The Bucket List In 2015, ActivateUTS is celebrating "the bucket list". Wait... what is a bucket list?! By definition, it's a list of things that you would like to do before you die... but it turns out that this term only gained popularity after the 2007 movie The Bucket List came out (with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson). That's no joke - the "list" is popular because of these two...

"The bucket list" is actually a variation of the old idiom "to kick the bucket", and there are numerous theories on where that one originated. Some say it dates back to the Middle Ages when execution involved victims being strangled by a noose while standing on a pail or a bucket - all quite macabre stuff, really. But what's the point of all this?! Well, this year we're celebrating our bucket lists because we want all of you to make a list of all the things that you want to do today, not tomorrow! NO EXCUSES!!

Have a think about it. What kinds of things would you put on your bucket list if you were going to make one? We want you to get involved and show us your adventures!

With your help this year, ActivateUTS will raise $12,500 to help support the incredible work of Operation Smile Australia. Throughout the year, there will be events and activities to help students and staff raise funds for this great organisation. Look out for donations boxes, the Wall of Smiles near Towers CafĂŠ and other occasions to pay it forward!

OPERATION SMILE AUSTRALIA Operation Smile Australia is a children's medical charity whose sole focus is to improve the lives of children in developing countries that are born with cleft lips, cleft palates or other facial deformities. This organisation is based at Mater Hospital in Brisbane, and was founded in 1999, by plastic surgeon Dr Richard Lewandowski and his physiotherapist wife, Sue. Operation Smile Australia has performed craniofacial missions on children from developing countries and has sent Australian medical volunteers to participate in Operation Smile cleft lip and cleft palate international medical missions around the world. The world care program allows Operation Smile Australia to treat children who have more complicated facial disfigurements. The children are brought to Australia and cared for pre and post op, by a host family. This usually takes approximately one month, and isn't possible without the generous donations from the community.

The UTS Amazing Race is coming up in May with amazing prizes to be won - did you know that last year's winning team won a trip to Thailand?! While we count down the days, let's have a look at some 'outside of the box' destinations to add to your travel bucket list!

Hidden wonders

HAWAII BANYAN TREE

TURKMENISTAN DOOR TO HELL

If you think of Hawaii, you immediately think of the stunning beaches, amazing volcanoes and breathtaking views... but how about one enormous tree?! Well the Banyan Tree of Lahaina, Maui is arguably the most famous tree in Hawaii. It was originally planted in April 1873 and now it stands over 60 feet (18 metres) and it spans almost an entire block. That's just one tree!

Turkmenistan isn't exactly high up there on people's bucket lists to visit, but this burning crater in the middle of the Karakum Desert could boost their tourism! The 'Door to Hell' is actually a result of a blunder by Soviet scientists. It's a giant pit situated within a natural gas field and was created around 30 years ago when a drilling rig collapsed. Scientists set it on fire, expecting the rig to burn off within days... and alas, it's still burning!

Man made marvels

LITHUANIA HILL OF CROSSES

CHINA UPSIDE DOWN HOUSE

The Hill of Crosses is quite a sight to behold. It's one of the most well-known pilgrimage places for the Lithuanians - it's a symbol of national pride and its desire for freedom. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but the amount is upwards of 100,000!

If you'e ever wanted to witness somewhere that defies gravity, then this is the place. The house is still perfectly arranged - even though it's upside down! This house is located at the China Folk Painting Village in Fengjing Ancient Town.

Really big things

AUSTRALIA BIG LOBSTER

U.K. WORLD’S LARGEST DECK CHAIR

We're renowned for our collection for all things "Big" - the Big Banana, the Big Pineapple - but have you visited Larry the Big Lobster? Larry stands at 56 feet high and was built in 1979 to promote Kingston, South Australia’s seafood, wine and cheese industries.

Located at Bournemouth Beach, the giant deckchair signifies everything that is great about the British Summer. What's not to like about a deck chair that's 8 and a half metres tall (taller than a double-decker bus), 5 and a half metres wide and weighing in at 6 tonnes (heavier than an elephant!)?

Odd collections

JAPAN RAMEN MUSEUM

MEXICO CANCUN UNDERWATER MUSEUM

Most people travel to Japan for the cool toys, the technology, Uniqlo, and delicious sushi and ramen. Well you can pay homage to ramen further by visiting a museum dedicated to the founder of cup noodles! How does a tasting room of the different products sound?!

In Mexico, you will find the world's most famous underwater museum. It's only accessible by scuba diving - how amazing is that?! The museum has over 500 statues, which have been submerged to the bottom of the ocean floor - each one made with materials that are safe for marine life, encouraging the formation of a coral reef!

WHAT OUR CLUB IS ALL ABOUT

QUIRKY FACT

The UTS Society of Communications (UTSoC) is one of the largest clubs on campus and the point of call for all your communications needs. Our motto pretty much sums us up: 'Connect. Promote. Unite.' We connect students with industry contacts by sharing internships and hosting careers events; we promote our members' work from writing to art and everything in between; and we unite by fostering an environment in which you can be yourself, meet new people and enjoy a few cheeky bevs along the way.

Aside from Hugh Jackman, our team contains four of the five men to ever study communications. That's pretty good odds for you single pringles!

BEST THING ABOUT OUR CLUB

JOINING OUR CLUB You can sign up to UTSoC for a measly $5 through the ActivateUTS website, our Facebook page or by simply attending one of our many events.

UTSoC is like one big family. We are fun, friendly bunch of people who provide our members the tools they need to survive the rollercoaster that is university life.

