PUBLISHER’S LETTER

BLACK BEAUTY REIGNS E rick R obin son Ph otogra ph y

For this issue, upscale Publisher Bernard Bronner celebrates the 2024 Bronner Brothers International Beauty Show, and talks to our cover girl, Kandi Burruss, who has always displayed stunning style, from the stage to the screen, or the boardroom. In reverence of the cultural pride and significance of Black beauty and hair, Bernard asks Kandi about some of the things she loves most.

pg 30

BB: What do you love or admire most about Black hair? Kandi: I love that we have so many different ways to express ourselves. You can see and feel a person’s entire vibe by the way they rock their hair. From a natural press, to kinky—a 40-inch, to locs, or braids, we have so many different spirit animals that we can express with the style of our hair.

Bernard Bronner Publisher

Ceobernardbronner Bernardbronner Bernardbronner

BB: What is your go-to hair style for a regular day or a day of relaxation? Kandi: A bob is a hairstyle I love to wear on more relaxed days because it is easy and does not get in the way, especially if you’re doing activities with the kids. You have more flexibility, yet you’re still cute and trendy! BB: What do you do to replenish yourself after a busy day or week? Kandi: I enjoy getting my nails done and talking with my close friend and nail technician, Nita. I get a chance to unwind catch-up with her, and really relax.

BY TASH VAN DOMIEN

RECOGNIZED AS A RISING STAR by DownBeat Critics Poll in 2020 and the first black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition in 2021, Brandee Younger is a talented Harpist. Brandee was born and raised in Hempstead, New York. She would listen to hip hop, R&B, Soul, and gospel, genres where the classical musical instrument is rarely featured. In fact, as a preteen, Brandee played the NEXT flute and would play duets with a colleague of her father, whom she credits for introducing her to the Harp. Playing the Harp was initially a conduit for academic advancement. Brandee studied classical music at both the undergrad and graduate levels. She practiced by playing music she enjoyed and loved; however, as she gained experience and maturity, she realized that it was bigger than her; it was about representation. In her words, “[a] combination of how I put this instrument not only in this style of music but at the forefront”. Brandee aspires to normalize the Harp, a notably white-dominated instrument, in different genres of music. While the Harp is viewed as a novelty instrument for most, it is commonly used by many famous artists we know and love. It is just rarely identified by sound. Brandee herself has played on tracks by Beyoncé, John Legend, Common, Lauren Hill, Drake, and Kanye West. “It is common to see a piano [and] a saxophone. I would like to normalize [the Harp] outside of the orchestra… so that people recognize what it sounds like” without seeing it, and definitely seeing it more often. Blazing a trail in the Harp world for Brandee does not end with its sound and inclusion in different genres and ethnic/cultural circles but encompasses fashion. Brandee has employed a unique fashion style throughout her career. To play the Harp, one has to sit with their knees apart to manipulate the instrument, Brandee had to adjust her outfits accordingly. Brandee wears a lot of jumpsuits and catsuits in bright colors, things rarely seen in the Orchestra. She strives to dress practically, given the nature of her instrument and cute, with articles that work for her body and her style. “I feel like this is something I can have for myself… it’s all about functionality, but can it be cute at the same time?” She happily quipped. Although Brandee is not presently working on new music, she is on tour featuring music from her two albums Brand New Life and Somewhere Different. Her most recent album, Brand New Life is a homage to the late Dorothy Ashby, the African American Jazz Harpist and her progenitor. Described as an interpretation of Ashby’s music through Younger’s musical lenses, the album blends the two harpist styles in a collaborative 10-track audio compilation. Brandee’s tour runs until June 2024 in select American states, Canada, Japan and parts of Europe. 12

