeb opts for a widely spaced design that’s as easy to do as it is flattering to wear.

QUINTA BRUNSON details wavy lengths with a graceful brow “ribbon.” A loosely shaped coil serves as a pretty accent on the “Abbott Elementary” star’s stunning red-carpet look. upscalemagazine.com

/ UPSCALEMAGAZINE

41

TREND: SCULPTURAL DESIGNS

Braids, twists, cornrows and coils become even more beautiful this season. Building on sculptural qualities, this season’s silhouettes are meant to be admired as works of art…and rightly so.

NOVI BROWN is getting her flowers thanks to the hit TV show “Sistas.” But the gorgeous celeb can also be found wearing her bouquet—thanks to a coif featuring braided lengths ending in silver-dipped “rosebuds.”

EVA MARCILLE looks absolutely regal in this majestic upswept design. Take a style cue from the “All The Queen’s Men” leading lady and opt for sculptural twists arranged to flow gracefully off the face, with volume concentrated at the back.

HALLE BAILEY never fails to look lovely in her Natural style on screen (“The Little Mermaid,” “The Color Purple”) or on the red carpet. Here, twists upgrade the classic partial upsweep and take it to a new style level.

TARAJI P. HENSON shows us how a small braided detail at the brow can shift the style conversation. A pretty plait starts out petite adorning “The Color Purple” star’s sleek crown (shown here) then morphs into a super-long rope braid down the back.

TREND: MODERN MINIMALIST

The allure of a streamlined, sleek silhouette is hard to resist. These modern manes run the gamut from slicked-down lengths to pressed-smooth textures to close-cut profiles.

KEKE PALMER shares the “Password” to one of this season’s hottest hair trends is: minimalistic. She proves it with this low chignon that’s sleek, chic and striking.

TICHINA ARNOLD is taking us back to the future with this smooth, shiny crop. “The Neighborhood” star’s look is a nod to the “Mushroom Cut” that graced hair magazines everywhere back in the day. But for 2024, this version of the crop skips the harsh lines along the perimeter and instead opts for feathery edges at the bangs, on the nape.

TREND: TEXTURE PARTY

You’re invited to celebrate every version of gorgeous coif texture this season! There are no rules when it comes to the of versatility of curls, kinks, waves…just like there are no limits to your beauty. TEYONAH PARRIS turns up the volume on her magnificent mane and we’re all here for it! The “No Good Deed” star details the coif with a braided crown melding into a plaited ponytail base from where voluminous curls emanate.

AUNJANUE ELLISTAYLOR spices up the style mix this season with duo-tone curls on this pretty cut. “The Color Purple” star flaunts gold spirals at the crown blending to burnished hues at the base. The effect: enchanting.

CLAUDIA LOGAN is ready for her close-up with these plush waves. The “Diarra from Detroit” celeb details her lengthy style with a precise center part while structured waves cascade down to frame the face with terrific texture.

TREND: HIGH-RISE SILHOUETTES

This Spring, upswept manes are reaching new heights! Why play small when you can go tall with a coif that’s made to attract the attention you deserve? Opt for high-rise hair when the need to make an entrance strikes your mood.

ANDRA DAY takes our breath away with this coiled and twisted coif reminiscent of an Egyptian queen. The “Rise Up” singer does just that with an upswept design detailed with glints of scarlet on an auburn base.

YARA SHAHIDI tweaks the topknot by softening the silhouette overall via loose, face-framing ringlets and luxe curls piled atop one another. The “Grownish” beauty proves just how flattering a high-standing silhouette can be! upscalemagazine.com

UNBOUGHT AND UNBOSSED Shirley Chisholm biopic makes debut BY UTAMU BELLE

The awe-inspiring true story of the first Black Congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm made its way on screen on March 22. The Netflix biopic, “Shirley,” starring Oscar winning actor Regina King, alongside Lance Reddick and Terrence Howard is centered around the historic trailblazing campaign moves by Chisholm, who also became to first Black woman to run for president of the United States in 1972. While the film opened to mixed reviews about its storytelling, Chisolm’s unwavering fight for social justice and equality is something which undoubtedly cannot be downplayed. Starting off her career as a teacher, Chisholm fought hard to represent minority students. It was her fierce personality and dedication to activism which led her involvement in local politics; ultimately breaking the gender barrier which paved the way and set the stage for Black women to be fearless about entering the political arena. One of the most inspirational advice given by Chisholm:

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
