Welcome to the University of the Basque Country

All of us, working at the International Office, wish you a very warm welcome to the University of the Basque Country. We are glad to know you chose our university and our region for your academic or research stay. Over one thousand students, lecturers and researchers (mainly from Europe, Canada, the US and Latin America) join us every year and we are ready to go the extra mile to support you, so that you keep fond memories of your stay among us.

We have conceived this handbook aiming to help you with your adjustment process, both at our university and our community. Here you will find a detailed description of the university, its structure, campuses and courses catalogue. Details on the steps to take and requirements to be met before leaving your country, upon arrival at the Basque Country and before you go back home are also to be found here. The sections dealing with our grading system or our academic calendar information will help you plan your travelling dates.

This handbook contains information regarding student services you can benefit from and, additionally, a section describing the region where we are located, i.e. the Basque Country. We would like you to enjoy our landscapes and culture; once you are with us, you will become a full member of our community and we wish to assist you accordingly.

The final section of this handbook includes suggestions by former visitors. We trust you will find the content of this reference book useful and, remember: our Help Centre staff is always available for anything you might need.

The University of the Basque Country is a public, integrating and non-restrictive institution. We are strongly committed to research, intelectual leadership and social engagement.

Our courses catalogue is varied and comprises a wide range of programmes in all fields of knowledge, from Health Sciences to Business, Art or Architecture. More specifically, our offer consists of over 60 undergraduate programmes, around une hundred master programmes (over 30 of which hold the Label of Excellence of the Spanish Ministry for Education. The University of the Basque Country is number one among Spanish universities in the number of labels) and over 60 PhD programmes.

The University of the Basque Country is a key element of a bilingual people. The Basque Language has identified our region for many centuries; ‘Euskara’ is the only Pre Indo European language still alive in Europe. Teaching is essentially bilingual, that is, each student chooses their language of instruction. Besides, over 100 courses, master and PhD programmes are taught in English or French; the use of foreign languages as a language of instruction is steadily increasing in our University.

The University of the Basque Country is a research institution particularly concerned with knowledge transfer and innovation. Our connection with surrounding technology and research institutions was cardinal for us to define and lead our Euskampus Project, which got us distinguished as ‘Campus of International Excellence’ by the Spanish Ministry for Education.

Few places can match the advantages of the Basque Country for both life and career. With its first class public system, strong production industry, the region also benefits from mild weather, luxuriant nature and a rich and welcoming culture. The University of the Basque Country is committed to echoing this unique land and continually strives to preserve and enrich its culture.

1.1. Our campuses 1.1.1. Campus of Araba The Campus of Araba comprises 9 Faculties and Schools located in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Vitoria-Gasteiz The administrative capital of the Basque Country has over 230,000 inhabitants. Its vast green areas and the low carbon footprint of locals have made it possible for Vitoria-Gasteiz to be designated ‘European Green Capital 2012’.

Vitoria-Gasteiz stands on a historical pathways intersection; one of the Saint James´ Way routes crosses the city centre and its almond shaped old district is just gorgeous. You will be able to visit the restoration works at Santa María cathedral, main inspiration for Ken Follett´s ‘A world without end’. If you enjoy Modern Art, Artium museum will surely be your first choice. The local patroness festivities, ‘La Virgen Blanca’, and many other cultural and entertaining events taking place throughout the year will help you enjoy even more living in this pleasant and comfortable city.

The province of Araba boasts a large number of archaeological sites and other remarkable monuments.

You will also have many chances of visiting this region while walking in woods and natural parks. Not far from Vitoria-Gasteiz you will find trekking trails, mountain bike routes, water sports options and paragliding clubs.

How to get there

• The local airport is located 9 km away from Vitoria-Gasteiz city centre. You will be charged approximately 15 Euros for a taxi ride to the city.

• You might like to fly to Bilbao: Buses run every 30 minutes from the airport to Bilbao city centre and to the bus terminal, TERMIBUS. From there, you can take a bus to Vitoria-Gasteiz. Check frequencies and running hours at www.autobuseslaunion.com. Last bus at weekdays is around 10 pm and earlier at weekends!