BY FRANCESCA ANDRE

During the COVID-19 pandemic, entrepreneurs encountered unprecedented challenges. However, amidst the chaos emerged stories of resilience and community support. Johanne Brierre, the founder of NYBeautySuites, exemplifies this spirit of innovation and empowerment. Brierre’s foray into the world of beauty entrepreneurship wasn’t merely a business venture; it was a response to a pressing need within her community. Witnessing firsthand the plight of small beauty and wellness entrepreneurs, particularly minority women, who bore the brunt of the pandemic’s economic fallout, she recognized an urgent need for support. Many of these entrepreneurs, deemed non-essential workers, faced sudden unemployment and financial strain. This realization fueled Brierre’s determination to bridge the gap, providing a lifeline for those grappling with uncertainty. “NYBeautySuites emerged as a response to the critical issue of providing a safe space for beauty professionals to continue their practices, maintain their livelihoods, and rebuild their businesses in the face of adversity,” says Brierre. Beyond addressing immediate economic challenges, NYBeautySuites aims to create a sustainable solution for long-term success. It provided a supportive environment where beauty professionals could thrive despite adversity, fostering a sense of community and stability in an uncertain landscape.”Our goal was not only to address the immediate economic impact but also to offer a sustainable solution for the long term,” explains Brierre. “We sought to empower the next generation of professionals to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic and beyond” Beyond her professional achievements, Brierre finds fulfillment in personal growth and community engagement. Her love for travel and culture enriches her perspectives, while her dedication to supporting local businesses strengthens her sense of purpose. Whether exploring new destinations or actively participating in

BEAU T Y community endeavors, Brierre’s commitment to personal and communal well-being adds depth to her journey beyond professional success. In the post-pandemic landscape, entrepreneurs in the beauty and wellness industry face multifaceted challenges. Financial strain, limited access to capital, inflation, rising operational costs, and evolving consumer preferences create a complex environment. “With the right resources and resilience, entrepreneurs can navigate these challenges and position themselves for sustained success”, Brierre notes. She emphasizes the importance of comprehensive approaches that include financial support, technology innovation, adaptability, and community engagement. Brierre’s unwavering commitment to supporting small businesswomen and entrepreneurs has earned her various accolades and recognition. Yet, for her, success wasn’t merely measured by professional achievements; it was defined by her ability to foster strong, equitable communities. She envisions her role as a catalyst for positive change, fostering environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. To aspiring entrepreneurs, Brierre offers invaluable advice rooted in continuous learning, collaboration, and mentorship. By embracing these principles, entrepreneurs can build successful ventures while making a positive impact on their communities. In conclusion, Johanne Brierre’s journey with NYBeautySuites epitomized the transformative power of entrepreneurship. Through her resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to community empowerment, she not only weathered the storm but also paved the way for others to thrive. In a world marked by uncertainty and adversity, Brierre’s story serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and resilience—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, light can still shine through. u p s c a l e m a g az i n e . c o m

PETS

PET LOVERS

T i p s f o r s ho rt-term rent als and accommodat ions BY ANNITA THOMAS

MANY SHORT-TERM RENTALS WELCOME your fur babies and are animal lovers too. The requirements vary from

property to property. And, the situations where your pet will visit can be very different from home. Here are a couple of questions to ask – 1. Is there an age or size limit? 2. Is a kennel available, or do I need to bring one for my pet while I’m out of the house/room? 3. Pet fee – how much, and is it a one-time fee or daily fee? 4. You know your pet. Does your pet have any destructive tendencies? You may want to reconsider taking them if the behavior could be very damaging to the accommodation. There could be substantial fees if your pet destroys items that need repair or replacement. 5. Consider the needs of your pet – potty breaks, walks, levels of anxiety that may cause barking or upset stomachs. If you’re staying in a high-rise condo, it could mean several trips up and down the elevator/steps to go outside. 6. Bring along a flash light for night time potty breaks. Ask about the rules for pet waste and how that should be handled around the property. There may be rules and regulations in the area. 7. You never know if there will be other pets where you’re staying. This includes the short-term rental property and rest stops along your journey. Place your pet on a leash to avoid conflict with another animal. Ask your rental host if there are other animals on the property and if there will be any possible contact with your pet. 8. Are you required to have specific vaccinations, medications, etc. for your pet? Bring along vet paperwork to confirm your pet is up to date on all shots and meds. 9. Does your pet enjoy time with you on the sofa or at bedtime? Bring a blanket to cover the furniture. However, it is best to follow the house rules at your rental. Plus, it is a courtesy to the next renters to not have your pet sleep in the bed with you. The next guest could have allergies and even deep cleaning may not rid the area of all pet dander. 10. Ask – What type pets are allowed. Some rentals may not allow cats. Do not assume all animal types are allowed.

