Welcome We’re all wrapped up for the first half of the year and we’ll be recapping the best of the end of 2016 and everything so far in 2017. 2016 was our best year yet for intervarsity results and we’re hoping to have another great intervarsity year in 2017. The Eastern University Games just wrapped up in Newcastle and you can read all about it on page 28. This year, all of our UTS Sports Clubs are growing and they want you to join them! If you’ve been thinking about getting involved there’s no time like the present! A couple of clubs are featured in this edition and you can check out all the others online here; www.activateuts.com.au/Sport/Clubs. The City2Surf isn’t far away and UTS is looking to take out the corporate mixed team again in 2017. TeamUTS runners will be treated to a marquee on the picturesque Bondi Beach with massages for those aching muscles, drinks and a hot breakfast to refuel after 14kms.
If you’re yet to be involved in sport at UTS this year, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time and heaps of activities planned. All skill levels are catered for, you can learn about the ins and outs of using a gym and some simple facts about nutrition. If you’re interested, keep your eyes peeled for registrations for the UFit Program. If it’s something more competitive you’re after, trials to represent UTS at the Australian University Games are just around the corner. As always, ActivateFit on Harris is there to help you with any of your 2017 fitness goals. In addition to this, the new physiotherapy clinic on campus HealthFix is now open. HealthFix also has a Nutritionist and Massage Therapist onsite to make sure you’re reaching your full potential. UTS CROWNED 2016 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY SPORT OVERALL CHAMPIONS For the first time ever, UTS was able to beat out all the university sporting powerhouses, to claim the 2016 Australian University Sport Overall Champions. The Overall Champion is crowned after all Australian University Sport Championship results are tallied for the entire year. In addition to the Australian University Games, there is the Triathlon, Surfing, Rowing, Distance Running, Orienteering and Snow Sports National Championships. Throughout 2016, UTS won 12 Australian University Sport Titles. The first two came with Men’s and Women’s Surfing in July on the Sunshine Coast. Both surfing teams took the wins convincingly, with the men’s team helped along with EAP surfing scholar Shane Campbell, who not long after won the Boardmasters Festival in Cornwell. The men’s and women’s team were made up of;
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SURFING Anton Komarov | Blake Bennet | Brodie Blinkhorn | Daniel Williams | Max Anicic | Shane Campbell | Trent Pickup | Tyler Barnes | Nick Elton | Isaac Elias | Jennifer Macmillan | Eloise Boughton | Kalia Hart | Ella Farley | Madeleine Bell Eight more titles followed in early October from the Australian University Games in Perth. UTS had a number of strong teams heading to the games and it looked like Team UTS may better its placing of 2nd at the Gold Coast in 2015. It was a long week of competition and UTS came away with the titles for Women’s and Mixed Netball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s Water Polo, Men’s Rugby 7s, Men’s Athletics and Men’s Kendo. The winning teams included the following students;

UTS CROWNED 2016 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY SPORT OVERALL CHAMPIONS CONTINUED
The final two titles came after a year-long effort from our Men’s and Women’s Triathlon teams. Both teams competed all over Australia at different Australian University Sport sanctioned events including Mooloolabar, Kingscliffe and Yarrawonga. This was the 6th year running that the Men’s team have won the Title and the 5th year for the Women’s. This is largely due to the dedication and willingness of the UTS Triathlon team to spend time travelling and competing for Team UTS. The 2016 UTS Triathlon team included;
WOMEN’S TRIATHLON TEAM Moya Johansson | Alana Leabeater | Ellen Leabeater | Courtney Bicknell | Bec Punta | Zoe Streatfield | Ellana Balicki
MEN'S TRIATHLON TEAM Kieran Roche | Mitch Frankish | Hiram Zilli | Jake Foster | Guy Clarke | Felix Weiss | Pat Manfrin After checking and re-checking Australian University Sport called with the news that for the first time ever the University of Technology Sydney had won the 2016 Championship. Placed closely behind UTS was the University of Western Australia who had home town advantage for Australian University Games and in third place were rivals from down the road, the always strong, Sydney University. Team UTS is hoping to repeat the success in 2017, so if you’d like to get involved, please keep an eye out for Australian University Games trials on the UTS Sport Facebook page and if you’ve ever thought about having a go at a triathlon, visit the Sports Office in Building 4 and register your interest!

