Get the low down on the Aussie artists taking the stage at Winterfest!

Violent Soho Queenslanders Violent Soho burst onto the alternative rock scene in 2006 echoing 90s acts such as The Pixies and Nirvana. Their debut album Pigs & T.V. (which was funded through selling one of the band member's cars!) got industry heads talking, with Faster Louder describing them as "a band with unlimited potential". Following their launch, Violent Soho toured with The Grates, Faker, Grafton Primary and were part of the line-up at St Jerome's Laneway Festival, Homebake, Meredith Music Festival, Falls Festival and Southbound Festival. During this jam-packed period, the band managed to release their first full length album, We Don’t Belong Here, and their second self-titled album. Their third, highly acclaimed studio album Hungry Ghost, dripped with attitude and melodic sounds and scored them sell out headline tours across the country at Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival - and their single 'Covered in Chrome' was voted number 14 on 'Triple J's 2013 Hottest 100'.

Golden Features

DMA's DMA's were formed when three guys from Sydney came together and began by playing nostalgic garage-pop in a bedroom in Newtown. DMA's demoed their first track in that same Newtown bedroom before releasing an official track and playing a single gig, from there they were picked up by record label I OH YOU on the basis of that one original demo! Following their signing, their debut single 'Delete', a love song for digital romantics, was released. Their second single, the gloriously noisy 'Feels Like 37', lead to Channel V calling them "the next big thing", and Triple J adding them to rotation. DMA's have an extensive list of sell-out shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane cementing their arrival to the Aussie music scene and are now set to show us how they rock a party tune.

SAFIA This upcoming electro-indie three piece unveiled their debut single 'Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues' and it quickly shot to number one on the ‘iTunes Electronic chart’ and received extensive airtime across US college radio stations. SAFIA’s beat and synth driven sounds, paired with live instrumentation and vocals got them noticed and on tour with locals Rufus and Oliver Tank, as well as warming up the stages for internationals Disclosure, Aluna George and Rudimental! SAFIA shot up the Triple J Unearthed ladder, landing them a prime spot playing at Groovin the Moo in Canberra in 2013.

Tom Stell, a humble 23 year old from Sydney, began making electronic dance music on the most basic decks you could buy. Out-growing the atypical EDM sound, Tom began producing tunes that he was happier with under the secret alias of Golden Features. Tom, who has a strong background in the arts, began a complete creative project combining both music and imagery, particularly graffiti. When Golden Features was coming to fruition, Tom couldn’t afford press shots, so a photoshopped image of himself, which is what you see on his EP cover and promo’s. Golden Features maintains an anonymous character so that the music is solely about the art. Golden Features launched a four track EP earlier in the year, which gained tens of thousands of plays in a matter of days. The lead single, 'Tell Me', was picked up by Triple J and had its first airplay in less than 24 hours from release.

what a wonderful vertical world Why are we constantly fascinated by making things bigger or taller? And does bigger always mean better?

Bigger is better

The best things come in small packages

WINDOW CLEANING Have you ever looked at one of Sydney’s giant skyscrapers and wondered how on earth the windows get cleaned? Abseiling window cleaners! Without a doubt cleaning these ever growing buildings is one of the scariest professions that springs to mind for many of us, but in recent years a group of these brave chaps have even dressed up as superheroes and decided to tackle the grime on the dirty windows of a children’s hospital in Pittsburg in the US. The children rushed to the windows to see their favourite comic book heroes abseiling down the building!

GRANDMA'S

Closer to home, these abseiling cleaners also scale the Opera House four times a year to clean their 1,056,006 tiles!

DOMENIC ALVARO'S SMALL HOUse

If you prefer a venue with an intimate vibe then Grandma’s is the way to go. This basement bar in the heart of the CBD is the kind of place you have to know about to even know it exists (since there’s not even a sign outside!) Located on Clarence Street in the heart of the busy Sydney CBD, Grandma’s has a max capacity for 50 people and is adorned with balls of wool with knitting needles, rocking chairs and vintage mugs, making for an entirely homely and kitsch environment.