With four GoodVets locations in the Atlanta Metropolitan area- West Buckhead, Dunwoody, Toco Hills and West Midtown - one can say Dr. Charles McMillan is a successful veterinarian. But what is the measure of success? For Dr. McMillan, it’s doing what you love, helping others, providing high-quality service, representation, and affecting change. Dr. McMillan prides himself on having a diverse and bright practice group that the community can see themselves in and engage with easily. His long-term goals include highquality outcomes for both his clients and his team, exceptional service, and a low turnover rate, addressing issues such as the high number of burnouts within the medical profession. What was a constant through my life, since I was very young, was my love and passion for animals and that I wanted to care for them in some form or capacity…I was always big on nature and caring for creatures large and small. animals. From as early as four years old, he found his calling. In fact, in elementary school, as part of a time capsule exercise, the Atlanta doctor wrote as future careers, a veterinarian, a zoologist and/or an entomologist, which is the study of insects. “What was a constant through my life, since I was very young, was my love and passion for animals and that I wanted to care for them in some form or capacity… I was always big on nature and caring for creatures large and small”, he emphasised. When asked about GoodVets and how he became involved with the veterinary care platform, Dr. McMillan simply stated that he ‘believed in their mission’. He explained in detail how he bonded with the leadership; they built trust in each other and set the perimeters of their partnership. Although GoodVets is a national franchise, it allows each veterinarian the autonomy to grow and lead their practice on their terms, with a special emphasis on community engagement and quality service. Dr. McMillan was, therefore, able to realise his vision, to be as involved as he wanted, to choose from team members and locations to designs and pricing. With the support of his family, Dr. McMillan’s practice has grown tremendously. With four locations in the Atlanta area, all sporting the modern, upscale aesthetic of the GoodVets brand, the Atlanta resident Veterinarian assures that each location provides high-quality outcomes and quality medication, educates the clients and has the best interest of their pets at heart while projecting a welcoming environment for both clients and team members. According to Dr. McMillan, the idea is to provide an experience that is enjoyable to both the team and the clients and every aspect is well thought out to achieve this goal, from the design and cleanliness to amenities and free offers. His hospitals offer individualised care for pets, including wellness and preventative services, diagnostics, routine check-ups, and advanced surgery, as well as urgent care. As the first Black Owner and Medical Director at GoodVets, Dr. McMillan is committed to building a diverse, inclusive team and creating a welcoming environment where all clients can receive best-in-class services. u p s c a l e m a g az i n e . c o m

The founders of PROUD HBCU GRAD cross paths at a boys camp sponsored by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. immediate family members, mentors, and neighbors that attended Albany State University. The very next year, we started our freshmen year at Monroe High School where we both were student athletes, in a Junior Fraternity (DDB), and worked part-time at Wendys together. At a young age we were intrigued on how business worked and we both found joy in earning our own money. After graduating from high school, we both were excited and looked forward to going to college. Bruce received a track scholarship to Auburn University, and just 45 minutes away, I got accepted to Alabama State University. Bruce was a student athlete and I worked full time throughout college. Just like in high school, we worked together during the summer and experienced college life when time permitted. After graduation, I embarked on a career in retail management and Bruce went on to become an entrepreneur. We both eventually went on to embark on a host of business ventures. Fast forward to 2021, we wanted to do something that would make a huge impact on the rich heritage of HBCUs and create a brand to celebrate our history and legacy. Our

common experiences, shared vision, and exposure to the HBCU culture growing up became the driving force behind the formation of PROUD HBCU GRAD. 2 Starting a company often involves overcoming challenges. What were some of the initial hurdles you faced, and how did you navigate them to establish Proud HBCU Grad? Yes, with any business you will be face with challenges and adversity. Initially we were face with the aftermath of the pandemic and a slowly recovering economy. We also faced challenges with sourcing reliable and quality manufacturers, and separating friendship from partnership. Within time, we learned to do our due diligence by researching, leveraging our resources, and learned that our differences actually was a strength not a weakness. 3 C ould you shed light on the funding journey of your company? How did you secure initial capital, and what strategies have you employed to sustain and grow Proud HBCU Grad? With any new startup company, funding, capital, and resources is vital to your success. Due to our past experiences, business knowledge, and planning & preparation, we were fortunate to have the capital to fund PROUD HBCU GRAD. To sustain our company, initially we relied on revenue generated from our homecoming season and vendor Pop-Ups to make it through during our first year in business. We learned to be lean and efficient, make wise product selections, and created very little overhead and expenses when possible. We learned from our past experiences and well as others while allowing the marketplace to be our teacher. 4 In what ways has the HBCU experience shaped the unique identity of Proud HBCU Grad's apparel compared to other brands in the market? The Black Lives Matter movement was the driving force in encouraging our community to band together, control our spending power, and support black everything. To us, the HBCU experience is more than a trend, it’s history being made right before our eyes. Unlike other brands, we didn’t only want to SUPPORT HBCUs, we wanted to recognize and celebrate HBCU GRADS while encouraging our youth to consider attending a HBCU as they seek higher learning.

