A

s in years past, we welcome the return of Vallarta-Nayarit’s fall/ winter season and its visitors with a sense of renewed anticipation.

While many folks tend to shy away from the summer months here, those of us who remain continue with business, making the best of the challenging heat and humidity that prevail. That said, it is hardly business as usual in a tourism destination constantly striving to improve itself and remain competitive in the eye of national and international visitors.

You will find new infrastructure projects taking place all around, such as new pavement and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks for several important thruways, the reinforcement of accesses to Isla Rio Cuale and the improvement of Marina Vallarta slip accesses. Several restaurants in town, eager to remain on the “mustvisit” lists of visitors and locals, are expanding their menus or even working together to offer progressive-dinner experiences, such as the one described on page 32. Also, an important fundraising goal was reached by the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, allowing the construction of their brand-new Conservatory of Mexican Orchids, with a highly anticipated opening celebration in December. And important festivals, such as the Festival Gourmet International, now in its 20th anniversary edition, continue attracting annual visitors and keeping Vallarta in the limelight.

omo en años anteriores, damos la bienvenida a la temporada otoño invierno en Vallarta-Nayarit y a sus visitantes con mucha anticipación. Mientras que hay personas que tienden a alejarse durante los meses de verano, los que permanecemos aquí seguimos adelante con nuestros proyectos usuales, acostumbrados al calor y humedad que prevalecen. Dicho eso, no hay nada ordinario en un destino turístico tratando de evolucionar constantemente y mantenerse competitivo en las opciones del turista nacional e internacional.

Por ejemplo, notarás proyectos de infraestructura en diversos lugares, como nuevo pavimento y banquetas en algunas calles importantes, la reconstrucción de accesos a la Isla Río Cuale, y también a los muelles en Marina Vallarta. Algunos restaurantes de la ciudad, determinados a permanecer en la lista de favoritos de sus comensales, han expandido sus menús mientras que otros están colaborando juntos en experiencias de degustación progresiva, como la que compartimos contigo en la página 32. También, el Jardín Botánico de Vallarta alcanzó una importante meta de recaudación que le permitió la construcción del nuevo Conservatorio de Orquídeas Mexicanas, para el cual ofrecerán una gran fiesta de inauguración en diciembre.

Mientras tanto, importantes festivales, como el Festival Gourmet International, ahora celebrando su vigésimo aniversario, continúan atrayendo visitantes y manteniendo a Vallarta en la mira.

Local photographer, zoologist and conservationist Petr Myska has just self-published Facing West— Homes of the Mexican Pacific, a 105-page tome in which he shares spectacular photographs of one-of-a-kind villas throughout Mexico’s Pacific Riviera. “The natural beauty of the Mexican Pacific has kept me busy and happy here for over a decade,” he prefaces.

Originally from the Czech Republic, Myska arrived in Vallarta in 2000 and has developed a variety of projects locally, including Viva Natura, his pocket-sized field guide to the most common amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals of Western Mexico.

During the book’s formal presentation event, the author revealed that over two decades ago she found herself visiting Mexico City and purchasing Oaxacan food from a take-out vendor. She immediately wondered why there wasn’t a similar vendor offering sweets or panela cheese from Nayarit.

Time passed, and in 2010, after several trips abroad, she realized that there was no formal research on Nayarit’s culinary offerings, so she took it upon herself to research and document the state’s traditional recipes.

he 10th-anniversary edition of Vallarta Lifestyles’ Restaurant Week, held in May 2014, was a great accomplishment for the team that puts it together year after year. Since its inception, Restaurant Week has collaborated with some of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit’s most coveted restaurants, organizing a two-week festival that takes place every year, May 15 - 31. During Restaurant Week, participating restaurants offer innovative three-course menus, with three options available for each course, at fixed prices discounted by up to 50 percent.