There are more and more places around Australia embracing the concept of vertical gardens. Central Park (right across from the Tower Building, Broadway Campus) is now home to one of the world’s "tallest gardens" or green walls (the number one title is now held by a project in Singapore). Who on earth waters these things?

In 2011 Domenic Alvaro was awarded the World House of the Year for his ‘Small House’. Alvaro bought three car parking spaces on a corner in Surry Hills (a tiny 42-square-metre plot), after taking inspiration from architects in Tokyo who work with incredibly small spaces. Domenic used his vertical space by building the house upwards rather than outwards (although just five storeys - certainly not to sky-scraper standards!). Despite the tiny size of this parcel of land, the house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, living, kitchen and dining areas!

TALLEST BUILDINGS

small bars at uts

Currently, the world’s tallest building is the Burj Khalifa which stands at a whopping 828 metres located in Dubai. For those of you that have travelled to the States, both the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building were once the tallest buildings in the world… albeit back in the 1930s. For those interested, the Sydney Westfield Tower is 309 metres from the bottom to the top of the spire, which makes it Sydney’s tallest building. Our very own UTS Tower, is a modest 121 metres tall.

Our very own bar The Underground provides fab and pocket friendly options for students and as the name suggests, is located underground! There’s areas to sit and chill, play games of pool and also a cosy, little chalet with large screens for catching up on the latest films or live sports. Despite its smallish interior The Loft at UTS also provides some fantastic premium drinks at low prices.

VERTICAL GARDENING

PARKOUR This is definitely a sport not for the faint hearted. It is described as a philosophy and training method for movement through any environment at speed. The concept is to overcome all physical and mental obstacles in your path by using your body and mind to run, climb, jump and vault. These cool, adrenalinejunkie ninjas can usually be found hopping (literally!) from tall building to equally tall building.

utsss Big shout out to the guys in UTSSS (University of Technology Sydney Speleological Society – check them out on page 29) who spend the majority of their days maneuvering through underground caves and tiny spaces!

hear me roar! Tyrion from Game of Thrones is living proof that the best things come in small packages (well for the time being anyway!).

A Short Story by Joshua Cram (President of the Writer’s Society)

The UTS Writer’s Society (www.facebook.com/groups/UTS.Writers) provides for an extracurricular writing community at UTS. They can help you hone your craft and showcase your work.

The stone moon’s light stripes the field tonight, white and gold on rime. Snow drips from drab trees to slide like milk on the gloss sheet of frost at my feet. A gliding ember soars over the pond. How long until I remember how to light a fire? We needed an hour in the dying afternoon. We were husks, of unhushed mirth: whistling in mistling and singing listless and hanging gin-hit while we waited shiftless; shouted breathless; hummed lipless. Children scared shitless. Now they sleep in their dark tents. I wonder if I am unhappy yet. Every star is a cold gem - an asterism set in an asterism. If I squint, the stars streak to touch each other, tenderly. Sitting mute, my mind sounds mutiny until I stand and I meander around the tents to skate my fingers in dew. Wake up and play now. Be at ease. It seems an easy slope to my home, or mild enough to gallop down anyhow. Beyond the trees, moonlight blares at me: fractured strokes of light, a tease. It limns the folds of clouds, thick as all the snow dregs festooning green. Smoke plumes over me. "Hey there," you say. Turn turtle, to see me inverted. Cut-paper shadows rave on your tent’s cloth. You move onto your stomach - and graze your cigarette across leaves of grass, which we watch burn to grey. I kneel in churned mud to grab your wrist and I whisper, "Don’t do it again." "You’re a mean drunk. We’re going to be getting up to go, in about an hour." "Why would you do that? Now why would you leave me? I’m going to beg ... am going to bed." I stand, twice. "Don’t tell anyone I slept indoors, all right?"