To this day we understand that there are many HBCU graduates that don’t receive opportunities and are not respected in corporate America. HBCUs produce great leaders which go on to model Black Excellence. Lastly, our mission is to give back by honoring HBCU graduates, offer quality products, and provide exceptional customer service. This is what makes PROUD HBCU GRAD exceptional and unique. 5H ow do you envision PROUD HBCU GRAD contributing to the broader narrative of HBCUs and the black community? We envision PROUD HBCU GRAD being a major contributor to HBUCs, future graduates, and the black community by providing scholarships, sponsorships, and a platform to showcase and celebrate black excellence. We want to use our platform and brand to make history and carry on the HBCU tradition and legacy. 6 Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the future of Proud HBCU Grad? Are there specific milestones or goals that you're aiming to achieve? We aspire to be a national brand, a staple in the community, and a trailblazer in the fashion industry. We look forward to our PROUD |FUTURE HBCU GRAD brand being worn as a badge of honor, with a sense of proud like the FUBU brand in the 90s. Although we’ve been fortunate to collaborate with Amazon in the recent past, we would love to establish partnerships with major companies in the near future. We have goals of being on shelves in major retail stores and are patiently waiting on the day that we are blessed to walk away from our careers. Lastly, we want our SUPPORT HBCUs brand to be the logo that bridges the gap and promote inclusivity for those that didn’t attend and graduate from a HBCU. 7 As successful black entrepreneurs, what advice do you have for aspiring business owners, especially those who are inspired by your journey with Proud HBCU Grad? We advise aspiring business owners to acknowledge, understand, and accept that it just may take your brand at-least 3 years before you even start to see profits and gain momentum. Due your due diligence, work hard but smart, build relationships, and strive to deliver exceptional customer service. Lastly, stay humble, live your purpose, and remember who you serve. upscalemagazine.com

JOHN LIPMAN, MD, FSIR, A HARVARD trained fibroid and UFE Expert at the Atlanta Fibroid Center is passionate about helping women with fibroids. The most common signs of uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and increased menstrual cramping. Uterine fibroids are a common health concern affecting millions of women across the country, but Black women are three times more likely to develop fibroids. Despite this, many black women are unaware of the warning signs. Dr. Lipman states, "The most common signs of uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and increased menstrual cramping." Heavy bleeding can lead to a deficit in iron and hemoglobin which could also result in anemic symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue, migraines, dizziness, hair loss, and changes to skin and nail health.

Dr. Lipman has been instrumental in bringing the Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) Procedure to the forefront of fibroid treatment. UFE is a minimally invasive, non-surgical approach that targets the blood supply that feeds fibroids. He says, it’s a 30 minute out-patient procedure without anesthesia or hospital stays. This procedure offers several benefits over hysterectomy, including preserving fertility, shorter recovery times, lower risk of complications, and patients are simply sent home with a band-aid.

Although the cause of fibroids is still unknown, Dr. Lipman believes that is because there has been very little money spent As more Black women are seeking help instead of continuing in fibroid research. However, he stands as a beacon of hope to suffer in silence or thinking their monthly menstrual through his contributions to the field. He works tirelessly pain is normal, a concerning trend is emerging. When Black to understand the causes and best treatments and strives to women seek medical treatment for fibroids many are only offered hysterectomies as the only option. A hysterectomy D, empower Black women with knowledge and options. Not only for individual patients, but he is pushing for systemic change. is a procedure that removes the entire uterus from a woman. He is actively involved in efforts to get legislation passed in Dr. Lipman, shares that while hysterectomies can be a valid Congress that mandates that parents are informed about all treatment option, they can have lasting implications for a available fibroid treatment options, ensuring they have the woman’s fertility and overall health. Kandi’s Next Act!

