- by Laverne Morgan
So, you’ve got an extra few thou’ ($$) sitting in your account, what to do, what to do? Derr - jump on a plane and jet into the sunset. But where to go? Keeping with this edition’s World Cup theme, we take you around the world to some of the more different-from-your-usual destinations on offer (please note this is an opinion piece only)! Where better to start than the place we call home, Australia! Also probably the best way to keep some of those hard earned $$ as well as having a fab travel experience. It’s easy to play it safe and stick to our wonderful east coast, so why not dip your toes in the other side and head to the west coast. The plane trip is longer than going to New Zealand and thanks to the time difference; you’ll even have some jetlag; all without having to go through customs, (although no duty free shopping). There’s so
much more to Western Australia than the mines. For a start, there’s the wine! (yeah we know, totally tragic that we rhymed, but hey, it had to be done!). There really isn’t much to do in Perth itself, so take a couple of days there, then head out. Heading north, there’s the stunning Monkey Mia, in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, where you can get up close and personal with dolphins. Further north still is Broome; camel rides, natural gorges, watch the sunset on Cable Beach, or go pearling. Closer to home, the next and largest continent - Asia. Now, most of us head to Bali and Thailand (because let’s face it, it’s cheaper!), but what about the other places? Looking for a little luxury, have a few more $$ you want to get rid of? How about Hong Kong? It’s like they bundled parts of London and New York City into one and made
Hong Kong. Let’s get it out there, the shopping is phenomenal. Heading out of the main shopping districts, past the bamboo scaffolding you’ll get to markets markets markets! Temple Street Night Markets, Ladies Markets - ok basically all of Kowloon. Now, if you’re after something more interesting than shopping, head out of the main areas. There are so many temples, heritage trails, ancient villages, parks and vistas to see. If you want to truly see something breathtaking, head to Lantau Island and the Po Lin Monastery and the Tian Tan Buddha statue (known as the Big Buddha). There are literally thousands of people that visit this sacred site every single day. Be warned, while this is a sacred site that doesn’t mean it’s sacred to everyone, especially the pickpockets (yup, this author learnt this first-hand!). Now, to the country that has the world’s largest river, The Nile, Egypt, in the continent of Africa. One word of advice - ALWAYS tip and ALWAYS in American dollars. On to Cairo we go. Ok, so, you’re expecting to see lots of sand - tick. Desert - tick. The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx in the desert away from the hustle and bustle of the city? WRONG! So, here you are sitting in your lovely air-conditioned minibus, crawling through peakhour traffic in downtown Cairo soooo excited cos you’re finally going to see the ancient pyramids of Egypt, then BAM there they are yup, right in the heart of the city, smack bang in the middle soaking in all those exhaust fumes. Close they may be, but totally and utterly magnificent. If you have the time, the night laser light show at the Sphynx is truly worth the wait and brings the ancient history to life. From here, head on over to the world’s second smallest continent – Europe. Really, second smallest – yup that’s right, second smallest, yet they make so much noise, and yup that includes those soccer hooligans! We think here is where your decision making will be the most difficult... where to go, where to go? Who of them all is the most soccer mad? England? Italy? Spain? Germany? So, we did a bit of research to see who invented soccer and apparently it could’ve been anyone from the Egyptians, to the Chinese, Greeks or Romans! We’re sure there are plenty of other nations that will take credit. But to help
us on our travel around the world, let’s pick one of the nations in the European continent that may have invented this world game - Greece. So let’s start with Athens! The heart and soul of Greece. Again, another city full of culture, truly awesome food, seriously cool buildings, and what do you know – markets (anyone seeing a pattern?!). Now, if you want to see more of this beautiful country head out of the capital, there’s more ruins, olive trees, spanakopita (that’s cheese and spinach pie) and more donkeys than you can shake a stick - or vine - at! Visit Olympia, which of course is the home of the Olympics; Meteora, home of the Monasteries in the sky; or Delphi, home of the gods (well, the Temple of Apollo at least) one of the most magical and mystical places you’ll ever visit. Now let’s get to those islands. There are 6,000 to choose from, although only 227 are inhabited. There’s the usual suspects, Mykonos - ie the party island; Santorini - ie the famous one with the white houses and blue domes that every house in the 90s had a picture of; and then there’s the biggie - Crete (actually made up of four islands). Heraklion is the biggest in this set of four and home to a truly cool castle and walled city (by the way, you can buy some of the best jewelry here!). No matter where you go in Greece you’ll have a food and fun festival! So, we’ve come to the end, we’ve totally run out of space; and we’re not even finished with all of the continents! There’s still North America (New York, Vegas, San Fran, Hawaii - your usual suspects), South America (home of this year’s World Cup of course!) or even the Arctic and Antarctic (maybe just check these out on Discovery and decide for yourself). Whatever your plans, enjoy your travels, keep safe, pack light (our suggestion is to lie all of your clothes flat to fit more in!), declare everything at customs, take heaps of photos, visit the Travel Dr for your shots and most all have the time of your life!

