G’Day! Well the time has finally come where we celebrate that thing that happens only once every four years, the addition of a 366th day into our calendars! Well not exactly. If you hadn’t already heard we are on the brink of the 2012 London Olympic Games! With the Olympics upon us we’ve decided to do a double edition this month to celebrate all things Olympic and all things O’Fest with our bi-annual music festival just around the corner! With the thermometer tipped to go below freezing this month the forecast is for ice, and lots of it right out front of the UTS Tower building, the word on the street is that an ice rink is going right out the front! Keep your eyes peeled for Polar Bears and Igloos around 10 August! Special mention to our UTS sports superstars that took out first place at Eastern Uni Games! And good luck to our three current Olympic athletes Gavin Woods, Lucinda Whitty, Hayder Shkara. Go for gold! Love you long time, Playground

ATTENDING A MUSIC FESTIVAL IS PRACTICALLY A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR UNI STUDENTS. The Australian festival scene is one that shouldn’t be missed by any music lover, party goer or all-round socialite. With an array of different styles and music genres there’s definitely a festival for everyone. Whether it’s chilling out at a campsite at Splendour in the Grass, or rocking out on front stage at Big Day Out or partying hard all night long at Stereosonic, you’re bound to find your niche! So for all the fresh-faced 18 year olds/new international students/late festival developers, that haven’t had their official festival cherry popped theres a few things you need to learn from the seasoned twenty-something festival goers...
Rule #1 - Water is your new best friend...just like in the barren dessert the festival scene can be harsh, full of hot heads and dehydrated damsels in distress. Drink plenty of water so you don’t end up in the Ambo tent while all your friends keep on party rocking.
Rule #2 - No man is to be left behind...ever wonder why army commandos use walkie talkies? So they don’t get sucked into the technological black hole that is a music festival...clogged network, no service, network jammed, ring a bell anyone? Until Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone all decide to make a love child and call it complete coverage you will never find a lost friend at a festival, no matter how high you hold your phone over your head as you attempt to find network somewhere at 6 foot 5 inches high.
Rule #3 - Less equals more...creeps! That’s right when dressing your best for a festival don’t go for the less is more option as it won’t always work in your favour. Gents, not every lady wants to feel the beads of sweat that have formed a nice sheen in your bare chest wiped across her face every time you turnaround..we weren't planning on wearing waterproof mascara today. Ladies, the golden rule of ‘If you’ve got it flaunt it’ still applies, however with that comes freaks, geeks and beedy eyed stares...you have been warned! So if you’re new to the scene, or the country, it’s always best to start small and work your way up to one of the big four festivals. This month UTS O’Fest will be arriving on campus to bring to you some of the hottest acts Australia has to offer, with most notable mentions going out to Bluejuice, Hungry Kids of Hungary, Georgia Fair and The Preachers. So in the words of Lara Bingle, ‘Where the bloody hell are ya?’ Buy a ticket today and check out what UTS has to offer in your own back yard! And for all those seasoned festival goers...I’ll see ya in the front row!!

