At the ActivateUTS Annual Dinner in September, the Chancellor's Volunteer of the Year Award was awarded to UTS student Sharon Chin. Sharon's commitment to volunteering both on and off campus made her a well deserving recipient of this year's prestigious award. Sharon is a major contributor to the UTS community through her volunteer work at UTS: SOUL Award - a social leadership and volunteer program for students. She also gives over 20 hours of her week to volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, the Starlight Express Room and Sydney Eye Hospital, making her a fantastic student ambassador. Sharon's empathy with everyone she interacts with, particularly with children, is exemplary. Her friendly nature, coupled with her willingness to support those around her, makes her a truly valuable addition to the volunteering community. Sharon is also an active member of The Big Lift and BUiLD Student Society, both of which are focussed on voluntary work. So far this year, she has participated in collaboration with UTS on the National Tree Day and CragCare events. Congratulations to Sharon! We are so proud to have you as part of the UTS community!

This year's ActivateUTS Club of the Year Award was given to the UTS Society of Communications, who have grown dramatically over the last year. UTSoC is now one of ActivateUTS' biggest clubs and this year has engaged over 500 students as members, with almost 3,000 likes on their Facebook page. The club has created a first year engagement strategy and a mentoring program within the society, to support and encourage communications students with their studies. Always willing to get involved, we're so lucky to have UTSoC working collaboratively with us at ActivateUTS - promoting and co-hosting events, promoting our services through their publications, participating (and coming second!) in the ActivateSport Interfaculty Club Competition, and writing for this very magazine, Playground ! UTSoC are supportive of Life on Campus and this year have hosted soireĂŠs, parties, networking nights and general catch-ups in multiple areas of the University, designed to continually engage with their 500+ members. Congratulations to the UTS Society of Communications!

UTSoC is hosting another influential Careers Night this October!

We've got an amazing line up of speakers, not to mention drinks, canapĂŠs, and networking. Keep an eye out for the official event on the UTSoC Facebook page for bookings and keynote speakers!

You can sign up to UTSoC for a measly $5 through the ActivateUTS website, the UTSoC Facebook page or by simply attending one of their events.

With summer fast approaching, we're all starting to fantasise about how we'd love to spend our holidays. Yours may include getting a tan on the beach, throwing a bbq with some mates, maybe playing a board game or two... but not for all. Here's a tiny glimpse into the lives of the world's filthy rich kids and what they get up to on their holidays (which, by the looks of it, is a pretty regular occurrence). Opulent, excessive, and unapologetic in their boastfulness - we can only dream of some of the things these young people post on Instagram! For more absurd and over the top pics, check out The Rich Kids of Instagram.

Expensive modes of transport, giant bottles of booze, waterrelated activities, and pooches on private planes. If you were one of these kids... how would you waste your money?

Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, and has been since 1810! Here’s a fun fact though - it actually commences in late September, and runs for 16 days. It's now celebrated around the world though with each country adapting their own take on it, so everyone can release their inner Bavarians!

1. Drink some beer 2. Dress up in your nicest dirndl or lederhosen (or cheap alternatives from eBay will also do the trick - let's be honest, the next time you will wear it will be next October) 3. More beer 4. Und beer... 5. Und beer! 6. Dine on some hendl, schweinebraten, wurstl accompanied with some brazen, knodel, reiberdatschi and who could forget, sauerkraut! 7. Und beer! 8. Und beer!! 9. Und beer!!! 10. Head to the Alumni Green on Friday October 9 from 12pm (das shameless plug)

Do you ever find yourself feeling bored with the all uniforms you have to wear? Uni outfits, work uniforms, going-out clothes, exercise clothes... there's just too many rules out there. But this October, we're throwing all the conventions for proper dress out the window and celebrating 'Wear Something Gaudy Day'! This obscure little day was first declared a holiday on the 1970's tv show "Three's Company", and has today become the perfect opportunity to celebrate

individuality. There's plenty of ways to wear something gaudy - just have a look through your cupboard for clashing colours and patterns, anything bold, bright, or outlandish. The point is to stand out, so go wild! 'Wear Something Gaudy Day' takes place on a Saturday this year, so make sure you really make a day of it. You could check out your nearest thrift shop with some mates, take an attention-grabbing stroll through the city, or even host a colourfully gaudy picnic (hint: definitely get some food colouring!)