In 1990 he almost took an even poorer Argentine side to victory in the World Cup. In 1994 he tested positive for the use of drugs, which has plagued him since he became addicted to cocaine while playing for Napoli. Despite his controversies, he was still undoubtedly one of the greatest players to play the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Pele, has always remained a true ambassador of the game. Making his club debut for Santos at the age of 15 in 1956, he remained with the club until 1974. His ridiculous 1281 goals in all competitions show his greatness. He helped lead Santos to nine State Championships, and claimed two consecutive World Club Championships in 1962 and 1963.
This young man is already arguably the best soccer player who ever lived. They said he was too tiny - at 13 he was only 1.4m tall. Luckily Barcelona was persuaded to invite him for a trial game, in which Messi scored five goals and the rest is history, and what’s scary is that he’s only 26.
Zidane’s head defined two separate World Cup finals, with two headers in 1998, and with a headbutt in 2006 that got him sent off in what turned out to be his last match ever.
Cristiano Ronaldo is not the most successful player of this generation, but he is probably the most complete: a goalscorer, dribbler, and strongman all in one.
He made his debut for France at 22 and scored two goals. He then joined Juventus, where he won the Italian league but lost two Champions He also has the good fortune League finals. At just 18, in an exhibition match with Sporting Lisbon against Manchester United, Ronaldo impressed so much so that many of the United players pleaded for Sir Alex Ferguson to sign him. It would be tough to replace United’s old #7, the one and only Becks, but soon, their new #7 had made all the faithful forget about him. He started racking up the prizes with United: three consecutive league titles from 2007 to 2009, and the Champions League in 2008. He also won the 2008 Ballon d’Or for European Footballer of the year. In 2009 Real Madrid bought him for a then world record transfer fee of $132 million. However, the team he joined was a disjointed one with too many ‘individuals’ and they struggle to match Barcelona. To move up these rankings, he needs just a couple more big trophies both with Madrid and on the world stage.

Chase me ‘round the realm, globetrotter. You have told me many times: “the world is your oyster” but I think we both know that the world is yours, though I am the only pearl worth having. Follow my trail of treasure, sun-spotter. Gilding rays nip the heels of shadow in a race that leaves you, somehow, renewed and breathless. I arrange gold trinkets and purloined jewels on all the rooftops, just so you might find your way by moonlight. Ask after me on your travels, scheme-plotter. Catch sight of me stumble on the Great Wall, and lose me down the cobbled streets of Prague. Speak my name in every accent you know and even in some you don’t. Send me postcards, ink-blotter. Make grandiose statements about wanderlust and brass compasses, about northern lights and southern stars. Improving yourself Pretty much all events, big (such as the World Cup!) or small (your fundraising BBQs, cake sales...), couldn’t go ahead without the help of people giving up their time to help out. Volunteering in Australia goes back as far as the early 1800s, with people helping out during the Wars, The Great Depression and has continued into the present. It’s estimated that there are over six million volunteers in Australia today, so hats off to all of you who give up your precious time! Here’s a list of the benefits of being a volunteer (it’s a two-way street after all!):
Get your foot in the door!
It’s often tough once you finish your degrees to get a job in the "real world", without having some sort of experience behind you. Being a volunteer gives you the opportunity to try out a new career. Want to work in healthcare? Then why don’t you volunteer down at your local retirement home or hospital? Doing volunteer work, although mostly unpaid, allows you to learn some skills for life that are invaluable. It almost acts as a training course! And all of this looks great on the resume and counts to your experience, as well as meeting people in your field of interest.
Some of us are quite shy and have a hard time talking to people, let alone meeting new people. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice this, since you’re in a group of people with similar goals and interests. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a strong support system, which in turn protects you against stress when you're going through the tough times which is very important.
Mind, body, soul...
Volunteering can give you boost to your selfconfidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. You’re doing good for others and the community which gives you that sense of accomplishment.
It's fun!
Most importantly, you wanna help out with something because it’s a fun and easy way to explore your interests and passions! Many people volunteer in order to make time for hobbies outside of work as well. For instance, if you have a desk job and long to spend time outdoors, you might consider volunteering to help plant a community garden, lead local hikes, or help at a children's camp.