The Wiz Revival Photos compliments of Florida’s Historic Coast

The coveted success’preneur has her eyes on Broadway and commits to advancing the exceptional talent of the theater’s Black creatives and performers with the revival of The Wiz.

It was January 5, 1975, when Charlie Smalls’ original play, The Wiz, a musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, opened at the Majestic Theater on Broadway, grabbing the attention of theater goers everywhere. Following the production’s vast support and interest, the play was later adapted into a film in 1978, with an all-star cast that featured Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, and Mabel King. As a treasured family classic for many Black families, some may have thought that it could never get any better than the sensational Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, easin’ on down the road and into our hearts. Well, it does. upscalemagazine.com

Kandi Burruss, her husband and co-producer, Todd Tucker, and a dynamite team of fellow producers and creatives, have been on a mission of heart, in their development of a revival of The Wiz—and its one that allows us to still hold close affection for the original, while endeavoring to find something unique and extraordinary to adore in the new. “We want to revitalize an appreciation and interest in the arts and the theater within our Black communities and the world,” says Kandi, “I love Broadway, and I am passionate about bringing more of our African American stories to the page and the stage.” Kandi is no novice to success, and akin to the poignant lines in the infamous poem of Harlem Renaissance legend, Langston Hughes, she has a track record of working hard to not have her “dreams deferred.” Atlanta born and raised, she hit the music scene as a teenager in the early 1990’s, as one of the lead vocalists in the popular R&B group, Xscape. As a songwriter and producer, Kandi created hits for artists like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran, NSYNC, Pink, Destiny’s Child, and TLC, with the hit, “No Scrubs,” earning her a Grammy award in 2000. She has starred in more than 10 seasons of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and displayed her acting talents as Roselyn Perry in Lena Waithe’s series for Showtime, The Chi. With a multimedia agency, Kandi Koated Entertainment, her Atlanta-based restaurant, Old Lady Gang, and other projects to add to her already impressive portfolio, she has a keen eye and instinct for manifesting success. Realizing the value of creating change through art, Kandi set her sights upon the performing arts, first producing Thoughts of a Colored Man in 2021—the first-ever play to feature seven African American men on a Broadway stage, unraveling their raw and vulnerable stories to the audience. “It was one of the first plays to come back and open on Broadway during the pandemic,” she recalls, “There were of course challenges, but I was so proud of the hard work of the cast and crew, and really appreciated the support of those that were able to come out and see the play.” A history-making production, everyone that worked on the play were all African American, proudly shining a light on the enormous value and need for diversity in the theater. “Not only are we telling stories that our communities can identify with and foster connection from, but having a Black director, playwright, choreographer, or costume designer, shows others, especially our young ones, that they can dare to dream, and with hard work, can ultimately become.” Continuing the mission to show that Black productions can be successful and supported by the community and the world, her second production, the 2022 Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, The Piano Lesson, was produced alongside Brian Anthony Moreland, Sonia Friedman, and Tom Kirdahy, and secured LaTanya Richardson Jackson as the director—the second Black female director Kandi has had for a play. “To have LaTanya produce the play was unbelievable,” she reflects, “Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Brooks, Trai Byers, were a part of the cast, and it is a moment I will never forget.” The play earned Kandi a Tony Award nomination in 2023, the highest honor that can be achieved for distinguished achievement in theater.

Not only are we telling stories that our communities can identify with and foster connection from, but having a Black director, playwright, choreographer, or costume designer, shows others, especially our young ones, that they can dare to dream, and with hard work, can ultimately become.

