OLYMPIC RESULTS 2012 UTS Students and Alumni: SILVER MEDAL Nina Curtis (Graduate - Bachelor of Human Movement) – Match Racing Sailing Lucinda Whitty (Bachelor of Business) – Match Race Sailing James Chapman (Graduate - Bachelor of Business, Accounting) – Rowing FINALIST Tim Leathart (Graduate - Bachelor of Business) – Athletics 4 x 100m relay. Tim went over to London as part of a 5 man squad for the 4 x 100m relay, but unfortunately did not make the final four that raced.

QUARTER FINALIST Gavin Woods (Bachelor of Business) – Water Polo. The Sharks finished 7th overall, their best result since they finished 5th in Barcelona 1992. This is Gavin’s fourth and final Olympics.

SEMI FINALIST Jo Brigden-Jones (Graduate – Bachelor of Nursing) – K4 500m sprint kayak. Jo and her team finished 6th in their semi final, just missing out on a spot in the finals SHADOW SQUAD Hayder Shkara (Bachelor Journalism/Bachelor of Law) – Taekwondo. Hayder, currently ranked #2 in Australia in Taekwondo, attended as the Taekwondo Shadow Squad member and training partner of Safwan Khalil, who finished fourth overall in the Men’s 58kg event

UTS Sporting Community: Chloe Esposito (UTS Fencing Club) finished 7th in the Modern Pentathlon and UTS Rowing Club Member, Rod Chisholm raced in the Men’s C Final. UTS Balmain Water Polo Club member James Clarke was a member of the Men’s Water Polo team alongside Gavin Woods.

The Match Racing Sailing girls (Nina Curtis and Lucinda Whitty) raced especially well on london, with the Gold medal match against Spain going down to the wire. It was 2 all in the final race (best of 5) – the girls just missed out in the last second, but a fantastic result for the youngest team in the competition. SOCCER SUCCESS UTS Womens Soccer Team WINS Grand Final It was a very successful season for the UTS Soccer Club, Womens Division 4 team. After sitting in 2nd and 3rd place on the table for most of the season and drifting back to 5th on the ladder the week before semis the team only just scraped in. But they proved their talents by winning the semi finals against Lane Cove, sending them in to the Grand Final match against Lindfield. It was an extremely exciting match, UTS scored an equaliser 1 minute before full-time, leading to extra time. No goals scored in the 20 minutes of extra time which lead to penalty shoot-outs. A few good hits and some brilliant saves lead UTS to victory with 3-1 in penalties. A fantastic end to the season, and a well deserved win!

Australian Snow Sports Championships Snow Uni Games will be held at Mount Buller Ski Resort from the 2nd to the 6th September. UTS will be sending a squad of 20 skiers and boarders to compete at the games! The squad is looking strong with quite a few gold medal chances among the team. The UTS Ski Club have their sites set on placing in the top 3 in Australia!

Australian University Games Australian University Games in Adelaide is fast approaching! The games will be held between the 23rd and 28th of September. UTS will be represented in over 20 different sports and will have a squad of over 220 athletes. The Mixed Netball team, Women’s Touch team, Men’s Tennis team and Mixed Handball team are our high hopes for Division 1 Golds!

TIGERS AT THE TOP THE MONTH OF JULY SAW UTS TIGERS RLFC FIRST GRADE TEAM MAKE BIG STRIDES IN ITS EFFORT TO SECURE THE MINOR PREMIERSHIP. The Tigers first grade team defeated traditional rivals and most serious premiership threat Norwest Polecats, 30-16. The second win of the season against Norwest put the Tigers in prime position to lift the minor premiership. The following week, a severely depleted first grade team travelled to the nation’s capital and eked out a courageous 24-20 win against ANU Grizzlies. UTS is now strongly favoured to finish the regular season atop the NSW Tertiary League ladder. The same period hasn’t been so fruitful for the Tigers’ second grade team. A 20-28 loss to Norwest’s seconds and a huge 52-8 defeat to Canberra Cows leaves second grade clinging to the last finals spot. All match reports can be found at utsrlfc.com UTS players who found individual success in July included Brett Watton and Matthew Waugh, who were selected for the NSW Universities team. The team will play against its Queensland counterpart on 6th October and, from that game, the Australian Universities World Cup squad will be selected. Matt is studying at UTS as part of the university’s Elite Athlete Program. The UTS versus Norwest double header on 21st July coincided with the club’s Old Boys Day and was an opportunity for past players and supporters to return to the club and celebrate the spirit and culture that makes this rugby league club so special. The following weekend, the club’s away trip to Canberra was undoubtedly the most eventful trip this year.

UTS Womens Soccer Team , 2012

The Womens Division 1 Team were also successful in making the grand final but unfortunately were not able to come away with a win.

Our mens teams are remaining strong as the competiion continues.

Congratulations to all teams for what is shaping up to be a very successful season.

UTS BATS AFL UPDATE As the season draws to a close the Bats get the engines reving for finals showdown.

PREMIER DIVISION has a season defining game on the weekend against St George and a win will guarantee a spot in the finals.

