Director/Curator’s Introduction JANUARY 2021

I have been directing and curating the USC Fisher Museum of Art since 1981.

It has been my practice to offer exhibitions to as large a number and range of artists as possible, knowing how many working artists there are and how relatively few opportunities exist for museum shows. Furthermore, I always seek to balance contemporary art with displays of our permanent collections of older art. With these as my guiding principles, I rarely offer more than one exhibition to any single artist. However, with Dan McCleary’s body of work celebrating twenty years of printmaking in Oaxaca, I am breaking that rule. I do this for several reasons: first having to do with the quality of the art itself, but second honoring his extraordinary contributions to the richness of the creative ecosystem of Los Angeles. Finally, I take pride and pleasure in celebrating the unique nature of the relationship Dan has built with Fisher for close to ten years.

With all that in mind, I want to write first about my directorial and curatorial vision of “Dan McCleary Oaxaca: 20 Years of Prints from the Taller Sangfer,” not so much as a stand-alone project, but rather as a second chapter of a two-part exhibition. Part One was the painting exhibition we held at Fisher in January of 2015. “Every Day Sacred” focused on Dan’s remarkable meditative figure paintings from 1993 to 2013. Dan represented his subjects as cut off from the frenzy, passions, and dramas that infused their worldly existences. The work is a reminder of the quiet buried in all of our daily existences-- a quietude that is indeed sacred but seldom memorialized. As Christopher Knight so aptly noted in his Los Angeles Times review, “McCleary endows small acts of everyday perception with hushed reverence.”

The art featured in Part Two is of a different nature. Here we move to another medium, to the printmaking that grew out of Dan’s profound relationship to Oaxaca. The works featured in this exhibition are an example of Dan McCleary

Ha sido mi política ofrecer exhibiciones al mayor número y gama de artistas posibles, consciente de la gran cantidad de artistas activos pero las pocas oportunidades de exhibir que brindan los museos. También ha sido mi práctica buscar un equilibrio entre exhibiciones de arte contemporáneo y exhibiciones basadas en nuestras colecciones permanentes de arte más antiguo. Con estos principios como guía, rara vez ofrezco a un artista más de una exposición unipersonal. Sin embargo, ahora que Dan McCleary celebra 20 años de trabajo en grabado en Oaxaca, voy a transgredir esa regla.

Lo hago por varias razones: primero por la calidad de su arte, segundo para festejar su extraordinaria contribución a la riqueza del ecosistema creativo de Los Ángeles, y finalmente, para celebrar con orgullo y regocijo la particular relación que Dan ha forjado con el Fisher en los últimos 10 años.

Con esto en mente quiero explayarme, primero, sobre mi visión directiva y curatorial que generó “Dan McCleary, 20 Años de Grabado en Oaxaca,” no como un evento aislado, sino como la Parte Dos de un proyecto formado por dos exhibiciones correlacionadas. La Primera fue la exposición de pinturas “Cada Día Es Sagrado,” que tuvo lugar en el Fisher en enero de 2015 y que presentó las meditativas pinturas figurativas producidas desde 1993 al 2013. Dan en esta serie representaba sujetos desvinculados del frenesí, las pasiones y los dramas de su existencia terrena; aludía así al silencio que subyace en nuestra existencia diaria, una quietud de hecho sagrada pero que rara vez se conmemora. Como acertadamente Christopher Knight señaló en su reseña para el Los Angeles Times, “McCleary le confiere una callada dignidad a los pequeños actos perceptivos del diario vivir”.

taking residence, not just in a different geographical place, but in a different mind-set. Twenty-two years ago, McCleary was introduced to Oaxaca by artist, James hd Brown and Alexandra Brown who had recently moved there with their three children. Dan began traveling regularly to Oaxaca.

In the year 2000 he committed himself to work with legendary printmaker Fernando Sandoval. He found himself challenged by etching techniques that were new to him. The colorist painter we knew well in Los Angeles here dedicated himself to black and white etchings. Dan thus became absorbed in his life as a printmaker in Oaxaca. The city has since become a second home for him.

It is in and around Oaxaca that Dan’s and my life converged. Oaxaca, about the time it became a part of his life, had become a second home for me as well. Its culture-driven nature led me to write a book about Oaxaca in 2004. I dedicated myself to doing my own research, cultivating my own artistic relationships, and my museology practice under the aegis of USC’s International Museum Institute in Mexico. One of the most salient things that Dan and I shared in our attraction to Oaxaca was our sustained respect for the practice of artists giving back to the community that had nurtured them. This practice was brought to new heights by one of Mexico’s most storied artists, the late Francisco Toledo.

His multiple civic projects and political activism remain legendary. They include the art library and gallery at IAGO, as well as residencies and workshops at CaSa where Dan has returned many times to teach drawing.

Dan got to know artist, Demián Flores at the Fisher Museum during the run of an exhibition of his work I presented in 2006. He visited Demián on his next trip to Oaxaca. He was inspired by the work Demián Flores was doing at La Curtiduría, an art collective and laboratory for critical thinking. It was also a revolutionary way of creatively examining the indigenous art out of which his own practice grew.

Taking inspiration from the community work of Francisco Toledo and Demián Flores, Dan began Art Division in the MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Art Division houses an extensive art library, a film lab, print and painting studios, and an art gallery. Both Fernando Sandoval and Demián Flores have held workshops there.

Hace 20 años, Dan conoció a Oaxaca a través del artista James hd Brown, y Alexandra Brown, quienes se habían mudado recientemente a este lugar con sus tres hijos. Desde ese momento, Dan comenzó a viajar regularmente a Oaxaca. En el año 2000, se propuso trabajar con el legendario grabador Fernando Sandoval. Las técnicas de grabado eran nuevas para él y representaban un desafío. El pintor colorista que conocíamos muy bien en Los Ángeles, se consagró allí al trabajo gráfico en blanco y negro. En Oaxaca, Dan se compenetró con la vida del grabador. La ciudad desde entonces se convirtió en su segundo hogar.

Fue allí en Oaxaca y sus alrededores donde mi vida y la de Dan convergieron.

Al mismo tiempo que se volvía parte de la vida de Dan, Oaxaca se convertía en mi segundo hogar. Yo estaba igualmente maravillada con esta ciudad centrada en la cultura y, en el año 2004, escribí un libro sobre Oaxaca. Desarrollé mi propia investigación, cultivando mis propias relaciones artísticas, y mi práctica museológica bajo la égida del USC International Museum Institute en México. Dan y yo compartimos un profundo respeto por la práctica de los artistas oaxaqueños que beneficia la comunidad que los ha nutrido.

Esta práctica alcanzó nuevas alturas en uno de los artistas mexicanos más celebrados, el ya fallecido Francisco Toledo. Sus múltiples proyectos cívicos y su activismo político son legendarios. Su aporte incluye la biblioteca de arte y galería en IAGO, y también las residencias y talleres en CaSa, a donde Dan ha regresado muchas veces a enseñar dibujo.

Dan conoció al artista Demián Flores en el Fisher durante una exposición de su trabajo que presenté en el 2006. En su siguiente viaje a Oaxaca, Dan visitó a Demián. Allí le impresionó lo que Demián estaba gestando en La Curtiduría, que era un colectivo artístico y a la vez, un laboratorio de pensamiento crítico. Era, además, una manera revolucionaria y creativa de examinar el arte indígena a partir del cual se había desarrollado su propia producción artística.

Around 2016-17 USC Fisher Museum of Art found itself profoundly engaged with Art Division. Together, Dan and I created a USC residency at Fisher open to all of his students as well as to my own Museum Studies students. The Fisher Museum was given over to Art Division at that time. Art Division and USC students mingled and learned from each other, exhibiting and studying together.