WINTER. IT'S STILL COMING. IT'S BEEN A LONG WAIT, ONE THAT HAS LASTED WHAT SEEMS TO BE AN ETERNITY. SERIOUSLY, THE FIRST VOLUME OF GAME OF THRONES WAS PUBLISHED IN 1996. IT'S BEEN 19 YEARS. I'VE LEGITIMATELY BEEN WAITING ALL MY LIFE. THE WAIT APPEARED TO BE BRIEFLY SUSPENDED WITH THE RELEASE OF SEASON FIVE. BUT THAT JUST MEANT THAT I HAD HOURS OF KIT HARINGTON TO WATCH, WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CATCHING UP ON THE READINGS I HADN'T DONE THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER. I WAS NEITHER MENTALLY NOR EMOTIONALLY PREPARED FOR THIS TEMPTATION.

SAFE TO SAY THE SEASON WAS SINGULARLY RESPONSIBLE FOR SOME OF US FAILING AT LEAST TWO SUBJECTS LAST SEMESTER. WHILST I WAS WAITING FOR THAT CHILL INDUCING FINALE, I THOUGHT: WHAT BETTER WAY TO DISTRACT MYSELF FROM THE FAILURE THAT WAS MY LAST TORTS ESSAY (SERIOUSLY - SHOCKING), THAN TO WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE SHOW THAT ENVELOPS THE LIVES OF ALL STUDENTS. THE RESULT :

9 GAME OF THRONES CHARACTERS WHO ARE JUST GLORIFIED UNI STUDENTS TYRION LANNISTER

JOFFREY BARATHEON

Of the struggles that have dwarfed you most of your life, uni is one of the biggest. Some of its less appealing features (readings, lectures, class, etc.) just get you down. The pick me up: inebriation. You'll be paying for more than just debts, my friend.

You're a douchebag.

DAENERYS TARGARYEN You are the Beyoncé of the GoT world and the Khaleesi of uni. Beautiful. Powerful. Territorially maternal. But you're so busy being queen of everything that moves, that your presence at events is actually quite rare. The question on everyone's lips: will you ever actually show up?

VARYS THE SPIDER You are the student who somehow knows, and is involved with, everything. Either your brain is actually a biological sponge or you somehow find time to attend lectures. You're on at least five committees, execs on three, yet still have time to finish readings, socialise, and knit blankets for charity. How?

BY CASSEY COLEMAN

KHAL DROGO

NED STARK

Dammit Khal, your luscious locks put Tangled to shame. But you know better than to hide those curls in a bun; your braided ponytail is an effeminate dream. Mondays will never be the same.

The noblest and most honourable of students, you stand out in Stark contrast to the other, more fickle, bodies at uni. You embrace your degree with impassioned enthusiasm and are loved by all, destined for great things.

JORAH MORMONT

But then you dropped out. And we didn’t hear from you again. You're just - gone.

A mormont of silence for this friend-zoned student. You are in allegiance with one of the most beautiful people at uni. They're smart. Sophisticated. Somewhat sexy with the whole 'dragon, mother of earth' thing. But you never stood a chance against the 'horse-faced lord of all' contender. Chin up.

MARGAERY TYRELL You always look impeccable. While everyone else is sporting pj bottoms and oversized hoodies, you somehow manage to look like a poster girl for Burberry circa 1300 every day of the week. Please teach.

JON SNOW You know nothing. UTSoC is your point of call for any communication need. We've got connections, we've got the drinks, and we've got your back. To read more articles like this head to http://utsoc.com.au/blog/

Horror has been one of the most popular genres in cinema all over the world for over a hundred years. Since the 1950’s it was established as the cornerstone of mainstream cinema and in recent times the genre has blossomed into a cult industry with a new generation of followers. The 1920s saw many monsters you would read about like Frankenstein, vampires, hunchbacks, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, come into the movie world. The 1930s released classics like Dracula and Frankenstein, staring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, filled with thrills and cutting edge cinematography it also saw the sequels well into the 1940s. During the 1950s british company Horror Film Productions were well known for producing monster films staring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and many more that were made until the 1970s. The 1960s saw the great classic produced by George Romero, Night of the Living Dead. The 1970s was known as the horror blockbuster era, with much larger budgets and higher quality production in movies like The Exorcist, The Omen, Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wes Craven’s The Hill Have Eyes. During this time sci-fi horror was branching out with films like Alien, The Evil Dead staring Bruce Campbell who was made popular in the horror cult industry from Evil Dead and other cult classic Army of Darkness. The 1980s saw a new wave of monsters such as Freddy Krueger and Michael Myer’s and also sequels from the movies Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Nowadays, Horror has seen old classics released on DVD which has attracted a new generation of fans and allowed for the genre to blossom into a cult industry of it’s own with horror conventions and zombie walks held worldwide, merchandise, special movie screening and is spreading across thousands of dedicated horror enthusiats on social media.

