Hi all, Welcome to the Spring Semester! I hope all of you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday period. The students of UTS got up to some pretty amazing things during the break. UTS won EUGs for the 3rd year out of 4, which is a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to the athletes and staff for doing us proud. We had students in all corners of Australia and the world at large doing volunteer work, taking part in courses around social entrepreneurship and microfinance, representing the university at law conferences and taking part in model United Nations events. I trust that this level of involvement will continue into the new semester! To those of you who are new to UTS, I welcome you and trust that you will find your time here enjoyable and rewarding. To new exchange, study abroad and international students, I hope that you find living in a new country and culture exciting and that you grasp every opportunity that living in Sydney has to offer. The semester ahead is shaping up to be a great one. As always, my message to you is simple: get involved, make the most of your time here, and always remember to seize the day. Why not join a club or society, try out a new sport, or simply come along to an event or party. Your time at UTS will be as good as you choose to make it! August 11 will see the official start of semester party here at UTS, with a massive line up of DJs. It is always a great event, so grab yourself a ticket and come along. Until next time, I wish you a really great start to the semester ahead, and I trust I will see you around campus! Laurence Wainwright {President, UTS Union}

Piper Serving up electro, house, tech and dubstep weekly as the sought after host of {Ministry of Sounds Radio Australia}, DJ Tom Piper is pushing the boundaries of dance music world wide! Placing #17 on the coveted {Sony In the Mix 50 DJ poll 2010}, Tom Piper is demanded by the biggest brands and DJs of the likes of Ministry of Sound, MixMash, Tiësto & David Guetta. With Tom headlining at our very own {Winter Wonderland O'fest} – you would be crazy to miss his fresh tunes!

What would you be doing if you weren't a DJ

Who has been the biggest influence on your career + why

Mmmm I dunno, I used to be a network engineer dude - bet ya didn’t know that - computers and stuff... maybe I’d do that haha... but yeah I’ve been doing music since school and would def be doing production or playing in bands etc etc I guess. Here’s another thing you prob don’t know - I can play bass guitar, flute, tenor sax (well alto too sorta) and the recorder.

I guess really peeps like prodigy, chemical brothers, daft punk, coldcut, shadow and all the guys that did that id&t hardcore action have been the biggest influence cause they are the ones that got me into the music I’m doing now. Also mad props to my parents and all the music teachers that pushed me through the ropes, cause that kept me at it I guess.

3 words to describe yourself Fresh, Fresher, Fresherist

Best/worst groupie story

What is your weirdest habit/pre-set ritual This is going to sound mad cliché but I love being fresh before I play... haha... I hate being out all day and then playing. I like rocking up to the club all mad showerfresh, new clothes, clean teeth blah blah. Who would be your dream DJ to play a set with + why Hahaha I dunno... Pass What has been your most memorable set + why Me and Tommy Trash once played to no-one at all, it was hilarious... I got a chair and sat in the middle of the room and had a private set by Tommy. Anyone else had that huh? Mmm haha... I wont forget that.

I don’t really have any amazing stories to think of, or ones that won’t get me in trouble. Timmy Trumpet has a mad one, ask him to tell you one day! > www.facebook.com/djtompiper > www.twitter.com/tompiperfresh > www.djtompiper.com

As a newcomer to the industry, DJ C (Justin Chong) is making his mark on the club scene. Justin has spun electro and dutch house tunes at {Le Panic, Lady Lux, Greenwood (Your Shot Comp), Gypsy, E11even, Alberts Tavern} and most recently won the crown at the {2011 UTS DJ Comp}. He is currently a finalist in the {Alberts Playday DJ comp} and will also be featured at SOHO in August. You might also hear Justin mix it up with a bit of dubstep and R&B. Keep your ears open for DJ C, we predict big things!

DJ

Why did you get into dj-ing?

What are your Pre-set rituals or habits?

Back in high school I always had an interest in music. I studied music and played a few instruments. But what I had a bigger interest in, was electronic music. I also had a few friends at the time with the same interests in DJ-ing and production and we all started around the same time and helped each other out. Shout outs to Dibbs, Wayfarer, Robust and The Bilbies look out for them in the future!

I don’t really have any pre-set rituals or habits but before my sets I get really anxious and jumpy... especially for the UTS comp as it was a competition. But I’m still young and fairly new to the scene, so that’ll just go away with time.

Who has been your biggest influence on dj-ing so far? There isn’t one person I could say influences me. But instead I’d say all the people who have supported me so far, including Tahlia, my parents and all my friends - they’ve always been there and supported me. Who would be your dream DJ to play a set with? Daft Punk.

What are you studying at uni? I study industrial design and I’m currently in first year. I want to thank all my uni friends because they have supported me so much lately. It really makes a difference! How did you hear about the UTS dj comp? I saw flyers around the Glasshouse Bar and thought that I would just give it a try! 3 words to describe yourself? Cheerful, Adaptive, Fun > www.facebook.com/djcmusic

You can catch both Tom Piper + DJ C (Justin Chong) ripping up the decks at {Semester II O'fest} Party, {Thursday 11 August} starting at {5pm}. DO NOT miss these guys! {Tix} can be purchased from the Union Info Desk (Level 3, UTS Tower Building) $10 for Advantage Program Members / $15 others.