Concurrent with the Art Division exhibition was “Montar la Bestia,” an exhibition organized by Demián Flores. It consisted of work by Mexican artists about the train used by many immigrants to travel north from Central America and Mexico.

A relationship between Art Division and La Curtiduría was forged at this time and a few years later we held a second exhibition, “Dos Collectivos- Prints from Art Division and La Curtiduría.” It originated at the Fisher and is presently working its way through Mexico. Dan’s and my relationship is thus intertwined with his art, but also with his artistic persona, his dedication to community, and my profound and enduring admiration for Art Division.

THE PRINTS The Skulls “The Skulls” was the first series of prints that Dan made in Oaxaca. They move from apparent simplicity to complexity of both meaning and technique. Nos. 1 and 2 were created by the close observation of Mexican clay skulls. Both prints employ dark crosshatching and pure line, thus sharing technique and existing as partner pieces. They seem stripped of locality. In that autonomy they remind me of the work of Giorgio Morandi. Like him, McCleary has a way of disconnecting the artwork from cultural but not art historical connection.

Indeed, Dan brought a book of Morandi’s complete prints with him to Oaxaca.

McCleary remembered that Morandi almost never used aquatint. Dan was resistant to it himself, mostly because he believed aquatint to be seldom executed well.

Fernando Sandoval, though, encouraged Dan to try using the medium.

Skull No. 3 shows a stunning change as Dan moves to aquatint and etching combined. This, and the subsequent prints, are now based not on the simple clay skulls, but on the colorful sugar skulls that are ubiquitous in Oaxaca. In No. 3, the

A partir de los años 2016-17, el USC Fisher Museum of Art desarrolló una profunda y comprometida relación con Art Division. Juntos, Dan y yo, creamos una residencia de USC en el Fisher abierta a todos sus estudiantes como también a mis alumnos de estudios museológicos. El Fisher Museum fue práctimante cedido a Art Division en ese momento. Los estudiantes de Art Division y USC aprendieron unos de otros, estudiaron y expusieron juntos.

A la par de la muestra de Art Division, presentamos “Montar la Bestia,” una exposición organizada por Demián Flores que reunía obras de artistas mexicanos sobre el tren que muchos inmigrantes usan para viajar hacia el norte desde Centroamérica.

Se fue forjando un vínculo entre Art Division y La Curtiduría y unos años después presentamos una segunda exposición: “Dos Colectivos – Grabados de Art Division y La Curtiduría.” Esta muestra se inició en el Fisher y actualmente está recorriendo México.

Mi relación con Dan se basa en su arte y su persona artística, pero también en la profunda y sostenida admiración que tengo por Art Division.

LOS GRABADOS Las Calaveras “Las Calaveras” fue la primera serie de grabados de Dan en Oaxaca. La gama de la serie abarca desde grabados de aparente simplicidad hasta obras de temática y técnica complejas. Los grabados 1 y 2 se originaron en el estudio minucioso de calaveras mexicanas de arcilla que Dan plasmó alternando entramados oscuros y línea pura. Estas obras comparten la misma técnica. Ambas parecen desprovistas de coordenadas locales. Esta autonomía me recuerda a Morandi. Como él, McCleary tiene la habilidad de desvincular sus obras del contexto cultural a la vez que mantiene las conexiones con la historia del arte.

background becomes deep, dark, and velvety; almost like pure night with the merest scattering of points of light that come through on close examination. This is no longer a generic skull. This image transcends its origin and takes on the feeling, to this observer, of a mask.

With No. 5 one is transported entirely to the world of masks. This image reads as if it had entered into a Lucha Libre universe. The head for the first time is swiveled to the left, and the light comes in from that side, perfectly controlled.

The skull has taken on a kind of lively and startled emotion.

Dan has transformed these sugar skulls into objects that, upon examination, seem to have become precious, jewel-like, more like a piece of amulet sculpture than a mass-produced item. The teeth are no longer just glitter. They are now gems, sparkling. The skull’s meaning, although obscure, has moved entirely into the realm of the world in which it was made. It is a product of work that was created in Mexico and breathes of no other place.

The Other Prints As Dan leaves the skulls behind, he concentrates his printmaking subjects mostly on the human figure. When he left Oaxaca in 2000 he had done only one other print that was not a skull, and that was an etching of a young man, Jesús Villafán, who was a printer in the shop. It is a pure line etching. The quick and intimate nature of the subject is counter-posed by the deeply etched lines, whose depth and richness add a kind of gravitas to the otherwise immediate aspect of the print.

Dan McCleary’s portrait of his friend Alexandra Brown is a pure manifestation of line etching. It is as much a tribute to pure drawing as it is to Alexandra.

Fabiola is a tour de force. Dense crosshatched hair on her left side is leavened by the light coursing in on her right. The background is just hinted at over her left shoulder.

Alice, from the same period, seems to be all light. She has a more variegated background scratched into the plate. She is defined by a tranquility that seems to imbue so many of Dan’s human subjects.

Man Stirring Coffee is sunk inside himself, oblivious to all around him. His hand and cup are without weight but his jacket is heavy and filled with corporeality .

De hecho, Dan se llevó a Oaxaca un volumen con los grabados completos de Morandi. Dan sabía que Morandi casi nunca usaba aguatinta y también restringió su uso, principalmente porque opinaba que rara vez era implementada satisfactoriamente. Fernando Sandoval, sin embargo, animó a Dan a probar esta técnica.

La Calavera Número 3 exhibe un cambio asombroso. Dan la realiza combinando aguatinta y grabado. Estos grabados y los subsiguientes ya no están basados en las simples calaveras de arcilla, sino en las coloridas calaveras de azúcar, tan habituales en Oaxaca. En la número 3, el fondo se torna profundo, oscuro y aterciopelado. Casi como una noche cerrada con un sutilísimo moteado de estrellas que sólo se revela a la atención esmerada. Esta ya no es una calavera genérica. Esta imagen trasciende su origen y se torna, para la observadora, en una máscara.

Con la Número 5 una es transportada completamente al mundo de las máscaras. La imagen parece haber entrado al universo de la Lucha Libre. La cabeza, por primera vez está girada hacia la izquierda, de donde emana una luz perfectamente controlada. La calavera ha cobrado una emoción vivaz y asombrada.

Dan ha transformado estas calaveras de azúcar en objetos que bien observados parecen haberse vuelto preciosos como gemas. Son más afines a amuletos escultóricos que a artículos producidos en serie. Los dientes ya no son brillantina.

Ahora son joyas resplandecientes. El sentido de la calavera, aunque oscuro, se ha desplazado completamente al mundo que la ha generado. Es un producto creado en México que respira el aire de ningún otro lugar.

Los Otros Grabados Luego de las calaveras, Dan dedica sus grabados mayormente a la figuración.

Al dejar Oaxaca en el 2000, había realizado solo un grabado que no era una calavera. Era uno del joven Jesús Villafán, un grabador del taller. Es un grabado ejecutado en pura línea. El carácter ligero e íntimo del sujeto está contrabalanceado por los surcos profundos de las incisiones. Esta profundidad, esta riqueza le confieren cierta gravitas a una imagen que de otra forma sería efímera.

Both Man on Cellphone and Woman Putting on Makeup, from this prolific period are also unengaged with the viewer. The Man on Cellphone is rapt, engaged only with his phone, while the woman seems to be on hold, blankly staring out at us. Woman Puttng on Makeup is a study in elegance, while the man in it remains at her side—again, not with us.

