finales del siglo XIII el Estrecho de Gibraltar era muy disputado por los tres reinos ribereños: el reino nazarí de Granada, el reino bereber de Fez (de los llamados “benimerines” que dominaban el Magreb) y el reino de Castilla. Alternativamente luchaban y se aliaban entre sí, apoyándose en renegados de todos los contendientes. En 1275 se formalizó una alianza según la cual los benimerines apoyaban a los granadinos a cambio de la entrega de la fortaleza de Tarifa y algunas otros castillos. En sentido contrario, algunos famosos caballeros cristianos —entre ellos, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán— habían ido a luchar a África como mercenarios al servicio de los benimerines. Por esta razón los caballeros musulmanes y cristianos tenían un buen conocimiento unos de otros, pues muchos habían combatido juntos o entre sí a lo largo de los últimos años. Poco a poco los benimeríes habían ido ampliando sus plazas y extendiéndose en Andalucía y comenzaron a ser un peligro para los granadinos. Por eso los nazaríes de Granada llegaron a la conclusión de que los castellanos habían pasado a ser un mal menor para ellos. Hacia 1292 los granadinos se aliaron con los castellanos para tomar varias fortalezas de los benimerines. El rey Sancho IV de Castilla dirigió en persona el asedio a Tarifa. La lucha fue muy dura y en ella participó heroicamente su hermano, el Infante Juan de Castilla. Finalmente, el 21 septiembre de 1292 los castellanos consiguieron forzar su entrada por un postigo de la parte este de la fortaleza, “de Santiago”. El rey Sancho había prometido devolver Tarifa a los nazaríes, a cambio de que estos le ayudaran a conquistar Algeciras y otras plazas; pero una vez la fortaleza estuvo en su poder el rey de Castilla cambió de opinión, incumpliendo el compromiso. Ante el incumplimiento del pacto los granadinos respondieron recuperando su alianza con los benimerines. Dado que era seguro que antes o después la alianza de los reinos musulmanes iba a tratar de recuperar una fortaleza tan estratégica, el rey le encomendó la defensa de Tarifa a los caballeros más prestigiosos: la Orden de Santiago. En julio de 1293 el rey Sancho nombra alcaide de Tarifa a Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, buen conocedor de los benimerines, ya que había combatido a su servicio en África. Antes de continuar la historia, conviene que entendamos las complicadas relaciones familiares de Sancho IV con su hermano menor, el infante Juan de Castilla. At the end of the thirteenth century the Strait of Gibraltar was much disputed by the three frontier kingdoms: the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, the Berber kingdom of Fez (of the so-called “benimerines” that dominated the Maghreb) and the kingdom of Castile. They alternated between fighting and allying with one another, using renegades on both sides. In 1275 an alliance was formed in which the Benimerines agreed to support the Granadans in exchange for the fortress of Tarifa and some other castles. Elsewhere, some famous Christian knights - among them, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán - had gone to fight in Africa as mercenaries in the service of the Benimerines. For this reason, Muslim and Christian knights knew each other well, as many had fought together or against each other over the past few years. Little by little, the Benimerines had expanded their strongholds and spread throughout Andalusia and became a threat to the people of Granada. The Nasrids of Granada therefore concluded that the Castilians were a lesser threat to them. Around 1292 the Granadans allied with the Castilians to take several fortresses from the Benimerines. King Sancho IV of Castile personally led the siege of Tarifa. The fight was difficult and his brother, the Infante Juan of Castile, participated heroically. Finally, on September 21, 1292 the Castilians managed to force entry by the “Santiago gate” from the east side of the fortress, King Sancho had promised to return Tarifa to the Nasrids in exchange for their help in conquering Algeciras and other places; but as soon as the fortress was in his possession, the king of Castile changed his mind, breaching the commitment. The Granadans responded to this breach of the pact by reforming their alliance with the Benimerines. Since it was certain that sooner or later the alliance of the Muslim kingdoms would return to reclaim the strategic fortress in Tarifa, the king entrusted the defense of Tarifa to the most prestigious knights: the Order of Santiago. In July 1293, King Sancho appointed Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, mayor of Tarifa, who knew the Benimerines well, since he had fought at his service in Africa. Before continuing the story, it is important to understand the complicated relationship between Sancho IV with his younger brother, the Infante Juan de Castilla. King Sancho IV rebelled against his father, King Alfonso X the Wise, when he tried to leave some of his territories to other family members, among which was his brother, the Infante Juan. En 1294 el Infante Juan volvió a la Península para organizar el asedio de Tarifa, pero en esta ocasión a favor de los musulmanes granadinos y marroquíes. El infante intentó convencer al alcaide Alonso Pérez de Guzmán para que entregara la plaza y el alcaide se negó. El infante Juan, aprovechándose de que tenía en su poder a Pedro —el segundo hijo del alcaide— le amenazó con matarlo si se obstinaba en no entregarle la plaza. Desde lo alto de la torre albarrana Pérez de Guzmán le respondió que podían matar a su hijo y a otros cinco más si es que los hubiera tenido, pues en ningún casi le entregaría el castillo. Y se ha escrito que a continuación les gritó: “Si no tenéis un arma para consumar la iniquidad, ahí tenéis la mía” lanzándoles su daga. Los sitiadores allí mismo degollaron a Pedro ante la mirada de su padre. Al finalizar el cerco la noticia de la actuación de Alonso pronto alcanzó la corte de Toledo. Alonso salió de Tarifa recibiendo toda clase de homenajes por su responsabilidad. El rey Sancho —no pudiendo acudir a recibirle— le escribió una carta en la que le decía: “Mereces ser llamado ‘El Bueno’, y ansí vos lo llamo, y vos ansí vos llamaredes de aquí en adelante”. Así el relato sobre Alonso Pérez de Guzmán se transformó en la historia de Guzmán el Bueno.

