La Isla de las Palomas estaba separada del Continente el año que Sir Archibald Lorenz vistió Tarifa. Pidió un bote y su dotación de remeros para ver con sus propios ojos los esqueletos de siete enormes ballenas varada en el centro de la Isla. Al preguntar con gesto a los fornidos marineros como había ocurrido el milagro, uno de ellos, el mayor de el grupo, movió sus manos imitando el movimiento del mar. Sir Archibald Lorenz decidió permanecer en Tarifa para comprender algo que desafiaba toda lógica. Mucho tiempo después, el gran terremoto de Lisboa generó gigantescas olas que inundaron completamente la Isla y se llevaron todo por delante. Lorenz anotó en su diario: "veinte años tardé en comprender un milagro insignificante en comparación a la gente y a los atardeceres que he conocido en Tarifa". El viajero moderno llega a nuestro pueblo para vivir su Experiencia Tarifa. ¿Abre tu corazón y disfruta!

Es uno de los delfines más bellos; inconfundible por su patrón de color. El delfín común es un nadador acrobático y veloz (hasta 65 km/h). Aunque se hace evidente el declive de sus poblaciones, aun es uno de los cetáceos más abundantes del planeta. Tiene 80 - 120 dientes cónicos en ambas mandíbulas, ideal para sujetar su presa. One of the most beautiful dolphins and unmistakable because of its coloration. The Common dolphin is an acrobatic and speedy swimmer travelling up to 65 km/h. Although the decline in numbers is apparent it is still one of the most abundant cetaceans in the world. It has 80-20 conical teeth on each jaw, ideal for holding on to its prey.

Es uno de los delfines más conocidos y estudiados en el mundo. El delfín mular es capaz de alcanzar velocidades en torno a los 50 km/h. Tiene 40 - 52 dientes en la mandíbula superior y 36 – 48 dientes en la mandíbula inferior. Se pueden distinguir dos ecotipos, uno más pequeño que vive cerca de la costa y otro grande, más robusto que vive generalment alejado de ella. One of the most known and studied dolphins in the world. They have 40-52 teeth in their top jaw and 36-48 teeth in their lower jaw. Two types of dolphin can be distinguished, a smaller coastal dweller and another larger, more robust type which lives in deeper waters. The Bottlenose dolphin is able to reach speeds up to 50 km/h.

Se encuentran a menudo en grupos mezclados con delfines comunes. De tamañ y peso también se parecen a los delfines comunes. Tiene 78 - 106 dientes en la mandíbula superior y 78 – 110 dientes en la mandíbula inferior. Otros nombres: delfín azul y blanco, delfín estriado, delfín blanquiazul. Often found in mixed groups with Common dolphins. Their size and weight is similar to that of the Common dolphin. They have 78-106 teeth in their top jaw and 78-110 teeth in their lower jaw. Otherwise known as the White-belly or Blue-white dolphin.

Las manadas de calderón suelen permanecer inmóviles en la superficie. Suelen realizar salidas para espiar y a veces se les observa golpeando con la cola en el agua. Capaz de sumergirse hasta un mínimo de 600 metros, pero la mayor parte de las inmersiones son de 30 - 60 metros. Tiene 16 – 24 dientes en ambas mandíbulas. Packs of pilot whales tend to lie immobile on the surface. They will surface to examine their surroundings and they have been known on occasion to slap the water with their tails. They can dive to a maximum of 600 metres, although the majority of their dives are to a depth of 3060 metres. They have 16-24 teeth on each jaw.

La orca es el delfínido de mayor tamaño. Es muy veloz, es capaz de alcanzar los 55 km/h. Tiene 20 – 26 dientes en ambas mandíbula curvados hacia atrás, hacia la garganta. La orca es un depredador muy versátil y tiene una de las dietas mas variadas de todos los cetáceos. Presencia en el Estrecho: julio y agosto. The Orca is the largest of the dolphin family. It is very fast, able to reach speeds of 55 km/h. It has 20-26 teeth in each jaw, which curve backwards towards the throat. It is a very versatile predator and has one of the most varied diets of all whales. Present in the Strait of Gibraltar during July and August.

Posee una cabeza muy grande y de forma cuadrangular y una piel muy arrugada. Puede permanecer sumergido durante más de 2 horas, aunque nor20 - 50 Tn malmente suele hace inmersiones de 45 minutos aproximadamente. 12 - 18 m Tiene 36 – 50 dientes gruesos y cónicos en la mandíbula inferior que crecen hasta una longitud de 20 cm de largo y pueden pesar mas de 1 kg. Presencia en el Estrecho: abril a junio.

The head of the Sperm whale is large, square and has a very wrinkled appearance. It can remain submerged for more than 2 hours, although it tends to surface about every 45 minutes. It has 36-50 thick conical teeth in the lower jaw which can grow to a length of 20 cm. and weigh more than 1 kg each. Present in the Strait of Gibraltar during April and June.

The second largest animal in the world after the Blue whale. The Fin whale has about 260-480 bristles on each side of the mouth, 70-90 cm in length and 20-30 cm wide. Its blow is observed as a tall, narrow column and can reach a height of 4-6 metres. It can be seen from a considerable distance. Present in the Strait of Gibraltar during April and June.

Cuando llegue por primera vez a Tarifa pensaba que me iba a encontrar docenas de cometas en la playa, sin embargo me quede alucinado al ver que solo 1 valiente intentaba hacerse un hueco entre los windsurferos. Aquella persona era Jaime Herraiz “Oru” y estaba navegando con una cometa tipo parapente de reducidas dimensiones. Aquello era alta tecnología para mí ya que mi equipo se componía de una cometa con varillas de fibra que al caer al agua se sumergía bajo el mar… Mi tabla era una tabla de surf que encontré en la basura a la que hice más de 20 agujeros para colocarle los straps y encontrar la posición correcta para los pies, el arnés era una cincha que pasaba detrás de la espalda y mi traje eran partes diferentes de trajes viejos de bucear. Así que después de hablar con Jaime conseguí comprarle 1 kite y 1 tabla y todo cambio a mejor. En aquellos tiempos las cometas solo tenían 2 líneas, no existía ningún tipo de sistema de seguridad para quitarle potencia a la cometa. Los primeros modelos eran una tela con varillas de fibra o cometas de tracción tipo parapente, pero no había nada más hasta que llegaron las wipika hinchables, las primeras cometas con tubos de aire que permitían levantar la cometa desde el agua…. Poco después llegaron las primeras de 4 líneas, la gran revolución con lo que podíamos variar la potencia de la cometa tirando de la barra, pero solo podíamos pedirle más potencia. La medida más grande que se usaba era de 9 metros, hasta el día que Eduardo Bellini apareció en Valdevaqueros con la wipica “free air” de 16 metros. Nos dejó a todos asombrados, sobre todo por el tiempo que tardaba en hinchar aquellos tubos tan grandes… pero funcionaba y nos permitía navegar con vientos de poniente muy flojos. Continuo varios años el desarrollo de los sistemas de seguridad, apareció la 5ª línea y empezaba a ser un deporte más seguro. Pero todo cambio en 2005 cuando Joan Ubide me visito en Tarifa para convencerme de que tenía el producto más revolucionario de los últimos años, la primera Cabrinha Crossbow… Aquello fue increíble, era la primera vez que podía quitarle el exceso de potencia a mi cometa simplemente estirando mi brazo. Fue entonces cuando Kite Obsession se convirtió en la primera escuela de Tarifa en utilizar estas cometas, renovando todos los sistemas de enseñanza hasta entonces ya que el kitesurf pasó de ser un deporte de riesgo y peligroso a ser un deporte fácil, divertido y sobre todo muy seguro. Con el tiempo todas las marcas evolucionaron hacia este modelo de seguridad, en el que solo soltando la barra la potencia desaparece, aunque con diferentes nombres y pequeñas diferencias…. Bow, hibrida, delta. A la vez que evolucionaban las cometas también lo hacían las tablas y fue aquí donde Tarifa puso mucho de su parte en la construcción e innovación siendo muchas veces pionera a nivel mundial en talleres

Increíble el tamaño de las barras que usábamos!!! Igual que la tabla...muy grande, con un leash de surf, arnés sin protección de hierro...una locura.

