Trippy! Who's up for a magic carpet ride? We can't work out how much of this is actually carpet and how much of it's clever Photoshop work, but either way this country road illusion is impressive as hell. For more, scan the QR code to check out Erik Johansson's "Cut & Fold" video.
Pretty! Did you know that some spiders go the extra mile to make their webs even more elaborate? And for good reason! While they usually use silk, other materials such as egg sacks are also occasionally used. This is believed to strengthen the webs and possibly attract mates.

Speaking of spiders... in 2011 Pakistanis were shocked to discover trees completely covered in spider webs following floods. It turns out millions of these creepy crawlies had taken refuge in the branches and created a cocoon of webbing around the leaves, which gave the trees a ghostly appearance. This phenomenon became simply known as "The Ghost Trees of Pakistan".

Did you know... The owl is a popular image associated with Halloween. But did you know that in Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches? If you heard an owl's call it meant someone was about to die. World War II called for sugar rationing, which actually stalled trick-or-treating from April 1942 until June 1947. "Samhainophobia" is the fear of Halloween. The legendary magician Harry Houdini (1874-1926) died on Halloween night. It's believed that Jack O' Lanterns originated in Ireland, where people would place candles in hollowed out turnips to keep spirits and ghosts away.

Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico 1-2 November, and is becoming increasingly popular across the globe. Even though these dates coincide with the Catholic holiday, “All Soul’s” & “All Saint’s Day”, the indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honouring deceased loved ones. It’s believed that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on 31 October, and the spirits of all deceased children reunite with their families for 24 hours. On 2 November, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them. In most villages, beautiful altars are made in each home, decorated with candles, buckets of flowers mounds of fruit, peanuts, plates of turkey mole, stacks of tortillas, and big Day of the Dead breads called pan de muerto (bread of the dead). The altar needs to have lots of food, bottles of soda, hot cocoa and water for the weary spirits. Toys and candies are left for the children, and on 2 November, adult spirits are even offered cigarettes and shots of mescal! Little folk art skeletons and sugar skulls, purchased at open-air markets, provide the final touches. On the afternoon of 2 November, the festivities are taken to the cemetery. People clean tombs, play cards, listen to the village band, and reminisce about their loved ones. It’s safe to say, tradition keeps the village close. Day of the Dead is a very expensive holiday for these self-sufficient, rural based families - many spend over two months income to honour their dead relatives as they believe that happy spirits will provide protection, good luck and wisdom to their families.

Congratulations to Volunteer of the Year
Richard Setiadi As President of UTS Drawing Circle and Creative Director of JASS UTS in 2014, Richard has worked tirelessly to help make these clubs a hit on campus! Richard has also been an active member of other union clubs and societies (Anime@UTS & ESAC, JASS UTS, UTS TKD), and has volunteered with many internal and external organisations including Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand, Anglicare, and the Australian Red Cross just to name a few.
What our club is all about
The purpose of UTS Hip Hop Society is to share the culture of hip hop and its dance styles to the student community of UTS. Prior to this society, there was no dance club of any kind on campus. We aim to not only educate members about hip hop, but also provide a space that exhibits creativity in dance and to have fun!
Best thing about our club
The society is made up of a variety of dancers of all levels ranging from beginners to the more experienced dancers. We involve our members in numerous events and performances to have fun and build confidence and creativity. Many of these performances have been through the street dance scene in Sydney and also on campus to represent not only the society, but UTS itself.
contact us! email union.infodesk@uts.edu.au
Highlights
UTS Hip Hop Society hosted the largest gathering of Australian B-boys and poppers in the country for Destructive Steps and also hosted the inaugural Sydney Popping Summit, where important issues were discussed within the Popping community in Sydney. Some of our members were featured in mX for the recent Beams Arts Festival. The biggest highlight though, was the achievement of ActivateUTS Club of the Year 2014 at the Annual Dinner which came as a happy surprise to this very young society!
Fun Fact
Besides dancing and hip hop, our members share many similar interests. From our recent events, we have discovered a new side to our members: an obsession with Tekken.
Joining our Club
People can join the society through any of our events and through any of our weekly scheduled classes during the semester by talking to the executive team. Membership Cost: $5 - UTS students $10 - Non-UTS members