Juan conspired against his brother, and was forced into exile in Portugal. From there, Juan would go to Tangier, where he served the Sultan Benimerin. On his journey through foreign kingdoms Juan took Pedro Pérez de Guzmán, the second son of the governor of Tarifa, with him. In 1294 the Infante Juan returned to the Peninsula to organize the siege of Tarifa, but this time in favour of the Granadan and Moroccan Muslims. The Infante tried to convince the governor Alonso Pérez de Guzmán to deliver the fortress and the governor refused. The Infante Juan used the fact that he had Pedro, the second son of the governor, who he threatened to kill if Guzmán did not hand over the fortress. From the top of the Albarrana tower, Pérez de Guzmán responded that they could kill his son and five others if he had them, because in no case would he deliver the castle. And it has been written that he yelled at them: “If you do not have your own weapon to complete the iniquitous deed, take mine” by throwing his dagger at them. The besiegers slaughtered Pedro right there, before his father’s very eyes. At the end of the siege the news of Alonso´s performance soon reached the court of Toledo. Alonso left Tarifa receiving all kinds of tributes for his achievements. King Sancho — unable to come to receive him — wrote him a letter in which he said: “You deserve the name ‘The Good One’, and that’s what I will call you, and you will call yourself from now on.” Thus the story about Alonso Pérez de Guzmán became the story of Guzmán el Bueno.