Esta fue mi primera cometa, se la compre a Oru... era un parapente que yo hinchaba a pulmón...

como el de Ovidio (Fly cat), German (No Work Team), Michel (Fun Works) Simon (Nomad) Ricardo (Rikishapes), Tad… Aún recuerdo cuando German Peral mi amigo y shaper de No Work Team me comentó que el mismísimo Roby Naish en una visita a un campeonato en Tarifa, compro una de nuestras tablas fabricada en formica, con la intención de investigar y descubrir nuestros secretos. Mucho tiempo ha pasado y han aparecido cientos de marcas, modelos, tablas, accesorios y además muchas escuelas…. Al igual que existen algunas marcas y modelos mejores que otras también existen escuelas buenas y otras no tan buenas. Si estás pensando en aprender kitesurf, no te conformes con gente inexperta que solo busca ganar dinero sin interesarse por cómo se siente el alumno en cada momento. Exige calidad, experiencia, honestidad y profesionalidad. of kitesurfing in Tarifa

These days everybody knows what kitesurfing is - Here in Tarifa every day you can see hundreds of kites in the sea flying with the wind while kitesurfers surf the waves and enjoy the marvellous beaches of Tarifa. When I first came to tarifa I thought I would see dozens of kites but was surprised to see just one brave kitesurfer amongst the windsurfers. That guy was Jaime Herraiz ORU and he was sailing with a small foil type kite... it seemed like top of the range equipment compared to mine which consisted of sticks and material that sank every time it fell into the water... My board was a surf board I had found in the rubbish which I had put 20 holes into it trying to attached the footstraps and get the right position for my feet. My harness was a belt which strapped underneath my back and my wetsuit was made up of various old diving wet suits. I spoke to Jaime, bought a new kite and board and every thing changed for the better. In those days kites only had two lines and there was no safety system to depower the kites... The first kites were made of material framed with fibre sticks or foil kites but did not evolve from there until the inflatable Wipika kites arrived... the first kites with tubes of air which allowed self launching in the water. Shotly after this the four line kites arrived which was a huge step forward as it allowed us to depower the kite by simply pulling on the bar. We now just needed to be able to increase the power, the largest kite was 9 metres until the day Eduardo Bellini arrived in Valdevaqueros with a 16 metre Wipika Free Air kite. We were all amazed especially by how long it took to pump up those massive tubes! But it worked and it meant that we could now kite surf in much lighter wind. Several years of evolution followed, security systems improved, the 5th line arrived and kite surfing became a safer sport. However the real change came in 2005 when Joan Ubide came to see me in Tarifa and convinced me he had the most advanced kite in the market The First Cabrinha Crossbow... that was an incredible kite and was the first time I could depower by simply lifting up my arm. It was then that Kite Obsession became the first shop in Tarifa to stock Cabrinha kites revolutionising the whole kite surf teaching experience, which up to then, was considered to be dangrous and risky was now suddenly an easier, more fun and most of all safer sport. In time the other brands evolved towards similar safer kites which by simply lifting up the bar depowered the kite, although named differently and with small differences such as bow, hybrid, delta. As kites developed so did the boards and it was here that Tarifa took centre stage and often pioneered the shaping of boards on a global level in workshops such as Olvidio (Fly Cat), German (No Work Team), (Michel (Fun Works), Simon (Nomad), Ricardo (Rikishapes) Tad... I still remember when my friend and shaper German Peral from No Work team told me that the very same Robby Naish during a trip to Tarifa bought one of our Formica made boards with the intention of investigating and discovering our secrets. Time has moved on and there are now hundreds of brands, boards, accessories and many schools... Just like the kite brands some are better than others, the same can be said about the kite schools, some are professional and some are not and indeed some are even illegal. If you are thinking about learning to kite ensure you choose a legal company with professionals that have a full licence, insurance, safe equipment and trained instructors... many do not and this can result in accidents. Casi siempre el viento es de levante o de poniente. Deberás usarlo o protegerte de él según tu interés. In Tarifa the wind plays a main role in the lives of its inhabitants. The wind allows us to sail almost all year. Below, we will explain all you need to know to move through Tarifa like a local. The wind is almost alway “levante” (east wind) and “poniente” (west wind). 400m. of fine, gold sand. Located between the town and the ‘Isla de las Palomas’, which separates the two seas. Easy to access, equipped with showers and rest rooms. Close to several good restaurants.

8 kilómetros de arena fina y dorada. Perfecta para el baño los días de calma o brisa moderada. Idónea para el Kitesurf entre septiembre y junio. En los meses de verano sólo se puede navegar en el área habilitada. La zona de Dos Mares es genial para aprendices y la más utilizada por las escuelas. El viento de Levante en esta playa es un viento de tierra por lo que no se aconseja a inexpertos. Hay una amplia oferta de chiringuitos a pie de playa.

8 kilometres of fine, golden sand. Perfect for bathing on calm days or with a moderate breeze. Ideal for kitesurf between September and June. In the summer months sailing is only permitted in the designated area. The area of Dos Mares (Two Seas) is perfect for beginners, kite and windsurf, and is the most visited by the kite schools. On Los Lances the east wind (Levante) comes off the land and therefore such conditions are not recommended for inexperienced riders. There are several beach bars on the shore.

Balizada en los meses de verano para la práctica de deportes acuáticos. Con restaurantes y chiringuitos. Para llegar a la playa tendremos que bajar unas escaleras.

For swimmers and bathers this beach is the most protected from the east winds. Designated areas for water-sports in summer months. Complete with restaurants and beach bars. We reach the beach by stairs.

400m también debe su nombre a uno de los hoteles pioneros de Tarifa. En ella tiene su base la escuela Mistral, lugar emblemático para los windsurfistas de todo el mundo. Al estar resguardada, el bañista puede protegerse de los fuertes vientos de levante. Posee un excelente restaurante. Se accede a la playa por una escalera.

4050m destaca por sus aguas cristalinas y es excelente para la práctica de deportes acuáticos todo el año sin restricciones. Una extensa duna permite navegar con la seguridad de que cualquier contratiempo nos llevará hacia ella. Está balizada por zonas y es perfecta para el baño. Podemos disfrutar en el restaurante y chiringuito resguardados del viento. Para llegar hasta la arena hay qye bajar por una escalera.

An extensive dune permits safe kitesurfing, as strong gusts take riders towards it, using it as a buffer. Shore waters are marked in zones for safe swimming. 3800m de arena fina y oleaje moderado. Es una playa salvaje y el paraíso para el Windsurf. Hacia el lado izquierdo de esta playa podemos encontrar piscinas naturales donde el viento de levante no molesta por estar más resguardada. Caminando un poco llegarás a la zona nudista. A pie de playa encontramos las Ruinas de Baelo Claudia, ciudad Romana del siglo II a.C.