The Tower of London London, England
The Beechworth Lunatic Asylum Victoria, Australia You don't have to cross the pond to find one of the creepiest places on earth - the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum (formerly Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum) is located in Victoria, and served as a mental hospital from 1868-1995. At its height, the asylum consisted of 67 buildings and was home to over 1200 patients and 500 staff. About 9000 patients died here over the years, and many of their souls are believed to still inhabit the abandoned buildings, which are now open for ghost tours! Would you be game enough to walk these haunted grounds? You never know what you might see or hear.
The Tower of London has over 900 years' worth of torture and execution to its name. Originally built in 1078 by William the Conqueror, the Tower has had countless reports of paranormal activity, with the most famous involving Anne Boleyn, the wife of King Henry VIII, who was beheaded in 1536. Her headless body has been seen walking the corridors, and near the spot of her execution. Other spooky dwellers include two mysterious children who are often seen in their nightgowns holding hands. The boys are thought to be former princes who were sent to the Tower when deemed illegitimate by Parliament. When they later went missing, it was suspected that they were murdered by order of their uncle, the Duke of Gloucester. Is it a coincidence that two small skeletons were eventually discovered beneath a staircase in the central area, the White Tower?
Island of the Dolls Xochimilco, Mexico La Isla de la Munecas (The Island of the Dolls) is located on Lake Teshuilo in Xochimilco near Mexico City... and yes, it too has a very eerie history. The legend tells the story of three children who had been playing on the island in the 1920s, before one of them suddenly fell in the murky water and drowned. Locals believed that the deceased girl's spirit never left the island, and because of this, nobody dared visit in fear of what they might experience. That is until a man named Julian Santan Barrera moved there to live as a recluse in the 1950s, completely unaware of the haunting...
developed a friendship with the lonely soul. He even sold fruit and vegetables he'd grown to purchase dolls for her, but with time she became increasingly hard to please. The ghost wanted more than presents, she wanted company in the spiritual realm. When Julian confided in his nephew about the situation, he expressed concern over the ghost's intentions. Later that same day, Julian's nephew discovered his uncle face down in a canal - in the very same spot the girl had drowned 70 years prior.
Julian quickly learnt that he wasn't alone when the little girl's ghost began communicating with him. She revealed the story of her demise and how she was a prisoner to the island for all eternity. Instead of making a quick escape, Julian
If you visit the island today, you'll see mutilated dolls just about everywhere. Some say you can hear them whisper to you, especially at night. But the scariest part of it all? Visitors have witnessed Julian and the little girl walk the island with one another - together in spirit, just as she planned.
The Queen Mary Hotel
The Banff Springs Hotel
California, USA The Queen Mary was an ocean liner that mainly sailed the North Atlantic from the 1930s to 1960s. But since the '70s it's served as a hotel in Long Beach, California, and is considered to be one of the most haunted hotels in America. The First Class swimming pool seems to be one particular hot spot for the resident ghosts. Two women apparently drowned there and they've been sited on numerous occasions ever since. Another is the Queen's Salon where a woman dressed in white has been spotted floating about. If you stay in any of the First Class suites, you might just come across a mysterious gentleman dressed in a formal 1930s suit, the ghosts of two children have been seen and heard near the Storage Room, and the ghost of a young woman has been seen wading through the Tourist Class Swimming Pool. Last but not least, if for whatever strange reason you felt inclined to stay in Cabin B340, there's no chance of that happening - this cabin is no longer available to rent, which could have something to do with the amount of supernatural activity that’s been reported there.
Alberta, Canada The Banff Springs Hotel was built over 125 years ago by the Canadian Pacific Railway in Alberta. It was a luxury stop off point for train travellers, and happens to be the home to several ghosts. The first of the resident spirits is a distressed bride who had caught her dress on fire and then fallen down a staircase to her death. The bride has been seen standing on the staircase as well as dancing in the ballroom... and the flames from the back of the dress can still be seen blazing. Another reported apparition is of a former bellman named Sam Macauley. He worked in the hotel during the 1960s and 1970s, and can still be seen dressed in his uniform, often switching lights on and opening locked doors. It's said that if you attempt to make any conversation with Sam, he disappears in an instant. But the most chilling tale of them involves a family that was murdered in room 873. The door to this particular room has been closed with bricks, but the souls of the family are often seen in the hallway outside the room.

