it's my first year of uni, what should i expect?! High school is over, summer holidays are finished, a new adventure begins. For many, your time at uni is a rite of passage. Whatever your time brings, everyone will tell you it's probably the best time in your lives, so enjoy it. Away from the books, what can you expect at uni??
You’ve just completed your HSC and must be on top of the world! Some of you would’ve had a great time away at Schoolies, others chilling at home. But now it’s time to make possibly the biggest adjustment to life as you know it: your first year of uni! Starting your undergrad course can be tough – you may not know anyone, unfamiliar with the campus, learning new processes and even trying to support yourself through it all! So here’s a quick insight into what you should expect during your first year of university. We're not going to tell you the same stuff everyone else does. You'll spend most of the first few weeks getting lost and finding quick new ways to navigate campus. But what about when classes are finished, what else is there in this great campus?
O Week
UTS Orientation Week (or O'Week) is probably your best point of contact in terms of an introduction to uni life! Basically it’s a showcase of various social activities designed to welcome you to uni life. It's definitely worth
popping along so you can get a feel for your surrounds. There’s everything from campus tours, to games, to sport events and we definitely can’t forget about O'Fest where there’ll be great music acts to pump your fists to.
that overwhelming feeling
The first couple of weeks of your very first semester can well be the busiest you’ve ever been – your head will probably be spinning at a million miles an hour. During your time at uni, you’ll develop ways to manage your time.
join a club, or a sports team
One of the great things about uni life is the range of clubs and societies available to become involved with. Here at UTS is no exception. During O'Week, you’ll be able to meet with all our dlubs and societies - social, sporting, special interest, political, religious or cultural. Clubs and societies are a great way to make new friends on campus.

libby trickett
we put the hard questions to former olympian, dancing queen and all around nice girl, libby trickett, who officially opened uts o'day 2014. If we did a sneaky in your fridge, what would we find?
If you weren't a swimmer, what would you be instead?
Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables of course!! I’m also kind of obsessed with soda water at the moment, so there is a few bottles of that in there.
I would've been a gymnast or a PE teacher.
what's the last movie you went to see?
I went and saw The Railway Man. It was very hard to watch, but an incredible story of survival and forgiveness. I would highly recommend it! best memory while at uni?
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at uni! I am a bit of a nerd though, so getting my results at the end of semester and realising that all my hard work paid off has been the best part! what was your favourite subject at uni?
So far it’s been Hollywood Cinema. I have loved getting to watch old school movies every week!
how would you describe yourself in three words?
Kooky, focused and determined. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, with whom would it be?
I would be interested to see what it would be like to be Oprah Winfrey, such a powerful and successful woman coming from modest beginnings. If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?
At the moment I am completely obsessed with Game of Thrones, so I would love to be Khaleesi and fingers crossed I would last the week!
Old school Silverchair.
If hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?
fave fancy dress outfit of all time?
I would like either Sarah Michelle Gellar (think Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or Cameron Diaz.
who's your favourite aussie music act?
I went as a ballet dancer to my 21st birthday party. Tutu, leotard, tights, ballet slippers and all! what's your most memorable olympic moment?
It’s hard to go past winning an Olympic gold medal. That’s what we as athletes dream of and to do that at three Olympic Games is more than a dream come true.
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
I would love to fly! If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
With my own wings.

ART VS SCIENCE
ILLY
Sydney three-piece Art vs Science are widely acknowledged to be one of Australia's best and most popular live acts. They have platinum and gold certifications for their two EPs; #2 and #9 entries into Triple J's Hottest 100 (for ‘Parlez-Vous Francais?’ and ‘Magic Fountain’) as well as many others; and a #2 ARIA Chart debut for their ARIA Award-winning album The Experiment. Their raucous energy and undeniable sense of fun that has won over countless fans from all over the country and beyond. According to Triple J’s, Dom Alessio, these guys are “music for your feet”. We’ll let you be the judge!
Blasting his way onto the scene back in 2010 with the release of his sophomore album, The Chase, Illy, is one of Australia’s rising stars. The album unleashed the powerful and well-loved singles ‘Cigarettes’, ‘The Chase’ and the ARIA Gold-selling ‘It Can Wait’ feat. Owl Eyes. The album took him on two sold out headline tours, an endless list of festival bills and scored both ARIA and AIR Award nominations. The follow-up to The Chase came in the form of Bring It Back. This new album was a passion project paying homage to the ever-growing Australian hip hop community. After a hugely successful tour, Illy, spared almost no time, bunkering back down in the studio to begin work on his new album Cinematic, which has been dubbed the sequel to The Chase, and is set to be Illy's, most powerful offering yet and cement his name among the leaders in Australian hip hop.
ALLDAY
CHANCE WATERS
This 22 year old South Australian native is tearing up the Australian hip hop scene with a fresh perspective, smooth melodies and lyrical flow. Blessed with an amazing honesty and creating electric connections with people, Allday's, tunes grow from influences like soul music, indie rock and classic hip hop. As a teenager he began rapping, recording, and taking out battle after battle in his hometown. First EP 'Noue Yesue' captured Triple J's attention with the excellent track 'Girls in Jeans'. A move to Melbourne paid dividends, with the new song 'So Good' becoming the 19th most played track on Triple J in 2012. Part of a new era of Australian hip hop, check out Allday now so you can claim you were riding the first wave of discovery.
Chance Waters is not a typical hip hop artist and his music is not typical hip hop fare. Hailing from the cultural hub of Sydney's inner west, the outspoken vegan and self-confessed internet addict has established a uniquely recognisable brand of hip hop backed by intelligent lyricism and delicately layered production. His music fuses elements from a wide array of genres with pop hooks, harmonies, swathes of live instrumentation and world class production. He painstakingly records and self-engineers hundreds of layers of music into each song in his humble lounge room studio. In 2012 he released the first single from his sophomore record INFINITY - 'Maybe Tomorrow'. This was followed by 'Young & Dumb' featuring well known Australian songstress Bertie Blackman and quickly surpassed the achievements of 'Maybe Tomorrow', breaking the ARIA Top 100 and marking him as one of the most exciting new acts in the country. Always a festival favourite, now is your time to see Chance Waters. Photos top left: Art vs Science Bottom left: Illy