Chef is a striking figure. He sports a kind of determined reticence. His tight mouth and half-closed eyes do not invite conversation. His hair is remarkable: thick, short, brushy, and memorable. The chef’s jacket is indicated once again by line and the spareness of the image of Alexandra.

Sauna is the only picture of a nude in the series, and rare in Dan’s oeuvre.

Also rare is the sense of an environment—more benches and furniture than in any other of these works. There is also an odd, almost aggressive engagement of the subject with the viewer that one does not usually see in Dan’s work.

This period closes with the 2006 Christ. It is a copy of The Head of Christ by Correggio in the collection of the Getty Museum. As contemporary viewers, we feel that nothing is left to the imagination or for us to fill in: the crosshatching offers the modeling; what looks like line at first blush is hatching when one looks closely. This image would probably not have been made in Los Angeles on 6th Street where the art is unremittingly of the moment and secular. This Christ fully succeeds as a religious object. It does not feel contemporary in the sense that we define contemporary—as challenging and questioning—but it is contemporary in that it was created by a living artist who was raised in the Church. Unsurprisingly, it was created in a city where that same feeling still does exist. I have several times heard it said that Mexicans are more religious than they think they are, even if they are less religious than we think they are.

In 2006, at the time Dan was making the Christ print, a conflict erupted in Oaxaca between the teachers and the government. There was civil unrest for a number of years and it was not safe to travel there. Dan did not return until 2010 when he began another intense cycle of printmaking, almost entirely dedicated to flowers. With the encouragement from Fernando Sandoval he also began a series of drypoint portraits.

El retrato de Dan McCleary de su amiga Alexandra Brown es una manifestación emblemática del grabado lineal. Además de un tributo a Alexandra, es un tributo al dibujo puro.

Fabiola es un tour de force. El oscuro entramado del cabello en su lado izquierdo se compensa con los trazos ligeros a su derecha. El fondo está apenas insinuado sobre su hombro derecho.

Alice, del mismo período, parece pura luz. Un fondo más heterogéneo ha sido inserido en la placa. Parece estar imbuida por ese sosiego que reina en tantas obras de Dan sobre seres humanos.

El Hombre Revolviendo Su Café está hundido en sí mismo, ajeno al entorno.

Su mano y la taza son ingrávidos pero su chaqueta es pesada y plena de corporalidad.

El Hombre Hablando en Su Celular y la Mujer Maquillándose, de este prolífico período, también parecen ajenos al espectador. El Hombre Hablando en Su Celular está absorto, conectado sólo con su teléfono, mientras la mujer parece estar “en espera” mirándonos con ojos vacuos. La Mujer Maquillándose es un compendio de elegancia, mientras que el hombre permanece a su lado, también ajeno a nosotros.

Chef es una figura imponente. Posee una suerte de reticencia resoluta.

Su boca apretada y sus ojos entrecerrados no invitan a conversar. Su pelo es notable: frondoso, corto, tupido y memorable. La chaqueta del Chef está, otra vez, sugerida mediante líneas y el tipo de austeridad que vimos en Alexandra.

Sauna es el único desnudo de la serie, y es un género escaso en la obra de Dan. También poco común es su sentido de ambiente - más bancas y muebles que en ninguno de sus otros trabajos. Hay también una extraña, casi agresiva conexión del sujeto con el espectador que no es usual en el trabajo de Dan. Este período concluye con Cristo de 2006. Es una copia de la Cabeza de Cristo de Correggio de la colección del Getty. Como espectadores contemporáneos, sentimos que nada está librado a la imaginación o abierto a ser completado por nosotros. El entramado ofrece el modelaje; lo que al primer vistazo parece línea, se revela entramado cuando una se acerca. Esta imagen probablemente

The flowers in this decade with one exception are rendered in black and white but nevertheless are apprehended as in color. Dan speaks of the struggle that he had making that single color print. And although the colored print is lovely, the ones in black and white invent another Dan McCleary language for us: one where our eye projects the color. We see this in the earliest of them; in the crosshatching and minimal line of Goldenrod and later due to the magnificent introduction of aquatint.

A few along the way introduce wonderfully freer marks, less controlled than in the portraits of people. The latest flower works are all a product of an ever more daring use of aquatint, burin and sugarlift. They reveal an entirely other sensibility in Dan than that of the earlier, more purely etched images.

The last print in this series Mixed Flowers with Heather is like a recapitulation of everything Dan knows at this point about flower printmaking. The background is reminiscent of his portrait technique. With judiciously applied aquatint in the flower petals and stems and the bottom of the glass, the piece is luminous.

Notably, it is the background that is determinedly crosshatched; the petals themselves have parallel lines that enliven them and appear to sit on the aquatint, enlivening the composition more than in the purer aquatint images.

In the meantime, Dan has also been painting fruits and making related fruit prints. The earliest fruit prints are almost all composed of crosshatching and almost no line. They are followed by a strong combination of aquatint and other techniques. The background gets more variegated as well, and the appearance of line further enlivens the fruit pieces.

Dan is eager to return to Oaxaca and begin a new series of prints with Fernando Sandoval. He has no clear idea what that work will be. He will not truly know until he begins again. We can only wait to see the results as they take their place in McCleary’s powerful series of prints emanating from his two decades of printmaking in La Verde Antequera: Oaxaca, Mexico. ■Selma Holo

no habría sido generada en la calle 6 de Los Ángeles donde el arte es persistentemente actual y secular. Este Cristo funciona cabalmente como objeto religioso. No nos parece contemporáneo en el sentido usual de contemporáneo – desafiante y cuestionador – pero es contemporáneo en tanto ha sido creado por un artista vivo que creció en la iglesia. No es sorprendente que haya sido creado en una ciudad en la que ese sentimiento todavía persiste. He oído muchas veces decir que los mexicanos son más religiosos de lo que ellos creen, aún cuando sean menos religiosos de lo que nosotros creemos que son.

En 2006, cuando Dan estaba trabajando en el grabado de Cristo, estalló en Oaxaca un conflicto entre los maestros y el gobierno. Hubo movilizaciones civiles que continuaron por varios años. Dan no regresó hasta el 2010 cuando empezó otro intenso ciclo de producción gráfica dedicado casi totalmente a las flores. Alentado por Fernando Sandoval, también inició una serie de retratos en punta seca.

Salvo un grabado a color, las flores de esta década están creadas en blanco y negro pero se perciben polícromas. Dan cuenta lo difícil que fue hacer ese único grabado a color. Aunque ese grabado a color es hermoso, con los realizados en blanco y negro Dan inventa y nos regala un lenguaje nuevo. Uno en el que nuestros ojos proyectan el color. Esto lo vemos en el primero de la serie; en la entramada y mínima línea de Vara de Oro y más tarde, gracias a la magnífica introducción del aguatinta. Conforme se va desarrollando la serie, en algunos grabados aparecen trazos más libres, menos controlados que los que usaba en los retratos de personas. Los últimos trabajos dedicados a las flores muestran un uso todavía más audaz del aguatinta, el buril y el aguatinta al azúcar. Revelan toda otra sensibilidad en Dan, distinta a la de los grabados de incisiones más puras de los comienzos.

El último grabado de esta serie Flores Variadas con Brezo es como una recapitulación de todo el conocimiento que Dan ha acumulado sobre los grabados de flores. El fondo recuerda la técnica de sus retratos. La sensata aplicación de aguatinta en los pétalos, los tallos y el fondo del vaso vuelve la pieza luminosa.

Notablemente, es en el fondo donde se ha aplicado el entramado en forma decisiva; los mismos pétalos muestran líneas paralelas que los animan y parecen

posarse en el aguatinta animando la composición más que en las imágenes de aguatinta más pura.