YOU BOTH CAME TO SYDNEY VIA DIFFERENT PATHS; TELL ME ABOUT WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SYDNEY AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN HERE FOR?
YOU BOTH CAME TO SYDNEY VIA DIFFERENT PATHS; TELL ME ABOUT WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SYDNEY AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN HERE FOR?
T: I’ve lived in Sydney for 2.5 years now. I finished my engineering degree in Tasmania and was originally looking to complete my masters at a university in Sydney. I had some family up here and wanted the change, I moved up at the end of 2014 and ended up landing a job with a company who supplied engineering suppor t to the defence industry (navy), and I am still currently working in that industry. This year have I decided to get back into some par t-time post-graduate study on the side through UTS.
K: I'm originally from country NSW, there isn't too much out my way so I came to Sydney to study at UTS. This is my second year living in Sydney.
TELL ME ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE STUDYING AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO GO INTO THAT FIELD? T: I’m currently studying a Postgraduate Engineering Management course at UTS. The reason being that in an industry such as engineering its impor tant to really grow your career and management is the obvious stepping stone as technical skills will only take you so far. The course so far has offered a good insight into the skills required both technically and from a human perspective for successful management of both projects and people. The subjects are credited for my masters if I decide to go down that path also
TOM, YOU’VE BEEN AT THE UTSAFC FOOTBALL CLUB FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, IN THAT TIME WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS? T: I’ve really enjoyed my time at UTSAFC both on the field. Off field, I’ve made mates for life and been introduced to a whole new network in Sydney of quality people. On field, playing finals with UTSAFC in 2016 was a real highlight, I’ve also had the oppor tunity to play representative football for AFL Sydney in 2015 against the AFL Canberra side. This year I was again lucky enough to be selected to represent Sydney against the Black Diamond League, we luckily notched wins on both occasions.
012 U T S S P O R T M A G A Z I N E E D I T I O N O N E
TELL ME ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE STUDYING AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO GO INTO THAT FIELD? K: I'm studying a Bachelor of Communications (media ar ts and production). I’m officially halfway through my course now (1.5 years). I've always been interested in film and acting but it wasn't until I had my gap year and was living overseas that I figured I wanted to follow the path. My course focuses on film and the roles of creating a film in a professional way.
KATE, YOU’RE RELATIVELY NEW TO THE UTSAFC, HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE CLUB? K: It’s been extremely inviting. I love the club mainly because of the girls in the team. They're very inclusive and suppor tive on and off the field.
KATE, WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT THE CLUB, WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK EVERY WEEK? K: Again, the people. The girls are like a family that I see 3-4 times a week. Being away from my own family, having the club helped me a lot last year with homesickness. Also, playing the game, we train so hard every week for the thrill of the game.
YOU BOTH RECENTLY APPLIED FOR THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTING SCHOLARSHIP, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO YOU THROUGH THAT? K: The scholarship gave me access to the UTS private and public gym, which is super helpful with keeping strong and fit outside of training. They also provided us with apparel, uni-games benefits, and allowing us to move our due date of assignments if they conflict with spor ts.
YOU BOTH RECENTLY APPLIED FOR THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTING SCHOLARSHIP, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO YOU THROUGH THAT? T: Academic suppor t whenever required, and use of UTS’ state of the ar t fitness facilities.
SPORT CAN BE A GREAT UNITER, WHILST AT UTSAFC WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHANGES YOU HAVE SEEN IN YOURSELF AND THE CLUB? T: My footy's definitely developed since I've been playing there, and it's been pleasing to see a more professional culture around the club. The club is managed by a great group of people, with everyone continuously seeking improvement both on and off the field.
TOM, THE MEN’S PREMIER DIVISION IS A PRETTY TOUGH COMPETITION, HOW HAVE YOU FOUND BALANCING FULL TIME WORK, TRAINING AND STUDYING FOR YOUR MASTERS? T: Time management is definitely key, I'll break my day into blocks. Usually following work I'll complete my studies, followed by the 2 hours of training. Although, as they're all independent of each other sometimes assignments being due will coincide with a busy period of work and footy also, then it becomes a bit of a juggle.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A STUDENT WHO MIGHT BE CONTEMPLATING HAVING A GO AT AFL FOR THE FIRST TIME? T: Get involved, if not for the great fitness, playing with a club like the UTSAFC you'll automatically make 150 mates across the 5 grades! Best decision I've made since moving to Sydney.
The UTSAFC have 5 men’s teams and a women’s team competing across multiple divisions in the Sydney AFL competition. To get involved please CONTACT: INFO@UTSAFC.COM.AU or find us on Facebook.
SPORT CAN BE A GREAT UNITER, WHILST AT UTSAFC WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHANGES YOU HAVE SEEN IN YOURSELF AND THE CLUB? K: My leadership and confidence has definitely improved as a result. I feel the club has become more inviting, the Shamrocks inviting to new players and the men’s teams socialising and suppor ting the Shamrocks team.
KATE, WOMEN’S AFL, SAW THE INTRODUCTION OF THE W-LEAGUE LAST YEAR, THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL FEMALE AFL COMPETITION, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COMPETITION? K: Mainly seeing the suppor t from Australia towards AFLW, it was incredible to see how well it was received and how big the turn outs were. The huge amount of talent is inspiring as well, it has encouraged me to push a bit harder to try and reach their level.
THE SHAMROCKS ARE THE WOMEN’S TEAM WITHIN UTSAFC, THEY STEPPED UP INTO SYDNEY PREMIER DIVISION THIS YEAR AFTER WINNING THE FLAG, HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE TRANSITION INTO THE PREMIER COMPETITION KATE? K: It's been pretty tough so far. The level of talent from the opposition has increased greatly so it's pushed the shamrocks to play harder, faster and get fitter. The competition within the Shamrocks has also increased; we all push ourselves to get picked in the team each week. In the last few games we've really star ted to find our game and I believe we're star ting to match the top teams.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A STUDENT WHO MIGHT BE CONTEMPLATING HAVING A GO AT AFL FOR THE FIRST TIME? K: Honestly, it's one of the best spor ts. The social aspect is amazing, you get to meet so many new, friendly people while getting fitness at the same time. It's so wonderful to be surrounded by girls with so much passion and dedication to their team and to be apar t of that is an amazing feeling. I think getting hur t is what puts most people off, but you learn how to avoid it so don't stress. Joining the Shamrocks was one of the best decisions I've made since moving to Sydney and I couldn't recommend it more.

