ISSUE 1 - 2015

We hope you had an amazing Christmas break! This year is going to be huge at UTS, and we look forward to partying with you at some of the year's biggest events. First off we have O'Week, which kicks off from 16 February: flick over to pages 8-9 for more info on which bands will be rocking the stage at O'Fest on Friday 20 February. It's one hell of a line-up, so don't miss out! ActivateUTS also celebrates its first birthday in February! In celebration, we've decided to take a look at the most expensive things in the world (pages 10-11). We might not have a few million bucks to celebrate with, but who says we can't dream big?! As you all know, it's Valentine's Day on 14 February. But let's not pretend that the love game is always smooth sailing: from awful pickup lines to hideous tattoo dedications, head over to page 21 for a beginner's guide to Valentine's Day, and to page 24 for what not wear on a date! If you are single this Valentine's Day, why not treat yourself to some Red Velvet cupcakes (recipe on page 34)? One word for you: self-love. But if you are happily coupled (no, we're not completely anti-romance), then make this delicious treat for your partner! It doesn't get much cuter than cupcakes. Well, maybe puppies. Puppies are cute. Have fun this semester, stay safe, and see you on campus!

Did you know‌? Before the 19th century, dates of birth weren't officially noted. England began keeping parish records of births, deaths and marriages in 1538 but this wasn't done for the entire population until the Registration Act of 1836. Interestingly, it wasn't until the 1851 census that people had to record their precise ages.

Get the low down on the Aussie artists taking the stage at O'fest!

San Cisco After a busy few months performing at Big Day Out, Laneway, and Groovin' the Moo, Fremantle four piece San Cisco are ready to get their show on the road once again! Band members Jordi, Josh, Nick and Scarlett will no doubt get the crowd dancing as they perform at our very own O'Fest, with tracks such as Triple J Hottest 100's 'Awkward' (written in only one afternoon!), as well as their latest hit single 'Run'. San Cisco's debut EP Golden Revolver has received glowing reviews in both Australia and abroad, with their low-fi garage pop sound influenced by the likes of MGMT and Vampire Weekend. Having supported bands like Architecture in Helsinki, The Grates, Jebediah and Kimbra, San Cisco have thoroughly developed their unique sound - and with three EPs and a full album to their name, it's safe to say San Cisco are here to stay with their infectious funky-beat!

The Kite String Tangle Crowd favourite The Kite String Tangle, the solo project of alternate electronic artist Danny Harley, has amassed over one million SoundCloud plays for his hit, 'Given the Chance', and successfully taken out 19th place in Triple J's Hottest 100 in 2013! We have a feeling that these accolades are just the beginning after two sold out national tours and spots at Falls Festival, Groovin' the Moo and a guest appearance at the star-studded US cult festival, Coachella! This unique singer, songwriter and producer is set to take the music scene by storm, with his debut EP, delicate electro pop Vessel showing that the hype was indeed well deserved. The Kite String Tangle will have you bopping to 'Arcadia', 'Stone Cold' and more, so you won't want to miss seeing this triple threat perform live!

The Aston Shuffle (dj set) Canberra house music duo The Aston Shuffle are one of Australia's most successful electronic artists, having already performed on stages around the globe and produced top hits such as 'Tear it Down'. They rose to prominence with remixes of hits like Claude VonStroke's 'The Whistler' and Chris Lake's 'Carry Me Away' before releasing their debut single 'For Everyone' in 2007, which was featured in the popular Ministry of Sound 2008 Annual. Since then, The Aston Shuffle have become a regular fixture on Ministry of Sound compilations, mixing entire disc sets. In 2013, the boys supported Swedish House Mafia's One Last Tour and then embarked on their own national tour in 2014. O'Fest will be The Ashton Shuffle's first major event for the year, so don't miss out on their DJ set‌ they'll be sure to have you shaking your booty in no time!

The Griswolds On the back of their last tour with The Kooks, The Griswolds are now set to hit the O'Fest stage! With the release of their debut album, Be Impressive, these newcomers move into the Australian spotlight, and have the impressive feat of cracking the top 20 US Alternative Charts as one of their career highlights thus far. The self-proclaimed "tequilainspired-party-pop" indie rockers are known to be an energetic live band, with performances at SXSW (South by South-West Festival), Big Day Out and Parklife standing out. 2015 is set to be a big year for The Griswolds. Not only will they be rocking it out at O'Fest, but they'll also be embarking on a three month American tour with U.S. local heavy weights Walk the Moon.