HIGHLIGHTS We're holding the perfect mix of events before the mid-year break. On April 10 we’re running the "April Fools" edition of our infamous pub crawl and scavenger hunt. Picture this: five bars, one task list and a whole lot of debauchery. Grab your friends, get your costumes ready and prepare for a night you'll (never) forget! Perhaps you're a closet creative? As part of ActivateUTS' CreARTive week we'll be showcasing student art, short films and musical talent at our annual Open Deck & Arts Night. Plus, on May 19 we're giving you the chance to get your network on with some of communications industry's finest at the UTSoC Careers Q&A Night.

#MayThe4thBeWithYou

Star Wars fans have adopted May 4 as the day to celebrate all things Star Wars simply because “May the 4th” sounds a lot like “May the force be with you.” It’s the worldwide day to say it to all, and celebrate the beloved Star Wars story that binds our galaxies together. One of the earliest known records of “May the 4th” used in popular culture is in 1979, as described by author Alan Arnold while he was in the making of The Empire Strikes Back for Lucasfilm: Friday, May 4 “Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all.” Once the internet allowed Star Wars fans around the world to connect with one another, thanks to social media, May the 4th soon became a tradition each year, with fans online and offline proclaiming it “Star Wars Day.” The month of May has always been important to Star Wars fans, with the six live-action movies of the Star Wars saga debuting in May (starting with the original Star Wars on May 25, 1977). George Lucas’ also celebrates his birthday May 14, 1944. With the exciting launch of a new trilogy of movies beginning with Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming in the near future, this day to celebrate the saga and its amazing fans is certain to become even bigger each year.

WHAT TO DO ON STAR WARS DAY Watch the films

To honour the true reason for celebrating the day, today is a perfect day to watch all the Star Wars films in order of course (original to prequels).

Dress up as one of your favourite characters

Forget about the jeans and T-shirt, throw on a Princess Leia or Luke Skywalker outfit.

Live the day in character

Get in touch with your inner Star Wars character and spend the day playing a Star Wars role. Like Yoda for the entire day, you speak or dress up as Vader but be warned going to class or the office dressed up as Darth Vader may be a bit distracting to some but how awesome would it be to go to the café or bank and be served by Han Solo.

Make Wookie Cookies or Star Wars Cupcakes

What do most of us do when we want to celebrate an occasion? We make cakes, and really any excuse to make scrumptious goodies (see page 34 for recipe).

Sticking to those New Year resos It's been found that around 69% Terry of Aussies intend Crews says: to make at least I got the shakes that'll one resolution make you quake. I got the fries that will cross for the New Year. your eyes. I got the It's also been burgers that... will... I just got burgers. found that less than a quarter of those people will actually stick to their resolution. If this sounds familiar to you, then there's no time to stress about what you have or haven't done, and plenty of time to get started! No regrets, no stress, no excuses! Here are some ideas to help you stick to your goals: Write down your goals instead of keeping them in your head. Having an actual goal or checklist to follow might make you more motivated to reach it! Many of us want to lose weight, but set unrealistic goals, which then become unmotivating when progress is slow. To beat this, set yourself a sensible target week-to-week, and reward yourself

for reaching those small milestones. For example, if you lose a couple of kilos in the first month, go out and buy yourself a new pair of shoes or a nice top. Or even better, treat yourself to a soothing massage. Don't be afraid to ask for help! A resolution of yours may be to perfect a particular exercise so feel free to seek the advice of a trainer. The team here at ActivateFit on Harris are more than willing to give you tips on whatever you're after, all you have to do is ask! Don't be hard on yourself when things don't go to according to plan. This isn't failure, it's just part of the process! If you have any more tips on how to stay motivated in the goals that you set, we'd love to hear them, so feel free to post them on our Facebook page!

See you at the gym soon! www.facebook.com/activatefitonharris www.activatefit.com.au

That's right - it's been almost thirty years... and now MAX IS BACK! Fourth movie, same director, but a very different Max. Directed by: Alex Garland Cast: Domhnall Glesson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander Genre: Thriller | Science Fiction In theatres: 7 May

The Barden Bellas are returning to the big screen with their second film, but this time they'll be taking the international stage to battle some acapella heavyweights - a "European group" known as Das Sound Machine. The perfect movie for a night of giggles and sing-alongs.

Keep an eye out for one of the most anticipated films of the year. Alex Garland (author of The Beach, and screenwriter for the films 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd ) makes his directorial debut with Ex Machina - a movie about deception, sexy robots, and a young programmer who joins a secret artificial intelligence experiment.

ZOMBEAVERS Directed by: Jordan Rubin Cast: Rachel Melvin, Cortney Palm, Bill Burr Genre: Action | Horror | Comedy Rating: R (for horror violence/gore, crude sexual content, graphic nudity + language throughout) Released: April 2014 We at Playground looooove a cheesy horror comedy! In fact, the more cheese, the better! For those of you who are fans of movies like Sharknado, Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus or other B-grade movies involving monsters, quality acting and a low budget, this is the movie for you! Zombeavers is a 2014 film about college kids who are attacked by (yep... you guessed it...) zombie beavers! It will be showing two sessions at this season's Cult Classics: A Season of Badass Films at the Dendy Newtown on Monday 20 April, so get in quick!

We can't get enough of alt-J, so we're cheering that they are back on the road and coming down under! alt J's earlier sell-out Aussie performance proved that they are here to stay, with a flawless rendition of tracks from both 'An Awesome Wave' and 'This is All Yours'.