Desde su inicio, Restaurant Week ha contado con la colaboración de algunos de los mejores restaurantes de Puerto Vallarta y Riviera Nayarit para ofrecer un festival de dos semanas que se lleva a cabo cada año del 15 al 31 de mayo. XIUTLA FOLKLORIC DANCE TROUPE CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY GRUPO FOLCLÓRICO MUNICIPAL, XIUTLA, FESTEJA 20 AÑOS DE FUNDACIÓN Puerto Vallarta’s municipal folkloric dance troupe, Xiutla, led by Professor Enrique Barrios Limon, celebrated its 20th anniversary in July with a variety of activities. Founded July 27, 1994, with 30 children enrolled, the current group includes around 150. In the group, children and youth learn and exhibit traditional Mexican dances for locals and tourists in their numerous presentations. Anniversary celebrations included a mass, photo exhibition, cake and a gala performance for a full house at Teatro Vallarta. This event was the perfect showcase for the members’ anniversary waltz, as well as their new show, called “Show.” As part of the celebrations, Xiutla also toured eight cities in Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz and the Federal District.

he Festival Gourmet International was founded in Puerto Vallarta by renowned chefs Thierry Blouet and Heinz Reize two decades ago. It now includes restaurants from Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit all the way up to Tepic. Through the years, the organizers have introduced a series of innovative events to the festival—from cheese sampling events and cooking classes open to the public to wine and chocolate pairings—but its basic format has remained unchanged, bringing together some of the world’s most renowned chefs with our destination’s finest, benefiting a large number of visitors and locals, who get to savor their creations during 10 consecutive days at participating restaurants.

Festival Gourmet International has positioned itself as Mexico’s most important and sophisticated culinary event. In the past two decades, it has attracted approximately 360,000 food enthusiasts and connoisseurs, who have enjoyed the culinary creations of 455 prestigious chefs from all over the world. The passage of time takes its toll. Sizable cracks appeared on one of the two accesses to Isla Río Cuale along I. Vallarta (next to River Café), making it unsafe for use, so it was demolished. Folks hoping to reach this legendary restaurant or shop along the island can use the other access stairway, across the street. Reconstruction is presently underway.

No one could have imagined that a race in drag and high heels from one Púlpito St. business to another would have been so successful. This brainchild of the Amapas Neighborhood Association not only managed to raise a sizable amount of funds to improve the colonia’s infrastructure, the Drag Derby was a riot to watch and is sure to become even livelier next year.

Our very own Los Muertos Pier was named among the top 10 world’s most beautiful piers by CNN online (8 edition.cnn.com/2014/07/28/ travel/most-beautiful-piers/), placing Puerto Vallarta all over the map (and making us proud, of course!).

any folks visiting Mexico, perhaps for the first time, may be surprised at the many accomplishments by its people in recent years. In fact, it wasn’t very long ago that we were enthralled by Salma Hayek’s amazing portrayal of Frida Kahlo in Julie Taymor’s 2002 film Frida or by Alejandro Fernandez singing mariachi music live or on any of his 30 million albums sold worldwide. We’re still quite taken by them, but others have joined their ranks.

Here are a few outstanding mexicanos to consider: Earlier this year, tenor Javier Camarena so captivated the audience as Ramiro in a performance of Rossini’s La Cenerentola at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, he became the third singer in 70 years to stop the show altogether and reprise an aria at the request of the public and conductor, Flavio Luisi. Only Luciano Pavarotti and Juan Diego Florez had been able to accomplish this previously.

A Guadalajara native, ballet dancer Isaac Hernández became the first Mexican to win—at age 16—the prestigious USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, MS. He made his debut with the San Francisco Ballet at age 19 and remained with the company until January 2014, when he became principal soloist for the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, one of the world’s top five ballet companies, according to The New York Times. At age 24, he is the only Mexican dancer to join the company.

The enterprise struck a chord, and only three years later over 5,700 tourists (or roughly 160 per month) have explored the streets of Emiliano Zapata, one of Puerto Vallarta’s most cosmopolitan neighborhoods, along with a handful of carefully chosen eateries.

“We like to think of it (the tours) as a little cultural immersion, in which participants are encouraged to ask any question they may have about whatever may be on their mind, from healthcare to lifestyle, salaries and local culture,” comments Wichner, a Philadelphia native who, prior to relocating to Puerto Vallarta, served as executive director of an important nonprofit agency in the Northeast.