Tkay Maidza The new queen of modern mixtapes, rapper and producer Tkay Maidza will be a must-see at O'Fest! Last year saw the release of her breakout tracks 'Switch Lanes' and 'U-Huh', which together totalled over 200,000 plays on SoundCloud alone. Some of Tkay Maidza's biggest achievements to date include playing alongside Aussie boy and previous O'Fest performer Illy for a national tour as well as the famous Byron Bay Falls Festival, and she shows no signs of slowing down! This newcomer is one to watch in 2015 - she's scheduled to play at Laneway Festival and has been placed on Spotify's prestigious "Emerging Stars" list.

Ever heard of Susan Rosen and Steinmetz? This designer duo are the creators of the most expensive bikini in the world, with a giant price tag of $30 million. $30 MILLION!? The design features more than 150 carats of flawless diamonds and some of the rarest diamonds in the world. Sports Illustrated gave this teeny tiny itsy bitsy bikini the cover of their 2006 Swimsuit issue, adorned by model Molly Sims.

Sick and tired of your standard black or white iPhone? Well, for a cool $15 million, you can get your hands on the Black Diamond iPhone 5. This blingy phone features a solid gold chassis with 600 white diamonds lining the edges. However, its most extravagant feature is its home button - a 26 carat black diamond that actually works as a home button!

A spare $191,000 these days can buy you the Cruden Hexatech racing simulator, replicating Formula One and NASCAR racing to a tee! The simulator removes any of the danger but keeps all of the thrill. The hydraulic tripod chassis setup recreates the g-force feeling and its effects of turning a corner in a real-life high-end race car. Not happy with the standard race car? most expensive cocktail

most expensive sneakers

most expensive burger

You better drink wisely with this one! The most expensive cocktail in the world is a lavish mix of Hangar 1 vodka, St Germaine liqueur, pomegranate, grapefruit juice and rosewater, then garnished with a four-carat ruby. You can find the 'Ruby Rose' cocktail at The White Barn Inn in Maine, USA for $40 grand! A special mention must also be made of Melbourne Crown Casino's Club 23, whose cocktail 'The Winston' sells for a whopping $12,040! This drink takes 2 days to prepare, mixing Cognac Croizet's famous cognac from the year 1858 (which is about $6,000 per shot!), Grand Marnier Quintessence liqueur, Chartreuse Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolonge, bitters, served with a chocolate and nutmeg 'soil', and pulled sugar garnish using the same ingredients. Oh, and let's not forget the dry ice essence infused with citrus and spices. Woah!

Although not the most futuristic or unobtainable, the Nike Dunk High Pro SB 'FLOM' retails for a whopping $7,500 per pair! Now, these are no ordinary sneakers; they were created by Futura 2000, a New York based graffiti artist, whose career began by illegally painting the New York subways in the 70s (look him up, he's had a very colourful career!) Futura 2000's latest collaboration with Nike resulted in the 'FLOM', or 'For Love or Money'. This rare and unique pair of hi-tops use imagery of currency from around the globe. Dolla dolla bill y'all!

A gold leaf, lobster and caviar embellished burger tops our list as the most expensive burger! 'The Glamburger' took three weeks to craft, and is the highest priced burger in the world, according to RecordSetter. You can enjoy this amazing creation at Honky Tonk in the high-end London neighbourhood, Chelsea, for an easy $2,034. The burger's Kobe Wagyu beef and New Zealand venison patty is seasoned with Himalayan salt and served with Canadian lobster poached in Iranian saffron. At the centre of this delicacy is black truffle brie, that creates a liquid pocket in the centre of the burger once cooked. Yes... there's more - maple syrup coated bacon, beluga caviar, hickory smoked and gold leaf coated duck egg! This burger's humble sesame seed bun is like no other, seasoned with Japanese matcha (a powdered green tea), cream mayonnaise and further coated in gold leaf. Lastly, the burger is garnished with a mango and champagne jus and grated white truffle. To burn off this fancy burger would take approximately 4 and a half hours on the treadmill; it contains a whopping 2,618 calories - more than the daily recommended intake for a fully grown man!