• Some low cost airlines fly to Santander-Parayas airport: Buses run daily from here to VitoriaGasteiz (2 ½ hours ride. Approximate fare, 10 Euros). Check frequencies at www.alsa.es.

1.1.2. Campus of Biscay A total 13 Faculties and Schools make up our biggest campus. Along with 5 of them being located in downtown Bilbao, we have 6 faculties in our University complex of Leioa (15 km from Bilbao), 1 in Barakaldo and 1 in Portugalete.

Bilbao The biggest city in the Basque Country stretches along the estuary of river Nervión, 11 km inland from the Gulf of Biscay. It is the financial capital of the region and has around 370,000 inhabitants, although the metropolitan area goes up to around 1 million citizens.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (Frank O. Gehry, 1997) gave rise to a new beginning for a formerly industrial city submerged in the 80´s recession. From the moment this winding titanium structure opened to the general public, the most renowned architects and designers have worked in Bilbao: Sir Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Santiago Calatrava, Javier Mariscal…The upturn undergone by the city has led to Bilbao being granted the Lee Kuan World City Prize in 2010.

People in Bilbao are friendly, optimistic and good tempered; the vibrant cultural life of the city turns, at dusk, into a varied, pepped nightlife. A visit to the local ‘cathedral’, the Athletic Football Club stadium, the ‘7 streets’ section and Bizkaia suspended bridge (a century old Unesco World Heritage site) are a must for every visitor.

How to get there

• Bilbao airport (Loiu) is approximately 10 km away from the city. Buses run every 15 minutes from the airport to the city centre (from 6.15 am to 11.15 pm). The line terminates at the local bus station, TERMIBUS. From here, you can walk or take the metro almost everywhere in the city.

• The central railway station, Abando, is connected to several international railway routes.

1.1.3. Campus of Gipuzkoa It is composed of 11 Faculties and Schools; 10 of which are located in Donostia-San Sebastián and another one in Eibar (60 km away from Donostia-San Sebastián).

Donostia-San Sebastián Donostia-San Sebastián, the capital of Gipuzkoa, is a small city with a population of 180,000. It stretches around the ‘Concha’ bay and is a popular tourist destination. Donostia has recently become a well-liked surfing spot and Zurriola beach is always full of waves enthusiasts. The city is just 20 km from the French border (Hendaye is the closest French town), so it is very easy to visit the French Basque Country.

Besides its natural beauty, the city enjoys a busy cultural life (Jazz Festival, International Film Festival…), countless sports activities and traditions. All of this summed up for the city to have been designated ‘European Capital of Culture 2016’.

Cuisine is a cornerstone of Basque culture: meals are the key element at every celebration. First class products (vegetables grown by local producers, a significant fishing sector and excellent meat) together with our long-established love for gastronomy, result in eye-catching counters full of tapas (locally known as ‘pintxos’) in every bar around the city and several Michelin starred restaurants.

How to get there

• San Sebastián airport: 20 kilometres from the city. Due to its small size, only a few domestic flights land here. Tickets are usually very expensive. Several buses link the airport to San Sebastian city centre (Plaza Gipuzkoa). Expect an approximate fare of 2 Euros. Check running hours at www.interbus.com.es.

Other nearby airports: • Bilbao airport (Loiu) is located 10 km from downtown Bilbao. There are also direct buses from Bilbao airport to San Sebastian (1h15minutes, approximate fare 15 Euros). Check frequencies at www.pesa.net.

• Biarritz airport (in France www.biarritz.aeroport.fr): Located 1h20minutes from San Sebastián. Very limited public transportation options. Check running hours and frequencies at www.transdevatcrb.com or www.pesa.net.

• Several TGV lines (Train à Grande Vitesse) link Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse… to Hendaye railway station.

Once in Hendaye, walk out the SNCF station; to the right you will find EUSKOTREN station, where trains will take you, every 30 minutes, to Donostia-San Sebastián (this train terminates at Amara district – Plaza Easo). The ride takes 40 minutes and a single ticket is around 3 Euros. The last train departs from Hendaye at 10 pm. Check running times at www.euskotren.es • Alvia trains link Madrid & Barcelona to San Sebastian twice a day in slightly more than 5 hours. Check discounts and frequencies at www.renfe.es.