HIS GUIDE

HER GUIDE

Quit horsing around

What a night MARE

Let's face it... on a day like Melbourne Cup day, it's possible that you'll be having a few drinks in preparation for the big race. Whatever you do, try not to make the mistake of jumping on the phone and sending rude, inappropriate or blurry photos of you and your mates to people who don't want to see them, e.g. your mum, your dad or your boss. Unless, of course, your mum, your dad and your boss enjoy seeing pics of you and your mates drunk and in compromising positions (then... by all means, go right ahead). We would also suggest that you avoid posting stuff on Facebook that makes people think a spider is crawling up and down your keyboard (ejfhwer..ewtgwerytwe,. ewqrweq!ewstg!!) On the receiving end, we just don't understand what you're saying.

Sources say (meaning the internet just told us) that the biggest no-no a gal could do at the Melbourne Cup... is take her shoes off. Tsk Tsk. Of course, the shoes you choose for the day will all depend on where you watch the race. If you're on campus, then you're more than welcome to wear your daggiest kicks (if that's what you feel comfiest in). But if you're planning to go somewhere where everyone's dolled up, you might find yourself seduced into wearing something gorgeous, something flattering... something utterly foot-destroying. You already know the risks - if your feet hurt, avoid those beautiful shoes that you love, but don't actually want to wear. Wear something that won’t slice and dice your flesh, and try to be good to your feet. They love you so much.

You're never pasture prime

But I can't giddyup!

So the day is going really well, you're with mates, and everyone is looking awesome in their nice clothes. The natural high of the day is making you feel confident sometimes to the point where you think it's probably okay to hit on a friend. Hmm... sounds strange, but surprisingly happens a lot on Melbourne Cup day. Keep your wits about you - it might be the race that stops the nation, but it's also just a regular Tuesday. Try your best not to hit on your mates today. Unless....

On a day when no one wants to work, you could be in for some serious fun and possibly lots of drinking. If you're one of these people, then always remember to have a drop or two of that scrumdiddlyumptious H20. Lots of people start Melbourne Cup, but not everyone finishes. Water - it's delicious!

Hay, that's a good idea! Melbourne Cup is one of the few occasions throughout the year where you get to rock your favourite light blue, fluro or floral suits. If the ladies are allowed to wear ginormous fascinators, then let's rock out with our coolest and most stylish suits!

You whinny some... and you lose some We understand that we're all on tight budgets - but Melbourne Cup is probably the only occasion of the year where you're more willing to have a punt. Set some money aside (that hasn't already been set aside for booze) for a little flutter - even $5. Don't bet the favourites either - they never win. Put $1 on a mystery trifecta and hope for the best!

Get off your high horse It's easy to get pedantic about the itty bitty details of your outfits if you care too hard. We hear that it's a massive fashion faux pas to wear an oversized / mis-matching hat with your Melbourne Cup outfit. Pffft... not for us. We at Playground encourage you to wear something wild and impractical. Seriously, we have so few days in the year when it's acceptable to wear a humungous headpiece. Go on, we dare you.

Woah, woah! Hold your horses! It's Melbourne Cup day, and for some reason, you are really keen to throw lots and lots of money at the races because you are feeling lucky (even if you're in debt / haven't got money for dinner). We would say that there is an easy solution to this, but there never will be. Just enjoy yourselves, take it easy, don't hurt yourself and try to keep a quiet eye on your funds.

"I NEED A VACATION"

GETTING MORE OUT OF YOUR TIME AT THE GYM KEEP NOURISHED AND HYDRATED! If you're feeling a bit lethargic or low on energy, have a banana before you exercise. It provides you with the fuel you need for a good workout. It's also recommended to have a good mix of carbs and protein to give you enough energy. Remember to stay hydrated as well, so always bring along your water bottle.

OBSERVE A CLASS We've got a great range of classes down at our on-campus gym, ActivateFit on Harris. But you don't want to waste your time in a class that isn't right for you. Have a chat to one of our staff who will be able to fill you in on what to expect in the particular classes, otherwise have a look at the start of a class for 5-10 minutes to see what it's like.