*** So a harvest-heavy moon looks on, and its bone fingermark wavers as I return to the waterside. Fish-white flesh shines - and my sleeves spread wide to curb my open-eyed slide into darkness. Teeth could scatter, chattering in my numb jaw. Lungs are heartbeaten drums as I plunge and my feet sink into leaf-pulp. *** I am perched on the back steps and I see first light gleam: dark glass still loath to let in light. And time jumps in the hum of sleep. All the trees are glistening: so very wet from dew and thaw. People are stirring. My dogs wait at the back door to hassle people. They shift on their front paws, and don’t meet my eyes. I see you now. You reek of dawn air, and pine needles sit upon your shoulder and cold has flushed your fingers and cheeks. A paper lantern swings in wind and a great welling-up of tears shocks us both. "I don’t want all of you to go." Your forehead creases, and you smile. "Meaning you’d like someone to stay?" "Aw, shut up. I just saw that lantern, and I got a little bit silly. We should go." "Uh, how long does it take to walk? It’s only twenty minutes, right?" you say. "It takes an hour, at least. I think we chose the wrong season for everybody to come up here. Though, honestly, the only time we’ve had snow is the spring." "It’s pretty fucking cold, but," you say, "I’ve my cigarettes to keep me warm." "Light a man his cigarette, you’re warm for the night. Light a man on fire, and you’re warm for the rest of his life. Wait, before you go I want to show you -"

hen we hear winter, we think coats, blazers, boots, beanies and scarves. It’s easy to fall into the habit of slathering on the layers to stay warm, but forgetting our love of fashion in the meantime! We’ve taken advice and inspiration from the world’s most devoted fashionistas at Vogue to ensure you ladies and gents keep up with the latest trends this season.

FOR THE Gals... All white errythang! Pick one colour and stick to it. All white. All maroon. All mustard. Pick it and own it Rock patterned knits with a bold and contrasting lip - we’re thinking a black and white knit with a fuschia lip. If lippy isn’t your thing, wear a fluro knit instead Channel your inner Parisian style with a neutral colour combo. Try a white tee with a beige blazer, and add a red tartan scarf Oversized coats are here to stay, as are oversized coats with popped collars (we never thought we’d see the day where ‘poppin yo colla’ was actually on trend!) Re-live summer and throw a chunky knit over your favourite floral dress (and think of sunnier days when your teeth begin to chatter!) Whether you’re braving the cold at the footy or chowing down on $1 hotdogs at the Soda Factory (look it up: you’ll thank us!) don a big brimmed hat for instant chic Denim’s annoying cousin that just won’t leave the party is still here - we have a feeling chambray is going to be around for a long time (but we’re secretly happy!)

FOR THE Guys... Slim pants. Need we say more Move over 50 Shades of Grey, we’re only seeing 50 shades of green! Khaki, mint and lime: green is the new ‘IT’ guy in town Mankets. Yes, Mankets. We hear you ask, what on earth is a manket? Let us explain. You see, the guys have noticed us ladies looking so cosy and warm in our super oversized scarves and throws, and they want to get amongst it. Enter man blankets and you have mankets Orange is the new black Roll-necks, or as us Aussies call them, skivvies, are finally cool again. You can thank Mum later for keeping them for all these years! Swapping your ‘blacks’ for browns at a black tie or formal event will leave you with ultimate cred this season (just don’t forget your bow tie!) And if you’re feeling bold, slick your hair back in the ‘wet look’ a la Chuck Bass of Gossip Girl fame

25

"do it! do it now!"