What's in it for you?
Joining The Pack is a choice to make a difference by willingly giving your time, skills, and enthusiasm to support and facilitate ActivateUTS & UTS in providing worthy services to the UTS community.
ActivateUTS has its own volunteer group called ‘The Pack’ (bit of a shameless plug but it’s for a great cause!). Pretty much, ‘The Pack’ is the collective name for the army of volunteers that underpin all ActivateUTS activities. The aim of ActivateUTS is to help give the population of UTS the best student experience possible and the Pack play a vital role to help us reach this goal. They help out with ActivateEvents, organise the running of ActivateHQ and help manage the hundreds of ActivateClubs that we look after.
A means to earn CLiCs (points) for your BUiLD program A way to give back to the university community An understanding of event management
where is The Pack based?
The Pack’s Den is in the ActivateSocial office, located at ActivateHQ (Level 3, UTS Tower building on Broadway - City campus). Don’t be a stranger... pop in and say hello whenever you like!
Join The Pack!
If joining The Pack sounds like an appealing opportunity, we’d love to hear from you! We love welcoming student who are new to Sydney and we’re always on the lookout for new Pack members, so join the conversation and apply to join the team. Head to our website for more information. - by Kathryn Hanna
ver the years, influential colours, patterns, textures and fabrics have imprinted the industry and made their way into our wardrobes and onto our bodies. With the introduction of PayPal in 2002, and the explosion of online retailers, especially the ones who were kind enough to ship to us all the way over in Aussie land; meant we could wear items from around the world and straight off the runway without waiting almost a year to see them on our mannequins. The big guns at our much-loved international retailers soon realised how fashion forward us Aussies are and decided to bring our favourites to town *yeww! It began with the US’ GAP in Melbourne in 2010. Soon after, Spain’s Zara, Britain’s TopShop and the US’ Victoria’s Secret arrived, making their firm mark on Sydney CBD’s trendiest shopping spots, as has Sweden’s H&M in Melbourne’s GPO. This year will see French makeup empire Sephora, H&M’s sister COS, the US’s Forever21 and Japan’s Uniqlo open
their doors up to our salivating wallets. Word on the street is that Old Navy, Banana Republic and Marks & Spencer are also on their way, but we can only hope as they are yet to warm our hearts (and scare our credit cards) with a confirmation. But do any of these fashion houses hold their national dress? You would be lucky to walk into Zara and find any Trajes de Faraleas (think brightly coloured with lots of layers and swishy ruffles) or riffle the shelves in H&M for embroidered waistcoats, breeches and felt hats straight from the Swiss Alps. We’ve paid tribute to the traditional dress of the diverse cultures from around the globe and wonder if any of them will make it to mainstream stores in the future; sombrero and clogs - we’re looking at you!

"stop your whining!"
Unusual ways to get in shape Let’s face it - some of us just don’t fancy the idea of heading to the gym and pumping weights to get fit. Some of us would rather jump on the crosstrainer or the treadmill and shed the kilos that way. However, there are other ways of getting the blood flowing in a more fun and enjoyable way. In our last edition of ‘Arnie’s World’, we gave you some tips to keep motivated in winter (and hasn’t the weather reacted to that?! It’s sooooo coooooold!). So, here are some ways to keep that motivation up if you feel exercise can be a bit of a drag. Most gyms nowadays aren’t just all about weights and treadmills. Our gym on campus, ActivateFit on Harris, offers various group classes that can be a fun alternative. Why not join in on a yoga, pilates, body pump or even a Latino dance class to get the blood pumping. They can be cheaper, but also a fun way to train in a group and will keep your motivation high.
The classes combine dance moves with pole tricks involving suspension and stretching - the dance portion gets the heart pumping as a cardio workout, while doing tricks on the pole strengthen your upper and lower body, especially your core. If you’re after something more traditional, get a team together. Playing a sport is not only fun, but a great way of keeping fit too. 60 minutes of playing singles in tennis can potentially burn anywhere between 400-800 calories! If one-on-one sport isn’t for you, why not join a social sports team and join an ActivateSocialSports competition here (keep an eye out for registrations online at www.activateuts.com.au/activatesocialsports ) – it’s a great way to get the body moving plus meeting new people in a team-orientated environment!
Still thinking of trying something more offbeat? If you’re ready for a new yoga challenge, have a go at aerial yoga. This uses the traditional moves while in a large hammock that’s raised off the ground. You’ll twist and manoeuvre your way into stretches while working your core and reducing stress. This one might be for the ladies and no, this isn't about heels and lingerie -- it’s about working out. Pole dancing has become all the rage for women who want a fun workout that strengthens and tones.