Puerta de Jerez

Una de las imágenes más emblemáticas de Tarifa. Está en el acceso principal de las Murallas medievales. Tras desaparecer la Puerta del Mar, situada en el oeste, y la Puerta del Retiro al este (hoy punto de ubicación de la estatua del General Copons y Navia), la Puerta de Jerez representa actualmente todo un icono de la ciudad. Tal como la vemos en la actualidad es una mezcla de construcción musulmana y cristiana. La puerta originaria es la más interior, formada por un arco de herradura, con la utilización del ladrillo. En su interesante bóveda de espejo se puede ver unas Ilamativas pinturas. La puerta se abre entre dos torres muy cercanas, que se encuentran rebajada en su altura. Los cristianos añadieron un nuevo tramo a la puerta, el más exterior, que termina en un elegante arco apuntado formado por sillares apoyados en dos medias columnas. Un emblema en su parte superior recuerda la conquista de la ciudad por parte de Sancho IV el Bravo en 1292. One of the most emblematic places in Tarifa. It is the main access through the medieval walls. Following the disappearance of the Sea Gate, located in the west, and the Refuge Gate to the east (today the location of the General Copons and Navia statue), the Jerez Gate is an icon of the town. As seen today, it is a mixture of Muslim and Christian construction. The original gate is the innermost part, formed by a horseshoe arch in brick. Inside the interesting guard´s recess you can see an engaging painting. The gate lies between two towers, which have been lowered. Christians added an extension to the gate, the outermost part, which ends in an elegant pointed arch formed by ashlars supported by two half columns. An emblem above the gate is in memory of the conquest of the city by Sancho IV the Brave in 1292.

La Isla de las Palomas, o de Tarifa, que es la ultima estivación rocosa del continente europeo, antes de sumergirse en aguas del Estrecho. Su punto más meridional lo ocupa en la actualidad un faro, construido aprovechando una torre almenara del siglo XVI. En la isla son visibles los restos de al menos cinco hipogeos funerarios fenicio-púnicos excavadas en la roca, con entrada por medio de un pozo, situadas en el sector mas próximo al puerto. Cerca se encuentra un espigón ciclópeo, que también ha sido considerado fenicio. La isla, está formada por dos tipo de roca: la capa inferior es de areniscas silíceas, que dispuestas en crestas rocosas que forman la mayor parte del relieve de la zona, y a ella se superpone otro tipo de roca conocido popularmente como piedra ostionera, formado más recientemente por antiguas playas y fondos marinos fosilizados, que alberga gran número de conchas de moluscos. La práctica totalidad de la superficie de la isla se ha visto muy alterada por la construcción de canteras de donde se extrajo sistemáticamente, desde época romana, roca caliza fosilífera para la construcción (por ejemplo, en el Castillo de Guzman el Bueno) su extracción ha modificado notablemente la morfología de la isla, siendo todavía visibles algunos cortes de cantera junto al mar, por donde se transportaba, o en la misma entrada de la isla, cuyo murallón defensivo es en buena parte la misma roca cortada. La isla no alberga ninguna fortificación hasta la citada torre de 1588, pero no será hasta el sig lo XIX, tras la invasión francesa, cuando se construyan en su perímetro una dársena fortificada y una completa serie de baterías, y en el interior cuarteles y un impresionante polvorín subterrá-

Las Palomas Island (‘Dove Island’), otherwise called Tarifa Island, is the furthest southern land structure in Europe prior to the waters of the Strait. Its extreme point is nowadays home to a lighthouse located in a 16th century beacon tower. A Phoenician temple seems to have also existed there, though nothing remains of it, but there are remains of at least five Phoenician-Punic funerary hypogea that were excavated on the rock and accessed by way of a well. A cyclopean breakwater wall is nearby, apparently of undocumented Phoenician origin. The island is formed by two types of rocky terrain: the lower strata is made up of silica sandstone that built up as rocky crests making up most of the area, and, on top of which an upper layer contains another type of stone popularly known as ‘ostionera’ (made up of sea shells) which built up as a result of fossil debris accumulation on old beaches and fossilized sea floors. Practically the whole island’s surface has been greatly altered by the construction of quarries where, since Roman times, fossiliferous limestone for construction has been systematically extracted (for example, Guzmán el Bueno castle) and the fact that it has been frequently extracted has produced a notable effect on the island’s morphology: some quarry cliffs are still visible near the sea where the rock was transported, or at the very access point of the island, whose rampart is made up, in fact, by just the same stone having been cut up. The island does not house fortifications except the aforementioned tower dating back to 1588 and it was not until the 19th century when, after the French invasion, a fortified inner harbour was built, together with a set of battery bar-