Inventive Exercise: Who needs Kettlebells anyway? So back in our April edition, we gave you some 'Tips for Working out in Winter'. We’re more than halfway through winter now and there's been some really cold nights and keeping fit can be a real drag; when it’s this chilly we could do with any form of motivation to warm us up! Here are some inventive ways to stay in shape (without even having to rock up to the gym!) In the Tower Building, there are heeeeaps of floors and most of us are guilty of just taking the lift up to class - hey, why wouldn’t you? How about trying (if you aren't running late to a tute of course) hopping out a few floors early and taking the stairs the rest of the way? If you use Sydney's public transport and you're guilty of driving to the station or your bus stop, why not try walking from your place to the stop one or two days a week? Or if you live a little bit too far for your limbs to carry you, park a few blocks away and just walk the rest. The official 'Ride to Work Day' is Wednesday, 15 October, but there’s no reason why you can’t do it at least once a week before then. And of course, it doesn’t have to be 'Ride to Work Day', you could ride to uni, your local grocery store for your weekly shop or even to your best mate's place. There's bike storage located all over campus, such as

outside the MPSH and ActivateFit on Harris (Building 4, Harris St) and at the main entrance to Kuring-gai campus. Keep an eye out for our very own upcoming event: 'Ride to UTS Day' - but in the meantime, get cycling! You could spend hours lounging around in front of the TV watching movies or re-runs of Game of Thrones. Make the most of this time - get yourself a yoga mat and a foam roller and do some stretches in the luxury of your own lounge. Foam rollers help you iron out those knots that form in your muscles, which helps aid in the recovery of muscles. If you don't want to fork out the money for the foam roller, you can get a similar effect from using a tennis ball. Next time you go down to the supermarket, instead of putting all of your groceries into a trolley, put it all into a basket. Once you're done, carry home your shopping bags - it's a surprisingly good upper body workout! Every little bit helps!

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Directed by: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez Cast: Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Josh Brolin, Jaime King, Lady Gaga Genre: Action | Crime | Thriller In theatres: 21 August Any movie that features a cast this sexy should probably be illegal. This August, we see the second film to emerge from Frank Miller’s Sin City graphic novels, and we should expect nothing less than pure cinematic ecstasy. The first Sin City was one of the first movies to be filmed almost entirely in front of a green screen, ensuring that kickass graphic novel look that made the movie so special. It’s super exciting to hear that the latest instalment will be no different at all. This time around, we’ll get to see more short stories of corruption, murder and love played out by some familiar faces from the first movie, next to some hot, new talent.

the Giver

A Long Way Down

Directed by: Phillip Noyce Cast: Brenton Thwaites, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift Genre: Drama | Sci-Fi In theatres: 21 August

Directed by: Pascal Chaumeil Cast: Aaron Paul, Toni Collette, Pierce Brosnan, Isabelle Poots Genre: Comedy In theatres: 28 August

The Giver follows the story of young Jonas (aka this year’s “chosen one”), who learns that his seemingly perfect world comes with a dark and horrible history. This children’s novel was a massive hit when it came out in the 90s and the time has finally come for this epic tale to get a big fat Hollywood injection - complete with ridiculously good-looking-up-andcomers, a couple of A-listers and a juicy $25 million budget.

A Long Way Down tells the story of four desperate strangers with a common goal - to commit suicide on New Year’s Eve by jumping off a building in London. Funnily enough, they ruin each others’ plans by picking the same building, which ultimately leads them to realise that they are not alone. Based on the best-selling novel by Nick Hornby (author of About a Boy and High Fidelity).

the shining Directed by: Stanley Kubrick Cast: Jack Nicholswon, Shelley Duvall Genre: Horror Released: November 1980 Let’s take it back to one of the deadliest winter classics ever made! Kubrick’s The Shining is a psychological horror based on the 1977 novel by the KING of horror himself - Stephen King! It tells the story of a small family stuck in a huge and isolated hotel over winter. In the hotel, they are surrounded by a number of supernatural visitors and slowly driven to madness. There are so many reasons why this movie is a mustsee for all horror enthusiasts, such as the eerie orchestral music, that super creepy pair of twins, and most importantly to hear one of the most overused lines from a movie ever - “Heeeeeere’s Johnny!” So grab your squishiest pillow, curl up with a warm blanket and enjoy this chilly winter classic!

