Youden If we compare our world (or the rest of the world, for that matter) 12 months ago with the present, it’s plain to see that things are pretty different today. But while changes in the world’s economy, along with an unexpected flu scare, dramatically affected our destination in the recent months, we are pleased to see that Puerto Vallarta continues to be a favored vacation and investment destination for many. Even more importantly, it’s humbling to see how these changes have somehow renewed our own vows toward our city, with countless individuals blogging and producing videos about the many attractions Puerto Vallarta has to offer and others organizing charitable food drives to help the unemployed, while international superstar Alejandro Fernandez recently hosted a spectacular free concert on our Malecón to promote our destination. One of the many wonders of Puerto Vallarta is the great variety of ways in which you can become familiar with our destination. We describe these for you in “Experiencing Vallarta,” the first article of a two-part series. We also feature short descriptions of some of Puerto Vallarta’s most popular neighborhoods to help you get a feel for their own uniqueness, along with choice images of some of Puerto Vallarta’s most beautiful spots. “Vallarta en Vivo” Concert a Success About 40,000 tourists and Puerto Vallarta locals enjoyed the concert “Vallarta Live” on June 20. Led by Mexican singer Alejandro Fernandez and several of his famous singer friends, this concert was part of the “Experience Jalisco 2009” campaign run by the state government to revive tourism in the state of Jalisco, and more specifically in Puerto Vallarta, one of the greatest sources of income generated by visitors. International artists such as Puerto Rican Luis Fonsi, Spanish Enrique Iglesias and David Bisbal, Peruvian Gianmarco and Mexican Joan Sebastian and Belanova joined the cause, thanks to Alejandro Fernandez’ call to promote his home state. In addition, a second concert was scheduled for June 27 in Guadalajara, also to include international stars, such as Gloria Estefan and Paulina Rubio. JP Alrededor de 40 mil personas, entre turistas y gente de Puerto Vallarta, disfrutaron del concierto “Vallarta en Vivo” el pasado 20 de junio, el cual estuvo encabezado por el cantante mexicano Alejandro Fernández y varios de sus famosos amigos cantantes. Este concierto formó parte de la campaña “Jalisco Vive 2009” que ejecutó el gobierno estatal para reavivar el turismo en el estado de Jalisco, y específicamente en Puerto Vallarta, uno de los destinos que mayor derrama económica genera gracias a sus visitantes. Committed to the Future of Vallarta’s Youth Comprometido con la Juventud de Vallarta
Art Fumerton Originally from Canada, Art Fumerton was enchanted with our city during his first visit in 1970, and when Vallarta called him again in 1994, he said goodbye to a 15-year career in “corporate America,” loaded up the Bronco and headed south with his wife, Mayra. The Fumertons quickly got involved in community projects and were horrified that there were so many young children at the municipal dump not attending school. Connecting with Pastor Saul Gonzalez from Perdon y Amistad church, they helped organize a breakfast program to get the local kids fed and into school. In 1999 only 30 percent of these children made it to sixth grade, whereas today 90 percent go on to seventh grade. And the vision has blossomed into Children of the Dump Vallarta (COD), with Fumerton serving as a co-director. Fumerton believes that “There’s only one way out, and that’s education!” Today, due in large part to his initiative and fundraising efforts in cooperation with Perdon y Amistad, COD offers after-school programs in English, math and computers at their School of Champions, as well as weekend field trips and summer camps. He is proud of their School Feeding Program, which provides meals to 1500 - 1800 children daily. Fumerton cree que “sólo hay una salida, ¡y es la educación!” Hoy, debido en gran parte a su iniciativa y a los esfuerzos de recaudación en cooperación con Perdón y Amistad, su fundación ofrece programas después de clases en inglés, matemáticas y cómputo en la Escuela de Campeones, así como paseos de campo los fines de semana y campamentos de verano. Está orgulloso de su Programa de Alimentación Escolar, el cual proporciona comida a entre 1500 y 1800 niños diariamente. Meanwhile, the federal government announced the allocation of $1.2 billion pesos to promote Mexican tourist destinations for the remainder of the year. These are just two of the efforts that have been undertaken to restore tourism following the chaos caused by the outbreak of Influenza A H1N1. Although there were no confirmed or suspected cases of this type of influenza in Puerto Vallarta, the Secretary of Health is maintaining intensive monitoring to ensure the safety of tourists. He was responsible for making changes and achieving better results, particularly in the management of human resources, by giving his staff the opportunity to continue their education. “They are the soul of this office, and there are always at least two people giving out information, sometimes four. When needed I go out to give information to tourists myself, but this usually happens when we have cruise ships in port and the city is full of visitors.” Tovar arrived in Puerto Vallarta in 1975, a boom time for the tourism sector, and participated in the opening of several hotels. Beginning as a receptionist and being promoted to hotel manager, he went on to become a tour boat operator, and finally the owner of a bar. With all this experience, Tovar remains committed to serving the tourist as he has for more than 30 years, now as Puerto Vallarta’s director of tourism. Cuando Tovar asumió la dirección, después de haberse desempeñado como subdirector más de un año, se encargó de hacer cambios para obtener mejores resultados, especialmente en el manejo de los recursos humanos para darle oportunidad a sus trabajadores de seguir con su preparación académica. “Ellos son el alma de esta oficina, siempre hay al menos dos personas dando información todo el tiempo, algunas veces cuatro. Y cuando se necesita, yo mismo salgo a dar información a los turistas, esto sucede principalmente cuando tenemos crucero y la ciudad está llena de visitantes”. Enrique Tovar llegó a Puerto Vallarta en 1975, una época de bonanza para el sector turístico por lo que le tocó trabajar para la apertura de varios hoteles. Antes de llegar a la gerencia, tuvo que comenzar como recepcionista, y una vez concluido su ciclo dentro de la hotelería abrió una operadora de turismo receptivo, compró una embarcación para hacer recorridos turísticos y hasta fue propietario de un bar. Con todas estas experiencias, sigue dedicándose a atender al turista como hace más de 30 años, ahora desde la dirección de turismo municipal.

