Overview of ActivateUTS: Formerly known as UTS Union, ActivateUTS is a non-profit organisation established over 40 years ago dedicated to enhancing the student experience during their time studying at UTS. ActivateUTS supports over 130 affiliated clubs and societies, we also bring together an array of campus facilities including great bars, cafes, retail outlets, a fitness centre, physiotherapy and also student events, clubs and societies.

Overview of ActivateRetail: The ActivateRetail stores are home to all the best purchases on and around campus. UTS students and customers can find just about everything needed to get you through the day including stationery, snacks, opal top ups, art supplies and even UTS memorabilia. ActivateRetail also stocks course notes, uniform requirements, art and design needs and much more.

Overview of the position: Reporting to the Retail Manager, this position is responsible for the day to day customer service and operation of the Towers Marketplace Retail store. This position will coordinate and direct other casual staff in addition to supporting the planning, scheduling and execution of events and activities for students whilst ensuring safety and security of students at all times. This position will be responsible for opening and closing of the store. The position will be up to 35 hours a week which may change subject to notice for quieter and busier trading period as required.

Duties & Responsibilities: •

Ensure customer service expectations are met. This includes greeting customers, assisting shoppers with products they are looking for, answering any queries, processing refunds and also dealing with customer complaints.

Manage all stock control responsibilities. This includes receiving, storing the delivery of stock and stocking shelves with merchandise.

Accurate processing of all cash/card payments and balancing of cash register (with receipts) whilst reporting any discrepancies and problems to the supervisor.


Ensure all merchandising tasks are completed accurately and promptly. This includes creating/putting up visual merchandising displays to best present and promote sales activity, attach price tags to merchandise on the shop floor, keep up-to-date with special promotions whilst working within established guidelines (particularly with brands).

Manage and develop staff. This includes inducting new team members in ActivateRetail, conducting training as required and also leading them in day-to-day duties.

Ensure safe and secure practices are upheld. This includes making sure the store is tidy and clean as well as the loss prevention is front of mind daily (including theft, fraudulent credit cards etc.)

Oversea the retail shop management in the manager’s absence as required.

Assist the retail manager in promotions, business planning, marketing and pop up activates as required.

Monitor appropriate health and safety procedures in area of responsibility

Assist with such other duties, within the nature and scope of the position, as may be required from time to time.

Selection criteria: Essential: •

Previous experience working in a retail environment

Strong customer service and well presented

Team leadership or supervisory experience in a retail sales environment

Experience with financial management of cash/credit card sales

Good attention to detail, organisational and planning skills

Excellent communications/interpersonal skills

Strong administration skills including Microsoft office

Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively with minimum supervision

Good understanding of the youth market and cultural diversity

Understanding of WH&S procedures

Desirable: •

2-3 years’ experience working in retail environment

Some knowledge of or experience in retail point of sales systems and stock management

Current first aid certificate

Authority: This position is subject to direction of the Retail Manager but will be required to make decisions in relation to the retail operations on a day to day basis.

Direct Reports: Direct reports will include casual staff members Workplace health and safety You must work within Workplace Health & Safety practices and procedures; work with due care and consideration to safeguard your own health and safety, and the health and safety of others.

Terms & Conditions of Employment: Appointment will be conditional on an initial 6 month probationary period; thereafter termination by either party will require written notice of 2 weeks’.