Launching in November 2014, the Tasting Vallarta Tour is a progressive dinner experience, in which participants are guided through four award-winning El Centro restaurants, where they can sample some of our destination’s finest examples of Mexican cuisine. “There are many foreigners who choose to enjoy Vallarta for weeks or months at a time;” explains Wichner, “however, there are others who may not have as much time but still wish to experience Puerto Vallarta’s Mexican specialty restaurants while they are here. We designed the Tasting Vallarta Tour with them in mind.”

Vallarta Lifestyles was invited to sample the Tasting Vallarta Tour as its final logistics were being ironed out, and the tour promises to provide participants with not only great dining experiences but also the opportunity to experience Puerto Vallarta’s El Centro and Emiliano Zapata neighborhoods on foot. Over the course of three to four hours, participants will have walked approximately a mile, enjoying the equivalent of a full-size meal along the way, an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage included at each stop. And if walking from one place to another sounds daunting, rest assured. CUISINE SPOTLIGHT This delicious fish fillet is spiced with achiote (annatto), garlic oil, pepper and guajillo pepper ashes, then wrapped in fragrant hoja santa leaves and steamed to ensure a soft texture and preserve its flavor. It is served with an orange-based annatto sauce and onions spiced with xni-pec, a type of habanero-based sauce typical of Yucatán. Pairing it with a fruity Chardonnay guarantees the perfect contrast with the strong flavors of the dish.

CHEF CESAR BARAJAS Originally from Guadalajara, chef Cesar Barajas was born to a family of restaurateurs, so it’s only natural that he grew up in the kitchen, learning how to cook under his mother’s guidance. CANIRAC Vallarta, the local chapter of Mexico’s national restaurant chamber of commerce, has announced a new application, “Restaurantes Vallarta | Nayarit,” a convenient guide to many of the region’s eateries. Available as a free download in iOS and Android versions, the app features restaurants in three different categories (gourmet, standard and traditional Mexican) along with others, such as bars, cafés, shopping and so forth.

A map allows users to pinpoint the location of the businesses featured in the guide, along with useful emergency telephone numbers. Finally, the app features a special promotions area in which participating restaurants can promote unique specials. The app “Restaurantes Vallarta | Nayarit” is available in the iTunes Store and in the Google Play Store.

n 1993, a group of visitors and locals concerned with the betterment of Puerto Vallarta’s cultural offerings decided to launch Pro Biblioteca de Vallarta, A.C., a nonprofit designed to gather all the necessary resources to bring to fruition the creation and construction of a public library for the city. Three years later, on November 30, Los Mangos Public Library opened its doors to the public, with a collection of 15,000 books, becoming the only institution of its kind in all of Banderas Bay. Today, Los Mangos Public Library has become an indispensable landmark for the city, offering spaces in which visitors—children and adults—can read, borrow books, movies and films, study, access the Internet, attend music, dance and other art-related classes and participate in a variety of ongoing workshops continuously advertised on their website (8 www.bibliotecalosmangos.com) and Facebook page (8 facebook.com/biblioteca.losmangos).

In 2004 Robert Price (or Bob, as he is known by most) moved to Puerto Vallarta eager to return to and explore the unique terrain and biodiversity of the mountainous area near El Tuito. The magnificent landscape there had been imprinted in his memory from his first exposure to the area some 20 years prior. Surprised that Puerto Vallarta did not have an established botanical gardens, he took it upon himself to create one from scratch. The following year, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens was born, with the mission to “create Mexico’s foremost botanical garden for the propagation, study, discovery, conservation and display of Mexican native plants for the enjoyment of Puerto Vallarta’s residents and our visitors.”