Ese año fue construido el camino, obra de Antonio González Salmón, quien también fue responsable del espigón que hace función de puerto de Tarifa. Desde el momento de su construcción marca la línea divisoria entre dos mares. En la parte del Mediterráneo la arena que antes se situaba en La Caleta se deposita ahora en la cala junto a la isla, creando la popularmente conocida como “playa chica”. Al otro lado del istmo ya en el Atlántico, comienzan los 10 Km de playa de Los Lances y Valdevaqueros, de fina arena. En sus fondos, de aguas claras y gran riqueza biológica, abundan especies animales y vegetales representativas tanto del mar Mediterráneo como del Océano Atlántico. Desde mediados del siglo XX se establecieron gran cantidad de cuarteles y sus terrenos fueron propiedad del Ministerio de Defensa hasta que fueron declarados de Dominio Público Marino Terrestre en 1988. La posterior declaración en 2003 del Parque natural del Estrecho de Gibraltar supuso la protección de la isla y de sus aguas más inmediatas debido a sus peculiares valores ecológicos.

racks and, inside, some encampment stations and an impressive ammunition dump. Until 1808 the island remained separated from Tarifa. That year the road to the island was built by Antonio González Salmón, who was also responsible for the jetty that serves as port of Tarifa. On the Mediterranean side, the sand that previously formed La Caleta Beach is now deposited in the small bay beside the island, thereby creating the popularly known Playa Chica (‘Small Beach’), a place the locals are fond of visiting, being shaded from the wind, and where diving ‘christenings’ or first dives are also conducted. On the other side of the neck of land is the Atlantic and the 10 kilometres of sandy beaches forming Los Lances and Valdevaqueros begin. The biologically rich sea floor and clean waters are home to many species of flora and fauna typical of both the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean. Since the mid-twentieth century, a large number of barracks were established and the land was the property of the Ministry of Defense until it was declared a Terrestrial Marine Public Domain in 1988. The subsequent declaration in 2003 of the Natural Park of the Strait of Gibraltar meant the protection of the island and its most immediate waters due to its peculiar ecological values.

En 1928, la comandancia de Marina mandó construir un castillo que serviría como complemento del Faro de Tarifa. Las obras del edificio fueron acabadas en 1933. Tras la Guerra Civil, las defensas se reforzaron a su alrededor con varios búnkeres comunicados entre sí por túneles. 1972 se instaló el observatorio meteorológico de la Marina, que en el 2000 se trasladó a otro lugar, pasando Santa Catalina a ser de nuevo propiedad municipal. Desgraciadamente se encuentra abandonado y cada vez más deteriorado.

Castillo

Santa Catalina A unos pasos del Puerto de Tarifa y unos 300 metros del Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, llegamos al cerro de Santa Catalina donde se puede ver un peculiar castillo. No ha vivido historias románticas de princesas y caballeros. Debe su actual nombre a una antigua ermita allí situada dedicada a la Santa. La ermita tenía una sola nave y una pequeña espadaña. Al ser un lugar apartado, sirvió como lazareto durante la epidemia de peste del siglo XVII, pero pronto, por su posición elevada y de control estratégico sobre la isla de las Palomas y el Castillo de Guzman el Bueno, el cerro comenzó a tener uso militar. En 1771 la ermita fue convertida en almacén de pólvora y durante la Guerra de la Independencia los ingleses la demolieron y comenzaron las obras de un fuerte para artillería del que todavía quedan restos.