3800m. of fine sand and moderate waves. A natural beach and a windsurfer’s paradise. To the left of the beach we can find natural pools where the east ‘Levante’ wind is blocked. After a short walk, you reach the nudist beach zone. On the shores of the beach are the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, a Roman city from the second Century A.D.

1500m de agua cristalina y arena formada por conchas trituradas. Detrás de la urbanización de Atlanterra encontramos la Playa de los Alemanes. Desde Tarifa accedemos a esta playa por la N-340 hasta Zahara de los Atunes. Seguimos hasta llegar a una cala romántica, localizada frente a una zona residencial de lujo pegada a la montaña. Debemos bajar por una escalera. No dispone de restaurantes ni lugares de ocio a pie de playa.

1500m. of crystalline water and sand formed by crushed shells. Behind the urbanization of Atlanterra we find the beach of the ‘Alemanes’. From Tarifa this beach is reached from the N-340 to Zahara de los Atunes. Continue until reaching an ancient Roman hold, situated in front of a luxurious residential zone nestled in the mountain. One must then go down a precarious set of stairs. No restaurants or bars are found on this beach.

Tanger disfruta el encanto Tánger es una ciudad turística. A ella llegan turistas desde todas partes de Europa, especialmente desde Francia y España. Como lugares de interés no debemos perdernos su Medina, La Gran Mezquita y el Museo Dar El Mandoub; en sus alrededores podremos ver lugares de sumo interés como Las Grutas y Cabo Espartel. La Medina de Tanger, siendo una de las medinas más grandes del país, es uno de los lugares de Tanger que más llama la atención de todos sus visitantes. Podemos encontrar calles estrechas, casas típicas y tradicionales, preciosos patios, jardines, un mirador con bonitas vistas al mar… y muchos lugares de interés. Pasear por el Zoco Grande, la puerta de entrada a la medina, un enorme placer, situado a la entrada de esta ciudad árabe, en él se pueden encontrar todo tipo de artículos aunque tienen un encanto especial los campesinos vendiendo sus cosechas y animales. El Zoco Chico, Pequeño Zoco o Petit Socco es una pequeña plaza situada en la medina. Se trata de un lugar magnífico para pasar el rato tomando té y observando la forma de vida y las costumbres de los habitantes. La Mezquita de Sidi Bu Abid con un minarete recubierto de hermosa cerámica policromada situada en una de las esquinas de la plaza. La Mendubia, la residencia del mendub, encargado de vigilar para el sultán a las potencias extranjeras durante la época en que Tánger era zona internacional y que en la actualidad es un tribunal. Desde allí una larga rampa conduce hasta el monumento en el que está grabado el discurso que Mohamed V pronunció el 9 de abril de 1947, este monumento está rodeado de hermosos jardines en los que se puede admirar una enorme higuera india y un dragon que, según la leyenda, tiene ochocientos años de antigüedad. La Gran Mezquita está situada en una pequeña placita rodeada por cafés y viejos hoteles que en tiempos de los romanos era el foro de la ciudad, en una calle muy cercana se levanta la Gran Mezquita y en frente una iglesia española.

Tangier is a touristic town, visited by people from all over Europe, especially France and Spain. You should not miss interesting places such as the Medina, the Main Mosque and Dar El Mandoub museum. In the locality you can find extremely interesting places such as Las Grutas (The Caves) and the Cape of Espartel. The Medina of Tangier is considered to be one of the largest in Morocco and it is one of the most attractive and visited places in the town. You can tour the narrow streets with their typical and traditional houses, gorgeous courtyards, gardens, a veranda with beautiful sea views and a wide range of significant sites. It is a real delight walking around the central market (Main Souk) and its amazing Medina Gate where you can find a variety of gifts, though the most charming scenario is the local farmers selling their products. The Little Souk (Petit Socco) is a small square in the Medina. It is a great place to enjoy a drink of traditional mint tea and view the Berber customs and life style. The Sidi Bou Abid mosque with its minaret covered in beautiful polychrome pottery is located in a corner of the square. The Mendoubia, the Mendub's residence is now a courthouse. This was the home of the person responsible for surveillance of foreign powers for the Sultan when Tangier was an international zone. From there a long ramp leads to the monument on which is engraved the Mohamed V speech, delivered on April 9th, 1947. This monument is surrounded by beautiful gardens where you can admire a huge Indian fig tree and a dragon tree which is eight hundred years old according to legend. The Main Mosque is located in a small square that in Roman times was the forum of the city. It is surrounded by cafés and old hotels and a Spanish church stands opposite the main mosque.

PARQUE NATURAL DEL ESTRECHO NATURAL PARK OF THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR Bolonia · Faro Camarinal

IDA: 1,7 Km - DIF.: Baja/Easy - H.: 30 min. - X: 248.260 Y: 3.998.384 Para este sendero existen dos posibilidades de inicio. La primera, desde el mismo aparcamiento acondicionado junto a las ruinas de Baelo Claudia. La segunda desde el Faro Camarinal, al que se puede llegar desde Zahara de los Atunes entrando por la urbanización Atlanterra. El Faro Camarinal, sobre el Cabo de Gracia, es el punto final del sendero, y un lugar privilegiado para apreciar las vistas del Estrecho, y las costas de Tarifa y Zahara de los Atunes. En el ascenso, desde Bolonia, atravesará pinares y eucaliptales sobre arenas estabilizadas y bujeos arcillosos; diversidad de paisajes y con la presencia constante del patrimonio histórico-cultural, como el complejo de Baelo Claudia.

This trail has two possible starting points. The first is from the parking lot next to the ruins of Baelo Claudia. The second is from the Camarinal lighthouse which is reachable from Zahara de los Atunes through the Atlanterra urbanization. The Camarinal lighthouse on Cape Gracia is the end point of the trail and a great place to enjoy views of the Strait and the coastlines of Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes. Ascending from Bolonia the trail passes through pine and eucalyptus forests growing on sand and clay; offering diverse landscapes and views of cultural and historical interest such as the complex of Baelo Claudia.

Duna de Bolonia

IDA: 1,1 Km - DIF.: Baja/Easy - H.: 40 min. - X: 250.469 Y: 3.997.514 El sendero tiene su inicio en la Ensenada de Bolonia, Tarifa y finaliza en la Duna de Bolonia. El Itinerario discurre por la Playa de Bolonia, sobre una pasarela de madera desde la que se divisa la duna de Bolonia, hacia la que se encamina, pasando por el conjunto Arqueológico de Baelo Claudia. A la izquierda del sendero se bordean los lagoons típicos de las Playas de Tarifa. En estas charcas se encuentra una importante avifauna entre las que destacan los vuelvepiedras. Correlimos, archibebes y gaviotas. El sendero continua adentrándose en el pinar, hasta a los pies de la Duna de Bolonia. La vereda deja el pinar para abrirse de nuevo en la playa, donde se encuentra el final del paseo. Desde aquí, las vistas de la duna resultan impresionantes... This trail begins in the cove and ends on Bolonia sand-dune. The route meanders over the beach on a wooden footpath in full view of the dune. The path goes through the Baelo Claudia archaeological site towards the dune. To the left are the typical lagoons found on the beaches of Tarifa. These waters provide home to important wildlife including Turnstones, Sandpipers, Redshanks and gulls. The trail continues into the pines at the feet of the Bolonia dune and the path leaves the pine forest at the beach which is the end of the trail. From here you can visit the majestic dune.