En 2004, Robert Price (o Bob, como mucha gente le conoce) se mudó a Puerto Vallarta ansioso por regresar a explorar la biodiversidad y orografía montañosa de El Tuito y áreas circundantes, la cual había conocido por primera vez dos décadas antes. Una vez aquí, se sorprendió al descubrir que Puerto Vallarta no contaba con su propio jardín botánico, por lo que se dio a la tarea de crear uno para el destino. While the Vallarta Botanical Gardens was very well received by the foreign community early on, it took a while longer for the concept to take root in the minds and hearts of some vallartenses. Despite the fact that Mexico has some spectacular botanical gardens in cities such as San Miguel de Allende and Toluca, more than a few locals couldn’t understand why they were expected to pay a small admission fee to simply look at a garden!

Mientras que la comunidad extranjera recibió al Jardín Botánico con los brazos abiertos desde un principio, tomó algo más de tiempo para que algunos vallartenses se interesaran en el proyecto. A pesar de que México cuenta con jardines botánicos espectaculares en ciudades como San Miguel de Allende y Toluca, ¡algunos locales no podían entender la idea de pagar una cuota de acceso para explorar un jardín!

But from the get-go, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens was designed to be much more than just a garden. And little by little, the project has gained well-deserved recognition locally and abroad, thanks to its staff’s (paid and volunteer) dedication and commitment to providing an experience that is both educational and recreational. Their creative vision has conceived of just about every type of event to attract an audience: pig roasts, psychic fairs, diversity days, photo contests, flower shows, folk dance performances, you name it. The good news is, it has paid off.

Sin embargo, desde un principio, el Jardín Botánico de Vallarta fue concebido para ser muchísimo más que sólo un jardín. Y poco a poco, el proyecto ha recibido la aceptación que merece, tanto a nivel local como internacional, gracias a la dedicación y compromiso constante de su personal (asalariado y voluntario) de ofrecer la mejor experiencia educativa y recreativa. Su ingenio creativo ha concebido y ejecutado toda clase de eventos para atraer nuevos públicos: barbacoas de cerdo al aire libre, ferias psíquicas, días de diversidad, competencias fotográficas, exhibiciones florales, presentaciones de baile folclórico, y mucho más. Lo bueno es que dichas iniciativas han tenido excelentes resultados.

A NEW CONSERVATORY IS BORN NACE UN NUEVO CONSERVATORIO Just a couple months ago, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens completed construction of its brand-new Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids, an ambitious project that was several years in the making and has been very dear to founder Robert Price for an even longer period.

The original idea of building the Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids sprang from the fact that many parts of Mexico have a climate that is ideal for orchid species to live and propagate naturally, Puerto Vallarta’s Sierra Madre surroundings included. The country is home to more than 1,200 species, of which approximately 300 are found nowhere else on earth.

Tan solo hace un par de meses, el Jardín Botánico de Puerto Vallarta concluyó la construcción de su nuevo Conservatorio Vallartense de Orquídeas Mexicanas, un ambicioso proyecto que tomo varios años de planeación y ejecución, y algo muy personal e importante para el fundador Robert Price.

La idea original de crear un Conservatorio Vallartense de Orquídeas Mexicanas surgió del hecho que muchas partes de México—incluyendo la Sierra Madre cercana a Puerto Vallarta— cuentan con el clima ideal para que las diferentes especies de orquídeas puedan vivir y propagarse a la intemperie. México cuenta con más de 1,200 especies diferentes de orquídeas, de las cuales aproximadamente 300 son endémicas del país.

Back in 2007, a substantial grant from the American Orchid Society had allowed the Vallarta Botanical Gardens to conduct a first-ever census of native orchid species in the area. Fifty-six unique species were identified within a five-mile radius of the gardens, confirming that its location was ideal to build such a project and house the new orchid collection. The seed for a new conservatory was planted!

Things happen—or not—for a reason, however, and it wasn’t until June 6, 2010, that construction of the new orchid conservatory broke ground (right). At the same time, however, other areas of the gardens needed to be developed or improved to better serve the increasing number of visitors. A little over a year later, the gardens held the grand opening of their new Orchid Bar on the upper level of Hacienda de Oro, their main structure.

The rustic bar was designed and constructed by local artist Leno Morfín, who salvaged wood to build it from a nearby corral that was being torn down.