DIVISION 1 are sitting fourth and are building momentum towards the finals DIVISION 3 AND 4 are guaranteed a spot in the finals. Div 3 looks like being the minor premiers and Div 4 look like finishing the season in the top 2, this will be determined over the next couple of weeks.

DIVISION 5 – Should see this team make the finals in their inaugural year (great achievement for all involved). However, upcoming match against UNSW should lock their spot in the finals.

DA-DUM...DA-DUM...DADUM-DA-DUM-DA-DUM Fancy seeing Jaws up close?

THE UTS DIVING CLUB DOES AND MAGIC POINT IS THE NEXT DESTINATION FOR DOUTS MEMBERS AND APPARENTLY IT’S THE BEST SPORT TO SEE GREAT NURSE SHARKS. Magic Point is a sea cave South of Sydney Harbour that has a big reputation for Grey Nurse Sharks, a harmless and protected species. Magic Point is suitable for open water and advanced divers. Depths are relatively shallow at Magic Point (5-17 metres).

Joining the Grey Nurse’s at Magic Point are giant cuttlefish, sea dragons galore, giant rays and huge schools of yellowtail. The shore diving and shallow wrecks in Long Bay are magnificent as well allowing members to have a few brilliant dives.

The underwater world at Magic Point

UTS SURFERS RIDE THE WAVES AT LENNOX HEAD @ Australian University Sport - Surfing Championships - 2 - 4th July, 2012 Some of Australia’s best student surfers battled it out at Lennox Head at the annual intervarsity surfing championships in July. UTS was represented by a team of 11 students, 9 men and 2 women. The atmosphere was pumping up in Lennox as all students chose their waves wisely and continued to show off their skills in 3 categories.

The UTS men’s team competed in all 3 catagories including the short board, long board and body boarding, cleary riding waves to succes when they wrapped up the competion in 2nd place to the host, Southern Cross University. The women’s team although much smaller definately took their A game up north, competing in both the short and long board categories, finishing in 3rd place to Southern Cross University and RMIT. An outstanding effort for a team of 2! UTS finished 3rd overall which is awesome and with the UTS Surf Club pulling in more members in the lead up to summer, next year the team will have 1st place in sight.

WHAT SETS UTS STUDENTS APART IN YOUR FIELD? ‘I think the culture of current students isn’t just to study and get a degree, but to be business leaders. Many are balancing internships at the same time, and creating networks before they have even finished a degree which is great.’

WHAT SORT OF WORK DO YOU HOPE TO BE DOING AFTER YOU GRADUATE? ‘I could see myself doing something to do with marketing and sport.’

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT UTS BUSINESS SCHOOL, OR THE UNIVERSITY AS A WHOLE? ‘Don’t just see UTS as a Uni, but as an opportunity to network and to get involved in many different social activities. You can make it as fun and engaging as you choose.’

Ever since this boy could walk he could play. Growing up he proved this at his local cricket club, Penrith. In 2010, Pat debuted for Penrith first XI and after only a couple of months he was picked to play for NSW, the youngest player in over 50 years. He then went on to play in all forms for NSW, including playing in the Sheffield shield final, all at the age of 17.

In June 2011, Pat was the youngest ever player to be selected for a Cricket Australia contract and in October last year, Pat became the youngest player to represent Australia in One-Dayers and T20’s when he debuted in South Africa at the age of 18. He was the leading wicket taker in both forms which earned him selection in the Test side for the second test. In the second innings, Pat took 6-79 and hit the winning runs which lead Australia to claim an historic win.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE STUDY AT UTS AND AN INTERNATIONAL CRICKET CAREER? “I have found it easy. Every lecture slide and tutorial question is available online for me so I can stay up to date with work anywhere in the World. Also, with the help of the Elite Athlete Program, rescheduling exams and assessments is easy if cricket commitments that clash.”

WOULD YOU SUGGEST OTHER ELITE SPORTPLAYERS AS YOURSELF TO STUDY A BUSINESS DEGREE? ‘Absolutely, there is always enough time, even if you just study part-time and tick over 1 or 2 subjects a semester.’

WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND? ‘St Paul’s Grammar School’ WHAT LED YOU TO CHOOSE UTS FOR YOUR STUDIES IN BUSINESS? ‘My brother did the same course and spoke of the diverse range of majors. I train at the SCG everyday so it is close to training too.’

The talented wicket keeper and right hand bat, Alyssa Healy is an inspiration to many. She has been a member of the Australian Women’s Cricket Team (Southern Stars) for the past three seasons and a member of the Australian U/21 Cricket Team for the past 5 seasons. Alyssa was a huge part of the highly successful team the captured the ICC World T20 Cup in 2010, The Rosebowl against NZ in 2010 and 2012. The Ashes against England in 2011.

Representing at all levels Alyssa has also been a member of the NSW Lend Lease Breakers Cricket Team for the last 5 seasons The Breakers are the most successful sporting team in the country, holding 14 out of the 16 national titles held including 7 in a row.

Pat and Alyssa will both represent Australia at the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka from september 18 to October 7, 2012.