mARVEL

iRON pATRIOT #4 Iron Patriot isn’t just about a man in a clunky, iron suit punching bad guys in the face. It deals a lot with family and the lengths family will go to to protect each other. Writer Ales Kot does a great job at creating the family dynamic between James, Lila, and Terrence Rhodes. There are a few moments within this issue that really show how much these guys love each other. It may not be the traditional sense of love we all know, but Iron Patriot beating up bad guys is a much better read than 20 pages of hugging. The new character, who is controlling James and labelled as 'The Villain' in the opening credits, is very cool. He is very committed to his plan and considers himself the hero of the story. The best villains are always the ones who believe they are doing what they’re doing for the betterment of mankind. This issue ends with a pretty awesome cliff-hanger that has this new villain up against something different but familiar. Kot, Brown, and Chralampidis provide readers with a book that’s one-part family, one-part fighting the system, with a side order of eye candy!

dc cOMICS

iNFINITY mAN AND THE fOREVER pEOPLE #1 After the soul-crushing cancellation of O.M.A.C. due to low sales, it seemed unlikely that another Jack Kirby creation would be resurrected at DC. Luckily that has not proven to be true as Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen have brought the New Gods to the New 52 in a big way in Infinity Man and the Forever People #1. It focuses on the first Earth journey for a group of newly graduated New Gods straight from New Genesis. From the get go DiDio establishes the main characters and their personalities. Best of all is that they’re all unique yet strangely ordinary Earth people, despite where they originate from. Keith Giffen’s art is not what we typically see from him, with the blocky renderings. However, it feels right as it gives the book a little bit more of a Kirby vibe. There are a few places this story falters. There’s no indication of who Infinity Man or the Forever People are and very little build up is created for the villain. These characters get to Earth but not much else happens in the bigger picture. The best aspect of the book is that it is a perfect entry point for people who know little to nothing about the New Gods; it’s simple to jump into. With the New Gods making a true debut on the New 52’s Earth, the teasers at the end of Forever Evil and all that’s going on with the Parademons on Earth 2, it’s possible that this book will have a huge part in the future of the DC Universe and that alone makes it a must-read.

Dark Horse tHE sTRAIN #1

The Strain is based on a vampiric novel series co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The cinematic chops of Del Toro should surely get fans through the door on this venture, certainly for those who like his movies. David Lapham and Mike Huddleston both stay true to the source material while making this comic book their own. The book wants us to know and care about the main characters, and leaves us with a few wicked hints of where things are going. This effort is applauded because any horror story is only as good as the people the horror endangers. The reader already cares about the scientific lead and the worries that await him. This horror story smartly lays out the characters first. It encourages you to want to know more about these people, whilst leaving you wary of getting too involved due to the potential loss that may strike. If you want to pigeon hole this book into a genre: don’t choose ‘vampire.’ That current cultural cache doesn’t represent this book at all. This is cerebral horror with a dark, beastly side just waiting to pounce.

mulled wine XTRA E H T I W

! M O O V VA VA The cooler weather is the perfect excuse to enjoy a tasty mug of mulled vino with mates. Channel wooden chalet, log fire and taxidermy wall art and you’re good to go.

All of the mulled wine recipes basically take the same prep: put all the ingredients in a large pan and warm up VERY slowly never allowing it to boil.

1 bottle of cheap red wine (the cheaper the better)

1 large orange

(or just ½ pint smooth orange juice if slicing up fruit aint your bag)

150g caster sugar

optional ingredients... For Berry Mulled Wine:

Mixed berries

(raspberries, strawberries and blueberries work well)

For Chocolate Mulled Wine:

cinnamon stick

200g cocoa powder + 500g good dark chocolate (broken into pieces)

A couple of pinches of ground nutmeg

Raisins + hazelnuts

Vanilla pod

A splash of Mum + Dad’s brandy?

6 cloves

(halved lengthways)

For Glögg:

For the berry option, add berries two minutes before serving. For chocolate option, put 500ml water, sugar, cocoa powder and spices in pan and bring to a simmer before adding chocolate and whisking well. Then add sliced oranges and red wine - serve warm rather than hot. And for Glögg, just throw in some raisins and hazelnuts willy-nilly before serving. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