Al mismo tiempo, Dan ha estado pintando frutas y haciendo grabados frutales.

Los primeros grabados de frutas están hechos casi en su totalidad de entramado, casi sin líneas. Los siguientes presentan una vigorosa combinación de aguatinta con otras técnicas. El fondo también se torna más jaspeado y la línea hace su aparición para animar aún más las obras frutales.

Interview with Dan McCleary

This interview focusing on Dan McCleary’s history of printmaking and his process was conducted by Maria Galicia, Education and Programs Coordinator at USC Fisher Museum of Art. Have you always made prints? If so, when and where?

The painter Mark Stock introduced me to printmaking in 1983. We worked together for a number of years at the print studio, St. Jives by the Sea in Venice. Mark had been a printer at Gemini G.E.L. A few years later, we worked together again at Magnolia Editions in Oakland, California. This is when I began making etchings using different techniques. The work I did with Mark and at Magnolia was the beginning of my printmaking practice where I learned the basics of etching.

What do you like most about printmaking or painting?

They are completely different disciplines. When I paint, it is a solitary activity.

The only social interaction is with the model. I enjoy working alone in the studio. Printmaking, on the other hand, is very collaborative. I work in collaboration with the printers and at times with other artists. I think most printmakers will tell you there is an incredible pleasure from pulling a print. I also love that the technique of etching has barely changed in 500 years. I can’t say I prefer one over the other.

How were you introduced to Fernando Sandoval?

I went in 1998 with my partner Tony to visit my friends James and Alexandra Brown, who had recently moved to Santo Domingo Tomaltapec outside of Oaxaca with their family. I returned the following year when Matthew Brown, James’s brother, took me to visit two print shops. One of them was Fernando Sandoval’s shop, Taller Sangfer. I enjoyed meeting Fernando and was impressed by the work

El pintor Mark Stock me mostró el proceso de hacer grabados en 1983. Trabajamos juntos por varios años en su estudio gráfico. Mark trabajó como impresor en el taller gráfico Gemini G.E.L. Años después trabajamos juntos otra vez en St. Jives by the Sea en Venice, California y en Magnolia Editions en Oakland, California. Fue entonces cuando comencé a hacer grabados usando diferentes técnicas. Disfruto de la soledad y autonomía cuando pinto. En resumen, no podría escoger entre estas dos disciplinas. ¿Cómo conociste a Fernando Sandoval?

Mi compañero Tony y yo fuimos a visitar a James y Alexandra Brown y su familia que, para ese tiempo, habían establecido residencia en el pueblo de

I saw by him and by the artists who worked with him including Francisco Toledo.

I made a date to return in the fall of 2000 which began my 20-year relationship with Fernando.

Why did you decide to make prints in Oaxaca and not in the United States?

I believe when you travel your mind works in a completely different way. Many people in Oaxaca don’t speak English and it forces me into a different mindset.

When I am there my sole focus is making prints. Also, Oaxaca is not a museum city that exists in the glory of yesterday. Oaxaca is alive right now as a cultural and artistic center. It has become more so over the 20 years I have been going there. It has become one of the centers of printmaking. It is the opposite of Los Angeles. You can do 50 things in one day and you can accomplish so much. It is a walking city.

How long does each print take to complete?

Most of them take three to four days to complete. I usually work on two or three prints at the same time. We work towards a final B.A.T. I try to finish all the prints in one trip. Only once did I have to return to work on one of the color flower prints.

For those who don’t understand printmaking, can you explain the process?

What is B.A.T and what happens after the B.A.T ?

B.A.T is French. It is an abbreviation of bon à tirer. It is the final state of the work on the plate. It may be preceded by up to 20 states before I am satisfied. Once I am pleased with the results, it gives the printer permission to print the rest of the edition. The printer has to match the rest of the editions close to that one B.A.T. that was approved by me.

Why did you want to start your first project with the skull series?

I had done a series of paintings based on sugar skulls from Oaxaca. The paintings and prints were for me a meditation on death. It felt like a good project for Oaxaca because that’s where the skulls were from.

On my first trip to Oaxaca, I brought with me a book of the complete etchings of Giorgio Morandi. He only used pure lines in his prints and I wanted to do the same. On the third skull, Fernando suggested I use aquatint. It is a process of

Cuando estoy allá mi única actividad es hacer grabados. Además, Oaxaca es una ciudad viviente con energía y cultura. En los veinte años que llevo visitando se ha destacado mundialmente como uno de los centros de grabados más importantes. Oaxaca, al opuesto de Los Ángeles, es una ciudad compacta y puedes lograr 50 cosas en un día y lograrlo. Es una ciudad para caminantes. ¿Qué tiempo toma cada grabado en completarse?

Por general trabajo en dos o tres grabados a la vez. Dedico de 6 a 8 horas al día tomando tres o cuatro días en completar las obras hasta la etapa conocida como B.A.T. Trato de terminar todos los grabados durante mi viaje que, por general, es de 7 a 10 días. Solamente en una ocasión regresé a Los Ángeles dejando obras inconclusas y tuve que regresar a Oaxaca para finalizar unos grabados de flores que incorporaban tintas de color.

Para quienes que no están familiarizados con el proceso del grabado, ¿puede explicar el proceso? ¿Qué es B.A.T y qué sucede después de B.A.T? El grabado consiste en rayar, abrir, morder una placa rígida directamente con instrumentos agudos o por el uso de ingredientes químicos. Dejando un diseño que luego se entinta y se imprime. B.A.T. es un término francés. Una abreviación

adding tone to the print. It can range from light grey to dense black. I resisted at first but once I gave in and saw the amazing results I continued to use it with his guidance in the last three skull prints.

Tell me about the Masculine and Feminine series.

In 2004, I received a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs to go to Oaxaca for a month to work on this series of 16 prints based on a meditation on Masculinity and Femininity. I did not begin this series with anything more complex than that I wanted to do prints of men and of women. Any real analysis of why I wanted to do this and what resulted from it were not concerns.

Fabiola, Man Tying Tie, Alice, The Chef, Man Stirring Coffee, Alexandra, Man on Cell Phone, Woman Putting on Makeup, Sauna and Buddha, are all part of this series. This is when I seriously explored different etching techniques. Fernando taught me how to do sugarlift, drypoint, spit bite, and other printing methods. I knew before leaving that I wanted to make Man Tying Tie and The Chef. Other ideas came to me once I was back in Oaxaca working in the shop.

I want to talk more about Sauna, Man Stirring Coffee, Man on Cell Phone, Woman Putting on Makeup, and Man Tying Tie, because they are composed like your paintings.

Most of these were based on drawings and paintings I did in the studio. I used the paintings as a jumping off point for the prints. For Man on Cell Phone, however, I did an etching first and when I returned to LA I did a painting of it. Woman Putting on Makeup only exists as a print.

Let’s talk about the Sauna print. I think it’s the only nude piece I have seen of yours and find it interesting that you added half of the man’s body.

I never paint nudes. I am more interested in what I see in everyday life. However, I still did a drawing of a nude figure set in a sauna. The legs and feet on the left are based on the same model. That is the continuation of his body. The two men complete the whole person. It is important to me, in certain works, to know who you are as the viewer. In this piece, you are in a sauna. The idea came from Manet’s painting Bar at the Folies Bergère. In the painting, the woman’s legs are

El maestro impresor utiliza el BAT como punto de referencia para toda la tirada y deberá mantener completa fidelidad de apariencia al BAT hasta completar la edición. ¿Por qué quisiste comenzar tu primer proyecto con la serie de calaveras?