Club of the Month
uts capoeira club
What our club is all about
Highlights
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial arts that combines self-defence, gymnastics, and traditional music. The goal of the UTS Capoeira Club is to share capoeira with UTS and wider Sydney community. We aim to provide a positive environment to focus on health and fitness through capoeira, while learning about Brazilian culture and having fun at the same time!
The UTS Capoeira Club puts a lot of time and energy into organising a grading every year: out batizado. It’s not just a grading but a celebration of the progress that everyone has made over the past year, and a chance to show off our new skills before friends (capoeiristas or not)! As well as that, every few years, members of the club get together to go to Brazil and see capoeira in its home country. This is a great chance to see not just Brazil but a piece of Afro-Brazilian culture and history that capoeiristas keep alive.
The club is open to UTS students, staff and the general public, and we welcome capoeira students of all levels. For newcomers, we offer a beginner course to introduce the basic kicks, acrobatics, and music.
Best thing about our club Capoeira comes with a long history and strong roots. You don’t just learn about the martial art. You learn about the music that goes with it - the songs and rhythms that bring the energy to the games; and you get to you learn about Brazilian and Portuguese culture and history. On top of that, there’s the people. The UTS Capoeira Club is a great way to meet people; the students are a diverse group, and the club has strong links to other capoeira clubs around Australia - and other countries! Learning capoeira isn’t just about the martial art - it’s also about joining a network of people who have a great time practicing this unique sport.
contact us!
Quirky Fact Eddy Gordo (the capoeira fighter from the Playstation game, Tekken 3) is not just any video game character. His moves were based off those of a real capoeira mestre (or master). Mestre Marcelo Pereira performed the moves for motion capture - Mestre Marcelo is also a good friend of our head teacher, Mariana Potiguara, and she hosted his stay when he was in Australia to teach classes.
Joining our Club To join the club contact us (details below). The membership fees are $10 for UTS affiliates, and $20 for the general public. Membership benefits include a CD of capoeira music and updates about Brazilian parties and events around Sydney. You can also sign up for a FREE trial class to try capoeira before signing up.

Under the Skin Directed by: Jonathan Glazer
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan
Genre: Sci-Fi | Fantasy In theatres: 29 May
Sure, Scarlett Johansson may be sick of being looked at as a sex symbol, but she certainly is good at acting as one! In her upcoming film based on the novel by Michael Faber, the talented sex symbol actress plays an alien seductress in human form, preying upon hitchhikers in Scotland. So far, this movie isn't exactly hitting big numbers in the international box office, but it sure has received plenty of positive reviews - mostly raving about Johansson’s performance. Plus...it turns out the director, Jonathan Glazer was the guy who directed Jamiroquai’s classic music video Virtual Insanity! Our prediction for this movie: pure pleasure!
Transformers - Age of Extinction Directed by: Michael Bay Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci Genre: Action | Adventure In theatres: 26 June They promised us they wouldn’t, but they’re gonna do it anyway - Michael Bay is back with the fourth instalment of the liveaction Transformers series! This time around, you can forget Shia-The-Beef and say helloooo Marky Mark! Age of Extinction takes place four years after the Chicago invasion, and focuses its story on an older/more kick-ass protagonist, played by Mark Wahlberg. To get the full experience, be sure to check out the sweet propaganda-styled posters that were released alongside the film's teaser (visit transformersaredangerous.com to see more!). And of course, considering the obscene amount of explosions to be delivered in a single movie, the only way to see this in all its glory...is in 3D!
A Million Ways to Die in the West Directed by: Seth MacFarlane Cast: Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman, Neil Patrick Harris Genre: Comedy | Western In theatres: 29 June Not only is Seth MacFarlane the highest-paid television writer of all time, he can now add ‘actor’ and ‘novelist’ to his mega-list of accomplishments. For his acting debut, we’ll see MacFarlane play a cowardly sheep farmer in a comedy full of gunfights, revenge, beautiful comediennes, outlaws, and above all things...LOVE. MacFarlane has also written his very first novel based on this story, which is paired with the film’s release. If you’re a fan of his first movie, Ted (aka the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, earning an unfathomable $549,368,315 at the box office), then you can be pretty sure that this one is going to be fantastic. I mean... can you even picture $549,368,315? No...very few people can.