The conservatory project went into overdrive in October 2013, when the fundraising campaign for its construction was formally announced to the public. At the time, a longtime anonymous donor to the gardens had pledged to match contributions to this campaign dollar for dollar up to $100K USD until December 31 of that year, toward an overall project goal of $350K USD. The initial goal was met.

En 2007, una subvención considerable de la American Orchid Society (sociedad americana de orquídeas) había permitido al Jardín Botánico de Vallarta realizar el primer censo de orquídeas endémicas en el área. Se identificaron 56 especies en una circunferencia de 8 kilómetros alrededor del jardín, lo que confirmó que éste contaba con una ubicación ideal para construir un orquidario. ¡La semilla del nuevo conservatorio fue plantada!

Las cosas suceden—o no suceden—por algo, y no fue sino hasta el 6 de junio de 2010 que se colocó la primera piedra para la construcción del nuevo conservatorio de orquídeas (arriba). En ese entonces, había otras áreas del jardín que debían ser desarrolladas o mejoradas para poder proporcionar un buen servicio al creciente número de visitantes. Poco más de un año después, el jardín celebró la inauguración de su nuevo Orchid Bar (bar de orquídeas) en el segundo piso de la Hacienda de Oro, su edificio principal. El rústico bar fue diseñado y construido por Leno Morfín, un artista local quien logró rescatar madera de un corral cercano programado para ser derrumbado.

El proyecto del conservatorio tomó ímpetu en octubre de 2013, cuando se anunció al público la campaña de recaudación de fondos para su construcción. Un benefactor anónimo se había comprometido a igualar la cantidad recaudada hasta un máximo de $100 mil USD hasta el 31 de diciembre de ese año, para alcanzar la cifra necesaria total de $350 mil USD. La meta inicial fue alcanzada sin problema.

On July 26, the stairway to the Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids was dedicated in the memory of Mexican orchid researcher Roberto González Tamayo (1940-2014), who spent much of his life as a professor with the Guadalajara University Institute of Botany. Shortly thereafter, construction of the Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids was successfully concluded.

Much work remains to be done, however, including meeting fundraising goals for plants and educational displays, the first year’s operational budget and completion of a state-of-the-art orchid laboratory ($60K USD by November 2014, $30K USD by December 2014 and $60K USD by April 2015, respectively). Expect a series of celebrations surrounding the grand opening of the Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids to take place December 6 to 13. For more information, 8 visit www.vbgardens.org.

On the way to the gardens, there are stops to be considered at Mismaloya, for the beach or the Puerto Vallarta Zoo, and shortly thereafter, the town of Boca de Tomatlán, the departure point for the many water taxis that can take you to a handful of secluded destinations accessible only by boat, such as Las Animas, Quimixto and Yelapa.

The highway ride to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is scenic both along the stretch that follows the coastline and once it veers inland at Boca de Tomatlán, gaining altitude rather quickly (the fresh, pine-scented air may take you by surprise!). A few minutes past the gardens, Villa Azálea, an organic farm and hotel, offers day passes, cooking classes and gorgeous accommodations for an overnight stay. And shortly thereafter (or approximately an hour from Puerto Vallarta), the town of El Tuito is both a perfect town to spend a day in for an authentic Mexico feel and the access point to a number of beaches located in Cabo Corrientes, the municipality just south of Puerto Vallarta.

La carretera al Jardín Botánico de Vallarta es escénica y pintoresca, tanto en el tramo que va junto al mar, como después de Boca de Tomatlán, donde el camino se desvía y asciende hacia las montañas rápidamente (¡el inesperado olor a pino te puede tomar por sorpresa!). When it comes to transportation, there are inexpensive city bus lines that depart regularly from Colonia Emiliano Zapata and travel as far as Boca de Tomatlán, while others continue on to El Tuito. Even just taking the bus to Boca and spending some time there prior to returning will give you a sense of Puerto Vallarta’s beautiful surroundings.

El Tigre was designed on a flat surface. To make the course more interesting, sand and water define the golf holes: 12 holes feature water with three “beach” bunkers. In addition, Hole 1 starts on a shallow green alongside a street, and Hole 18 certainly offers the toughest finish. This course hosts a number of national and international tournaments. Paradise Village created the additional draw of a full-service spa in the clubhouse and a complete sports club nearby.