Besides our traditional winter programmes, our summer courses take place in our three campuses and enjoy a great attendance success. 1.4. Academic info 1.4.1. Academic calendar Our academic year is divided into two semesters. Lessons start at the beginning of September and continue until the end of December. Back from the winter break, you will have exams corresponding to the fall semester and immediately after, in February, the spring semester kicks off. After the spring break (Easter week), exams are taken from May to June or July.

1.4.2. Assessment System Final grades are usually obtained after a written test, based on the knowledge and skills acquired by the student during the semester. Some courses, however, include the completion of practical exams, field reports or laboratory work.

The Bologna educational method is based on continuous assessment of the student´s progression. All exercises, reports, compositions and practical work done by the student throughout the semester are of relevance for final grades.

1.4.3. Grading scale The Spanish grading system is numerical (from 0 to 10) and textual. A minimal score of 5 is required for the student to pass.

1.4.4. ECTS Credits The European Credit Transfer System is already established in all Higher Education institutions across Europe. 60 ECTS credits correspond to the work done throughout one academic year; likewise, 1 ECTS credit stands for 25 hours of learning activities performed by the student. The ECTS system is used for qualifications recognition procedures among different countries.

Mobility programmes at the University of the Basque Country Sicue, mobility in Spain The Spanish Universities´ Presidents Conference manages this mobility programme among universities anywhere in the country. An average 70 students coming from different Spanish regions visit us every year in the frame of Sicue programme.

Erasmus programme, European exchange Approximately 500 European students choose the University of the Basque Country as their host institution within Erasmus. We hold around 500 exchange agreements with European universities and we stand among the 30 most active institutions in terms of mobility.

Erasmus internship programme Students at the University of the Basque Country can travel to a foreign country with a view to undergo supervised practical training in a range of companies and businesses.

UPV/EHU-Latin America, UPV/EHU-Other Destinations Over 45 bilateral agreements support our increasing partnership with Latin American countries, the US, Canada, New Zealand, Russia or Korea. Over 120 yearly visitors travel to the University of the Basque Country in the frame of these arrangements.

Some weeks before the academic year starts, an Intensive Spanish course takes place ce in each of our campuses. 2.2. Accommodation

There are several accommodation options for visitors at the University of the Basque Country: • Shared flats for students (prices vary from 300 and 450 monthly Euros per pax).

• Room rented in a flat with local inhabitants (usually the owner). Anticipate around 550 & 600 Euros/full board; 335 to 370 Euros/half board; and 250 to 400 Euros/room with laundry & kitchen access.

The Accommodation service at the University of the Basque Country incorporates a detailed flat & room database. You can access the database registering on our website: https://www.ehu.es/ostatu/pisos/index.html The system will ask you to attach a document that states your acceptance at the University of the Basque Country and you will be granted a user name and password to access the database for a 30 day period. We always advise our visitors to visit the places (check the location and distance to the campus, make sure the flat and furniture are in a good state…) before taking any decision, signing a renting contract or paying any deposit.

• Students’ residences. Contact and booking procedures should be done directly with the residence you are interested in, for each one of them has different requirements, services and availability. Prices range from 275 to 700 Euros/month, depending on the size and type of accommodation you choose.

2.3. Medical insurance

EU residents should obtain the European Health Card in their home countries. We additionally recommend our visitors to have their own medical insurance covering travel accidents, theft and subsidiary civil liability.

For non-EU visitors, it is mandatory to be covered by a private medical insurance valid for the length of your stay. The insurance should at least comprehend accidents, medical expenses and repatriation. Please, contact your National Healthcare System and your closest Spanish Embassy to find out more about medical insurance conditions required to get an entry visa.

The autonomous community of the Basque Country, Euskadi, is one of the 17 regions composing Spain. It is a small territory, similar in size to Rhode Island state (USA), the metropolitan area around Lille (France) or the Rhein-Ruhr territory in Germany. Its alpine relief is combined with 246 kilometres of coastline alternating spectacular cliffs and fine sandy beaches. The Basque Country has preserved its age-old culture, language and character throughout History. The main features of Basques (slightly more than 2 million citizens) are their powerful looks, energetic personality and love for their family, their land and their traditions.