Mis viajes a Oaxaca me sirven de inspiración. Fue en unos de ellos que adquirí una calavera de azúcar, aquellas que son utilizadas para adornar los altares en el día de los muertos. Hice una serie de pinturas basadas en dichas calaveras, como meditación sobre la muerte, y quise continuar explorando ese tema en los grabados. El proyecto de las calaveras es mi manera de formalizar parte de mis experiencias en Oaxaca.

En ese primer viaje a Oaxaca, llevé conmigo un libro de los grabados de el artista Italiano Giorgio Morandi que me sirvió de motivación e inspiración para explorar el grabado en colaboración con Fernando Sandoval. En mi tercera calavera Fernando sugirió el uso de la técnica de “aguatinta”, que es el proceso de añadir variedad de tonos al grabado. Inicialmente me resistí a la idea pero luego accedí. Los resultados me dejaron asombrado y continué usando la técnica con Fernando como guía maestro.

Cuéntame sobre la serie de grabados “Masculino y Femenina”.

En el 2004, recibí una beca de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, para ir a Oaxaca por un mes y trabajar en esta serie de 16 grabados basados en una meditación sobre la Masculinidad y la Feminidad. Con esta serie quería hacer grabados de hombres y mujeres para explorar y expandir mis conocimientos del proceso del grabado. Así de sencillo. Fabiola, Man Tying Tie, Alice, The Chef, Man Stirring Coffee, Alexandra, Man on Cell Phone, Woman Putting On Make Up, Sauna y Buddha, son parte de esta serie. Con la colaboración de Fernando lograr realizar mi meta. Fernando me enseñó cómo hacer aguatinta al azúcar, punta seca, spit bite, y otros métodos. Supe antes de partir que quería hacer Man Tying Tie y The Chef. Las otras ideas me vinieron durante mi estadía en Oaxaca.

hidden by the bar. On the upper left are the legs of a performer. This can be seen as the continuation of the bartender.

I respond the most to the Jesús print. The line in that particular piece stands out from the rest.

The model was Jesús Villafán. At the time he was a printer in the shop. He now runs a gallery in Oaxaca. I told Fernando that I wanted a really thick, dense line, and I was never able to achieve this with other printmakers. He had the idea of leaving the plate in acid overnight. That is when I realized his complete mastery of etching.

Why did you want to do a portrait of Christ?

I wanted to do a print of the painting of Veronica’s Veil by Correggio which is at the Getty. I knew that if I did it here people would ask too many questions. I knew if I did it in Oaxaca no one would question me. Two years previously, when I did the Buddha print, Jesús Villafán asked me why I didn’t do a portrait of Christ. I realized it was something I wanted to do. Also, growing up Catholic, the earliest images of Christ I remember were at church, my home, and my grandparents’ home. The image is also based on Veronica’s Veil. The veil to me has always been a symbol of art-making. It’s a miraculous appearance on a piece of cloth.

Printmaking is similar. The final image appears in stages. I did it in 2006 when the large teacher strike happened. Two days after I was in Oaxaca, the city erupted in a conflict between the teachers and the police. The first day we were sent home. On the second day we were allowed to work. At the shop everyone was focused on the print of Christ. This time they used good quality paper on the proofs and worked with care on each state of the print.

I can tell you were inspired by Manet’s paintings when I see your still lifes of flowers. Which artist influenced you to create the etchings?

Manet’s late flower paintings have inspired many of the flower paintings I have done for years. I find it interesting that the last work he did were these intimate and delicate paintings. My flower prints are based on my flower paintings.

Morandi was also a significant influence on the flower prints. I still take his

Hablemos del grabado Sauna, creo que es el único desnudo que he visto tuyo y me parece interesante que hayas agregado la mitad del cuerpo del hombre.

Yo nunca pinto desnudos. Me interesa lo que veo en la vida diaria. Sin embargo, hice un dibujo de un cuerpo desnudo en el sauna. En esta pieza, el espectador se encuentra en un sauna. La idea está basada en la pintura de Manet “Bar at the Folies Bergère”. En esa pintura, las piernas de la mujer están ocultas en el bar. En la esquina superior izquierda están las piernas de una artista. Esto se puede ver como la continuación del cuerpo de la camarera. En mi grabado del Sauna, las piernas y los pies a la izquierda del grabado están basados en el mismo modelo.

Me interesaba desarrollar un grabado donde la línea fuese gruesa y densa, cosa que nunca había logrado con otros maestros, él sugirió dejar la placa en el ácido de un día para otro. El resultado fue genial. ¿Por qué quisiste hacer un retrato de Cristo?

Yo crecí católico y era muy común en mi infancia ver imágenes del Cristo tanto

book with me each time I go to Oaxaca. He had a theory in which he only did line etchings, because he believed that the line gives off color. The ink sits on top of the paper which gives different shades of color. I never quite understood that theory, but I thought I would try it.

The flower paintings are largely about color and composition. I started off doing a series of flower etchings in black and white using the Morandi theory.

Acacias and Snowberries were done with pure etching lines, but then I broke the rule. Mixed Flowers began as a complete disaster. It started with aquatint and it looked terrible; I had left it in the acid for too long. Then Fernando taught me the technique of burnishing, so I burnished the entire etching. That piece is the result of Fernando’s guidance.

Which print was the most challenging one? Why was it complex?

Lilacs was the most complex print because it was the first time I used color. I think it came out well, but I doubt if I will do color again. This one, I just wasn’t letting it go. It was very taxing, both for me and the printers, to get it right. We used three different plates that had to be registered properly which made it challenging. I prefer working on etchings in black and white How do you know which technique to use for each of your prints? Does Fernando tell you which technique works best?

It is a little of both. Initially, he would tell me what method to use. Now, he doesn’t really tell me much. I am on my own. I think after 20 years of working together he trusts me to figure it out. I still defer to him when I need his counsel.

What are you working on now?

For the past year, I have been focusing on still lifes of fruit. I am painting them and when I go to Oaxaca again, I want to make etchings of them. I also would like to try doing larger, more ambitious prints. I don’t have a clear idea what they would look like yet but I look forward to doing them. ■

en la iglesia como en casa de mis padres y de mis abuelos. El Velo de la Verónica, por el artista Correggio (Antonio Allegri) (Italian, aproximadamente 1489 - 1534) que es parte de la colección del Getty Center, Los Ángeles es una pintura que siempre me ha atraído y quería desarrollar un grabado basado en dicha imagen.

El Velo de la Verónica para mí siempre ha sido un símbolo de la creación artística.

Es una aparición milagrosa en un pedazo de tela. El proceso y la imagen final del grabado igualmente nos revelà una imagen sobre el papel. Los temas religiosos son parte de la cultura Oaxaqueña y por consecuencia me permitió trabajar en este tema con total libertad. Esta obra la realizamos en Oaxaca en el 2006 durante el conflicto de maestros y policías. El primer día el taller se cerró y nos regresamos a casa. Fue en el segundo día que pudimos enfocarnos en el proyecto usando papeles de buena calidad y que permitieron que la imagen apareciera gradualmente. Aquí en los Estados Unidos el uso de la imagen de Correggio como punto de partida para mi obra hubiera requerido una explicación prevista. ¿Qué artista te influyó para crear tus grabados? ¿Puedo inferir que tu naturaleza muerta de flores está inspirada en las obras de Manet?