WHAT WE DO Roughly translating from Korean as the ‘way of the fist and foot’, Taekwondo is an unarmed martial arts system emphasizing on the physical aspects of flexibility, speed and technique whilst tapping into more mental aspects of humility, respect and spirit. Particularly at UTS, we place precedence particularly into competitive Taekwondo through Sparring and Poomsae, however, UTS Taekwondo still retains its traditional aspects of self-defense, meditation, fitness and strengthening as key parts into furthering our training.
OUR SUCCESS! The UTS Taekwondo Club has seen major success in recent years and continues to power through the 2017 competitive scene both within Australia and on an international front. The club has seen strong performances in the following competitiors this year: NSW State Championships with UTS Taekwondo players clean sweeping the competition with all competitors winning their divisions. UTS Taekwondo sees 2 competitors representing on the international front with Jessica Foyster sparring in New Zealand and World selections and EAP recipient Andy Pham representing Australia for Poomsae in Taiwan Hosting the annual UTS Open with 87 competitors coming to compete from the various Sydney based universities and clubs.

World Uni Games It’s the largest multi-sport event after the Olympics, and in 2017 World University Games will be held in Taipei, Taiwan from August 19th – 30th. The Games will feature 21 sports with an estimated 12,000 athletes and officials from 140 countries and is a perfect stepping stone for athletes wishing to represent Australia at the Olympic or Commonwealth Games. Several UTS students have been selected to compete at the World University Games over several sports including;
OLIVER SIGNORINI – Swimming – Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing KENNETH TO – Swimming – Hong Kong – Bachelor of Business GABRIELLA O’GRADY – Athletics – Bachelor of Arts (Public Communication) – Bachelor of Law NICHOLAS JEFFREE – Diving – Bachelor of Global Studies HAYDER SHKARA – Taekwondo – Bachelor of Law – Bachelor of Journalism TIFFANY HO – Badminton – Bachelor of Nursing GENEVIEVE LONGMAN – Water Polo – Juris Doctor HARRY SANDERSON – Water Polo – Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science Each of these student athletes have experience competing on an international stage. In 2016 Hayder represented Australia at the Rio Olympics and will be heading to the World University Games just after competing at the World Championships. Kenneth is a Gold and Silver Commonwealth Games medallist and will be hoping to medal at the Games for Hong Kong. Ollie Signorini is the current National Champion for the Open Surf race and has competed in international races multiple times. Gabriella O’Grady represented Australia at the World Junior Championships for the 100m Hurdles and Nicholas Jeffree won gold at the Australian Grand Prix. Tiffany Ho is the second highest ranked female Badminton player in Australia and is vying for selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games team. Genevieve Longman and Harry Sanderson have both represented Australia at a Youth level and are both earmarked as future senior representatives. It’s likely that we’ll see all 8 UTS representatives make the finals in their respective sports, hopefully bringing home a medal with them. UTS students will also have the added bonus of Team Australia’s Chef De Mision and ActivateUTS CEO, Liz Morgan- Brett, leading the charge. This will be the 3rd time Liz has held this position with the Australian Uniroos and brings with her a wealth of knowledge having competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics herself, as part of the Volleyball team. Liz will also be joined in leadership, by the Rio Olympics Australian Team Chef de Mision, Kitty Chiller.
WE WISH OUR ATHLETES ALL THE VERY BEST FOR THE GAMES AND HOPE THAT THEY MAKE THE MOST OF THIS INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY.