Colada de la Reginosa

IDA: 3,3 Km - DIF.: Baja/Easy - H.: 1,45 min. - X: 265.838 Y: 3.988.656 Tiene su inicio al final del núcleo de El Lentiscal, en Bolonia y finaliza en el Núcleo de Paloma Baja. El sendero de la Colada de la Reginosa aprovecha la vía pecuaria de la que hereda el nombre, para abrir paso a un itinerario que discurre por pinares-sabinares con manchas de enebros costeros, de gran valor paisajístico y botánico. En el último tramo del sendero podemos acercarnos hasta los restos de piedras de acueducto romano, para finalizar el recorrido en el núcleo rural de Paloma Baja. The trail begins at the centre of El Lentiscal in Bolonia and finishes in Paloma Baja (lower Paloma). The path is named after the old livestock trail it follows. It is rich with plant life and runs through a pine forest with patches of coastal juniper. The last stretch of the trail approaches the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct, finally ending in the rural centre of Paloma Baja.

Bolonia · Pulido

IDA: 9,7 Km - DIF.: Media/Medium - H.: 4h. - X: 254.081 Y: 3.998.920 Tiene su inicio en el Puerto de Bolonia, carretera CA-8202, que une la carretera N-340 con el núcleo de Bolonia, en el punto kilométrico 71 y finaliza en el Núcleo rural de El Pulido. El sendero discurre en su primer tramo por una vía pecuaria, los pastizales de las zonas altas de la sierra de la Plata y la Sierra de la Higuera. Abunda en esta zona el ganado vacuno y las construcciones rurales con valor etnográfico. El segundo tramo de este sendero discurre por el pie de la Laja de la Zarga o de Las Algas. Atravesaremos bosques de acebuche y encina de gran interés, donde se encuentra el observatorio de una importante colonia de buitres leonados. El tercer tramo atraviesa los acebuchales de las zonas medias de la sierra de La Plata, donde también aparece un abundante y variado sotobosque. El sendero se encuentra en fase de mejora. Para realizarlo y conocer su estado, contactar previamente con el punto de Información de Parque Natural: La Peña (Tarifa) Carretera N-340, Km 77,5 - Tlf.: 697955540. This trail begins in the pass of Bolonia, at kilometre 71 on the road CA-8202 connecting the N-340 main road with Bolonia and ends at the rural centre of El Pulido. The first part of the trail follows a livestock path through the high pastures of the Sierra del Plata and the Sierra de la Higuera. Cattle and interesting buildings abound in this area. The second section of this trail passes the foot of the rocky areas La Laja en Zarga and Las Algas. It continues through beautiful wild olive and Holm oak forests that also house an important vulture colony observatory. The third section passes through the middle of the Sierra de La Plata where you can see abundant and varied undergrowth. La Peña

IDA: 900 m - DIF.: Media/Medium - H.: 30 min. - X: 248.260 Y: 3.998.384 En el punto de información del Parque Natural del Estrecho, carretera N-340, Km 77,5. A través de una subida de pequeña pendiente entre pinares, llegaremos al mirador de la Peña, desde donde podremos disfrutar de unas vistas impresionantes: Punta Paloma, ensenada de Valdevaqueros, Los Lances, incluso el Atlas del continente africano, en días claros. Sobre este promontorio rocoso se ubica la torre vigía más antigua de la zona, la Torre de la Peña, al parecer de origen islámico (siglo XIII), construida para controlar el acceso terrestre a Tarifa desde poniente, muestra de un pasado lleno de historia. The start and finish of the trail is the Information Point of the Natural Park of the Strait at km. 77.5 on the N-340 road. Ascending a slight slope among pine forest you reach the viewpoint Mirador de la Peña from which you can enjoy stunning views of Punta Paloma, Valdevaqueros cove, Los Lances beach and the African continent. The oldest lookout tower in the area, La Torre de la Peña, is located on this rocky promontory. This Islamic tower was built in the 13th century to control land access to Tarifa from the west, and is another example of the rich history of the area.

Los Algarbes · Betijuelo

IDA: 5,7 Km - DIF.: Media/Medium - H.: 3 h. - X: 257.260 Y: 3.995.839 Tiene su inicio en la Necrópolis de los Algarbes, carretera A-2325 que une la carretera N-340 con el núcleo de Punta Paloma o Paloma Baja, en el punto kilométrico 74 y finaliza en la Carretera Ca-2216, por la que se accede al inicio del sendero. Emprendiendo la marcha en la Necrópolis de los Algarbes, uno de los complejos arqueológicos más importantes de la provincia de Cádiz, comienza la subida al núcleo rural de Betijuelo, donde se encuentra el segundo aparcamiento del sendero y comienza el segundo tramo del paseo. Caminando entre las viviendas rurales de Betijuelo, el itinerario sube hasta el punto más alto del recorrido, donde se encuentra un vértice geodésico en el que se disfrutan de unas impresionantes vistas panorámicas. Al reanudar la marcha se desciende por la rambla del Arroyo Puerco. En tan sólo unos pocos metros, el paseo finaliza tras pasar la Casa Forestal. El regreso hasta el aparcamiento de los Algarbes puede hacerlo por la carretera A-2325 o bien dando un paseo por la playa de Valdevaqueros.

IDA: 8,2 Km - DIF.: Media/Medium - H.: 3 h. - X: 251.741 Y: 3.996.509 Tiene su inicio en Tarifa, pasando el castillo de Sancho IV o Guzmán El Bueno, en las inmediaciones del puerto marítimo y finaliza en la Torre de Guadalmesí. El sendero aprovecha una vía pecuaria costera y atraviesa los acantilados del frente litoral de Tarifa hacia Algeciras. El recorrido centra su interés en las impresionantes vistas del continente africano a lo largo de sus 8 kilómetros, los acantilados y las plataformas de abrasión en las zonas intermareales. A lo largo del mismo es frecuente encontrar bunkers, antiguos cuarteles de la guardia civil y otras construcciones de vigilancia y defensa, que aumentan la intriga del itinerario. Al final del sendero, a la altura de la antigua Torre vigía de Guadalmesí, el observatorio del mismo nombre, nos invita a contemplar el vuelo de las aves que cruzan en el Estrecho hacia el continente hermano. The route begins close to Tarifa harbour, passing the castle of Sancho IV or Guzman el Bueno and ending at the watchtower of Guadalmesí. The trail follows a coastal livestock path and passes along the cliffs towards Algeciras. The 8 kilometre route boasts impressive views of the African continent and the exposed rocky platforms of the tidal zones. Along this intriguing route you can find bunkers, former civil guard barracks and other old buildings built for surveillance and defence. Having reached the ancient Guadalmesí watch tower you are invited to contemplate the flight of birds crossing the Strait between Europe and the brother continent.

Los Lances

IDA: 1,2 Km - DIF.: Baja/Easy - H.: 30 h. - X: 264.397 Y: 3.990.127 Existen dos opciones de inicio. En el núcleo poblacional de Tarifa, en las proximidades del campo de fútbol, o en la zona conocida El Pozuelo, en la carretera N-340, km 82. Este sendero a modo de pasarela de madera en todo su recorrido, está especialmente adaptado a personas con discapacidad. Un apacible paseo por el humedal de la playa de Los Lances, donde aves límicolas como charranes y charrancitos, chorlitejos, correlimos, vuelvepiedras y archibebes, son los máximos protagonistas del espacio. There are two options to start the trail, one close to Tarifa football stadium, the other in the area of El Pozuelo, on the N-340 main road at km. 82. This walk, being entirely on a flat wooden path, is especially accessible for people with disabilities. It is a gentle stroll through the marshlands of Los Lances beach, where birds such as terns and Little plovers, Sandpipers, Turnstones, and Redshanks are the inhabitants of this beautiful natural space.