Si, Manet está entre los artistas que estudio y analizo. Sus últimas obras de flores son intimas y muy delicadas. Esas pinturas de Manet me han servido de inspiración para las pinturas y grabados de flores que he hecho en estos años. El otro artista que ha jugado un papel importante para mí es Giorgio Morandi. Todavía llevo su libro de grabados conmigo cada vez que voy a Oaxaca. Morandi tenía una teoría que solo hacía grabados lineales, porque creía que la línea en el grabado emitía color. La tinta está en la parte superior del papel, lo que da diferentes tonos de color. Nunca entendí esa teoría, pero pensé que la trataría. Técnicamente, Lilacs fue la impresión más compleja porque fue la primera vez que usé color. En este grabado no encontrábamos la manera de realizar lo que deseábamos. Por lo tanto, esta obra fue difícil, tanto para mí como para los grabadores. Llegamos a usar hasta tres placas diferentes que tuvieron que ser registrada con exactitud, lo que complicó el proceso. Creo que al final salió bien, pero dudo que volveré a usar color otra vez. ¿Cómo sabes qué técnica usar para cada uno de tus grabados? ¿Te dice Fernando qué técnica funciona mejor?

Vuelvo a mencionar la importancia que juega el Maestro impresor como guía que sabe cuándo intervenir y cuándo apoyar. En un principio la decisión era un poco de ambos. Inicialmente, me decía qué método usar para realizar lo que deseaba.

Ahora, realmente no me dice mucho. Voy por mi cuenta. Creo que después de 20 años de trabajar juntos, confía en mí para resolverlo. Todavía acudo con preguntas cuando necesito sus consejos y conocimientos. ¿En qué trabajas ahora?

El año pasado, me he centrado en naturalezas muertas de frutas. Las pinto y cuando voy al taller en Oaxaca otra vez las re-interpreto y las realizo en formas de grabados. También me gustaría tratar de hacer grabados más grandes y técnicamente ambiciosos. Todavía no tengo una idea clara de cómo serían, pero espero poder hacerlo muy pronto. ■

I arrived in Oaxaca in 2004 to work on the Masculine/ Feminine series of prints. James hd Brown and Alexandra Brown had begun Carpe Diem Press in Oaxaca. They asked me to make a book of prints with the writer, Nora Cain. The result was “Untitled”. It consists of eight etchings and the poem Forgiveness/ Perdon by Nora Cain.

Llegué a Oaxaca en el 2004 para trabajar en una serie de grabados sobre el tema de Masculino/ Femenino. James hd Brown y Alexandra Brown habían establecido Carpe Diem Press en Oaxaca y me invitaron a colaborar en un libro con la escritora Nora Cain. Interview with Fernando Sandoval

This interview was conducted by Maria Galicia, Education and Programs Coordinator at USC Fisher Museum of Art. I heard much about you through Dan—your shop and the wonderful work you have done with artists. How did you get involved in etching?

It started at Cedart, an art school in Guadalajara. At the same time, I was working at other etching studios where I was a printer. Eventually I wanted to leave Guadalajara and go to Oaxaca to work with painter Javier Arevalo and work on some etchings. I liked Oaxaca and wanted to stay and establish my own etching studio. I worked with many Oaxacan artists and little by little I gained experience.

Until this day I have my workshop in Oaxaca.

Oaxaca is currently known to be the center of etching. Why do you believe that is so?

Oaxaca has had a very important influx of religious imagery from the beginning of colonial times. Through time it has been preserved as part of the cultural heritage. It is curious but when I arrived inthe city of Oaxaca there were few etching studios. There were institutes such as Bellas Artes, Taller Rufino Tamayo, and also a private one belonging to JuanAlcázar. I founded my own studio in 1988.

During the 1980s there was a large interest in etchings by Oaxacan artists. In time Oaxaca’s political history allowed other etching shops to emerge. In that climate graphic pamphlets were used as political manisfestos in the streets. In 2006 a social-political movement emerged. It derived from the teachers’ strike and the consolidation of APPO. The conflicts that developed over months provoked more collective workshops to emerge. They were able to manifest their political point of view through graphics. One finds many etching workshops in Oaxaca today as a result of that wave of work. During the intense social struggle of the time (2006), Dan McCleary was working in the studio with us.

Esta entrevista fue realizada por Maria Galicia, Education and Programs Coodinator at USC Fisher Museum of Art. He oído mucho sobre tí a través de Dan. El taller y el increíble trabajo que haces con los artistas. ¿Cómo te interesaste en el grabado?

Bueno, el grabado comenzó en la escuela de arte en Guadalajara, “Cedart” al tiempo que trabajaba en algunos talleres de grabado donde era impresor. Con el tiempo quise salir de Guadalajara e ir a Oaxaca a trabajar con el pintor Javier Arévalo para hacer unos grabados. Después me gustó Oaxaca y quise quedarme e instalar mi propio taller de grabado donde trabajé con muchos pintores Oaxaqueños y poco a poco fui tomando experiencia y hasta la fecha sigo con el taller en Oaxaca.

Oaxaca es conocido por ser el corazón del grabado, ¿por qué crees que es así?

Oaxaca tuvo una influencia muy importante en estampas religiosas desde principios de la colonia que a través del tiempo se han ido conservando como patrimonio cultural por ser parte del conocimiento y enseñanza colectiva.

Es curioso pero cuando llegué a la ciudad de Oaxaca había pocos talleres de grabado, dos institucionales como el de Bellas Artes y el taller Rufino Tamayo, y uno particular que era el de Juan Alcazar y con el tiempo se fundó el mío, estoy hablando de los años 80 donde ya había un gran interés por el grabado de parte de los artistas oaxaqueños. La fundación de mi taller surgió en el año 1988 y a través del tiempo la historia política de Oaxaca hizo que surgieran varios talleres y se recurrió a panfletos gráficos como manifiesto en las calles. En el año 2006 surge un movimiento político-social derivado de la lucha magisterial y la consolidación de la Asamblea popular de los pueblos de Oaxaca APPO. Todos los conflictos que se desarrollaron durante meses provocó que surgieran más talleres

Can you explain what is APPO for those who do not know? I believe it is such an important story in Oaxaca that really stirred artists to create work.

It means ‘Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca’ (Popular Assembly of Peoples of Oaxaca), an organization that came out in support of section 22 teachers union chapter who suffered after the eviction attempt at the city’s zócalo in June 2006. It provoked many people to join the teachers’ fight. Associations, students, people in general joined to try to overthrow the government of state governor for different anomalies in his government. After the repression, the strike was extended for many months with much social chaos, barricades, blockages, mega marches, leaders’ assassinations, etc. This wave of violence unleashed the need of many young artists to interpret what they were living through. It was a very difficult year for Oaxaca in all aspects.

What inspired you to open your own workshop?

It was a hard decision because I needed to have a job, a way to make a living. At the beginning I wanted to do my own work because etching is very exciting. I like experimenting with different techniques, etc. I had to decide between working on my own work or those of others. Finally due to economic matters I decided to prioritize other artists’ work.

Who are some of the artists with whom you have worked?

Oaxacan artists such as Maximino Javier, Arnulfo Mendoza, Rodolfo Morales, Eddie Martínez, Emiliano Lopéz, Fernando Olivera, Francisco Toledo, Dr. Lakra, Sergio Hernandez, Ale España, among many others; and foreigners such as James hd Brown, Francesco Clemente, Kiki Smith, Holton Rower, George Mead Moore, Mario Benedetti, Toño Camuñas, Ramon San Miguel, Dan McCleary and Emily Winter.

You have worked with the legendary Francisco Toledo. How was that?