For the brave boys, rock a long necklace with a quirky charm on the end…mini bread ties, mouth organs or rubiks cube charms spring to mind. festival item - the denim cut-offs. *ThisStaple all time fave is versatile and goes with everything. And we’re not just talking girls here; many-a-man have been seen rocking the denim cut-off (albeit not as short as the ladies) but they too can choose which ever shirt they wish, however most would rather a look sans- shirt. Why not change up your look and step out in some
double denim? But be warned ladies, no one wants to see what you had for breakfast, so keep your denim classy and not of the micro size! UP, THE TRUSTY HAT! Whether it *be NEXT wide brimmed, short brimmed, uni-sex, straw, flat-top, a beanie or has ears, look cool and be sun safe at the same time. SHOES. Guys and girls, this is your perfect *opportunity to bring out your inner gangsta and wear your favourite hi-tops, just remember to waterproof them a couple days in advance so all that dirt and grub comes off. GOT A VINTAGE OR SWANKY LOOKING *CAMERA? Grab a lanyard and wear it around your neck for the day. You can’t possibly lose it and won’t miss a moment all day! LASTLY, BE A TIGGER NOT AN EEYORE. AN OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE Liz Brett OUR VERY OWN CEO, LIZ BRETT IS A FORMER OLYMPIAN AND KEEN SPORT ENTHUSIAST. PLAYGROUND SAT DOWN WITH LIZ TO HEAR HER STORY FROM A HUMBLE BEGINNING TO OLYMPIC GLORY. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE VOLLEYBALL OVER OTHER SPORTS LB: I had been playing competitive tennis from the age of 5 and by the time I was 15 I wasn’t enjoying it at all. I was walking past the school gym and saw this game where you got to smash a ball over a net and dive around the court. It looked like so much fun, so I asked to join in. My first game of volleyball was in year 11 at High school in 1994.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE AND SUCCEED TO THE OLYMPICS LB: In many ways I was very lucky to have begun when I did at high school. The school coach had played for Australia and was really generous with her time and energy. After 6 months I was training with the Queensland U/17’s team and at the 1995 National Jnr Championships I was selected in the Australian Jnr Squad to tour Thailand and Japan. The Japan tour was with the Australian Women’s Senior team and it was so inspirational to see this sport being played at the highest level. I knew then and there that I wanted to play for Australia and if I could, represent our country at the Olympic Games. Needless to say I’ve always been highly competitive with sport!
HAVE YOU COMPETED IN ANY OTHER OLYMPIC GAMES OR INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS LB: Sydney was my only Olympic Games, however I count myself very lucky for the 6 years I spent playing volleyball professionally. In 1998 I was the youngest player to be contracted to a professional team in Italy to play in the Seria A, Coppa di Italia, in Southern Italy which is the highest professional volleyball league in the world. I was only 18 and playing against women who had been playing volleyball longer than I’d be alive was an incredibly humbling experience. I returned to the AIS (Canberra) after my contract finished, determined to be the best Libero in the world at the 2000 Olympic Games. All up I played 130 Official International games during my career and these games spanned the 5 continents of the world.
AS THE MOST SKILLED DEFENSIVE PLAYER ON THE COURT, THE ‘LIBERO’ POSITION SEEMS TO REQUIRE A LOT OF PASSION AND FIRE. WERE YOU SELECTED AS THIS OR DID YOU PUT YOUR HAND UP TO PLAY THIS PART LB: My coach asked me if I’d be willing to play that role in the team. I have always been a passionate athlete and this certainly helped in the Libero role. To be honest though it was the best way I could contribute to the Australian Team, mostly because of my height. I’m short for international volleyball . Yes – 6ft is short in women’s volleyball, Russia’s smallest athlete was 6ft 2!
HOW GRUELLING WAS YOUR OLYMPIC TRAINING SCHEDULE LB: Training was a full time job at the AIS in Canberra for the 5 years leading up to the Olympics. We had 2 x 3 hr court sessions 5 days per week, 1 x 3 hr session on Saturday. We lifted weights 4 times per week and then we’d have individual fitness and skills sessions interspersed throughout. All up our training was between 40-50hours per week and that didn’t include treatment – i.e. physio and massage...or seeing a sports psychologist...just kidding
WHAT SACRIFICES DID YOU MAKE TO GET TO THE OLYMPICS LB: It was never a sacrifice. I feel completely honoured to have been able to compete in a sport that I absolutely loved at the highest level in the world. My family were the ones who made the sacrifice. They worked hard to enable me to travel overseas. My family were an amazing support base during those 6 years, so doing something that made them proud made it all worthwhile.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE PART OF COMPETING AT THE OLYMPICS LB: The coolest part was walking into the opening ceremony and seeing 100,000 people cheering for us. However, the best part was walking out of the stadium and hearing my name being called out. I looked up and my whole family were seated right above the exit. The team then picked me up and pushed me into the seats so I could give them a cuddle. The feeling was incredible and the memory still brings tears to my eyes. Having all my family and a number of friends watching all my games was great; it was incredible to finally be able to play in front of a home crowd
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER ATHLETES ASPIRING TO COMPETE AT AN OLYMPIC GAMES LB: Work hard, respect your coach, support your team mates and remember that balance is key. If all you focus on is sport and you don’t have anything to balance it, it can be to your detriment. I can’t recommend highly enough working or studying (even if it’s only one subject per semester or a few hours at a coffee shop) while you’re playing sport at the highest level. Doing a little of something else other than sport helps you keep perspective.
DID YOU HAVE ANY PRE-GAME RITUALS LB: Sure did – left sock, right sock, left knee pad, right knee pad, left shoe, right shoe, back brace (I was getting old by this stage) and then I’m ready.

To celebrate all things Olympics, this month we’ve taken a trip down memory lane, back to the Sydney 2000 Games, and the hilarious commentary by Roy & HG on ‘The Dream’, for Eric "The Eel" Moussambani's swimming event. We love an underdog story, and Eric the Eel is our number one pick. He swam his 100m heat alone at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games after his two competitors were disqualified. His time of 1:52.72 was the slowest seen at any Olympics and more than a minute behind the world record. But he received a standing ovation and instant fame as reporters dubbed him ‘Eric the Eel’. Fast forward to 2012, and Eric has been named as the coach of the Equatorial Guinea swim team for the London Olympics. Go Eric!