already amused him. Less amusing was the state of his bacon and egg roll. The roll had always lacked any structural integrity and it didn't improve with eating. It now resembled more of a pile and seemed to foil his every effort at handling it. The man, known in his circles as Wolf, brushed his sticky fingers against the bench, looked at his watch and swore. He was willing to give the roll a second chance and stowed it in his leather jacket before setting off at a brisk pace. Five minutes of hunched, determined striding later he found himself at Promise Point. Or was it Primrose? The sign had faded over the years and in any case it was arbitrary. Perhaps Porpoise, or Purpose. He went through all the words he knew that fit the pattern and never found out for sure because Google Maps was giving him the cold shoulder. He approached slowly, and reached into his coat to retrieve what

"That’s a pity," said Wolf, after a long pause. The gun gave a sharp cough and Robert at last felt the wind in his hair, the oppressive morning miasma lifted. He reached out towards her, falling alongside, and just as their fingers touched, he erupted in a violent union of rock and flesh. Wolf, now alone, took a quick look over the cliff out of professional obligation. His gaze was met by dozens of austere, wellmoustachioed chaps and bushy-haired women, judging him from the surface of the ocean. Robert lay variously on different rocks as if an afterthought, crimson blood meeting the green of spilled notes in a macabre Christmas scene. "Now that's getting into the... spirit...of the season," Wolf chuckled. He smiled at the young boy standing beside him. The young boy did not smile back.

The man from two paragraphs ago felt its cold insistence upon the back of his neck and was at last relieved in part from the unbearable warmth of the day.

One simple trick to help you keep motivated and to help burn more calories is to listen to your favourite tunes while at the gym. Various studies have shown that music can help keep you going in different ways. It not only distracts you from pain and fatigue, but also elevates your mood, increases endurance, reduces perceived effort and may even promote metabolic efficiency.

'Push It', Salt-N-Pepa

When listening to music people run further, bike longer and swim faster than usual - often without realising it! In a 2012 review of the research, Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in London, one of the world's leading experts on the psychology of exercise music, wrote that one could think of music as "a type of legal performanceenhancing drug."

'Dancing in the Dark', Bruce Springsteen

Whether you'd rather go for a run while listening to Avicii or pump some iron while rocking out to Metallica, we've got a few song suggestions spanning some of the best musical eras to get you going! We also asked our Facebook community

O'FEST 2015

In Dying Light, a first-person, action survival horror game, players must use everything in their power to survive until the morning's first light in a vast open world filled with danger. During the day, players traverse an expansive urban environment overrun by a vicious outbreak, scavenging the world for supplies and crafting weapons to defend against the growing infected population. At night, the hunter becomes the hunted, as the infected become more dangerous. Most frightening are the predators which only appear after sundown.

Marvel's Daredevil, or simply "Daredevil" , is an upcoming American television series developed for Netflix by Drew Goddard, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. GLUTEN FREE RED VELVET CUPCAKES 425g box Betty Crocker gluten free yellow cake mix 100g package chocolate-flavoured instant pudding mix (Jell-O brand is gluten free) ½ cup butter, softened (no substitutes!) 225g sour cream 3 eggs 2/3 cup of milk

CAKE: 1. Preheat oven to 176°C. 2. Combine the first seven ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix for two minutes at medium speed until nice and smooth. The remaining ingredients are for the frosting, which we'll get to in a sec! 3. Once combined, spoon the mixture into muffin pans lined with cupcake liners. Bake for 16-20 minutes. If a toothpick comes out clean after sticking it in the centre, you’re good to take them out and let them cool. 4. Leave the cupcakes to cool in the pans for five minutes, and then place them on cooling racks until the frosting is all done.

2 tablespoons red food colouring 225g cold cream cheese (Philadelphia is gluten-free) 5 tablespoons softened butter 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 3 cups powdered sugar 1 pinch of salt

FROSTING: 5. Beat (don't whip) the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until combined, and then add salt. 6. Gradually add powdered sugar as you slowly mix until you achieve desired sweetness and texture. 7. Dollop each cupcake with icing and then you're all done! These delicious red velvet cupcakes are ready to be devoured! Heads up: If the cupcakes aren't eaten within 12-24 hours (which let's face it, is highly unlikely) make sure you put them in the fridge.
