Did you know ... Disney stuff?

Forget about singing into your hairbrush at home give your pipes a real workout at Karaoke in The Underground every Wednesday from 6pm!

In the early 1950s Disney cartoons, Goofy had a human wife and child, and his wife’s face was never shown. Hannah Montana was almost called "Alexis Texas", however a porn star snagged the name first. Aladdin was modeled after Tom Cruise. The voice of Eeyore is also the voice of Transformers' Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen).

Thursday Night Live The Underground is where it’s at every Thursday night from 6pm! Join us for a night of comedy, music, a bit of a dance, a game or two of pool, and loads of deeeelicious pizza.

Project Pitch Attention all budding entrepreneurs! Do you have a brilliant idea that you want the world to hear? Then you should seriously consider entering this year’s Project Pitch, which runs from 26-28 September at the Aerial Function Centre. Dates to Remember!

I'm too sexy for this song

Some very, very important dates to mark in your diary for September and October:

Ever wondered why birds sing so much during the springtime? Well, it's not because they're as happy about the great weather as you are. It's actually because the longer days trigger a hormone that makes them want to attract a mate through a chirpy serenade. Love really is in the air... and in the trees... and... well, you get the picture.

September: 22 Elephant Appreciation Day 25 One Hit Wonder Day

October:

Whether you love her, can't stand her or simply want to be her there is no denying the mass fascination over Beyoncé (Bey, B, Queen Bey, Yonce - whatever). Did you know that "Bootylicious” was added to the Oxford Dictionary thanks to her?

You don’t need to have been born with a green thumb to create a gorgeous balcony garden - harvesting your own little piece of earth is a cinch! And not only will you be able to spruce up your balcony with bursts of colours and alluring scents, the potential health benefits (including fruit, veggies and herbs) are as plentiful as the harvest itself.

PROTECTION

Herbs for health

Wind and balconies go hand in hand. To keep your plants from falling and being destroyed, install some kind of wall to protect them. Try a trellis with a tough climber, and think about using heavy pots to avoid the plants being knocked over.

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are easy to grow. And if you’re a bit of a master chef, then there’s nothing better than having fresh herbs at your disposal.

lIGHT OR sHADE? The ideal condition for most outdoor plants is a north or north-east facing position. But if your balcony is facing east or the south, then you’ll need shade tolerant plants. As for west–facing balconies, you’ll require sun tolerant plants that thrive in very hot conditions. So, choose carefully.

How’s it hangin’? Make the most of hanging baskets and pots! These make great use of space, no matter the size of balcony you’re working with.

Don’t forget fruit and veggies! You can grow the tomatoes, carrots and garlic in pots, while snow peas and beans can live very happily on a trellis. Easy and delicious!

Love makes the world go ‘round And helps your balcony garden grow. Be sure to keep an eye on your plants to avoid bugs or pests from eating away at them before you get to! Organic plant food and lots of water is a must.

There were three weeks left of winter when you filled the house with growing things to make the days pass quicker. But with pollen in our lungs each minute seemed a small eternity, so I held you by your hip-bones as we moved in gentle rhythm with the concerto of the earth. We went apple-picking in the afternoons and found ripe fruit under the orchard trees. The air was heavy with the extravagant delight of white teeth behind red lips, of white flesh beneath red skin. We are biting into apple-seeds as we bury them with promise. Here we will be nourished and here we will grow. And grow we did, until each sunset offered us more than the day it kissed goodbye, and even time could not stretch its long limbs around everything we had grown to be. We are going to try it my way this time. So we fill our house with light and music as our seeds take to thriving; reaching ever-upwards towards the blue ceiling of the world. Our vines, too, take to blooming in the hollows of your ribcage and the damp corners of my mouth. Winter has long since gone to sleep but in the dying light of the equinox your eyes are the green all growing things aspire to be.

There are some truly gifted sportspeople out there - from Lionel Messi to Roger Federer, from LeBron James to Serena Williams, from Kelly Slater to our very own Tim Cahill. But perhaps the secret to their success may be that they are creatures of habit. Many sportspeople out there have very strict ways of getting ready or prepared, or must do something in particular before an event!