w A few steps from the Port of Tarifa and about 300 metres from Guzmán el Bueno castle we reach Santa Catalina hill on which you can see a peculiar castle. It has not experienced romantic stories of princesses and knights. It is a former hermitage dedicated to the saint which gives it that name. The hermitage had only one nave and a small bell gable. Being a secluded place, it served as a quarantine during the epidemic plague of the 17th century, but soon, due to its high position and strategic view of Las Palomas island and Guzman el Bueno castle, the hill began to have military use. In 1771 the hermitage was converted into a gunpowder store and during the War of Independence the English demolished it and began creating an artillery fort of which remains still can be seen. In 1928, the Navy Command ordered the construction of a castle to complement Tarifa lighthouse. The building works finished in 1933. After the Civil War the defenses were reinforced around it with several bunkers communicating with each other by tunnels. In 1972 the Navy meteorological observatory was installed there, which in 2000 moved to another place, the ownership of Santa Catalina passing to the municipality. Unfortunately now it is abandoned and deteriorating.

Puerta de Jerez

Es uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos e importantes de la ciudad. Tras la conquista cristiana se ampliaron las murallas y se abrió la puerta de Jerez. En el año 2000 fue restaurada, habilitándose un espacio para la colocación del cuadro “El Cristo de Los Vientos” obra del artista Tarifeño Guillermo Pérez Villalta. El escudo situado en la parte superior de la puerta acompaña a la leyenda que recuerda la toma de la ciudad por Sancho IV el Bravo en 1292.

Iglesia de San Mateo

De estructura gótica terminada ya bien entrado el siglo XVI. Conserva algunos cuadros y esculturas barrocas de interés, así como varias obras notables de orfebrería.

Puerta de Jerez

One of the most emblematic and important monuments in the town. This gateway was constructed when the town walls were extended after the Christian conquest. In 2000 it was restored and now incorporates the painting “El Cristo de los Vientos” by the tarifeño artist Guillermo Pérez Villalta. The shield above the gate has an inscription recalling the storming of the town by Sancho IV the Brave in 1292.

