MERRY CHRISTMAS

UTS Rugby 7s Team at AUG’s

PERFECT PARTNERS IN CRIME

Gold was the only colour these boys were bringing home from the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast.

With the partnership between UTS Sport and Gordon Rugby in full swing, eight of the clubs talented players and Gordon’s 7’s coach Jason Grier were eager to represent UTS at AUG’s where they played an enormous role in taking home gold at the games. During the week long event the UTS 7’s team were undefeated, with big wins against Sydney University in the round games. The teamwork, strength and domination shown by the team continued all week with a massive victory in the finals, defeating University of Western Australia 35-14. Gordon were represented by Luke Rissman, Jack Dempsey, Ryan Matthews, Tom Matthews, Jack Maquire, Brandon Quinn, Matt Waugh and Mitch Lockley. A few of which stood out as the tournaments best players being awarded Green and Gold Medals. Jack Dempsey, Tom Matthews, Jack Maquire and Brandon Quinn were judged among the top 12 players in the overall 7’s competition. SYDNEY 7S TOURNAMENT The club played in the inaugural Sydney 7’s tournament during October in which the club entered both a Men’s and Women’s team. Both teams put in great performances with the eventual finalists coming from Gordon’s Pool. GORDON PLAYERS SELECTED IN AUSTRALIAN BARBARIANS The Australian Services Rugby Union celebrated its 50th anniversary in style on November 1st, 2013 with the ASRU Senior Men’s Warriors playing the Australian Barbarians. Four Gordon players featured in the Australian Barabarians side - including current UTS student Tom Matthews. Australian Barbarians defeated ASRU 38-17. PRE-SEASON 2014 WELL UNDERWAY Pre-season under new head coach Geoff Townsend (formerly from the Western Force) is well underway. With Townsend’s guidance the turn out for preseason gym and on-field sessions of returning players and new players has been fantastic.

Sarah’s parents attended the awards evening accepting Sarah’s Full Blue Award on her behalf. The evening was not only about celebrating our past athletes but also our current elite athletes. This year there were more Blues Award winners than ever before with 11 UTS Students being awarded a Full Blue and 31 being awarded a Half Blue.

DOUTS New Addition!

DOUTS GEAR UP FOR A SUMMER OF AMAZING UNDER WATER EXPERIENCES WITH A NEW UTE AND AWESOME NEW BOAT.

SUCCESS DOESN’T COME TO YOU, YOU GO GET IT! AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT UTS NORTHSIDE FUTSAL HAVE DONE AT THE START OF THEIR DEBUT SEASON.

and women losing out in very tough quarter finals and the 11 boys showing some great talent in a non-competitive age group.

This very successful start has been the result of a lot of hard work done by a fantastic group of volunteers. They started their season off with a fantastic Open Day down at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen, with a training session and jersey presentation for all players by notable senior members of the club Soner Omac, Josh Yeates, Nic Fisher, Tiarn Powell, Shane Watson and UTS Sport representative Alex Godbold. The day was a rousing success and much down to the organisation and innovation of Cathie Sweeny and Victoria Lynch.

The club then commenced their debut season in the Football NSW State League with a diverse range of opponents in the first 4 rounds of the competition. Highlights being the undefeated Women’s and 16 girls teams, winning all ages against the Greater Western Sydney Vikings and the club sitting in a very strong third place on the overall Club Championship ladder (which takes into account the results of all ages from 12 girls to Open Men).

The club then enjoyed a number of trial games against strong oppositions such as Enfield Rovers, Dural Warriors and Parramatta Pumas with the highlight undoubtedly being the first games for the club held at the UTS Multi-Purpose Sports Hall at the city campus. In the final weekend before the season started, all teams in the club participated in the annual Football NSW State Championships held in Windsor and Penrith. Standout results were obtained by the Open Men’s, finishing as runners-up in a tight grand final, the 12 boys

During this start up period there have been a number of individual successes by club members as well. Tiarn Powell recently signed for the Adelaide United Lady Reds in the Westfield W-League and has also been accepted to study at UTS commencing next year. Beth Sweeny and Bella Walker, who coach our very promising 14 girls team and play in our Open’s Womens travelled to Colombia with an Australian Futsal team to compete on the world stage.

BIG DOG’S BACK! Snow or no snow, it doesn’t matter. The UTS Ski Club are hard at work (or play). Whilst the snow might have been a bit tardy this year, the Ski Club has had their heads down and bums up staying up there as one of UTS’s most sought after club to join on and off the slopes. On the 6th of November the club held their Annual General Meeting with an inundation of first year students and club members volunteering to join the committee. And why wouldn’t they when everyone’s favourite Big Dog, Niall Puren was reinstated for another year at the helm. The club would not have wrapped up 2013 without showing how committed they are off the slopes. Yes you guessed it they hosted one more unforgettable end of year party at Worldly X on Thursday the 28th to celebrate another wonderful year. Finally to everyone who is escaping for the Northern Hemisphere winter, the UTS Ski Club wish you good turns and safe returns.