The revival of The Wiz aspires to do the same with an updated script, a unique twist, and special easter eggs to look out for. “The revival is relatable to today’s world, and adds some humor and comedy,” she says, “Amber Ruffin did an incredible job with the screenplay. She is known for bringing the laughs out!” The current run features Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody Betts as Aunt Em, Avery Wilson as Scarecrow, Phillip Johnson Richardson as Tin Man, Kyle Ramar Freeman as Lion, Wayne Brady as The Wiz, and newcomer, Nichelle Lewis, as Dorothy. “It was important to create an opportunity for new talent to make a mark,” says Kandi, “Nichelle is a powerhouse and dedicates herself, like all the others, to giving a stellar performance each and every show. Broadway is eight shows a week and it’s a lot of work. Everyone that works on the production, especially the performers on the stage, give it their all to ensure the audience sitting in the seats at that time, feels like it’s the first time the play has ever been performed.” The color, vibrance, and energy of the production is courtesy of the set and costume designers, and choreographers, of which Kandi showers much acclaim upon. Original scores of the songs, “Ease on Down the Road,” and “Home,” will be included in the revival, along with some new songs that will have everyone, including little ones, singing along. “My younger children, Ace and Blaze, were able to see the show, and they sang and danced,” she reflects, “I want kids to enjoy it and really take something away from it.” Earlier this year, Kandi made the decision to step away from the Housewives franchise, however her goals for the future are ones that she beams about. “I have a chance to do more of what I want to do and not what I have to do,” she says, “I get to go even harder after my dreams and elevate in other areas like acting and producing.” When considering the importance of the community’s support of the arts, Kandi mentions the significance of action and investment. “If we want to see more positive representations of our community—or if we want to see more plays or productions that feature African Americans, we have to show up in numbers and use our presence and buying power to declare what we value, and what we want for our communities today.” With plans to produce more plays and continue to create more opportunities for others, Kandi’s thoughts when asked what her legacy would be, immediately go to her children and her desire to make a way for others. “My children are my legacy and I hope they see me as a woman who really inspires others to go after their dreams and make it happen. I want to kick in more doors and leave them open for more African Americans to accomplish bigger and better things, moving us further and further along.”

ore than 25 years ago, the world was introduced to a fresh-faced, beauty from the DMV area that graced our screens with a spirited dance, red lipstick, and a voice that flowed like honey. The premiere of the song and video for It’s All About Me, the title track of her 1998 freshman album, honored classic, triple-threat entertainer, Mýa, with entry into a talented court blessed with other 90’s R&B stars, like Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah. “I started out as an onlooker, admiring the work of these incredible artists,” says Mýa, “To have an opportunity to be in their company, and even still do shows with Brandy or Monica today, is absolutely wonderful.” In 2023, she celebrated the 25th anniversary of her inaugural album and title track, with a sultry, remixed video performance, choreographed with Brian Friedman, who also worked with Mýa on her 2003 video for, “My Love is Like Wo!” “Being able to work with Brian again and go back to where it all began—giving my fans another vibe and performance to enjoy, was truly a full circle moment,” she reflects, “The anniversary was a celebration for my fans because we’ve been on this journey together. They give me continuous support and inspiration.” Born in 1979, Mýa grew up surrounded by the rich arts of Chocolate City aka DC. Her father had experience as a musician and singer, while her mother had experience arranging orchestral music for instruments. At an early age, the star became highly involved in the performing arts, participating in plays, gymnastics, and recitals. “I developed a deep and infinite love for Broadway. I studied many of the triple-threat, all around entertainers that gave so much to creating such extraordinary art. As I watched and learned from tap masters and greats like Gregory Hines, it really motivated me to be open to enjoying my time as a student of the arts and explore. Everything is an extension and expression of self. You can take the basics, fundamentals, techniques, and make it your own.” Her gift for singing and dancing continued to shine even more when It’s All About Me was followed up with the smooth, second single, “Movin’ On,” featuring Silk the Shocker, and third single, a delightful ballad titled, “My First Night with You.” Earning a certified platinum freshman release, Mýa’s second album, Fear of Flying, released in 2000 and featured the pulsating hit, “Case of the Ex.” She earned a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2001 for her collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, and Pink, for the remake of the song, “Lady Marmalade,” for the film, Moulin Rouge. As an actress, she was cast in the Oscar-winning musical, Chicago, and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Having much experience and success with a record label, Mýa continues her achievements as an independent artist, releasing music from her label, Planet 9, founded in 2008. “I started small and was willing to learn what independence looked like. When I stepped into the light and embraced the opportunity to become independent, I was able to executive produce my own projects, own my masters, and really be more hands on with the process.” Her hard work as a producer, songwriter, and creative genius, generated exceptional albums like K.I.S.S. (2011), T.K.O. (2018), and her 2016 album, Smoove Jones, which earned a Grammy nomination. Aside from the triumph of her professional accolades, Mýa finds involving herself in meaningful, philanthropic initiatives, to be essential to her life. “My mother is a two-time cancer survivor, so participating in walks and symposiums or other speaking events to educate, inform, and support others in their journeys is important to me.” Along with her commitment to animal welfare, health and well-being, she stresses the value of promoting love of self and her advice for young people that may be impacted by social media. “I believe in unplugging. The more things we tune into, the more overloaded we become, whether positive or negative,” she says, “Remember that when you see someone on a glamorous vacation, or with an abundance of material things, you are only seeing a mini snap-shot of that person’s life. So much of it is not real life, 24/7.” When asked about new music, Mýa says the fans have spoken and she has listened. “New music is coming very, very, soon. Get ready to dance!” upscalemagazine.com