Have you been thinking about giving up your 34 a day habit? Have you sat through dinner with your mates totally glued to your phone? Do you develop a twitch if your phone is too far out of your reach? Don’t worry you’re not alone.
It’s no great surprise that smartphones have taken the world by storm. They’ve seriously changed the way people go about their everyday lives and huge amounts of time are being spent on them. They say smartphones are the latest addiction, with many a new year’s resolution vowing to turn-off the smartphone. Studies carried out around the world indicate some worrying trends about people’s behaviours with smartphones. One study claims that the majority of people who state they don’t have time for breakfast still have time to check their smartphone instead. A particular study in the U.S. draws on 700 hours of video footage from people wearing ‘FishEye’ cameras, which took a picture every five seconds over a threeday period, revealing that those surveyed picked up or used a connected device such as a smartphone, laptop or tablet on average 34 times each day. As of September 2013, 72% of all mobile phones in Australia were smartphones, double the figure from 2010, and up from 52% in 2012. On top of this, half of smartphone users also have a tablet. Young Aussies spend around one month, yes a whole month, of their year with their thumbs attached to their phones. Think about how much time you spend in lectures and tutorials – how much of that time compares to how much time you spend on your smartphone – scary huh?
phones if there’s a lull in the conversation. More than half of smartphone owners turn to their phone rather than sitting around. Have we become a society where we always feel the need to be ‘connected’ to something, can we no longer just enjoy the peace that comes with being disconnected and in harmony with the quiet and our surrounds, must our heads always buzz? 44% of people say their smartphones make their commutes more enjoyable, which is hardly surprising, especially if you are on a peak hour bus on Parramatta Rd or a steaming hot Sydney train on the way to uni! Around one in six people say their phone played a part, whether that’s researching or even buying a particular purchase made in the past fortnight. Where does that leave our instincts or the thrill of impulse buying (guessing there’s no buyer’s hangover either)? No wonder retailers are concerned about the more savvy consumer these days. The question beckons: what will be the next piece of technology to take the world by storm? Google Glasses are due to be released soon, and the latest in ‘smartwatches’ are now hitting the markets so who knows what will be the next crazy invention to catch our interest. fashion march
aking a statement and expressing yourself through your style is what we like to see on our Playground fashionistas. We've wrapped up the Autumn/ Winter runways to bring you our top five fave new trends for you guys and gals. And remember, if your pockets are feeling empty (like ours!) after the post-Christmas sales or that indulgent summer road trip, don’t worry, there’s an array of online stores housing designer inspired threads for a fraction of the price.
for the fellas! This year will see bold prints step it up a notch. Don’t be afraid to pull out that floral shirt your mum brought you back from Hawaii; it’s finally making its way to the runway. We’re seeing florals, polka dots, camo, watercolour and large check patterns. The brighter, the bolder, the better! The timeless blazer is back, this time with extra buttons! Double-breasted blazers will see you take your look from day to night, and make you look like you’ve already got your degree! To add some retro to your get-up, team some bright, neon trainers or canvas, even if you’re not a runner. Fluoro, pastel, floral, animal or block colours. Take your pick! We were re-introduced to the ol’ man bag thanks to “Alan” in The Hangover. Now it’s your turn to rock this brave accessory. Anything goes from a laptop bag, satchel, oversized wallet or envelope style Lastly, don’t be afraid to layer your wrists with wrist wraps, bracelets, watches, and team them with mirrored glasses to finalise your look. Or if you’re a wearer of hats, add a leather or suede cap
for the ladies! The classic crisp white shirt – a warehouse staple - is what you need to start your wardrobe update. We're thinking oversized, embellished or wrapped up with a statement belt. Next on the agenda are bulky, chunky knits. We saw these make a slight entrance in 2013, now they’re here to stay. High necks, long body and warm! Team with your favourite jeans, wedge boots and statement earrings for a look that will take you from uni to the bar in minutes! Say goodbye to those skimpy cut-out dresses, a classier version of the clubbing number has arrived, the knotted cut-out, and involves much more material! Heading to eveningwear now, where extreme splits are making their mark. It all started with Angelina Jolie's left leg, and now we’re seeing more left legs than ever before! This simple cut can take an outfit from drab to fab, and adds a little edge to a printed dress, or a plain black maxi. Just remember, there’s a time and place for that split, and a morning tea at Nannas ain’t one of them! Tweed, checks and (faux) fur are still doing the rounds. They might be too warm for our current climate, but hang on to that checked shirt and teeny fur vest from your teens for when the cooler months arrive.