Here’s a list of the athletes with the weirdest superstitions out there!

Jason Terry Lyoto Machida Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida is one of the finest fighters the world has seen and is currently applying his trade in the Octagon of the UFC. However, he believes he has reached these heights by drinking his own urine!

Jason Terry has been one of the more consistent point guards in the NBA, winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011. A secret to this perhaps is that every night before a game, Terry sleeps in the shorts of the opposing team. We bet this would get annoying if the team changes their strip year to year, he’d need to keep updating his wardrobe!

Stéphane Lebeau Probably not the most recognised sportsman around nor the most successful, but his superstition was weird nonetheless. Stephane Lebeau’s pre-game ritual was to chew upwards of 25 pieces of gum and spit them out exactly two minutes before game time.

Tiger Woods If you look back at footage of Tiger Woods in full flight, he’s more than likely wearing a red shirt and black pants. Woods wears this on the last day of every tournament as his mother told him “his power would be highest when he wore the colour”. Judging by his recent performances, we reckon he might need to go back to adopting this trend!

Wayne Gretzky Gretzky is seen as one of the greatest players in ice hockey history, and he puts his clothes on the EXACT same way every time he hits the ice rink. This is how it goes: left shin pad, left stocking, right shin pad, right stocking, pants, left skate, right skate, shoulder pads, elbow pads, then the jersey (with the right side tucked into his pants!).

"well that hit the spot!"

Personal training is usually associated with the extreme weight-loss shows or rich celebrities who can pay ridiculous amounts for the service. But it can be for anyone - here are some reasons why you should consider PT!

It's time to do something for you Work, life, and family can take up a lot of our attention causing us to fall into "ruts". We eat the same foods, we make compromises and we begin choosing options that may not be the healthiest for us. Sometimes we need to take part in something where the focus is placed on us and the results are entirely ours. PTs will ask you what you want out of your training - this can be as simple as improving cardiovascular endurance or flexibility, not just about losing weight. But of course, it varies between people!

You're not seeing results from the work you are putting in If you have been consistently working out but are yet to see the desired results, a personal trainer may be a good option in helping to design and implement the right training method for your body type. A personal trainer can help you figure out the appropriate level of training as well as the correct exercises to help you start seeing results again.

You don’t know where to start The hardest thing can sometimes be just getting started, which may deter people from exercising in the first place. The great thing about personal trainers is that they can help you maximise your exercise time whilst ensuring you are in a safe training environment. Some exercises can be confusing, so a trainer can help educate you on differing exercise intensities, eating habits and exercise programs for long term exercise enjoyment.

You're bored It might be that you are experienced with exercise and have never had a trainer before. A personal trainer can help show you ways to spice up your current exercise routines and help to keep you motivated on those days your exercise levels are lower than usual. PT sessions don't have to always take place in the gym or just involve weights - they can be done outdoors with a footy, for example, to break it up.

You need to be challenged A trainer can help motivate you past those selfimposed limitations, encouraging you to lift heavier, run faster, jump higher and challenge yourself each exercise session. This leads to greater results and an appreciation for the benefits of support and encouragement.

You want supervision and support during your workouts Some of us can just head down to the gym and pump out a session but sometimes it's good to have someone further motivate you to get the most out of yourself. Working with a trainer helps to provide a safe training environment for you to test your limits every session. You should leave each session feeling as though you have achieved something, even reaching a small goal such as a personal best.

You have a specific illness or health condition Issues such as arthritis, heart disease and injuries can be causes of decreases in motivation and can be harmful to health and fitness goals. Working with an experienced trainer who works with your doctor can help find the right methods to help heal or make conditions more manageable. That’s pretty much the gist of personal training! Head to ActivateFit on Harris (Building 4, next to nourish) if you have any questions. They even have group classes there such as yoga and body pump if that’s something that interests you. Visit www.activatefit.com.au for all the info you need!