It was a tale of two individuals finding joy in each other’s company, showcasing the enduring power of genuine connection. Their love is timeless, standing strong and has remained resilient through the years.

Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz along with husband-and-wife producers Asante White and Jasmine K White were able to gather content for an entire decade and pull the pieces of Mr. Perry’s life from his childhood trauma to present triumphs and tribulations he overcame. As time unfolded, Mr. Tyler Perry and activist, model and filmmaker Gelila Bekele’s journey continued. Their love story inspired those who witnessed the beauty of love in its purest form. Their union, a beacon of unconditional love, showcased that true connection goes beyond fleeting trends and societal norms. Tyler and Gelila’s story serves as an inspiration—a reminder of the enduring strength and beauty found in authentic, unwavering commitment.

What a joy to see even amidst a breakup in 2020 between Tyler Perry and Gelila Bekele that she had the strength, resilience and unconditional love and respect for the father of her child and her friend to push forward and complete the assignment. This biopic was an emotional tearjerker and explained a tiny bit more information than the public had into the life and trials of Mr. Tyler Perry.

It was refreshing to see filmmaker/writer Gelila and her production team’s hard work over the past 10 years come to fruition in the biopic “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story”’ Gelila Bekele and Tyler Perry stood tall and proud, hand in hand on the red carpet on of the Amazon premiere, appearing as a genuine united front. ‘The Tyler Perry Story’ directed by 44

Hopefully, the world can take a page out of Tyler & Gelila’s book of relationships, friendship, co-parenting, and the ability to bow out gracefully with your head held high with dignity and trust. Being selfless and putting the common interest of your child’s future welfare is not an easy task when your personal feelings and heart is on the line. Job well done Tyler and Gelila!

RENAISSANCE MAN DOLAPO ERINKITOLA KEEPS RISING TO THE TOP BY JONELL WHITT

The Educated Director, Producer, Businessman, Dolapo Erinkitola is not setting any limits to the heights of where his professional career moves will take him and continues to embark on new journeys. In three short years in the world of film and television, Erinkitola has garnered over 15 production credits. He would be remiss if he didn’t credit his two-parent upbringing as part of his success story. Upon graduating from high school Dolapo’s journey resonated with determination, learning, and strategic decision-making. His father’s insistence on reading the book “IACOCCA” the autobiography of Lee Iacocca that highlighted the consequences of growing up affluent without understanding the importance of financial diversification. Despite attending Law School and venturing into the restaurant industry, Dolapo harbored a deep-seated aspiration to become an actor. Confident that Hollywood success awaited him, he bypassed filling out multiple college applications, only to confront the reality that his parents expected him to self-fund his Hollywood dream. Dolapo quickly adjusted his course and ended up graduating from Morehouse College gaining immense respect for HBCU’s. Armed with a solid education and his parents’ support, he delved into the world of business. This time around the focus was on the Director/Production and business side of film and the industry, rather than pursuing an acting career. In Dolapo’s words, “What you learn in business is transferable in several different industries. Because business is business.” His strategic approach involved leveraging his business acumen across film, restaurant, and the music industry. The pivotal question for him became, “How do I execute?” Dolapo began to teach as well as become a student of the importance of carving out a path, believing in it, and investing in one’s brand. While navigating through the world of film and production Dolapo identified critical aspects for success. First, recognizing the value of the talent’s time, production efficiency, and cost management. Atlanta, he noted, had become a hub providing all the necessary elements for a successful production. He also highlighted three key challenges in the industry. Firstly, the tendency to view projects solely as money grabs, neglecting long-term gains. Secondly, inadequate budgeting that fails to consider post-production and marketing expenses. Lastly, the need to pay individuals what they are worth, fostering a sense of value within the project. Realizing the importance of collaboration Dolapo teamed up with producer Coke Daniels for the project ‘Karen’ on BET + as well as the highly anticipated upcoming film ‘Water Boys’ which will drop in 2024 starring Quavo “The Amigos”, Lala Anthony (Power), Omar Dorsey (Queen Sugar) and more. Dolapo’s journey from a determined dreamer to a seasoned professional reflects the essence of strategic thinking, adaptability, and a perpetual commitment to learning. He is owner of Dolapo E. Productions and co-owner of So Amazing Studios with Jennifer Pessima. Dolapo’s commitment to the arts moved his to create DSR which is Dolapo’s Screening Room, a safe space for industry professionals to network, gain insights, and showcase their work. Erinkitola is also the owner of the Blue Lagoon Bar & Restaurant in Atlanta, GA and the Havana Cigar Lounge & Restaurant in Sandy Springs, GA.