blueberries, the superfood We all know that the word 'superfood' makes many of us shudder. It must mean that the food is extremely healthy, but tastes terrible (broccoli really isn’t that bad is it?). But in this case, we may have an exception...with the humble blueberry now claiming the title of ‘superfood'! Improved brain function, no wrinkles, fibre, magnesium and seriously yummy? Read on for more on this super berry! Thanks to the high amount of antioxidants and flavonoids, studies have found blueberries reduce cognitive deterioration. This is performed through antioxidants cleaning up and removing dangerous oxygen-free radicals that damage cell walls and DNA, helping reduce your risk of developing Alzheimers Disease. Blueberries contain polyphenols, which combat the effects of free radicals, a key cause of wrinkles, and so keep skin looking younger for longer. They also help the body to make collagen that keeps skin supple.
which acts to protect the heart in the same way as cholesterol-lowering drugs. Blueberries are packed with filling fibre and are an excellent source of manganese, a free element that helps convert nutrients found in food into energy your body can use providing a metabolic boost whilst resting. Just one serving (1/2 cup fresh) of blueberries per day provides 25% of the immune systemboosting Vitamin C. Blueberries really are a nutritious and healthy superfood so whether you enjoy them fresh, dried, frozen, in a tart or a muffin, or juice, these little fruits pack a lot of punch! Here’s a great tip – pop them in the freezer and add them to smoothies for a seriously chilled beverage, or simply have them as a snack on a hot day, they’re tastier and healthier than ice cream (but they will make your fingers purple!).
High in Vitamin C and a good source of fibre, blueberries have a compound, pterostilbene,

Here at ActivateUTS we love a good movie and we thought we’d let you know what’s coming up so you can check them out for yourselves. See you at the flicks!
300: rise of an empire Directed by: Noam Murro Genre: Action/Drama
Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey In theatres: 6 March
Based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield-on the sea-as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. This film pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemesia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
tracks Directed by: John Curran Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver Genre: Drama/Biography In theatres: 6 March A young woman goes on a 1,700 mile trek across the deserts of West Australia with her four camels and faithful dog.
taking it back the mask
the armstrong lie
mr. peabody & sherman
Directed by: Alex Gibney Cast: Lance Armstrong Genre: Documentary In theatres: 13 March
Directed by: Rob Minkoff Cast: Ty Burrell, Stephen Colbert, Ariel Winter Genre: Animation/Comedy In theatres: 27 March
In 2009 Alex Gibney was hired to make a film about Lance Armstrong's comeback to cycling. The project was shelved when the doping scandal erupted, and re-opened after Armstrong's confession. This film picks up in 2013 and presents a riveting, insider's view of the unravelling of one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of sports. As Lance Armstrong himself says: "I didn't live a lot of lies, but I lived one big one."
Directed by: Chuck Russell Cast: Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz Genre: Comedy
Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine - The WABAC - to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes The WABAC out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.
The Mask was one of Jim Carrey’s earlier lead roles, and his love interest Tina Carlyle was none other than Cameron Diaz who was in her feature film debut! Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, who’s a rather socially awkward guy who one night discovers a strange mask. His true comedic energy then comes out after Stanley puts on the mask and his transformation to The Mask is complete. The story sees Tina’s mobster boyfriend trying to use the mask’s powers for evil and take Stanley out of the picture. Although made many years ago, the film’s visual effects help portray The Mask’s popping eyes, insane flexibility and unbelievable speed! It’s definitely worth the watch to see one of the film’s that shot Jim Carrey to comedic stardom! Smokin'!

What a summer! We’ve had heatwaves, awesome sunny days and even jumpers! We’re always looking for great ways to cool down, so we here at ActivateEat.Drink we thought we 'd should share one of our favourite summer green smoothies with you guys. This is a super super healthy, quick and cooling drink that you’ll want to have over and over again.
What you'll need 2 sticks kale Half a banana Small handful of berries (be as adventurous as you want here!) 1 teaspoon spirulina 1 cup coconut water
As far as the method goes, it’s pretty simple! Place all the ingredients into a blender, blend until everything is super smooth and serve! It’s not only a delicious treat but also great for your insides, so enjoy! Here’s a great tip, slice the banana in half, then place in the freezer until frozen (make sure the halves aren’t touching). This will not only make your smoothie seriously cool, but will actually make it really creamy! Don’t believe us, just try it!