As awesome as this time of year is, many people do suffer from spring ailments – the most common is hay fever. A drag to say the least. Seasonal change, cool wind and floating pollen are just a couple of this season’s main causes of pesky symptoms like itchy eyes and throat, sneezing, runny nose, sinus congestion and headaches. But there’s good news for sufferers! There are a range of natural remedies that can help you on your way to good health.

Firstly, up your intake of vitamin C! This will build your immune system and help assist a speedy recovery. Fruit like oranges, grapefruits, kiwifruit, pineapple, and lemons are your best friend in fighting off hay fever. Vitamin C is also found in leafy green veggies. Try chopping lemons and grapefruit, and boiling them in water. Also add some honey to sweeten things up a little. Drink this concoction at least three times a day to see results.

Vaporize essential oils to help prevent annoying sneezing fits and itchy noses.

Boil a large slice of peeled ginger (which has super inflammatory powers) in some water until the water turns yellow. Once slightly cooled, add some lemon and honey. This warm ginger drink will help assist clearing your nasal passages.

Grab yourself some butterbur, which is a plant that acts like an antihistamine but without the drowsiness. Look out for butterbur extract in tablet form at your local chemist.

Eat onions whenever you can! Toss them through salads, stuff them in your sandwiches, do whatever you can to get your daily onion fix… They’re full of flavonoid quercetin, which is a strong antioxidant. Peel away the layers and you’ve got yourself something that’s also antiallergic, anti-histaminic and antiinflammatory!

Avoid processed and packaged foods like the plague. Fresh meals and snacks are always the healthier option, and will make you feel like a million bucks.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (Playstation 3) If you loved Kingdom Hearts on PlayStation 2, then you're going to love playing this breakthrough RPG game in fully remastered high definition on the PlayStation 3! Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX is a compilation of the original game Kingdom Hearts (the version that was previously exclusive to the Japanese market), and Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. As an added bonus you'll get HD cinematic story videos from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, improved gameplay mechanics and PlayStation 3 system trophies. Kingdom Hearts is where it all began. You'll play a character called Sora, and come across many familiar faces as the worlds of Disney and Square Enix collide in your quest to find lost allies and fight the bad guys known as the "Heartless".

Dark Souls 2

The Walking Dead: SEASON 2 EPISODE 4

Dark Souls 2 has been hailed by many as one of the best video games of all time. It features player versus environment and player verses player gameplay, as well as some co-op components. As either a male or female "undead" human, known as "The Bearer of the Curse", you'll navigate your way through mind-blowing environments, and meet blood-thirsty monsters and ghastly bosses in your search for a cure. A mysterious old lady will lead you to a place called Drangleic, which is believed to be the home of mystical souls with the ability to help regain your full humanity. Nothing like a bit of escapism, right?

Earth 2 - #26 Tom Taylor gives readers a very satisfying conclusion to The Kryptonian storyline that has given rise not only to a brand new Superman, but a reinvigorated Earth 2 super team. There's so much destruction on Earth 2 and yet Taylor paints our heroes as having an undying hope for a better tomorrow that's inspirational in a classic superhero comic kind of way. There's also a very modern and intense emotionality to his characters.

The Good: Strong character development and interactions; surprises are plenty as the story twists around each corner; varied and well-paced gameplay; usual appealing presentation and great voice acting; fantastic cliff-hanger ending offers no hints at the series’ ultimate conclusion. The Bad: Illusion of choice is particularly apparent as linear events play out; too little time spent portraying emotion in the aftermath of traumatic events; only around 90 minutes in length. The Verdict: Amid The Ruins really delivers in setting the stage for the series conclusion, creating both expected and unexpected challenges that strike at the heart of fragile group dynamics.