A humanitarian, musician, and actress: Jessica Antoine is taking the entertainment industry by storm. As a first generation American from Haiti (by way of Miami), Jessica is pioneering the way for other young artists, breaking generational curses, and being sure to give back to others. Since 10 years old, Jessica knew that her God-given purpose in life was to inspire others and be a representative voice of her country through her artistry and her new EP titled “Intentional” co-written alongside Elijah Blake and Finn Matthews is just that, intentional. Giving the perfect fusion of rich Haitian music, catchy Pop, and sultry R&B she draws her inspiration and makes her best music when thinking about Haiti’s rich musical history. Feeling the beat of African drums, dancing to Kompa music, and reminiscing about “the real’’ Haitian radio while picturing herself on the beach under the sun are just a few of the many ways that she ensures she stays true to her tradition and delivers music that is meaningful both to her and others. Whether it is volunteering her time, giving back to others in non-profits, or lending her platform for others to have a voice, Jessica remains humbled and rooted in her “why”, always remembering that to whom much is given, much is required

EMPOWERMENT ZONE RETIRED MILITARY VETERAN SEGUES INTO AN EXCITING LIFE OF CREATING INDIE MOVIES AS A FILMMAKER. BY LESLIE E. ROYAL

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Thelma C. Brown dreamed of being an actress a child. Those dreams were paused as she matriculated at Grambling State University. She transferred to Northwestern State University where she was commissioned into the ROTC program. After earning her degree in Business Administration, she enlisted in the United States Army. A decorated, combat veteran with an impressive list of assignments here and abroad, she retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 25 years of dedicated service. “The reason I became an actress after the military was to help with my mental health. When I retired from the military, I found myself in a place that, unfortunately, a lot of veterans find themselves. Alone, depressed, sad, detached, and in the dark. (PTSD) Acting helped bring me to the light. It was the thing that got me out of the house. It was my escape,” says Thelma.

She had roles in television shows including Atlanta Homicide, Fatal Attraction, American Detective with Lt. Joe Kenda, and numerous others. She’s built on those on-screen laurels and is making moves and creating waves off-screen. She is the owner of a film company, producer, and director. Thelma’s company has produced seven movies and co-produced others. Her first movie was called True Love. It followed with Date Night, Exodus 20:13, I Just Love That Man, Waiting Room, Corona Love, and Neighborly Visit. Two of the movies were selected to be a part of the International Choice Film Festival. I Just Love That Man won awards for Best Female Director and Best Sound Design at the Bettiah International Film Festival in 2022. “I started my productions company Taking Care of Buziness in 2019 and changed it to Taking Care of Buziness Enterprises in 2021. I wanted to make films that would inspire women to overcome life’s

adversities. My and every other filmmaker’s goal should be to entertain, educate and empower,” says Thelma. Never forgetting her personal struggles with PTSD upon leaving the military, she is now a Peer Mentor and Peer Leader for female veterans with the Wounded Warrior project. She is a member of Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Having many projects in the works, she always takes time to focus on her son DeMichael and grandbaby Avery. “I love what I do because it is my way of giving back to my community and the world. Through my filmmaking I get to tell the stories about stuff I have heard people I grew up with talking about,” says Thelma. “The Lord has blessed me with so much. I’m a cancer survivor, tumor survivor, was deployed twice and returned with all my soldiers, lived through 9/11, and the DC sniper. Every day I’m still here on earth I’m blessed.”