Colada de la Costa

The path begins at the necropolis of the Algarbes, road A-2325, which links the N-340 road with Punta Paloma. The first section starts at kilometre point 74 and ends at the CA-2216 road (where you can also begin the route). Nestled in the necropolis of the Algarbes, one of the most important archaeological areas in the province of Cádiz, the trail ascends to the village of Betijuelo, where you can find another parking point for the trail and the second section of the route begins. Walking past the houses of Betijuelo the path rises to the highest point of the route where you can enjoy stunning panoramic views. Once on the trail again you descend along the Arroyo Puerco (Puerco stream) and the walk ends after passing the forestry house. You can then return to the Algarbes car park on the A-2325 road or by taking a walk along the beach of Valdevaqueros.

ALCORNOCALES NATURAL PARK Río Gualdalmesí

IDA: 7 Km - DIF.: Baja/Easy - H.: 3-4 h.

CN 340 dirección Tarifa- Algeciras, a la altura del km 95. Nos encontramos un desvío a la derecha en el área recreativa el Bujeo. El sendero parte del área recreativa el Bujeo. A partir de una señal de inicio de sendero, ascendemos por una pista forestal perfectamente marcada a través de una zona de Bujeo. Algunos barrancos nos permiten disfrutar de magníficas vistas de la sierra. Siempre en ascenso hasta llegar a la segunda señal de inicio de sendero (antes del puente) que nos adentra en el canuto de este magnífico río. A partir de aquí comenzamos la bajada. Nos encontramos con una flora típica de selva tropical, numerosas especies de helechos, alisos, quejigos... Continuamos el sendero cercano al río (siempre por su margen izquierda). Siguiendo el sendero nos vamos alejando del río hasta llegar a tener una excelente panorámica del canuto. Podemos ver la vegetación típica de este tipo de formación. En días claros, hay unas magníficas vistas del mar y de la torre Guadalmesí, allá en la desembocadura de este río. Una baliza bidireccional nos indicará la subida, hacia la izquierda, a la pista forestal que nos llevó al comienzo del canuto. Una vez en la pista, tomamos hacia la derecha para volver al inicio del sendero. At km. 95 of the N340 main road in the direction of Algeciras you can see a turning right into the recreational area El Bujeo. The path leaves from the recreational area and after a sign indicating the beginning of the trail you go up a well-marked forest path through the zone. The ravine allows magnificent views of the surrounding hills. You continue up until arriving at the second sign indicating the start of the trail (before the bridge) which guides us down into the valley of this magnificent river. From here we begin to descend and walk on the left side of the river. Here you can find a flower typical to tropical jungle and numerous species of ferns, alders and gall-oaks. Following the trail takes you away from the river until arriving at an incredible panoramic view of the valley and its flora. On clear days there are magnificent views of the ocean and the Guadalmesí tower at the mouth of the river. A sign indicates the forest path to the left which takes you to the valley entrance. Once on the path you take a right to return to the start of the trail.

Garganta Mariano

IDA: 7,6 Km - DIF.: Baja/Easy - H.: 3-1/2 h.

Se contempla el paso por los canutos de las gargantas de Facinilla, Mariano, Roque y el Huerto, así como la contemplación del Bosque de galería del Arroyo de Saladavieja antes de llegar al área recreativa Los Tornos. Abandonamos Facinas camino a las Cabrerizas, siempre en sentido ascendente, dejando atrás tras 1,5 de recorrido, la última casa de dicho núcleo disperso. Tomamos el camino forestal que parte hacia el este desde la cerrada curva del camino ascendente cruzándose, poco después de la Garganta de la Facinilla, un portillo. Tras pasar el segundo portillo, el camino discurre por un cortafuegos, dirigiéndose en adelante al sur, hacia la garganta de Mariano. La erosión antrópica redunda en el estado de conservación de este canuto, si bien existe una importante población de rododendros. La vereda asciende levemente durante unos cien metros, tras los cuales el camino prosigue en un leve descenso con amplias vistas hacia el este, hasta llegar al Canuto de Roque. En él volvemos a encontrarnos con varios madroños. Una vez cruzado el pequeño cauce se desciende hacia el Rancho Roque, en ruinas, situado en el margen derecho del cortafuegos, por el que habremos de andar. Desde dicho lugar, nos dirigimos por una vereda hasta la Garganta del Huerto, pasada la cual tomamos la vereda que se dirige al este, bordeándolo, que comunica con un camino forestal ondulante, que desemboca en la Casa del Vilano. Desde el límite inferior de la Casa del Vilano, continuamos hacia el este, hasta alcanzar la CA-2213, cruzada la cual nos dirigimos hacia el cauce del Arroyo de Saladavieja. El cauce aparece bordeado por un espeso bosque de galería formado por adelfas, álamos y alisos. En el bosque de galería es posible ver, con paciencia o suerte, algún ejemplar del escurridizo Martín Pescador. Retornamos a la comarca CA-2213 y nos dirigimos al Área Recreativa Los Tornos, la cual cuenta con una zona lúdica infantil además de ser un entorno ideal para pasar un buen día con familiares y amigos en plena naturaleza. Para más información acerca del parque consulte su web www.alcornocales.org You pass through the Facinilla, Mariano, Roque and Huerto gorges as well as the forest surrounding the Saladavieja stream before arriving at the recreational area Los Tornos. Leave Facinas in the direction of Las Cabrerizas and continue up the slope, passing the last house of the town after 1.5 km of the route. Take the forest trail which goes to the east from a curve on the upward path, just after crossing an entrance to the Facinilla gorge. After passing the second entrance the trail continues south along a firewall path towards the Mariano gorge. People have planted the rhododendrons seen here. The lane goes upwards slightly for about 100 metres after which it continues descending, with extensive views to the east, to the Roque Valley. In this valley you can find several examples of Arbutus trees. Crossing the narrow riverbed you descend towards the ruins of the Roque ranch to the right of the firewall path you now follow. From here you take a path to the Huerto gorge. After passing the Huerto gorge you go along a path to the east that borders the gorge and connects to an undulating forest track which arrives at the Casa del Vilano (Vilano House). From the lower part of Vilano house you continue eastward, reaching the CA-2213 then heading towards the riverbed of the Saladavieja. This valley is bordered by a thick forest formed by oleander, poplar and alder trees. Here you may, with a little patience and luck, see the elusive kingfisher. You return to the CA-2213 road and continue to the recreational area Los Tornos which has a playground and is an ideal environment for a good day out with friends and family in the countryside. Baelo Claudia es un pequeño recinto urbano de época altoimperial con trazado ortogonal y amurallado, que nos permite acercarnos al mundo romano y contemplar con claridad la estructura de una ciudad de la época. La plaza del foro presidida por el Capitolio y rodeada de otros edificios significativos como el templo de Isis o la basílica, junto al teatro, las termas y el barrio industrial con algunas viviendas y restos de construcciones dedicadas a la preparación de salazones, constituyen las zonas más destacadas de Baelo. Esta ciudad fue ante todo un puerto comercial y pesquero y un gran centro conservero de pescados. Era la salida natural hacia África, especialmente con Tingis (Tanger). Comerciaba también con otras tierras y exportaba e importaba productos por muchos puntos del Mediterráneo. La mayor parte de la ciudad estuvo protegida por una muralla cuyo trazado sigue siendo perceptible veinte siglos después. El teatro es el edificio más monumental de la ciudad. Las representaciones se realizaban durante todo el día en un ambiente

