IT’S THE EVENT THAT EPITIMISES TEAM UTS SPIRIT & COMMUNITY ANOTHER CITY2SURF, ANOTHER GLORIOUS DAY, ANOTHER INCREDIBLE RACE AND PARTY AT BONDI FOR OVER 400 UTS STUDENTS, STAFF, ALUMNI, FRIENDS AND FAMILY... Once again, the team in teal was a stand-out at the annual City2Surf 2013. Team UTS finished 2nd overall out of a whopping 516 teams in the City2Surf Corporate division. This is the University’s best result ever! The 14km from Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD to Bondi Beach was completed in all forms by the participants, with many running, walking, skipping and even dancing to the beats along the track. One by one the UTS competitors arrived at the UTS Marquee on Bondi Beach and were individually congratulated and welcomed by Vice Chancellor Professor Ross Milbourne. By 10:30am there was a sea of teal at the world famous beach. All Team UTS participants enjoyed a delicious lunch put on by Aerial Function Centre. They rehydrated with some water and well deserved beers. It was a spectacular day in the sun for all. The team’s fastest male was Dylan Dudley who recorded a lightning pace time of 45 minutes and 30 seconds. Brittany Pembroke, clocked in as our fastest female, with a time of 56 minutes and 47 seconds. Fantastic results! A big thanks to Professor Ross Milbourne and Professor Shirley Alexander. Their continued support makes this event a bigger and better every year for the ever growing UTS Community. Between the delicious food, the amazing weather, great company and fantastic results, the 2013 City2Surf would have to be the best ever for Team UTS!

AUG’S ARE ABOUT TO MEET THE ULTIMATE WATERPOLO SQUAD Whether it be pool sessions, the sweat, the banter, the after workout team breakies or the social outings - UTS Waterpolo have undertaken one of the most impressive pre uni games training regimes we have ever seen. Gone are the days of meeting your team mates on the first day of Uni Games. For UTS Sport, the continued sucesses over the last five years has made our students hungry to be at the top. Athletes such as those in the UTS Waterpolo team have taken pre games training to a whole new level. Sitting down to chat with Chris Dyson, UTS Housing Sports Scholar and Manager/Player of the Men’s team, we wanted to get an insight in to what will make the UTS Waterpolo men’s and women’s team a force to be reckoned with on the Gold Coast at Australian Uni Games. WHAT WAS YOUR CRITERIA IN SELECTING YOUR PLAYERS FOR BOTH THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WATERPOLO TEAMS? “As managers, Sam (the women’s manager) and I both sat down three months before the team lists needed to be submitted and decided on a certain standard that need to be met for UTS AUG’s waterpolo players. Firstly, each team member needed to commit to 2 sessions a week - one gym session and one pool session. This commitment was aimed at achieving a high level of team fitness, team cohesion and dedicated time for team bonding. Deciding the criteria early on and communicating the requirments to the selected players allowed everyone to shuffle their schedules to embrace and take on this commitment.” Chris said
WHAT IS YOUR WEEKLY TRAINING ROUTINE BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE WATER? “We started with a Thursday waterpolo session at Leichart, mainly tactics based followed by a fun social game, plus one high intensiy circuit session at the MPSH with dedicated trainer Fudge Atshan. These sessions were an extremely different approach to training which we had never implemented as a team and let’s just say our running abilities generated a lot of banter. This time spent training together in the water and sweating it out at the gym forged strong relationships and friendship from which our weekly social events stemmed. Now we are not only team mates but good friends which makes playing togehter a whole lot of fun. As the comaraderie and enthusiasm started to build we offered more sessions in the water, and scrimmage games. And although it may sounds pretty full on for uni games, when you’re training and working out with mates, no one actually wants to miss out especially on the post training breakies at UTS Concourse Cafe”, Dyson says. WHY THE CHANGE IN YOUR APPROACH TO PREPARING FOR AUSTRALIAN UNI GAMES? We have recently come to understand that UTS has a large waterpolo community with a lot of talent. And after finishing 7th in the males and 9th in the females last year in Adelaide we all believed with a small amount of effort these results could have been a lot better. Our successful regime has already proven beneficial pumping number one ranked Macquarie University in a training match.” Our organised program has played a large role in attracting the likes of 10 Australian National league players which is a substantial advantage providing depth throughout our entire squad.” Dyson states. WHAT ARE YOUR SQUAD’S GOALS FOR AUG’S? Ummmmm.....to win two shiny gold medals for UTS of course! However in saying that we believe it’s important to have loads of fun in and out of the water. A lot of the the hard work of building a winning team has already been done before we will arrive to the Gold Coast. We just have to play at our best as a team and results will no doubt come!
WHERE’D YOU GO? THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL EAP SCHOLARS TRAVELLING FOR COMPETITION OVER THE JULY BREAK.