The Basque Country is divided into three historical territories or provinces: Araba, Biscay and Gipuzkoa. The administrative capital of the Basque Country is Vitoria-Gasteiz, however Bilbao is the largest city in the region. Donostia-San Sebastián is the most popular tourist destination.

3.1. Money matters

As you probably Campus de Alavaknow, the Euro is the currency used in the Basque Country. Life standard in our cities (Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Donostia-San Sebastián) is similar to that of certain European capitals: Barcelona, Rome… Monthly expenses can vary between 700 and 800€, depending on the type of accommodation you choose.

It is vital to bear in mind that during your first days, you will need a considerable sum of money: opening Campus de Bizkaia a bank account, purchasing transport seasonal tickets, handing over accommodation deposits, personal effects…Once the initial arrangements are completed, expenses quickly stabilize.

3.2. Food

Food is a milestone of Basque culture. In our region, along with a popular conversation topic, food is always at the core of any social event and celebration. Breakfast and dinner are usually light meals, whereas lunch is usually a three course meal. Fish is a basic ingredient of Basque cuisine, for locals have always been expert fishermen and successful sea explorers. The usual eating times are: Breakfast from 8 to 10 am; lunch from 1.30 to 3.30pm and dinner from 9 to 10 pm.

In our university, you will find restaurants and snack bars in all three campuses; you will be able to purchase good quality food at unbeatable prices.

3.3. Medical services

EU nationals can obtain their European Health Card at their own national Healthcare Centre so as to access local medical centres. Non EU visitors should contract, unless specific bilateral agreements exist, a medical insurance covering accidents and repatriation while among us.

3.5. Languages

There aredetwo official languages in the Basque Country: Basque and Spanish. Everyone knows Spanish, Campus Alava whereas Basque is a minority language; it is largely spread around Gipuzkoa territory, although you can also hear it often in Bizkaia. Across Araba, Basque language is spoken to a smaller extent. All roads, airports and administrative signs are written in both languages.

3.6. Religion and spiritual traditions Campus de Bizkaia

Spain is a traditionally catholic country; however, our 1978 Constitution Act guarantees everyone´s freedom of faith. Temples and praying rooms of different traditions can be found in the largest cities in the country.

3.7. Weather

The usual weather in the Basque coastline, from Bilbao to Donostia-San Sebastián, is mild and humid.

The average temperature varies from +10ºC in the winter to an approximate +22ºC in summertime.

Vitoria-Gasteiz, on the other hand, is located in an inland, continental weather zone. Temperatures are more extreme (3ºC to -5ºC in the winter and around +25ºC in the summer months) and it doesn´t rain so often.

3.8. Business and shops opening hours

Traditional and small shops and offices are usually open from 9 am to 1.30pm. After a lunch break, they work from 4 pm to 7.30 pm.

Bigger, international businesses and malls don´t shut at lunchtime and remain open from 10 am to 9 pm.

Public administration offices and banks are open to the public only in the morning, from 9 am to 1 or 2 pm, from Monday to Friday.

During your first week, you spend quite a llott of Money; My fellowship allowance didn´t turn up until a few days after I arrived and in the meantime I had to pay for a temporary accommodation, get my transport monthly tickets, give out a deposit in the flat I decided to stay… It is important to come with money; once your fellowship is discharged, everything goes smoothly.

Our number one advice!

Taking part in Exchange University programmes is a unique experience; you will meet people from around the world and will make a lot of new friends. But remember, travelling to a foreign country involves certain difficulties, especially at the beginning: Do your best to arrive in the Basque Country with a few notions of Spanish language; you will have to communicate with locals from the ďŹ rst day and you will probably study (at least partially) in Spanish: learning in a new environment and in a foreign language is rather demanding. Keep reasonable expectations, especially regarding accommodation; nothing will be exactly like at home, for the purpose of travelling abroad is to know different cultures and learn contrasting lifestyles. Be exible: as soon as you get used to the local pace and culture, your stay will be a memorable experience.