festivo. Eran organizadas bajo el control de los magistrados, que intentaban deleitar al pueblo para captar su benevolencia. Asistían todos los ciudadanos, aunque se les ubicaba en distintas gradas atendiendo a su nivel social. Los actores eran, generalmente, extranjeros, esclavos o libertos y por esto gozaban de poco prestigio social. Se cubrían el rostro con máscaras; así, un mismo actor podía representar varios personajes. Las representaciones más comunes y más deseadas eran las comedias; las tragedias no fueron del agrado del público romano. Los espectáculos de mimo, las danzas o pequeñas obras cómicas de carácter menor (atelanas) también gozaron del favor popular. La basílica es el segundo edificio de mayores proporciones en Baelo después del teatro. Eran grandes espacios cubiertos que desempeñaban las mismas funciones comerciales y jurídicas de los foros cuando las condiciones climatológicas hacían incómodo permanecer en el espacio abierto de la plaza.

Baelo Claudia is a small urban precinct of the ERA or Upper Roman Empire with orthogonal paths and walls to bring us closer to the Roman world and clearly contemplate the structure of a city of that time. The most important areas of Baelo are the square of the forum surrounded by other significant buildings such as the Temple of Isis or the basilica, the theatre, the baths and the industrial neighbourhood with a few houses and the remains of buildings dedicated to the preparation of salted fish. The city was first and foremost a commercial and fishing port and an important fish preserving centre. It was the natural outlet to Africa particularly for Tingis (Tangier). Baelo also traded with other lands and exported and imported products from many points of the Mediterranean. Some of its elements are more representative of a typical Roman city. The largest area was protected by a wall whose path is still

accessible twenty centuries later. The theatre is the most monumental building in the city. Performances were held throughout the day in a festive atmosphere. They were organised by judges, who were trying to delight the people to gain their favour. All citizens attended and were accommodated in various tiers according to their social level. The actors were generally foreigners, slaves or freed men and therefore enjoyed little social prestige. They covered their faces with masks and so the same actor could represent various characters. The most desired and common shows were comedies as tragedies were not to the liking of the Roman public. Mime, dance and minor comic works (atelanas) were also enjoyed. The basilica is the second largest building after the theatre. They were both large, covered spaces and they played the same legal and commercial functions as the forum when weather conditions made it uncomfortable to stay in the open space of the square.

Un pueblo que avanza A town in progress Castellar de la Fronteraes un lugar colmado de belleza y de historia con una popolacion de 4.000 habitantes, distribuidos en los tres núcleos, el Castillo Fortaleza, Pueblo Nuevo y la Barriada La Almoraima. Castellar partenecea la provincia de Cádiz y esta enclavado en la comarca del Campo de Gibraltar. Os explicamos algunos de los varios lugare de interes de este pueblo tan especial.

COMPLEJO RURAL CASTILLO DE CASTELLAR A La Villa Fortaleza de Castellar de la Frontera está construida sobre un promontorio rocoso a 248 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Su localización en un lugar alto y seguro ha permitido a distintos pobladores la vigilancia y custodia de sus dominios a lo largo del tiempo. Varios son los pueblos que se asentaron sobre este lugar, entre ellos iberos, romanos, visigodos y musulmanes. Pero fueron estos últimos los que nos dejaron el notorio ejemplo de fortificación defensiva, que construían como consecuencia de las invasiones y luchas contra los cristianos. Elevada sobre un antiguo asentamiento romano, los orígenes de la fortaleza datan del siglo X. No obstante, fue en los siglos XIII y XIV cuando se construyó el recinto defensivo tal como se conoce hoy. Antes de acceder al interior de la villa hay que pasar por dos torres albarranas, que servían de defensa en la entrada prin-

cipal y que, junto a las barbacanas y doble muro, formaban un bloque defensivo inexpugnable. En los muros y barbacanas se abren unas saeteras que servían para disparar desde ellas al enemigo. Sobre la puerta de entrada a la villa se encuentra el Alcázar. Es un edificio de forma alargada donde se localizan dos torres, la del Homenaje y otra de construcción reciente. El conjunto arquitectónico está rodeado por una muralla que varía de altura debido a la irregularidad del terreno. En esta muralla se localizan nueve torres de flanqueo cuya misión era defender los ángulos muertos. A su vez, estaba defendida por una barbacana, doble muro situado delante del principal para impedir el asalto de los atacantes. Una vez dentro de los muros, se ingresa en uno de los escasos ejemplos de núcleo habitado dentro de las murallas de un castillo: el antiguo pueblo de Castellar.

IGLESIA DE EL SALVADOR B Se asienta sobre una antigua mezquita, pero no quedan vestigios de este antiguo oratorio árabe. Además de templo dedicado al culto, esta iglesia también ha servido de cementerio a lo largo de su historia, en primer lugar, debido a los continuos asedios que sufrió la fortaleza del Castillo y, en segundo lugar, por la inexistencia de un cementerio municipal hasta ya muy entrado el siglo XIX. Adosado a esta iglesia existe un pasadizo llamado algorfa que une ésta con el Alcázar. Construido en el siglo XVII, servía para que los señores de Castellar pudieran asistir a los actos religiosos sin salir de sus estancias.

SANTUARIO STMO. CRISTO DE LA ALMORAIMA C Es la iglesia central del Pueblo Nuevo de Castellar. Su construcción contrasta por la modernidad de su arquitectura y, en especial, por la personalidad de su campanario de hormigón, que marca con su estilo el horizonte del Pueblo Nuevo.

TORRE ALMORAIMA D Se trata de una torre almenara o de señales, edificada por los musulmanes sobre una colina. Se utilizaba como torre fuerte, en caso de invasión, y como elemento de transmisión de noticias. C

Castellar de la Frontera is a place full of beauty and history. Three thousand people live in three neighbourhoods around the area: The Fortress of Castellar, Pueblo Nuevo (new village) de Castellar and La Almoraima, all these are part of Campo de Gibraltar District.

THE CASTLE AS AN EXAMPLE OF RURAL LOCATION A The town of Castellar de la Frontera was first built on a 248 meters high elevated rocky hill. Its high and safe location has provided with a suitable protected spot of vigilance and defense to a wide range of settlers over the time. Iberians, Romans, Visigothics and Muslims took advantage of its privilege strategic site. Were the Muslims who, in their fights against the Christians, best knew how to transform the emplacement into an appropriate defensive weapon. The Muslim fortress was built on the ruins of ancient Roman constructions. However, it was only between the 13th and 14th century when it was definitely erected what we can see nowadays. In order to get into the fortress you must pass through two towers which were used as the defense of the main entrance and, in addition of the mentioned towers and a double-walled fence, took part of the whole defensive block. On the top edge of the walls and towers, there is a line of battlements which were used as a shooting point to push back the eventual enemies. The “Alcazar”-Arabic name given for an elevated-defensive fortressstands right after the entrance door. Its lengthened basement was flanked by two towers: The “Welcoming Tower” and one of more recently construction. The whole complex is surrounded by an irregular wall due to the topography of the area. Flanking towers stand along the wall and provide it with an extra force. Likewise, it was also defended by a double-sized tower and wall which was to exclude the attack of enemies. Once inside the walls of a middle-aged town can be sightseen.