Makeup Tutorial
Day Of the Dead What will I need? Liquid foundation in the palest shade you can find White powder and a powder brush Thick kohl eyeliner pencil Thin tipped liquid eyeliner pen Multi-coloured eye shadow palette An eye shadow brush for each different colour you will use False eyelashes Hair accessories Grey/ silver eyeliner pencil Makeup wipes or makeup remover to fix mistakes
How much time will it take? Spend some time researching your look, colours, patterns and makeup choices prior to creating your look. The actual makeup 'painting' will take about 1 ½ hours, depending on your skill, or how accurate you want your look.
Where do I start? Have a look through Pinterest and Google images to find inspiration or use elements from other designs to create your own. Once you have chosen your look, colours and accessories, lay everything out on a table close to where you will work, so it is all easily accessible. Tie your hair up, away from the face and begin with step 1. If you want to have a practice blending colours or drawing lines and shapes, use the back of your hand until you are ready to tackle the real thing!
What do I do? 1 Start with a makeup free face. Moisturise as normal. Blend foundation into skin, and layer as many times as you need to achieve a very white consistency. Blend well under the chin and down the neck; be careful not to leave a solid line. Cover the eyelids, under the lower lash line, all over the lips and eyebrows; we don’t want any natural skin colour showing. Foundation on the eyebrows will assist you in the next step.
3 Using a grey or silver eyeliner pencil, start outlining circles around the eyes. To achieve as much symmetry as possible, step back and look at the face as regularly as you can.
5 Using the grey or silver eyeliner, draw dots evenly around the circles, with an even amount of circles around each eye.
7 Fill in the chin shape with a pink pigment colour, and blend with a shiny cream or white, to fade under the chin (but no further than where the white base coat ends).
9 Redo the colours in the eye circles and blend them up to the newly created black outlines. The black can make the colour look dull, so the more colour the better!
11 Create a triangle on each side of the nose and fill in with black eyeliner. Step back and look at your work from the middle of the face to ensure accurate symmetry and a perfect triangle that disguises the actual nose shape and natural creases.
2 Using a setting powder and brush, cover the entire face in powder. You will need a few layers to achieve the 'white' look. Coat the face all over, including the hair line, under the chin and neck. It is important to also go over the eyebrows with the brush (especially if you are working with dark eyebrows). The whiter the better for this look!
4 Pick the feature colours, and begin filling in your circles. Using a high pigmented colour will ensure the colour 'pops' and is its true colour once on the white base makeup.
6 Using the grey or silver eyeliner, draw a line under each cheek bone, running from the corner of the mouth to the hairline. Draw an evenly spread spider web on the forehead and a shape or swirl on the lower third of the chin.
8 Trace over all grey lines with a thick black eyeliner pen. You may need to do this step a couple of times to achieve a thick line if your eyeliner pen has a fine tip.
10 Outline the top of the eyelid with a thick and heavy coat of eyeliner. Glue a long and full set of eyelashes on each eyelid, sticking them as close to the natural eyelashes as possible. Go back over the eyeliner if necessary.
12 Let down the hair and curl or tease to achieve a big, voluminous head of hair. Add a wreath of flowers, layers of jewellery and you are ready for your Halloween party as the hottest sugar skull out there!

Tips for exercising in hot weather It's now warming up and we have daylight savings, so you can't use the cold as an excuse Chuck Norris runs anymore! And while until the treadmill training in the heat can gets tired. actually be dangerous, you shouldn't let that deter you from enjoying the outdoors - by taking a few simple precautions during your exercise, you can have fun outdoors in a safe manner.
FACT:
It's important to stay hydrated at all times, especially when it's hot. The key is to drink before you get thirsty... because if you're already thirsty, it means you're a little dehydrated. Be sure to keep the fluids up! You'll likely be sweating more, so also replace your electrolytes with a sports drink of some sort (a low calorie option if possible). This will replace the vital salts and minerals that are drained from your body when you sweat. You could even dilute sports drink with your water and sip throughout your workout.
If you're going to train outdoors, make sure you apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn. This is important as sunburn decreases your body's ability to cool down. Also be sure to wear lightweight clothing that will allow your body to breathe. If you can help it, try to avoid the peak times of heat and train first thing in the morning or late in the evening. The sun is at its hottest around midday! Otherwise, pick a shaded area and do your exercise there. This could include bushwalks in the mountains or parks, with trees protecting you in both instances. Alternatively, jump into a pool or the ocean and have a splash - the water will naturally cool your body. For further tips on modifying your workout for the warmer months, feel free to head down to ActivateFit on Harris and chat to one of the trainers!