el viento Tarifa and its partner, the wind Tarifa tiene un compañero incansable, el viento. Viento de levante o viento de poniente. El viento de levante recibe este nombre porque proviene del este, dirección desde la que se “levanta” el sol. Este viento nace en el Mediterráneo central, en las proximidades de las Islas Baleares y de la cordillera de África. Se dirige al atravesar el Estrecho aumentando de fuerza por el efecto Venturi al cual se debe que el viento sea mas fuerte en Algeciras o en el Golfo de Cádiz. El efecto Venturi determina que, si un fluido en movimiento se ve obligado a atravesar un estrechamiento, en nuestro caso el Estrecho de Gibraltar, se acelera, experimentando un aumento de su velocidad en lado saliente del cambio de sección. Los vientos de levante pueden soplar en cualquier momento del año, no tiene regla fija, pero son más comunes de mayo a octubre. El Levante es muy intenso, ya que produce vientos medios sostenidos de 50 kilómetros por horas y rachas que pueden superar los 110 kilómetros. Cuando es muy fuerte puede llegar a imposibilitar la salida de barcos desde los puertos de Tarifa y Tánger. Los periodos de viento de Levante, popularmente conocidos como levanteras, pueden llegar a durar más de diez días consecutivos. El levante es un viento seco, al atravesar todo el este de Andalucía gana temperatura, haciendo subir la misma; mientras el poniente es un viento muy húmedo que arrastra frío del océano Atlántico, conservando el aire a menos temperatura y haciendo más agradable tanto noches como días. El poniente es un viento que llega de oeste y se llama así porque por ahí se “pone” el sol, generalmente es moderado, no llegando a rebasar los 50 km/h. Con el poniente son frecuentes las nieblas a primeras horas de la mañana, suelen aparecer durante la noche pero no hay qué preocuparse porque se disipan hacia el mediodía. El viento en esta provincia no solo influye en las actividades humanas que se desarrollan en la zona, también modelan la orografía de las impresionantes playas, donde se puede encontrar la Duna de Punta Paloma. Tarifa has a tireless companion, the wind. We have two prevailing winds in Tarifa; the levante and poniente. The name ´levante´comes from the verb ´levantar´ meaning to raise and refers to wind from the East – the direction from which the sun ´rises´. The levante wind rises in the central Mediterranean and around the Balearic Islands and mountain ranges of Morocco. This wind blows westwards through the Strait of Gibraltar in which its force increases significantly due to the Venturi effect. It is this Venturi effect that causes winds to be stronger in Tarifa than in Algeciras, or the Gulf of Cadiz, for example. The Venturi effect describes the principle that when a moving fluid faces a constriction, or narrowing, (in this case the Strait of Gibraltar), the velocity of flow increases at the constriction. This funnel effect is the cause of Tarifa´s strong winds, with the Strait of Gibraltar creating the constriction the wind must pass through. Levante winds can occur at any point during the year, there are no hard-and-fast rules, however they are most common between May and October. Levante wind is incredibly strong, producing average winds of 50km/h with gusts that can exceed 110km/h. When it is particularly strong it can close the ports in Tarifa and Tánger. Periods of levante winds, popularly known as levanteras, can last more than ten consecutive days. Levante winds are dry, and gain heat as they cross the east of Andalusia causing their temperature to rise. Poniente wind, however, is very humid, bringing the cold temperatures from the Atlantic Ocean, keeping the air cool and providing us with pleasant temperatures both day and at night. Poniente winds come from the West, with the name coming from the verb ´poner´, used to describe the setting of the sun. They are generally moderate winds with a maximum speed of 50km/h. Sabemos que para proteger el ambiente subacuático tenemos que comprometer a nuestros amigos y a nuestras comunidades, participar en actividades sobre la responsabilidad en el agua y animar a los demás a aprender más sobre los desafíos del mundo moderno.” Este nivel de cambio incluye las acciones de cada día para promover cambios positivos, evitando por ejemplo el uso de objetos de usar y tirar. La Asociación Nereide, en esta misma línea, nos llama a la reflexión recomendándonos que tengamos en cuenta las “5 erres”.* Ambas asociaciones nos recuerdan que: Rechazar, Reutilizar, Reducir, Reciclar, Reparar son pequeños hábitos que pueden provocar grandes cambios en nuestro entorno, y que a la vez repercuten sobre el bienestar de nuestro planeta. Además predicar con el ejemplo puede causar un movimiento dominó mucho más amplio, sobre todo si te tomas un poco de tiempo para explicar tus actitudes. Ambas asociaciones están convencidas de que entre todas las personas podemos mejorar la situación de nuestro planeta, aumentando nuestra implicación y nuestra responsabilidad. Vivimos en un paraíso, El Estrecho de Gibraltar, dónde se besan el océano Atlántico y el mar Mediterráneo, tiene varios parques naturales y zonas protegidas, es zona de paso y migración de aves y tiene una presencia muy alta de importantes especies de cetáceos, algunos de éstos en la lista roja de IUCN de especies en peligro de extinción. Estamos hablando de un área con un impresionante nivel de biodiversidad y, sin embargo no estamos sabiendo protegerlo adecuadamente, porque quizá todavía no tenemos la suficiente conciencia y responsabilidad medioambiental. Es cierto que nuestros océanos se están enfrentando a unos problemas desalentadores; desde la pesca indiscriminada hasta el cambio climático o la contaminación de plástico. La contaminación es una problemática a la orden del día, sin embargo, saltan las alarmas aún más cuando hablamos de residuos y deshechos. Estamos consumiendo sin reflexionar demasiado, esto provoca que la mayor parte de lo que consumimos se convierta en residuo (envases de usar y tirar, o packaging). ¿Y qué sucede además en nuestro paraíso? Pues que las características climáticas que tenemos, específicamente los vientos, provocan que esto se agrave cuando gran parte de nuestros residuos vuelan por las calles y acaban en el mar, convirtiéndose en escombros, matando organismos y dejando sustancias químicas en el medio ambiente. A día de hoy la mayoría de animales marinos aparecen varados o enfermos por ingerir o quedarse atrapados en nuestras basuras. Se calcula que en el año 2050 habrá más plásticos en los océanos que peces. ¡Hay que actuar ya! Para concienciar sobre este tema y reducir nuestro impacto humano, la Asociación Nereide y la Asociación Octopus luchan a díario desde el municipio de Tarifa. Estas dos asociaciones están diseñadas para el desarrollo de proyectos de conservación del medio ambiente, específicamente el marino y los ambientes subacuáticos. Gracias a su experiencia y trabajo podemos apoyarnos en su sentir y sus recomendaciones para ser parte activa del cambio. “No tienes que ser buceador, con-