THE CHURCH OF SAN SALVADOR B It lays down on an old mosque but there are no traces left from the Islamic oratory. Besides temple dedicated to worship, this church also was also used as a cemetery throughout its history, firstly due to ongoing sieges and, secondly, because of the absence of a municipal cemetery until the nineteenth century.Attached to this church there is a passage called Algorfa which links it to the Alcázar. Built in the 17th century, it was used by the lords of Castellar so that they could attend religious services without going outside.

SANCTUARY OF STMO. CRISTO DE LA ALMORAIMA C It is the central church of the New Town of Castellar. Its modern architecture and, particularly, the concrete of its tower bell, are clearly remarkable in the skyline of Pueblo Nuevo.

TORRE ALMORAIMA D It is a beacon or signal tower, built by the Muslims on a hill. It was used as a strong tower, in case of invasion, and as an element of news transmission .

El actual Castillo de Guzmán El Bueno de Tarifa se supone la continuación de una anterior fortaleza que el caudillo Tarïf y sus seguidores intentarían afianzar como cabeza de puente para sus incursiones a la península, fortificándola. Lo construye el gran califa cordobés Abdarrahmán III, en el año 960, encargando de la obra al visir Abdarrahaman ben Badr. Se trata de una fortificación de planta trapezoidal asentada sobre una elevada meseta rocosa, de arquitectura militar califal de inspiración bizantina. Sus muros se articulan mediante torreones cuadradas en ángulos y lienzos , separados a igual distancia, que le confieren una sólida imagen; lo cual se refuerza por su ubicación junto al mar, que le proporciona una protección adicional y favorece sus defensas. Tarifa, dominada por las tropas invasoras desde el año 711, es reconquistada en 1292 por las fuerzas cristianas al mando de Sancho IV, lo cual supuso el triunfo más esperado y señalado de toda la Reconquista durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIII. Pero no fue hasta 1340 cuando, tras la Batalla del Salado, pasó definitivamente a manos de los reyes cristianos, quienes durante años trataron de evitar nuevas intrusiones venidas del Norte de África. De este castillo parten las murallas que a raíz de una primera cerca musulmana envuelven a la ciudad de Tarifa, y de la que se conservan lienzos y puertas de gran interés. Durante la época almohade, en el siglo XIII, le fue añadida la coracha o muro que comunica el primitivo recinto con la torre octogonal albarrana, situada exenta en un extremo. Se le conoce como Castillo de Guzmán El Bueno debido a la heroica gesta de don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, entonces alcaide de la fortaleza, quien en 1295 ve cómo el desleal don Juan, hermano del rey se sitúa con 5.000 jinetes árabes ante los muros de la ciudad y amenaza de muerte a su hijo, al que había hecho prisionero, si no entrega el castillo y rinde la plaza. La historia cuenta que el alcaide, en un acto de valor y servicio a su rey, decide no entregar la plaza y arroja su propio puñal desde el torreón, con el cual los sitiadores cumplen su amenaza. Por este gesto don Alonso, llamado desde entonces El Bueno, fue merecedor de privilegios reales y nobiliarios, y fundador de toda una dinastía y señorío: la Casa de los Guzmán, de gran influencia durante siglos en tierras de Andalucía, con sede primero en Medina-Sidonia, y más tarde en Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Ya en época cristiana, se abren ventanas y se levanta la impresionante torre octogonal del Homenaje, conocida hoy como de Guzmán El Bueno. Con el paso del tiempo el castillo se restaura en varias ocasiones. Así, en el siglo XVII hubo de ser reformado debido al ataque de la piratería berberisca que asolaba estas costas; y más tarde en el siglo XVIII parte de sus murallas se adaptan para la instalación de las nuevas armas de artillería, sirviendo durante la Guerra de la Independencia de acuartelamiento a las tropas hispano-británicas que defenden Tarifa del ejército francés durante los años 1811 y 1812. Junto a la puerta del castillo, y a los pies de dicha torre, un monumento a Sancho IV recuerda la toma de la ciudad a manos de este rey castellano.

The Guzman el Bueno castle is thought to be the extension of a previous Roman fortress used by the Arab leader Tariff and his successors. It was built to show the power and strength of the Caliphate to the Fatimies from northern Morocco and as a defense against future riots. It was erected by vizier Ab ar-Rahman ben Badr by order of the last caliph of Córdoba, Abdurrahman III, in 960 AD. It is a Byzantineinspired construction on a trapezoidal base laid on elevated rocky terrain by the sea. It has a series of square towers along the walls with corner towers of extra strength to give it solidity. Additional protection is provided by its location at the seashore. Tarifa, under Islamic power since 711, was reconquered in 1292 by Sancho IV’s army which was the most important victory for the Christians in the second half of the XIII century. It was not until 1340, immediately after the Battle of El Salado, that Tarifa became a Christian location and was used by Castilian kings to stop future invasions. The town walls begin at the castle and enclose the old town. Parts of the ancient sandstone walls are still well preserved. During the XIII century the Almohads built an independent octagonal tower, later named after Guzman el Bueno and joined to the castle by a wall (coracha) to improve its defences. It is known as Guzman el Bueno’s castle due to the heroism of Alonso Perez de Guzman, the governor of the fortress. In 1294 Guzman's disloyal brother Juan II threatened to kill his son, who was at that time a prisoner, if the fortress was not given back to the Muslims. The legend is that Guzman refused to hand over the castle and rather, threw his dagger to the Muslims who carried out the threat. Because of this act Guzman´s family were given privileges and nobility. He was granted an important lordship with great influence and control over the whole region of Andalucía. Its headquarters were located both in Medina Sidonia and Sanlucar de Barrameda. Once the Christians had control a Homage Tower was erected on the south side. Throughout the following centuries the castle underwent many restorations to reinforce its defences against continuous attacks from Berber pirates. In the 18thcentury the castle was adapted to sustain the weight of new artillery and the fortress was used as the resistance headquarters by the Anglo-Spanish coalition against the French army in the War of Independence in 1811-1812. Beside the castle gate, at the foot of the octagonal tower, there is a monument dedicated to Sancho IV and the seven hundredth anniversary of the conquest of Tarifa.

LO MÁS INTERESANTE · MOST INTERESTING La Puerta de Jerez (1) es uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos e importantes de la ciudad. Tras la conquista cristiana se ampliaron las murallas y se abrió la puerta de Jerez. En el año 2000 fue restaurada, habilitándose un espacio para la colocación del cuadro “El Cristo de Los Vientos” obra del artista Tarifeño Guillermo Pérez Villalta. El escudo situado en la parte superior de la puerta acompaña a la leyenda que recuerda la toma de la ciudad por sancho IV el Bravo en 1292. La plaza de la Oficina de Turismo acoge el busto de Juan Luis Muñoz Alonso (2), conocido como el sabio de Tarifa en la proyección mediática que los programa de Jesús Quintero, como El Vagamundo o Los ratones coloraos. Saldremos desde la oficina de turismo, sita en paseo de la Alameda, aquí se encontraba la Ermita dedicada a la Virgen del Sol (3), patrona de los marineros. Esta Ermita estaba situada en el solar que hoy ocupa la oficina de Turismo, antigua biblioteca municipal. Nos dirigimos a la izquierda para adentramos en el casco antiguo, pasando por el Mercado de Abastos (4), que funciona como tal desde 1928, aunque data de 1536 como convento. En sus orígenes fue el convento de la santísima Trinidad de los trinitarios descalzos, orden religiosa cuya principal misión era rescatar cautivos de los piratas berberiscos. Seguimos por las Plazas (5): San Martín, San Hiscio, C/del Lorito, C/San Francisco, calle peatonal, turística y típica, en la que podemos contemplar un número de bares y establecimientos, ideales para la noche tarifeña. Conectando a la izquierda con la Calzada, calle principal de Tarifa, amplia y bulliciosa arteria de la ciudad, donde podremos tomar algo y probar los suculentos pasteles y dulces tarifeños, de reconocido prestigio en la provincia de Cádiz. Observamos la Iglesia de San Mateo (6), de estructura gótica terminada ya bien entrado el siglo XVI. Conserva algunos cuadros y esculturas barrocas de interés, así como varias