BE EFFICIENT Got a spare 30 minutes in between tutes? You can get the same results in a shorter amount of time by increasing the intensity of your workouts. Doing some HIIT (high-intensity interval training) or super-setting will help increase your strength, as well as your cardio and therefore burn fat faster.

FOAM ROLLERS God this can be painful, but you'll feel so much better for it! Foam rollers can help massage your muscles, help you stay nice and flexible as well as help prevent injury. It's a good way to warm down after a workout.

DISREGARD THE GENDER TRAP Don't stick to the stereotype that boys go to the weights room and girls go to the classes. Especially at ActivateFit, you'll see a lot of guys having a go at our classes and ladies on the main floor with weights. Mix it up - do a bit of both each week.

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK It's always good to push yourself during your workouts, but there are some days where you just can't or you might not be able to push out as many reps as you've done before. But that's OK! Cut yourself some slack - it's good to have some days where you go at an easier pace so you feel refreshed. If you've got some pointers on how you best utilise your time during a workout, we're keen to hear them! Just head to our Facebook page and shoot them all through.

SEE YOU AT THE GYM SOON! www.facebook.com/activatefitonharris www.activatefit.com.au REFERENCES: - www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/diet-and-fitness - www.popsugar.com.au/fitness

AHH!

BOO! AHH!

AHH!

SCORPIO 23 OCT - 22 NOV

Legend has it that all scorpios are actually descendants of the mighty 'Scorpion King' you know, like the Egyptian biopic with The Rock in it. Be sure to look to the stars on the night of the 24th of October, and you will see the shape of Dwayne Johnson in the sky. Believe in his power, and he will guide you to enlightenment. Never stop trusting the scorpion. He's watching over you.

SAGITTARIUS

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

As the full moon rises on the 27th of October, you will feel a sudden rush of blood run through your body. Your breath will shorten as your hairs stand on end. Quite suddenly you will become overwhelmed by an acute sense of hunger, do not fight this feeling for it is part of the beauty of this curse.

Friday, the 30th of October is 'Frankenstein Friday'. It's the perfect opportunity to spend time polishing your neck bolts, brushing your fringe forward and growing a flat top hair do. Those facial scars we've been hiding all these years will become your pride and joy. As for those dark circles under your eyes - embrace them!

At some point this month you'll fly back in time to 1967 when the song 'Age of Aquarius' was written. You'll suddenly want to grow side burns, have lots of body hair, wear flares, floral prints, go-go boots and turtle neck jumpers. Embrace your hippy self and let the horror of 1960s fashion shine through.

PISCES

ARIES

TAURUS

At the start of November, you will have the sudden urge to wonder if your girlfriend was hot like me. You will have the sudden urge to wonder if your girlfriend was a freak like me. Then suddenly, you will get this extremely catchy song stuck in your head and life will be so awesomely amazing that you burst out into a sexy jig.

Your heart skips a beat when a hottie from your local coffee shop slips you their number on your coffee order. Wait... it's actually just the order number. Shouldn't you have realised that when there were only 4 numbers? Horoscope wise, we detect nothing for you - nup, nada, zilch refer to Leo.

We sense... hmm... we sense that you will consume something rather unsavoury on or around the 23rd of October. This is not going to be a very pleasant time for you at all. If we were in your position, we would probably get some Imodium as soon as possible. No bull.

GEMINI

CANCER

LEO

When you think you are alone you may feel a disturbing presence. Look down and you may find you are casting two shadows, but with only a single lightbulb to be seen. Look in the mirror if you dare, your dark twin knows you very well.

Oh sweet Cancer, you are in luck. You will have crabs. No, no‌ not those crabs, you dirty people. Actual crabs will be drawn to you this month and become your loyal servants, answering to your every need. That is... until you cook them and make the most delicious bisque ever... mmm...

Let your inner beast shine through, as the 28th of October is 'Plush Animal Lovers Day'. Expect lots of random kisses and cuddles. There's a chance you'll be stuffed upside down into a child's back pack and passed around a class room by horrific, excited, dirty munchkins. Sad but true!

VIRGO

LIBRA

You're normally a very logical person, but on the 12th of December, you will become completely convinced that the world is flat. Those who say otherwise will drive you mad with rage. Be advised not to engage with any strangers during this time... who knows what you're capable of?!

