A MESSAGE FROM

your lieutenant governor

Hello Division 20! School is almost here, so now it’s time to kick your membership recruitment and retention efforts in high gear. At the same time, having involved and motivated members is just as important, if not more important, than having many members, so make sure you have fun ways, activities, and icebreakers to engage members in meetings throughout the year. The beginning of September also brings around the Fall Regional Training Conferences, so make sure you attend at least one conference if you have not already attended the Spring RTCs. Our theme is “Under the Neon Lights of Service,” so make sure you attend for exciting workshops where you can develop your leadership skills and participate in raffles to win some cool Key Club gear. Fall Rally, our biggest event of the year, is also coming up soon. Make sure you attend to not only enjoy a day in Six Flags Great Adventure, but also to receive important information regarding the District Service Project and other important announcements. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or just want to have a colloquial conversation, I’m only a phone call, text, Facebook message, or e-mail away. Yours in caring and service, Vanessa Ting DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | SEPTEMBER 2016

REGIONAL TRAINING CONFERENCES Are you a Key Clubber who is interested in bettering your home, school and community? Make sure you attend RTCs! At these Regional Training Conferences, you will have the opportunity to learn how to improve your homes, schools, and communities, become more active in your club and have a groovy time while doing so. You will even get the chance to bond with other compassionate Key Clubbers across the state! It’s amazing how much you can learn from other Key Clubbers; you can share service project ideas, strengths, and how to make your club more active and involved. The 80’s theme, Under the Neon Lights of Service, will truly electrify you all when you step through the doorway. On May 14th at James Caldwell High School and on May 21st at Brick Memorial High School, these RTCs will be held from 9am-1pm. Breakfast and Lunch will be served! At the workshops, which are led by the New Jersey District Board, you will learn so much about how to be an efficient officer or an active general member, and also learn a lot of important skills that will benefit you in your Key Club career. You will learn how to organize fundraisers and other service projects, speak publicly, keep members active and involved, recruit and retain members, and much more. You will also learn a lot about Key Club and all the events it has to offer! When attending an RTC, be sure to bring the following: ● Notebook and pen/pencil - there will be a lot of information and taking notes is a great idea! ● Non-perishable food items! We will be holding a Food Drive at each RTC to raise food for our HUNGER IN NJ District Project! Be ready to learn lots of important information and meet Key Clubbers from across the state. Get to know other people! Attend different workshops than others from your club and branch out and meet new people! Don’t all jump at once! We know you all want to come and that is totally awesome! We can’t wait to meet you all Under the Neon Lights of Service! PAGE 6

TEN SERVICE PROJECTS TO COMBAT

Hunger in New Jersey

1.

Penny Challenge -- Drop off a bucket in each homeroom, and encourage people to donate even a penny to support the District Service Project. By the end of a set time period, reward the winning homeroom with a special prize, like a free bagel breakfast or pizza lunch. To make things even more fun, you can allow other homerooms to be able to deduct the amount donated by dropping silver coins in other classroom’s buckets: the value of the coin is the amount of money that is deducted from the existing amount.

2.

Cake Decorating Contest -- Bake cakes as an officer team, and allow people beforehand to sign up for the cake decorating contest. Supply various tools and a variety of sprinkles and frosting colors to the attendees, and reward the best decorated cake with a special prize. All other attendees can eat the cake they decorate.

3.

Stall Day -- This definitely requires a compelling pitch to the administration, but coordinate the project with all the homeroom teachers and promote that day where students bring in as much change as possible to support the District Service Project. Teachers have to count all the money before they start class; pennies could be prohibited to generate more revenue for the project, and make things more efficient for teachers.

4.

Lock In -- Coordinate a night where students are locked into the school over the night, and there are various carnival-like activities, programs, and snacks the participants can enjoy. Members can also get service hours by running specific activities during the night. Make sure you promote the activity well, and charge each attendee.

Once upon a time . . . All the lost boys left Neverland, Sleeping Beauty woke up and called a carriage, Little Red Riding Hood packed a second basket of treats, and Jack came down from the Beanstalk. But where were they all heading? Why, the NJ District of KCI’s Fall Rally, of course - the one event that can make even Grumpy smile! Fall Rally, or what you may know as the Key Club event held in Six Flags Great Adventure, is our biggest event of the year! Come and celebrate the start of the new school year of service with over 3,000 dedicated Key Clubbers across the state, while joining in on a pep rally including information regarding all of Key Club’s recent activities. This year, Fall Rally will be held on Sunday, October 9th! It is such an inspiring event - one that’s just right. From learning about service opportunities to riding roller coasters taller than Rapunzel’s tower, Fall Rally is such a magical time! Fall Rally is only $38.00 for early registration non-season pass attendees, $43.00 for regular registration non-season pass attendees, and $7 for all season-pass attendees. You can hear about the available service opportunities in your district, learn more about our District Project, meet your 2016-2017 NJ District Board, and ride roller coasters with your friends in the afternoon! Early Registration is due postmarked by Friday, September 23, 2016. Make sure you register early, especially if your club is taking a bus, as a bus pass is included in early registration. Late registration is due the day of Fall Rally at the park! Attending Fall Rally will allow you to turn ordinary service projects into golden ones! Don’t miss out on such a whimsical experience! We hope to see you all there!