UTS ALUMNI OLYMPIC HONOUR ROLL JOANNE BRIGDEN-JONES: KAYAK B.Nursing 2006–2010
Hayder, a UTS Law and Communications student, has represented Australia in Taekwondo on the world scene dozens of times since his debut in 2006. Hayder shows the amazing talent, experience and dedication that is only present in Olympic athletes, and this has him inches away from an Olympic debut in a sport where only a few high level competitors get a chance to compete internationally.

Hayder’s performances in the World Championships in 2009 and 2011 were outstanding, and he also represented UTS and Australia in the World University Games in China in 2011, coming 9th overall. He has again been selected in the World University Championships squad to compete in Pocheon, Korea between the 25th and 30th May. This, combined with his recent placings at the US and German Open have positioned him as the number 2 Australian athlete in Taekwondo for 2011 and 2012 and has won him a spot on the Australian Olympic Shadow team, where he will be touring with the squad for the London 2012 Games.

Gavin Woods began playing water polo at a very young age and given that Gavin’s father David is a three time Olympian for the same sport, he had some big shoes to fill.
Lucinda has been competing on the international sailing stage since 2006, where she represented Australia in the Youth Olympics and in numerous Open International events.
Gavin first donned the green and gold Speedo’s in 1997, having secured a full scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Only one year later, when he was still eligible for the Junior Team, Gavin competed with the Australian Men’s senior team at the World Championships, where they finished in 4th place. This was the spark that fuelled an amazing sporting career for Gavin.
Throughout 2007 and 2008 Lucinda continued to refine her sailing skills and in 2009 the commitment she had shown to her sport paid off, with Lucinda and her Australian Team winning the ISAF World Women’s Match Racing Championships.
Since then, he competed in three Olympic Games, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 before deciding to hang up his togs from international competition to begin his studies at UTS, work full time as an accountant and raise his two small children with his wife Caroline (also an Olympic athlete for swimming). Continuing to compete with the UTS Water Polo Club, Balmain in the National League, slowly but surely that competitive drive came back and in 2010, Gavin made himself available for international competition with the Australian team.
Lucinda’s success continued in 2010, being part of the team that represented UTS and Australia at the Australian University Match Racing Championships in Greece, winning bronze. On top of her international sailing success Lucinda was named in the Australian Sailing Development Squad in 2010, a team selected to assist athletes who have the clear potential for National and Olympic Sailing representation. This has clearly paid off, as Lucinda has been selected for the Australian Women’s Match Racing squad, heading to London for the 2012 Olympics.
The Australian Men’s Water Polo team qualified for London 2012 and Gavin will be making his fourth Olympic appearance, a feat only a handful of Australian athletes have ever accomplished.

Backstage WHAT OUR CLUB IS ABOUT: Backstage is UTS’ theatre and film society. We are all about encouraging students to act, create, direct and perform. WHEN WE MEET: Every Wednesday during semester for Secret Film Night where we screen a film chosen by a member. This is the best way to keep in the loop about upcoming auditions and other opportunities.

ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE OUR MEMBERS: Gregarious. WHY PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO JOIN: Anyone who’s interested in acting, directing, producing or receiving discounts on performances should join. Backstage is always looking for set and costume designers, graphic designers, sound and lighting technicians, choreographers and playwrights. We are the funnest club and also one of the youngest which means there are ample opportunities to get as involved. SOCIAL EVENTS: Secret Film Night of course! We also hold welcome and end of semester parties at the Loft. You can probably find us upstairs in the Lansdowne after the closing night of any show. BEST THING ABOUT YOUR CLUB: Probably the after parties. Kidding. The best thing is how much we support original student creativity. Everything is student directed, produced and designed, and a lot of it is student written. Just this year so far we’ve staged an entirely original musical, a short play night composed entirely of student written plays, and two plays directed by students. COMING UP THIS SEMESTER: First up is The Vagina Monologues in week 3, which will mix the original versions with some written by students. A few weeks later we’ll be doing our third Short Play Night. This is always a fun night for newcomers because it includes a wide variety of plays and performers. In mid September we’ll be performing The Atheist’s Guide to the Galaxy as part of the Sydney Fringe festival; we’re very excited about this one because it’s an all original musical and it’s the first time we’ve taken a performance beyond the hearth of UTS. We’ll finish up the semester with an original play by one of our members.