The Marina Vallarta Golf Course was one of the early ones and continues to be one of the most popular because of its proximity to town, the Maritime Terminal and airport.

Its unique feature is that your game includes the added dimension of crocodiles, iguanas, turtles and a wide variety of native birds. Located in what was originally a swamp, water is a characteristic of most of the holes. It’s a challenging course and fun to play.

In fact, his stadium effect is what made this course function so well for the World Cup and other competitions. It’s a great course to see golf as a spectator. And the spectacular views include the sea on one side and the mountains on the other, a unique feature. Access from the airport or Maritime Terminal is an easy five-minute drive.

ou’ve made the decision that you’d like to own a second home or perhaps retire full-time in Puerto Vallarta. Now, the question is “what part” of Vallarta. Over the past 20 to 30 years, Vallarta has evolved from a single destination to one that offers a multitude of regional options, each unique unto itself. Before beginning to look for a new home, you really should identify your needs to narrow down the search criteria, making the buying process much easier in the end.

If all you know is that you want a two-bedroom near or in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll discover there are literally hundreds to choose from.

Most people know the type of property they’re interested in—be it a condo, home, townhouse or residential lot—and how many bedrooms it should have, along with desired amenities. But what they may not realize are the advantages and/or disadvantages each neighborhood—colonia in Mexico—provides.

To better understand where each of these neighborhood areas is situated, please consult the map on page 83. If you want to be where the action is, downtown Vallarta is the place for you. The two most popular areas are Gringo Gulch, which is on the hillside above town and overlooking the Cuale River, or on the south side of, from the Cuale River and along Los Muertos Beach. In these areas, you can get around quite easily without owning a car, with markets, restaurants and shopping close by. Gringo Gulch is mostly made up of single-family homes and small condominium projects, nearly all offering views overlooking the city and bay. Across the river, however, real estate inventory is mostly made up of condominium projects of all sizes, the most popular situated along the shore, providing unobstructed views and easy access to the beach. In both areas, the disadvantage can be noise from city living, something you may have to put up with in order to have easy access and close proximity to most of downtown Vallarta. continued on pg. 82

The Hotel Zone, which extends from the marina to the northern edge of downtown Vallarta, has seen a considerable amount of development over the past 10 years, with the building of high-rise condominium projects that provide spectacular panoramic views of Vallarta and Banderas Bay. If high-rise living is your style, this area provides easy access to town and the airport, as well. Many shopping centers are situated nearby, just across the main road that leads into Vallarta. Or if it’s a home you’re looking for and you don’t mind giving up having a view, there’s the relatively new development of Fluvial or the older, traditional neighborhood of Versalles.

Having a home here is like living on the outskirts of the main downtown area.

Just south of Vallarta, the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains hug the coastline, creating a steep vertical backdrop that has become popular for condominium developments, offering even more spectacular views than the developments along the shoreline below. Leaving Vallarta, Amapas is first, catering mostly to small and medium-size condo projects. Conchas Chinas is a little farther south and offers older luxury homes on either side of the highway, along with some newer condominium projects. Living continued on pg. 84

here, however, one does need a vehicle, as the hills are steep and there is little in the way of shopping or restaurant options. If you’re a golfer, be ready for a drive to get to the courses, as most are located either east of Vallarta or along the northern shoreline.

On both sides of the international airport are two mega developments that were designed to provide a little something for everyone.

They are large enough that you’d still want to own a vehicle, but for some, a golf cart may be enough. Marina Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta/Flamingos are large residential areas built around marinas and golf courses, offering a variety of single-family homes and condominium options. Each has shopping centers and a good selection of restaurants, and both are situated along the shores of the bay, providing access to the beach, as well.

Large condominium projects stand along the beach, while mostly smaller condo projects and single-family homes line the fairways of the golf courses. They tend to resemble residential areas you may be familiar with back in the USA or Canada, rather than traditional Mexico, but those who live there will find most everything they need available close by.