Puerto Vallarta continues preparation to be a competition venue for the 2011 Pan American Games and also to host other significant sporting events in the future. In addition to demonstrating our capacity as host, our city has received a great deal of coverage in the international media thanks to events including World Championship Boxing, the final training round of the Mexican Davis Cup tennis team, the Aga Sidral XVI International Sports Classic and international beach volleyball and soccer tournaments.

This was the first major sporting event staged at the convention center and featured ticket sales through one of the largest event promoters in Latin America. The national television network, TV Azteca, broadcast the event, and there were also a significant number of associated activities-including a parade, public autograph signing session, official weigh-in ceremony and an impressive concert series.

Often overlooked, this tranquil neighborhood bordered by Libertad and Ignacio L. Vallarta streets, along with the Rio Cuale, is home to Vallarta’s two main markets and springs to life during daylight hours. Traditional architecture abounds, with many buildings and storefronts recently revitalized and brightly painted. Not to be confused with bananas, their sweeter and smaller counterparts, plantains are a staple food in many tropical regions of the world. Unlike bananas, they are seldom eaten raw, and it’s not uncommon to find them in savory dishes, such as Cuban-style rice, served with fried plantains on the side. “Platanos machos,” as they are often referred to locally, are equally delicious as a dessert, and in Puerto Vallarta, it’s not unusual to find one or two carts along the Malecon extension serving this delicious treat. They are often garnished with fresh strawberries, mangoes or other seasonal fruits and sweetened with jam and condensed milk, a perfect accompaniment for an afternoon stroll along Puerto Vallarta’s popular promenade! 4 tuna medallions, cut in large cubes 2 t Himilayan pink salt or other coarse salt 1.5 t crushed red pepper 2 t lemon juice 4 t balsamic vinegar 8 t extra virgin olive oil 2 oz arugula 4 t white wine vinegar 4 t orange juice 8 t pecan oil 1.5 oz pecan pieces 1.5 oz grated Parmesan In a bowl, stir together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar and lemon juice. Season with salt and crushed pepper. Add the tuna and let marinate for a few minutes. For the arugula vinaigrette, mix the white wine vinegar, orange juice and pecan oil. Season to taste and dress the salad. Serve the cubes of tuna with a little of its marinade, accompanied by the salad, and top with Parmesan and nuts. Decorate the plate with curry and paprika oils. Papier maché (chewed-up paper, in French) can be traced back to China’s Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD). Despite its French name, it actually did not reach France until the mid 17th century. Puerto Vallarta has certainly matured from the days when it offered just two golf courses. While those two clubs were very professional, Vallarta was not known as a destination for golfers. But when the EMC World Cup was held at Vista Vallarta in 2002, international attention brought additional investment to the area, and the existing seven local courses grew to nine with another on the way. Now, Vallarta has become a golf destination for professionals the world over. Puerto Vallarta ciertamente ha madurado desde los días en que ofrecía solamente dos campos de golf. El Tigre was designed on a flat surface. To make the course more interesting, sand and water define the golf holes: 12 holes feature water with three “beach” bunkers. In addition, Hole 1 starts on a shallow green alongside a street, and Hole 18 certainly offers the toughest finish. This course hosts a number of national and international tournaments. Paradise Village created the additional draw of a full-service spa in the clubhouse and a complete sports club nearby. El Tigre fue diseñado en una superficie plana.