It was a very special experience because he was a gentleman who was fascinated by etchings. Watching how he worked filled me with wisdom. He was very studious. In each etching there was a lot of information, a lot of literature, While expressing it, besides his virtuosity in sketching, it was delightful all the information he possessed and shared. He worked on an etching plate like no one

colectivos que manifestaron su punto de vista político mediante la gráfica y tal es el punto al que llegó esa ola de trabajo que ahora en Oaxaca se pueden encontrar gran cantidad de talleres de grabado. Debo manifestar que en plena lucha social de esa época (2006) Dan McCleary estuvo trabajando en el taller. ¿Puedes explicar qué es APPO para aquellos que no saben? Creo que es una historia tan importante en Oaxaca que realmente conmovió a los artistas al crear obras.

Significa Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca, una organización que surgió en apoyo a los maestros de la sección XX de Oaxaca que sufrieron durante del intento de desalojo del zócalo de la ciudad en Junio del 2006. Lo cual provocó que mucha gente se uniera a la lucha magisterial, asociaciones, estudiantes, gente en general se unieron para intentar derrocar el gobierno del entonces gobernador del estado por diferentes anomalías en su gobierno. Después de la represión la huelga se extendió a lo largo de varios meses con mucho caos social, barricadas, bloqueos, mega marchas, asesinatos a líderes etc. Fue un año muy difícil para Oaxaca en todos los aspectos. Esta ola de violencia desató la necesidad de muchos jóvenes artistas a interpretar lo que estaban viviendo. Fue un año muy difícil para Oaxaca en todos los aspectos. ¿Qué te inspiró a abrir tu propio taller?

La decisión fue dura porque yo necesitaba tener un empleo y por lo tanto una forma de vida. Al inicio quería hacer mis propios trabajos porque el grabado es muy apasionante, me gusta mucho la experimentación de diferentes técnicas etc, pero al abrir mi propio taller tuve que decidir entre trabajar mi obra o trabajar en las de los otros. Finalmente por cuestiones económicas decidí dar prioridad al trabajo de otros artistas. ¿Quiénes son algunos de los artistas con los que has trabajado?

Artistas de Oaxaca como Maximino Javier, Arnulfo Mendoza, Rodolfo Morales, Eddie Martínez, Emiliano Lopéz, Fernando Olivera, Francisco Toledo, Dr. Lakra, Sergio Hernandez, Ale España, entre otros y extranjeros como James hd Brown, Francesco Clemente, Kiki Smit, Rowel Holton, Mario Benedetti, Toño Camuñas,

else. He liked trying new tools, and to obtain new textures on the metal, which was an adventure. He never knew if he would like the end result. If he did not he would erase complete sketches and replace them with others. In the end, he was a great artist.

What type of etching techniques are used in your workshop?

We use traditional techniques such as etching, aquatint, dry point, sugarlift, direct acid, manera negra, color etching, monotype, and xilography.

What do you like most about etching?

I like the process of the plate, and seeing the result of each proof, until you reach the final proof, which is the bon à tirer or ready to print.

Is it difficult to work with an artist to try to accomplish his/her vision?

Yes, it is difficult, but it is all a matter of knowing their personality to know what they want or try to interpret what they want in technical matters for their work.

How do you feel when the artist finally approves the ‘artist proof’?

After having worked on the plate and doing the corresponding proofs, we refine the details and continue until the artist considers the etching complete. It is very satisfying when the results are good and it is ready to print.

Can you describe the first time you met Dan McCleary and how has it been working with him?

The first time I worked with Dan McCleary it was very curious because not only did he not speak Spanish, I did not speak English. We were introduced

by Matthew Brown in 1999. Dan is very disciplined. We did not need spoken language to work. Technique was our language. Our communication was the etchings. He is very expressive, affectionate and sensitive. It is not so difficult to know what he wants and how he perceives it. I believe the results of his work at the workshop have been good since the beginning. That to me is very gratifying.

Through time we have had a very beautiful friendship. Little by little he has learned to speak Spanish. Our work experience and friendship has strengthened over the years. He also contributes much to the workshop with his desire, his consistency and great energy. ■

Has trabajado con el legendario Francisco Toledo, ¿cómo fue eso?

Pues una experiencia muy especial porque era un señor al que le fascinaba la gráfica y estar viendo cómo trabajaba me llenaba de sabiduría. Era muy estudioso, en cada grabado estaba involucrada mucha información, mucha literatura, que al contarla además de su virtuosidad en el dibujo era un deleite la información que poseía y compartía. Además trabajaba sobre la placa como ninguno, le gustaba probar nuevas herramientas y obtener nuevas texturas sobre el metal, lo cual era una aventura, nunca se sabía si le gustaría el resultado.

Pues de lo contrario barría con dibujos enteros y los suplía por otros, en fin, era un gran artista. ¿Qué tipo de técnicas de grabado se realizan en su taller?

Técnicas tradicionales como aguafuerte, agua tinta, punta seca, azúcar, ácido directo, manera negra, grabado a color, monotipo, xilografía. ¿Qué es lo que te gusta más del grabado?

El proceso de la placa, y ver el resultado de cada prueba, hasta llegar a la prueba final que es la bon-a-tirer o lista para tiraje. ¿Es difícil trabajar con un artista para tratar de lograr su visión?

Si, es difícil, pero todo es cuestión de conocer su personalidad para saber que quiere o tratar de interpretar lo que quiere en cuestión técnica para su trabajo. ¿Cómo te sientes cuando el/la artista finalmente aprueba la “prueba de artista”?

Después de haber trabajado la placa y hacer las pruebas correspondientes, pulir detalles y continuar hasta que el artista considera que tiene el grabado terminado.

Es muy satisfactorio cuando el trabajo ha resultado bueno y está listo para el tiraje. ¿Puedes describir cuando conociste a Dan McCleary y cómo has estado trabajando con él?

La primera vez que trabajé con Dan fue muy curioso porque tanto él no hablaba

español como yo no hablaba inglés, nos presentó Matthew Brown, pero Dan es una persona muy disciplinada, no se necesitaba el lenguaje hablado para poder trabajar. Nuestro idioma fue la técnica, nuestra comunicación el grabado, además, él realmente es muy expresivo, cariñoso y sensitivo, entonces no es tan difícil saber lo que quiere y cómo lo percibe. Creo que los resultados de su trabajo en el taller le han sido satisfactorios desde el principio y eso para mí es gratificante, muy agradable. A través del tiempo hemos tenido una amistad muy bonita, él poco a poco aprendió a hablar español y entonces la experiencia en el trabajo y amistad se ha fortalecido y también aporta mucho aprendizaje al taller con sus ganas, su constancia y gran energía. ■

A Second Home Called Oaxaca

I met Dan through the project “Montar la Bestia” by artist Demián Flores, which was presented at the USC Fisher Museum in 2017. Since then, we have collaborated with the two independent non-profit cultural spaces that each artist directs in their own country: Art Division located in Los Angeles and La Curtiduría in Oaxaca. Both centers, with similar objectives, work with young adults through education and artistic projects. They were created by visual artists Dan McCleary and Demián Flores, under the inspiration and teaching of ‘maestro’ Francisco Toledo, who founded numerous institutions that brought art and culture to the residents and visitors of Oaxaca at no cost; among them, the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca: a space that houses and protects numerous and important collection of prints that Toledo put together throughout his life and is now part of the cultural heritage of Mexico.

Oaxaca, one of the Mexican states with the greatest ethnic and cultural diversity, enjoys a very long history of artisans and art. The Zapotec and Mixtec cultures, in particular, are recognized for their creative mastery since prehistoric times; these are cultures that over centuries have maintained their own creative traditions but also adopted new techniques, materials, and influence from artists from other cultures with great success. Likewise, Oaxaca has not only been the cradle of great painters—the most prominent being Rufino Tamayo—its landscapes and indigenous towns have been a source of inspiration for great photographers like Graciela Iturbide and painters like Diego Rivera.