Asia Pacific Tennis League, UTS City Lizards

GAME. SET. MATCH. The Asia Pacific Tennis League NSW/ACT Conference draws to a close.... but the tennis buzz remains. THIS YEAR, UTS TEAMED UP WITH CITY COMMUNITY TENNIS (CCT) TO ENTER A TEAM INTO THE ASIA PACIFIC TENNIS LEAGUE (ATL) – THE UTS CITY LIZARDS. The ATL is a new and innovative tennis competition that brings together teams of men and women from across the Asia-Pacific region, each of which is comprised of a number of talented players including former, current and up-coming professionals. During the month of November, 5 men’s and 5 women’s teams took to the court in to battle it out for the NSW/ACT ATL Conference Title. The UTS City Lizards team featured a number of star players including Jess Engels, Lucie Kriegsmannova, Renee Beck, as well as our very own Priscilla Soenario and Lejla Husic. In each of the five rounds, the UTS City Lizards put on a spectacular show, making their mark in the women’s draw. However, whilst the girls gave it everything they could, they were unable to conquer the likes of Canberra Velocity and Stanmore Wyverns. The final tally saw the UTS City Lizards placed 3rd which is a fantastic result considering it was the teams first year of competition. UTS Sport looks forward to working closely with CCT again next year to help the girls go that step further and reach the NSW/ACT Conference finals.

TABLES ARE TURNING FROM MEETING YOUR MATES FOR A QUICK PING PONG SESH IN YOUR STUDY BREAK, TO AN IMMENSELY POPULAR CLUB. THE TABLES HAVE DEFINATELY TURNED FOR THE UTS TABLE TENNIS CLUB. The newly initiated UTS Table Tennis Club has undergone much expansion in the last month, recently acquiring 6 new ITTF approved tables for the students as well as greatly growing its membership base. After successfully co-hosting a day of competitions with the Hong Kong Business Association for over 80 people in the MPSH it is onwards and upwards for the club. The club will be hosting handicap competitions, training days for players of all levels and social events in the upcoming months so keep an eye out if you’re interested in participating or to get involved email UTSTableTennis@ gmail.com

UTS FENCING

TRI THE WORLD EVEN THOUGH THE WINTER MONTHS HAVE PUT A STOP TO THE RACING SEASON IN AUSTRALIA IT HAS NOT STOPPED MANY MEMBERS OF THE BALANCE & UTS TRI CLUB TRAINING HARD AND RACING HARD IN EVENTS ALL AROUND THE WORLD. August saw Mike Wood race in the Ironman UK race where he finished 23 overall and qualified for the mecca of long course racing, the World Championships held in Kona, Hawaii. After this success it was time for the Balance athletes to compete in the age-group World Championships held in London. Representing Australia, Balance was proud to have 5 athletes participating. All athletes did exceptionally well, with two athletes Jocie Evison and Cath Chatterton coming 6th and 7th in their age group. Next up for the Balance international athletes was Geoff Evison taking part in the Spartathon held in Greece in September. This is one of the toughest ultra-marathons in the world covering 246km. Unfortunately Geoff was unable to finish but did extremely well considering the tough conditions on race day. September also saw Mike Steinberg, Paul Walton and Mark Eagan compete in the 70.3 World Championships held in Las Vegas. A tough race ensued but all athletes raced very well and represented the club proudly. October and the Ironman World Championships followed with Mike Wood competing as the first Balance and UTS athlete qualifier. Although the race didn’t quite go to plan he finished in under 10 hours. Now that summer has almost arrived the club is gearing up for a very big year of ‘home’ racing which has kicked off with the Nepean triathlon and the Kurnell Sprint triathlon.

UTS Fitness Centre Manager Ben Ly inspires colleagues, gym members and spectators winning the CrossFit Shoal Haven Competition on the weekend. After suffering a fractured wrist 8 weeks ago Ben was admittedly anxious and nervous about his performance in the lead up to the event. Not being able to focus on movements he had originally planned to train, he was fortunately forced to train other areas that he wouldn’t have even contemplated previously. This revealed his weaknesses and allowed him to adapt his training and reap massive benefits. It was a very competitive and supportive atmosphere on the day, celebrating the idea of friendly competition and sportsmanship. Against 39 competitors over three events Ben went on to win his first ever competition. With no expectations set at the start of the day it was clear after the first event his very competitive side kicked in and as he said “...why not fully commit and give it everything I’ver got and not regret a single second” Ben Ly.

THE RED CARPET The playing season ended in August for the Shamrocks however the off-field festivities continued. On Saturday 12 October the club gathered at the City of Sydney RSL function room on Level 3. The red carpet was rolled out and all the players, volunteers, sponsors and supporters were acknowledged as being vital to the on-field and off-field success of the club in 2013. Award recipients for 2013 were: Christine McCutcheon (Golden Boot), Clare Gill (Rising Star), Tully McDonough (Coach’s Award), Lara Hilmi (Rookie of the Year) and Simone Faulkner (Club Person of the Year). Lara Hilmi capped of a stellar debut season, which included being named on the Sydney AFL women’s Team of the Year, by winning the Shamrock’s Best and Fairest award. Six Clover Awards were presented to arguably our craziest clovers: Erica Wilcox, Julie Thai, Natalie Middleton, Morgan Zhu, Sandra Ryan and Ness Mayer.