We live in a paradise, the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. We have several natural parks and protected areas, as well as being a key location for bird migration. We also have a large number of species of whales and dolphins, some of which are included on the IUCN red list of endangered species. We are talking about an area with an incredible degree of biodiversity and yet we do not understand how to protect it properly, perhaps because we do not yet have sufficient awareness of or responsibility for the environment. Our oceans are certainly facing some very daunting problems; from overfishing, to climate change, to plastic pollution. Pollution is of course a key issue on the agenda, but the issue of waste is perhaps even more alarming. We are consuming without any awareness or thought, meaning the majority of our consumption ends up as waste, such as disposable packaging for example. And what is happening in our own paradise? Our climate, including the wind, exacerbates these effects. Much of our waste, for example, gets blown through the streets and ends up in the sea, becoming debris, killing living organisms and contaminating the environment with chemicals. Today, most marine animals have been left stranded or sick from ingesting or being trapped in our garbage. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. We must act now. The Nereide Association and the Octopus Association work together every day from Tarifa, to raise awareness and reduce our human impact on the environment. These two associations are dedicated to the development of environmental conservation projects, specifically the marine and underwater environments. Thanks to their experience and hard work, we can use their insights and recommendations to take an active part in the change. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be a diver, conservationist, or training centre to make your own contributionâ&#x20AC;?, Octopus tells us, â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many ways to encourage practices and behaviours that treat the environment and the underwater world with respect.â&#x20AC;? We are invited to think constructively: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The world is full of incredible individuals, communities and organizations that are doing a wonderful job of trying to curb the damage climate change is causing the planet. We know that in order to protect the underwater environment, we have to engage our friends and our communities, engage in responsible water usage, and encourage others to learn more about the challenges the modern world is facing.â&#x20AC;? This level of change requires us to make changes to our everyday actions, in order to bring about positive change, avoiding for example the use of single-use items. In the same vein, Nereide Association, urges us to remember the â&#x20AC;&#x153;5 RÂ´sâ&#x20AC;?. Both associations remind us that: Reject, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Repair, are small habits that can create great changes in our environment, and impact the welfare of our planet. Furthermore, leading by example provokes a far wider domino effect, particularly if you take a little time to explain the reasons behind your actions. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seen picking up litter from a reef, using a metal bottle instead of a plastic bottle, or shopping with a reusable cloth bag, the people around you may begin to realize the impact of our everyday actions on the world around us. En invierno con Levante es perfecta para hacer Windsurf. De fácil acceso, provista de duchas y servicios. A pocos pasos de varios buenos restaurantes. 400m of fine, gold sand. Locatzed between the town and the “Isla de las Palomas”, which separates the two seas. In Winter, the east wind, levante, is perfect for windsurfing. Los Lances y Rio Jara 800m de arena fina y dorada. Perfecta para el baño los días de calma o brisa moderada. Idónea para el Kitesurf entre septiembre y junio. En los meses de verano sólo se puede navegar en el area habilitada. La zona de Dos Mares es genial para aprendices y la más utilizada por las escuelas. El viento de Levante en esta playa es un viento de tierra por lo que no se aconseja a inexpertos. Con los cambios de mareas se forma una charca que puede