obras notables de orfebrería. Seguimos a la izquierda mirando la fachada de la iglesia y al final de la calle se puede ver el Monumento erigido en honor al General D. Francisco Copons y Navía (7), defensor de la plaza de Tarifa ante el asedio francés entre diciembre de 1811 y enero de 1812. Volvemos a la iglesia y frente a su fachada giramos a la derecha y encontramos el Casino y Cárcel Real, Plaza de la Fuente (8) con la primera fuente de agua corriente instalada en Tarifa en el año 1831. Subiendo a la izquierda hasta la Plazuela del Viento se encuentra El Miramar (9), un mirador enclavado en la muralla. También encontramos el Edificio del Ayuntamiento en la Plaza de Santa María o de la ranita (10). Bajando las escaleras y girando a la izquierda, al final encontramos el Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno (11), datado del año 960, por orden del califa Abderraman III, se levantó sobre las ruinas de un posible campamento militar romano. Recientes excavaciones arqueológicas efectuadas en el Castillo han descubierto la existencia de vestigios de la Edad de Bronce, época Púnica, Ibérica, así como del alto y bajo Imperio Romano desde su etapa inicial republicana. Tras la conquista cristiana por el Rey Sancho IV El Bravo en 1294 se produce el acontecimiento que ha dado renombre mundial a Tarifa. La actitud heroica de Guzmán El Bueno, el cual prefirió sacrificar a su hijo antes de entregar a los musulmanes el castillo que el rey le había confiado. Seguimos por la calle de enfrente donde se ubica la Iglesia de San Francisco (12), de estilo Barroco y Neoclásico. Volviendo al castillo podemos coger la calle a su derecha y rodeando el puerto encontraremos un camino do del Sala que nos llevará a la punta del Santo (13), Batalla símbolo de Tarifa y resguardo del puerto o, dejando el puerto a nuestra izquierda, seguiremos hacia delante y pasando por el puerto pesquero descubriremos el Castillo de Santa Catalina (14).

The Puerta de Jerez (1) is one of the most emblematic and important monuments in the town. This gateway was constructed when the town walls were extended after the Christian conquest. In 2000 it was restored and now incorporates the painting “El Cristo de los Vientos” by the tarifeño artist Guillermo Pérez Villalta. The shield above the gate has an inscription recalling the storming of the town by Sancho IV the Brave in 1292. At the square in front of the Tourist Office we can find the bust of Juan Luis Muñoz Alonso (2), known as the sage from Tarifa in the media thanks to the TV programs of Jesús Quintero, like El Vagamundo or Los ratones coloraos. Walking from the Tourist Office you can see the chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Sol (3) the patron saint of sailors. It was originally located on the site of the office and former town library. Turning left into the old town you walk past the Market (4) which has existed since 1928. Records from 1536 show that it was a convent of the Holy Trinity. The main mission of this religious order was to rescue captives from the Barbary pirates.

The Plazas (5) San Martín, San Hiscius, C/del Lorito and C/San Francisco are pedestrian streets where you can enjoy shopping or a night out in the bars. They all lead to the bustling main street. Here you can sample the delicious cakes and sweets renowned throughout the province of Cádiz. The Church of San Mateo (6) is a Gothic structure completed in the sixteenth century. Baroque paintings and sculptures of interest are preserved here as well as several important pieces of jewelry. Facing the front of the church, continue to the left and at the end of the street stands the monument erected in honour of General D. Francisco Copons y Navía (7), defender of Tarifa during the French siege between December, 1811 and January, 1812. Returning to the church, on its right we find the Casino, the Jail and the Plaza de la Fuente (Fountain Square) (8) where the first source of running water was installed in Tarifa in 1831. Close by is the Plaza del Viento (Windy Square) and the Miramar (9), a lookout point from the walls. You will find the Town Hall in the Plaza de Santa María (10) also known as the Square of the Little Frog.

Este fue construido en la segunda década del siglo XX, siguiendo el estilo neorrenacentista. Parece ser que, antiguamente, allá por el siglo XVI, en el cerro hubiera una ermita. Seguimos hasta adentrarnos en al camino de la isla de las palomas (15), es en esta es donde se encuentra el punto más meridional de Europa, separando el mar Mediterráneo del Atlántico. En el año 1808 se construye el camino de la isla que hasta entonces estaba separada de Tarifa. Desde la entrada de la isla se puede contemplar unas bonitas vistas del continente africano. 7 Conectando con el Paseo marítimo que se extiende hasta el Campo de Fútbol, continúa por la costa (Pn del Estrecho) un camino de pasarelas de madera hasta el Río La Vega.

Castillo talina Ca S. Head down the steps and turn left to find the Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno (11). This castle dates from 960 and was built on the ruins of a Roman military camp by order of Caliph Abderrahman III. Recent archaeological excavations have discovered traces from the Bronze Age, Punic, Iberian and Roman Republican settlements. The Christian conquest by King Sancho IV el Bravo in 1294 and the heroic gesture of Guzmán el Bueno, who sacrificed his son rather than give the Muslims the castle, have given Tarifa worldwide renown. Continuing down the street you will find the neoclassical Church of San Francisco (12). Walking back to the castle we can take the first street to the right and going around the hill we will find a path which will lead us to the Saint’s headland (13), religious symbol of Tarifa and protection dock. Leaving the fishing harbour, let´s walk along towards the way

to the island and we will find Castillo de Santa Catalina (14) which was built in the second decade of the 20th Century. From here you finally arrive at the Isla de Tarifa or Isla de las Palomas (15). This island is the southernmost point of Europe and separates the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The road connecting the island to the mainland was built in 1808. Walking from here along the seafront promenade you have a great view of the African coast. This promenade extends past the football ground onto a wooden walkway which crosses the natural park and reaches the river mouth of el Rio de La Vega.

Durante un viaje, el Rey Alfonso XIII paro en un descanso y ordenó una copa de jerez. Este día hacia mucho viento. Para evitar que el jerez se llenara de arena, el camarero colocó una loncha de jamón en el catavinos real. Al Rey le gusto tanto la idea que pidió que le sirvieran otro vaso, con una “tapa” igual. Al ver esto, la gente que acompañaba pidieron lo mismo.

There are two versions of the origin of this word. King Alfonso X requested that public places only serve wine accompanied by something to eat. This was to line the stomach and prevent clients from getting drunk. The snack was originally placed as a lid over the wine, on the mouth of the pitcher or glass and was ‘covering’ the receptacle. The word tapa means ‘a lid’ or ‘to cover’ in Spanish. During a trip, King Alfonso XIII decided to rest and ordered a glass of sherry. The day was very windy and in order to prevent the sherry from filling with sand, the bartender placed a piece of ham on the royal glass. The King liked the idea so much that he asked to be served another glass with a similar ‘lid’ (tapa). On seeing this, the people accompanying him also asked for the same.
