Club of the Month uts volleyball

What our club is all about UTS Volleyball began with a group of people who just loved playing indoor volleyball and having a good time together. Roughly 20 years later, we are a force of NSW Volleyball, from elite to newbie levels... and still having a good time together!

Best thing about our club In our club, serious competition goes right along with social fun, with many players involved across multiple levels of ability and seriousness. This means we attract the sort of person who wants to improve their skills and also have fun with other volleyballers.

Highlights The club competes in the Australia Volleyball League as a combined team with Sydney University, from September to December. We also host social events throughout the year, like karaoke and trivia nights.

Quirky fact Our Christmas party is always costume...and very few of us do things by halves! The University Games team also had an image of them featured on the popular 'Volleyball Memes' social media account.

Joining our club Open trials are held in February each year, but individual trials are available later in the season when there are spaces that need to be filled. There are also specific trials for the university games teams, and Australia Volleyball League Competition. Otherwise, join us at our Thursday night social competitions and the ‘learn the game’ sessions. Teams train and play 2-3 times per week. PAGE 4

Spring Fever

Fashion S

pring has sprung! The sun is shining, the days are getting warmer and we're packing away those dreaded winter woollies (about time, we say). It's a time when your Nan would say things like "a young man's fancy turns to love" (don't you know it, she said it!).

It’s also time when all the young fellas and fillies (ie chicks) get excited, cos it’s time to get all dressed up and feel fancy for a day. We’re talking spring racing! The hottest and most fashionable time on the racing circuit - and hell, most of us just love an excuse to look all spring fever all of the time. So, whether you’re trackside or not, here’s what’s hot and what’s not! It’s all about YOU - bright and bold! This is not the season to be a wallflower - it’s time to shine! Now this can be hard work, especially for the fillies. Guys, you wonder why it takes them so long to not only choose the right gear but also to get ready, Well here’s the lowdown: trackside fashion requires that every single part of the outfit shines, it’s just all got to work together - hair and makeup, hat (also known as a fascinator), shoes and of course THE BAG!

PAGE 6

The colts' Look The Fillies' Look  Dress for you and your body shape, and don’t forget your confidence and beaming grin- the perfect accessory to any outfit  Channel your inner Lady Gaga - it’s all about the headwear. Vibrant hats, floral features and fascinators will always be winners. Or give the classics a modern twist with a statement floral head band - we’re thinking big, bright and over the top  Glam up a plain coloured dress with huge statement earrings, a jewelled necklace and a blingy ring  Tropical flowers, kaleidoscopes, orientalism and hot colours are the pick of the season with tomato, bubble-gum, lemon, lime and blueberry at the top of the list  Stay classy- if you’d wear it to a nightclub or the beach, seriously think again (we’re looking at you jumpsuits and short shorts!)  Let’s be clear, mixing grass, frocks, a fasci and a few bevvies is not for the faint-hearted. If you’re going to take on the mother of all tasks – new shoes- make sure in your teeny tiny clutch you have bandaids, party feet and maybe some foldup ballet slippers  For the adventurous you can add gloves and brooches; hit up the op-shops or vintage markets for unique or handmade pieces to create your signature look  To complete your spring racing makeover, add some bright lippy and nailpolish. Pick a bright hue that brings out your gorgeous eyes and work it!

 Ok guys, we haven’t left you out, the key here is to remember, channel Justin Timberlake and you’ll be sweet!  Keep it clean! Try boldly coloured jackets or trousers, go oranges, reds and blues, no one will miss you then (you’re not Red Foo so rethink the fluoro)!  We all love a classic white shirt, but why not work it with a coloured blazer or even a checked tie  You're off to the racetrack, not the office, so leave the corporate clothes for a few more years. You’re still at uni, milk it while you can! If you really must go all corporate, be sure to add a funky tie or a handkerchief  When it comes to shoes, the first rule is NO THONGS! We don’t care if they’re Havaiianas. Second rule, definitely no white joggers or white socks! Seriously, this isn’t the gym! Lace-up shoes are the way to go, but make sure to avoid wearing any daggy workboots  Feeling a bit left out cos the fillies get all the accessories fun? Don’t worry; you can work your hat too. Leave the trucker caps and beanies at home and channel Mad Men instead for that sexy add-on  Finally, the suit! Helloooooo colts! It’s all about wearing a wellfitting suit this spring. Be confident and have fun with it!

Spring theme:

The First DatE In a bid to break down all those awkward dating rules, Playground decided it was time to see what students really think when it comes to the age-old “First Date. We headed to The Loft UTS to find two volunteers to help us out. See what Joel and Joel (the lady's name pronounced "Jo-el") had to say. And yes - two Joels!!

