TEAM UTS Athletics Div 1 Nationals

INTERVARSITY IN 2018 NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS The introduction of a new intervarsity structure in 2018 saw the former Eastern and Australian University Games become the National University Championships in a bid to create a more high performance competition — and that it did. The year kicked off with UTS Sport hosting several of our own intervarsity competitions for universities in the Eastern region. These competitions served as an opportunity for students who may not otherwise have had a chance to represent their home institution, and for teams to have a hit out before the National Championships. UTS hosted the NSW Men’s and Women’s 3x3 Basketball Championships, the UTS 5s Netball Championships, and the Intervarsity Bay Run. UTS claimed 1st at 3 out of 4 of these events; a great stepping stone on the way to Nationals.

GOLD MEDALS WERE WON The main event on the intervarsity calendar was the Division 1 National University Championships where each team was trying to win the pennant (gold) for their university. Held on the Gold Coast, Team UTS battled it out against the top 10 universities in each sport, fighting for a grand final berth on the final day of competition. A new Nationals structure meant no team knew what to expect from the competition, other than it would be fierce. Team UTS rose to the challenge, with a record number of teams finishing in the top 4 of competition by the end of the week. Gold medals were won by Women’s Golf, our Open's sailing team, and for the 2nd year in a row, our Men’s and Women’s Futsal teams came out on top. A large number of teams also won silver and bronze medals, helping UTS to place 7th overall.

A GREAT SHOWDOWN The UTS intervarsity year finished off in spectacular fashion at the National T20 Championships held right here in Sydney. The UTS team, made up of cricketers from a number of different clubs in Sydney’s grade cricket competition, continued to prove themselves as formidable opponents. A s the week progressed and the competition organisers looked for ways around the unfavourable weather conditions, UTS steadily progressed through their round games. It looked like they may be able to make it through to the big dance. It was down to the final 4, which was dominated by the Sydney-based universities, UNSW, MQU, USYD and UTS. UTS weren’t the favourites, however the team was able to topple UNSW in the semi-final, progressing to the final match where they would face MQU.

The final was set to be a great showdown with MQU having defeated the 2017 Champions, USYD, in their semi-final. In the end MQU were no match for UTS as they put on a great show with Rohit Pulla taking a hat-trick to help UTS to victory. TEAM UTS From the Gold Coast to the Snowy Mountains of Mt Buller, approximately 500 students represented Team UTS with pride and courage, competing in over 30 different sports. In 2019, Team UTS will again take on the National University Championships, looking to win some more gold medals. If you would like to be involved, keep an eye out for the details on our Facebook page, UTS Sport.

UTS TAEKWONDO CLUB TAEKWONDO ATHLETES The UTS Taekwondo Club has been established for over 20 years. As a club, we strive to create a friendly environment for all level Taekwondo athletes to develop and improve on their skills, fitness, confidence and discipline. Over the years, our club members have competed and seen success at local, state, national and international competitions like the Oceania Championship. Most recently in November 2018, both our players performed exceptionally well at the ATNSW State Competition, each taking home a gold medal. The Nationals Division 1 2018 team also placed 5th overall with 5 gold, 7 silvers and 3 bronze medals, with more than half the team competing in their first Taekwondo competition ever.

TRIAL CLASSES The UTS Taekwondo Club welcomes those of all belts, experience and backgrounds. Your first two lessons are on us, so make sure you try our classes! ENTER THE DOJO I WAS SELLING JIU-JITSU AND MYSELF This article shares the experience of opening a club in a new country, hopefully inspiring you to do the same despite the many obstacles you will face. Push forward, always. Three years ago, I was a brown belt and needed to teach to be eligible for my next belt. I had moved from London to Sydney, from 26 clubs in the London region alone to 1 club in Sydney (in the Blue Mountains). Before the big move I had already sent fifty or so emails to various places: gyms, schools, universities, community centres. I was selling Jiu-Jitsu and myself, a free instructor. Depressingly, I received little response. TEACHING AND TRAINING A couple of months after arriving, I started free lunch time sessions in the park with a few other jiu-jitsu expats, friends and colleagues. I continued my research but had very little luck.

10

UTS Sport Magazine // edition one

With the lack of clubs in my style to train in, I went and started to train in other arts/ combat sports, teaching and training on the mat a minimum of three times a week. This was tough with family life and a full-time job, but it got me to black belt level and the following year I came back to England for the grading. KARATE DOJO Eventually, I secured our first indoor location at a Karate dojo in the CBD and borrowed some mats from a fellow martial artist. The club was doing well, but the time slot was not popular as it was later at night. Two years in, we got a couple weeks’ notice that the dojo was moving. Not an easy choice, but we decided to move on. This new start could get us back on track in terms of growth, but it could also mean the end of the club.

THEN IT STRUCK ME Our mats went into storage and I found a new place to rent with permanent mats just in time, allowing classes to continue without a break. I knew the slot was available as it was just after judo classes I was training at. Training in other martial arts at different locations gave me invaluable contacts and insight. Unfortunately, with increased prices and commitment we lost half our students. With insufficient members, the lack of funding and a session time that was not ideal, we were stuck. Then it struck me, I was renting the space at a university, without being a club. I pulled out a 2-year old email thread, and just asked. I was put in touch with the manager of the UTS ActivateFit.Gym, He was very enthusiastic, and they had storage for our mats near the training room! We had to increase prices, but also add more sessions. Shortly after, I mentioned my interest in being a university club, and we started the process of affiliating just around O’Day (March 2017). We did not have an official stand for the biggest recruitment day of the year but could hang around the gym’s table. It meant we had exposure: plenty of flyers distributed and many emails collected. Recruitment started slowly, but we built up.