Do NOT get on any buses on the 8th of November. Seriously, don't! Every year on this day, bus drivers become more attuned to the sweet smell of a Libran. Your Libran smell can hypnotise a bus driver until they are wild with desire. This just ruins public transport for all non-Librans, as bus drivers will abandon all their duties to be close to you. And smell you. You've been warned. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

CRIMSON PEAK Directed by: Guillermo del Toro Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain Genre: Horror | Fantasy In theatres: 15 October A period piece about a sweet, young author who falls in love with a hot, suspiciouslooking man. As fate would have it, the hot stranger inevitably takes the young author back to his place - a remote gothic mansion, full of scary things. Apparently, after seeing an early screening of the film, novelist Stephen King (the all-time master of horror) labelled Crimson Peak "gorgeous and just f!@#ing terrifying. Look out!

STEVE JOBS

SPECTRE

Directed by: Danny Boyle Cast: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen Genre: Biography | Drama In theatres: 8 October

Directed by: Sam Mendes Cast: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, LĂŠa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes Genre: Action | Adventure In theatres: 12 November

Sit back and feel the cinematic heartbreak, as we follow the trials and tribulations of Steve Jobs, and observe his ability (or inability) to keep a healthy work/life balance. Rumours are circulating that Michael Fassbender is tipped for an Oscar for this movie. So he should be... Michael Fassbender is an incredible actor. You ever see him in Shame? So good!

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY, PART 2 Directed by: Francis Lawrence Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Genre: Sci-Fi | Adventure In theatres: 19 November After an epic fail with the official Mockingjay Part 2 poster (involving a very rude word splashed across Jennifer Lawrence's face), the revolutionary Hunger Games finally draws to an end. The nation of Panem is in the middle of a full-blown war and it's up to the 'girl on fire' to save... well, everyone. It may not be over, however, as Lionsgate Films are now talking prequel and sequel possibilities. Ka-ching!

In Bond movie number 24, we see the world's most unbeatable secret agent on a quest to expose the truth behind SPECTRE, a global terrorist organisation. Similar to previous Bond films, Spectre will include an assignment from M, big bad explosions, gorgeous cars in chase scenes, gadgets and gizmos a-plenty, and a couple of heartbreakingly beautiful women in formalwear.

FREEHELD Directed by: Peter Sollett Cast: Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Steve Carell, Michael Shannon Genre: Biography | Drama | Romance In theatres: 26 November For those of you wanting something heartwarming and beautiful to watch this break is the inspiring true story of New Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester. After she's diagnosed with terminal cancer, Laurel fights to have her pension benefits passed on to her domestic partner. With A-listers Julianne Moore and Ellen Page in the lead roles, this upcoming love story is a feature-length adaptation of Cynthia Wade's 2007 Oscar-winning short film, also titled Freeheld.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT Directed by: Quentin Tarantino Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh Genre: Western In theatres: 14 January 2016 In January 2014, Tarantino fans all over the globe lost their minds when the script for The Hateful Eight was leaked. Suffice it to say that Tarantino was pretty P-O'd, and he threatened to shelve the project completely. Nearly two years on, the movie is back on track with a reworked (and no doubt better) script, and finally a release date! This one is set in post-Civil War Wyoming, with bounty hunters, blizzards... and betrayal!

THE NIGHT BEFORE

STAR WARS

Directed by: Jonathan Levine Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie Genre: Comedy In theatres: 3 December

Directed by: J.J. Abrams Cast: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Andy Serkis, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill Genre: Sci-Fi | Fanstasy | Adventure In theatres: 17 December

This upcoming comedy is the perfect Christmas flick for those of you who love a bit of holiday silliness. It tells the story of three best buds who come together every Christmas Eve to celebrate their friendship... with a side of debauchery. As the three 'enter adulthood', they strive to have the naughtiest night of all by looking for the Holy Grail of Xmas parties - 'the Nutcracka Ball'!

Get your costumes on, folks. The latest Star Wars movie stars a bunch of fresh new faces, mixed in with our all-time faves (yes, Han Solo, Princess Leia AND Luke Skywalker are back). We hear that even poster maestro Drew Struzan (the artist who made the famous posters for Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, the old Star Wars episodes and more) came out of retirement to do the Episode VIII poster... and it looks amazing!

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS Directed by: Tim Burton Cast: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Vincent Price Genre: Fantasy | Romance Released: March 1991 This Christmas, let's go back in time to a movie that tugs the heartstrings. In a weird and fantastical world created by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands tells us a story of loneliness, romance and snowfall - yep... snowfall. We see Johnny Depp in his first-ever Burton movie, as a scary-looking man with scissors for hands and the gentlest soul in the world. Burton and famous composer Danny Elfman have both named Edward as their "most personal and favourite work". Nowadays, you can see Johnny Depp in just about everything, but none compare to this. The perfect Christmas movie to revisit these holidays!