2006 was a critical year for Oaxacan society and art, starting with the conflict of the teachers who demanded better conditions in the schools and whose demands shook the Mexican state generating a wave of extreme violence; forced disappearances; police repression; and repression by the military against the civil population, social organizations, and schoolteachers. In that context, Demián

Un Segundo Hogar Llamado Oaxaca

Conocí a Dan a través del proyecto del maestro Demián Flores, “Montar la Bestia”, que se presentó en USC Fisher Museum en 2017. Desde entonces, hemos realizado colaboraciones a partir de los dos espacios culturales independientes y sin fines de lucro, que cada uno dirige en su país: Art Division ubicado en Los Ángeles y La Curtiduría en la Ciudad de Oaxaca. Ambos centros, a fines en sus objetivos, trabajan con jóvenes a partir de proyectos educativos y artísticos. Fueron creados por artistas visuales, Dan McCleary y Demián Flores, bajo la inspiración y enseñanza de las iniciativas del maestro Francisco Toledo, quien fundó numerosas instituciones que han acercado el arte y la cultura a los habitantes y visitantes de Oaxaca de manera gratuita; entre ellos, el Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca, espacio que resguarda la numerosa e importante colección de estampas que Toledo juntó a lo largo de su vida y que ahora forma parte del patrimonio cultural de México.

Oaxaca, uno de los estados mexicanos con mayor diversidad étnica y cultural, goza de una muy larga trayectoria artesanal y artística. Las culturas zapoteca y mixteca en particular, son reconocidas por su maestría creativa desde tiempos prehispánicos; son culturas que a los largo de lo siglos han mantenido sus propias tradiciones creativas pero también han adaptado nuevas técnicas, materiales y ramas artesanales foráneas, con gran éxito. Asimismo, Oaxaca no sólo ha sido cuna de grandes artistas plásticos—siendo Rufino Tamayo el más destacado— sus paisajes y pueblos indígenas han sido la fuente de inspiración de grandes fotógrafos como Graciela Iturbide o pintores como Diego Rivera.

El año 2006, fue parteaguas para la sociedad y el arte oaxaqueño a partir del conflicto de los maestros de educación básica que reclamaban mejores condiciones en las escuelas, y cuyas férreas demandas cimbraron al estado mexicano, generando una ola de extrema violencia, desapariciones forzadas y represión

Flores opened his workshop—located in an old tannery at Barrio de Jalatlaco— as a space for resistance and social unity from which the art community, as a collective, generated protest and called the public to support the demands of the professors and against the coercion of the state.

This place—now known as La Curtiduría—over the years consolidated itself as a center of dialogue, participation, exchange, education, and contemporary artistic production that triggered the rise of graphics as a vehicle of expression or communication for youth as well as the creation of collectives and the opening of production workshops in the city. This artistic explosion is also a reminder of Taller de Gráfica Popular, a collective that emerged in the 1930s in Mexico, whose main objective was that work reached the common man through the reproduction of prints and would inspire them to take part in the struggle against the injustice to laborers and farmworkers.

Graphic art is per se a collective artistic practice that is learned by trade, by practice, and above all the master and apprentice principle. It is not surprising for this discipline to be so prolific in a state like Oaxaca, whose deepest cultural traditions come from their indigenous identities and community customs, among them, “give and receive”, that is to say, the reciprocity between individuals and their hometowns. Nor is it surprising that young people opt for a trade that seems close to an artisanal practice because of its serialized production. Finally, it is the young who have successfully combined tradition and contemporary art practices in order to experiment and to propose new languages or visual solutions from the graphic arts.

Dan is passionate about Oaxaca. It is practically his second home. His artwork, both painting and graphics, recall Oaxacan mornings of extremely bright sun and cloudless skies, colored deep blue, in that light so radiant that it subtly fades the colors and allows us to observe the particles that levitate in the air. His images seem suspended in time, and yet they do not lose the vitality of what is represented, be they portraits or still lifes.

It could be said that his work, beyond the apparent lightness, has an almost tactile quality that breaks the sensation of two-dimensionality, and that for a

En ese contexto, Demián Flores abrió su taller—ubicado en una antigua curtiduria del Barrio de Jalatlaco—como un espacio de resistencia y unidad social, desde el cual la comunidad artística, en colectivo, generó protestas y llamados públicos en apoyo a las demandas de los profesores y en contra de la coerción del estado.

Este lugar—ahora conocido como La Curtiduría—con los años se consolidó como una sede de diálogo, participación, intercambio, educación y producción artística contemporánea, que detonó el auge de la gráfica como vehículo de expresión o comunicación para los jóvenes, así como la creación de colectivos y apertura de talleres de producción en la ciudad. Auge artístico que también recuerda al Taller de Gráfica Popular, surgido en los años treinta del siglo XX en México, cuyo objetivo principal era que la obra, a través de la reproducibilidad de la estampa, llegara al hombre común y lo inspirara a formar parte de la lucha contra las injusticias sobre los sectores obreros y campesinos.

El arte gráfico es per se una práctica artística colectiva que se aprende de oficio, del ejercicio y sobre todo de la enseñanza maestro-aprendiz. No es raro que esta disciplina sea tan prolífica en un estado como Oaxaca, cuyas tradiciones culturales más profundas, provienen de las identidades indígenas y sus costumbres comunitarias, entre ellas, el “dar y recibir”, es decir, la reciprocidad entre particulares y hacia el pueblo al que un individuo pertenece. Tampoco es extraño que los jóvenes se decanten por un oficio que se antoja cercano a la práctica artesanal a través de su producción material en cadena y su cualidad múltiple. Finalmente son los jóvenes quienes han logrado unir tradiciones y prácticas artísticas contemporáneas, experimentar y proponer nuevos lenguajes o soluciones visuales desde las artes gráficas.

Dan es un apasionado de Oaxaca, es prácticamente su segundo hogar.

Su obra plástica, tanto la pintura como la gráfica, recuerdan las mañanas oaxaqueñas de sol extremadamente brillante y cielos sin nubes, coloreados de azul profundo; a esa luz tan radiante que deslava sútilmente los colores y que permite observar las partículas que levitan en el aire. Sus imágenes

moment, allows the viewer to integrate into the composition and become part of the scene. His work celebrates memory and affection and, above all, refers to Dan’s generosity and the ties of family and friendship that he has built with many of us who are fortunate to know him. â–

parecen suspendidas en el tiempo, y sin embargo, no pierden la vitalidad de lo representado, ya sean retratos o naturalezas muertas. Se podría decir que su obra, más allá de la aparente liviandad, posee una cualidad casi táctil que rompe la sensación de bidimensionalidad, y que por un momento, permite al espectador integrarse en la composición y formar parte de la escena. Su obra celebra la memoria, el recuerdo, el cariño y sobretodo, remite a la generosidad de Dan y los lazos familiares y de amistad que ha construído con muchos de los que hemos tenido la fortuna de conocerlo. ■

Dan McCleary is an artist and the director of Art Division, an organization located in The MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. This is also where he lives and has a studio.

He travels to Oaxaca, Mexico often to make etchings at the Taller Sangfer.

He is represented by Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica, California and the Texas Gallery in Houston.

His prints can be found at USC Fisher Museum of Art, The Hammer and LACMA in Los Angeles and at the New York Public Library.

Dan McCleary es un artista y director de Art Division, una organización ubicada en el barrio de MacArthur Park en Los Ángeles, California donde él reside y mantiene su taller. Él viaja con frecuencia a la ciudad de Oaxaca, México donde hace grabados en el Taller del maestro Fernando Sandoval.
