A Message from Your Lt. Governor Fall Rally Recap Service Spotlight: PHHS Halloween at the Hills District Advocacy Project Key Club Week Divisional Event: Movie Night Contact Information

A MESSAGE FROM

your lieutenant governor

Hello Division 20! November is here, which means it’s time for the holiday season! Get excited for our holiday themed divisional event, where we’ll be watching the movie Elf to kick off the official holiday season on December 1st, as well as completing fun service projects as a division, and moreover, as a district: the event will be held in conjunction with Division 21. Make sure you invite not only your club officers, but also your members, to participate in this fun event. To recap our biggest event of the year, we truly appreciate all those who came out to support the Key Club mission and show their spirit of service -- especially in the midst of the torrential rain. Moreover, we hope you learned something new, whether it was about a new service project, district or international opportunity, or about what a small step in Key Club can do for your school and community. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or just want to have a colloquial conversation, I’m only a phone call, text, Facebook message, or e-mail away. And in the spirit of November and the Thanksgiving holiday, I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to serve as lieutenant governor and meet such wonderful members in our division. Yours in caring and service, Vanessa Ting DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | NOVEMBER SEPTEMBER2016 2016

New Jersey Key Club’s biggest event of the year made its mark on Sunday, October 9 -although the day started out with rain, the spirit of our 2,000 members and advisers certainly cheered the event up as the District Board discussed the District Service Project, Youth Opportunities Fund, District Advocacy Focus, as well as several other key opportunities and events this year. Attendees also had the privilege of hearing from Past-LTG Ashley Hahn and our International President Devin Sun about the journeys Key Club can take you on, as well as an international update from Shinbee Park, our International Trustee. If you missed the event this year, make sure you attend next year! DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | NOVEMBER SEPTEMBER2016 2016

Service Spotlight PARSIPPANY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL Parsippany Hills High School ran their annual Halloween at the Hills this past Friday, October 28: a school-wide tradition that has been running for over 20 years, serving both the school and community. Essentially, several clubs in the school get together and create their own themed room: this year, Key Club’s room was themed Disney. Featuring characters from Monsters, Inc., Captain America, 101 Dalmations, The Impossibles, and Winnie the Pooh, club

members dressed up as they greeted the elementary school students and ran various games. The kids also had the opportunity to win buckets of candy, known as our famous “fish-for-candy” game, where Key Clubbers hide under a table and drop candy into buckets that the kids ultimately use string to pull up. Ultimately, both the elementary school students and parents, as well as the Key Clubbers, had a fun time celebrating Halloween -- at the Hills.

Halloween at the Hills I interviewed Tara Srinivasan, the editor of Parsippany Hills, to get a better idea of what it takes to run this event: What’s your favorite part of Halloween at the Hills? I always look forward to seeing all the children who come into our room dressed up in adorable costumes! Why did you enjoy this year’s theme? I think that Disney is something everyone of all ages can relate to, whether it be kids who’ve fallen in love

with the new movies or adults who fondly remember the old ones. Can you describe the work it takes behind Halloween at the Hills? It begins in the first meeting of the year when the executive board decides on a theme, and leading up to the event, people bring in candy, decorations, and make posters. The week before the event, there are sessions everyday after school where people can work on decorations and the activities.

THE DISTRICT ADVOCACY FOCUS

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Scientific investigation has exhibited that creative expression can influence neuroendocrine pathways that control physiologic behavior in many ways such as creating a sense of well-being, reduce anxiety, depression and pain, as well as promoting a general quality of life. By allowing of life. By allowing our veterans to express their emotions and share their experiences with others through a creative outlet, they are able to become empowered and gain a sense of purpose and hope for a better future. Healing through art has been able to help veterans suffering from PTSD in a real and significant manner. Creative engagement is comparatively inexpensive to that of other treatments and is accessible through online resources and interactive solutions, as well as in-person community-based settings.

Key Club week (November 7-11) is coming soon, which means its time to show your community what Key Club is all about: service! The days are as follows: Monday, November 7: Show Your K In Every Way! Whether it be through wearing key club gear, hanging up posters around your school, or featuring fun photos on your social media pages, make sure you show the world what it means to be in Key Club. Tuesday, November 8: Kudos to the Key Players. Thank all the people who have supported you in your Key Club journey, whether it may be an adviser, parent, or teacher.
