greetings! Welcome to our second edition of PLAYGROUND for 2013! Now that everyone is back into uni-mode or settling into uni-life we thought it was time to launch The Leadership edition! The Leadership Edition is something that has been in the works by the PG team for a while now, so with an upcoming election, military styled fashion in stores and a whole bunch of UTS leadership initiatives that you could get involved in...the time has finally come! Make sure to read about our UTS student ambassadors covered in this edition including The Naked Ceo's Demara Roche, UTS Elite Athletes Chris Dyson and Nick Karlowatz, and Club of the Month - The Big Lift Society. The time has come to get inspired, lead the way and speak up! Happy reading! xoxo Playground

The Naked CEO is a webisode series with Alex Malley, the CEO of CPA Australia. Through this series, Malley gives students an insight into some of the leading business boardrooms in the country, helping them to bridge the gap between theory learnt at uni, and the path to success and leadership. Students are given the opportunity to meet with business owners, handle day-to-day challenges, and experience first-hand the qualities that are needed to be a successful leader. Our very own UTS Student Demara Roche was mentored by The Naked CEO Alex Malley, which then led her to being chosen as the first student to appear on CPA Australia’s first webisode for 2013, interviewing the McDonald's Global Australia CEO, Catriona Noble. After spending time with both Malley and Noble, Demara left her interview knowing that being confident, being herself and getting involved with everything that she can while still at uni helped provide her with invaluable experiences and opportunities. Both CEO’s made special mention of the importance of making mistakes, and the significance of learning from those mistakes to turn a situation around. Demara has said that she now uses this advice to be more bold and enthusiastic when presented with new opportunities. Demara commented that both Malley and Noble pose great people skills. They are subtly observant and adapt their nature to the person they are talking to, or to the task at hand. Demara now believes it is important to be approachable as a CEO. CEO's make important business decisions and need to have an all-round understanding of the people that work with them and the processes of their company. As a fellow UTS student, Demara wants to share her newfound knowledge with you! “You have to be yourself from the start. Talk to people. Don't stop talking and networking! Attend every careers fair you can and make connections. They are golden! Show the world what you can give. In my experience, taking opportunities and running with them is the best thing you can do while at university! Make heaps of decisions - that way they get easier with time. In saying that, extracurricular activities are usually your ticket to achieving those things. Joining societies as an active member, volunteering at events, and

THE JOB TRUTH Job hunting can be daunting for all of us, from filling in millions of applications to attending a series of intimidating interviews. The Job Truth was a free seminar held at the UTS Aerial Function Centre in March for students to gain insight into their dream jobs and to learn some tips on how to succeed. From the speakers, the most repeated word throughout the seminar was ‘networking’. It can be an intimidating process, but you have to put yourself out there. Just remember: stay true to who you are, have initiative, be proactive and be passionate in order to get yourself that dream job. Practice makes perfect, and remember as Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. Sources: Emily Chen and Wilson Kwong

study and sporting commitments so the scholarship makes local housing much more accessible for students” commented Purcell.

“The scholarship is a great step towards promoting the UTS Elite Athlete Program to current and future students” said UTS Sport Manager, Aimee Purcell.

Chris and Nick are no strangers to hard work, dedication and leadership. Both have been representing Australia on competitive levels since a young age. However the boys still know how to have fun, particularly in the social hub that is UTS Housing.

Targeted at students living away from the city, the scholarship provides student athletes with a greater ability to study and train near campus for an affordable price. “The majority of student athletes struggle to find time to fit in a job around their

What is the best thing about being a UTS Housing EAP scholar? Having front door access to the numerous resources available at UTS. In what ways has the scholarship helped you achieve both academic and sporting goals? Academically: The resources available within and around the housing. The Library is just one block away, and there are also study rooms and computer labs available within housing which I have been taking advantage of. Sporting: having access to a high class gym at my doorstep allows me to have a flexible schedule when I am doing my weights training. This factor alone allows me to maximise my day whether it be for work or study and also provides me with optimal recovery between sessions as I don’t have to factor in such a large time frame for my gym and travel time. Name the top 3 reasons why you think students should live on campus. 1. Availability of sporting & academic resources. 2. The social life - there are so many new and interesting people to meet living on campus. 3. Location!! The Sydney CBD is at your doorstep, and there’s a magnificent view on the rooftop entertainment area. What is your greatest achievement on the sporting field? Winning the French Waterpolo Championships in the 2011/2012 season. What does leadership mean to you? Someone who has a great understanding of a particular field, who can react positively under pressure and can inspire, trust and bring out the best in his or her fellow peers.