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL Cast: Lady Gaga, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, ChloĂŤ Sevigny, Emma Roberts Genre: Horror | Drama Released: 7 October The fifth season of American Horror Story is said to be bloodier, darker and more horrifying than ever. This time, we investigate a series of brutal murders, with all clues pointing to the mysterious Hotel Cortez. Lady Gaga will be joining the cast as the hotel's owner, Elizabeth, and a number of old favourites from past seasons will be back in the brand new setting. They say that after the first week of filming, Lady Gaga threw the cast and crew a massive hotel-themed party at her place and dyed her swimming pool a sickening blood red - a fantastically disgusting idea for Halloween!

MARVEL'S JESSICA JONES Cast: Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss Genre: Superhero | Detective Released: 20 November Things just don't slow down for the guys over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Coming soon to Netflix is the story of Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter (you may recognise her as Jane in Breaking Bad, or as Chloe in Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23). We meet Jones suffering from PTSD after her superhero career comes to a tragic end. She then decides to open her own agency as a private investigator, dealing with cases in and around New York. Also starring in the show is ex-Doctor Who, David Tennant!

BLACKBAR Blackbar is an interactive guessing game that takes place in the future. In the game, you receive letters addressed to Vi, written by Kenty and you know nothing of their relationship. Some of the words in their letters have been censored by the fictional Department of Communication and it's your job to figure out the censored words and work out their story. Hints to censored words can be found by examining previous letters or background information. Blackbar starts off slowly, but as you progress it picks up quickly and becomes quite addictive and fun game.

DUOLINGO Want to learn a foreign language? If so, Duolingo is a great app that can teach Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Swedish and Spanish. SMOKEY JOE AND THE KID

SAN CISCO

Meet the delightfully evil French duo known as Smokey Joe and the Kid, the menacing combination of a Bordeaux-based producer and a Parisian master of Turntablism. Together they transport us back in time as gangsters running the streets of 1930s Chicago, and with the help of their accomplices, deliver a classy mix of hip hop and electro with the groove and melodies of early 20th century swing. Percussion solos played with scratches, beats and melodies banged out on the MPC, everything is performed live, making for a slick and captivating performance. Hard at work since 2011, their Soundcloud boasts countless original tracks and remixes, such as the Halloween-themed remix of 'Don’t Scream' by Chinese Man, who are a renowned French trip-hop collective.

You may remember these guys as our headliners at this year's O'Fest in semester! Fresh off the release of their second album, Gracetown, earlier this year, the Fremantle foursome are ready to take their funky cool tunes around to the regional areas of Australia.

If you fancy a short little getaway up to the Central Coast, then make sure you catch their show! Don't forget to bring your IDs as this is an 18+ event.

SWINDLE

APPARAT

TROPFEST

Meet Swindle, a bass heavy jazz dub band cross electronic act so difficult to define, they have opted to tag most of their original tracks with simply '#Swindle' on Soundcloud.

Berlin based DJ, Apparat is gracing our shores for the first time in 5 years to perform an intimate DJ set at Darlinghurst’s Oxford Art Factory. He's an award-winning producer who needs no intro, who started out doing techno, but now creates ambient music, where his eclectic tastes know no boundaries.

Head to Centennial Park any time from 3pm for an awesome day full of live music, entertainment, tasty food and drink and the premiere of some of the most incredible short films that this country has to offer. The screening of the films commence at 7:30pm but it's great to make a day of it - just bring along a picnic rug, sun protection essentials in case it's a hot day and a raincoat if the weather is not the best! Aerogard is a must too. Oh, and the best part is that this event is FREE too!

Taking live music to the next level, Swindle offer a sound like no other, coupling the raw powerful sounds of brass instruments and live drums over deep and dark baselines. One minute you're hit with face melting bass, then before you know it, you are eased effortlessly into a smooth jazzy interlude, and then 'oooh what's that?' you ask. Yes my friend, you're hearing the sounds of a grand piano solo delivered over tropical bass... huge. Their upcoming album is called Peace, Love & Music, which is the result of two years touring globally. Their Soundcloud features a single off this album titled 'London to LA,' which is exceptionally fresh and our track recommendation.