We reached a peak of 18 people on the mat & 25 paid memberships the first month after Clubs Day. We were able to get an extra grading in September with grading preparation, on top of the usual June and December gradings, meaning that our core of students were now orange belts. We had on average 1 extra Saturday session per month (3 hours), with special guest instructors. The old mats were sold and returned and we co-bought 100sqm of brand new competition grade tatamis with the new Judo club at UTS. Fast forward a year, August 2018. I did not even have to show up at Clubs Day, it was entirely handled by our members. We now have more than a handful of higher grades including the soon-to-be instructors and always have a busy mat. MANY THANKS Many thanks to all those who helped me on this journey, they know who they are. FRANCK ROYER, LEAD INSTRUCTOR OF UTS JITSU UTS Jitsu train on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:15pm – 8:00pm Discounts are available for UTS Students and Staff. For more information about the club email contact@utsjitsu.com.au For more information on starting a UTS Sports Club, contact Sam Colless in the UTS Sport Office – Samuel.Colless@uts.edu.au

We became affiliated, and this allowed membership fees to go back to a competitive range. KEEN NEWCOMERS August 2017, our first official Clubs Day, we had a core of keen newcomers who handled our dedicated stand. Unsurprisingly, young students were better at recruiting other students than two old French dudes.

2018 UTS BLUES SPORTING AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

HIGH LEVEL OF SUCCESS Each year, guests attending the UTS Blues Sporting Awards of Excellence are wowed by both the venue setup and the sporting achievements celebrated on the night. The 2018 awards were no different, with guests treated to a gallery-inspired theme showcasing an Elite Athlete Program photoshoot from earlier in the year by photographer Chris Lew. The 2018 theme also celebrated UTS’s three Commonwealth Games representatives and our Winter Paralympian. Most importantly, the evening celebrated the many wonderful sporting achievements of 2018 by UTS Elite Athletes, Sporting Clubs and their members, and Intervarsity Teams. While guests enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal from the Aerial UTS Function Centre, over 60 athletes and club members were recognised with various awards, starting with the Half and Full Sporting Blues. The Blues Awards are awarded to individuals who have reached a high level of success in their chosen sport and balanced this with their university studies. These athletes include state open representatives, national champions, international representatives and professional sportsmen and women. Following these presentations, each of the UTS sports clubs had the opportunity to recognize their club person of the year, before the perpetual awards were presented. The perpetual awards included Club of the Year, Team of the Year, Sports Manager of the Year, Sports Recognition Award and Service to Sport Award, which are awarded to club members with over 3 and 5 years of service respectively.

12

UTS Sport Magazine // edition one

The final awards of the evening were the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. Each award recognises an individual who has achieved success in the sporting field, in the classroom, and who has given back to the UTS Sport community. SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR In 2018, the Sportsman of the Year was Emmanuel Fakiye. Emmanuel had an impressive year of competition, kicking it off with being crowned the Australian National Champion in Triple Jump and qualifying to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games on home soil. The UTS Northern Suburbs Athletics Club member was the youngest competitor in the field and finished 15th in his first senior international competition. Emmanuel finished off the year by representing UTS at the Division 1 National University Championships where he won gold in Triple Jump. He did all of this whilst continuing his studies in Engineering. SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR The Sportswoman of the Year was presented to Water Polo player, Genevieve Longman. Gen is a goalkeeper and plays National League for the UTS Balmain Tigers and is a member of the Australian Women’s Water Polo squad, which saw her spend most of the year travelling internationally to play. In between all of this and her postgraduate studies in law, Gen not only played for UTS at the Division 1 National Championships, winning a silver medal, she also took on the responsibility of managing the team. Both Gen and Emmanuel are very deserving recipients of the prestigious Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year award.

2018 AWARD WINNERS 2018 was a fantastic year for our UTS Elite Athletes, Intervarsity teams and UTS Sports clubs. The UTS Sport community are looking forward to another successful year in 2019.

UTS GORDON RUGBY DARWIN’S BIG HOPE JOINS UTS GORDON SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2018 was a year of improvement for Gordon Rugby. The Colts teams (U21s) had a stellar year, with all 3 teams coming 2nd. 2019 will see a number of new recruits debut for the club, with one of them being Hone Edwards. Hone joined Gordon from Dar win via Newcastle. A utility back, Hone was recently selected in the Australian Uni Roos at the age of 19 - the same team Gordon & UTS flyer Brandon Quinn got his break into the Australian 7s squad. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HONE FOR A FEW QUICK QUESTIONS Q: WHAT ENCOURAGED YOU TO JOIN GORDON AND UTS? My reason for joining Gordon Rugby is the opportunity to play at a higher level and be a part of a program that is successful in developing my skill level. I joined UTS as a student because of the support they offer towards student athletes and how prestigious the universit y is.

UTS Sport Magazine // edition one

Q: WHAT COURSE ARE YOU STUDYING, AND WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS WITH YOUR RUGBY AND CAREER? The course I am studying is a Bachelor of Business. My long-term goal in rugby is to play at the highest level I possibly can and to continue developing my skills and leadership. My long-term goals are to just be happy with whichever pathway I end up in. Q: YOU RECENTLY REPRESENTED AUSTRALIAN UNIROOS AT THE NATIONAL 7S. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? The experience with the Australian Uni Roos was awesome because I gained experience in playing at a higher level. It was great to play against some of the best players in the country and learn from the experienced players in the team.