What is the best thing about being a UTS Housing EAP scholar? The best thing for me is the ability to block out most things going on at home, travel and money and being able to concentrate on the two most important things in my life at the moment which are my sport and my studies. In what ways has the scholarship helped you achieve both academic and sporting goals? My sporting goals are still yet to be tested although in terms of preparation I have never been in such form and feel like I am sure to make personal best in terms of results this winter. As for academic goals I also need to wait for results but by having the campus and library all minutes away its helped me remain focused when I need to be and also grab the help needed. Name the top 3 reasons why you think students should live on campus. 1. I feel like I can fit way more things into the day. For example I can spend the necessary hours on my study while still doing my fitness program and after have quite a lot of time left over to meet many new and interesting people and learn new things, which for me are cooking and guitar. 2. I’ve enjoyed finding independence in everything I do, and feel that since housing accommodates everything, it’s an easy step in terms of moving out and removes the stress. 3. Living with another professional athlete and having the sports office staff around is great as they have been able to push me, and educate me in different ways to achieve my goals. What is your greatest achievement on the sporting field? The is nothing like representing your country in races where only the best from each individual country are allowed to compete, which for me was World Juniors. This was most likely my proudest even though I was not one of the best there. My greatest race was probably winning the National Open Male Champions for Slalom in Australia. What does leadership mean to you? For me it means pushing each other and trying to give strength to someone else while not expecting them to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. To be a leader you have to be someone who people look to for guidance and for that first to happen you have to work as hard as possible and have the knowledge in that area so that your guidance isn’t full of it!

LAISSEZ-FAIRE

DEMOCRATIC

AUTOCRATIC

your result is a Laissez-faire style of leadership! this means you typically allow other members of the group to make decisions. This is best used in situations where group members are highly skilled and capable of working on their own. However, this style is not ideal when group members lack the skills needed to complete tasks, as they do not get enough feedback from their leader.

if you are a Democratic leader, you accept input from group members, but typically have the final say when choices are made. group members tend to be encouraged and motivated by this style of leadership. This often leads to more effective and accurate decisions. after all, no leader can be an expert in all areas!

as an Autocratic leader, you typically have control over all decisions. you like to make choices based on their your judgements and rarely accept input from others. This is best used when decisions need to be made quickly, but people who abuse this style are often seen as dictatorial, leading to resentment in the group.

4D IS A FREE SEMINAR SERIES HELD AT UTS AERIAL FUNCTION CENTRE. THIS YEAR'S SERIES ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT AUSTRALIAN HISTORY, FINANCE, COOKING & GOVERNMENT. OUR MOST RECENT 4D SEMINAR ON COOKING, HELD ON 29 APRIL, WAS LED BY MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA'S AARON HARVIE. CHECK OUT OUR INTERVIEW TO LEARN MORE ABOUT AARON!

Aaron says... SIGNATURE DISH I suppose the dish I am best known for and asked about the most is the dish that Matt Preston threw on the floor a couple years back on MasterChef Season 2. It was a Prawn Ravioli with Chipotle infused Truffle Oil called 'Smoke on the Water'.

COOKING INFLUENCES The chef I admire the most is probably Anthony Bourdain...not for his food, but more for his attitude and take on life. As for cooking I really like the styles of South and Central America, American Southwestern, Cajun, Creole and Italian.

COOKING TIPS FOR STUDENTS ON A LOW BUDGET Shopping on a budget is never easy, especially in the inner city. The best way to save money is to not buy pre-made sauces & meals and cook as much as you can from scratch. It may take a little longer but it's cheaper and tastes a lot better!