Written by: Tom Taylor Drawn by: Nicola Scott It's hard to tell where Taylor plans on going next, but this issue should have fans dying to know. Nicola Scott has been with Earth 2 from the start, but this issue sees her farewell. She goes out with her usual talent and grace with this issue as she goes all out in bringing Taylor's script to life with beautiful pencils, exciting layouts and impressive acting skills.

mom: SEASON 1 Comedienne Anna Faris plays Christy Plunkett, a single mother of two, who is trying to turn over a new leaf in her life after battling alcoholism and a series of other, well, epic fails. She's a hardworking waitress, and regularly attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings where she becomes reacquainted with her estranged mother, Bonnie Plunkett (Allison Janney) - also a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. What could possibly help bring these two slightly troubled women together? The news that Christy’s teenage daughter Violet (Sadie Calvano) is pregnant sure helps! It's safe to say that Mom is no Brady Bunch... But while it might deal with some fairly heavy issues, the show's tonguein-cheek and completely inappropriate punchlines are sure to have you coming back for more.

Panic Author: Lauren Oliver Published: 4 March 2014 New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver's latest offering, Panic, is a story of fear and friendship, courage and hope... and at its very heart, the need to find a place of belonging in an uncertain world. Panic is set in the town of Carp, which has only twelve thousand inhabitants. It's in the middle of nowhere, and there's not a whole lot going on - until graduation time, that is. The protagonist, Heather, finds herself competing in a legendary game called Panic, which is played by graduating seniors, and in doing so discovers that she's far braver than she ever thought when she finds a special someone worth fighting for. The truth is though, all competitors have a story. And they all have something that drives them to no end - and it's not just the $60k prize money we're talking about here.

Sticky Fingers

Land of Pleasure Album Tour When: 24-27 Sep 2014, 8:30pm (extra shows due to popular demand!) Where: Metro Theatre, Sydney | Restrictions: 18+ Sticky Fingers, fresh off their appearance at our very own O-Fest back in February, are back in the country after taking Europe by storm for the past couple of months! Not to be confused with the Rolling Stones album, Sticky Fingers or STIFI as they are more commonly known as, are a self-described "melting pot of reggae, psych, pop and bourbon". The boys will be touring Australia this month on the back their latest album coming out, "Land of Pleasure" (which was released at the start of August). The Land of Pleasure Tour will no doubt deliver the Sticky goodness that the Fingers are known for. So surrender yourself to the Sticky seduction and enter the Land of Pleasure.

Be Kind Rewind The Maze Runner Directed by: Wes Ball Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster Genre: Action | Sci-Fi In theatres: 18 September We at Playground love an action movie with a supafly cast! In this post-apocalyptic sci-fi, we follow the story of Thomas - a teenager who wakes up in a huge maze with no memory of his former life or of the outside world. Alongside a group of other trapped teenagers, Thomas must find a way to escape his prison and uncover the truth. The Maze Runner is the first book of the best-selling trilogy by young-adult fiction author James Dashner, so expect to see plenty more on this story if the movie hits it big! Starring Teen Wolf 's Dylan O'Brien, the queen of U.K. Skins - Kaya Scodelario, and Love Actually's wide-eyed little drummer boy, Thomas BrodieSangster (spoiler: he’s actually not so little anymore). If you're keen for more, be sure to check out wckdisgood.com to see footage from the creators of the maze!

Directed by: Michel Gondry Cast: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow Genre: Comedy Released: February 2008 This spring, we're in love with hitting the refresh button! And what better way is there to celebrate great movies from the past... than with a movie that's all about recreating movies?? Written and directed by the one and only master of quirky cool, Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes a sweet little film about a VHS rental shop and the odd characters that are drawn to it. One day, a freak accident leads all of the shop's videotapes to be erased, forcing best friends Jerry and Mike to think of a way to save the business, while also bringing a little joy to their corner of the world. Their solution: recreating and re-filming EVERYTHING. The funniest thing about this movie is seeing Jack Black and Mos Def recreate familiar movies in their own homemade way, such as Ghostbusters, King Kong, Driving Miss Daisy, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and heaps more! For all those with a tender heart for classic movies, for homemade movies or just for all things recycling... be kind and rewind!