If you’re looking to get away from it all, to have a place to escape the hustle and bustle of city living, then you may want to look to the north, in the state of Nayarit, in small towns such as Sayulita and San Francisco (most commonly known as San Pancho), or along the southern shore of the bay, toward Boca de Tomatlan. To the north, there are also options in La Cruz and at the point of Punta de Mita, as well as residential developments situated between these two popular villages. These towns offer some smaller condominium projects, mostly along the shoreline, with single-family residences located behind, in the streets of these small towns. Sayulita and San Pancho have more hillside behind them, so most homes have ocean views. Heading south from Conchas Chinas, one can find beachfront homes and condos, as well as exclusive developments built into the lush tropical hillside that offer luxury single-family living or, most recently, new condominium developments.

The highway cuts inland at Boca de Tomatlan, and for the most part, land farther south along the coast is not deeded and does not have road access. However, if you are really looking to get away from it all and experience Mexico, you may want to visit El Tuito.

There are no condominium projects there, but there are single-family homes and residential lots at reasonable prices, a brand-new ecologically sound development and nearby access to some exceptional beaches. continued on pg. 62

Back inside the bay again, Bucerias was once the place to escape to as Vallarta transitioned into a large city and service center for Banderas Bay, but it, too, has seen quite a bit of growth and is now the second largest town around Banderas Bay. Real estate options are mostly single-family homes or small condominium developments. Bucerias offers easy access to the bay’s longest beach, and the golf courses of Flamingos and Nuevo Vallarta are just minutes away. And if you enjoy boating, there is the relatively new marina in La Cruz to moor your boat, also just minutes away.

The most upscale development is located on the northern point of the bay, called Punta Mita. It is built around two Jack Nicklaus golf courses and hosts a St. Regis and Four Seasons hotel. There are numerous surf breaks around the point, lovely beaches with beach clubs and a very large and well outfitted tennis club, as well. Living there is seriously out of Vallarta, and many homeowners rarely visit Vallarta, making it only as far as the airport when heading south. Both luxury homes and condominiums are available along the shoreline or golf course fairways.

The variety of real estate options is wonderful, in that there really is something for everyone; however, it can be a little overwhelming if you aren’t sure exactly what it is you’re looking for. Take a good look at the lifestyle you desire, and be sure to take into consideration what may be most desirable not just now, but perhaps in five to ten years.

You may even decide to rent for a while in different locations, to really get a feel for what each neighborhood has to offer.

La carretera se despega de la costa en Boca de Tomatlán y a partir de ese punto, la mayoría de los terrenos son ejidales o no cuentan con caminos de acceso. Sin embargo, si realmente deseas tener un estilo de vida auténticamente mexicano, tal vez te gustaría visitar El Tuito, donde no encontrarás proyectos de condominios, pero existen casas y lotes residenciales a buen precio, un nuevo proyecto ecológico, y acceso a playas incomparables.

De regreso en la bahía, Bucerías solía ser el lugar al que uno escapaba de Vallarta, pero como destino, también ha evolucionado, convirtiéndose en el segundo poblado más grande de Bahía de Banderas. Las opciones inmobiliarias consisten en residencias individuales y pequeños edificios de condominios. Bucerías ofrece acceso a la playa más larga de la bahía, así como a los campos de golf en Flamingos y Nuevo Vallarta, que están a tan sólo unos minutos. Si cuentas con tu propia embarcación, la moderna marina en La Cruz también se encuentra cerca.

El desarrollo más lujoso es Punta Mita, situado en el extremo norte de la bahía. Cuenta con dos campos de golf diseñados por Jack Nicklaus, así como hoteles de St. Regis y Four Seasons. Existen varios puntos para surfear alrededor de la punta, hermosas playas con clubes, y un club de tenis muy bien equipado. Vivir ahí es estar completamente afuera de Vallarta, y muchos de los propietarios raramente visitan la ciudad, desplazándose hacia el sur únicamente hasta el aeropuerto cuando llegan o se van. Tal vez decidas rentar en varias áreas por un tiempo para tener una idea más clara de lo que ofrece cada comunidad.