Scorpio 23 oct - 22 nov Scorpion, you have no rhythm. You cannot and should not dance. But yet, at the stroke of midnight every Friday for all of December, you will feel the undeniable urge to bust out all kinds of ungodly moves no matter where you are. At a club. In bed. On the train. You will bring shame to yourself, your family, and all of those who know you.
Sagittarius 22 nov - 22 dec
Capricorn 22 dec - 20 jan
Aquarius 20 jan - 18 feb
There's a 99.99% chance that an evil flock of bush turkeys will start a "Yo Mama" battle with you on the 30th of October. Be prepared and stay close to your loved ones on this day. Bush turkeys do not mess around and they WILL be highly inappropriate.
Close to midnight, something evil will lurk in the dark, under the moonlight you'll see a sight that almost stops your heart. You'll try to scream but terror will take the sound before you make it, you'll start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, you’ll be paralyzed! Cause this is thriller... thriller night!!
You know *that* song that makes you want to gouge your eyes out? Well, Aquarian... that song will be stuck in your head every day during the month of November. Suffice to say, perseverance is not your most celebrated quality. You will cry yourself to sleep while uncontrollably humming along. And yes, you will be in the foetal position while doing so.
Pisces 18 feb - 20 mar
Aries 20 mar - 20 apr
Taurus 20 apr - 21 may
Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take, somewhere, somehow, a duck will be watching over you. Quack!
Steer clear of all confectionary outlets during early December- turbulent discussions between the Australian Confectionary Board and the Fairies Union regarding fair work and pay for fairies involved in floss production will result in mass strike of fairies nationwide, and violent riots will proceed. You've been warned.
Tread carefully on the third night of the second week of November, for on that night you will encounter a mysterious man bringing upon you nothing but ill fortune. Believe it or not, what you've just read is absolute bull.
Gemini 21 may - 21 jun
Cancer 21 jun - 22 jul
Leo 22 jul - 23 aug
Everyone loves a Gemini because of their wit, curiosity and split personalities. You see yourself as a sophisticated Marilyn Monroe / Johnny Depp type, but are becoming more and more like Snookie and The Situation. Around 24 November, your secret One Direction obsession will take over, and you will only remember lyrics to "That's What Makes You Beautiful" during your 101 exam.
On the 1st of November, you will receive a phone call from a strange man who will pose you a very important question: whether you would rather have terrible B-O... or crabs. Be sure to choose wisely.
In mid-November, you'll find yourself hopelessly attracted to someone who wears sunnies at night-time, and thick jumpers in hot weather. You'll recognise this person instantly because they will smell like the worst smell you've ever smelt. So bad that it will hurt your nose... and your mouth... and your heart.
Virgo 23 aug - 23 sep
Libra 23 sep - 23 oct
Your inner gangsta cannot contain itself and your thoughts are consumed by perms, grills and reggae. In a moment of weakness around 19 November, you will walk yourself to the hairdresser, confidently sit in the chair for six hours but walk out feeling like Justin Timberlake, circa 1998. There is no greater evil.
There’s something strange in your neighbourhood, there's something weird and it don't look good, if you start seeing things running through your head, there might be an invisible man, sleeping in your bed, Oh, you who you gonna call...

Trippz Michaud Trippz is a homage to the liquidity of genre that is growing increasingly present in the digital music realm. He describes himself as a blend of indie pop and hip hop and that's likely the best description you'll get of this left-of-centre artist. yummy Spiders! So delicious and very simple: Just place a big scoop of vanilla ice-cream into a tall glass, and pour your favourite fizzy drink over the top! This works best with creaming soda, Passiona, Coke or lemonade.
1 Microwave chocolate and peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds, and then mix the melted ingredients well.
1 packet of Asian fried noodles
2 Add noodles to the chocolate mix and make sure they're completely coated.
2 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter
3 Spoon the mixture with a teaspoon onto a tray with baking paper, one little guy at a time.
200g cooking chocolate, either dark or milk
4 Place the tray into the fridge until set. You can keep the spiders refrigerated in a sealed container for up to two weeks, or in the freezer for even longer.