Who do you think should initiate the date? He says: Guys She says: Guys Text, call or ask in person? He says: Ask in person She says: Anything but text How much do you dress up on a first date? He says: Depends on the venue, but usually smart casual She says: Depends on where we're going How long do you take to get ready? He says: However long it takes me to manscape! She says: Depends on where we're going Do you have a getting ready routine or a lucky charm? He says: I wear the same cologne I was wearing on the night we first met She says: No Meet at the place of the date or go together? He says: Go together She says: Go together What's a bad date venue? He says: Movies - unless you're a 14 year old couple who want to make out in the dark She says: Clubbing or the movies

Who do you think should pay for the date? He says: Guys She says: Guys What conversation topics are good for a first date? He says: The general history of their life She says: Getting to know the other person, like where they work, what they study, siblings etc First date budget? He says: $400 She says: $50, or as much as you need Goodnight kiss on the cheek or lips? He says: If it goes well, a kiss on the lips She says: Depends on how good the date is!

Who should be the first to make contact after the date? He says: Either She says: Either, but it would be nice if the guy texts first Text or call after the first date? He says: Text She says: Text How long should you wait after the first date to contact? He says: If the date went well I would ask for another date at the end of the first date She says: I'd text to say thank you for the date once it was finished

If you see the Playground camera crew sneaking up behindyou for a chat, don't run away! we've got $10 food & bevvie vouchers to give away to those brave enough to give us their thoughts! PAGE 7

HEY!

I’m Ben Ly, Manager - UTS Fitness Centre since 2007. I’ve been involved in the fitness industry for as long as I can remember, you could say it’s in my blood, growing up surrounded by sweat and lycra in my Dad’s gyms! As much as I’d like to forget my earliest fitness memory of Dad dressing me up in a white headband, tight black bike shorts and a tight white bonds singlet at the age of 8 to instruct a packed Rambo circuit, it always makes me laugh to look back at the photos and remember where my passion for all things health and fitness started. I’d watch my dad encourage people along their health and fitness journey to power ballads like “Eye of the Tiger”, “You’ve Got the Power” and “Don’t Stop Believing” and knew this would be the industry for me. Over the years I’ve found music to play a very important role in the encouragement, motivation and focus on the health and fitness

Warm up

needs of clients. Music is engaging and uplifting and can directly affect a person’s emotional and mental state, allowing them to reach their physical highs.

"Music can change the world because it can change people" - Bono

Music should be engaging, uplifting, relevant, and create not only a physical response but a creative one as well. It should be able to take you away from the pounding of your feet on the pavement to a place where you’re Superman flying over buildings, a famous movie star or lying on a deserted island. See below for some tracks that I like to get sweaty to! Rock on and I'll see you all at the fitness centre. Say hi when you see me! From Ben.

sports news Let’s hear it for Team UTS!

733 Harris St Broadway www.utsfitness.com.au

What a fantastic few months they’ve had!

July saw Eastern University Games (EUGs) success again, with Team UTS taking out the winning title. The Australian Surf Championships also featured Team UTS success with both our Men’s and Women’s teams placing. After a tough week in less than ideal weather conditions, Team UTS returned home from the Australian University Championships - Snow Sports, in August with the coveted "Spirit of the Mountain" award! This award is given to the team that has the best all-around attitude, behaviour and team spirit and is judged on a number of factors that are tallied up across the competition; it's a wonderful achievement for the 40 students that were competing in Thredbo. Taking it up another notch in August, it’s the event that epitomises Team UTS like no other. City2Surf 2013 was again a brilliant day. Over 400 students, staff, alumni, friends and family joined in for what was a spectacular event, in a spectacular location. Once again, the team in teal was a stand-out at the annual event. Team UTS finished second overall out of a whopping 516 teams in the Corporate division. This is the University’s best result ever! The 14km from Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD to Bondi Beach was completed in all forms by the participants, with many running, walking, skipping and even dancing to the beats along the track. Bring it on... so here’s what’s happening as we’re going to print. Following the phenomenal success at the EUGs, Team UTS were kicking it at the Australian University Games (AUGs) at the end of September. Team UTS will feature close to 400 students participating across 31 sports. Keep your eyes peeled around campus to find out if Team UTS reigned supreme. Mid-October kicks off the triathlon summer series. Team UTS will head to Victoria to compete in the Australian University Championships - Triathlon; heading back to NSW to compete in the next stage of competition in early December. November also sees our basketballers head to Melbourne to slam dunk it at the Australian University Championships – 3v3 Basketball. Good luck to all our teams competing and remember if you want to be part of a great sports club or team and make some great friends while having a sporting good time, visit our website or the UTS Union Sport and Recreation office next to Harris Street Café. You gotta be in it to win it, go Team UTS!