In summer months sailing is only permitted in the designated area. The area of Dos Mares (Two Seas) is perfect for beginner kite and windsurfers and is the most visited by the kiteschools. Here the east wind (levante) comes off the land, therefore it is not a recommended condition for inexperienced riders. Tide changes sometimes cause a large lagoon of up to 4 km to form. Detrás de la urbanización de Atlanterra encontramos una joya de la Costa de la Luz: la Playa de los Alemanes. Desde Tarifa accedemos a esta playa por la N-340 hasta Zahara de los Atunes, seguimos hasta llegar a una cala romántica localizada frente a una zona residencial de lujo pegada a la montaña. Debemos bajar por una escalera precaria. Es perfecta para el bañista con vientos de levante o de poniente moderados. No dispone de restaurantes ni lugares de ocio a pie de playa. La ciudad de Baelo Claudia nace en el siglo II a.C. en una zona altamente estratégica como lo es el Estrecho de Gibraltar. Fue ante todo un puerto comercial y pesquero gracias a la salida natural hacia África, especialmente con Tingis (Tanger). Su origen y posterior evolución están muy ligados al desarrollo de las industrias salazoneras (origen de la salsa denominada garum). Baelo Claudia es un pequeño recinto urbano de época altoimperial que nos permite acercarnos al mundo romano y contemplar con claridad la estructura de una ciudad de la época ya que aquí se localizan todos los elementos representativos que constituyen. La plaza del foro presidida por el Capitolio y rodeada de otros edificios significativos como el templo de Isis o la basílica, junto al teatro, las termas y el barrio industrial con algunas viviendas y restos de construcciones dedicadas a la preparación de salazones, constituyen las zonas más destacadas de Baelo. La mayor parte de la ciudad estuvo protegida por una muralla cuyo trazado sigue siendo perceptible veinte siglos después. En el siglo III d.C. le afectó trágicamente un terremoto, aunque pervivió un pequeño núcleo de población hasta los inicios del siglo VII d.C., cuando se abandona definitivamente. Cuando, en 1917, comenzaron a realizarse las primeras excavaciones, los investigadores encontraron los restos de una ciudad próspera, construida según los cánones clásicos de Roma. Algunos edificios son de la época de Augusto, si bien la mayor parte fue construida bajo el mandato de Claudio. Bien de Interés Cultural, el conjunto arqueológico está acompañado desde 2007 de un museo.

The city of Baelo Claudia was founded in the 2nd Century B.C. in the highly strategic location on the Strait of Gibraltar. It was first and foremost a commercial and fishing port given its natural exit towards Africa, particularly with Tangier. Its origin and subsequent evolution are closely linked to the development of the salting industries. This is the origin of the sauce known as ´garum´. Baelo Claudia is a small urban precinct from the high-imperial period, bringing us closer to the world of the Romans. Here you can clearly see the structure of a Roman city with all the elements characteristic of a city from this era. Several features stand out in Baelo and are particularly outstanding. The forum square, for example, which was presided over by the Capitol and was surrounded by other significant buildings such as the Temple of Isis and the Basilica. You can also find the theatre, the thermal baths, as well as the industrial district where there are dwellings and remains of constructions dedicated to the preparation of salted fish. The majority of the city was protected by a wall, the layout of which is still visible twenty centuries later. In the 3rd Century A.D., the city was affected tragically by an earthquake. A small population in the centre survived, however, up until the beginning of the 7th Century A.D., when it was abandoned for good. When the initial excavations begain in 1917, researchers discovered the remains of a prosperous city, built according to the classical norms of Rome. Some buildings date back to the time of Augustus, although most were built under the rule of Claudius. As an Asset of Cultural Interest, since 2007, the archaeological complex has been accompanied by a museum.