REPRESENT NSW OR AUSTRALIA Gridiron is still a relatively small spor t in Australia, so oppor tunities to represent at the State and National level is currently less competitive compared to other codes. UTS Gridiron is always looking for players who wish to learn the game and compete at higher levels. We also extend our hand to the UTS Elite Athlete Program, for athletes who want to try another spor t. 2016 had our largest ever National representation with 9 players over our Men’s, Colts, and Women’s teams representing Australian National Teams at training camps and World Championships internationally. 2016 also had 17 UTS players who represented in the Men’s and Women’s NSW State representative teams. One of our Colts star players moved over to the States to play in a College team, another trialled for several other recruiters in the USA, and another now plays in the Germany semi-pro league. 2017 so far has already seen UTS having 11 players and 2 coaches in the Colts NSW Wolverines team, and 4 of these players have now been selected for the next Australian National Team squad. One of our coaches is also about to join the first ever Australian Women’s team competing in Canada for the World Championships.

The Eastern University Games The Eastern University Games for 2017 was held in sunny Newcastle, just af ter the end of the exam period. From the 2nd – 6th of July, TeamUTS were ready to give it their all, in the hopes of bringing home the EUGs Champion Trophy. 250 students, representing UTS in 16 different spor ts battled it out over the four days of competition against all other universities from the Eastern region. From day 1 it was clear that the University of Newcastle had made the most of their home field advantage, fielding very strong teams across all spor ts. It wasn’t all over yet though, as UTS had a number of teams that were fast becoming hot favourites to take out the title for their respective spor ts. In a few shor t days, it was time for the medal matches and UTS had 9 shots at Gold medals, eventually winning 5 of them. The Men’s OzTag team took out the Gold af ter remaining undefeated for the whole week, with a few close games through the finals series, the boys were able to work together to come out on top. The Women’s Tennis team had the team medal wrapped up before heading into the final round with UTS being the only team with 3 players in the top 8 but it was a different story for the Men’s team. The Men’s Tennis was always going to be tight with Newcastle and it came down to the last match where Jack Whittaker was able to take the individual Gold and get UTS enough points to equal with Newcastle for the team Gold. The Women’s futsal team also had an undefeated week away with some of UTS’ best futsal talent joining the team. The girls took out the well –deserved Gold medal, taking down Sydney Uni in the final 3-2. The Badminton also took out the team gold having the highest combined score of the top 3 players from UTS. Medals for UTS included;
GOLD Badminton | Men’s Tennis | Women’s Tennis | Women’s Futsal | Men’s OzTag
SILVER Women’s Football | Women’s Basketball | Mixed Ultimate | Men’s Volleyball
BRONZE Netball | Golf | Tenpin In addition to these medals, UTS also gained 2 more in the Wednesday night 3x3 Basketball competition, with the top 2 teams in both Men’s and Women’s heading to the National Championships. The winner of the National Championships will head to China to represent Australia at the World 3x3 tournament. Our Men’s team narrowly missed qualification, going down to Sydney Uni by 1 point in the semi-final, eventually winning Bronze and the Women’s team were winners of the competition, going through the tournament undefeated. TeamUTS had a great week with some fantastic results, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Newcastle advantage, and UTS ended up 2nd overall. All teams are now looking towards building for the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast later this year.

UTS Jitsu CLUB PROFILE WHO WE ARE UTS Jitsu officially joined the university in March and focuses on teaching people how to defend themselves through the art of Japanese Jiu Jitsu, a system of throws, joint-locks, and strikes, based on the unarmed combat practices of the Japanese samurai. By using an opponent’s own force against him, Japanese Jiu Jitsu enables anyone, big or small, to handle a range of aggressive situations competently and calmly. At the same time, UTS Jitsu is also a great way to get into shape, meet new and interesting people, and most importantly, to have fun. There is something very unique about being thrown by your opponent and landing safely on the mats again or the feeling you get when you manage to do a cool, action movie roll for the first time. We train twice a week and the sessions are always professional but lively with Senseis Franck and Stuart at the helm.
RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS We’re happy to say that even though we’re new at UTS, three UTS students have already attended their first grading.
UPCOMING Our next few months will be both fun and intense as we welcome guest instructors on the 15th of July, host our first grading in September, and in October attend the Australian Jiu Jitsu Association’s national seminar where we interact with clubs from across the country.
MEMBERSHIP All UTS students are offered a discount but if you’re simply curious about Japanese Jiu Jitsu and want to say hello, the first two sessions are free. Contact For more information, we can be found at UTSJITSU.COM.AU, ON OUR FACEBOOK page, facebook.com/utsjitsu or you can contact our instructor Franck at CONTACT@UTSJITSU.COM.AU OR 0481 090 255.