Shaolin Soccer Directed by: Stephen Chow Cast: Stephen Chow, Vicky Zhao Genre: Comedy | Action | Sport Released: August 2001 Language: Cantonese Get excited for the World Cup with a 90s cult classic! If you’re someone who’s into goofy movies that look awesome, then you’ve got to check this flick out. Expect some over-the-top CGI, ridiculously funny characters, and some atrocious karaoke. This international hit was the biggest success to come out of Hong Kong at the time, that is, up until the release of Stephen Chow’s next big movie Kung Fu Hustle. Be sure to check it out in its native Cantonese with English subtitles - it’s the only way to truly appreciate the WTFness.
DC Comics Batman Eternal #6
Batman Eternal is starting to feel a bit like Game of Thrones. Each week offers a snapshot view of a few characters, only to switch to a different set the following week. Issue #6 is a Batwing issue, and while it’s fun to see him working alongside Jim Corrigan (and facing the always awesome Gentleman Ghost), it’s hard to see how it fits into the main story. We do get a bit of Batman here, but his focus remains on Carmine Falcone and convincing Alfred he’s not sleepy. The art by Trevor McCarthy is a bit of an enigma -- his depiction of cape and cowl type folk is awesome, yet his ordinary human renderings don’t always work. Issue #6 also features the introduction of a new threat, because that’s the one thing Gotham was missing.
Marvel
Dark Horse
All-New X-Men storyline offers readers their first glimpse of the future Brotherhood of Mutants from Battle of the Atom since that crossover ended. It’s an uneasy prospect given how poorly that crossover wrapped up in the end. But so far, Brian Bendis seems to be putting the team to better use now. This issue provides some crucial back-story for two of the time-displaced characters while simultaneously chronicling the latest clash between the two teams, it also serves as a great showcase for much of the younger cast. Bendis continues to explore the troubled dynamic between Jean, Cyclops, and Emma Frost. Beast also enjoys a great moment in this issue, as does Triage as his vague healing powers are explored and defined a bit more.
Hellboy in Hell is finally back after a several month hiatus. If that’s the price we have to pay for an ongoing Hellboy series written and drawn by Mike Mignola, we’ll gladly pay it, still delivering when it comes to mood, tone, and atmosphere, and those elements have always been at least as vital to the Hellboy universe as story anyway.
All-New X-Men #27
All-New X-Men is always at its best with Stuart Immonen providing the art. This issue allows Immonen to tackle a wide range of material, from a dramatic birthing scene to dimly lit, underground battles to neon-drenched scenes of the future Marvel U. Maybe none of the material is quite as epic as what we saw in the “Trial of Jean Grey” crossover, but who knows where this arc will venture before the end?
Hellboy in Hell #6
Mignola chronicles a second encounter between Hellboy and the Vampire of Prague in this issue. Even having been defeated fair and square by his opponent in their previous game, it seems the Vampire still has a bone or two to pick with our hero. What follows is a haunting meditation on the nature of Mignola’s Hell. Hellboy’s journey and the characters he encounters are equal parts humorous and melancholy. And when Hellboy isn’t too busy punching the Vampire of Prague, Mignola explores the idea of hope springing eternal even in an inescapable pit of the damned. As with any Mignola-illustrated comic, the artwork is the main draw. Mignola didn’t draw the original story, “Hellboy and the Vampire of Prague.” So it’s a treat to see him tackle the villain himself. Yet another of Mignola issue showcasing at the top of his storytelling game.

Yup, not even going to try and pronounce these delicious morsels! But anything that has batter and cheese then baked has gotta be good right! What a way to get into the World Cup spirit, imagine biting into these at 2am on a cold morning when you’re getting up to watch the matches! YUM!
What you'll need 5 cups tapioca starch ½ cup vegetable oil 1½ cups milk 1 teaspoon salt 3 large eggs 3 cups Farmer’s cheese
(Queso Fresco, or Cotija), shredded (ok, so if you can’t find these, we’re sure any old cheese will do, the stringier the better right!)
Here’s how you do it: 1 Let’s heat this baby up! Preheat oven to 180 degrees 2 Place tapioca starch in a large mixing bowl and set aside 3 In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil, milk and salt over moderate heat until it starts boiling lightly 4 Now, being very careful, remove from the heat and add to the bowl 5 Mix with a wooden spatula until everything is well incorporated 6 Add the eggs, one at a time still mixing with wooden spatula (you’ll end up with a dough) 7 Add the best bit – the cheese - and knead dough for a few minutes, until smooth (girls, make sure you take any jingle jangles off, otherwise you’ll get dough on them – not cool for cleaning later!) 8 Shape dough into small balls, approximately the size of ping-pong balls 9 Place cheese balls on a non-greased cookie sheet, leaving about ¾-inch space in between them. Bake until golden on top, about 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and serve immediately These are best eaten warm – mmmmm cheeesssssse!
